City Keeps Tax Rate New Solution to Level ... So Far City Tree Health

axpayers have their last chance to comment on the 2016 City of Ithaca budget at the Wednesday, Nov. 4 Common Council meeting.

The property tax rate is currently supposed to stay at $12.89 per $1,000 of assessed value. The estimated tax levy for 2016 provided in the mayor’s budget is $21,765,380, with $13,675,000 coming in from sales tax.

The total spending number is $67.7 million at the moment for 2016, with $54.2 million for general fund expenditures. The police department will cost over $11.6 million in 2016, with over $6.2 million earmarked for personnel costs. Fire protection comes in at just under $10 million next year. City employee benefits will cost the city over $18 million, and debt service comes in at a bit over $9 million. Staffing the new Commons will cost a bit over $217,500 in salary, $820,000-plus will go toward serving debt incurred in building the new piazza.

Council has spent many hours at city hall over the month of October considering over-budget requests from city departments, moving numbers in and out over the course of five meetings.

The biggest item council has so far decided to add is $1.3 million for Cass Park ice rink renovations from capital funds. Another half-million request contributing to the $4.2 million-plus in general fund bonds is a design for a new East Hill fire station. There’s been much talk about selling the Collegetown station to a developer, and Chief Tom Parsons told council that there’s a good likelihood of needing to put a half million into that building for heating and cooling system costs in upcoming years anyway.

No Ithaca Police Department representative attending any meetings this reporter sat through for over-budget requests, but council did eliminate a $715,000 request for capital funding to upgrade the HVAC system at the Clinton Street station. Mike Thorne, superintendent of public works, described the police station’s boiler room as being much like a “World War Two battleship.”

On the staffing side of things, council has approved $22,080 for a part-time forestry worker to assist Jeanne Grace in her work maintaining the city’s trees and natural areas. A part-time accountant, a long-standing request from the controller’s continued on page 4

ircus Wunderbar” will play in Kulp Auditorium at Ithaca High School again this year on Sunday, Nov. 8.

Three shows full of characters invented

by Michael Hilbig—aka Hilby the Skinny German Juggle Boy—along with performances by Circus Culture entertainers and other guests will again amaze and amuse young and old.

Circus Wunderbar was first created for the Kitchen Theatre’s Family Fare lineup

by Hilbig for the 2002-03 season. In 2006, local magician David Moreland put on a fundraiser for the Fall Creek ParentTeachers Association (PTA) that brought several hundred people out to see his act.

In 2007, Moreland says that the Fall Creek PTA promoted a show with the “Bubble Man” where they offered a split of the proceeds in exchange for an opportunity to do promotional presentations before the event. By 2008, Hilby signed on to do his many acts, and by 2010 all eight of Ithaca City School District’s elementary schools were involved in promoting the show.

“We want it to be accessible to everybody, so we offer scholarship tickets,” Moreland said. “And we keep the tickets very reasonable. A lot of PTAs around the country have to sell overpriced tins of popcorn and stupid junk. This is a no cavity, no calorie, fun event that’s affordable.” citybudget contin u ed from page 3

Council approved a $277,100 package of equipment requested by water and sewer head Erik Whitney as a whole, including a new loader and service vehicle. Whitney made the argument to council that equipment breaking down was costing the city plenty in the time of workers standing around, waiting to borrow machines from the street department or sometimes the Town of Ithaca.

Much of council’s discussions in last week’s two meetings circled around an additional, $50,000, contribution to Tompkins Consolidated Area Transit (TCAT) over the near $600,000 already in the budget for contracts, fees, and debt service. TCAT representatives made the argument that with the extra funding, the county and Cornell would match for a total of $150,000 to add toward buying new buses.

For his part, Hilbig says that he “couldn’t be a strongman and couldn’t do magic” but he can make characters that “make fun” of the stereotypes. His personal favorite is Vladi the Uplifting Weight Lifter, who is based on a Bulgarian strongman Hilbig knew in Europe who held records for balancing things like a motorbike and a grown person.

“He’d refer to himself in the third person and had no sense of humor about it, though he thought he did,” Hilbig said vote last Tuesday, then removed the funds when they didn’t seem close to finding the extra $111,000 they needed for all the overbudget requests. Eventually, controller Steve Thayer mentioned that $40,000 was left over in a designated fund from the days when buses were city-run, and council agreed to send that to TCAT. On the always-awkward subject of their own salaries, council currently has a $500 per member raise in salary approved; right now they make $9,641 per year.

At the Oct. 28 meeting Donna Fleming moved to eliminate the increase.

“I did the calculation at a living wage of $15 per hour, and averaging 12 hours a week, that’s what our current salary is, that seems kind of fair to me,” Fleming said.

“There are other better ways to spend the $5,000 … when I ran for common council, I didn’t know it was a paid job.”

The raise could also be figured at $9.12 per week, George McGonigal replied.

“Speaking for myself, I spend more than 12 hours a week on this job. I appreciate my colleagues’ magnanimous attitude, but to me it’s almost disrespectful to this position not to include this.”

Over the years, proceeds from Circus Wunderbar have become the “biggest line item in the PTA budget” at Fall Creek, according to organizers Paul and Tamara Acosta. There, the circus gate has recently helped with a purchase of 20 new keyboards and supporting enrichment programs. In other schools, funds go to either the school PTA or other academic causes; at Cayuga Heights, they fund the Spanish program, and at Belle Sherman they help out the fifth grade class and their yearly trip.

Tamara will be lending her operatic stylings to Circus Wunderbar as a new addition; she will be giving the announcements to the tune of one of the Carmen arias. Hilbig’s wife Sarah Blodgett will again be the MC, this year as the character “Lady Starstruck,” and Ithaca’s new circus school, Circus Culture, will bring featured performers. • Circus Wunderbar will have three performances on Sunday, Nov. 8 at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 ($10 at the door) and can be purchased at Ithaca City School District elementary schools or at fallcreekpta.org/wunderbar.

voted for a $5,000 increase in the mayor’s salary. A human resources analysis performed last year of the position was cited by a few alderpersons, which said that if hiring from the private sector, the salary range for the mayor’s responsibilities would be somewhere between $115,000 and $140,000. Though Mayor Myrick didn’t ask for the raise in his budget, he did say that in his first run he knew of competent people with careers who declined to run because the salary—right now, just under $53,000—wasn’t adequate.

“If the position were compensated where it should be, you’d get more people interested in this office,” Myrick said. “Not until I’m collecting social security, and then others can run.”

The last few pages of the mayor’s budget aren’t technically city spending, but you will hear numbers from them over and over. The 2016 tax exemption analysis from the assessor says the current property tax value of the city is about $4.23 billion. Just over $2.5 billion of that is exempted from the tax rolls, with $2.066 billion of that listed under educational institutions. A rough tax levy on that amount of property value is about $26.6 million. • —Josh

While weighing these options that summer, the board received another offer from the Savings Bank of Tompkins County to buy the land, clear of structures, for $122,100. They had much to think about. In debating the issue, the Board considered—among other factors—the potential tax revenues to be expected from Downing’s conversion of the property to commercial purposes, a task on which he had committed to spend approximately $500,000.

The board was also concerned about the fact that they couldn’t tell what the bank planned to do with the property.

Most significantly, they paid heed to a nascent but growing movement in Ithaca toward historic preservation, partly a reaction to the recent

Just a block away is an Ithaca institution that embodies much that is good and enduring about our city—Dewitt Mall— and the city came within a hair’s breadth of losing it.

From 1885 to 1960, the east side of Cayuga Street between Buffalo and Seneca Streets was the site of Ithaca High School.

(For the 60 years prior to that, it had been the location of the Ithaca Academy.)

During that time, after the 1885 school building burned to the ground in 1912, the current structure was built, now called the Dewitt Building; it was completed one hundred years ago in 1915. Then, when the high school was relocated from there to the former Percy Field in 1960, the building was used as Dewitt Junior High School for another ten years before that school was also relocated to its present site on Warren Road. The Cayuga Street structure was no longer needed by the City School District.

It was 1971, and the 56-year-old building, soon to be vacant, faced an uncertain future at a precarious time. The 1960s had ushered in a period of urban renewal, and Ithaca, like most Northeastern cities, had gotten busy removing buildings considered to be outmoded and rundown. The century-old building, which has been a mall almost as long as it had been a school, still has a lot of its original character. For one thing, it is big and solid, with open spaces and the sort of indestructible building materials that were designed to withstand decades of hard use by teenagers. To walk into the ground floor is to be immersed in the sights and sounds of Ithaca. Music wafts from Ithaca Guitar Works; the hall is brightened

by Cat’s Pajamas’ colorful block table; you can browse racks of used books outside The Bookery, a rare and antique book store; you can find fun vintage postcards outside Pastimes; and there’s the scent of brunch at DeWitt Café or dinner at Moosewood. Buffalo Street Books, saved from extinction by a massive community buy-out in 2011, is a favorite, Ithaca’s only cooperatively owned bookstore, and Greenstar Oasis is a community-owned cooperative grocery store featuring organic, fair trade, and local foods.

The upstairs floors, quiet and bright with high ceilings, are apartments, various offices, and artist studios. It’s the sort of mixed-use development that city planners dream of.

Arguably, if one were to look for a place that is reflective of the character of our city while also being connected to its past, one would be hard put to find a better place than Dewitt Mall. Certainly, had the building met its fate with a wrecking ball in the early 1970s, downtown Ithaca would not be the same. • — Charley T

When We Live Together T

he members of the Millennial generation, a portion of which has populated our colleges for the last 10 or 15 years, are said to be the most racially tolerant in U.S. history.

This is according to a poll conducted by MTV (!) and David Binder Research.

Sean McElwee, writing for Al Jazeera, summarized the poll’s findings: “Nearly all respondents said they believe ‘everyone should be treated equally, regardless of race,’ 72 percent said ‘their generation believes in equality more than older people,’ and 58 percent believed ‘racism will become less and less of an issue’ as they take on leadership roles. More than half believe that racial bias is ‘small but real’ and ‘subtler’ than it was in the past.”

It is this last bit that would seem to be in evidence on the Ithaca College campus and is causing students of color and their supporters to publicly put their foot down about it. While many of the incidents of racism on campus are reported to take the form of “microaggressions,” a recently proposed party theme was crassly aggressive.

An off-campus fraternity advertised a “preps & perps” costume romp. They suggested that preps should dress as stereotypical white folks and perps as stereotypical blacks. That there was an immediate outcry and the party was cancelled affirms the MTV polls finding that most Millennials are well intended when it comes to race. But they are also correct that there is a “small but real” bias remaining.

Time Is of the Essence

So, Millennials can be insensitive to each other, but a very public incident during the college’s “Blue Sky” event demonstrated that they might have something to teach older folks. Billionaire alumnus Christopher Burch (Class of 1976; Baby Boomer) began referring to Tatiana Sy (Class of 2009) as “the savage” after she used the word as an adjective to describe her attitude toward learning while at IC. Those interviewed by The Ithacan, the student newspaper, were angered by Burch’s remark, but perhaps even more incensed that none of the other person of ostensible authority in the room called attention to his quite clueless attitude.

According to The Ithacan, students have complained that they had not been asked to play a larger part in Blue Sky, which is ostensibly asking past and present members of the IC community to imagine its future. The 30 students among the crowd of 200 at the Blue Sky event must of sat there thinking, “They want to hear from this parochial, backward old crank, but they don’t want to hear what we have to say?”

alloween is always a big deal in Ithaca— a special day for our many visual and performance artists (and, somewhere among them, children)—but this year was exceptional, as it fell on a Saturday, with fine weather, and a semiimpromptu event involving wizardry (in both theme and execution) lured thousands of people downtown.

Afterward, the costumed packed bars, to impress and be impressed, for what better environment exists for giddy admiration than where alcohol is served?

They shared bar space with the uniformed: wearers of blue and orange, team colors of the New York Mets, who convened that night to imbibe and watch the televised doings of the Mets in game 4 of the World Series.

It was a long night for everybody (especially Met fans: a loss), so everyone must have especially appreciated the extra hour of rest, as clocks turned back from Daylight Savings Time to Standard Time, just as the night was wrapping up.

Sunday evening brought the reckoning and adjustment, as nightfall comes earlier now, and will not come any later for about 14 weeks.

I saw a meme on Facebook that said, “So happy to turn back the clock, so that night comes at 4 p.m., said no one ever.”

I understand the sentiment, but the thing is, it’s going to get dark when it gets dark. It doesn’t matter to Earth whether we call it 4 or 5 o’clock or anything else.

If we want, we can take back the light by getting up earlier. It’s not easy to do, but easier if one goes to bed earlier; and what’s wrong with that?

I mentioned to someone at work that I like this time of year because it encourages sleep. “For real,” she said. “And you don’t even have kids.” She has two. She said this is her favorite season.

You can’t tell time what to do. You can work with it, but only as partners. You can never be boss.

A few years ago, the New York Giants had “a distraction,” in the euphemism, when a player was involved in an incident at a

nightclub involving tempers and a gun. At a press conference the next day, the coach scratched his head and said, “I tell these guys. I say it all the time. I don’t know what good can happen outside at 3 or 4 in the morning.”

I think about the urge to control time rather than work with it when driving, seeing people risk lives, or at least a lot of damage, trying to get someplace two or three minutes earlier than if they drove sensibly.

On Route 13, cars tailgate so no one can get in front of them, like the drivers are late for surgery. On State Street at Route 13 south, someone eastbound will run the red light every single time (or perhaps I exaggerate, and it is only 99 times out of 100).

I watch shenannies like these and think: Hey struntz, next time, leave five minutes sooner.

An area where Americans—a lot of us, anyway—don’t like our time messed with is around the year-end holidays. Every year you will hear people howl about stores promoting Christmas sales well before Thanksgiving, not long after Halloween.

It might seem an odd sensitivity in a consumer culture such as ours. Maybe the push to consume is so vigorous normally that some pushback is inevitable (and healthy) when the pressure steps up in the Christmas season (i.e., November on).

Ithaca is a place of inconspicuous consumption, and we don’t brook much seasonal hard-sell here. We barely tolerate soft-sell. I saw this at GreenStar recently.

GreenStar has a bulletin board for customer comments. Someone posted a note about some beers on sale.

“You’re featuring Oktoberfest beers,” it said. “It is mid-September. It is still summer.

YOU MONSTERS.” Far be it from me to rush Thanksgiving, still three weeks away, but I am thankful for living in a place you’ll read funny things such as this. I’ll write about other things to be thankful for in Ithaca soon. But not too soon. •

Wayne is not one of them. Its population is 92.1 percent white and 2.8 percent black. It seems unlikely that it was more diverse during Burch’s youth. This is to say that Burch’s formative years were spent among other white people.

Unfortunately for race relations this sort of upbringing is still quite typical for white Americans. In 2012 Institute on Metropolitan Opportunity at the University of Minnesota Law School did a study that showed that the number of American suburbs considered “racially diverse” increased 37 percent between 2000 and 2010. Myron Orfield, one of the study’s designers, said, “People that grow up in diverse communities are comfortable living and working in the multiracial society we’re going to become.” Montgomery County, Maryland is 62 percent white and 18 percent black, but Bethesda, which is in Montgomery County, is 83 percent white and 3 percent black. A study of New York City suburbs identified the same tendency for counties to be diverse, but towns continued to be segregated.

According to collegefactual.com the student population of Ithaca College is 70.2 percent white and 4.1 percent African American (and 11.3 percent have no declared race). The faculty is 88.7 percent white. The diversity in the faculty, however, is quite suburban. But the racial diversity in the student body is likely greater than that of most of the suburban (and rural) communities that the students hail from. Herein lies the problem.

Racial insensitivity arises because white people are just not used to being around people of color. They don’t really know them as people. White Millennials are more likely to know peers of color because, as the suburbs have become more diverse, public schools have become more integrated. This has happened because children from different towns (which have maintained segregation) may attend the same centralized school system. Insensitivity remains, as we see by the example of the misbegotten frat party theme, because predominantly white school districts still exist and because even if a school is integrated, racial segregation may persist within it.

White Baby Boomers like Burch and many of the faculty members (those who aren’t Gen X) are that much less likely to have known people of color in their formative years and so are more likely to be incredibly thick about race. Although some Millennials have experienced diversity firsthand and therefore actually “get it,” far fewer older people have and do. Those Millennials who haven’t experienced diversity are at least encouraged by constant messaging in the media to be more tolerant. They know how to talk the talk, but people of color—see Justin Simiens’s Dear White People—think they still need some help walking the walk. • Next week’s cover story will be about the racial tensions at Ithaca College.

ithaca com We have recently started a blog on the home page of the Ithaca Times. It is called “What We Think” and we encourage people to read it and very much encourage you to respond to the posts, which are written by the managing editor and the staff reporter.

The secretary of the county Democratic Committee to umbrage at a blog entry that insisted that write-in candidates were as valid as any other candidate: So write-in candidates are the same as candidates who go through the petition or caucus process and are chosen by members of their party to run? They are the same as candidates who win a primary election?

Every year, a few people write in “Mickey Mouse” when they are not interested in choosing a particular candidate. Is Mickey just as legitimate as the people who are on the ballot?

If you believe what you say, Bill, why not just let every ballot be a write-in ballot and ensure a win for Mickey? You are quite right that write-ins sometimes win elections, especially when the turnout is low and those write-ins beat the bushes to get out the vote. But I don’t think you’d be equating write-in candidates with vetted, nominated or elected candidates if it weren’t for your unhappiness with the situation in District 4. To make that equation is to discredit the entire electoral process. I hope you will rethink or at least emend your opinion. Thanks.

If the majority of the electorate actually votes for “Mickey Mouse” (or some other imaginary candidate), then that is a vote of no confidence in the party. I doubt our state constitutions make a provision for this eventuality, so I presume a judge would have to render a decision. Elections exist to make manifest the will of the people. They do not exist to make manifest the selections of political parties.

Deer Control The Deer Management Focus Area in Tompkins County is not working yet

n Tompkins County and across New York State, efforts have been underway for years to reduce the herd to levels that make more sense for deer and people alike.

What’s desired are deer herds that are healthy, maintain gender balance, and aren’t overrunning residential areas, eating up forest undergrowth, and sprinting across roads with bouncing abandon.

Some day, if these programs achieve their goals, installing a cowcatcher on your Volvo might look like an absurd rather than a prudent decision.

Tompkins County is something of a testing area for deer management programs. Cornell has attempted sterilization of does in the past, and concluded that it is not enough to control the population. Experiments with trapping and euthanasia have also been conducted on university lands. In 2012 New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) made most of the county into a “deer management focus area” (DMFA), a program which allows hunters to take up to two antlerless deer per day and added a two-week, antlerlessonly season in January.

In the villages of Trumansburg and Lansing, archers have been allowed to hunt within municipal limits in recent years— made much more practical by the state reducing the “safe zone” around residences for bow from 500 to 150 feet. Cayuga Heights hires professional sharpshooters to cull the herd with the assistance of bait.

Hunters are probably not that surprised to see skiers, but skiers are always surprised to see hunters,” Ludgate said. He said when the new January season was announced, no one on his bikeski listserv of 700-some people “freaked out.”

“A hiker in the woods during hunting season should be no more at risk, if they are wearing high-visibility clothing, than a hunter is,” said Joe McMahon, an avid hiker who is chair of the city’s Natural Areas Commission. “In essence they are nothing other than a hunter without a bow or gun. Problems arise when people either don’t know, or disregard their responsibility. For a hiker that means going onto land that may be open other times of the year but are closed during hunting season such as private property that the Finger Lakes Trail passes through, or Cornell and land trust preserves that restrict access to only hunters.”

McMahon reminds people that city areas are closed to hunting; discharging any sort of bow or gun is illegal in the city, and that unleashed dogs can pose a problem when hunters are on the trail.

“If I’m hiking during bow hunting season, I don’t worry at all,” Ludgate said.

“The hunter has to be so close to deer and is sitting under such quiet conditions, there’s hikers who have walked right by bowhunters and not even knew they’re there.”

Hunters can fill their freezer with little hassle here, but Bernd Blossey, a

professor of natural resources at Cornell who researches deer and their effects on invasive plant management, predicts that increasing permits won’t be enough to get the deer population to a proper level.

“Even if we allow each hunter to take as many animals as possible, we will not see much of a change since most hunters are just out to take one for the wall, one for the freezer and maybe one for a friend,” Blossey said. “That’s two to three per season. The few individuals, who do more as volunteers and stewards, will not change the overall picture significantly.”

McMahon suggests stronger incentives for bowhunters, more permits, “and a bigger push to tie venison to the local food movement and make it easier for hunters to get the venison to people who want it but don’t hunt.”

Dan Edwards, president of the Trumansburg Fish & Game Club, is 59 years old. He said he’s “given up on trying to convince people” of the science behind hunting.

“Killing deer is preserving them. It’s a concept that’s difficult for people to wrap their heads around,” Edwards said. “It’s a never-ending job once man has interfered with nature. We’ve now become the stewards of the land, and we can’t just walk away from it. If you do, Mother Nature says ‘screw you.’ Disease starts to happen, a lack of food starts to happen, and you have years of deer that are starving and not healthy. If we didn’t hunt, they would die a long, miserable death.”

Culling the Herd

There’s lots of work left to do to get deer populations in balance. In close to villages, hunting programs have stemmed the flow, anecdotally speaking. Miller reports that deer are no longer “roaming everywhere” in Trumansburg after two years of hunting and are less of a danger on village streets. But Edwards, reports watching from a tree stand as 32 antlerless deer wandered by on the last day of the 2014 season, a number hungry hunters in other regions of the country could only imagine.

Hunters who were concerned the deer population would be annihilated by new bag limits had an idea “so far out of left field it never materialized,” said Blossey.

“When I’m thinking about success, I define it as the betterment of ecological conditions in forest and agricultural areas and suburbia,” Blossey said. “In that way, we really don’t know that anything has changed.”

Blossey has hunted since he moved to Ithaca 24 years ago. He admits,“what is beneficial for the hunter is not always beneficial for the ecologist.” He says the literature is clear that deer, by excessive browsing and potentially other factors, like carrying seeds on their coats, help spread invasive plant species. An exclosure study—that is, putting up a fence to keep deer out—that Blossey worked in the Hudson Valley on showed that garlic

mustard, barberry, and Japanese stiltgrass, three invasive species, were reduced by keeping deer out. Trillium and the other charismatic spring wildflowers once covered much of the forest floor, which is now bare ground. On Cornell lands, red oak plantings have been used to measure the effect of deer browse on seedlings.

“That should be the goal of deer management, not just reducing their numbers, but getting it down to a point where the effects for the forest are beneficial,” Blossey said. “I’d like to see some deer, but not at the expense of all the other organisms in the woods.”

Another thing deer carry is ticks, which contribute to Lyme disease. Here, again, Blossey said the literature is clear that heavy whitetail populations increase the spread of the bacteria.

“Regulated hunting appears to be able to contribute to some population declines, in some cases,” Blossey said, “but there is no evidence to suggest we can get to the less than 17 deer per square kilometer, [which would be] sufficient to affect Lyme disease.”

Courtney LaMere, the big-game biologist for the DEC’s Region 7, said the agency isn’t yet releasing harvest numbers for the county’s DMFA. The county was the “ideal location” to test the program, LaMere said, “because we were running out of methods for increasing the adult doe harvest.”

“In areas like central Tompkins County, where access to huntable land is significantly limited, annual hunter harvest may be too low to prevent the population from continuing to grow above the carrying capacity,” LaMere said.

“This is particularly so if hunter harvest is additionally restricted by the number of reproducing female deer that any one hunter can remove from the population each year — that is, by limiting doe tags. While methods for managing deer populations vary, most require removal of a significant portion of adult does in order to control population growth.”

The old consensus was that bucks should be hunted, rather than does. The trophy appeal of bucks still holds—though upstate New York is not known as a mecca for those seeking large racks—but shooting the bucks and leaving the does has created a genetically inferior herd, Edwards said.

It also does nothing to stem population growth, because deer have no concept of monogamy.

“When you have more does than bucks, things go awry,” Edwards said.

“The inferior bucks have the opportunity to breed as much as they can. When the herd is even, one buck for one doe, the dominant buck is going to be spreading his genes.”

Before 2012 Tompkins County was receiving about a quarter of all deer damage permits within the nine-county area of Region 7 and a disproportionate number of permits for the deer management assistance program (DMAP).

The DMAP permits only allowed four

antlerless deer per season to be taken by any one hunter, LaMere said, not nearly enough to achieve program goals.

“Allowing individuals with access rights already and loosening their ability to take two deer a day was the idea [of the DMFA] to increase the harvest rate,” Blossey said. “It just hasn’t materialized.”

May I Shoot Here?

Finding accessible land is one of the toughest challenges for hunters.

“I think we all can think of a parcel of land near our homes that used to be vacant farmland and is now host to low density housing,” LaMere said. “In using these large housing lots we have converted lands that were once easily hunted into a patchwork of parcels where it’s difficult to find the space required to discharge a hunting implement.”

by Cornell on “hunter, landowner, and local resident viewpoints” about the

didn’t register for a second year said they had trouble getting access to private land, and a third of landowners who owned a quarter of the acreage said they didn’t allow hunting or had no deer taken on their land.

Over the past 15 years or so, Andy Zepp of the Finger Lakes Land Trust said that his organization has begun to accommodate more hunters on its 200some properties spread over 12 counties.

The FLLT issues free hunting permits to resident and non-resident hunters alike, with a number based on the site’s characteristics. Managing the program “is frankly a lot of work,” Zepp said, but is undertaken because land management is the trust’s mission.

“This is much bigger than individual landholding entities like Cornell or the land trust,” Zepp said. “There are thousands and thousands of acres of private property and deer move around.

“Hunters new to the area needed to do a lot of legwork before the season to secure access to private properties,” LaMere said. “I know this frustrated a lot of hunters from outside the area, but the fact that they had a hard time finding places to hunt was the reason we needed to extend the hunting season and increase the bag limit in the first place.”

The survey said that in the second year of the DMFA, only a quarter of hunters took more than one deer. Over half who T

extensive areas, and the preferred foods for deer is not regenerating in any significant numbers.”

Landowners aren’t so receptive to hunters using their land because of “a couple of bad individuals,” Edwards said.

“If you represent the fraternity of believers in sport and gun ownership and [hunt] in a proper way, you’ve accomplished a good task. If you act like a good ole boy redneck and disgrace the fraternity, then shame on you.”

“Everyone knows about some deaths that occur because people were shot somewhere,” Edwards continued. “More people die in car accidents. People hear about illegal trespassing and say ‘I’m going to close my land and not allow any hunters on it anymore.’ People don’t do it just willynilly. I don’t have high hopes for increasing hunter participation.” • o v e m b e r

Veterans Day

Parade This Sunday To Honor the Fallen

O

ur area’s military veterans will be honored on this Sunday, Nov. 8, when the 96th annual Tompkins County Veterans Day parade steps off at 2 p.m. on Titus Avenue.

Paraders will be led up Cayuga Street and then west to Veterans of Foreign Wars post 961 on State Street by local Patriot Guard Riders, motorcyclists whom attend the funerals of fallen service members— the organization was initially formed in Kansas in 2005 to drown out Westboro Baptist Church protests.

The parade lineup will feature lots of military groups, including Cornell’s ROTC unit, along with Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts, and some special musical guests, according to co-organizer Phyllis Hall. The musicians—bagpipers, fifers, and drummers prominent among them—will stick around to play at the VFW while parade-goers munch on some after-march refreshments like hot dogs and chili, Hall said.

One of the new musical groups marching this year is the Finger Lakes Fife and Drum Corps, Ithaca’s new corps organized by Tanya and John Morrisett.

sidewalk surface (tipping over patrons in their chairs), people ended up kicking the mulch all over the place. The Flexipave product has been used in front of all the restaurants in that block and also across East Seneca Street around Collegetown Bagels.

“Due to the high pedestrian traffic in these areas, the mulched pits were really not working out,” Johnson said. “People walked in the pits, which compacted the mulch, and the mulch ended up scattered on the sidewalk too. The uneven surfaces became tripping hazards. Metal tree grates are very expensive—they can be thousands

of dollars each—and do not provide a good walking surface, so we needed to look for a different solution.”

Johnson said the city considered using bricks or other small pavers, but they require maintenance to keep them in place. They decided that the Flexipave product—which is a registered trademark for Environmental Paving Solution’s product—seemed well suited to the city because it should not require very much maintenance and will provide a safe walking surface that still allows water to filter into the tree pit area.

Grace described the process of putting down the resin-aggregate mixture. “They put a ring around the tree and fill it with loose material—no resin—and then

surround that with the mixture, take out the ring and cover the surface immediately round the tree,” she said. “That way the tree doesn’t have so much to push against as it grows.”

Flexipave has also been used on the trees on North Tioga Street near the downtown post office. Grace would like to see it used elsewhere around the city—further up East State Street from the Commons and down West State Street— but it is a matter of finding the money.

“The cost for our project was based on the quantity of work to be done,” said Kent Johnson, an engineer for the City of Ithaca, “so larger projects might cost less per square foot and smaller projects might cost more per square foot. For our

The pits on North Aurora Street are larger.

“The funding came from two existing construction projects that are proximate to the tree pits,” said Johnson. “The tree pits done on the Commons and along [North] Aurora Street used funding still available from the Commons reconstruction project, and the tree pits along [North] Tioga Street used funding from the Seneca Street garage rehabilitation project.”

Melding Mind, Body, & Spirit Tai Chi can improve balance and decrease Pain

T

ai chi is a martial art, but of course you never strike anyone. Instead it is at once a form of exercise and a moving meditation. “The muscles stretch and relax,” said Jane Edwards, an instructor at the Taoist Tai Chi Society of Ithaca.

“It involves the mind, body, and spirit. You focus on movement in the here and now.”

If this sounds something like what you have heard about yoga, Edwards acknowledges some similarities. “Yoga is also about the mind and body,” she said, “but with tai chi you are on your feet all the time, constantly shifting. There is no holding of positions.”

Unlike yoga there is no focus on breathing. “It happens naturally,” said Edwards. “Your diaphragm moves against your lungs and your breathing naturally becomes deeper as you move. Breathing becomes easier.”

Tai chi has been found to be very helpful for people with balance issues related to multiple sclerosis, arthritis, fibromyalgia, and Parkinson’s disease. It works on your nervous and circulatory systems.

Edwards said that medical studies have begun to recommend the practice of tai chi, although she stressed it is “not an end all and be all.”

“It is a subtle flow,” said the instructor.

“You are exercising everything. It is good for people of all ages, but seniors seem to be the most grateful because they feel the biggest change.”

Edwards said that teenagers usually do not do well in a tai chi class because their powers of concentration are not strong.

“After age 18,” she said, “you are integrated enough, and your emotions are in balance.”

That said, the practice is helpful to people over a broad spectrum of ages and the intensity of it can vary accordingly.

Edwards herself has been practicing tai chi for the last 35 years. She recently met a 90 year old woman who began to recover feeling in her extremities after just a few weeks of practice.

The connection to the mind is not to be ignored. “People open up at different rates,” said Edwards. “The way we are reared, we suppress our emotions. The

release can be frightening. I’ve been present on a couple of dramatic occasions, but mostly it is more subtle. As the body feels more flexible, the mind does too.” She said that some people are unconsciously afraid of letting go and have to take a break from practice.

She worries about younger people when she sees them constantly hunched over their phones and computer screens in inert postures and at the other end of the spectrum engaged in extreme sports.

These both represent stresses to the body,

Edwards said, and tai chai is a good “smoother over.”

Edwards recently returned from a meeting at Greek Peak organized by the Family Medical Center of Syracuse. She and other instructors demonstrated tai chi for professionals whose focus is the management of chronic diseases. She learned there that doctors are now being compensated for recommending preventative practices to their patients.

In her classes she has encountered people with chronic pain from injuries and disease who have benefited from the practice. “I met someone,” Edwards said, “with a hip injury who was told by her doctor, ‘Come back and see me when you can’t stand the pain anymore.’ She never went back to her doctor.”

She also knows a construction worker who broke most of the bones in his body in an accident and was full of pins. He achieved much better movement through tai chi and a dimunition of pain, and he is now an instructor at the Ithaca chapter of the Taoist Tai Chi Society.

Paul’s team of dispatchers and drivers are recruited, interviewed, scrutinized, trained, and supervised. After Ithaca Police Department scrutinizes their histories, they obtain a taxi license.

Arlo is singing it again, on a tour that is taking him all over the country and will bring him to the State Theatre Nov. 11.

Ithaca Times: You go years without playing “Alice,” and you don’t play it for your own Thanksgiving celebration with your kids, even though so many people do. How do you feel about singing it again?

Arlo Guthrie: Entertainers have always had to have multiple personalities, which in most other people would qualify as a disorder.

But to me, because our mothers were acquainted, Arlo is a lifelong friend (and sometimes like the brother I never wanted).

Maybe that’s why he agreed to this interview— he’s not doing many. At 68, he’s trying to save his voice for the road. So, a couple of weeks ago, we had this email chat. He didn’t always answer what I asked, skillfully avoiding whether his granddaughter Serena, who

You generally don’t want to live or even be around a performer for long periods of time, unless you’re one yourself—they can be a little ‘off ’ when pretending to be normal.

That other self is not only playing onstage, but on your sound system, TV, or coming out of your phone. That’s not the person I live with in my house, and evidently, not in yours either.

IT: You said the song started out as a story

of crazy circumstances. When did you realize you would have to record it? And how did the movie come about?

AG: Sometime in late 1966 or early 1967 the song was basically finished, and I played “Alice’s Restaurant” wherever I went. I did a couple of performances with a guy named Bob Fass, on WBAI Radio in NYC, which were recorded. And they played it as part of their fundraising efforts. You know, “when we reach our goal, we’ll play it again.” After a while they kept playing it until they got even more donations to stop playing it. At that point, I realized “Alice’s Restaurant’ needed to be recorded in a real studio. It came out as a real record in November of 1967. [Director] Arthur Penn, who lived in Stockbridge, heard the recording and began making the film the following year.

He is the one who got the characters to play themselves, including me.

IT: How hard was it to re-learn the song? How did you decide what other songs to put in the show?

AG: It took a few days to relearn the timing for this current tour. It was easier than I thought. But the show was taking a toll on my voice, so I had to cut some of the songs. I asked my daughter, Sarah Lee, to come help me out on the road by opening the shows. She’s been doing great out here, and people are loving her performances. And it saves my voice by not having to do quite so much.

IT: You are using video screens for the tour. I know they were your son Abe’s idea.

You’ve dug out a lot of old photos of you and your family, including your late wife Jackie. You also have a great video for “The Motorcycle Song.”

AG: We wanted a screen, to be able to use the animated film of “The Motorcycle Song.”

Once we had it, we thought we might as well use it for other things, and Abe has been adding to it as the tour has progressed. He’s done an amazing job, but he always does.

exploring the inside story on an 80’s film company

A

ustralian filmmaker Mark Hartley has found his niche making cool documentaries exploring strange crannies and crooks of the world of cinema, films like Not Quite Hollywood: The Wild, Untold Story of Ozploitation! (2008) and Machete Maidens Unleashed! (2010).

Hartley has topped himself with his latest film, Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films.

Back in the ‘80s days of VHS, you knew that any cassette with the Cannon Films logo would be goofy and sleazy in equal measure. There were the two Chucks, Bronson and Norris, grinding out sequels to Death Wish and Missing in Action; The

Last American Virgin, the meanest slob comedy made in the wake of Animal House; and literally hundreds of other titles.

The title of Hartley’s doc comes from Cannon’s Breakin’ 2: Electric Boogaloo, the sequel to 1984’s Breakin’, the first film released to capitalize on the emergence of break-dancing. Like all of the production stories in the film, we learn that Cannon was in competition with a rival breakdance movie at Orion Pictures. “We must beat Beat Street!” cried Cannon co-founder Menahem Golan, and the company went from no idea what to make to shooting in three weeks. They lucked into performers Shabba Doo and Boogaloo Shrimp, and

the first film made $56 million on a budget of $1 million.

Cannon founders Golan and Yoram Globus produced movies like sausages, and if Hartley’s film is to be believed, they were better at salesmanship than they were at quality control. When the odd film of actual quality came out, like Andrei Konchalovsky’s Runaway Electric Boogaloo: The WIld, Untold Story of Cannon FIlms (Photo Provided) Train (1985) or John Frankenheimer’s 52 Hartley’s film is worth seeing just for Pickup (1986), they seemed more like the priceless anecdote of Golan pitching accidents. Most of Golan’s films were a project to Clyde the orangutan, hot off seriously bugnuts, but like Roger Corman, two movies starring Clint Eastwood. Author approaches the oneness of all things

o enter William Douglas Horden’s world, which one can experience with his new book In the Oneness of Time: The Education of a Diviner (Larson Publications, 253 pages), is to become part of a non-linear experience that seems to owe more to intuition than to logic.

Short autobiographical chapters follow each other in no obvious chronological progression. This is intentional.

“It’s to uproot the reader from the sense there’s a linear narrative,” Horden explained. “When we’re going through our lives, it seems so chaotic and difficult to understand why we made the decisions we did. But look back on it, and it seems like a well-orchestrated play. We try to establish a narrative that makes sense, and that has some benefit because it grounds us in some way that’s socially functional.

But it’s a disservice to us. The de-centering of the life story is essential. In the book I try to talk about myself as little as possible, because my training from the beginning was, ‘This isn’t about you! You’re one cell in the body, one idea in the mind.’ I’m seeing myself like a blade of grass in a field of grass.”

Even without the explanation, the book is a pleasant read, each brief chapter an anecdote, an allegory, a little jewel of truth gained along the way. At 19, Horden encountered I Ching master Khigh Alx Dhiegh and studied with him; this was the same year he began work as a counselor for troubled youth and met the woman who became his wife.

For 20 years, Horden and his wife ran a shelter for abused children, an experience which in itself must have confirmed him in the idea that much of life makes no conventionally logical sense.

At the same time, he was immersed in the many-thousand-year-old tradition of divination, practiced by ancient and indigenous cultures around the world.

“There are still living traditions that sensitize their practitioners to the spiritual causes and effects that are hidden from the five senses,” he said. “So if we look at that as the broad definition of divination, I distinguish it as, ‘original mind views nature differently from the modern mind.’

Modern mind is biased toward a more mechanical view of the world, which is, by the way, starting to change with quantum mechanics and relativity. That has begun to change the way the modern mind can appreciate the Great Mysteries.”

A diviner, as Horden uses the term, is one who consults an oracle—in his case, the I Ching—using it as a vehicle for understanding the deeper meanings in a query. “I don’t want a pinpointed question.

I want a cloud of questions,” he said. “Let’s be as approximate as possible; let’s dance

around this for a while and talk about all the things that surround you at this time.

Divination is really much more about an emotional connection to one’s invisible half. I’m an animist. It’s the oldest religion on the planet. Every indigenous culture and every ancient culture began as animist religion, meaning the belief that all matter

has spirit. All things are connected, and they have intelligence.”

I Ching hexagrams, diagrams arrived at by the thoughtful tossing of coins or sticks, appear to be arrived at by chance.

“But when the results come out, it doesn’t appear to be chance at all. That, in essence, is what divination is about,” Horden said.

“There are times we try to suss out how these trends and tendencies are going for the future. Those are all based on hidden seeds, hidden water. What is it that’s below the surface?

“My teacher said the I Ching is extremely valuable as a tool for the two primary goals people have, their secret goals: magic, because you simply can’t do it and not deal with the fact that something magical has just happened; the other goal is transcendence and

enlightenment. The mind becomes quiet; the diviner is essentially a listener.”

Horden will be giving a talk and book signing at Buffalo Street Books Nov. 12 at 5 p.m., and one before that at Wisdom’s Goldenrod Center for Philosophic Studies on Nov. 8 at 4 p.m. •

Dylan, Over and Over

Remembering the folk punk once again

his Friday, The Cutting Edge goes public, the latest edition of Bob Dylan’s official bootleg series. The singer/songwriter’s much-lauded era of 1965-66 is in the spotlight, a season filled with remarkable achievements.

This Friday also marks the 50th anniversary of Dylan bringing folk and rock to Ithaca via Cornell University.

Michael Turback headed out on the town on Nov. 6, 1965, fully expecting to take in Dylan’s entire concert at Barton Hall.

“Two of my housemates and I had dates. After attending a football game [Cornell beat Brown, 4121] we took the girls to Sunnyside Restaurant,” he remembered. “We had to wait to be seated, and dinner took so long that by the time we got to Barton we had missed Dylan’s entire first set.”

Turback, a 1966 Cornell graduate and author of Finger Lakes Uncorked: Day Trips and Weekend Getaways in Upstate New York, missed half the concert, but the 71-year-old remembered Dylan’s impact.

“In an unconventional singing voice, the Dylan of that era said things that needed to be said, things that made us think, question, and act,” Turback recalled. “He was an agitator and troublemaker, and we loved him for it.”

Robert Mark Alter, another Cornell graduate (1967), also took in the show.

“I went with a girl from Texas named Carol—she wore cowboy boots—and Barton Hall was packed,” said Alter, 69, a psychotherapist. “I was a junior. I was too high from the excitement of seeing Dylan to remember anything else.”

When Dylan and The Hawks (his band then—who later became The Band) arrived in Ithaca, America was in absolute peril. John F. Kennedy’s assassination on a Dallas street in broad daylight had happened less than two years earlier. The summer of 1964 had seen three civil rights workers in their 20s—James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner—murdered in Mississippi. Schwerner was a 1961 Cornell graduate.

Some eight months before Dylan played Cornell, Malcolm X was gunned down in New York City. The Vietnam War was raging. Within three years, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy were violently snatched away— and the singer Dion captured the zeitgeist with “Abraham, Martin, and John.”

The magazine was devoted to “Those Who Count Most with the College Rebels.”

Dylan, 24, at fame’s pinnacle— though not a single book had been penned about him—had recently encountered cheers and boos in his summer dust-up at the Newport Folk Festival.

Bruce Dancis, a 17-year-old freshman at Cornell at the time of Dylan’s

Barton Hall show, was blown away by Dylan’s performance of “Desolation Row.” The singer’s memorization of all those lyrics wasn’t too shabby either.

“There was no hostility, and I don’t recall any boos,” said Dancis. “I thought the crowd was very supportive.”

Dancis, the author of Resister: A Story of Protest and Prison during the Vietnam War (Cornell University Press, 2014), remembered expectations.

“Me and my friends were into Dylan, and the anti-war movement, and we were waiting with baited breath for him to say something, but he never did,” recalled Dancis. The political took a backseat in Dylan’s lyrics, he said, but allusions were still there in songs like “It’s Alright, Ma (I’m Only Bleeding)” and “Tombstone Blues.”

As an alienated young radical, “Ballad of a Thin Man” held great appeal for Dancis, as it critiqued straight society and nicely expressed the generation gap: “Dylan captured that like no one did.”

Fifty years after his November 1965 concert at Cornell, a 74-year-old Dylan is currently touring Europe. As he takes the stage on Friday in Amsterdam, his new release The Cutting Edge will provide a snapshot of a fascinating era—an era that an audience at Cornell witnessed half a century ago. •

your children. I know that it’s important to you that your kids, and theirs, are all musical, but everyone seems pretty laid back about it and sort of builds it around other aspects of their lives. What do you attribute that to? How did you get lucky enough to have such great offspring?

AG: When I begin talking about all the offspring in this family who know how to play music, and are good entertainers, I realize how impossible it is to try to distill it into a short interview. But they’re out there, and they’re doing things.

I love it.

IT: It has been a rough couple of years for you, losing people to whom you were close, including Pete Seeger. He was not only a friend of your dad’s; you also performed with him for so many years. He was better than anyone else I’ve known at engaging an audience. He even got me singing. What is the best of him that’s rubbed off on you?

AG: Pete is alive and well in what I was able to absorb from knowing and working with him for over 50 years. I feel him every time I look out on an audience singing along with me.

IT: People know you as a singer, but you are also an extremely talented photographer, and writer.

AG: I have some photos in a gallery in Taos, New Mexico, which is such an artistic community. I’m honored they keep asking for more stuff. If I can ever get out of this

tour bus long enough to use the cameras, there’ll be more coming. I have been taking pictures since I was a little kid, and I’ve come to love the digital age in that regard. I spend hours and hours going down the road and playing with pictures on the computer.

It’s medicinal. I’ll probably get around to doing a book of photographs at some point, but I’m working on a more balanced collection.

There’s all kinds of stuff— landscapes, architecture, women, children, and wild animals. So I’m always looking for the good “light” or the right “story” or the next “model” or whatever… It keeps me busy.

IT: You’ve recently published some children’s books. Mooses Come Walking was published some time ago, with Alice Brock, the Alice from “Alice’s Restaurant,” doing the illustrations. But you have some new stuff. And I have to ask, do you ever think you will write an autobiography?

AG: I’ve done five books for children— the latest one is called Monsters and is being printed here in the Berkshires. It

may be out by the time you are reading this. I absolutely love writing for little kids. And if I live long enough to write an autobiography, I’ll enjoy that too. But I’m waiting for it to have a good ending.

IT: You keep a very active Facebook page; do you think social media and folk music are a good mix?

AG: Folk music is social media. It always was.

IT: Do you still do the big Thanksgiving dinner in Trinity Church each year?

Tell me about the church from “Alice’s Restaurant,” why you bought it, and how it is a community treasure now—as the Guthrie Center.

AG: I love the old church—what a fabulous piece of architecture, and so much of my personal history is intertwined with it. I created our not-for-profit foundations, which are housed there, out of a desire to help save the world in our own small way.

We have dozens of wonderful volunteers who are willing and able to make a positive difference in the community. They are the larger extension of our family. The things we do are too numerous to go into here, but it’s online for anyone who’s interested, at guthriecenter.org IT Finally, are there things left that you still want to accomplish? Do you have a bucket list?

AG: Aside from just wanting a more peaceful world, and a more joyful civilization—to lay in the sun for a couple of weeks, with a good drink, and a nice breeze—no. •

Being a survivor, the platypus must wade through many natural hindrances. He makes a life out of it, and Pope hopes one can find the metaphor through her work. The woodcut prints on display are dynamic, rich with color, and just plain fun to look at!

At this extension, people of the western world get a unique opportunity to study Tibetan Buddhism in an authentic and original monastic setting. The original Namgyal Monastery was founded in 16th-century Tibet by the second Dali Lama, Gendun Gyatso. Since the beginning of its inception, monks have assisted the Dali Lama in numerous religious, political, and ritual acts, acting as a stronghold for the leader. ince starting eight years ago, Ithaca Underground has become a vital part of Ithaca’s independent music community. Less heralded but also important have been their show posters and other graphic art. This Friday Gallery Night, from 5 to 8 p.m., IU will be holding their first-ever sale of posters at the Tompkins County Workers Center (at 115 E. State St., above Autumn Leaves Books.)

Ithaca Times: What is IU? How, when, why did it start? What is its mission?

Ithaca Underground: Ithaca Underground is a 501(c) 3 not-for-profit dedicated to providing an inclusive, allages, DIY music and arts community to the Ithaca area. It was founded in 2007

by Jayme Peck, who wanted to see more diverse and local bands and provide them with places to play. In 2008 the reins were handed to Bubba Crumrine, who has worked to build it into the volunteer-driven organization it is now.

IT: How is graphic art part of the mission? Has it been a strong part since the beginning or has it become more important?

IU: IU has always used graphic art to promote our shows; it has also been a great way for community members to get involved if they aren’t musicians or performers themselves. Their contribution is vital. Around 2009 we

Since then, we’ve strived to find and encourage a variety of local artists, helping them build and show their skills.

Quite a few of our artists went on to study art in college (or are about to). This is our first time working with Ithaca’s First Friday event, and we’re very excited to be a part of it.

IT: Who are some of the major artists?

IU: All of our artists are important to us. Before we had such a large volunteer pool, most of the artwork was done by Bubba himself and Melisa Casano. A few musicians that we worked with early on, such as Isabel Reidy and Corey Fox Mahaney, began creating posters for us. Now, we have about a dozen or so artists we regularly work with, whose work range from digital to ink to watercolor, including Esmé Saccuccimorano, Aaron Goldstein, Elizabeth Kaiser, Weston Czerkies, and Jackson Quinn Gray.

IT: Why this sale now? Is this the first such event?

IU: Ithaca Underground’s existence has become extensive enough by now that we’ve gathered quite an archive of event posters. We’ve also seen a new wave of volunteers and crowd-members who are curious about our history. While sifting through

IT: How do you see this in relation to other visual arts in Ithaca?

IU: Ithaca has not just one thriving art scene, but many pockets of art scenes. We have numerous galleries showing local work, we have a multitude of stores selling locally crafted art, we have this wonderful First Friday event—we even have a local government that will commission street art for our city. This is yet another opportunity to show that work defined as “fine art” is not the only respectable, positive art to be enjoyed. •

On this day of celebration the veteran’s of America will be honored and thanked for their unbeliavable sacrifices. Master of Ceromonies and professor emeritus Art Ostranger will lead a service featuring the Presentation of the Colors, performances by the IC Brass Choir and IC VolCes, and a presentation by Larry DeGrief, U.S. Navy, Retired. The event is an important and special one, and a chance to show your appreciation for our dedicated and brave veterans.

Petter Ericson Stakke, the founder and sometimes sole member of the East London band Alberta Cross, presents songs that dive towards the spirit of psych and folk bands from the 70’s. The music is both present, and of the past. Stakke keeps running this project through the roads of the world, and no matter who’s backing him, you can be sure to expect an energetic and real performance. Opening up for Norah Jones on this night doesn’t seem as strange as it sounds.
