Blacked out: Vandals paint over the Black Lives Matter mural

P

lain Street drivers and joggers noticed something out of the usual while following their Sunday morning routines — Ithaca’s first and only Black Lives Matter street mural was defaced.

The word “BLACK” on the Plain Street mural was completely painted over in black paint, residents and passersby noticed on Sunday. It’s still unclear why the mural was defaced or who did it.

Three vandals were caught on home video defacing the Black Lives Matter street mural at approximately 3:30 a.m. on Sunday. The three vandals wore hoods and caps to conceal their identities and used black paint to cover the lettering that had been painted by community members several weeks earlier.

The mural, located between Cayuga Street and Green Street, was organized by Black Hands Universal Founder Harry Smith, Black Girl Alchemist and MBK with support from Southside Community Center, Greater Ithaca Activities Center and several local artists.

Local families came together to paint each of the letters by hand with unique designs that recognized Black culture and the diversity within the Black community.

Very soon after notice of the defacement spread, community members gathered on Plain Street to repaint the missing word. Several quotes from Black historical figures had also been painted over.

The defacement was referenced during weekly Sunday protesters during the 2 o’clock rally. One protest organizer said that while walking to the rally she’d noticed the mural. continued on page 7

Budget cuts threaten social services funding amid calls for more outreach

I

n a year that saw the economy tanked by the COVID-19 pandemic, securing funding for the county outreach workers in Ithaca was a concern. At last month’s Downtown Ithaca Alliance (DIA) meeting there was even a presentation about the loss of funding for the positions, which focus on providing disadvantaged populations with services that could help them either short- or long-term. This comes at a time when movements to reallocate funding from police departments to social services is at an all-time high.

The two positions are funded by five different groups — the City of Ithaca, Tompkins County, DIA, Cayuga Medical Center and Ithaca Renting.

At the DIA meeting, it was stated that the county had not

budgeted the $60,000 they contributed last year. For the 2020 fiscal year, the county had $20,000 included for the position in its base (target) budget, plus an over target request (OTR) for an additional $25,000. Then, another OTR was made for an extra $15,000.

This was all included in the recommended budget created

by County Administrator Jason Molino.

For the 2021 fiscal year, Molino will not be requesting the OTR money for the position, and the $20,000 is not included in the base budget.

“It’s been a successful program, and really it just came down to a variety of different issues in the budget,” Molino said. “Including not knowing yet what the city and DIA are going to do with their funding share.”

However, this does not mean the program won’t still get its funding, according to Tompkins County legislator Anna Kelles. She echoed Molino, and said that due to budget constraints, Molino couldn’t include the money in the base budget and risk the other parties not contributing. But, she explained, the legislature ultimately decides the budget, and legislators can recommend their own OTR that then has to be approved by the majority..

“I think it is an extremely important program and extremely successful, and I have personally put in an OTR for it a week or two ago,” she said.

Requests that are approved for the budget are paid for through the county’s reserve, meaning the county is careful with what it approves. Kelles said the legislature has received much community feedback expressing the importance and success of the program, and while she said she can’t speak for her colleagues and can’t guarantee anything, the benefit of the program has not gone unnoticed.

“I think there’s a recognition that it has been an effective program,” she said. “Unequivocally I am a supporter of this program. I think there’s a general consensus, and I am positive about the outlook for this program.”

ncumbent Sen. Tom O’Mara (R) faced off with challenger Leslie Danks Burke (D) Oct 1 in a debate that ran the gamut from systemic racism to property taxes. The virtual debate was streamed via Zoom, and moderated by Alexandra Cirone

Danks Burke stated that there needs to be an increase in support for addiction services, mental health services and education, but that it doesn’t necessarily need to come out of the police budget.

“The police need to be equipped to do the job right,”

and Sabrina Karim, both assistant professors of government and faculty fellows at Cornell’s Institute of Politics and Global Affairs.

One of the first questions the candidates faced was the issue of police funding, with moderators asking Danks Burke and O’Mara if they support reallocating funds from law enforcement to other services, as well as what role they envision the state playing in police reform.

The candidates both stated they did not support removing funding, though their answers differed from there. O’Mara called for more support for law enforcement to ensure they have the appropriate resources to do their jobs.

“We have certainly seen incidents across the country, and right here in Rochester, New York that cause alarm about the treatment of individuals by police, but that is far and few between,” he said. “We need to respect our police and fund them appropriately so they can continue to do their jobs.”

In the same vein, the candidates were asked if they believe institutional racism exists. O’Mara didn’t dispute the reality of racism, but said he doesn’t believe it’s systemic.

“There’s certainly racism at all levels, but I don’t believe it’s institutional or systemic,” he said. “There are things that need to be addressed, but I don’t believe that all incidents are racially motivated. Some, maybe, but some may just be an abuse of power. I’ve seen bad cops, they exist, but by and large our law enforcement does a great job.”

Danks Burke, on the other hand, disagreed completely.

“In our 244 years of existence we have strived over and over to reach the ideal that we put forth in our constitution, that all are created equal…

Over the years we have had to include other groups who were systemically disenfranchised from the get-go. Our rules need to live up to that ideal, and right now they don’t. We can see that very clearly. Black

people are killed by police 3.5 times more often than white people — that’s a fact. Black people have a shorter life expectancy than white people — that’s a fact…We need to hold folks accountable for the rules they put in place and undo those rules.”

As the pandemic has devastated the economy at every level, the candidates spoke about their plans to raise state revenue. Danks Burke is in

favor of making sure taxes are being spread fairly among the wealthy to prevent a raise in tax for the average person.

“I want to see those tax burdens whacked in half in some places by making folks who currently don’t carry their weight, the billionaires who don’t pay any tax at all effectively, make them carry their fair share,” she said.

O’Mara emphasized the importance of industry.

“It’s the overburdened tax structure as a whole that has held the economy back,” he said. “I was responsible for removing the franchise tax from the manufacturers because I believe that’s the base for the economy to grow.”

Danks Burke and O’Mara, both attorneys, were also asked if they thought state senators holding full-time jobs aside from their positions in the legislature was a conflict of interest. O’Mara said he thought

[New York has] the strongest ethics laws in the United States.”

Danks Burke didn’t disagree on principle, but did attack O’Mara directly for his position as a partner at Barclay Damon law firm.

“I do not believe that a senator should be allowed to be a senator and an attorney at a lobbying firm,” she said about O’Mara. “He’s a lawyer that represents corporations that have business before the senate.”

The debate finished by giving candidates the chance to evaluate President Donald Trump and Vice President Joe Biden’s performances in that week’s earlier presidential debate with one word each.

Danks Burke described Trump as “childish” and Biden as “tolerant.” As for O’Mara, he only needed a single word: “Unpresidential. For both of them.”

HEATING UP

HeatSmart gets push to extend warmth and AC cross-state

P

rogram Director of HeatSmart Tompkins, Lisa Marshall, recently received a $200,000 grant from New York State Energy and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

HeatSmart Tompkins’ plans to reduce the carbon footprint of New York state are secured thanks to the grant, which will allow them to continue their work for two more years.

Ninety percent of homes in New York are fueled with fossil fuels, but Marshall wants more people to have heat pumps.

“It’s just a great opportunity to be able to continue to move the work forward for two more years, so we are really happy,” Marshall said. “If people don’t know about heat pumps then

they don’t know the cost savings, the comfort and the climate benefits of heat pumps.”

HeatSmart Tompkins has already begun reaching out to people who are engaged in climate solutions and climate change. With this two-year grant, Marshall said she would like to venture into the air conditioning market. With summers getting hotter and hotter each year, she said many people in the region have begun to invest in air conditioning.

“The climate crisis, in a way, is helping us here because nobody used to need air conditioning in this area.... The best and cheapest air conditioning are heat pumps and people are putting them in just for air

SUNY Cortland to pause 14 days due to COVID cases

S

UNY Cortland announced on Monday, Oct. 5, that it will temporarily suspend in-person classes, transitioning to online learning for a 14-day period starting Oct. 7 due to a rise in its COVID cases.

With 101 cases, SUNY Cortland has met the 100case threshold that requires educational institutions to transition to remote learning under New York State Department of Health guidance. The university said that many of the recorded cases “are coming from off-campus students.”

"Now that SUNY Cortland must pause and shift to remote learning, the university must redouble its efforts to stabilize and contain the virus on campus,” said State University New York Chancellor Jim Malatras.

“It’s up to the entire campus community to come together and bend the curve so that every student has the chance

to enjoy their campus experience.”

If cases stabilize and students comply with safety measures, the Cortland County Department of Health may authorize the resumption of in-person learning.

State guidelines do not require on-campus residential housing to close for the two-week period. Residential facilities will remain open and students will be permitted to stay on campus for a temporary two-week shift to remote learning to prevent further spread of the virus. Students may be required to find other accommodations if the health department requires the school to continue virtually for the duration of the semester, but that call depends on the university’s ability to stabilize its spread.

Marshall’s goal is for more people who use heat pumps for their air conditioning to invest a little extra money and use these pumps for their source of heat as well. She said that she’s hoping to even be able to educate people who don’t believe in climate change in the process, and set them on a path toward curbing their individual carbon footprint. “[People] could save so much money if they replace that propane boiler or furnace with a heat pump.” But two obstacles still remain: recognition and understanding. Marshall said word of mouth is a key in communicating the importance of heat pumps.

“We need to get better at reaching out to different civic organizations, community leaders and all different demographics in Tompkins and Chemung County…” Marshall said.

According to Marshall, the state grant has allowed the

two-week window, which began on Sept. 26 and runs through Oct. 9. Athletics and Greek Life were preemptively suspended indefinitely on Sept.

13 and will remain suspended, according to the university.

The school said it has conducted 3,189 COVID-19 tests since the start of the semester — there are just under 7,000 students enrolled at SUNY Cortland. Students who have contracted the virus or who may have been exposed to the virus are required to quarantine or isolate on campus. The university said it has adequate space for these students, and trained university staff routinely check in on them throughout the day to ensure that their needs are being met.

According to NYSDOH guidance, once a campus passes the 100-case mark or 5 percent of campus population threshold, the campus must convert all campus dining and food service options to takeout/delivery; deliver all classes through remote learning, but may continue to conduct inperson clinical, laboratory etc., in consultation with the local health department; suspend in-person athletics, extracur-

With the grant, the focus is to improve Tompkins and Chemung County first and foremost, with special emphasis on Lansing. Marshall sees no need to expand further because NYSERDA covers more counties in New York. “We are very happy to see that NYSERDA has now funded some other clean heating and cooling communities,” Marshall said.

“My dream is that HeatSmart won’t exist 10 years from now because we’ll have been so successful in our mission that we don’t need to,” Marshall said. “We’ve been the innovator for HeatSmart and all of New York and, actually, all of the country. People have been looking to us for our creative ideas and we want to continue to be the innovative leaders and forge a path to make this work easier and more satisfying for everybody.”

SUNY schools have mostly fared well during the pandemic. SUNY Oneonta was forced to move entirely online in September following one of the worst COVID outbreaks in New York state, and SUNY Oswego has just returned from a two-week pause after stabilizing its COVID cases. The SUNY schools have conducted over 140,000 tests on its more than 424,000 students to date.

“Riding was very freeing,” he said. “Getting unplugged and moving through nature allowed me to live in the moment.”

At 17 he began downhill bike racing.

“We would take a chair lift to the top of the ski slopes and race down,” he remembered.

Over the past 18 years, Wilson has attended renowned bicycle institutes in California and Colorado while enhancing his expertise as a certified bike mechanic, and in 2012, Wilson met his life partner, Alissa Hull, in Vermont.

Hull and Wilson shared a deep appreciation for the outdoors and adventure.

By St e ph e n P. Bu r k e o many mundane habits, routines, and occurrences have changed due to pandemic situations that few (not considering, in this light discussion, the many serious ones) stand out as noteworthy anymore.

Perhaps, like me, you have more than once looked around for your mask only to realize you’re wearing it. This week I went to the dentist (welcome back, Doc K. and crew, after months shut down), and after the hygienist tilted my chair back she suggested it would be easier to proceed if I removed the mask.

Some things are so minor and happen so infrequently that now, when they don’t, you don’t mind. Last week I went to the auto supply store for motor oil and antifreeze in preparation for a road trip (a rarity in itself: I haven’t left Ithaca, nor even been on a highway, since the pandemic began), and when I paid in cash, the clerk said he didn’t have the right coins to make change. I said it was okay as long as he had the right bills.

But there’s something you do only once a year, max (i.e., if you do it at all), but now you can’t and might mind, or at least note: blowing out the candles on your birthday cake.

It’s a childish practice, when you think about it, but actually that’s a reason to miss it. Many silly things we do as kids (jumping in puddles, skipping, pushing friends into bushes) we give up fairly early as adults, at least when sober. But blowing out birthday candles persists.

The odds are roughly even that you have had your first pandemic birthday already. Mine comes this week, which is maybe why this topic comes to mind.

Ordinarily I would go to my favorite Ithaca restaurant, where I have gone for maybe a dozen birthdays over the years, and maybe six dozen times beyond that.

I might in fact go this week, but it might be a little dismal. It will at least be different. When the place first reopened two months or so ago I tried to go with a group of six, but it was too many people for restricted seating. Any party, even a birthday party, has to be small these days.

I will miss the extended company and the hugs and kisses, which are missed generally in these viral times, but most

lamentably on special occasions.

On the logistical side I guess I will miss the preprandial drink at the bar, a nicety I don’t indulge in regularly, but do annually on my birthday, to celebrate life, good fortune, and my mother’s labor(s).

My mother occasionally drank a gin and tonic, so that’s what I have, in her honor: also, as a traditionally warmweather drink, to mark the changing of seasons once my birthday rolls around.

One can make a gin and tonic at home, of course, but it’s not the same as at one’s favorite joint, mixed by a skilled specialist amidst a cheery crowd. I like the touches of a cocktail napkin and a tumbler heavier than any glass in my cabinet. The ice is different, too: professional ice, in odd, chunky sizes.

Back to those candles and kids: it’s hard to imagine children growing up without this birthday component.

Something will have to take its place, or else how does one make a wish?

It’s an important question, as there’s much to wish for, even if just a return to the normalcy adults remember and kids might not know, at least for a while.

Maybe we will have “new normals,” as the (new) usage has it, and who knows what that might mean, but the most important aspects will be health and safety.

And back to car trips: this week I exited Ithaca for the first time in seven months, for a family event where I met someone new, a daughter born to a nephew of mine and his wife in April, toward the start of the pandemic, but enough into it to matter.

The fact that she arrived safely in a largely locked-down hospital, and (with her mother) got out without incident, is as important a wish as one could hope to have fulfilled.

A typical birthday wish this year might simply be that one survives and thrives as best one can, along with all friends and loved ones.

Every day is someone’s birthday, and a rough estimate for Tompkins County is that there are 300 birthdays a day. That means there are plenty of good wishes to share.

He suggested I try it out in the nearby parking lot. When I mentioned I had a small car, parked far away, Mason said he would walk the bike to the car with me, and he would fit it in.

And so, he did.

Every day I thank my lucky stars I met Mason, who is as dear as he is an expert.

Each day I learn a little bit more about biking. Each day I ride a little bit further.

And now I have a new friend, and a bike mechanic. Recently I ran into Mason and he told me how to easily convert my road and trail bike into an exercise bike at little expense.”

Re: Committee votes to remove ‘white settlers’ monument "Caucasians" are people from the Caucusus mountains -- Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia, for example. I wouldn't use that word to refer to anyone else, it was misused to mean "Europeans" based on debunked racist 19th-century theories.

We certainly have plenty of accurate monuments to European-descended settlers around here. The names of Renwick Heights, Stewart Park, Green Street, Cass Park, Belle Sherman, none of these are changing.

We should get rid of the inaccurate and bogus monuments (the County Historian says this one doesn't even get the first European-descended settlers right).

In August, while the mural was still being erected, Harry Smith was questioned about the likelihood of the mural being defaced, he responded, “if that happens, we’ll be right back out to repaint it.”

After Sunday’s rally, attendees marched to the Plain Street mural to help repaint the symbol. Over fifty people gathered along the block to replace what had been removed from the mural.

This is the first time the Plain St. mural has been defaced. In August, a Black Lives Matter mural, located on Green Street, was defaced twice within the week of its erection. Around the City various BLM graffiti has been defaced and repainted to say All Lives Matter.

More locals head outdoors for vacation

By Arleigh Rodgers hen Emma Renner, a graduate student at Cornell University, wanted to travel during the summer, she entered the outdoors rather than a hotel lobby.

Camping during the pandemic has grown in popularity among people like Renner, who said she has enjoyed the activity since her freshman year. It has also become a favored vacation activity for new campers, she said.

But this newfound interest has its consequences. Renner said she observed a sharp uptick among hikers at the places she camped this summer, with trail heads unusually packed by 6 a.m. Many of these visitors are amateur campers, she said.

“There are so many more inexperienced people who don't have the right gear, who aren't leaving at the right time to do hikes, who aren't dealing with their food correctly when they camp,” Renner said. “I've just been looking for free, primitive [campsites] that maybe you hike in a little bit too.”

Caroline Bodd, a research associate at the Adirondack Council who graduated from Cornell University in 2019, said that as part of her job this fall, she works to measure public perception of and manage foot traffic at the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks by surveying hikers at the High Peaks trailheads. She said the increase in campers and hikers has led to more search-andrescue missions for groups that were unequipped to endure a long camping trip. These rescue missions ranged from

groups who forgot a headlamp to someone who broke their leg.

“It's kind of a mix of good and bad for the park because, obviously, we love having more people here, but it’s also a challenge to educate everybody on how to safely hike and camp,” she said.

Renner said she thinks that because people are less likely to travel to a far destination during a pandemic, they have become interested in what their local community offers instead. Because camping itself is an exclusive, or expensive, hobby, Renner said she hopes the increase among visitors yields more socioeconomic, racial and gender inclusivity. “[Camping has] been a historically middle-to-high-class, white male thing, and so you're not going to think, ‘Oh, I can go survive in the woods,’ … if you don't see people who look like you doing it,” Renner said.

Owen Valdescruz, a senior electrical and computer engineering major at Cornell University, first camped in Ithaca while participating in “Outdoor Odyssey,” a pre-freshman-orientation backpacking trip. Valdescruz was accepted to be a guide for the excursions his sophomore year, though the expeditions did not take place prior to the spring semester due to COVID-19, he said.

For Valdescruz, a typical day of camping includes hiking and paddling with Renner, his girlfriend. The two camped at Cranberry Lake, New York, in July as well as Saranac Lake, New York, and Stowe, Vermont, in August.

Closer to Ithaca, Valdescruz and Renner have camped at Shindagin Hollow State Forest in Brooktondale, New York, and

the Finger Lakes National Forest in Burnett, New York, where Valdescruz has also camped with his five roommates.

In preparation for camping trips, Renner goes to her local Rite Aid weekly for free, self-administered COVID-19 testing. She said she also avoids large gatherings during the week and only camps with her roommate, Valdescruz or other friends who have tested negative recently. When crossing paths with other hikers or campers, she dons a cotton mask.

Bodd said the expectation for campers is to wear a mask when close to others and to keep their distance when not wearing one. The Leave No Trace Seven Principles should also be abided by, something she said she thinks not many new campers or hikers are aware of.

A typical day on a camping trip is long and active, Renner said. Awake at sunrise, Renner makes breakfast, usually oatmeal or leftovers from the previous night, before hiking a mountain or canoeing with Valdescruz. This is an allday affair, finished off with dinner at the campsite.

Valdescruz said that for him, camping is a safe way to adventure outdoors during the pandemic after being inside for so long.

“I just really like being outdoors in nature,” he said. “I feel like it helps a lot with anxiety. … Being at Cornell, being in college in general, is stressful as hell, so being able to leave your problems … behind and just go swimming for a weekend is super relaxing and energizing.”

Nick Bahamonde, a sophomore at Ithaca College, said that backpacking O c to b e r

trips with friends are his way of seeking normalcy during the pandemic. Since the plan for classes at the college shifted from in-person to online in August, Bahamonde said weekend excursions, like one he took the first weekend after classes began, are easier to schedule while living at home in Clarke County, Virginia.

“It was a reset from the summer,” he said. “It was the most normal I felt in the past multiple months because you see other people, and you can talk to them, but it's so easy to stay away from them when you're outside.”

Renner was accepted for an internship with GE Global Research, a program that was intended to begin in June.

She said it was pushed back to August due to COVID-19 but that, as a result, her summer schedule in Ithaca was unexpectedly open, giving her the opportunity to camp more frequently than she thought possible.

Although now working 40 hours per week at GE while living in Troy, New York, as well as completing her school work remotely, Renner said she still prioritizes weekend camping trips. They provide a brief repose from her stressful hours of work in front of a computer throughout the week, she said.

“It's an escape from my internship and from schoolwork,” she said. “It's really important for me, during the weekend, to not just be sitting in my apartment and [...] looking at screens, but also [to] do it in a way that still is safe and not putting anybody's health at risk.”

Ithaca resident creates online resource for runners R hiannon C ol e m an

hen Ian Golden laid out the groundwork for his project the Trails Collective in 2018, it stemmed from a place of frustration at the inefficiency of national trail logs and the inaccessibility of the larger running community that worked in tangent to seemingly ignore the here-and-now needs of local runners. The Trails Collective thus became an online presence for trailrunners in the northeastern region of the United States. It offers accurate information on local trail events, detailed reviews of running gear from experienced runners, an e-shop for purchasing equipment and a forum for runners to connect without the distractions of other social media platforms. Golden describes his site as “the hope and intent to cover trail-running in a regional-oriented model. It’s a way to create an entity that isn’t just for entertainment.”

Golden has strong ties to Ithaca. Attending Ithaca College for his undergraduate and graduate degrees in occupational therapy where he met his now wife and mother of three daughters, his work was only the natural result of his long-time passion for personal health, particularly running. Golden and his wife returned to Ithaca to raise their children, deepening their local roots even more by starting a small business, the Finger Lakes Running Company, which sells outdoor gear and sportswear.

In companionship to the Trails Collective website, much of Golden’s daily work revolves around maintaining the organization’s YouTube channel. The channel, which is active several days a week, features interviews with local runners, gear reviews and a series called the “Weekly Rundown,” which reports on results from local races during the week.

“The YouTube channel ended up being a way to just host the content... rather than trying to store it on our platform,” Golden explains, “So somebody could follow the YouTube channel and that would be it, but there’s more to offer on the Trails Collective site.”

With the onset of the COVID-19 virus, Golden’s small business, like many other local shops in Ithaca, has been financially impacted.

“As we were going into COVID as a scary reality for a lot of businesses and

families,” Golden explains, “there were two friends that did a FundRun to support their running specialty stores up in Rochester. Another friend here, Pete Kresock, had just pulled their model to see if they could use it to support our store. We had a lot of good community support that came out the last day we were open. I was able to keep going even during the shutdown period just doing porch deliveries and phone and email orders. Since we reopened, it’s continued on page 12

IC grad brings artistry to costume department

hen Ainsley Anderson was a student at Ithaca College, she traipsed the halls of the Dillingham Center and sometimes slept overnight in various spots during midterms. Now, Anderson, an instructor in the Department of Theatre Arts, stands in the shoes of the people she once learned from — a jump, she said, that she always thought she’d make.

“When I was a student, I always used to say that I wanted to come back and take Lilly’s, the costume shop manager, job,” she said. “A position opened up where I would be working with Lilly Westbrook — not replacing her — so I got to come back and work with my mentor, which was great. [It’s] a very different dynamic, but I really enjoy it.”

Anderson was part of a nationwide search for the position she has now, a three-year con-

tract with the Department of Theatre Arts. In her opinion, the city and the college have not changed much since she graduated in 2010.

However as a professor, she said she operates more as a community member, and she volunteered with the SPCA of Tompkins County when it was open before the pandemic.

Anderson’s skills lie in millinery, or hatmaking, something she has been able to explore through her work at the college, the Hangar Theatre and Broadway shows like “Frozen.” Her creations range from elegant to elaborate, like some of the headpieces she made for “Spongebob Squarepants: The Broadway Musical.”

Anderson said that after graduating, she was not set on finding a job in New York City because she had never grown up in an environment similar to it. She instead worked on shows in local, smaller theaters like the Hangar, where she worked on the regional premiere of “Kinky Boots.” She said regional theater also appealed to her because of the tight-knit community it creates.

Anderson does not design her pieces, but said she enjoys bringing others’ works to life.

“There's a lot of give-and-take with millinery,” she said. “I have always loved working

in theater because it's sometwhing different every day. That is really important to me, and I am a tactile person, so at the end of the day, being able to hold up what I created I always found really empowering.”

As she did when she was a student, Anderson shares the costume shop in Dillingham with Lilly Westbrook, costume shop manager in the Department of Theatre Arts. She said Anderson’s jump from student to professor is not uncommon — for some, a rite of passage — among graduated theater majors like Anderson, who received a bachelor of arts in costume design.

“They’re my colleagues, they're my peers,” Westbrook said of alums who work at the college after graduating. “[Anderson] brings tremendous skill. She brings tremendous experience. She brings two of us in the room as opposed to one.”

This semester, Anderson is teaching the classes Costume Crafts and Production II, III and IV. Twice a week she is able to access the costume shop on campus and conduct classes virtually with the room as her Zoom backdrop. She said the online semester has been continued on page 12

been pretty good. I am just lucky to be one of the businesses that’s done okay during the COVID period.”

On an even more personal level, Golden and his wife, a healthcare worker, have struggled to find time in their schedules for their children and their passions.

“I have three younger daughters and that, I think, became one of the trickier parts: trying to make schedules work. So we were basically still trying to have to work our full-time work schedules with suddenly no caregivers in the mix.”

And despite all of the hours of work Golden put towards getting the Trails Col-

lective off the ground, he lost time to do what inspired his project in the first place: trail-running. “For some people [...] it was kind of the reverse where they were able to run more and, unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for me. Suddenly trail heads were just getting full and overrun and there was a lot more litter on the trails and the impact was just heavier. But for the business side of things, it was a good thing just because there were more people out and active.”

While much of Golden’s life has revolved around an active lifestyle, one he has maintained since he was a child, Golden finds no purpose in trying to convince others to adopt the same way of life.

“For anyone getting into [running] my advice would be to just be patient,” he said.

“Particularly in the beginning, it’s just hard work. It’s not that fun and it’s easy to do it for a spell and then just stop.”

Golden recognizes the wear it can take on the body and mind to sustain an active habit such as running. He continued, “I think if anyone can find a way to just be consistent and find a time to put it in their schedules then it can take you to some really cool places and you meet some really great people. It’s not about persuasion; it’s just about meeting people where they’re at.”

a challenge, though she has, in response, adapted her classes to be lecture-focused rather than hands-on. She said the inperson classes she taught last academic year fell into the latter category.

“I find I empathize a lot with the students, and that informs my teaching,” she said. “There's an industry-wide shift in theater to stop working ourselves to death... As a student, it’s normal [to work excessively], but now … I'm trying to model some more healthy behavior and some of that is work-life balance, and is setting those limitations on how many hours you’re willing to work. I do try to let that inform how I build my classes.”

Nicolas Gonzalez, a May 2020 graduate of Ithaca College, assisted Anderson with the hats she made for the Japan tour of “Frozen.”

“She trusted me, like, as a student,” he said. “She really cares so much about teaching students and also giving us the best and most diverse education. … A lot of teachers will get stuck in what they do and their way of doing things, and I think … she always looks ahead.”

Catherine Weidner, professor and chair of the Department of Theatre Arts, said that Anderson brings a distinct perspective and expertise in millinery to the college.

“Ainsley, as a teacher, brings the craft to the students as opposed to saying, ‘Here's how you do it,’” Weidner said. “I sat in on a class of Ainsley’s last year, and I felt like I was in high school chemistry. … There's just a level of detail and craft and chemistry and artistry that is exciting to have her as a member of our faculty.”

With theaters closed in New York City for an indefinite amount of time because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Anderson said she misses the opportunity to continue work outside the college.

“You don't get opportunities like you do [...] working in theater, just day-to-day,” she said. “There are so many cool, weird things that you're asked to do.”

Eleven Lakes, A Hundred Memories

ike it did for many people, March of 2020 threw the proverbial monkey wrench into Michaela Brew’s plans. The 2018 Cornell grad (and Ithaca native) was living in Manhattan, working for Capital One, planning to run a marathon and hoping to carve out some time to spend with her parents, Kevin and Vicki Brew (Cornell class of ’77 and ’89 respectively).

Little did Michaela know that by the time she got ready to return to the Big Apple this month, she and her mom would have carved out enough time to achieve an impressive goal, and they have the leg muscles and saddle sores to prove it.

Vicki Brew has been a dedicated cyclist for many years, and I remember being on

a group ride with her in 1986. We rode in a fundraiser and cranked out 166 miles over 3 days, but she embraced longdistance cycling a lot more than I did. She has completed the famous and daunting 100-mile Ride for Life three times and she told me, “I have been riding pretty much my whole adult life.” She was quick to add, “Weather permitting…”

As for Michaela, she shared, “I wasn’t really a big bike enthusiast – that was my mom’s thing – but I had been taking Spin classes in the city and I was supposed to do the NYC Marathon, but that was canceled and I really didn’t have anything to train for.”

The plan for the two Brews to do some riding together took shape, and Michaela

caught a serendipitous break when she went into Cayuga Ski and Cyclery.

“I bought the last road bike they had in my size,” she said, “and I started riding with my mom. The first long ride we did was around Keuka Lake, and that was the longest ride I had ever done. At that point, we hadn’t talked about doing all of them.”

That ride was completed on June 19, and the odometer showed that it was 45.3 miles. Then, on June 28, the pair rode around Skaneateles Lake (40.6 miles), and Michaela learned a lesson on that day.

“I [had] decided to plan our route myself,” she said, “and we ended up on some steep gravel roads. We got lost, had to walk a lot, and that was my least favorite ride.”

On July 3, they rode around Owasco Lake (31.5 miles), and 2 days later they saddled up and did Otisco Lake, which was 20.7 miles. On August 1, the mother/ daughter team doubled up, looping Conesus Lake (18.4 miles) and Hemlock lake (22.5 miles). “That shouldn’t be a Finger Lake,” Vicki huffed. “You can’t see any of the lake on the whole ride. There are killer hills and we had to walk.”

August 8 was another double-up day, as the riders started out by circling Canadice Lake (11.9 miles) and then followed up with a ride around Honeoye Lake (18.1 miles). Vicki called that “a nice kayaking lake, with a large beautiful preserve at one end of the lake.”

A week later on August 15, our intrepid riders looped Canandaigua Lake (42.2 miles), which Vicki calls “a beautiful lake with a boat party area in town.” She added, “We had a huge downpour at the end and we went home soggy.”

Another week passed, and on August 22, Vicki and Michaela tackled Seneca Lake (79.5 miles). In Vicki’s words, “That ride was the most fun of all. Lots of wineries, distilleries, craft beers… It was a hot day, and there are majestic views from everywhere!”

September 26 was the day chosen for the Big One, Cayuga Lake (104 miles), and Vicki said, “It was a beautiful fall day with my girl, [then] she got a flat tire on the west side.” Other troubles presented themselves, as “Michaela scraped her ankle on a guard rail, I got a butt full of nettles and there was a huge headwind all the way home on [the] west side.” That was a wrap: Eleven lakes, 435 miles.

I asked the two women to reflect on their mutual odyssey, and Vicki said, “Seneca Lake was the best – it was an all-around beautiful day in rural New York, and the day we got lost and walked through the woods was the worst part.”

She added, “I loved watching Michaela grow. She went from riding in sneakers to using clip-in pedals to changing her own flat tire!”

In Michaela’s words, “It was definitely a bright spot in having to uproot my life, and I’ll always cherish this unique and challenging experience I got to have with my mom.”

Looking back at Pancho Villa’s complex legacy, looking forward to the best onion rings in America

athy Lee Crane’s fly-on-the-wall documentary “Crossing Columbus” (2020, Polyvinyl Films, 78 mins.) documents the various citizens of border town Columbus, New Mexico, when Mexican riders on horseback cross the line to commemorate Pancho Villa’s 1916 raid.

It’s not a simple, cut-and-dried event.

At a time when we’re attaching warning labels to movies like “Blazing Saddles” and “Gone With the Wind” and re-considering the appropriateness of the Confederate flag, not everyone on both sides of the line sees Pancho Villa as a hero. At least one person in the film calls him a terrorist.

He says that staging a parade with a Villa impersonator is like having an Osama Bin Laden actor as grand marshal for a parade in Manhattan.

Crane’s method of documenting events is to be as inobtrusive as possible. There is no narration, not every Spanish word has been subtitled, and the various townspeople being interviewed are not identi-

fied onscreen, only credited during the end credits. What we get is an intimate, ground-level portrait of life on both sides of the border. For all the ritual, preparation and pomp, which includes dances, a fascinating and elaborately staged parade and the riders saddling up their horses for the big crossover, there is a lot of discussion about what these traditions mean, and if they have as much relevance in the 21st century.

Even within the awesome confines of “stranger than fiction” documentaries, Molly Dworsky and Dave Newberg’s “The Ringmaster” (2019, Capp Bros. Productions, Asteroid and Space Metal Recovery

and 1091 Pictures, 88 min.) is a real lulu.

I mean, stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a 2009 Ithaca College graduate with a gambling addiction named Zachary Capp goes into rehab. When he gets out, he decides to spend his inheritance buying cameras and hiring crew so that he can make a documentary about Larry Lang, a guy who makes the best onion rings in the country.

You know, that old chestnut.

The weird part is that Capp is a chatterbox and a human mood ring, while Lang is the taciturn, quiet type with little to say. Even the crew starts asking if this is a good idea. Like “My Date With Drew,”

this movie is more about the guy making the movie than the intended subject. And so what seeps through around the edges is priceless American kitsch: Lang’s sister Linda is an actress who once hosted a Mother Goose-themed workout video for kids, and yes, we get to see some of it. Nor was I expecting an onion ring tasting in Las Vegas attended by Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons and Eric Singer, three-quarters of KISS. “The Ringmaster” is now available on VOD, and if you’re tired of predictable genre fare, start peeling through the endless layers of this goofy American documentary.

Q&A: Authors focus on Black women in US history

t is possible to explore the diverse history and stories in North America through listening and reading the vast history that makes up our country. However, there is a balance that is being sought out in a new book on Black women’s history, titled “A Black Women’s History of the United States” by historians Daina Ramey Berry and Kali Nicole Gross.

“A Black Women’s History of the United States” seeks to encourage a future search and journey into the history of Black women and their lives.

Recently the Ithaca Times interviewed both authors via the web on their groundbreaking book that covers the wide-ranging history of a people and their stories.

Much has been overlooked about African American women’s contributions to society over time, but can you talk about the unexplored nature of Black

women and their history being set aside for so long?

Daina Ramey Berry/Kali Nicole Gross: Thanks for this question. Although Black women’s history is often excluded from mainstream works of American history, a host of scholars have been documenting and writing about Black women’s experiences in the United States and abroad for decades. In fact, one of the aspects that made writing this survey so daunting was figuring out how to balance and honor that rich legacy of scholarship with all of the new and exciting cuttingedge research into a variety of subjects and themes in African American women’s lives.

This book also celebrates the past as well as the present of the diversity of black women, but can you share how you came to collect and write about the history and stories? Can you talk about how

you came to cover the slave ships during the 1600s, which carried women to slavery, and then moved ahead to more current times with women in politics and fashion?

DRB/KNG: We worked hard to find both original and familiar stories. At first we focused on stories that we hoped readers never knew about, however feedback from scholars early on confirmed that we needed to anchor the book around places, people, and events that general readers

recognized. We were so pleased to start before 1619 with Isabel de Olvera, a free woman of African descent, because of the assumptions people make about [Black people] in early America. As we worked our way through time, we were careful to think about seven guiding themes: travel, motion, [and] migration; violence; activism; labor and entrepreneurship; criminalization and incarceration; art, performance, and creativity; and sexuality and the erotic. We used these themes to shape how we moved forward in history as well as which figures to spotlight.

It seems readers are encouraged to learn more about other Black women’s history and stories. Who are some of the women you wish would be household names, but are not yet?

DRB/KNG: Yes, we definitely wanted our book to be a dynamic entry point for readers to learn about Black women’s lives and histories. To that end, we cite a mix of sources—from rare archival materials to easily accessible documentaries and document readers. We did this in the hope that our intrepid readers might want to learn even more about women such as the female explorer Isabel de Olvera; the Civil War nurse Susie King Taylor; Mrs. Alice Presto, the first Black woman to run for a seat in the Washington state legislature; the pioneering SNCC organizer Ruby Doris Smith Robinson; the award-winning poet and author Gwendolyn Brooks; and Aurelia Browder, the lead plaintiff in Browder v. Gayle, the 1956 case that ended segregated busing in Montgomery, Alabama.

How do you feel the events, stories and lives of the past helped the African American women of different periods in time as they endeavored to move forward? How do you feel it prepares and shapes our society today?

DRB/KNG: Black women’s history is vital because it shines a light on the nation and holds us all accountable to our country’s professed democratic ideals, such as freedom, justice and liberty. But more than this, the various tactics that African American women have used to move past obstacles and make a way for oppressed people offer us important insight into how to continue to work toward a purer rendering of freedom and democracy for all.

Daina Ramey Berry is Oliver H. Radkey Regents’ Professor of History and the incoming chairperson of the history department at the University of Texas at Austin. She is the author and editor of six books, including The Price for their Pound of Flesh: The Value of the Enslaved, from Womb to Grave, in the Building of a Nation.

Kali Nicole Gross is acting Professor of African American Studies at Emory University. She is author of Colored Amazons: Crime, Violence, and Black Women in the City of Brotherly Love, 1880-1910 and Hannah Mary Tabbs and the Disembodied Torso: A Tale Race, Sex, and Violence in America, and co-author with Daina Ramey Berry of A Black Women’s History of the United States.
