cross the Finger Lakes r e g i o n r e s i d e nt s a r e being warned about the presence of Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs), and more specifically, blue green algae seen across Cayuga Lake. Because of HABs found on either side of the lake, several beaches and public parks, at one time or another over the last several weeks, have been closed.

According to the New York State Health Department, symptoms of contact with HABs can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea; skin, eye and throat irritation, allergic reactions, and trouble breathing. If exposed, the health department recommends rinsing off thoroughly with clean water, and report suspicious blooms to the state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).

Cayuga Lake is the centerpiece of the Finger Lakes, and a tourist destination for all three counties that surround it. But the algae don’t recognize county lines and will travel from Cayuga to Seneca to Tompkins as the wind blows.

In Tompkins County, resident Will Wittlin is concerned that the issue is far more dangerous than it has been presented.

As a free swimmer who has lived in the area for about 25 years, he is familiar with the safe spots to swim and enjoy the lake. Last Sunday he was doing just that at the north point near Taughannock Falls State Park, when his breathing became difficult and he noticed the water was discolored and full of floating “things” about the size of his thumb.

“Within about four minutes I had a hard time breathing,” Wittlin said. At first, he wrote it off as anxiety and stayed in for a while longer. “It was probably the worst swim of my life.”

When he had a chance to stop and look around, Wittlin said everything in the area looked dead; where he was used to clear water and stunning views. continued on page 11

A By The Books Approach To Re Entry

A

s criminal justice reform gains momentum throughout the country, there has been increased demand for municipalities to provide ways to avoid incarceration, particularly in liberal strongholds such as Tompkins County.

Opportunities, Alternatives and Resources (OAR) of Tompkins County is the latest organization to answer the call with the implementation of its College Initiative Upstate program. CIU

is designed to help those with criminal records re-enter society via education, seeking to smooth the transition from inmate to freedom by guiding participants through the college application process and providing preparatory classes, among other things.

Prior to students leaving jail, they can request meetings with academic counselors and have week ly college prep sessions through CIU while after they are released, the program helps them

On Esty Street, A Park Instead Of A Parking Lot

I

n a city intent on development, it can be hard to find a space of green grass that is not soon destined for hosting a building or parking lot.

But the lot next to the CFCU C o m mu n i t y C r e d i t Un i o n branch on Esty Street will remain green for the foreseeable future, along with various other hues of vegetation after the ribbon was cut on the new Esty Street community garden at the location on Monday afternoon.

The garden is a collaboration project between CFCU, GreenStar, Cornell Cooperative Extension and Loaves and Fishes. After

OAR lists on their website that despite Tompkins County’s generally moderate incarceration methods (while the country’s incarceration rate has skyrocketed during the last few decades, Tompkins’ has remained relatively steady) inequities persist in the jailed populations. Lucas Hahn is one of the beneficiaries of that mission already.

He addressed the class members with his own experiences, having spent time in Tompkins County Jail after picking up a drug charge in 2013 and finding himself a bit aimless before connecting with CIU about a year ago.

“Being a felon anywhere is difficult, but especially in applying to school,” he said, thanking Rubenstein specifically for her assistance. Hahn plans on continuing his computer science education elsewhere after his time at Tompkins Cortland Community College. “They’ve provided me with scholarships for both semesters helping me with my books, and helped me again tremendously in finding

where I want to go for a four-year school.”

Ha hn is now apply ing to Brooklyn College in New York City, and credits the program with helping him realize and attain that next step in his life. The numbers seem to reinforce CIU’s thesis that education can be a true agent of change for those behind bars or newly released: a study published last year by the RAND Corporation stated that people are up to 43 percent less likely to end up back in custody after they’ve been enrolled in virtually any education program while in prison or jail. Plus RAND alleges a financial benefit for the community, as every dollar invested in correctional education, as they call it, saves almost five dollars in reincarceration costs over three years.

CIU does appear to have one important ally who will prove crucial to its future success: the law enforcement system it wants to reform, at least in Tompkins County. Judge Rick Wallace, who serves on the Ithaca city bench, also addressed the group, expressing support for their mission on behalf of himself and fellow Ithaca judge Scott Miller. He said the two judges had already started integrating the program into their decision-making process, listing participation in a CIU orientation as an acceptable substitute for probation, community service or even incarceration in pre-trial screening.

“We really believe strongly in the value of this program, and we are glad to be participating in it,” Wallace said.

Catholic Education May Continue Locally

In Lansing, “Old News” Becomes A Campaign Issue

A

fter three months spent in limbo, the effort to save Immaculate Conception School (ICS) has resulted in a new Catholic grade school, with a new name and a new location.

A press release last week a nnou nced t hat t he school, which will take the title of Our Lady of Fatima School, will be in the Lansing Plaza and is “on the cusp of opening for the 20172018 school year.”

The Diocese of Rochester had announced on May 10 that ICS would not be re-opening for the 2017-2018 school year, as diminishing enrollment, and subsequently falling revenue, made operating the school infeasible.

Father Augustine Chumo, Pastor of Immaculate Conception parish, said at the time he made a request to the diocese to close the school permanently, as he could not guarantee payment for teachers for the upcoming school year.

Parents were incensed that the school waited that late in t he school year to ma ke t he announcement, and felt there hadn’t been enough effort made to market the school and save ICS, a sentiment the diocese and

Chumo rejected. That spurred them to form Friends of ICS (FICS), a group originally dedicated to funding an ICS reopening which would have ta ken around $120,000.

Waterfront Legislation Moves Ahead

t may not look very glamorous, but Common Council pushed through two pieces of legislation Wednesday night that will mold Ithaca’s long-term planning future in two essential areas of the city.

The night’s festivities began with a rather brief consideration of a street-level active use ordinance, aimed at further creating the pedestrian-friendly future on which the city has set its sights.

The new active use requirements are an extension of existing rules on the Primary Commons, which state all street-level storefronts must be “active use,” or engaged in commercial activity. The ordinance pushes the boundaries of said rules outward, now stretching to parts of East Buffalo Street, west to parts of South Geneva Street, east to just past the Commons (think

of Cafe Napoli as the opposing border) and between the Tompkins County Public Library and Cayuga Street Parking Garage.

Alderperson Cynthia Brock suggested a similar plan may be fitting for the Route 13 corridor, though no plans are currently in development for such an ordinance.

With time running out on the Waterfront’s Temporary Mandatory Planned Unit Development (TMPUD), set to expire this month, the city’s Planning and Economic Development Committee advanced plans for the rezoning back in April after more than a year of formulation by a working group.

Essentially, the re-zoning will divide the Waterfront area into four districts with their own differentiated zoning, crafted to assemble a diversified waterfront

The area will be split in three districts: West End/Waterfront District’s primary uses would be water-related light industrial uses as well as the commonly allowed business zoning with no residential construction. Cherry Street District would allow any permitted use in the West End/ Waterfront District, along with light industrial uses, large scale breweries, and food production.

Newman District would primarily be used for retail, restaurants, clubs and lodges, theaters and bowling alleys, hotels, boatels (that’s right), and playgrounds.

Market district would have the same primary use allowances as the Newman District, in addition to health care facilities, bed and breakfasts, food production and others.

wo weeks ago, local environmental group Fossil Free Tompkins – in conjunction with the Sierra Club – hosted a film screening at The Space @ Greenstar.

“From The Ashes,” a 2017 documentary produced with funding from Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Sierra Club and National Geographic, is billed as a film that goes beyond the rhetoric of the “war on coal” to tell the “heartbreaking stories behind the battle lines:” the local impacts of the coal industry and how a reliance on the fossil fuel has hurt American towns.

The hook of the event was not the film itself, but the topic of the discussion that followed: What’s next for the coal-powered Cayuga Power Plant, and what should be done about its practice of pollution without hurting Lansing’s tax base? “This isn’t a come see a movie and go home night,” said Irene Weiser, the chair of Fossil Free Tompkins, at the close of the evening. “This is a get your blood pressure up and do something night.”

Though a long-standing issue in the Lansing community, the event itself presented an interesting episode in the lead-up to the 2017 local elections given the potential of the plant – and the ideology behind it – to continue running on coal for the next three years, despite proven detrimental impacts to the environment. How About Affordable Commerce?

I

t was with great dismay that last week, we at the Times typed up a story on the closing of The Enchanted Badger, a quirky gaming store on Route 13 that was part retail store, part community center.

It was a cool place, had a loyal following and filled a niche that, in the Finger Lakes, is very poorly served. By any measure, it was the model of a good business, and budgeted within their means: situated in an obscure, but affordable storefront where the window shoppers rip by at 45 miles per hour.

In business, we all know location is everything and commercial renters know it too.

There’s a reason a game shop that relies on events to keep people coming in the door, rather than by moving product, would be located in a site that costs between $8 and $12 per square foot a month, compared to commercial rents that can run two, three, sometimes four times that, according to figures on the real estate site Loopnet. From a business’s perspective, compensating for the lack of organic exposure relies on a lot of extracurricular legwork: more promotions, a better social media presence, word of mouth, that might do the trick in a small town: this is the stuff that builds a reputation. But this is a transient town, our daycationing consumer base spending their time in spaces where reputations relies on first impressions from your Commons storefront. These spaces are gate kept – prohibitive by the cost of their sign-on lease – barred to dreamers who might have the opportunity to start something really special that can add a new dimension to our most treasured tourist hub.

While we’re not there yet, there is a warning in the fate of other cities, places where limited space and rising demand have pushed out all

but the Duane Reades and TGI Fridays of the world.

We need to make moves to keep Ithaca downtown retail weird, to truly reflect the freewheeling, hip culture that keeps us cool in a region of big boxes and dead malls.

There are plenty of great resources to start a business locally. We have kind lenders, an even kinder economy. Affordable retail space can be found in plenty of spaces: it’s sometimes surprising to see exactly how many businesses we can shoehorn into an assortment of spaces, in places like Press Bay Alley and the DeWitt Mall. And our promotional efforts – from the Commons itself to a hands-on Chamber of Commerce and an enthusiastic Downtown Ithaca Alliance – do plenty to get feet on the bricks and get people coming downtown. There’s plenty we’ve done to sustain businesses, recognizing completely that our tourist-centric economy relies heavily on foot-traffic and dollars spent. But are we doing enough to create more affordable retail space and, down the road, to protect the space we have for the quirky retailers that make us, us? Businesspeople are smart, they know how to make money, and will adapt their clientele and inventories to reflect that: they need to pay their rent and they need to put food on the table. So what will we do if demand for our vibrant downtown becomes so great, those $45/square foot storefronts rise to Duane Reade numbers?

We don’t have a problem yet: storefronts are being filled. Our shops are appropriately funky.

But, as demographics changed the face of our housing, we should consider how change can impact the soul of our commercial district as well.

t is very distressing to hear that the New York State Board of Elections has agreed to release voter information to the federal Election Integrity Commission. Although the release of this information through Freedom of Information Law requests is not uncommon, this particular request is a veiled threat to our state’s voters. It is our fear that the collection of this data will ultimately lead to an increase in voter suppression. The Commission is already having a negative impact on our voters. The League has received many phone calls from individuals wishing to “unregister” themselves and remove themselves from the state voter database in order to remain anonymous to this commission. We encourage all voters to stand strong in the face of oppression. Get registered, stay registered, and VOTE in all upcoming elections.

An Outrageous Question

B

esides the awkward construction of the ‘Question of the Week’ about the Cayuga Power Plant, I had to laugh at the framing of “if any other option would kill Lansing’s tax base.” Now that’s a legit survey question for sure!

You may as well run another evenhanded question such as “Are you willing to pay all the extra costs of climate change, mercury deposits into our lake and drinking water supply, and eventual clean-up costs of the coal ash landfill at Cayuga Power so that Lansing won’t have to figure out how to diversify its tax base and the rich hedge fund plant owners can escape all responsibility?!”

(And I say that as a Lansing taxpayer for the past 38 years.).

Taking Local Action Against National Discrimination

ast week, Donald Trump announced that he doesn’t want transgender people serving in any capacity in the military. For myself, and many others who are trans, non-binary and gender non-conforming, serving in the military isn’t at the top of our list of priorities.

Many of us would rather see the military budget spent on human services: Inclusion should look like access to jobs, housing, healthcare and other basic human needs. Nevertheless, when the president targets us, every trans and gender nonconforming person, regardless of military status, is dehumanized and made even more vulnerable to the violence we navigate every day.

But this isn’t a plot twist for the Trump Administration. It’s exactly what we should expect, another swing in the ongoing assault on the dignity, well being and fundamental rights that we, our neighbors, our friends, and our colleagues deserve. Today it was the transgender, non-binary and gender nonconforming community. Yesterday, it was immigrants. Before that Muslims. Before that millions that depend on Planned Parenthood. So how do we start acting like we expect this and stop the cycle of shock and despair that keeps us immobilized?

Fortunately, within the scope of the county government, there are two big opportunities to move proactively and progressively to protect our community and break out of playing defense.

First, Tompkins County has a New York State Constitutional Right to pass an anti-discrimination law creating a Fair Hearing Board which would handle human rights complaints related to jobs, housing, and discrimination in places of public accommodation on the basis of all federal and state protected classes, as well as additional local protections.

So why does a county level law matter?

Aren’t state and federal laws enough?

In fact, until 2008, the State Division of Human Rights had an agreement with the Tompkins County Office of Human Rights to enforce the State’ Human

Rights Raw. But, when the agreement between the county and state expired, the number of human rights complaints dropped annually from around forty to almost twenty. That change wasn’t because discrimination stopped overnight, but because resolving human rights complaints through the state can take years, during which time complainants can lose their jobs, homes, and experience escalated violence. When you experience those conditions, a multi-year legal fight doesn’t always seem worth it.

A county law matters, and it’s more important than ever under the administration of Donald Trump.

The second opportunity comes in the form of four major upcoming Tompkins County administrative vacancies: Director of the Department of Social Services, Tompkins County Planning Commissioner, Tompkins County Administrator, and the Director of Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services. For each of these positions, it is essential that our community publically calls for cultural competency, experience working with diverse communities, and a professional track record of working in human rights as core qualifications in hiring for these essential county positions. These qualifications have equal importance to technical job skills; viewing them as secondary is not a mistake our community can afford to make.

It’s time for Tompkins County to live “Diversity through Inclusion” – the county motto for hiring. In other words, to make equity, inclusion and diversity a core value in every decision we make.

Otherwise, we’ll be stuck on the defensive, in a constant barrage of attacks from a federal government that cares little for our community members who are the most marginalized.

The request included a commitment to implement recommendations made in a 6-month study by the Rochester-based Center for Governmental Research (CGR) that recommended ways to reduce the County’s jail population through alternatives to incarceration, detox and drug/alcohol rehabilitation facilities, and other improvements in the criminal justice system. Included with the variance request was a letter from Tompkins County Legislature Chair Michael Lane that there will be funding allocated in the 2018 budget, which will be presented next month, to implement CGR’s recommendations.

MYRICK: This is all so sudden.

TRUMP: “Secretary Myrick.” Got a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? Just sayin’. You wouldn’t mind living in the nicest house in Georgetown, a couple of high-level diplomatic trips a year, maybe once in a while, Europe. A few extra rubles in your pocket. You wouldn’t mind that, would you, Svante?

MYRICK: What about my job as mayor of Ithaca?

TRUMP: Oh, confound it man, are you afraid of success? I’m offering you the deal of a lifetime. The big time! A seat at my table! Now is it a deal or isn’t it?

MYRICK: Well, Mr. President, I... I... I know I ought to jump at the chance, but I... I just... I wonder if it would be possible for you to give me twenty-four hours to think it over?

TRUMP: Sure, sure. Talk it over with your people. In the meantime, I’ll tweet how great you are. Soften up my base.

Cornell Climate Scientists Introduce Interactive Drought Atlas Cornell University’s Climate Smart Farming program has added a new online tool – the New York State/Northeast Drought Atlas – to help farmers adapt to a warming world. The atlas presents drought severity state-by-state, countyby-county, for the entire region from 1950 to the present. The drought maps will be updated monthly, with an online newsletter for users.

In a bygone era, farmers used their knowledge and experience passed down from generation to generation when making farming and crop decisions, explained Jonathan Lambert, former program manager at CICSS. “Last year, we didn’t get enough water.

This season we have a huge amount of rain,” said said Allison Chatrchyan, director of the Cornell Institute for Climate Smart Solutions. “Farmers are seeing extremes – and they are beginning to connect it to the bigger issue of a shifting climate. A majority of farmers believe that the climate is changing. And now we finally have more tools to help them reduce their risks.”.

ictoria Romanoff stands at the head of a large, recycled pine table from an 1830s era barn door in the basement of her Trumansburg home, her life story spread in front of her in boxes and piles.

A hodgepodge stack of newsprint, photographs, letters and rubberstamped, government documents, they are the clippings of a family legacy spanning three continents, smidgens of an immigrant’s origins from a chaotic upbringing to a docile, peaceful life across the Atlantic and the comfortable dominion of Tompkins County. These are the culminations of nearly four decades of searching: an attempt to make coherent a life that – for all its characters and complexities – could never be told through the perspective of one, single storyteller. It’s a story of lives lost, lives lived, and a university library on the tip of Manhattan island: the culmination of opportunities seized and persistence applied.

It’s an example of a story that, for countless millions, would be lost in the waves of history, a changing world ripped apart and defined by the violence of the past century that reshaped the course of human history, taking countless stories with it. Like the sacking of the Library of Alexandria before it, it may never be known how much was lost in the chaos of the second world war, how many associations and accomplishments were lost, how many storytellers were silenced among

How A Family’s Story Survived War, Revolution And Turmoil En Route To The Columbia University Archives.

Romanoff refused to let that happen and today, her family name will be forever preserved in the archives of Columbia University: an escape from the obscurity that befell untold scores of names and legacies under the fog of chaos.

The story of how she got it there is complicated. *** Romanoff’s journey actually begins with a great uncle, Vladimir Krymov, and a need to understand the standing the family had – and lost – on the European continent.

Rather obscure today, for a time in history, the name Krymov was one you could hardly escape on the elite end in Russian society. A novelist, newspaper man and pundit, Krymov was a mouthpiece of high society in pre-Leninist Russia, an intellectual whose voice resonated with a generation dispersed by a changing world: the laureate of the Tsarist Regime’s dying days, a cryer for the cause of social stability in the face of tumultuous change. Well-known among the aristocracy living in the capital, Krymov counted members of the Romanov family, such as Grand Duke Andrei Vladimirovich and the Moscow Marshal of the Nobility as acquaintances, his connections establishing him as a powerful voice in world affairs, a champion of social conservatism in the midst of a society made vulnerable by the working class

hostilities that birthed the century’s socialist movements.

Even after his retreat from the country, the novels he wrote in the twenties and thirties were very much valued by Russian emigrants of a similar mind, his work influential enough to even translated into English and published in Great Britain, a world away from the spires of the city he once called home.

There, he was editor of one of Saint Petersburg’s most widely read daily newspapers at the time before, in 1914, taking on the role of an inf luential commentator on Russian society as the chief mind behind cultural magazine Stolitsa i usaďba (City and Country Estate). An elitist publication, the magazine was subtly political despite its claims otherwise, a publication that attempted to present the crucial role of the nobility in Russia’s past and its importance in the political, social and cultural life of its citizens in the years before the Leninist Revolution in 1917. Its mission, and the regime, failed and, shunned by the working class movement retaking the country, Krymov left Russia, traveling across the continent on train, sled and ship with nothing more than two valises of cash and a conviction to re establish his life.

Vi c t o r i a R o m a n o f f at h o m e ( P h o t o s : C a s e y M a r t i n) Between the lives and legacies left behind in the first half of the 20th Century, it may never be possible to account for all that was lost in the turbulence that shook the European continent during that period.There is a certain permanence though, in the written word as a vehicle for one’s voice even long after it ceases to be heard, an ability to reach places their writers may never see in a lifetime.

“The Russians go,” Krymov, a highly mobile individual in his own right, once wrote, “but do not travel.”

Little did he know. *** Before Romanoff came to America as a teenager in the 1950s, she lived with her mother Tatiana and, occasionally, her father, on a farm in the center of the Latvian farm country: a compromise between Tatiana’s birthplace 350 miles east, in Saint Petersburg, which she n e v e r s a w again. Divorced before she was born, Vicky’s mother didn’t talk about him much; when they were together, she said, tempers would flare and books would fly, so their story was always a mystery. He had volunteered as a soldier in the first world war at the age of 19, serving as a member of a company in the conflict before early capture kept him locked away for four long years. The violence of the war didn’t avoid him, how-

ever, the war forever becoming a part of him in the form of glass shards, embedded in his skull after a bombing run on his prison blew out the windows, killing his cellmate. A soldier by trade, he met Vicky’s mother around the time he was in the service of the Latvian merchant marines, captain of a ship coincidentally called the Titania. Tatiana was a worldly woman, on her second marriage after a stint with a Finnish poet and fluent in seven languages, who raised Vicky in a life of comfort and relative opulence. As a child, Vicky loved to travel, ride horseback and, with her brother, were anticipated to begin school in Switzerland when they reached school age.

This future was expected even after a move to the Latvian capital of Riga – her father’s birthplace – and the taking of the city by German forces in 1941, where Nazi troops were greeted as liberators in the aftermath of Russian executions and mass deportations. “Our lifestyle when we left; we had everything,” she remembered.

Three years later, a six-year-old Vicky Romanoff was to have her life change.

Vicky remembers that day in 1944 she was told they were to leave, dragging a fish by the tail from the sea for supper. The Soviets set to make their return to retake the city from Nazi control, it was clear to Tatiana that their return would mean death or deportation, the conflict to come as destructive as the scourge that had gutted the rest of Europe. Their fate clear, Tatiana arranged a false marriage to a German pilot (Vicky never learned his name, even with photographs of the man in her possession) and obtained documents needed to flee the Baltic States. With false documents pinned to the inside of her blouse, little luggage, frayed nerves and a changed name to fool the Gestapo, Tatiana left the following morning with Vicky and her brother for the refugee camps in Hamburg, Germany – known otherwise as DP camps. This was to

be their home for eight years. *** The 1920’s were kind to Vladimir Krymov.

Decidedly not a fan of life in Japan, Krymov took his fortune back to Europe, choosing to land in the liberal city of Berlin. A kind city even as the stirrings of nationalism began to simmer up, Krymov got established in a large apartment, using a share of his fortune to purchase 20 building lots and truly set down roots. Even in a city that, largely, was against the rise of Adolf Hitler and his message of ethnic populism, the city was still highly suspicious of Russian immigrants.

This became clear after, coming home one day, Krymov returned to the sight of a ruined home, the brownshirts of the time poring over his possessions for anything incriminating. In anxiety, Krymov sold the lots for double their worth, wrote about the incident, and moved to Paris, where he buys a villa – Vlaber, named for himself – in Chateau, on the Seine River, a residence once occupied by the likes of WW1 spy and dancer Mata Hari and ‘Gaslight’ actress Ingrid Bergman (purchased after Krymov’s death in ‘68), among other notable names.

He was a showy, if unbeloved, figure of Paris’ Russian community. Though stingy in his personal life, a symptom of his humble upbringings and unabashed ambitions fuelled by blackmail and a keen understanding of the meaning scandal, Sundays at the Krymov household would often feature scores of emigré literary giants to entertain. His ambition was to become a rich man and die a rich man, and accomplish this he did.

In the same city his nephew – and Tatiana’s brother – Dimitri Ivanov would die a different death. A science fiction writer, Krymov never thought much of Dimitri’s work and throughout his life, never supported it, either emotionally or financially. While lit-

tle can be found of his work, Ivanov a least made a living with his writing, albeit a meager one. Yet, as the ‘30s came to a close, fate came to pass and Dimitri caught tuberculosis. Krymov, still as wealthy as he was frugal, did nothing, leaving Dimitri no more than a pauper’s grave and death – in 1938 – on a Parisian street bench, among writers and vagrants.

“My mother never forgave him for that,” Romanoff said. “But Dimitri got his wish. He said, ‘don’t worry about me, I’m dying in Paris. I always wanted to die in Paris.’” *** Some found life in the German DP camps intolerable: crammed into small six foot by eight foot rooms with no furnishings beyond their cots, there was no space for anyone to move about. Life carried on in abandoned Hamburg military bunkers constructed on a leveled Jewish graveyard, little more to do for those eight years than tend the chickens and bide their time. (they had tags – “like cattle,” she said) The train station was half torn apart, the streets still hot from the bombing.

Journeying to the United States was the ultimate goal but, impatient, Vicky’s father collected her brother and emigrated to New Zealand in ‘51 – he disqualified for immigration to the states due to a spot on his lungs, where he died soon after. But Tatiana and Vicky had few other options, and found themselves in wait as long as they did partly from preference, but primarily from process: their home was gone, retaken by the Soviets, and they had nowhere else to go.

“We had no other country that would take us,” Romanoff said. “We couldn’t get into England – some people did, I don’t know why we didn’t – they were not willing to take us to America, so we festered in the DP camps from ‘44 until ‘52.”

The political mood in the United States had shifted following the war, its fears of former adversaries now turned to an uneasy suspicion of the Soviets and the refugees they had displaced. It was a period of careful vetting, one where every immigrant needed more than a name and a passport to enter the country: They needed an endorsement, and they needed Krymov. So in 1950, Krymov wrote them his endorsement, absconding them of the veritable crime of any associations with communism and, in 1952, Vicky and her mother boarded the S.S. Eisenhower to begin their new life in Manhattan, light on baggage and cash.

Their first home in America, in Manhattan, was of the illicit sort, their first days spent living illegally in the basement of the Russian Chapel on Elizabeth Street beneath

the Bowery, sleeping on cots covered only by thin blankets purchased by the Church World Service, an organization founded in 1948 to help place refugees of the war. That wouldn’t do, it turns out and, in Tatiana’s typical fashion, she vocally demanded better accommodations for her and her daughter: And so, for two glorious weeks, they eventually found themselves housed in the greatest hotel in New York City: The Chelsea, young Vicky finding herself sharing an elevator with the likes of playwright Arthur Miller and the quirky souls consequently attracted by the hotel’s palatial hallways and glaring reputation. The duo later ended up in the Madison Avenue Baptist Church.

Tatiana’s time in New York wasn’t a stable period, fired from just about every job she held. One job, she held on Wall Street, another she held working as a secretary: fluent in as many languages as she was, English – it seemed – was her weakness. With no permanent address, no home phone number and a mother too busy to keep tabs on her, Vicky had free run of the city: she remembers one episode where, looking for George Washington High School from the subway line on Sixth Avenue, she accidentally ended up on the line headed for Far Rockaway Beach, which she rode all the way to the end.

“I grew up more or less on my own,” Romanoff said. “My mother was always somewhere else. She would often leave me with a boyfriend – thank god they were all nice guys – and left me with another couple for a year; lots of adventures, very odd people. I had to keep my own perspective as to what I wanted, otherwise I would’ve been all over the place.”

After skipping school several times, she figured she’d better learn something so, in a truly remarkable pursuit of knowledge, she began to spend time in the Bowery – still rife with empty storefronts and depleted men – at a Photoplay movie theater located above the L Line, a place known as a haven for bums to sober up after a long night of drinking.

There, she would take her lunch money – 25 cents – put it down, and watch four black and white movies, learning the language of the silver screen: the likes of Ginger Rogers, Cary Grant and Jimmy Durante became her English teachers, the lessons she chronicled in her short story, “My Black And White Family.”

“And my mother looks at me one day and says, ‘Vicky, your English is so much better,’” Romanoff says, “‘but you sound just like Betty Davis.’”

new life in America. Tatiana got her start in her first job that stuck: a nurse’s aide at Good Samaritan Hospital. Vicky took the bus to the school every day, in nearby Nyack. Her first day of school, she remembers being mocked for her lunch of black bread, lard, red onion and salt, a start that, she said, signified her inability to acclimate to her adopted culture.

“I was the opposite of apple pie, as far as being American,” she said.

They maintained that level for a while, that is, until the pair was booted from the farm; Tatiana got in an argument with Tolstoy herself over politics and socialism, Vicky’s mother believing that the revolution did have something to offer as an idea, which

Tolstoy had not.

Little by little, Tatiana’s skills begun to gain recognition. As fear of the Soviets mounted, the paranoia that once threatened her place in the country landed her a job as executive secretary of the International Institute in Providence, Rhode Island, which she held for five years. That experience, as well as her proficiency in the Russian language, eventually gets her jobs teaching Russian in the universities, starting at Indiana University in Bloomington before eventually making her way onto the faculty, once again, in Providence; landing a faculty position at Brown.

art school, accepting a full scholarship to the Rhode Island School of Design and eventually, Cornell.

the art school elite – penned a critical article on her radical lifestyle. This piece kickstarted her mother’s writing career, one which would include more than 40 articles on travel and cultural criticism in “The New Word,” a newspaper for the Russian diaspora, published in New York and Paris.

Krymov died in 1968 and, 11 years later, Tatiana followed. Beyond her memory and inheritance, she left behind two or three boxes of paper she would drag around everywhere they went, including to her deathbed in Florida; not too far from the American St. Petersburg. For years they sat, taped up until one day, Vicky opened the box to find it filled with photos and her uncle’s old writings, typewritten on an old typewriter and therefore impossible to read. It was then, with such an unclear picture of her family narrative and so much a mystery, she made it a goal just to find out who was who, what they did, and what they were about. And so she started to dig.

Her travels brought her back to Riga and St. Petersburg, to Paris and Germany, an effort to compile and understanding of her parents through the places they lived in: to see it as they saw it. She found, through records, the site where her mother lived on the Neva River in Saint Petersburg: bombed and today, filled in with new construction: one part of the family history lost. But in her travels, she discovered their photographs and their writing: lasting spectres of a disappearing time.

In the Fall, Romanoff presented her findings to the Bakhmeteff Archives at Columbia University, a cache of documents which includes a 1926 photo of Dimitri with his father, Platon Ivanov (an official in the Russian Imperial administration of Finland), Dimitri’s nationality papers, gymnasium grades, and a folder of his typed and manuscript writings; a 1948 photo of Tatiana as well as a file of Tatiana’s many articles and a 2011 biographical sketch written by Romanoff of that 1965 visit to the French villa that kickstarted her mother’s writing career. It was a rich collection of materials, shards of a family history that, by odd chance, has been allowed to persist and flourish.

Victoria Romanoff’s story is one lived out by many of those who lived in Latvia during that tumultuous time. By most accounts, approximately 40 percent of its population was displaced by the war. Some were killed, some moved away, some were shipped to Siberia, never to be seen again and their voices, lost to eternity: an obscurity far worse than an odd mention on Russian literary sites. But Romanoff lived, and so will their story.

But what if things hadn’t fallen into place?

How close had they come?

“I don’t know how things would have ended,” she trails off. “Yeah, I don’t know.” •

Ready To Take Off At Last

I

had not yet been to an Ithaca High boy’s basketball game this season, but I went to the game on Friday, and I saw an exciting and well-played contest.

The Tigers of Union-Endicott came to town, and despite the frigid temps, the Little Red drew a large and enthusiastic crowd. I sat across the gym from the team’s bench, and I will tell you that I had a real wave of nostalgia sweep over me when I saw Brian Stone tell the referee in no uncertain terms that he disagreed with a call.

It doesn’t seem that long ago that I sat in the same gym and watched John Stone – Brian’s dad – convey his opinion in a similar manner, but it was indeed a few years ago. Brian played for the Little Red back then (in the 1980’s) and things were different. For one thing, the players’ shorts were a lot shorter, and while they were an athletic bunch back then, I don’t recall seeing a lot of dunks. Perhaps it is just a function of age, but it also seems that the game is played at a much faster pace, and it seemed that the hosts came out at full speed and never slowed down.

The Little Red jumped out in front early, and the Tigers never seemed able to shift into the next gear and catch up. At one point, the gym was reverberating with noise as Ithaca ran their lead up to 24 points, and Stone, like any sensible coach that knows his younger players need floor time, rotated several non-starters into the game. U-E made a comeback of sorts, drawing to within about a dozen points, but Stone’s adjustments and the host’s procession of fresh legs soon made the game a blowout once again.

It would end at 74-57, and Ithaca would run its record to 8-1. The next day, the Little Red went north to Syracuse where they would play against Syracuse Academy, a charter school featuring two very skilled players. After falling behind 16-2 to open the game, Ithaca would fight back to win in double overtime, leaving the home crowd in a state of disbelief. At the

Friday game, I sat with a guy named Richard, and he later told me, “My grandson is on the team and I have been watching these kids for several years. They have come up through AAU and Modified, and coaches like Ricky Milton, Dan Miller and John McNally have done a great job.” Grandpa Richard added, “They play really well together, and they’re a group of unselfish athletes. The bench is very deep, and they can wear out their opponents with their substitutions.” I was impressed with their teamwork as well, and their upperclassmen leadership has clearly paid off. Senior Jordan Ayers lit up the gym with a pair of breakaway slams, and Jordanny Cuevas-Marte, while only a junior, looked really solid both offensively and defensively. The Little Red has lost but a single game – a 3 point squeaker to Binghamton – and their wins over the Syracuse and Rochester teams are showing them that they have a shot to make a deep playoff run. *** I wrote a few weeks ago that the Ithaca High girl’s swimming and diving team returned to the top of the mountain, reclaiming the top spot in the conference after seeing Horseheads take the title for several years. The Little Red boys have every intention of following suit, and they ran (or swam) their record to 4-0 with a dominating 117-68 win at Vestal.

Ithaca won ten of twelve events, including Jamie Lovette’s shattering of a 30-year pool record in the 500 Free. Lovette had a stellar meet, as he also teamed up with Rob Mangan, Cyrus Browning and Owen Kelly to win the 400 Free Relay and also won the 200 Free. Mangan took first in the 50 and 100 Free Sprints, Browning won the 100 Fly and the 100 Breast, and Tim hector took the 100 backstroke. Mike Blakely-Armitage coaches both the boy’s and girl’s programs, and given he is also a family man and a full-time Youth Bureau guy, I tip my hat to him for wearing so many hats effectively.

Before they’re able to deliver on those pledges t hough, t he school must jump through a few more hoops. The release lists two conditions that the school will be required to meet in order to actually open: to raise $30,000 in order to “cover building expenses and start-up costs,” plus 24 total students enrolled. Specifically; eight in preschool, eight in kindergarten and first grade combined, and eight in second through fifth-grades combined. Presumably, that distribution is aimed at giving the school staying power in future years.

Both goals need to be reached by September 1, or the school’s future will once again be thrown into question. If the thresholds are not met by that date, families will be notified and refunded, and donations will be refunded.

Rob Kotaska, who has been one of the leaders in organizing former ICS parents’ efforts since the school’s May announcement, said the next two weeks will “tell the tale.” After that point, the group may need to reevaluate if they have not hit the halfway point of their financial and enrolment goals.

W hi le get ting to t he point t hat t he doors can open for classes seems burdensome enough by itself, it’s not the end goal.

Kotaska emphasized that he, and the group, want long-term viability for OLF, not just a one year stop-gap experiment. With his and others’ children’s educations in the balance, the stakes are too high.

“We don’t want a one hit wonder, we want a golden oldie,” he said with a smile. “I have no interest in putting my kids through the emotional ringer of closing a school two years in a row.”

The group does have some experience with beating deadlines already: they were operating on a self-imposed deadline of August 1 to hone in on a suitable building space to house the school, their mentality being that if there wasn’t a physical location basically locked in by that point, the chances of pulling something together in time for the school year were nigh impossible.

“We’ve had a lot of challenges that have come our way, but I feel that we’ve overcome so many and been given so many opportunities that I believe we will thrive and we can make this happen,” said Paula Senno, who is serving as de facto spokesperson for the group. “We just need some help from the community.”

Senno a lso said now t hat t hey have announced a location, they will begin venturing out into the community and intensifying their fundraising efforts, something they had specifically refrained from until t he school ’s f uture was on more solid ground, in a manner of speaking.

“We didn’t want to reach out because if we couldn’t find a building, and we didn’t have the money, people generally wouldn’t donate,” she said. “If it was a promise of a school constantly, and there was no physical location, people would tend to not take it seriously. But we finally found a place.”

The group had found several possible buildings beforehand, but the expenses to rehabilitate those locations would have been too much of a financial burden.

Tuition for OLF will be $4,000 annually, or by various payment plans, and the school will offer options for pre-Kindergarten.

While ICS offered some f lexible tuition prices to allow lower-income families to afford the bills, OLF doesn’t have the financial base for a similar program, though it sounds as if it’s something Kotaska might look into if the student body grows.

“There are so many variables here that money coming in for students can’t be one of them,” he said. “It pains me in a lot of ways, but that’s what it has to be given the timeframe. We want it to be achievable, if not affordable.”

The site now finds itself under a new owner after Maguire – in their failed proposal for the site – guaranteed the protection of the gardens, leaving local gardeners wary of a future fight as plans begin to come together for the property.

he typical prep-school experience: homework, classes, close friends, brushes of first love and, undoubtedly, some William Shakespeare thrown in the mix.

But when a play like The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet — a forbidden text — falls into the lap of four school girls, school suddenly has more stakes and dangers.

The Hangar Theatre concludes its summer season with a performance of Shakespeare’s R&J, a play originally written by Joe Calarco (an Ithaca College alumnus and former Drama League Directing Fellow at the Hangar), that this summer is circling back to a familiar stage after hundreds of international performances and Broadway success.

Michael Barakiva, the artistic director of this season at the Hangar Theatre, spoke with the Ithaca Times about the adaptation of Shakespeare’s R&J — including making the switch from an all-male cast to an all-female cast.

Ithaca Times: Can you describe the play?

What’s different about it compared to the original Shakespeare production?

Michael Barakiva: In this adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, four students find the script of the play, and it’s forbidden. Once they

start reading it and enacting it, the play sort of erupts out of their retelling. So although almost all of the text is Shakespeare, it’s still retelling it in a more exciting and contemporary way.

IT: Originally, R&J was a full cast of men, and the Hangar is putting on the show with women. Why was the decision made to cast women instead, especially since historically men acted out and studied Shakespeare?

MB: Firstly, the text has a great history with Ithaca and the Hangar Theatre. It started at the Hangar in 1995 with Joe Calarco when he was a director, and it was performed for the first time at the Wedge of the Hangar Theatre.

It continued to play all over the world: it has the record for the longest run of a production of Romeo and Juliet in the history of New York City. And you can see it was sort of like Dead Poet’s Society meets Romeo and Juliet.

But I decided to cast this with women for a few reasons. First when I looked at the entire season, I was really disappointed in my own gender ratio. Theater is an industry that is kept alive by women: 70 percent of audiences are women, 75 percent of our board is women.

If you walk through our offices or our production department, women are just alive, so it was important to me that throughout the

course of the season, the women-to-men ratio would be at least equal. So there was that, but internally, there is an incredible velocity to this play. Juliet is by far the more level headed of Romeo and Juliet, the Nurse is the comedic drive and Lady Capulet is the main parental figure. It just felt like we needed to look at these female voices in the play and give them a platform.

IT: Especially because back in the days of Shakespeare, that wasn’t being done at all.

MB: Yeah, absolutely. And there was something else I hadn’t thought of. During the audition process, I was amazed by what monologues these actors chose to read. A lot of women who act have a Juliet monologue in their back pocket. But I was amazed by how many women came in to read Romeo, Mercutio — these guy roles. And I would ask them, “Oh, you have a Juliet monologue, right? Why aren’t you reading that?” And they would say something like, “Juliet has a great monologue, but I will never in my life have the chance to read a Romeo monologue.” So I was amazed by how many of them were thrilled about the opportunity of taking this text they would never be allowed to perform and really dive into it. I think, specifically, the women we have are brilliant and they bring a verocity to the language that is going to be absolutely thrilling.

IT: The play was originally written by Joe Calarco, who, as you mentioned, worked closely with the Hangar back in the ’90s. Did you ever work with him in the past on this play, or did you work with him now?

MB: It’s funny: Joe and I had a bunch of friends in common for 20 years. We didn’t really meet until very recently, when he was up doing a master class at Ithaca College.

We reached out to each other, had a cup of coffee and we got along as if we knew each other our whole lives. I told him I was interested in programming this play and he was so happy because of his relationship with the Hangar and Ithaca College. When he wasn’t available to come direct it — which we had initially hoped — we worked enormously to get Melissa Kievman, who was a drama league director the same summer that Joe was, and who has been a friend of his since and saw the inception of the material, so I feel so lucky to Contin u ed on page 16

IT: Originally, Calarco’s play captured the idea of love without gender and love in the purest form. How does this theme carry in the Hangar’s adaptation?

MB: The thing that’s great about this adaptation of the play is that on the one hand, it is 100 percent telling the story of Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, it is very hard for us to imagine today what the danger of them falling in love would be. But because the cast is single gendered, it adds a queer element to the play — without overwhelming the play — that suggests the idea of what that danger is today. A queer kiss today carries the same weight that the Montague-Capulet kiss might have back then.

IT: Why is the Hangar putting on the show now in this season?

MB: This season to me is really thematically connected by the idea of what it means to be an outsider in the society in which you live. Disgraced talked about somebody who had as close to the American dream as he possibly could, but it was all taken away from him because of who he was (for his ethnicity and his religion). A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is literally about somebody in a society which he does not have any legal rights in. Dégagé was about a woman whose dance career ended because of her age, so she was basically cast out of her society and thrown into a new society with different rules. The Foreigner is literally about a foreigner who comes to the South and the shenanigans that ensue because he’s so terrified of meeting people. So what I was thinking when I wanted to do this play was, “How will this fit into the season?” What really struck me was that the Montagues and the Capulets could not be more similar to each other. They live in the same town, they have the same socio-economic status, they’re of the same race. And, in Shakespeare’s text, we have no idea what the feud is.

They’re as similar as they can be to each other, except they’re feuding in the same way the Catholics and the Protestants did, or the way that Jews and Christians and Muslims do in the Middle East. It’s the ultimate

examination of how we can make people who are identical to ourselves the “others.”

IT: That’s true. It’s easy to forget there’s no reason for the feud when you’re caught up in the play.

MB: Isn’t that crazy? I think the point, too, is that nobody remembers. They’ve been feuding so long that everyone’s forgotten why. It explains, too, very well the world that Millennials are inheriting: it is possibly for the first time in hundreds of years a generation that is worse than the previous generation. Melissa finds it very resonant that these children are brought up with this toxicity and this hatred and no reason for it: they inherited this difficult world, and it’s only their deaths that can heal the world.

IT: Shakespeare’s plays can definitely lose their magic after high school, sometimes even during school.

When you can see a Shakespeare play performed well, it can be a much different experience than when it’s just read. What sort of experience can the audience look forward to?

MB: One of the things that feels so exciting to me about this play is that Romeo and Juliet is a play about young people, and in this version of the play, you see the entirety of it acted out by young people. And I’m really excited for high school and college students to come and see themselves on stage, so they can see how vibrant and beautiful and expressive Shakespeare can be. • Shakespeare’s R&J will be running at the Hangar Theatre from Aug. 17 to Sept. 2

A Silly Play, A Silly Country

The Hangar puts on a light-hearted production

I

f you’re boiling over the latest xenophobic White House pronouncement on immigration, check out the Hangar Theatre’s current production of Larry Shue’s The Foreigner. You’re guaranteed an evening’s distraction by this amusing romantic comedy heavily laced with farce, slapstickand just plain goofiness.

The action’s set in a fishing lodge in rural Georgia, and Mississippi-born, Atlanta-based playwright Topher Payne directs with a genuine feel for Southern personalities. Betty Meeks, the elderly proprietor, is as affectionate as she is garrulous. Having seen little of the world, she’s delighted when a British friend, Sgt. Froggy LeSueur, brings a buddy for a few day’s respite: a genuine exotic “foreigner” who speaks no English.

Shue’s improbable plot demands you ask no questions, such as why British military conduct explosives training in the deep South or why the lodge is at risk of being condemned and sold for not having proper pavement. But in the spirit of situation comedy, come along for the ride.

You’re i m mersed f rom t he opening noisy thunderstorm — a downpour sounding suspiciously like Ithaca’s recent flooding (Joshua Maywood sound; Steve TenEyck lighting). TenEyck also provides a massive, homely-detailed lodge set, complete with tall stone fireplace and tilted lampshades.

Enter Froggy with Charlie, a nebbishy fellow Brit, a sci-fi magazine proofreader who’s depressed by his wife’s endless infidelities. (23, to be exact.) He’s shy, colorless and boring — so much so that the first few minutes of his arrival threaten to sink the play. Froggy decides to introduce him as a foreigner unable to communicate, thus relieving him of awkward small talk. Charlie protests, but once the ruse is underway, the action, luckily, can really take off.

Other lodge guests include a whiny, rich debutante, Catherine; her fiancé, David, a do-gooding reverend; and her dim-witted brother Ellard. And the local building inspector, Owen, a sneering yokel, drops by often to make not-so-veiled threats and drink up the “Co-cola.”

If the Southerners all seem cut from a handbook of stock types, they are. But comedy is more about behavior than individuality, and what ensues is irresistibly antic: Charlie’s silence renders him a master listener, and he becomes the confidante of both women and Ellard. Meanwhile, he mutely overhears conversations between David and Owen that reveal the former as sleazy as the latter.

First produced in 1984, The Foreigner has enjoyed regional popularity for years

because of its broad strokes, easy heroes and v illains (hint: t he t y pe wearing hooded sheets), and outright silliness. Less urbane than Hangar audiences have come to expect, perhaps, but who can resist a good belly laugh?

In the 2004 New York revival, Charlie was played by a nerdy Matthew Broderick. But Ithaca’s production opts for an Asian-American, reinforcing Charlie’s “difference.” In a neat brush cut and bow tie, Linden Tailor plays him at first bland beyond belief, lost without purpose or personality, unable to finish his own sentences. But once he assumes the fascination of The Other, he invests every moment with expressive facial responses.

It’s a delightful performance, and when Tailor speaks his “native” tongue (a combination of Slavic-sounding words, mumbojumbo, and phrases from sci-fi films), he’s on fire. Austin Jones’ Froggy has to respond in kind, of course (after all, he created this monster). There’s a splendid culminating entrapment scene where Tailor goes all voodoo, but the best moments are still the small ones — like when he has to suppress a smile at his own nonsense.

Susannah Berryman’s Betty Meeks is effusive, good-hearted and comically simple; she trusts she has a sixth sense and can

“understand” what Charlie means. Their mutual hand signals will set you laughing — one of many moments where the physical and verbal comedy coincide.

Justin Walker is convincing as the sincere, good-works minister; his hypocrisy, gradually exposed, is also effective. Lily Waldron’s complaining Catherine seems just too irritating to bear, but when she starts throwing herself about after learning of her unplanned pregnancy, you give in and enjoy the hamminess. And her growing affection for Charlie is engagingly and subtly played.

In a brilliant turn, Austin Jones doubles as the redneck Owen, in shredded jeans, backwards cap and greasy long hair, with elfin ears and twisted features — a baddie to cherish.

Cam Wenrich makes a perfect Ellard — long-legged, endlessly gawky in his bermuda shorts and high socks (kudos to Dixon Reynold’s apt costume design).

He literally lights up, inspired by Charlie’s encouragement to teach him English and help solve problems. By active, sympathetic listening, Charlie renders others more fully themselves — and in turn his own absent selfhood materializes.

That’s the tolerant message of this entertaining play, which should keep you afloat till the next presidential tweet. • Barbara Adams, a regional arts journalist, teaches writing at Ithaca College.

erby Thompson’s production of Agatha Christie’s Appointment With Death at CRT is a real magical mystery tour. I always think of the murder mystery genre as being more enclosed and claustrophobic, but Christie’s play, adapted from her own novel, gives us two entirely different sets to play out her particular brand of thriller, and possibly a more surprising twist than expected.

Scenic designer Shelley Barrish gets to build two unique spaces here. Act One begins in 1936 in Jerusalem at the terrace and lounge of the King Solomon Hotel.

Replete with a lovely effect suggesting a working elevator, the lounge is where we meet several suspicious characters (CRT should put ballots in the program to let the audience bet on the identity of the murderer).

There’s the manipulative Mrs. Boynton (Elizabeth Bove). Sickly but still domineering, Boynton was a prison wardress and now manipulates her children as if they were unwitting marionettes: Lennox Boynton (Grant Paylor) is married to Nadine (Claire Sorlie), who still has feelings for handsome Jefferson Cope (Tom DeMichele). Then there’s Raymond Boynton (Aaron Jacobs), who would like to have feelings for the fetching Dr. Sarah King (Sara Fetgatter), but is cruelly twisted this way and that by Mother Boynton.

Then there’s young Ginevra Boynton (McKena Silva, playing every moment in childish spasms of madness) who worries that her family is trying to poison her, not to mention the Frenchman Dr. Gerard (Dale Young), who has a hypodermic needle and a medicine bag stocked with drugs. And lest we forget, there’s the snooty Lady Westholme (Jeremy Parker), the fusty Alderman Higgs, played by Charles Baran and the prim, judgmental Miss Pryce (Caiti Marlowe).

In just a little over half an hour, Act One establishes these folks, their relation to one another and then proposes an excursion for the whole party. Act Two picks up after intermission at Barrish’s other main location, the Traveler’s Camp at Petra. Barrish completely changes the mood from interior elegance to a beach effect, with convincing surrounding cliff walls, an upstage cliff and a large tent stage left. It is here that one of the traveling

party drops dead, and as you might expect, there are large and basic questions about who the killer might be.

Enter Nathaniel Kent as Colonel Carberry, determined to find the culprit.

sea, and the different laws and pieces of red tape that can help and also hamper any ongoing investigation. That the sickening guilt that accumulates among the suspects plays out on Barrish’s idyllic beach setting offers another type of subtle tension. At pivotal moments, we hear faint musical accompaniment over the sound system; it might be too soft to be as effective as it’s intended to be.

And I wish I could reveal details of what I said to a friend as we exited the theater, but like the name of CRT’s trademark show cookie, such matters should be left to surprise. • Performances will run from Aug. 2-12 with evening show times at 7:30 p.m. Matinees are available on Aug. 4, 8 and 9 at 2 p.m.

New Regal films cater to different audiences

T

he way I remember it is like this: I had seen Brian DePalma’s Carrie, but I didn’t make the connection to Stephen King until, confused by a Stanley Kubrick movie, I spent the summer of 1980 working at Chuck E. Cheese in California and reading a novel called The Shining.

After that, I read everything by King that I could get my hands on: in 1986 alone, he published four novels, and I couldn’t read ‘em fast enough.

Everything, that is, except for King’s Dark Tower fantasy series. It was just a couple of books when I tried to read the first Dark Tower novel sometime in the mid-’90s. Now the series has grown to eight books spanning 4,500 pages. For some reason, I couldn’t get past the first 50 pages, and tried to crack that first novel nearly a dozen times, always conking out somewhere around page 50.

With the Dark Tower movie finally coming this summer after several false starts with J. J. Abrams and Ron Howard — and Act One of ISC’s Much Ado About Nothing in the can, leaving me without much to do – I resolved to read at least the first book by the time the film opened last week and, sitting in a folding chair backstage at Treman Marina, I finally read The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger in time for the flick’s arrival.

I didn’t hate The Dark Tower, but given that it spans events in more than one of the books and still clocks in at 96 minutes, I can understand why fans who have taken in the entire cycle are probably furious. Not that much happens in the first book — it’s mostly epic flashbacks told in a kind of epic drifting quality — but a simplistic plot has been grafted onto King’s title, involving the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), Roland the Gunslinger (Idris Elba) and a teenager with “the shining” (Tom Taylor).

Something epic now feels like something generic.

Arcel directs with a hurried professionalism, skimming over so many elements of story as if to admit that this may be the only Dark Tower movie we get. And since the Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter books got a movie per book, I can also understand why the Tower-heads out there are furious that Arcel’s film (for now) is all there is. *** Atomic Blonde has been compared to the John Wick movies, but I cared a lot more about Charlize Theron’s comic-book spy a lot more than I cared about Keanu

David Leitch’s feature debut only has to go back to 1989 to establish a new benchmark in retro cool. Told to Toby Jones and John Goodman by Theron in flashback, the story unfolds set to a constant Europop-New

Wave beat as Theron’s enigmatic operative has to find a list of double agents who are being smuggled into the West, on the eve of the collapse of the Berlin Wall.

Theron does a great job making a fairly despicable job look like something cool to pass the time. There’s an extended and brutal fight sequence set in a stairwell that looks to have been shot in one unbroken take, and it’s some of the best work of its kind that I’ve seen since the first season of Daredevil on Netflix. The casting is great, particularly James McAvoy as a cocky doppelganger to Theron’s character. In addition to Theron and McAvoy, the film’s supporting cast includes Jones, Goodman, Til Schweiger, Eddie Marsan and Sofia Boutella — a great rogue’s gallery for a

Outwardly prim and proper, this comfort house has been part of the local landscape for nearly a century. Its clientele includes businessmen, politicians and good old college boys, so Sherif f Ed Ea rl Dodd, like the custodians of the peace before him, tolerates the illicit business as long as all’s quiet and peaceable.

Nothing Loose About This One R2P’s August Production More Than A Summer Play

hirling, foot stomping, high energy dancing take the stage in Running to Places’ (R2P) production of “Footloose,” the musical based on the 1984 movie. The young cast’s enthusiasm spilled over during a recent rehearsal of the title song, with so much action on stage and so much infectious enthusiasm the room could barely contain it.

“Fun” describes this show to a T, but the production is more than just a fluffy summer show; it offers a beautiful narrative arc and real substance. The story: culture shock hits when teenager Ren McCormack (Christian Henry) moves to small-town Bomont where dancing – his “thing” – has been declared illegal by the town’s repressive pastor, Rev. Moore (Elijah Speight). Ren’s new friend Willard (Jasper Fearon) cautions him against any fancy moves, but Ren’s just gotta dance.

Meanwhile, romance blossoms between Ren and Moore’s daughter Ariel (Erin Hilgartner) and Willard and Rusty (Addy Whitener), all of whom get pulled in when Ren’s passion for dance leads to open rebellion.

“Any teenager can relate to trying to find your place in the world, of trying to find independence while staying true to yourself and your family,” says Hilgartner.

She describes the show as a portrayal of “the classic struggle between older and younger generations, between traditional values and modern philosophies.”

With the show’s tension arising from a refusal in the town to understand Ren’s difference, Henry says t he show ha s a special relevance in today’s political climate. “It’s a good story to teach people that we all have to learn to compromise and

communicate, not to be stuck in our own ways but to talk about our differences and grow together rather than grow separately with such a gap,” says Henry. “Ren works to find the compromise. He’s the voice that changes the world rather than just stepping back and accepting the oppression. It’s quite amazing what Ren does throughout the show, completely changing the perception of a whole town.”

The chemistry between Hilgartner and Henry lends believability to the story line.

The two have a long history in R2P; this is their third show this season playing opposite one another. “There’s a level of trust and camaraderie that is palpable and would ordinarily take most of the rehearsal process to develop, but these two really know each other,” says R2P artistic director Joey Steinhagen. “One will take a leap and the other will catch them. They play together in a way that’s extraordinary.”

The secondary plot provides the show’s humor, with sidekicks Fearon and Whitener bringing some serious singing ability to their roles. Audience members might recognize Whitener from Merry-Go-Round’s recent production of “Parade.” Many others in the cast have also been in professional theatre productions: “it’s an all-star cast,” says Steinhagen.

With dancing so central to the show, it’s a good thing R2P has Tucker Davis on board. His inspired choreography makes the dancing pop and feels fresh and different for each number. Davis and co-choreographer Fatima Sowe demand a lot of these kids, but they manage to deliver in number after number.

Resident costume designer Liz Woods calls the costuming “a fun little trip down nostalgia lane.” For the ‘80s flashback, she’s pulled things from her own closet as well as from parents of the cast and from costume storage, “some of which have been sleeping for 30 years.” Audience members beyond a certain age will feel right at home.

The music, too, will be a walk down memory lane for anyone who was awake in the ‘80s. “It will be all your favorite radio hits with amazing rock harmonies,” says resident music director Jeremy Pletter. The cast belts out the songs with an in-your-face passion that pumps up the energy of the show.

That cast is a diverse one, including socioeconomically, made possible by R2P’s free tuition. Their annual crowdfunding campaign has raised $10,779 at the time of this writing; Steinhagen says donations are welcome (and incentives available) even after the campaign officially ends (go to bit.ly/jazzhands2017 to give). •

Beauty and the Beast Storyellers: Martha Hamilton and Mitch Weiss are a husband-and-wife duo that have been telling stories together since 1980. When Hamilton became a librarian and when Weiss met Martha at a storytelling group, the two became enamored with both story telling, each other and storytelling together. Since then, they have traveled all over the country and the world telling stories, traveling as far as Japan and Budapest. They will have both CDs and books available at the Artist Market.

Maureen Jakubson: Straying a bit from the canvas, Jakubson creates artwork on fabrics. She crafts all of her pieces using traditional dyeing techniques combined with hand painting — traditional forms of art on non-traditional media. Most of her work focuses on color and texture through shibori techniques on silk, which is a Japanese dyeing technique involving bunching, twisting and folding cloth. She also has pieces in other types of fabric, including quilts.

Lisa M. Narloch: Narloch is the owner, designer and founder of Wood Owl Original Designs. Her work is described as “rescued wood art” because she works primarily with locally found and reclaimed wood. The means at which she finds her pieces varies (sometimes they’re from a wood chipper, other times they can be gifts from friends), but her decision to hand restore, cut and shape the wood remains consistent throughout her pieces. The wood tells the story for each of her creations — she just helps it along the way and breathes elegant life back into it.

Teresa Yatsko: Yatsko creates what are called “altered books.” Her works were previously on display at the Tompkins County Public Library, and they capture the other stories that books tell: personal ones. Each book owner has different memories and associations with the same book: someone may appreciate a classic novel because a teacher they
