id-morning last Friday, Maguire Auto Dealerships distributed a news release announcing it had approached cit y leaders with a revised plan for the Carpenter Business Park to city officials to better address interest in walkable, mixed use-focused development.

Ac c ord i ng to t he pre s s relea se , t he new propos a l hints at “the inclusion of a new GreenStar Market location, market-rate housing units, and local craft distillery with farmto-table eatery at the multi-acre site,” and would only use 25 percent of the lot for parking spaces. From the release: “Under the new plan, auto retail would now utilize approximately 25 percent of the site, consistent with the city’s Comprehensive Plan. Further, the revision includes a commitment from Maguire to exercise a separate purchase option and immediately donate the garden parcel back to Project Growing Hope for its Community Gardens, ensuring the organization would never again have to worry about losing its lease and being displaced. The property would remain forever green.

Maguire’s new proposal will still greatly enhance the Route 13 corridor by constructing new sidewalks and landscaped pedestrian walkways around the campus, removing unsightly chain link fencing along the highway, and opening up the parcel as a gateway for the adjacent neighborhood to the nearby Cayuga Lake waterfront and Farmers Market. To help alleviate serious traffic and parking problems along Route 13, Maguire will open parking facilities at the campus to Farmers’ Market attendees on Saturdays and Sundays and allow access to solar power electric vehicle charging stations.”

New Marriott Opens Doors Eight years ago, current mayor Svante Myrick had just arrived on Ithaca’s City Council when he was faced with a controversial choice, one of the most controversial of his career. Council was voting on whether or not to grant a tax incentive to the Downtown Ithaca Marriott hotel project, and it appeared as if the newcomer Myrick was going to be the tie-breaking vote.

Deputy of Economic Development Philly DeSarno, strongly in favor of the incentive, met with Myrick prior to the vote, along with devel-

oper Jeff Rimland. After several minutes spent convincing Rimland that the 20 year-old Myrick was actually on City Council, the rest of the meeting was spent strategizing how to get the hotel built. Myrick eventually voted in favor of the incentive, leading to years of deals and cooperation between the hotel’s officials and the city of Ithaca.

Those years of work culminated today in the official ribbon-cutting ceremony held in the Downtown Ithaca Marriott lobby, a lavish setting framed by mahogany walls holding cloth-bound books and a tasteful stone palate bordering rich golden carpeting. Prosciutto and cheese lined the dining table, while the bar offered free exotic drinks.

fter more than a year’s effort, Ithaca College’s cont i ngent facu lt y seem to have finally had enough with the status of negotiations with the administration, threatening to strike next year if a deal is not made soon.

T he g roup, which vo t e d t o u n ion i z e i n 2015, had been in pursuit of a contract from the college for the past 15 months angling for, among other things, contracts with more than one year’s duration, better pay and a level of health care similar to what full time, tenured faculty receive.

Last Tuesday, the Contingent Faculty Bargaining Committee presented a white paper, “Standing Up for Equal Pay for Equal Work” to The Ithaca College Faculty Council outlining its concerns: though paid a “competitive rate” comparable to that of major colleges and universities in the area, parttime non-tenure track faculty at IC are paid a small fraction of

In the three page paper, the union outlined their grievances toward the equity of IC’s pay structure, stating parttime faculty members’ current pay rate of $1,400 per credit hour and a limit of teaching two courses per semester (what they say is a limit designed to make them ineligible for benefits) limits their income to a potential $16,800 a year.

“There are very few skilled workers or professional jobs of any kind that make as little as part-time faculty currently do, even adjusting for our parttime status,” the paper reads.

“According to wage statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor, Ithaca College part-time faculty earn less than quarry rock-splitters and garbage collectors.”

he last Common Council meeting of 2016 was highlighted by a strong move a ga i nst t he hou si ng shortage in Ithaca and Tompkins County, a problem that has gotten increasingly worse in the area recently.

The Council voted in favor of a new local law that would ta ke advantage of recent ly enacted state and county legislation that allows local governments, like the City of Ithaca, to decide their own property tax exemptions for affordable housing. The need for affordable housing has been a topic

of widespread discussion during the past several months, culminating in the Tompkins County Housing Summit last week.

Common Council had previously endorsed a resolution ask ing t he New York State Legislature to amend the Real Propert y Ta x Law to a llow taxing jurisdictions to institute such exemptions in May. State Assembly woman Barbara Lifton led the charge in the legislature and the law passed in September and was subsequently passed in the Tompkins County legislature

The paper outlined several demands of the faculty at the bargaining table, including a request that per course pay match that of the lowest paid full-time contingent faculty members on campus,​ most of whom, the paper said, have oneyear contracts equaling $48,000 per year, coming out to $2,000 per credit or $24,000 per year total for a part-timer teaching the maximum load. Presently, part-timers make about $1,40 0 for each credit.

Administration has met with the part-time f a c u lt y i n t he u n ion several times but to no avail. In one instance, the union even walked out of one day’s negotiations in September after which the college offered them a 2 percent raise: equivalent to about a $14 increase per course, from $70 to $84. A rally on campus the following month timed to take place during a meeting of the college’s board of trustees was attended by hundreds of students, faculty and community members, to no result. Prompting the latest action, the union alleged at the December 2 bargaining session, administration offered part-time faculty an even smaller compensation increase than it had previously offered.

In response, the college’s bargaining team said it was “disheartened and frustrated at the adversarial tone, Contin u ed on page 11

for the community that can help many different people for decades down the road.

“Most of these people would never be able to buy a house like this if they were buying it at market rate,” Mazzarella said. “People are buying new, energy-efficient homes, at a reduced price, and paying significantly less per month.”

A report by the Department of Assessment for Tompkins County stated that any effect on the area tax rates would be essentially negligible, despite the loss in tax revenue from t he lower-ta xed af fordable housing properties.

Times went to the city planning department to obtain a copy of documents most recently submitted to the city

by Maguire and found a preapplication form (technically unofficial) submitted by Maguire on December 5. The plans submitted to the city propose a 3,300 square foot addition on the dealership’s existing 6,674 square foot Maguire Resale Center at Carpenter Business Park (located behind Cornell Press’ 742 Cascadilla St. entrance) and would include a 691 car parking lot. Maguire declined to provide a copy of its updated proposal, which should be more in-depth.

One aspect of the proposal, another Greenstar location, could be a possibility said general manager Brandon Kane, who said he heard Maguire was looking to liquidate the property and expressed interest in purchasing a portion of the lot.

He was then approached with a suggestion to potentially partner up on a new development and so far, are in the very early stages of working out an idea.

“These are very preliminary discussions,” Kane said.

“We definitely are interested in exploring all the options but of course, there are a lot of things that need to go through the board for something as big as this.”

This new proposal comes as a response to development at a site that had previously, been the site of a proposed auto dealership that was shot down by the city through the implementation of a planned unit development zone, which made any project on the site subject to the oversight of Common Council.

“Congratulations to all of you,” Hochul said to the hotel’s employees, assembled in the back. “This is a growth area in our state, because of how well we are doing in tourism, and all of you are part of the incredible team that is part of the comeback of this great area.”

The hotel also serves as a

small bump in job creation in downtown Ithaca. Cathy Hart, the hotel’s general manager, said that while the hotel will start with 66 paid employees, that number may grow soon, to possibly 80 or even more.

“We are opening in the slowest time for hotels in Ithaca,” Hart said, adding that this may be advantageous for them in that it gives the staff some time to train on the fly and work out any kinks. “By the time we top out in 2-3 years, depending on how busy we are, it could go up

to 100 employees.”

One of the beneficiaries of those 66 jobs is Autumn Perez, who will be working a front desk job at the new hotel. Perez said the staff is very diverse, and that the job would benefit her greatly, particularly because i n her ex per ience Marriott has the highest wages among Ithaca hotels.

Perez has been interested in hospitality work for a while, and thinks the new Marriott could give her and others the oppor tunit y to ascend t he

A Living Wage For Legislators?

Legislators want a raise for showing up, citizens should be paid to engage in the public process.

A

s 2016 comes to a close, this year’s crop of county legislators gave quite the Christmas present to its future class of administrators for the day when they come into office: compensation for their work equivalent to a living wage in Tompkins County.

This pay raise, t he le g i s l at u re’s first since 2014 and only the second one in eight years, will compensate each of the 14-member governmental body more than $21,000 annually starting in 2018, with the chair of the legislature making 50 percent

above the base salary. This is a wage which, assuming each member of the legislature works 30 hours a week (the average number of hours self-reported by the legislators to the New York State and Local Retirement System and the minimum needed in order to be eligible for full state pension benefits), comes out as equivalent to the living wage in Tompkins County of $13.77 an hour.

went to a meeting at the office of the Ithaca Festival. The woman in the office looked at me quizzically when I introduced myself.

“You’re the State Theater guy?”, she said. “I thought you were the Ithaca Hours guy.”

I didn’t say anything. I supposed I was both, but why would I actually want to be identified as either?

People confuse familiarity with comprehension. As Sonny Boy Williamson once said of his community, a lot of people talk, but ain’t many people know. All too often you get categorized rather than understood.

In an interview once, on the old “Dick Cavett Show,” John Lennon touched upon the ironies of being known but unknown. It was a few years after the Beatles had disbanded, and Lennon lived and worked with Yoko Ono. “I sat in a restaurant in Spain,” he said, “and the violinist insisted on playing ‘Yesterday’ right in my ear.

And then he asked me to sign the violin. I didn’t know what to say. I said, ‘Well, actually...ah, okay,’ and I signed

it, and Yoko signed it. One day he’s going to find out that Paul wrote it.”

It seems a small event to recount, or even remember, much less be bothersome to a figure like Lennon: an errant surmisal from a restaurant player?

Nor is ‘Yesterday’ a bad song to have someone think you wrote. But it bothered Lennon because, wonderful or not, it wasn’t his, and it wasn’t him.

To be known or unknown is okay, a set status. To be known and unknown can be dismaying.

But it’s a common thing in a small town like ours. We try to be ourselves but must make peace in our minds with itinerants. Strolling violinists play in our ears and don’t even know who we’re not, much less who we are.

Your opinions Remembering the Rongo As epitaphs are being written for this incarnation of the Rongovian Embassy, I’d like to salute the restaurant and the kitchen. Sure the Rongo is a great place to hear music. But to many of us citizens of Rongovia, it’s a gloriously comfortable place to hang out with our friends, drink quirky drinks, and eat good homemade food.

I helped cook in the kitchen for the past nine months, and it’s a miracle we cranked out that much genuinely tasty food in such a tiny space. I had a blast with my kitchen-mates, and I’ll miss that as much as chips, salsa, guacamole and a margarita at the bar. So farewell dear Rongo restaurant. This was a delightful lifetime and we all loved our enchiladas. I’m grateful to everyone who helped make it happen.

it was the fact salaries haven’t stayed steady with inflation (2.29 percent on average each year, compared to a .21 percent annual raise for legislators over the past eight years), the need to incentivize talented people to take the time provide their gifts to local government or the message that, by paying someone a living wage to serve, it sends a message of respect and reverence for the position.

Anyone disputing these as good reasons to pay legislators more would be objectively incorrect, if not ignorant of how local government works. It’s a difficult job, it’s oftentimes thankless and if anyone has bothered to regularly attend any function of county government, they would know the main qualification for the role is to stay alert and attentive to mundane details under excruciatingly dull circumstances.

But, at a time when the living wage is not the standard wage of those living in Tompkins County, this pay raise is inappropriate and assumes rather cynically that the only people who care about what legislators do are the legislators themselves. It ignores the citizens who do as they are obligated to do as members of the community, who stay engaged in government, read the agendas and come to the public comment period with a well-thought out response they spent their time after work writing. It determines, or rather, assumes that a $2,000 will make the job accessible to a more diverse group of people when the primary motivation of becoming a legislator should be to serve one’s community.

Yes, legislature needs more diversity among its ranks. But the legislature is not an easy job by design: there should be no incentive to become one other than the opportunity to step up as a leader who fully embodies the identity of your community.

There is some catching up to do for legislature pay, this is indisputable. A more gradual pay raise, similar to a $400 per year raise proposed by Trumansburg’s Jim Dennis, would be a more acceptable means of coming up to par. A better investment of that nearly $24,000 though, might be spending it somewhere else: at the committee and advisory board level.

While currently, all these committees are staffed by members of the legislature, adding extra detail to their duties, the advisory boards are unpaid. We could attract more talent to the advisory board level through actually paying them. Or, if we invested in it, we could attract highly-specialized members of the community to the committee level rather than relegating discussions to legislators, reducing legislator’s time and adding the diversity we seek. While a legislature presence should be a part of our committees to maintain efficiency in the flow of information from the small tables to the big one, so many more people’s voices could be given the encouragement to engage if we made the investment to reconsider our way of doing business: after all, six or eight hours a week is easier to ask for than 30.

Legislators Vote To Raise Salaries To A Living Wage The Tompkins County Legislature voted December 6 to raise legislators’ salary from $19,075 to $21,400 annually for four years starting in 2018, with the chair of the legislature making 50 percent above the base salary.

The amount of the raise was calculated by taking the living wage, which is $13.77 per hour as determined by the local Alternatives Federal Credit Union in 2015, and multiplying it by a 30-hour work week.

Over the last eight years, there has only been one pay raise of $375, in 2014, which means the annual average salary increase has been .21 percent for legislators while the rate of inflation is 2.29 percent and the average annual salary increase for a Tompkins County employee is 2.25 percent.

Local Veterans Return From Standing Rock Several weeks ago, a contingency of 20 local veterans piled into a panel van and made the trip to the Standing Rock reservation in North Dakota to protest the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline. After the Army Corps of Engineers said it would not support the project, the group has returned.

On Thursday, December 15th at 7 p.m., local veteran Michael Blake will speak at the Quaker Meeting House on Third Street about his two recent trips to Standing Rock, North Dakota on what he witnessed and to answer any questions. Michael will specifically reference the spiritual aspects of the non-violent activism which happened there.

Ithaca College Names New Football Coach Dan Swanstrom, the quarterbacks coach at Penn, has been named the 10th head coach for Ithaca College football, replacing the legendary Mike Welch. Swanstrom will begin his appointment at IC on January 3, 2017.

This is his 4th stop, after Penn, Johns Hopkins and the University of Redlands.

Weed Ecology 101

ith medicinal marijuana legalized in 28 states and the recent passage of California’s Proposition 64 legalizing recreational use in yet another state, a local professor is examining the ramifications that extend beyond the consumer. Jake Brenner, associate professor of environmental studies and science at Ithaca College, is part of a team that has been working on a study of the environmental impacts of marijuana cultivation in three counties in Northern California that are thought to produce as much as three fourths of the marijuana consumed in the United States. The findings, he says, have been a surprise to everyone involved.

The tri-county cluster of Humboldt, Trinity and Mendocino–where Brenner has focused his study–have earned the nickname the “Emerald Triangle.” “There, as elsewhere, the so-called ‘green rush’ followed liberalization of cannabis policy, notably the legalization for medicinal use and permitting of grows to supply permitted patients,” Brenner said.

and potential impacts,” was published by the scientific journal Environmental Research Letters last April.

What the team found was an astonishing number of marijuana grows causing probable environmental impact that reaches far beyond the expected. “As is usually the case when people actually measure in a reliable way a phenomenon that has been guessed-at and measured opportunistically (following raids and seizures) all along, we were astonished by the magnitude of the phenomenon in our study area,” said Brenner. The team documented 4,428 cultivation sites, outdoors and in greenhouses, in about half of Humboldt County alone.

While the sites occupied a very, very small land area, they were significantly clustered far from roads, on steep slopes, and in close proximity to threatened and endangered fish habitat. As might be expected, with annual water withdrawals from headwater streams used to irrigate marijuana plants during the driest time of year, it was determined that there are notable risks to those species.

Another issue is that many growers have a practice of placing of rat poison around their plants.

“I never knew that rats eat cannabis,” said Brenner, “but apparently they do.”

As a result, rare carnivores—specifically fish eaters—are being found dead due to rat poison in forests where there is no poison to be found for miles; presumably they are being killed because they ingest the poison by eating rats, but researchers had expected the presence of rodenticide to be clustered around areas populated by humans. What they found was that it was widely dispersed throughout the fisher’s habitat. Perhaps the most exciting finding, said Brenner, and the one that has received very little attention by the scientific community thus far, is that marijuana grows are causing significant forest fragmentation.

“Impacts loom large from the common practice of unofficial road-building,” Brenner said.

IC professor studies the environmental impacts of California’s chaotic “green” rush

In partnership with Van Butsic and students at University of California Berkeley, Brenner and a small team of five IC students in the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences sought to evaluate the impacts of marijuana farming, starting with using geographic information systems (GIS) to spot grow sites from above.

“We set out to do what turned out to be the first-ever systematic survey of cannabis agriculture,” Brenner said. “Our methods were very simple. We gridded the landscape and surveyed a random sample of watersheds, grid-square-by-grid-square, using high-spatial-resolution satellite imagery available in Google Earth.”

This was combined with literary review of published studies on the ecology of the area, of which IC student Kent Bueche was in charge mapping the pot grows, while the other half read literary reviews and wrote up summaries. In this way, the IC team was able to conduct research without ever setting foot in California. The resulting study, titled “Cannabis (Cannabis sativa or C. indica) Agriculture and the Environment: a systematic, spatially-explicit survey

Clearing small patches of forest for marijuana cultivation has a much greater effect on the landscape than previously thought, and this poses a threat to species like the Grizzly Bear, which needs a large uninterrupted habitat to thrive.

“The numbers show us that there is, relatively speaking, a lot of fragmentation going on for the amount of cannabis being grown,” said Brenner.

At the same time, marijuana farming is much more lucrative and far less disruptive to the environment overall than California’s giant timber industry. It’s still illegal to grow weed in California except for just a few plants for medicinal purposes. Though the idea is largely bogus, many people believe they can grow up to 99 plants for medicinal use and avoid prosecution, and Brenner said it was interesting to see how many grow sites had exactly that number.

Still, there are no Federal raids these days in California, Brenner said. Marijuana growers are able to drive up prices due to lack of regulations and the drug’s illegal status nationwide. Bills recently signed into law in California (Assembly Bill 243, Assembly Bill 266, and State Bill 64) represent a defining moment in California’s history of cannabis production, the study notes, by requiring municipalities to develop land use ordinances for cannabis production, forcing growers to obtain permits for water diversions, and introducing seed-to-consumer tracking.

“However,” the conclusion of the study observes, “bringing the industry into compliance is no small task.”

Grows are often located in remote areas, making audits and regulatory enforcement difficult, if not impossible. Cannabis agriculture is practiced primarily by widely dispersed small outdoor producers, and much of the newly proposed regulatory regime relies on self-reporting. Brenner’s team suspects there is a minimum of 5,000 producers in the Emerald Triangle, and the number may be twice as high. For comparison, there are roughly 400 wineries in Napa County.

IN NEW YORK, A MISMANAGED PROGRAM

In contrast with California, New York State has a very small and highly regulated burgeoning medical marijuana market made legal by the Compassionate Care Act, passed in 2014. Under the law, there are only five companies authorized to produce the drug and each one is permitted to have one manufacturing site and four dispen-

saries.

At Etain, LLC, a woman-run familyowned marijuana company with a greenhouse in Warren, New York (in Herkimer County) , Keeley Peckham, chief horticultural officer, heads up the growing operation. She said that there are certain state regulations she must stick to but that Etain goes above and beyond to avoid using harmful chemicals, using a method called integrated pest management.

“If you see an aphid, you release a ladybug, that kind of thing,” she said.

In the event that pesticides are necessary, they are safe for human consumption and don’t ever reach the bud of the plant because they are topical, rather than systemic (meaning they are not absorbed into the plant) and they are not applied to the parts of the plant used to make the drug.

It’s much more expensive than other methods, she said, but it’s good for branding. In the two years since the family embarked on this venture, which began in a cement barn (where it’s still located with greenhouses added on), the company has yet to turn a profit.

In November the New York State Department of Health announced a series of potential new legislation that would expand the medical marijuana program.

Within the last two months, the DOH filed an amendment to the existing laws that would give nurse practitioners the ability to register and certify patients for medical marijuana, which would in theory give patients greater access to the drug.

On December 8 the DOH announced several other enhancements to the state’s Medical Marijuana Program designed to improve access for patients, streamline production, increase choice and eventually, help lead to reduced costs. They include allowing wholesaling of medical marijuana products, removing the cap on the number of products available to patients, defining chronic pain as a qualifying condition, and making it easier for hospitals to allow certified patients to self-administer medical marijuana.

While this is generally viewed by New York’s five distributors as a step in the right direction, one other recent proposal has them worried. A Health Department report published in August recommended that in order to keep up with patient demand the state should double the number of authorized companies growing and selling marijuana. December 8, the New York Daily News reported that it obtained a letter to the state Health Department wherein the trade group representing the

five licensed pot producers said the existing growers are “sustaining tremendous operating losses” and wouldn’t survive if the state moved forward with its plan.

“This market will be incapable of supporting both current and additional registered organizations until patient participation is drastically increased,” the New York Medical Cannabis Industry Association wrote in the Nov. 28 letter.

As of November 29, there are only 750 physicians registered to prescribe medical marijuana in New York State and just 10,730 patients receiving the drug; more dispensaries would probably be a positive thing, Polsinelli said, but the state should allow the five companies that are currently licensed to grow and thrive before adding

MORE GREEN FOR EVERYBODY

Among the very different dynamics of California’s green rush, the economic climate looks very different. Using conservative estimates, Brenner’s team calculated annual wholesale revenues of $150 million from just the cannabis produced in half of Humboldt County alone. Annual retail value would be in the ballpark of $1 billion, he said. To put this in perspective, this estimate exceeds twice the total value of timber, livestock, dairy, nursery, and vegetable crops grown throughout all of Humboldt County, according to Brenner.

“In other words,” he said, “farmers and timber companies, whose operations cover relatively much greater areas, could do better (by two times) dropping all of that and converting to cannabis agriculture. In a county struggling to sustain rural livelihoods without wrecking the environment in conventional land-based agricultural and forestry activities, cannabis looks pretty good as a means toward rural economic development, and all the land spared by cannabis farms could either stay in, or revert back to, forest.”

Legalizing marijuana as a legitimate crop at the federal level would allow the government to put in place industry-wide regulations that would protect both the environment and the consumer, but Brenner says that until cannabis is fully out in the open and regulated its environmental impacts will continue to fly under the radar.

Legalizing it would also likely drive prices down, but Brenner wondered if regulations would lead to the rise of organic marijuana, or “eco weed.” Brands with eco labeling could fetch significantly more on their product.

“It has pretty big economic clout,” he said, adding that consumers may be willing to pay more to know that there are not unregulated pesticides in their weed.

“We have this really great culture, especially in Ithaca, of knowing where our food comes from,” agreed Bueche. “It would be cool if that happened with marijuana — if it was legalized and people could know where it comes from and how it was grown.”

He said that the environmental impacts he has witnesses alone are enough to convince him that the government should consider making weed a legal crop.

“Growing marijuana,” he said, “has a lot more environmental impact than people would think.”

Getting to better know Cornell’s big men a little better over lunch.

ost fans who attend a Cornell game – be it hockey, football, basketball or a number of other sports – never have the opportunity to go behind the scenes and get to know the players and coaches on a more personal basis. I was lucky enough to be invited to be a part of the Cornell Rebounders’ luncheon at the Country Club of Ithaca last week, and it was a lot of fun.

The Rebounders Club’s unofficial mission statement is (according to their website) “to support the Cornell Men’s and Women’s basketball teams, both on and off the court.” Through club events, like

these luncheons and dinners, members have an opportunity to interact with players, coaches, staff and family members in an informal setting, and while the event I attended took place very early in the season, it was clear that the connection benefits all involved.

The luncheon I attended was a men’s team event, and new coach Brian Earl conducted himself like a seasoned pro in getting to know his new fan base and community, and he – like any good assist man – set his players up with opportunities to “score points” by offering a glimpse into their lives.

up and share a little information, like their favorite moments from the season thus far, their holiday plans, things like that. Some of the guys were clearly a bit out of their comfort zone in doing so – especially the freshmen – but they stepped up and did a good job.

Most of the players pointed to the team’s win over Northeastern as their favorite moment so far this year, and rightly so. Northeastern came into Newman Arena having already beaten Connecticut and Kent state, and the Big Red put together their finest collective effort thus far, winning an 80-77 thriller in front of an appreciative home crowd. Northeastern won the Colonial Athletic Association title last year, and any betting lines would have picked them to take care of business against the rebuilding Cornell, but Matt Morgan and the rest of the Big Red had other ideas.

ning bucket with 19 seconds left in the game. Morgan also contributed three assists and six rebounds, and his bigtime effort helped his team give Earl his first home win as Cornell’s head coach.

As I listened to Morgan and several other players that suited up in past years, I admired their attitudes. These are guys that came into Cornell planning to play four years under coach Bill Courtney, but now Brian Earl runs the show, and they are asked to learn a new system under a new coaching staff. I was pleased to see that there is some continuity in place, as Jon Jacques remains on the staff, and that is good on a number of levels, given Jacques also played on the legendary Sweet 16 team of 2010.

When the question and answer period was announced, I asked Brian Earl if the learning curve was shortened due to the fact that he is an Ivy League “insider” on two different levels. After all, he was a very fine player at Princeton (he was the Ivy League Player of the Year in 1999), and he went on to be a part of the Tigers’ coaching staff or several seasons.

Earl responded that he did think that his time on the court and the sidelines did give him some traction as he sets about the task of rebuilding the program.

He knows how important it is to develop and utilize really effective time-management skills, and he knows that Ivy players are among the truest manifestations of the “student/athlete” model, and that in describing them as such, the “student” definitely comes first. Earl know that it will be some time before this program feels like “his” team, but he also knows what he needs to do to move it forward.

misleading allegations, and willingness to disrupt the learning environment for our students,” offering a lengthy statement to the campus community contesting the narrative offered by striking faculty, saying that not only are their faculty facts and figures incorrect (the union, meanwhile, asserts even the college doesn’t know how many part time faculty it has), but that the claims there was a regression in their offer on Dec. 2 was simply, false and suggested the two parties enlist a federal mediator, an idea the college said faculty has shot down.

“The claim that the proposals we presented on December 2 were regressive on this matter is simply untrue,” a statement from the college read. “We value our parttime faculty, and we are bargaining in good faith toward a contract that will increase their compensation and address a number of other important issues.”

In a statement, the Contingent Faculty Bargaining Committee said it hopes the college administration begins to show a willingness to engage in a “serious discussion” with proposals addressing the idea of Equal Pay for Equal Work, but say at this point no such thing has occurred and if it does not, the group will consider a strike at some point in the next semester.

Peter Zibinski, a student and member of Students for Labor Action on campus, said in an ideal scenario, the college will have pay parity between the part-time contingent and full-time contingent, and that students would like to see faculty treated with respect. But, if they were to strike, they would have student support.

“I think that they would, I think that they should,” said Zibinski, on the strike.

“I think that it’s become clear that there are issues, staffing issues with part-time faculty that is reflected in both the multitude of professors who are here for only one semester and then they’re gone, and also a lot of students are having issues with their graduation requirements.”

The next bargaining session is scheduled for December 12, the college stating “if we are not successful in reaching agreement on the remaining outstanding proposals during that session, we will propose additional bargaining sessions to take place prior to the start of the spring semester classes.”

“In the event of a strike, the college will implement a plan to continue the delivery of courses,” the statement reads.

What she sees, she says, is an opportunity to seize from defeat something similar to what the Republicans did in the wake of the 1992 elections. The strategy is one of taking on a “no race is too small” mentality, working to ensure not only more people are running for elected office but doing so in a way that reaches and represents people most effectively. The key comes with listening, Danks-Burke said, getting back to the basics of running every campaign—no matter the size—like a local campaign, embodying the idea people should be engaged in the political process most not from the top working down, but from the bottom up.

“Many of us have voted for change at the very top,” she said, referencing the populist wave that rose on both the right and left in this past year. “But we continue to elect the same old players here in New York State.”

Rochester) said. “We were kind of the new kids on the block who bought the main player in town. They had some changes and were looking for a succession plan and they knew of us and the opportunity we had, so that really gave us a boost.”

In moving into Ithaca, the duo Sciarabba and Wa lker had a vision for their firm they hadn’t experienced yet: they wanted to spin off to have a f lexible, adaptable organization that could change quickly. Whether the occasion was a market evolving or if a client had unique needs, the firm could recognize and adapt quickly.

When the firm first set up in the area, the dynamic of the economy in that Sayre/Ithaca corridor looked significantly different than the one in place today. Unlike the manufacturing past the state was built on–stationary and stable–businesses today cross all sorts of borders, Iles says, so the need to adapt to momentous shifts in the business landscape becomes a major part of the firm’s affairs. Right now, the firm deals in a large international tax practice due to many of their clients affiliated with Cornell and the startups born from it now beginning to do business worldwide.

“Where we believe we can make a difference for our clients is with those startup businesses because we live and breathe that every day,” Iles said. “This is a community because of Cornell University and we will always be putting resources into Rev, for instance… that’s a collaboration of several groups in town and that’s an opportunity for us. The reporting of international tax for individuals… ten years ago, we seldom saw it in this office. Now, we do a lot of work with clients who go overseas, to Italy or something, and there are tax ramifications to that. A lot of clients have moved to Australia and don’t understand the tax implications in our paperless world. Our clients don’t just live in Tompkins County anymore, they span all over, and it’s really exciting for us.”

he second annual Fab Five awards, designed to recognize young professionals around Ithaca, is now looking for its newest class of nominees.

The awards are part of a growing effort to attract young professionals to Ithaca and Tompkins County, but also encourage those who are already in the area to stay as they continue on their career paths.

T he awa rds include five categories, and assign winners for each of non-profit leader, business leader, entrepreneur, rookie and volunteer of the year.

Last year’s winners included Common Council Alderman Ducson Nguyen, Cayuga Medical Center’s Rob Lawlis, Joey Durgin of Black Irish Boxing, Family and Childrens Services’ David Shapiro and volunteer Emily Carroll from Hospicare a nd Pa l lat ive Services.

Officially, the Fab Five is produced by Tompkins Connect, a local organization that operates as a joint initiative between the United Way and the Chamber A b b y P e t e r s o n of C om merce.

Last year’s awards were a success, Brown said, and Tompkins Connect itself has proved beneficial as a tool for young professionals, and said one of the main

goals and even part of the mission is to ensure that if someone wants to begin an economic endeavor in the area, they have a chance to succeed.

“As people come to school and live here, that they have the opportunities to have a rich professional, social, and philanthropic life here in Tompkins County,” Brown said.

“They don’t have to go away to have that complete life, it is available here.”

Abby Peterson, of the Tompkins Trust Company, said the event was borne out of a shared interest between all the sponsors to

highlight some of the inspiring work done by young adults throughout the area.

“Ithaca and Tompkins County has this really vibrant young professional population,” Peterson said. “Not only are people excelling in their fields and careers, but they’re really taking a lot of time to volunteer and give back with the hopes of making this community a better place.”

Peterson said there is hope that the awards will also have implications beyond just the winners. The competition would, in theory, be a boost to the local economy and professional environment.

“The overall goal is to celebrate the achievements of young professionals who are living and working in Tompkins County, but also to inspire leadership among others,” she said. “By recognizing these individuals publicly, the hope is that it will inspire others to maybe push themselves a little bit further.”

Nominations for the Fab Five awards end January 6, and can be submitted at the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce website.

Three New Businesses Open Downtown

igns of economic growth in downtown Ithaca continued with the official opening of three new businesses last week.

Opening up were women’s apparel store Willow, coin collector haven Cayuga Coins, and Escape Ithaca, jumping on the new, “escaperoom” trend.

Rob Gearhart, Third Ward Alderperson on Common Council, played the role of ribboncutter in place of Mayor Svante Myrick.

Standing outside of Willow, he said that the new openings would help the sustained growth of the West End area in the future.

The FAB5 winners will be annouced on February 20th, 2017, at the FAB5 Awards Ceremony and Dinner at Coltivare.

The festivities began at Cayuga Coins, owned and operated by Bob Lisk and Frank Anderson, in Dewitt Mall. The store was formerly known as Harold’s Coins before previous owner Harold Benjamin Jr. passed away this past summer. Lisk was a longtime friend of Benjamin’s, and said he was happy to restore the coin business, which had been there for 40 years.

“We do need coin shops, there’s not many around anymore,” Lisk said. “There’s a lot of collectors here in Ithaca, big and small, and they love the history of the coins and how the coins tell the history.”

Philly DeSarno, Economic Director for the City of Ithaca, also said she was glad Lisk and Anderson were able to re-open the store and provide that service to Ithaca again.

“It’s something that we probably don’t think of all that much,” she said. “But thank you so much for opening this space again and making this available to the community once again.”

Gary Ferguson, of the Downtown Ithaca Alliance, said he was glad to be able to retain continuity in the Dewitt Mall space that had previously housed a coin store for so long.

“Thank you for doing this, this store has been around for 40 years,” Ferguson said.

“This building has institutions in it, places last a long time here. It’s just something about Dewitt Mall […] We’re just grateful that you could come, and we hope you’ll have 40 years as well.”

Wil ow Ribbon was also cut in front of fashionable women’s boutique Willow on West State Street next to the State Theatre, aiming to cater to the high-end female clothing market around downtown. The business has been open since November.

Owner Laura Bishop spoke at the ceremony, thanking those in attendance and the community for their support during her first month of business.

“I just want to say thank you all for being here,” Bishop said. “It’s been a month and so far the local love and support has been amazing, I’m very excited to be here.”

Doug Levine, executive director of the State Theatre, said prior to Willow moving in, there had been a struggle to find a long-term use for the property.

“It’s a unique space and when I looked at it, I just didn’t have the vision they did,” Levine said of Bishop and her husband, Theo. “It is absolutely stunningly beautiful now, and has really lightened up our street here. This part of State Street is really vibrant now, and we’re thrilled to have you guys on board.”

Ferguson thanked the couple, and also said despite the previous struggles of the space he was confident the store would succeed with its owner’s experience and the market in Ithaca.

“Laura has a real background in retailing and we were so excited when she had this interest in doing apparel in Ithaca,” Ferguson said. “This is a community that needs more apparel. It really and truly does, particularly for women.”

Escape Ithaca Ray Weaver and Jim Potocki joined forces to open Escape Ithaca, part of a growing national trend of group entertainment experiences built around escaping from themed rooms using clues. Escape Ithaca is located above State Theatre.

DeSarno and Ferguson both said they were excited that something so current and widely popular was coming to town. Levine said he was glad that the space had found a beneficial, productive use.

“We were thinking of creative uses for this space, and this definitely fits the bill,” Levine said. “We’re so happy, it’s amazing the work you’ve put into this space. If any of you were here just a week ago, it was completely different […] I hope you’re here for many, many years.”

The theme of the rooms will change every three or four months, to keep the experience fresh. Potocki said so far business has been doing well, with a good mix of participants so far. Weaver said there had already been about 400-500 customers attempt the escape.

“It’s a great location, escape rooms are just a lot of fun,” Potocki said. “We get a lot of college people, lot of families, everybody seems to have a good time. It’s really a fun business, it’s nice to see people having a good time.”

The escape room, or puzzle room, is currently holiday-themed, with “Escape the Abominable Snowman”, but he said it would be changing over to a “Lost in the Himalayas”.

The business opened in October during Wizarding Weekend, with a Harry Potter theme.

New Auction House Opens in Dryden

othing much has changed in the appearance at 208 Dryden Road.

The building around the bend is largely the same, only now instead of furniture it’s filled with rare books and sellable collections.

David Hall, owner of Worth Asset Brokerage and National Book Auctions, purchased the old Stevens Furniture building this year. He went through the Dryden planning board in June to repurpose it into an auction house, offering a 10,000-square foot section and a 7,000 square foot section in which the National Book Auctions and Worth auctions would be separated.

On the Worth Asset side, the business brings in items to auction, helping the sellers through what can sometimes be a difficult process. It then provides an online auction platform that reaches globally and helps people get the most for their items.

“We’re not interested in getting things from people,” business manager Kimberly Gazzo said. “We’re interested in getting things to people.”

Gazzo said unlike a bidder who comes in to purchase one thing and try to get the best deal from an owner, Worth Asset looks to get its consigners the highest value for their pieces. It’s part so the business can get the most possible money, but also

“It’s a symbolic relationship,” she said of the work her company does in helping those wishing to sell items.

The first thing Worth does is have the family take all of what its wishes to keep, a lot of which falls into “emotional connections” categories.

Worth then comes in and takes objects it can put in an auction with the bottom line of $100. The experts appraise every item and catalogue it. She said many other auction sites have a bottom line of $5,000, but Worth is able to go lower because of low overhead costs.

“But we can offer the same service, same quality and same reach,” she said.

The family then comes back in if it wishes to either take what’s left or maybe have a yard sale for smaller items. Gazzo said Worth also works with companies to donate items in the third step.

“When we take the whole collection it provides that the less valuable item stands on the shoulders of the more valuable items,” Gazzo said.

The old Stevens Furniture building is set up in a beneficial way for what Worth Asset wanted to do and as a whole it’s much bigger than the previous location.

“They work really well for displaying our items,” she said.

online as the internet began to boom. The gallery opened to “act as an advocate for heirs, institutions and individuals with books and ephemera to sell, who need outside expertise to evaluate and market their material for fair return,” according to the company history.

SL: It’s PG-13, I would say. It’s more about what it’s like to have a really crappy job, and a 12-year-old isn’t really going to get that. It’s about that job that wasn’t all that fun, and looking back on it and laughing about it. And the other thing it’s about is what the season should be about: dreams and children and family, and instead it becomes about waiting in line to sit on Santa’s lap and being frustrated, and shopping and “Did you spend enough money?” Parents are waiting for hours on end to capture this perfect moment, and the kids are crying and everyone’s in a terrible mood. They’ve forgotten what this is all supposed to be about.

The first part talks about getting the job; you’re applying to be an elf. And then once you get the job, there’s training, and all these people coming together to this one place where they’re working as elves.

Maybe they don’t want to be working for Santa, and that makes them a little bitter, and that makes for some great comedy. [laughs] The incongruity of a bitter elf…

Toward the end of the piece, when he’s becoming really frustrated with his job, he jokes about changing his elf name from Crumpet to Blisters. So it’s just this irreverent fun exploration of how silly we are, and that’s true of all of his work. Really, he’s looking at his own experiences and looking at the people he’s surrounded by how odd us humans can be.

IT: What more traditional holiday entertainment are you a fan of?

SL: I’m a huge fan of It’s a Wonderful Life, and my life keeps coming back to A Christmas Carol. I’ve directed it many times.

Interview with Annie Burns

IT: How many years have you been doing these holiday concerts? I saw a review on Amazon from someone who remembers a similar show at Oliver’s in College Town – now CTB – in 1991.

Annie Burns: Um, probably 25 years, maybe more than that – 27 years? We’ve been doing it at the Hangar for the past five years. We’ve done it up at the Carriage House. We always find a place to do our holiday show.

IT: How much of the year is taken up with finding songs and working on that show?

AB: Well, we did a holiday CD in the 90’s. [Tradition: Holiday Songs Old & New, which features songs like “What Child Is This” and “This Christmas”] So we do songs from every culture, a lot of different cultures – Christmas and Hanukah. We do a Persian song, and a couple songs that we wrote. This year is going to be special because Stephanie Bibbie –she’s the gospel director for the choir up the street – anyway, she’s gonna be there with her group, they’re gonna open the show.

And then we’re gonna do our gig. And my daughter Amelia Burns is releasing a book the same day. So the whole theme is homelessness. We want to get all of Ithaca together as one. It’s gonna be cool.

A

few months before Robert De Luca died in 2011, he told his daughter Amelia Burns about an idea he had for a portrait series based on hope, recovery, recognition and cheer. As commissioner of Mental Health for Tompkins County, these were tenets of life he held dear.

Burns, a photographer with a degree in fine arts from Pratt Institute, took her father’s idea and ran with it. The result is Everything Belongs, a book that profiles 59 people who live “homeless” or on the street.

The book, which Burns self-published, will make its debut debut Dec. 16 and 17 at the Burns Sisters Holiday Concert at the Hangar Theatre.

Burns’ mother is Annie Burns, who will perform with her sister Marie and a host of friends. The concert is a benefit for the Rescue Mission Alliance with part of the proceeds donated to the agency, which helps the homeless. Amelia, a former Ithaca Times photographer who now lives in Los Angeles and works as an artist, photographer and performer, will be home for the event.

Ithaca Times: How did you go about organizing the project?

Amelia Burns: I funded the project through a Kickstarter campaign called “The Homeless Photo Booth”. Originally I was going to photograph the subjects in the back of a trailer I drove around in. Like many parts of this project, things changed along the way.

IT: How did you go about collecting your photos and stories?

AB: I approached each subject individually and asked if they would be willing to be photographed. I told them a little about the project. I asked how they came to be homeless, how long they had been living on the street, their name,

and where they were from.

IT: Was there something significant that you found in what most of your subjects shared -- a commonality beyond the fact that they were homeless?

AB: People shared many different reasons why they lived on the street. Many cited job loss, loss of home or residence, unable to find work, and drug addiction. I also came across several people who stated they wanted to live on the street as opposed to living in “normal” society.

IT: How did you get people to agree to be included in the project? Were there some people who didn’t want anything to do with it?

AB: I asked people straight up. There were always people who declined. As with anyone, some people do not like to have their photo taken.

IT: How long did this take you, and how many profiles did you end up with?

AB: This project took a lot longer than I thought it would! I did not anticipate the emotional toll it would take on me to complete each portrait. It took me three years to create this book. However, knowing what I do now, I realize there are many things I would do differently to make the process move faster. I also would have put more of the people’s stories into the book.

I chose not to do that for this book. I wanted it to be a visual experience. My greater vision is to create a much denser book with hundreds of portraits. I don’t believe I could create that in only a continued on page 20

The Burns Sisters (Photo: Patrick Burns) IT: I remember Amelia sang on your first solo album, AB: Yeah, she did. She was eight years old and she sang on this album [laughs]. Our kids have always been part of our shows, and they’re grown-ups now.

Amelia spent three years taking pictures of homeless people, and she would get their stories, find out where they were living,, and where they decided to stay. It’s pretty intense, the photographs, and she’s been working on it for three years. People should bring warm clothes and canned food and other stuff for the homeless to the show, and the Hangar will bring it to the Rescue Mission.

IT: Who else is playing with you?

few years, maybe 10 at the least.

IT: What did you personally take away from the project? Did you learn anything that truly surprised you?

AB: I took away that I could easily be, that anyone could easily be, in the same position. I really feel through my own struggles with depression and addiction, though I am in recovery, I could end up living on the street just as easily and anyone else. I did not anticipate the emotional effect doing this would have on me. I truly believe we are all in this together, and empathy, compassion and understanding of our differences can aid us in helping each other through this life.

IT: Why do you think a project like this would be so important to your dad?

You dedicated the book to him.

AB: He was the mental health commissioner for Tompkins County. He was a social worker, and amazing actor, a dancer, a fool, and the most kind and loving man I have ever known. His sole purpose on this earth was to love people and bring a smile to their face. My dad genuinely wanted to help people, empower, and appreciate them. He did that for me. I miss him every day.

IT: You said there were things that you would do differently regarding the book, in hindsight.

AB: Unfortunately, self publishing is quite expensive. In hindsight I would possibly have published a zine (self-published, small-circulation, often nonprofit books, papers, or websites) which would be less expensive and more available to all.

IT: If people don’t go to the concert, what other way can they get your book?.

with Arlo Guthrie, we were on the road for five years. He’s just a great songwriter and a great guitar player.

And Josh Pincus, who played on our holiday record, he stopped playing for a while and he lives in Rochester, and now he’s back to playing with us.

It’s great to have him back with us again. And we have Doug Robinson, who switches back from bass to guitar. He’ll probably be playing guitar for us.

IT: When you were growing up, what songs caught your ear early on?

AB: I liked that song “O Come O Come Emmanuel”, which was my father’s favorite and my favorite. And then “Little Drummer Boy”. We also do a song called “This Christmas”, which a lot of choruses have done, and we’ll sing that with Stephanie.

She’s put together a little group, and there’s a lot of singers in that family.

She’s great singer, a true gospel singer, and that’s great. I’m especially excited, especially at the end because we’ll all be getting together, and we’re all local Ithacans. It’s a night of Ithaca.

And here’s my daughter, all grown up with a book. And I’m not gonna do politics, but after the divisiveness of the last election, you know, we just want to put politics aside and heal our hearts with singing.

It’s everybody just getting together and figuring out what’s important to them: friends and family. That never changes. It’s good for the soul. Singing feels good. • sell at the event. An Experimental Christmas Trip out with The Cherry’s The Snow Queen

hree local theater troupes brighten the coming weekend with plays for the holiday season. The Cherry offers The Snow Queen, Civic Ensemble presents Bah Humbug! and Theatre Incognita reads from A Christmas Carol.

For the Cherry’s Artistic Director Samuel Buggeln, Hans Christian Anderson’s tale of The Snow Queen provided the perfect opportunity to create a seasonal family offering amidst their more experimental fare, “theater can be always doing something new and surprising, which we love, but [also] it can be a tradition, a thing we go back to year after year that grows in our memories.…

“The story is so trippy and magical that it seemed to fit The Cherry’s aesthetic perfectly. I mean, when you’re creating a company that focuses on unconventional theater, there’s nothing like a story that involves talking flowers and reindeer, and flying sleighs, and sprites battling snowflakes to force you as a director to think outside the box,” he continued.

From the Cherry’s description: “When

little Kai falls into the hands of the Snow Queen and is whisked away from his former life, his best friend Greta begins a fantastical journey to find him, encountering ravens, snowdrops, sages, thieves, and many other eccentric characters along the way.”

The play has been in development for the past nine months. One of the first decisions was to bring master puppeteer Scott Hitz (whose work has been seen locally in the Hangar’s Little Shop of Horrors and the Kitchen’s Hand to God) into the fold.

“There are lots of hilarious slapstick parts, sight gags, goofy comedy, and then more adventurous, suspenseful parts, and then heartfelt parts—and that’s mirrored in the staging tools we’re using,” Buggeln explained, “there’s live acting, there are traditional puppets of different kinds, there’s shadow puppetry, songs— and all these different elements overlap. It’s just a great joyful smorgasbord.”

He adds that poet and National Book award finalist Lyrae Van Clief-Stefanon has written lyrics for “two gorgeous songs [mu-

sic by Paul Leschen] that thread their way through the play— her vision for who the characters are, and the deep imagery of the play, is really breathtaking and unexpected.”

Performer Camilla Schade called working on it “a rollercoaster mashup of the actor’s movement, storytelling, vocal, physical, puppetry, and character skills. That’s a big-time challenge and fun to have to do that with a bunch of really terrific talents.”

Performer Darcy Martin-Rose added, “many of the cast members have been there since the beginning when we read the play as a company in its infant stages. We all fell in love with it then and it’s been pretty magical to watch it morph and evolve into the almost-performance it is today.”

Filling out the cast are Erica Steinhagen (as the Snow Queen), Robin Mazer as Greta, Helen T. Clark, Jordan Dunn-Pilz, Jeffrey Guyton and Josh Sedelmeyer. There are five performances, Friday through Sunday, in the Kitchen Theatre. Tickets at TheCherry.org.

Don’t Mess With Texas Ithaca’s newest chain restaurant

ust before the turn of the current century, while we had plenty of good, some great, local restaurants, Ithaca’s floodgates opened to usher in a slew of chain restaurants, especially along the Elmira Road “Million Dollar Mile.” The Texas Roadhouse is the latest of these, a steak house with reasonable prices, line-dancing servers and, for the season, a sound bed of Christmas carols crooned by the country and western idiom’s finest. Evidently, this is a recipe for success, as throngs have patronized the place since it opened.

One draw is its many early-bird specials priced at $9.99, served Monday through Thursday from 4 to 6 p.m. including country-fried chicken, pulled pork, and pork chop dinners and a variety of dinnersized salads. There’s an equal number of kids’ and “rangers’” (up to 12 years old) meals starting at $3.99. Steaks are on the higher end, ranging from $10.99 for a sixounce sirloin to $26.99 for a Porterhouse T-bone, but most dinner entrees on the Texas Roadhouse’s extensive menu range from $10 to $12.

We arrived early on a Monday evening, since we’d heard there might be long

waits. At 5 p.m. the lot was already pretty full, but we snagged a parking space and were ushered right in. The large staff, both management and servers, issued friendly greetings, seemed pretty happy to be there, and checked in on us from time to time during the evening, bringing us warm, sweet rolls with whipped honey butter and offers of refills.

Since the Roadhouse hadn’t yet hit its rush hour peak, a few of the staff practiced their line dancing moves in a rare quiet corner, but even early on a Monday evening the joint was jumping. Neon beer signs commanded every view, and a quartet of oversized screens dominated the bar. No matter who’s your team, there’s a screen for your game.

We contemplated our menus, picking away at a handful of peel-‘em-yourself peanuts and a bathtub-sized Margarita, which received kudos from your review team’s Margarita maven. Unfortunately, its arrival heralded the beginning of the “up-sell,” an effort to get us to buy more and more trimmings, in this case, an additional “kicker tube” of booze to juice up the drink’s alcohol content. This, coupled with

the fact that there were no prices on the drinks list, made us wary. In fact, it really ticked me off. But then the food arrived.

We enjoyed a New York strip steak, rare, as ordered, artfully grilled to crosshatched perfection, tender and delicious, accompanied by a crisp and salty Caesar salad and a large baked potato coated with flaky crystal salt. this size, but alas, the pressured framing of creation that prefers gigantic space, makes for a sort of unfortunate bungling: the intent is there, but the execution falters.

Where the small works do succeed there is bountiful space. Take Flight, an sort of watercolor-like singularity, is small, but acts large. Its movements reinforce the overall intent: to move through space and depressurize the mind of the viewer.

It’s not cluttered and flat like Pine Cones and Backwoods Glance, small works that seem to have been imprisoned by their housing environment (their frame). Taken metaphorically, the small works may act as a stepping-stone, ideologically, as part of Mink’s journey through winter,

finished piece of art is but a fleeting glimpse into the mind of an artist.

Yet it is this particular starting point where one engages first contact, thus, the need for something ominous, or rather, bold, is necessary for further development and deeper communication. The work in and of itself may not necessarily fulfill every component of a complete connection with the viewer (mostly it needs to offer an invitation), but it needs to be bold. Hidden beneath the apparent, lies the inner truth of association. Abstraction is the form that speaks in riddles, but attracts the innermost part of man. Being bold is a necessary demand of an artist, particularly an abstract one.

Barbara Mink is a local artist that is seemingly all over place.

She showcases from gallery to gallery like some magical bouillon. And often, her work is bold. She’s clearly one of the more pursued and particular of the city’s small group of showing artists. Some pieces are truly fantastic (see Erasures I and Storm on the Lake on her website), speaking a language that is deft, heady, and poetic. Space is the key to her work: her relationship to her art in a working environment, in a contextual environment, and in the way her premeditated arrangements adapt on a canvas.

Johnson Museum through this Sunday, “JapanAmerica: Points of Contact: 18761970” explores this artistic interchange through the lens of the world’s fair. Rich and thoughtful throughout, the exhibit is the brainchild of Nancy E. Green, the museum’s curator of European and American Art, Prints & Drawings, 1800– 1945.

“JapanAmerica” includes over 200 objects, many on loan. These are grouped chronologically around major American fairs: Philadelphia in 1876, Chicago in 1893, Buffalo in 1901, St. Louis in 1904, San Francisco in 1915, Chicago in 1933, New York in 1939 and 1964. The exhibit concludes with Montreal 1967 and

Japan’s first international exposition, held in Osaka in 1970. Included are prints, paintings, sculptures, decorative objects— as well as souvenirs and bric-a-brac.

Ukiyo-e woodblock prints were central to the popular visual culture of Japan’s Edo period (1603-1868). Mass produced and affordable, these images of the “floating world” played a key role in japonisme, influencing French artists particularly with their vivid colors, flattened space, decorative abstraction, and everyday subject-matter.

HeadsUp A genre spectacular

ack in 1994 when Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction were both Oscar front-runners, someone actually got the films’ directors–Robert Zemeckis and Quentin Tarantino–together for a champagne-and-sushi summit interview when both filmmakers were at the height of their power. It turned out that Tarantino was a massive Zemeckis fan, the kind who knows every line of Used Cars by heart.

The two men also talked about their mutual love of the WWII film genre, which Zemeckis particularly loves. And now, nearly 40 years after co-writing Steven Spielberg’s 1941, Robert Zemeckis finally gets a chance to build on the genre, doing it with the new film Allied, which stands as one of the better entries of its type since Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds, both of which happen to star Brad Pitt.

As Allied begins, Pitt parachutes into the desert of French Morocco in 1942.

After walking in the desert for some time, a car picks him up. As he examines the suitcase on the seat next to him–the one with the secret compartment underneath for guns–his driver hands him a jewelry box. Inside is a ring.

“Your wife is wearing a purple dress,” says the driver. “Look for the hummingbird”.

And so we learn that Pitt is a WWII intelligence officer and that the woman posing as is his wife is a French resistance fighter played by Marion Cotillard. The two are stationed in Casablanca in order to plot the killing of a German official.

She helps him with his French accent, and he reveals himself to be in possession of a certain set of skills that prove useful behind enemy lines. As they work more and more intimately together, they are inevitably attracted to each other, particularly when they meet for romantic interludes on their rooftop to better fool the neighbors.

At this point, I’ll stop talking about the story to spare its surprise, because there’s a lot more going on as Pitt and Cotillard fight their attraction for each other as the mission and its aftermath gets more complex and painful. It’s as if the first half of the film is the breathless war adventure and the second half is the price paid for it.

Like Tarantino, I am a massive Zemeckis fan, and it’s great to see him back shooting real actors on real sets after his motion-capture period on stuff like The Polar Express and Beowulf. Allied doesn’t

It’s also fun to watch Zemeckis put his own stamp on such a well-worn genre, though I’m inclined to credit screenwriter Steven Knight for a moment at a house party where we see Pitt’s British compatriots snorting cocaine from a silver platter, a moment I don’t remember from, say, Casablanca. I like seeing Zemeckis’ irreverence still alive at such

moments.

You may wonder why we need yet another WWII movie. Aren’t there enough? Well. Pitt and Cotillard are perfect casting, as they straddle the beauty of classic Hollywood and the darkness and ambiguity of the modern age. There are certainly parallels between Pitt’s cocky operative and his arrogant detective from Seven.

And as Zemeckis said to Tarantino, it’s nice to see characters speaking the way they spoke, as opposed to lines like “Hey, pipe down, you gold bricks!” •

A collective that promotes local playwrights, actors, and voices out of the mainstream, Theatre Incognita is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization that supports creative individuals working in fields like the performing arts, the visual arts, and everything in between.
