I

t is no secret that accessible childcare, for immigrants, refugees and other undergroups seeking a foundation, really isn’t that accessible.

But Ithaca Welcomes Refugees (IWR), along with the local chapter of the Boards of Cooperative Educational Services of New York State (BOCES), wants to change that, starting a childcare center that, on Sept. 6, will look after kids of immigrant and refugee families from the ages of 18 months to five years old.

The cost of childcare will go off of a sliding-scale cost system, which means that the cost of the childcare is based on the parent’s ability to pay.

“There’s just not a lot for preschool type options, for kids under three especially, and we wanted to provide the widest range we could,” Bronwyn Losey, IWR board member and Global Roots director, said.

The childcare center came as a reaction to people asking both people at BOCES in Ithaca and IWR members about a gap in childcare options for them, one that has prevented immigrant parents to attend their english as a second language classes for lack of someone to take care of their kids.

“BOCES says that in us [IWR], they saw an organization that was mobilized and was willing to give them support, and that they were willing to support too,” Losley said.

Julie Petrie, Interim Board Chair at IWR, added that both BOCES and IWR were running into the same problem: students were not going to ESL, and kids were falling behind in their english.

“They had reached out to Ithaca Welcomes Refugees and they wanted some sort of partnership to do something right next to the BOCES classrooms,” explained Petrie. “It worked out for us because Losey has a background in childhood education and we wanted to do something similar was well.”

The Commons: Beautiful Flowers And... Kale?

M

artha Gioumousis, the Community Beautification Program Manager for Cornell Cooperative Extension, has a smart sense of humor.

Responsible for CCE’s extensive downtown network of planters permanent and movable, Gioumousis takes a great pride walking down the Commons, naming every unique floral and plant array in each of the Commons’ 78 planters. There are marigolds and petunias, pansies

left over from the spring, ornamental grasses and eye-popping patches of zinnias. Stopping in front of one of the planters, she cracks a smile.

“This one is kind of my little joke,” she grins, pointing to a kale plant poking out of the flowerbed. “It’s kind of funny here in ‘will work for kale Ithaca.’”

In the treacherous stretch of concrete at the base of East State Street, a small, tranquil triangle wedged between two humming thoroughfares buzzes with life as honey bees f lit from f lower to f lower and volunteers from the Beautification Brigade – the team of volunteer gardeners Gioumousis oversees – bend over the soil, hard at work. This is the group that, starting every April since 2002, has been responsible for planting and maintaining the flowers and shrubs that keep the parks, sidewalks and intersections of Ithaca full of life and

color. They choose bold colors – oranges and yellows – over purples and whites, situating each group of plants according to location: shaded triangles get different themes and species than others. The Aurora Triangle, just off the Commons has yellow Marigolds, purple Salvia and Nepeta; the State Triangle, just down the way, a mix of Zinnias, sunflowers and various types of shrubbery. For 15 years, their mission was purely aesthetic and for the most part, still is. But this year, they decided to do something a little different.

In the summer of 2016 the kale was, for the most part, an edible joke. However, there was a teachable moment sort of inherent in the joke: people could pluck a leaf from this garden continued on page 5

IT: You’ve worked in a variety of markets and positions, but how do you fit into the head job at INHS? The beautiful part about this is that I’ve done real estate development and I’ve done housing education and housing counseling piece and I’ve done residential lending, so when there’s a chance for me to combine all of these things into one organization is such a great feeling. INHS is doing wonderful and unique things, incredibly innovative things, they’re all lines that I

ohanna Anderson – the newest Executive Director of Ithaca Neighborhood Housing Services – has been all over, from her birth in Minnesota and growing up in Colorado, to working in different development organizations in Minnesota, just outside of Washington, D.C., Maine and Syracuse.

Her career to this point has taken her through each of the three main sectors of affordable housing development work, including financial education, rental counseling, and residential and consumer lending. She first dabbled in the affordable housing side of things in Denver, then when she moved back to Minnesota she began working with immigrant and refugee families and going on to helping Native American tribes in Maine at a Community Development Financial Institution.

Her career has now brought her to Ithaca, where she will be the first new face at the helm of INHS in more than two decades.

The Ithaca Times caught up with her to ask about the new job.

T h e i d e a s pr ou t e d b a c k between April and May, and it was as simple question of whether IWR would be able to take care of some amount of kids, for some amount of time in some space.

“It was broad, and we had to narrow it down quickly,” Losely said.

feel like I have a level of comfort with, which is very nice.

IT: You started your job with Home Headquarters, Inc., in Syracuse in April. That’s a pretty quick turnaround to leave a job, what made this position so attractive?

I went down to Ithaca in May of 2016, I had always heard about INHS through my work, it’s a pretty well-known organization and very well-respected.

I travelled down to Ithaca to meet with the NYS Community Development Financial Institution Coalition director – she was working out of Ithaca – and that was my first time down there.

And we had lunch and walked around the Commons. There’s a vibrancy to that town, and I remember leaving there and calling my husband and saying “Oh my gosh, we need to get to Ithaca, we have to figure out a way to get down here.” It’s just an amazing town, it’s beautiful, the environment is gorgeous, people are so friendly. It was an amazing feeling. It was active, it was inspiring. And earlier this summer I saw that Paul was retiring and I thought it was a once-in-alifetime opportunity. I had to try.

And it worked out really well.

I’m so grateful for this opportunity, I’m so impressed the more I have learned about the organization and meeting the Board and seeing their leadership and dedication and meeting the staff and being able to feel their energy and passion.

It’s really encouraging others, being supportive. I believe in pushing and rewarding my staff, when it comes to the work that we do in community development, it’s really hard work and challenging, and making sure that you know that you’re supported and that you have someone that wants to see you succeed, it really goes a long way and makes a huge difference.

IT: Your previous jobs are in this same vein. Did you bring a certain philosophy to those jobs

IT: In terms of replacing Paul Mazzarella, are there certain aspects of his tenure that you are specifically interested in continuing?

Paul is a true pillar in that community and I say that it’s

Losley and Petrie added that there is an enrollment priority for immigrant and refugee families and those who are going to ESL classes and kids who need ESL preparation, but the program will be open to those in the broader Ithaca community as well.

“We’re going to be play-based, so really following the children’s needs as they play…so they can start exploring their world and start to feel safe outside of the family,” Losley explained. There will be a common language of English – not specifically english classes – but the constant expo-

sure to the language that will make it easier for the kids to be able to learn.

Since the childcare is only two blocks away from BOCES – where parents and adults usually go for ESL classes – and the Tompkins Learning Center – where english tutoring happens – it is an easy way for parents to be able to attend classes while leaving their kids in childcare.

The proximity of all three centers also makes it easy for immigrant and refugee families who have to come from further out of central Ithaca to come into the city to take their ESL classes

We’ll be able to honor his legacy and moving along the path that he has worked for. He has been the voice and heart of the organization for 26 years, and I can’t imagine that it would be a good idea to change too much of what he was doing, because he’s just been wonderful.

because it means that their kids will be close and they can all come and go together. It is a safer and more convenient option than leaving their kids at home or not being able to come to lessons at all.

“We’re hoping that we can eventually expand, if the need is great enough we can expand with as second classroom, but we have to see how it goes,” said Losley.

“We definitely need to attract and continue to attract people who need these resources.”

Developer Meets Over Controversial South Hill Property

Of the seven groups in attendance, only two – the jail staff a nd OA R – reque sted tot a l funding increases of less than $100,000 which, like for all but one of the proposals, were recommendations for improved staffing.

The largest appropriation requested was by District Attorney Matthew Van Houten, who requested a funding increase of $195,000 per year to fund the creation of two additional assis-

on the Commons and, if they chose to do so, eat it. The thought was, by offering free kale, the Beautification Brigade could offer a teaching moment through people’s stomachs; that urban horticulture could be viable and delicious.

Except they didn’t promote it and the idea never caught on. So this year, the group decided to put their land to use as a source of greens for the local Loaves and Fishes.

With limited space to work with (and their funding coming from the hotel tax, which is meant to fund various tourism applications) the idea of donated food being farmed and cultivated on the city’s sidewalks and planters is still a long way off: the plantings need to be aesthetically pleasing, after all, and the volume of their harvest needed to make the planting program a real pillar for local kitchens seems somewhat unsustainable at best: so far, the only edibles to make the cut have been ornamental squash in their garden by Purity Ice Cream and some winter squash, planted late in the season. But the program has potential and, recognizing their role in the community, the Beautification Brigade is making strides to up their ambitions. Just last month, they cut the ribbon on the Esty Street Community Garden, a partnership CCE had forged along with Greenstar and CFCU to bring even more freshly grown vegetables to Loaves and Fishes.

They are currently working on a new sponsorship program, to allow even more businesses to sponsor their plantings (at a special fee of course) in different areas of the city, giving the group more funding to try new things.

They’ve found their first takers already, working with NYSEG on a new planting by Island Health And Fitness, and hope that down the road they will be able to take on more ambitious projects and teach more people the finer points of urban horticulture, like they’ve done for numerous student groups coming down from Cornell looking for service hours.

Until then, Gioumousis is just reveling in the freedom of doing what she loves.

“But other than that, I can pretty much do whatever I want.”

f ter dominat ing last we e k ’s Pl a n n i ng a nd Economic Development Committee meeting, South Hill residents and an area developer gathered once again at City Hall last week to negotiate a resolution.

Some of t he teet h were taken out of the debate early: Modern Living Rentals’ Charlie O’Connor, who purchased the property, announced at the meeting that the community’s feedback had persuaded him to change his plan for the property-- instead of aiming for students, he said he is now going to market the property’s new duplex to “families and professionals,” though South Hill residents had mainly raised the concern last meeting that the student population in the neighborhood has gotten out of hand, and another property with more construction (for another dwelling) would invite more students.

“With everything I’ve heard from the community, I decided it would be best to not put any more students there,” O’Connor said.

W h i le he d id com m it to avoiding students at the new duplex, he said he has not yet made that type of decision about the current house that sits on the property at 217 Columbia Street,

leaving neighbors’ concerns partially answered but not totally allayed.

As for keeping just the single dwelling on the property, and forgetting the second house altogether, as was argued throughout t he meet i ng? O’Connor asserted the price he paid for the land demanded another rental structure to make it financially worthwhile.

O’Connor made an opening statement that highlighted one of the points he has tried to push throughout this process: he cares about the community, something he is trying to show

Re-Entry Programs Could Cost $646k

M

embers of the Tompk i ns C ou nt y Publ ic Safety and Jail Study Committees met in consecutive sessions Thursday afternoon to hear the potential costs of several initiatives to streamline the criminal justice system, improve reentry and reduce recidivism r ate s w it h i n t he Tompk i n s County Jail.

In a series of presentations reminiscent of those experienced during the upcoming marathon budget sessions of the fall, Tompkins County legislators met with representatives from the Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office, the District Attorney, the Tompkins County Department of Mental Health and the reentry nonprofit Opportunities, Alternatives and Resources of Tompkins County (OAR) to consider a number of proposed budget items put forth

to meet recommendations produced by research firm CGR in its evaluations of the Tompkins County Jail population.

The total cost of $781,500 for these eight proposed items is still preliminary and could end up being lower than proposed when they come to a vote in November.

Of that amount, $646,700 would be funded on a recurring basis and would go against the tax levy while three additional proposals would amount to a one-time expenditure of $135,000 from the county’s reserve funding.

Last year’s budget amounted to approximately $171 million.

While a plan has already been submitted to the state based on CGR’s recommendations and numerous committee meetings over the past several months, Jail Study Committee Chair Rich John said Thursday’s sessions

Otherwise, he would simply go to the Planning Board, jump through whatever hoops they presented to get approved, and be on his way.

The developer also said the discussion has become tainted by people who support more housing in Ithaca in general but only when it doesn’t directly affect them (Not In My Backyard-ism, or NIMBYism as it is continued on page 12

The Fixers

ust before 3:00 o’clock on a sunny Saturday the makings of party are observed: A few folks arrive and start rearranging odd pieces of furniture—a scuffed up table, some mismatched chairs, an aged metal cabinet is wheeled out, an unopened box of Thin Mint Girl Scout cookies are opened. While Bruce, Lennie, Roger, Sarah, Susanna do not consult with each other, they all appear pleased, expectant, engaged in their preparations.

Right at the stroke of three, a wannabe Fixer arrives at the Finger Lakes ReUse Center on Elmira Road. She brings her basket w it h t wo much loved watches, a pack of unopened batteries, and a watch repair tool kit with many mysterious tools held neatly in a zippered case. Lennie Rosentiel moseys over. After many years behind the scenes – fixing, creating, maintaining order at Wilcox Press – Lennie is a heavy hitter at the Fixers’ Collective, which assembles every Saturday in a spacious bright section of the downtown ReUse Center. (The sister ReUse Center is on Triphammer Road.)

Bruce Johnson, the master of ceremonies, runs interference while Lennie reaches into his gym bag and pulls out a much used, but still hifi, meter reader. Lennie pronounces the soon to be inserted watch battery “good,” but after careful yet swift battery insertion, he pronounces the watch crystal “bad.” Nonetheless, with command, he opens the customer’s

watch maker’s’ toolkit and pulls out a tiny crowbar. He pops off the leather watchband, showing the “customer” how that is done, and puts the good battery in her second watch, which will be her mainstay for now. Before he moves on to the next Fixers’ project, he advises the enchanted first-timer that she can email Timex and inquire re their reworking the crystal, if her old Timex means that much to her. And it does.

As t he Girl Scout cook ies a re passed around with the delicacy of High Tea, Roger – the headmaster of the second long, battered table – cannot be tempted. He holds up his current objet d’art: A tiny carved miniature comprised of many birds on a central branch.

Some of the quarter inch wooden birds must be repaired and replaced. Bruce and Roger chat about “special glue” Lennie has brought along to test.

While Roger cheerfully secures the birds, he also advises a small group who come and perch near him with pieces of wood they are refinishing for their own projects: “My goal is to refinish and resell enough discarded merchandise to earn the ReUse Center $20,000 so that the ReUse Center’s visionary work can be carried far and wide,” he says. “I came of age in the ‘60s and I practice the principles of the Center: Reduce (what you use); Reuse contin u ed on page 7

A

round noon on September 13, 1862, in a meadow outside of Frederick, Maryland which had recently served as the site of a Confederate camp, Corporal Barton Mitchell of the Federal (Union) Army found a piece of paper wrapped around three cigars. The document was entitled “Special Order No. 191, Headquarters, Army of Northern Virginia,” and it contained the battle plans and the disposition of the Confederate Army immediately before the Battle of Antietam.

I tell that story because the following document was found (also, perversely, wrapped around three cigars) by senior presidential advisor Jared Kushner this past weekend, just outside the main entrance to the 8th Avenue headquarters of the New York Times in New York City. Pretty explosive stuff, though no surprise, I’m sure, to our far-sighted head of state. Of course the liberal media won’t report it, but the Ithaca Times has bravely chosen to print it in full…

and continues to experience many kinds of struggles, violence, trauma, poverty, and other injustices by society, I felt ready to work with and alongside folks that, like me, understand that their liberation is tied to mine and mine to theirs. We have brought together people with lived experience and most impacted by systems of oppression to work together and model the needed change in behaviors and practices.

I hear folks asking for change. But, do folks fully understand the amount of time, energy and resources it takes to bring about change and to do it right the first time? Does everyone grasp the first step of investing in authentic relationship-building with folks with lived experienced and

most impacted by systems of oppression, taking the time to listen and get to know one another as unique human beings who bring something valuable and necessary to the table. It requires a special type of leadership style and I invite you to learn with us how such a non-oppressive leadership approach could work in practice.

We don’t need academics to remind us that, if this community does not change its daily business-as-usual patterns of behavior, it will continue to perpetuate the same top-down systems, structures and processes producing the violence we are trying to resist and dismantle. Continuing to support of a top-down style of leadership generates the high levels of distrust that exist in our community, leaving behind, yet again, the people who need to be at the center and forefront of the movements to create change. Let us walk “our talk” together and recognize that, if we support and protect the organizing spaces of those most impacted by systematic oppression, and support different types of leadership, their successes will benefit everyone.

I too hear and see fear. Leaving one’s comfort zone is challenging. Too often, we think from a zero-sum game perspective, believing that stepping back or sharing privilege and resources means that we must give up or lose something ourselves. I do understand the unsettling, scary feelings that come with change. Our culture and system elevates these fears to the forefront of our everyday lives, and make them feel so real and true! But we need to wake up and stop being paralyzed! We need to develop trust, which means working through our own vulnerabilities, so that we stop being imprisoned by them. Don’t fear.

We will be there with you and support you if someone takes advantage of your vulnerability. Our focus is on working together, building a better future for all. Working together will require us to redefine and reconceptualize our roles and responsibilities and how we will become compensated. New collaborative opportunities will appear as traditional “social work” jobs become obsolete. There is enough for each and everyone of us. Don’t doubt that.

An Endorsement For Henry Granison

H

enry Granison is the best choice for District 3 Tompkins County Representative. I have known Henry for over 10 years. He has raised his two daughters in Ithaca and his family returned to Ithaca because of their love for the area.

They all have contributed their talents in church, school and community in a non

self promoting way.

He is the best choice because he has the time and energy to serve and the ability to do so well.. He is not running to push a pet interest that is of personal benefit to him but to push what is best for the community. When discussing policy, he has done the research and has the facts. He also not only listens but takes other’s opinions seriously. Most importantly he has a sense of humor that pairs well with his strong support for issues like living wage, affordable housing and counteracting federal cuts at the local level. He will be able to work with others to get things done.

When Henry Granison is a member of the county legislature I will know that there is someone there who will represent the best interests of everyone in the county.

An Endorsement For Reed Steberger After living in Ithaca and teaching at Tompkins Cortland Community College for the past four years, I have developed an intense love for this area and the people who make it such a wonderful place to live. My first years in Ithaca were spent living in the apartment directly above Reed Steberger. I believe that Reed Steberger’s perspective, intellect, and genuine interest is exactly what Tompkins County District 4 (The Commons, Collegetown and West Campus) should seek out and value as indispensable in a new county legislator.

Reed possesses a strong dedication to matters affecting marginalized groups and social injustices. In recent months I have attended several campaign events, intended to get to know residents and conduct political education. During these gatherings, discussions with Reed were always informative and quite honestly, exciting. But what really left an impression on me is the genuine, humble way that Reed conducts the campaign at large, with a real interest in advocating for all persons regardless of sex, race, SES, religion, etc. Reed is always, very clearly, interested in listening rather than speaking, and in hearing what people have experienced. A deep concern at an individual level, and the ability to engage with people’s lived experiences is essential in a county legislator. I have noticed that the campaign is not simply about championing Reed’s own proficiency in local matters; there is a great interest in learning as well.

What Reed is hoping to accomplish and change is an example of certain magnanimity, and how it is being done is what leaves me excited and moved.

Reed Steberger has surely secured my vote for county legislator of District 4.

CorrecTions You’ve Got The Wrong Guy!

In last week’s Newcomer’s Guide, the author mistakenly credited the poet David Lehman with founding the Lehman Alternative School. That was actually a different David Lehman entirely. If anyone was interested, the poet David Lehman actually lived on Valentine Place before, according to one source, moving onto the New School in New York City. The other, an educator, retired in 2004.

The Fixers spent weeks recreating a stately oversize wooden desk. Under Roger’s tutelage missing desk pieces were recreated. A collective cheer greeted the news that “their desk” had been sold to a happy customer.

Bruce relates that many of his Fixers Collective colleagues wandered in as first-time “customers” had so much fun and learned so much, that when they returned the next Saturday and the next, they transformed into Fixers themselves.

Next up for the Fixers: a thermos jug which was in need of special rubber band (fixed with a clean piece of a vacuum cleaner ring), then a ‘70s portable boom box fixed with Lennie’s Five Minute Express Glue. Liz Huntley arrived with a vacuum cleaner, in need of some work. She and the Fixers whip the older vacuum into shape and is pleased that she will leave her apartment’s vacuum in better shape than she found it.

In the meantime the owner of the vintage Timex watches (with Indiglo to light up the face of the dial in the dark) has given the toolkit to Fixer Susanna who has been examining all the tiny, ingenuous watchmakers’ tools.

As it turns out the heavily battered and much loved file cabinet is the treasure trove of neatly stored tools for every type of repair. Fixers have triumphed with a pneumatic metal pogo stick (which had its own built in pump), two matching silver ‘40s samovar-shaped percolators and many other oddities.

In the cavernous space of the former TST BOCES building on Old Elmira Road (alongside many supportive merchants), the downtown ReUse Center is a local treasure. Much sought after new model computers, furnishings, everything one needs to set up housekeeping, are neatly organized and priced very low.

Judging by the constant f low of Ithacans and out of towners who have heard about two Ithaca’s two ReUse Centers, these centers are wildly popular. Open seven days a week the busy crew picks up what would otherwise be discarded, and delivers purchased items to one’s abode.

As little kids happily wander around fascinated by vintage and hifi toys, home owners snatch up a sunshade for their new window, a tall elegant vase for their budding Forsythias stems. Everyone seemed to find something as folks wandered around. All this went on as backdrop to the Fixers’ Collective.

As the new Fixers’ Collective enthusiast wanders out dazzled by how much has been crammed into a an hour and a half soiree at the Ithaca ReUse Center she passes a young family and an elderly man coming in. Those leaving and those entering are joining the league of people who are reducing, reusing, and recycling while having a blast on a bright Saturday afternoon. Who could could ask for more?

Last week in the Ithaca Times, you may have stumbled across an article in our Newcomer’s Guide describing several “secret spots” throughout the area.

Intended to be a piece to highlight some of the aspects of our community that make us special, the article was intended to be something fun, to stoke curiosity and remind us that there are surprises to be found even in our own backyard.

Out of those locations highlighted, one in particular – Ezra’s Tunnel – has drawn quite a bit of criticism from not only city and Cornell officials, but members of the community as well. The site is notably dangerous and – with the recent death of two Cornell students in that very gorge – more sensitivity could have been had in its publication. In our rationale for the piece, the tunnel itself had been highlighted in a Cornell student blog associated with a Cornell.edu URL. (the site has since been removed.) The piece itself was written well in-advance and largely informed by a step-by-step slideshow presented in City Hall giving a “tour” of the tunnel, onethat was not only presented in a public forum for anyone to hear, but has been submitted as part of the public record and is accessible to anyone.

Nonetheless, the timing of that piece’s publication was in poor taste given the recent context of the tunnel. It is a dangerous place, and to understate the danger of not following the signs in place for your own protection for was a regretable editorial decision. So, for the record, we will say this: We do not advocate trespassing and, while Ezra’s Tunnel could have a lot of potential as a tourist draw and probably, should have been made off-limits long ago, the place is dangerous and the risk of seeing it far outweighs any views you might get.

Admittedly, the bad optics of seeing a mistake in hindsight printed 18,000 times on every newsstand in the city – accompanied with the marked criticism of city and Cornell officials that swiftly followed – has been quite the humbling experience. Hopefully it will be a valuable one as well.

Unbalanced Sheet Are our bottom earners further from the top than ever? Or is it the other way around?

wo weeks ago in New York City, economists from the New York State Federal Reserve Bank briefed members of the national business media on a recent survey of the regional economy outlining wage inequality in the State of New York, Northern New Jersey and – because of its close ties to the New York City metropolitan area – Fairfield, Connecticut.

Outlining a number of changes to the economy – from increased reliance on automation and a globalized workforce to the disappearance of strong unions, a languishing “real value” behind the national minimum wage, and the rise of hyper-consolidated agglomeration economies focused around large cities – the economists outlined a regional economy that, while featuring low levels of unemployment, has grown a widening divide several decades in the making between its highest and lowest earners: a trend that has only gotten worse since its origins in the 1980s.

Using a metric comparing the 90th percentile of earners to the 10th percentile, the economists produced a number – referred to as the 90-10 index – which can be used to evaluate the level of wage inequality within a certain area. For the region, 2015 produced

a 90-10 index of 5.3., a signifier that today’s wage distribution has become much more inequitable than it once was in 1982, when that ratio was somewhere around 4.0.

This is a number which for many cities without the good-paying industries that once supported them – Binghamton, Rochester, Syracuse – has stayed fairly stable despite slow-growing wages at the bottom of the wage distribution, largely thanks to a loss of good-paying jobs to balance out the middle and high salary jobs at the very top.

But other communities, particularly large cities, are much more inequitable than that index of 5.3: the top three metros for inequality being Fairfield (8.0), New York City (7.0) and…

Ithaca, New York, at 6.5.

The reasons why some economies are more unequal, NYSFR economist Jaison Abel said, lie with three primary regional factors: Differences in local demand for workers, agglomeration economies – the efficiency friendly practice of clustering certain industries in cities, leading to higher wages for highly skilled workers – and migration, particularly of skilled workers, to other markets, oftentimes leading to higher levels of wage inequality in larger cities.

in distinct, local labor markets,” Abel said.

“The demand for skilled workers has been particularly strong in some metros, leading to particularly outsized wage gains at the top of the distribution in those places.

Likewise, stifled wage growth has followed a geographic pattern as well affecting wage distribution in those places.”

The news comes at an interesting time for Ithaca: the following week, Alternatives Federal Credit Union released its semi-annual study on the Tompkins County Living Wage; a figure produced every two years which takes cost of living in the county into account in order to accurately gauge what hourly wage is actually needed to get by in Ithaca. In a press conference last Friday hosted by AFCU and the Tompkins County Worker’s Center, it was announced that the 2017 living wage – which takes savings plans, health insurance and other costs of living into account – was $15.11, assuming the recipient did not have a workplacesponsored health insurance plan. (with one, the wage is somewhere in the $13 per hour range.)

Though the median wage in Ithaca is somewhere in the ballpark of $21.23 an hour, the volume of service industry workers in Tompkins County – as well as the inequal-

ity metric itself – lend to activist arguments some people should be making more money even as the area’s employment grows at a significantly faster clip than the rest of the region – it is projected job growth in Tompkins County will rise roughly 1.3 percent growth each year through 2035 largely in the education and health sectors as well as, to some degree, advanced manufacturing. But the raw numbers of jobs signify that some are being left in the dust: according to 2017 figures from the Cornell Program on Applied Demographics, approximately 5,400 households – 14 percent of Tompkins County’s households – make between $15,000 and $30,000 per year in total income – not just wages. (because of the potential for student and contract workers to skew the numbers, those making less than $15,000 – about 6,300 households, according to Cornell’s numbers – are left out here.) For reference, one’s annual salary under a living wage, assuming a 35 hour workweek with no vacation is $27,5000 and, at median wages under the same conditions, $38,600 per year. (For a 40 hour calculation – which is used in the Living Wage Study – that stands at $31,428 per year to $44,150 at median wage).

Yet, despite this, the poverty rate for those between the ages of 35 and 64 – 9.3 percent –

is about two points below the national average, helped in part by the more than 13,000 households in Tompkins County bringing in more than $75,000 per year in total income, according to Cornell.

Some of this gap, anecdotally, may have to do with the changing nature of the jobs at the top of the wage scale as well as traditionally high earnings in education and some areas of healthcare, even as the minimum wage begins to creep upward.

“Anecdotally with the technology park and the founding of REV, high tech has been another area that has gotten a lot of attention here,” said Karl Graham, an outreach coordinator with AFCU. “I think it’s more the high-skilled people are being paid more for their jobs while the service industry workers really hasn’t.”

Even as higher paid jobs are added and the minimum wage is increased, other sectors of the economy mirror a trend noted by the NYSFRB economists: a significant difference in wage growth at different areas of the wage distribution curve, a trend that began sometime in the mid-60s. In 1965, average annual wages in the United States for full time workers at the 90th percentile was $60,000 in today’s wages; today, that has increased to a little more than $100,000 per year. Compare this to the wage growth at the 50th percentile ($30,000 then to about $45,000 now) and the 10th percentile ($15,000 in 1965 to $20,000 today): a signifier that at many levels of the wage distribution, annual increases in wages have been lopsided as compared to others.

“We’ve actually had minimum wage increases here for the last couple of years from New York State,” said Tompkins County Worker’s Center organizer Pete Myers, one of the chief drivers of the living wage campaign. “There’s a hell of a lot of people working minimum wage though.”

“I think it mirrors the society we’re in,” he added, “and – not to be too simplistic – but the divide between the haves and the havenots, we sort of have this history of seeing certain industries as being inherently low wage.”

The real question now is, is the bottom far from the top? Or is it the other way around?

Though the argument in fighting for a living wage now is rooted largely in making up for this lost time, critics of a locally imposed living wage say that economically, we may have dug ourselves in too deep a hole as a society to quickly dig ourselves out.

“There’s no question wages should have gone up proportionate to inflation quicker and earlier than they have,” said Jennifer Tavares, the President and CEO of the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce. “I really believe these policies are best set at the

On a moral ground some, like Deborah Dietrich of Opportunities, Alternatives and Resources of Tompkins County, say that given today’s wage inequality, it is time to seriously discuss considering a more level wage for all employees across an organization.

Both Myers and Tavares are the titular heads of a fairly progressive living wage movement in Tompkins County: though it’s all voluntary, many employers within Tompkins County do pay a living wage. (Some, Tavares notes, actually pay above it). On one side of the issue, Myers stands as the bleeding heart, grounded in the ideals of living wages being “the right thing to do” and citing national examples to prove it. Tavares, meanwhile, works with local studies and insight, plays the role of pragmatic foil: stating some of the consequences rapid wage increases intended to make up for lost time and missed opportunities by previous generations to “do the right thing” can have on employers in Tompkins County.

“On some level, we don’t disagree with that,” Myers said. “But we actually have a number of living wage employers here in the community, so we know it’s not impossible.”

In a way, he has a point: In a recent survey of the Chamber of Commerce’s membership, it was found entry-level wages across the board from chamber respondents are actually quite high commensurate to the living wage. However, when asked, 75 percent of the 60 respondents said that if asked, they would not sign a petition in support of a living wage – citing the overhead incurred by benefits and training costs – despite the fact only 53 percent were opposed to the idea.

There are still plenty of anecdotal arguments for the living wage: namely, loyalty.

At AFCU’s last press conference two years ago, the owner of Jillian’s Drawers – a living wage employer – said that higher wages could incentivize staff to stay on longer, raising productivity and lowering turnover, an argument that poses the argument the more intangible benefits of a living wage are what really make for a payoff and, at this year’s press conference, 45 percent of all employers said a living wage was a factor behind reduced turnover – 66 percent said it improved overall office morale; a side effect of people presumably feeling valued for their work, Graham said.

“That’s a fairly consistent benefit we hear from employers that pay a living wage,” said Graham. “As much as some businesses dread a rise in the minimum wage, others really see the benefit of it.”

To that, Tavares said it should really up to businesses themselves to gauge the potential benefit.

“Most people are paying a living wage already and don’t think this will will impact them,” Tavares said. “I think that’s wonderful.”

ver the years, I have written a handful of columns about the Ithaca Cooperative Softball League, and those columns have been about – no big surprise here – softball.

I have always liked the fact that the teams are co-ed, and they play really hard, and they feature some high-level play, but I do recall that some players were annoyed with me when I peered through my “dad lens” and pointed out that I thought some of t he la ng uage wa s a bit rough sometimes and that drinking during games was a bad idea. (League rules do not allow drinking, but some people did so anyway.) That said, league organizers do a great job in keeping things flowing smoothly, and the league is a real asset to our softball-deprived community.

Given the league’s “family friendly” reputation, I was drawn to a controversy that stirred up quite a bit of attention on social media last week. One of the teams – Empire Mechanical, also known as “The Evil Empire” (self-designated) – decided to test the limits of our society’s sacred Freedom of Expression, and they showed up to play this year with shirts that featured an image of President Trump wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, and shorts emblazoned with an image of the President grabbing a bikiniclad woman where he has stated he likes to grab women.

The league had no uniform regulations per se, but I learned that the Board of Directors told the Evil Empire team that the shorts could not be worn.

I showed up to get some perspective from both sides, and Empire’s Jesse Brady asked me, “Are you here to write about us being discriminated against?” I said “Is that how you guys feel?” Pat Casselberry replied, “Definitely. I contacted my attorney, but he is out of town.” I asked on what basis he reached out for legal advice, and he stated, “Given this is a public organization, overseen by the City of Ithaca, I feel being told what I can and cannot wear is a violation of my citizen’s rights.” His teammate Derek Barr added, “The shorts are a little iffy, but I see no problem with the shirts.” One of the female team members said, “We have been wearing these uniforms all year, and we just wonder ‘Why now?’”

I also spoke with Jeff Goodmark, who is the league’s Co-Commissioner and serves as the liaison between the players and the Board, and Jeff said, “It’s true that there are presently no rules in place regarding uniforms, but the issue officially came to light when a player filed a formal complaint, so the Board of Directors had to get involved.”

Goodmark said “the ‘Why now?’ question is a valid one,” and he went on to explain that “the current political climate” prompted the Board to dictate that any politically-oriented uniforms will be banned and that the Board will meet in February (as they do every year) to implement any new rules for next season and beyond. He added, “The shirts were given the benefit of the doubt, and we as a Board do appreciate the fact that they are not wearing them tonight.” (Monday was the first round of the playoffs.)

I also spoke to a female player (on another team) named Amanda, and she made a statement that, in my opinion, puts a clearer focus on why the Board made its move regarding the shorts. She said, “When I see an image of a man grabbing a woman by the genitals, yes… I see it as inappropriate and immature and offensive, but I also feel threatened by it.” *** I dedicated a recent column to the memory of my friend and softball teammate Thommy Grady, and I have had many people ask me if there would be any memorial gathering. Indeed there will be, and it will be this Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Cass Park softball fields. It is a BYOB event.

O’Connor is balancing keeping the peace with potential neighbors with the fact that he’s already purchased the land, and turning a profit on a valuable piece of property. The neighbors at the meeting seemed suspicious, many noting that if O’Connor ended up selling the property there would be a replay of the current dispute. As it stands, he does still intend to build an additional duplex on the property which, he pointed out, is his right as the property owner.

McGonigal, who represent South Hill and had previously met with O’Connor, were also in attendance. Brock served as a sort of unofficial moderator. She addressed the dueling solutions that were discussed last week at PEDC: either a full zoning change for the area to prevent future situations like this (Brock’s suggestion), or a building moratorium on South Hill while a study is conducted and a neighborhood plan is contemplated. Zoning changes were not a topic, though, as O’Connor’s proposal meets all current zoning requirements.

O’Connor also announced another meeting this upcoming Tuesday, August 22, again to gather more public reaction.

“These are busy courts,” he said.

In second place, the Tompkins County Department of Health which, under a new restructuring of county reentry programs, would become the chief point of contact for inmates once they enter – and leave – the jail. Currently committing three full-time staffers to 21 hours in the jail per week, the department called to replace their workload with two, full-time staffers committed to the jail at a cost of approximately $171,000 – only $90,000 of which will likely come from taxes, County Administrator Joe Mareane said, after some fund source shifting takes place.

Mirroring an FBI-approved program already in place at the Erie County Holding Center, the department plans to request the addition of committed mental health staffers to focus exclusively on re-entry and in-jail services: one to care for the inmate population upon intake and during their time within the jail, and another to focus primarily on re-entry, connecting them to programming within the community directly from when they leave jail. ““Continuity of care is critical here, we want to start this process from when the inmate comes in to when they leave,” said Deputy Commissioner of Mental Health Services Sharon MacDougall. “These needs to start immediately when they come in.”

This shift would the mental health department’s the defacto overseer of inmate reentry, which would then connect people reentering society to programming already funded and in place, like OAR which, recently, has helped to get 41 former inmates into college.

“I don’t see this being done in place of URO,” said John. “If anything, I think we’ll be able to better connect people to services we’re already doing. We’re more complicated than we think we are, and to connect people to these programs as quickly and effectively as we can, that’s a good thing.”

To ensure all these plans come together, the County Administrator’s office will spend a one-time sum of $127,000 on planning expenses: $107,000 for an 18-month Criminal Justice Coordinator (as per CGR recommendations) and $22,000 to hire a consultant to carry out a sequential mapping study to essentially map out who’s doing what: a true audit of what services are currently being offered, what’s being replicated by multiple services that could be streamlined and what could be done further to improve the criminal justice system from a bookkeeping standpoint.

Rounding out the recommendations is $88,600 to support the cost of an additional nurse within the jail to supplement the single staffer currently within the jail, $107,600 for an additional senior probation officer and $90,000 in funding to OAR – $84,000 in regular funding for its college initiative which, this past year, sent 12 formerly incarcerated individuals to TC3 and $6,000 in one time funding for an advisor at its new service supported transitional housing home, Endeavor House.

I

t was former president John F. Kennedy who once astutely observed that the very word “secrecy” is “repugnant in a free and open society,” that we as a society have historically been opposed to its practice in the form of secret societies, secret oaths and secret proceedings.

Yet, for as long as humans have existed, so has secrecy and the societies sworn to it: the very idea of exclusivity and the mythical intrigue generated by it as readily adopted by humanity as it is objected by those on the perimeter of the so-called “in the know” crowd.

Some secret societies have garnered for themselves a weighty reputation, whether by their actions or through speculation on their activities fuelled by uncertainty from the outside. Others seem to be all in good nature – secret for the sake of secrecy – in the form of academic scholarship groups, fundraising organizations or other similar fraternities whose appeal lie solely with the fact that nobody for sure will know what is going on within the organization.

Said former President Rutherford Hayes, a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in an 1887 address to the secret society in Fremont, Ohio: “The beneficial societies, commonly known as secret societies (in fact, they are secret chiefly in name, and secret only to guard against imposture) gather under the same friendly roof in close intimacy persons differing widely in occupation, politics, religion, and conditions of life and fuse them

easily and naturally into complete harmony and cordial friendship.”

In the Ivy League and, particularly, at Cornell, the concept of the “secret society” – some of which are truly secret while most just carry out their proceedings, instead of their existence, incognito – has been one that serves as the backbone of an already elite society – a secret society within a secret society for a chosen few of an already carefully curated set. But one could also say the very concept of a secret society is a myth: that they are just honor societies, plain and simple.

Who Are… Quill And Dagger?

The meetings are carried out in secret and its activities are usually anonymous but earnestly, the shroud surrounding the society of Quill and Dagger is fairly thin.

Founded May 23, 1893, the group seems to be recognized as something toutable and recognizable on a resumé – secret society lite with the prestige of similarly prominent social groups like Yale’s Skull & Bones or the highly secretive ranks of the Seven Society at the University Of Virginia: in fact, The New York Times declared in 1929 that membership in the group constituted “the highest non-scholastic honor within reach of undergraduates.”

“WTKO was hiring college kids,” he said. “Now they were dirt cheap- nobody was making a lot of money- but we could do it all.”

He vividly describes his Ithaca College days in his recently released memoir- “Stay Tuned: My Life Behind the Mic,” where he recalls the goofier shenanigans of being a young man on the local journalism scene.

“I was doing early morning news. I could walk across the street, up the fire escape, climb into the window and into the station. It was a real rinky-dink station. WTKO was the kid’s station,” Diehl said.

He stuck around Ithaca for almost a year before he grabbed his first position at WTOP

assistant in that same newsroom. Then, when he arrived at the college in 1991, it didn’t’ take him long to get himself in front of a camera.

“Part of what drew me to the journalism program there is the hands-on nature- that you dive into the craft of journalism from the moment you arrive,” Muir said.

“My goal was simple: try as much as possible to help sharpen my feelings of what is most fulfilling. So, I utilized my access to the college’s equipment and resources, while also learning by immersing myself inside the unique community of Ithaca.”

The list of his Ithaca ventures includes working as a columnist for I.C.’s newspaper, “The Ithacan,” a producer for Ithaca College Television, a sports freelancer for the Associated Press, and as an independent documentarian.

“In this industry, as we all know, you learn from your mistakes, you pick yourself up and you go at it again- and that helps to shape you as a journalist,” Muir said.

By his senior year, Muir developed such a well-respected reporting profile that he was hired as a full-time reporter and weekend anchor at the same station in Syracuse he had worked at years before. He would commute to Syracuse and cut packages for the station almost daily- all on top of his course work.

He says this was exhausting and rewarding in a professional sense, but in a general sense advises young people to savor those moments even more. “. I often tell people who are studying journalism, who hope to do this one day and the opportunities are endless in journalism,” Muir said. “There has been no more important a time than now to be a journalist, I believe, but I would encourage a young me to just enjoy it a little more and savor those lectures a little more.”

Though he refuses to be “chained to the desk” in New York, Muir doesn’t often get to make a special pilgrimage back to Ithacasomething he dreads from a near spiritual standpoint.

“I think Ithaca College is a unique place that becomes home. Even though you arrive in the fall and you’ve left your family and you’ve left your home- Ithaca will become your home,” he said. “When you move on years later people talk about going ‘home’ to Ithaca, and I can almost guarantee you will feel that about your time in Ithaca.”

In one project, he drew criticism for the seemingly lenient nature of disciplinary action against Ithaca College’s football players after cases of violence. He remembers receiving verbal abuse from classmates and coaches, but it was in that relatively small atmosphere that he learned to embrace the true pillars of his trade- to question truth and put fears aside.

“Looking back,” he said. “It’s a useful microcosm for how much of society today sees the role of the press.”

Almost a decade later he would receive threats and criticism from a much more daunting audience.

“I was soon the rare journalist in the world who could say he’s been threatened by Ithaca College athletes and the Taliban,” Ellick joked during his 2016 commencement address to the college.

His exploits had eventually taken him to Afghanistan where his curiosity, another one of his mantras, was peaked on the issue of school girls being barred from schools by the Taliban. That curiosity led him to a daughter of a local school teacher who would become the Nobel Peace Prize winner- Malala.

Ellick, the man often credited with discovering and telling Malala’s story to the world, was never an activist from the start, but discovered that side in Ithaca.

“I remember learning about Ithaca Hours, observing town hall meetings, covering local environmental initiatives, and witnessing protests against the prospect of chain stores,”Ellick said. “And regardless of politics, I recall being somewhat wowed by the tenacity and passion among local activists, who were constantly on the frontlines of raising their voice for change.”

Today, Ellick continues to work on the front lines of news wires- pursuing stories that students on South Hill can only dream of covering.

Ithaca can be a springboard to the big time.

thaca is famous for a lot of things: gorges, its mayor, the ice cream sundae, but it can’t be overstated that many famous people have associations with the city and its two institutions of higher learning: Cornell and Ithaca College, which is known as one of the finest media-focused colleges in the country.

Here’s the story of three major names in media who got their starts right here in Ithaca.

Bill Diehl 1958 was the dawn of an era for Ithaca College. It just unveiled its brand-new television facilities, the first of its kind anywhere across the country. It was that innovative edge that brought Corning native, Bill Diehl to Ithaca rather than choosing the journalism powerhouse of Syracuse’s Newhouse School or the metropolitan giant New York University.

“I had heard that Ithaca was starting a television radio department and the school even had its own T.V. station- now this was 1958.”

But, though television was just breaking through as the new mainstream medium, it was the still ever powerful radio airwaves that called to Diehl even before he arrived to college. As a boy growing up in Corning, New York, Diehl discovered his passion for radio at the Corning Evening Leader, which hosted a

in the nation’s capital and later, the New York independent news powerhouse, WNEW. Years later, Diehl would go on to become one of the leading voices at ABC Radio News, serving as the network’s lead entertainment correspondent.

Looking back on his time in the town he recognizes the importance of making mistakes and that the relaxed “college town” atmosphere provided that.

“We could make our mistakes. We were almost playing radio. We could make our mistakes and do funny stuff,” Diehl said.

Luckily, those mistakes came early for Diehl and not later in his career, which’s success can ring off of interviews with stars from Playboy founder Hugh Heffner to comedian Robin Williams to singer songwriter Neil Diamond.

Diehl always had the passion for radio, but always credits his success to the kick start in Ithaca. Even today he makes a heartened effort to return to the hill for class reunions and stay up to date with the happenings of the college and community.

David Muir David Muir is the host of the most watched newscast in the U.S.- ABC’s World News Tonight- a title that has garnered him near-god status at the hill he still calls home.

Muir was dead set on a career in news since he started watching local T.V. newscasts in Syracuse.

“I had written a letter to the anchor and had asked him what it would take for me to have a job like his one day,” Muir said.

“I remember at the time they still had the newsroom typewriters and he typed a letter back to me that said, ‘Competition in television news is keen. There’s always room for the right person. It could be you,’” Muir said.

Jewish Sororities at Cornell

These deep-rooted groups were born of necessity

hen Cornell University was founded in 1865, virtually all private eastern colleges and universities were church-affiliated, providing a traditional classical education almost exclusively to white male students. Cornell was supposed to be an exception - a university where “any person can find instruction in any study.” Its charter explicitly stated, “persons of every religious denomination, or of no

religious denomination, shall be equally eligible to all offices and appointments.” It hasn’t always lived up to its promise.

Before the great wave of immigration in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Jewish presence in the United States was relatively small, and the number of Jewish students at Cornell was also correspondingly modest. While at least one Jewish student, Walter Rosenblatt, matriculated with the

Because of their small numbers, they did not yet form a distinctly recognizable or separate element.

Then Eastern European Jews began to immigrate to the United States in large numbers after about 1880, and between then and the passage of restrictive immigration quotas in 1924, millions of Jews from Russia, Austria-Hungary, and Romania came to America. The character of American Jewry was transformed, and the Eastern Europeans became the majority. In 1880, in a Jewish population of approximately 250,000, only one out of six American Jews was of East European extraction. (Before that, most

were of German heritage.) 40 years later, in a community that had reached four million, five out of six American Jews came from Eastern Europe.

Those new immigrants were concentrated in urban areas, especially northeastern cities.

Unlike earlier immigrants from Western Europe, many of these people were poor refugees from persecution and frequently perceived as different and threatening. By the 1920s, a climate of intolerance toward immigrants had developed, and anti-Semitic propaganda and attitudes appeared.

Indeed, in October 1925, the Ku Klux Klan, standard-bearers of these attitudes in the 1920s, staged a rally at ‘circus flats’ (roughly where the Titus Flats skate park is today) and a parade through the “business section” of downtown Ithaca. The procession, several city blocks long, complete with floats, a band and nearly 500 marching Klan members was met with “frequent applause as well as occasional expressions of disapproval”. The exact route is difficult to pinpoint 92 years later, but the proceedings concluded with the burning of a large cross.

At the same time, colleges and universities were growing quickly: between 1890 and 1925 enrollments rose almost five times as fast than the population. This, along with Jewish cultural traditions of respect for learning and an impulse toward upward social and economic mobility in America, led Jewish families to send their children to colleges and universities. By 1920, Jewish students accounted for about nine percent of the student population at Cornell.

College and university administrators began to respond to those larger numbers.

They spoke of a “Jewish problem” and attempts were made to limit the number of Jewish students through ethnic quotas, such as those established at Columbia and Harvard (though not specifically at Cornell).

More commonly, admissions became more ‘selective’ and new criteria were established: appearance, background, extracurricular achievements, and ‘character’, all judged by mostly Gentile admissions personnel and alumni. Discrimination had become commonplace in housing and social life at American universities. To the extent that all that happened at Cornell, the university did not hold to the high standard of its 1865 charter.

or many students college is the first chance to be truly involved in managing their own finances. I’m not talking about student loans, which are a separate crushing millstone, but the Art of Budgeting. Allocating scarce resources.

Microeconomic decision-making. It’s a process fraught with pitfalls, and here are some of the pitfalls with which it is fraught:

Pl astic Getting plastic is one of those turning points in life. It’s very tempting, when first possessed of a debit or credit card, to believe that it is an object imbued with wonderful magic. One need merely present a small polyvinyl rectangle and merchants cheerfully render goods and services! It’s seems like a miracle … but do not be fooled, as so many before you have been fooled.

With a debit card, of course, real money comes out of your real bank account, and the (sort of) good news is that when that money runs out, merchants stop with the cheerful rendering. You can only go broke.

With a credit card, on the other hand, you are borrowing money with every transaction, and they’ll follow you forever until you pay it back, with usurious interest and whatever other charges they can tack on. They actually have people who enjoy hounding you to the ends of the earth.

It was once thought that credit cards were inherently evil, but that was largely disproved in 1998 by Dr. L. Voldemort and his minions in a study sponsored by

Mastercard.

There’s actually no shame in paying for things by cash or check, and it has a kind of exciting, old-school cachet. Bear in mind Isaac Newton’s fourth Law of Motion: the less it seems like you’re paying with money, the more likely you will overspend.

Fraternity/ sorority? Back of a car? Ithaca has something like ten million rental units, so availability isn’t an issue. Cost is, though. One constant of college life, unless you’re rich, is a distinct lack of privacy. In a word: roommates.

Great care should be devoted in selecting them. To paraphrase Confucius: the ability to party enthusiastically is a poor indicator of a person’s suitability as a co-signer on a lease.

The Dorm vs. Apartment debate: while you can usually save money by sharing an apartment off campus, the cold, hard world of leases and landlords is less forgiving than the warm, nurturing cocoon of college housing services.

Food Examples are legion of students who subsist on a menu comprised exclusively of popcorn, toast and ramen noodles.

Others swear by the beer-and-calzone diet. Nourishment, being necessary, must somehow figure into your budget.

Extra Interesting Extracurriculars

A look at some of ithaca’s more “unusual” clubs

A

s with any college campus, Ithaca College plays host to a boatload of student organizations, most of which are the standard music, career and interest based groups, but some tend to go against that grain.

According to the Office of Student Engagement and Multicultural Affairs, the college department which oversees all of the student organizations, 208 groups are currently signed up as of Spring 2017. Those groups range in categories from student government to environment to media to professional. With the diverse span of interests prevalent on the campus, it’s no wonder that some of those 208 organizations were conceived somewhere a bit outside the box.

Here’s a few of I.C.’s more… “unusual” student clubs and organizations.

years, starting from one students love of Nerf blasters.

The premise of the game is that a few days are designated as “Humans versus Zombies days” where the entire campus is a playing area, challenging the “humans” to ward off “zombies” with Nerf blasters. During this week students, clod in bandannas and bandoliers of foam darts are often seen running throughout the campus quads, weaving in-between unsuspecting non-players trying to do battle with their peers.

“I.C. tour guides have told me that part of their training is learning how to explain the game to prospective students because they get so confused about what’s going on,” Justin Rouzier, recording secretary of the club said.

He said most non-players eventually learn to live with the commotion for a week and that the group has taken steps to ensure everyone is safe and isn’t impeding on classes. Gameplay is barred from buildings and stairs on campus and the group tells campus police when they’ll be playing.

The game is not just unique to Ithaca, other campuses across the country have similar clubs. Sometimes they even host large gatherings of up to 300 Nerf blaster wielding students who have even started becoming more of a regional community.

“I’m known as ‘Cakeman’ across many schools because at a game at Penn State university in 2016, I tripped over a chain link fence and face planted into a cake I was delivering in front of 300 plus people,” Rouzier said. “It’s Humans versus Zombies lore now.”

Ithaca College’s group includes around 30 to 40 members each semester and hold several games The I.C. Trombone Troupe I.C.’s Trombone Troupe gives a whole new meaning to Meredith Wilson’s “76 Trombones.”

The group doesn’t have all 76, but it’s not uncommon for upwards of 36 students to comprise the chamber group.

“I believe the Trombone Troupe is one of the oldest student clubs at the college, if not the oldest,” Harold Reynolds, advisor of the organization said.

He began working with the group seven years after its founding in 1981.

Since then the trombonists keep busy with performances at college and community events as well as other events like clinics held at local schools each year. They also collaborate with similar groups at Penn State University and Eastman School of Music in a revolving concert series.

“We believe the Trombone Troupe is the most active chamber ensemble in the School of Music,” Reynolds said. “We love what we do

and I think we do it very well.”

Gamer Symphony Orchestra This group of musically inclined video game enthusiasts was started in 2012 for the purpose of practicing and performing the soundtracks from video games.

“Video game music is not as followed as classical, jazz, popular, and even film scores, yet it still evokes strong emotions in the listener and player, “Frankie DiLello, the group’s head of public relations said. “The nature of video game music makes it unique from other forms of music, as it can often turn an alright video game into a great one.”

The symphony orchestra puts on two concerts every year in the music school’s Ford Hall performing music from games such as Super Smash Bros., Pokemon, Shovel Knight, Portal 2, The Legend of Zelda, and Assassin’s Creed. Most of those pieces are arranged by students specifically for the ensemble.

“While at a glance, it may seem that we only attract music nerds,” DiLello said. “We actually have a large number of non-music majors in our ensemble. Additionally, we have many people who may not be huge into video games, but just want to play some really awesome music.”

Last year, the ensemble is one of largest student organizations on campus, boasting a 55-student orchestra, 20-person choir and group of four student conductors.

Though students are only returning to the hill now, the next concert date is already set for November 1.

Drive When driving keep your eyes on the road and DON’T TEXT AND DRIVE. Drivers should share the road, be mindful of people on foot and bike, and make it a priority to give them the right of way to ensure the safety of all. It is recommended to minimize the amount you drive to reduce congestion, stress, time and costs associated with gas and parking.

dormitories initially (the first dormitory for men was not built until 1914). Sororities were slower to develop, as Cornell was an overwhelmingly male institution into the early 1900s. And Greeks dominated important aspects of student life. Members were disproportionately represented in student government. Their parties and dances were important events on social calendars and were covered even in the Ithaca Journal.

The very establishment of ‘Jewish’ fraternities and sororities at Cornell is an indication that Jewish students were being deliberately excluded from the existing Greek system. In response, Jewish students established parallel systems.

Sigma Delta Tau became the first Jewish sorority at Cornell in 1917, and a chapter of Alpha Epsilon Phi was established in 1920 as the second Jewish sorority on campus. (The freshman handbooks in the 1920s specifically identified the two groups as “Jewish sororities”.) By 1930, there were ten Jewish fraternities in addition to the two Jewish sororities on campus. With their relatively small memberships, the Jewish sororities remained highly competitive, even through the Depression years. Most Jewish students, however, did not join fraternities or sororities, remaining independent and participating in other university activities.

The 1920s was also a decade when other outlets for Jewish identity began to develop.

In 1924, the Jewish communities of Ithaca and Cornell combined as Congregation BethEl. At the same time, the fledgling national B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundation, seeking to create a welcoming environment for Jewish students on their respective campuses, organized a chapter at Cornell. Joining forces, the congregations agreed to build a temple large enough to accommodate students, and the Hillel Foundation agreed to sponsor a rabbi who could serve both students and community.

Difficulties in cracking the Greek world did not mean that all campus life was closed

to Jewish students. There was participation in the 1930s on the boards of the Cornell Daily Sun, the Cornellian, the Law Quarterly and the literary magazine The Columns. In addition, there was significant Jewish representation in the literary societies, honorary societies and athletics.

After World War II, attitudes on campus began to turn, but change was slow in coming.

A 1947 Cornell Daily Sun poll found that 43 percent of Cornell students would “not like to have a Jewish roommate”. There were still questions about Cornell’s true commitment to its charter. In an April 22, 1953 letter to the Sun, Robert and Jean Spitzer were able to detail a number of ways that Cornell had abandoned its purported non-sectarianism and favored Christian beliefs and traditions over Jewish (not to mention other) beliefs and traditions.

The Greek system, perhaps because of the nature of local chapters being part of national organizations, proved to be an intractable quarter of discrimination. Nearly 50 percent of undergraduate men were members of the 57 fraternities on campus in 1950, 21 of which had explicit restrictive clauses excluding Jews and African Americans from membership.

It was a hotly debated issue of the time. By 1952, all 13 of the campus’ sororities had agreed to have no restrictive clauses, though the fraternities as a group declined to do so.

Still, It wasn’t until 1961 that the executive board of the Student Council voted 5-3 to end “categorical discrimination” in all undergraduate organizations.

In 1968, Cornell’s Board of Trustees instituted a policy requiring all fraternities and sororities to comply with an antidiscrimination pledge.

By the late 1960s, though, the Greek system was in trouble for other reasons. The wave of antiestablishment feeling sweeping American universities weakened fraternal societies. The conservatism of the Greeks stood in contrast with the tenor of the times.

When militant African Americans occupied Willard Straight Hall in 1969, for example, members of Delta Epsilon fraternity broke

into the building to try to remove them.

The political activism of the Jewish student community in the 1960s and ‘70s was also a factor. The B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundation estimates that nationwide, Jewish students represented about one-third of students involved in campus protests, although they accounted for only about ten percent of the total college and university population. By the 1980s many of the formerly “Jewish” fraternities on campus had folded. With the end of restrictive clauses, Jewish students could join any group.

These days, Cornell Hillel estimates that 22 percent (3500 students) of Cornell’s population is Jewish, and there are many outlets for Jewish culture and identity. The Jewish Campus Service Corps provides staff for outreach activities. Nearly thirty Jewish student organizations, ranging from cultural to political to social groups, sponsor more than four hundred events and activities a year.

Kedma (Orthodox), Koach (Conservative), and Kesher (Reform) groups belong to their national organizations.

Chabad House at Ithaca is part of the national Chabad Lubavitch movement. In the late 1980s, the former Young Israel House was renovated as the Center for Jewish Living. In 2000, Cornell Dining and the Cornell Jewish Life Fund partnered with the Orthodox Union and the Jewish Learning Initiative to run 104 West!, which offers kosher dining for Jewish students and others with special dietary requirements.

Greek life remains an integral part of student life at Cornell. Currently, one-third of the undergraduate student body belongs to one of the 64 recognized fraternities or sororities that make up the community.

Thought the days of segregated rushing are over, it bears remembering that not so very long ago, Jewish students had to carve out a niche for themselves.

don’t have any memories of The Firehouse at 136 West State St. when it was an actual firehouse, but I have lots of memories of the building when Tom Newton converted it into a theater. The first production in 1994 was Nunsense, and over the next seven years, I acted in many productions there. It was at the Firehouse where I did my first ever Shakespeare with another actor named David Dietrich, and between the Firehouse, Black Umbrella Shakespeare and the Ithaca Shakespeare Company, I’ve done more stage work with Dave than any other actor. I even directed a pair of Woody Allen one-act plays right at the turn of the millennium. Fond memories are putting it lightly.

So, it’s nice that the building’s current owner wanted to leave something of a mark, in the form of a giant mural depicting the notion of “firemen,” covering the Firehouse as it faces the Commons. The team making it happen comprise a unique collaborative venture. A local Ithaca artist has paired up with artists from Dripped On The Road, a a traveling artist residency program focused on street art and illustration where the artists live, travel and create in an RV. DOTR is dedicated to enhancing the visual atmosphere of communities through public art installations and murals while fostering a unique creative environment for its resident artists. Out of their RV, the artists host discussions at colleges and universities, create artwork on paper and found objects, camp in State and National Parks/Forests and paint murals in the communities they stop in throughout the trip. The program culminates in a gallery exhibition featuring the work created during the program.

Architecture Lab currently occupying the building, wanted the mural to preserve something about its past. She and local artist Jim Garmhausen had been trying to get one going for some time and then, suddenly, this partnership presented itself.

“He’d [Garmhausen] always been looking out for people to collaborate with, and found these guys,” said Patrina. “I think being downtown, you’re part of the community already, so why not be a bigger part of it?”

Patrina is very interested in the Firehouse’s previous incarnations. “We have firemen that stop by sometimes and knock on the door,” she said. “They were volunteer firefighters in the ’60s and ’70s, and they just have memories of it.

The pole is still here. You can see a stain on the floor where the trucks leaked oil.”

Last Tuesday, anyone walking on the street could see two men working on pieces of the mural perched up high on articulating boom lifts. One of the pieces being filled was is a white backing that looks something like a totem pole. The other artist worked on a fireman to the right that seemed to have been assembled from pebbles, stones and shapes, reminiscent of Charles Crumb’s “wrinkle” technique. They descend to street level to talk about their art.

The Firehouse was a clock museum when Long Island native Jim Garmhausen moved to Ithaca. He had been busy painting the white outline.

“I’m working from a real loose sketch,” he said. “They’re pretty simple characters in terms of their structure. I kind of start out, there are a couple of pieces I stick together each time.

I’m working off a general idea off a sketch, but I don’t work my sketches past a certain point, because I wanna do it on the wall.”

“We take resident artists on the road to different cities to paint murals that are commissioned or with local non-profits in the community,” Neville said. “And we enjoy collaborating with local artists — that’s how we hooked up with Jim. The program is made for street artists, muralists and graffiti artists, and there’s no other program like it in the U.S. or abroad. Our goal is to not only expand our own artistic abilities and to meet other people and share our artistic skills with one another, but also to learn from the communities we’re visiting, and to give something back that hopefully reflects their history, past and future.”

The New York City–based company’s summer program is a nearly three-week trip to paint murals in Ithaca; Boston; Worcester, Massachusetts; and Hamburg, New Jersey, where the artists were before coming to town.

There, they painted a 50-plus foot wide mural standing about one story tall.

“The building we were painting was a rug store,” says Neville. “So, we kind of did a pattern in the background of our interpretation of ‘rugs,’ with a bunch of characters. The guy really wanted it to be kinda out there and cartoony, so we could do whatever we wanted.”

They also spent two days at Hamburg’s mural and healthy eating festival called Get Juiced.

Once they finish the Firehouse mural and rinse out their brushes, they travel to Boston to paint a mural collaboration with local artist Merk Those at 565-567 Massachusetts Ave., in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Then they go on to “Pow! Wow! Worcester” in Worcester, Massachusetts, to render a live mural painting during the opening party, and then another mural at Electric Haze on 26 Millbury St. Now I’m beginning to wonder if this project will inspire people to become mural watchers and go on tour, as it were. (It worked for the Grateful Dead and Phish.)

Going into each city, do the building owners have ideas or are the artists left to their own muses?

Looking at the work in progress next to us and citing it as an example of their work, Neville said, “We’ll ask about the history of it, what the people inside do, and we’ll try to reflect that if that’s something that interests them. And sometimes the owners or businesses will be like, ‘No, we just want to you to express what you think when you look at the wall.’ We get permission and sometimes we have to send sketches before we get there. A Story of Whoa

The Hangar cleverly adapts Shakespeare’s R&J

T

he Hangar caps off a strong season with a production of Shakespeare’s R&J, rendered with ferocious clarity and passion.

Twenty years since he first penned it, Joe Calarco’s adaptation of Romeo & Juliet remains fresh and capable of producing astonishing moments. Sticking with the highlights (gone are Paris and quite a bit of Acts 4 & 5), while sampling bits of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a clutch of sonnets, and schoolboy recitations, Calarco’s adaptation attempts to reignite the sense of danger and eros he finds in the play. He restricts his players to four boys, sets them in a regimented religious school (suggested by costumes and an opening set of routines, including parsing Latin phrases, and bits of catechism, prayers and advice on the roles of men and women) and then ignites their curiosity with the discovery of an illicit

copy of Shakespeare’s play, wrapped in a long red cloth. They begin to read it aloud, playing out the roles. Other than the cloth and book, the play’s props are few: primarily old wooden rulers and flashlights.

Shakespeare’s text enchants these students, and the two who elect to play the lovers find themselves caught in a deep attraction that is alarming to the patriarchal world and the masculine roles they’ve known. At one point their schoolmates try to stop the play in progress, fearful of its power of erotic transgression.

R&J has seen scores of productions, and a few have been cast with women, (Calarco requires that all the actors are the same gender). That is the Hangar’s choice here, featuring four superb young actors under Melissa Kievman’s fearless direction. A superlative design backs them up.

and chairs with a maple sheen, the entire back wall has been transformed to the inside of an old school auditorium, complete with wainscoting, an old portrait, a tall wooden ladder and a working clock (which lights up as the moon in the balcony scene.) The clock serves as a central metaphor (the regimentation of the student day, the “two hours’ traffic of our stage”) augmented by the distant clackclack of its progress. The severe symmetry is offset by diagonal lines of writing on wall and floor.

Sound is integral to Kievman’s production, in an amazing design from Broken Chord. Propulsive martial percussion rushes us into the fight sequences, plaintive pop songs play as romance grows, the clock ticks, the bell jangles, sounds rumble, sigh and breathe. The subtle lighting by Barbara Samuels tends to a cool crispness to the scene, rather than a gauzy romance: a sculptural effect, rather than painted.

The apt school uniforms by costume designer Megan Rutherford slyly allow for playful transformations, layered with jacket, sweater vest, tie, shirt and skirt.

Kievman keeps the cast in swirling motion, but always to a purpose. They leap atop desks (and curl asleep on them), charge with rulers, scatter and return, as they are caught in the story’s rhythm.

They also stop stock still, overwhelmed, and fall into each other in schoolgirlish comfort.

It took some of the audience a little time to orient themselves (Calarco keeps his school setting more abstract than literal), but as the actors delve into Shakespeare’s language, they leaned forward, caught in a simultaneous act of imagination.

Nicole Villamel plays the instigator, a slightly roguish Romeo, already tetchy and dawdling into poetry, then delighting in the power of her assumed masculinity.

(I couldn’t help but flash on Little Women, and Villamel is a perfect Jo.) Villamel’s ardor and pacing is drawn into the still well of Juliet played by Eunice Akinola (who doubles as Benvolio) rendered with blossoming awareness and a sense of awe at the doubling of passion she feels.

Nicole King has both swagger and lethalness as Tybalt, while neatly playing the Nurse with sassiness and caring.

Tripling as Mercutio, Lady Capulet and the Friar, Amanda Kristin Nichols uses a precisely calibrated physicality with sharp comic timing yet with entirely different effect for each.

This is a production to be savored, rich in language and action, beautifully imagined. Brava. •

Defending the Land of Marvel The Defenders Expands the Marvel universe

O

nce again, Netf lix has dropped a new series that I have to watch, and once again, I didn’t see light (or people) for an entire business day.

Marvel’s The Defenders is the culmination of phase one of their Netflix deal: four separate series comprising 52 episodes that establish Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter) and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) — and a second season of Daredevil — and now an eight-episode story that unites all four NYC heroes against Sigourney Weaver, a new and imposing player within the evil criminal cabal established as The Hand.

At this point, Finn Jones’ wooden and whiney Iron Fist has proven to be the runt of the litter; it didn’t help that he dressed like Pee Wee Herman, and most of Jones’ fight sequences weren’t very well-stage — certainly not up to the level of Daredevil’s first season.

Jones benefits from being part of the ensemble — I call that “The Thor Effect” — but the new series depends too much on him as the core of the story, and Jones just isn’t as interesting, defined or well-written as the other three Marvel True Believers. I dig Krysten Ritter’s surly self-loathing as Jessica Jones the most; she may be the best reluctant hero since Bruce Willis in the Die Hard series. (For you Jessica Jones fans, a second season is on the way.)

One thing I’ve come to appreciate about Netf lix’s Marvel shows, aside from their more grounded and, frankly, adult milieus is that they haven’t settled into any kind of story formula.

Sometimes we don’t meet the bad guy until episode four and sometimes, they’re among the first characters

we meet — and usually with smarter and more nuanced notions of crime drama.

Weaver is about as far from a typical villainess as you’d expect, more of a troubled matriarch and a better and wiser adversary than she might seem to be at first.

Dawson is the MVP of this entire series. More than any other actor, she has helped convince the world that all these disparate heroes could live in the same city. Just when I was really beginning to tire of how silly the whole notion of Iron Fist feels, Dawson entered the story, began making the kind of sardonic comments I was

will kick off with a much longer and involved flashback that generally shed interesting light on events happening back in the present. The difference between eight episodes and 13 is significant, and I think it takes a good direction. The Defenders offers a solid story that would have felt padded were it any longer.

And considering how many characters have to be woven together from four series, The Defenders is now a true ensemble. It was fun seeing now-beloved characters return to the narrative, and with actors like Elden Henson, Jessica Henwick, Simone Missick, Deborah Ann Woll, Carrie-Anne Moss, Élodie Yung and Scott Glenn, the Netflix MCU is populated with some very well-defined characters.

And even with all the great ta lent I just mentioned, it’s clear Rosario

making as a viewer, and raised the whole enterprise a letter grade.

If you’re familiar with Final Draft, a software program that formats screenplays, I have a hunch that future editions will have a new command key: Command R means “Rosario Dawson enters.”

By the way, comic book af icionados like my old buddy Ken Pardee know that Netf lix’s crew aren’t even the actual original Defenders. For you casual fans, that lineup consisted of Doctor Strange, Hulk, Namor (AKA The Submariner) and the Silver Surfer.

If Marvel can rescue Namor from the depths of development hell, that means that Marvel’s movie arm could have another version of The Defenders. When is enough going to be too much?

Not yet, obviously.•

Judy Collins Still Shines in the Music scene

udy Collins says the best thing about touring with her friend Stephen Stills is that she is now a “rock ’n’ roll guitar player.”

The chestnut brown canary, as Stills immortalized her in the classic “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” when the two were a couple in the late 1960s, is in the middle of 50-concert tour with her old beau. Although they maintained a friendship for 50 years, this is the first time they’ve taken a show on the road together. It stops in Vestal Aug. 28 at the Anderson Center for the Performing Arts on SUNY Binghamton’s campus.

Collins, whose career started in the late 1950s as a classical pianist and vocalist, is best known for her ballads, “Send in the Clowns,” “Suzanne” and “Both Sides Now” that at 78, she still sings in a flawless crystalline voice. The New York Times has called the singer “the ageless wild angel of pop.”

But Stills, 72, a member of the legendary bands Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills and Nash and, most recently, The Rides with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, comes out of a guitar master’s history (he is ranked 28th on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the 100 best guitarists of all time) that began with his performances with Jimi Hendrix in the late ’60s. Put simply, he rocks, and Collins is happily going right along with it.

“I love what we’re doing. It’s so much fun; we talk and we laugh, and we never really did that when we were together,” said Collins in a phone interview last week from her hotel in Alexandria, Virgina, where she and Stills had a two-night engagement. She jokes that they should have gone straight to being recording and touring partners and skipped the tumultuous romance — no surprise, Collins said, when two people with rising careers, who are both “hungry, ambitious and bossy”; it’s impossible to manage that in the same room, let alone in a relationship. She has said it didn’t stand a chance.

During a concert in Atlanta early in the tour, Stills offered the wry comment that “the secret to our chemistry is that we married other people.”

On the road, Stills has been a “warm, sweet, kind and loving person,” Collins said. “He takes my guitar every night, and brings it back tuned.”

The tour, and the pair’s new album Everybody Knows, (due out Sept. 22 on Collins’ label, Wildf lower/Cleopatra) is something that Collins and Stills talked about a lot and meant to do for a long time.

“We knocked this around for a few years, but both of us had big projects that all rolled together, and now, we finally have time to do it,” Collins said.

They would have liked to have the album ready for when the tour began in late July, but will settle for the late September release and will have it to sell on the road at that point.

S o, how d id t he y decide what to record?

She knew she wanted a Leonard Cohen song, a tribute to her friend who died in 2016 and whose career she helped launch by recording “Suzanne.” She chose “Everybody Knows,” for the new album and Stills quickly agreed that it should also be the title.

They looked to Bob Dylan for “Girl from the North Country,” to the Traveling Wilburys for “Handle with Care,” and the first song that Stills and Collins ever wrote together, “Who Knows Where the Time Goes.” Collins also included “Houses,” which she wrote for Stills after they broke up and a new song, “River of Gold.” Stills’ “So Begins the Task,” “Judy” and “Questions” are also on the album.

And what can the audience in Binghamton expect to hear? If the show in Atlanta was any indication, some of the songs will come from the new album. Stills will also offer up “What it’s Worth,” “Treetop Flyer” and “Bluebird,” which promises a soaring guitar solo. And Collins, with a nod to Joni Mitchell, will sing “Both Sides Now” and “Chelsea Morning.”

Fifty shows between the end of July and early November might tire out performers decades younger than Stills and Collins, but is a lifestyle they are used to. Collins insists that her manager and her agent put together the tour so it would be enjoyable and not exhausting.

“We have about a 10-day break at one point,” she said.

Besides, the word “retirement” is not in Collins’ vocabulary. When the journey with Stills is over, she will jump into a tour to promote her new book, Cravings, about her struggle with eating disorders and addiction. She also has another new CD out, A Love Letter to Stephen Sondheim, and will do some shows in New York City, where she lives with her husband, designer Louis Nelson, and several cats. The couple has been together since 1979 but married in 1996.

“Artists, musicians, writers, we don’t retire,” Collins said. “There is no reason to retire; especially when we are getting better and better and keep learning new things.” •

t’s a long-standing tradition that CRT Artistic Director Kerby Thompson introduces the evening’s fare clad in costumes tied in theme to the show.

As the lights dimmed for a performance of Katherine DiSavino’s Nana’s Naughty Knickers, I wondered what Thompson would be wearing. Well, not to be a tease — in keeping with the show — but you’ll just have to see for yourself.

And remember: Dignity.

Always dignity.

There’s not much dignified going on this farce guaranteed to put a smile on your face. All the action takes place in the spacious New York City rent-controlled apartment occupied

by Sylvia Charles (Peggy Lewis), who inherited the place with her late husband from a prosperous bootlegger. Her granddaughter, Bridget (Jennifer Brunker), is moving in for the summer under the watchful yet affectionate eye of beat cop Tom O’Grady (Tom DeMichele).

Bridget soon discovers t hat her Na na, who worked at Ma idenform for decades, is running an illegal boutique out of the apartment — just the kind of information that Sylvia’s cheapskate landlord Gil Schmidt (Charles Baran) would love to use against her to evict her. A very big — and very wrong (and I do mean wrong) shipment of merchandise is delivered, Sylvia’s biggest client is due imminently and the cop and the landlord keep popping in at t he most

load of us.” There are three doors and an arch onstage, which is a lways a good sign, and Shelly Barish’s homey and innocuous set hides some of the most jawdropping surprises you’re likely to see. Aficionados of deft physical comedy will agree that the way Brunker “helps” DeMichele exit his first scene in Act Two is about as good as it gets.

The entire cast clicks, though Lee’s rhythms as Sylv ia seemed a bit of f.

Brunker makes the most of Bridget’s logical resistance to topics like jail time and tax evasion, getting drunker as things go from bad to worse.

The supporting players are pure comedy gold.

Sebast ia n Ryder pret t y well steals the show as Sylvia’s sarcastic but game bestie, Vera Walters. Clad

that he didn’t use in CRT’s last production of Appointment With Death. Blustering around in a ver y unfortunate green-checked jacket — kudos to costume designer Ricky Lurie, who had a Herculean task to do for a show like this — Barish seems to have stormed in from a great old Frank Tashlin movie.

Caiti Marlowe is a sassy, funny and sexy standout as the slinky and ambitious Heasther Van Pree; like all great support players, you want to peel off with her and see what her life is like. Nancy Kane, last seen in CRT’s Footloose, is also terrific in a role best left unspoiled, and Josh Apker has a nice bit as an amorous UPS man. Too bad he didn’t show up for the curtain call. •

ept. 7 may have felt like a far-off date back in June, but in just a few weeks, the students of Dewitt Middle School will be starting up the school year. Middle school will likely boast new challenges for incoming sixth graders and for returning seventh and eighth graders, but many students can begin assuage their anxieties with something simple: school supplies. And for several students, buying supplies can be a financial burden to their families.

On Thursday night at The Range, The House of Merlot will host a “fundrager” to benefit Dewitt Middle School, gathering donated school supplies for the incoming students. The house will be raising funds while also performing in drag and lighting up the bar with dance and music — hence the “rager.”
