Gyms and fitness centers permitted to open Aug. 24

G

overnor Andrew Cuomo announced that New York state gyms and fitness centers will be eligible to reopen starting Aug. 24, so long as they follow the safety guidelines set in place.

Gyms and fitness center operators in Tompkins County are asked to submit their safety plan and Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) certification to the health department for approval; and to schedule an inspection before opening, using the NYS Safety Plan Template. Gyms have been closed since the governor signed his executive order closing all non-essential businesses in March.

“Our local gyms and fitness

facilities are now part of the NYS Phase 4 reopening process and can reopen within the posted guidelines, including for indoor classes. The reopening of these spaces was delayed as COVID-19 has progressed, and we appreciate the patience and adherence to the guidance by gym operators,” Frank Kruppa, Public Health Director stated.

The new guidelines will also apply to standalone fitness sites including: hotel, residential, and office gyms and fitness centers, gyms and fitness centers in higher education institutions, yoga/Pilates/barre studios, boxing/kickboxing gyms, fitness boot camps, CrossFit or other plyometric

As part of their requirements, gyms and fitness centers intent on reopening will be required to have a safety plan in place visibly noticeable at the site, operate in accordance with new guidelines regulating HVAC systems, operate at a 33 percent capacity limit for each given exercise room and supply appropriate face coverings for staff and visitors.

Sept. 2 will mark when all classes will also be allowed to resume, albeit in a limited capacity. However, county governments are permitted to delay the start of indoor exercise classes after Sept. 2, if they deem it necessary. If they resume, all exercise classes will be required to operate by appointment, follow socialdistancing guidelines within the space (under 33 percent capacity) and sanitize the space after each use.

ompkins Consolidated Area Transit (TCAT) announced its new fall route schedule on Monday. As expected, the season’s schedule will come with many pandemic related changes, including the cessation of some old routes and the creation of some new ones. Riders can expect to see changes starting Aug. 30.

In order to accommodate the expected ridership increase associated with Cornell students’ return to Ithaca, TCAT said it has worked to increase its rider capacity to 25, up from 20. Additionally, to ensure bussing efficiency, back up buses will be provided whenever pos-

sible and necessary to accommodate overflow at pedestrian heavy stops.

The buses will also be suspending the Pay What You Can offer they set up at the start of the pandemic and will begin collecting fares on Sept.

“I made my corned beef and brisket, did my dealio; had no issues,” Flynn said. “All to go.

People got their drinks to go.

Some people got a drink while they waited … had a beverage while they waited for their food to come out so they could take it with them. Some people wanted to wait in their car. But we were all socially distant.”

That day, an investigator from the state liquor authority showed up and informed Flynn that he cannot have that many people inside in the bar.

“He goes, ‘Yeah I’m Joe Blow from the New York State Liquor Authority. You can’t have any of these people in here drinking.’ He goes, ‘You have a full bar,’” Flynn said.

“I go, ‘A full bar?’ I go, ‘Are you kidding me?’ It’s Friday afternoon and there’s eight people in my bar. … I willingly brought him back into the kitchen and showed him all the receipts, all the tickets, to every one of the people in the bar at the time waiting on their food to leave.”

According to Executive Order 2020.3, which was issued on March 16, “any restaurant or bar in the state of New York shall cease serving patrons food or beverage on-premises effective at 8 pm on March 16, 2020, and until further notice shall only serve food or beverage for off-premises consumption. Notwithstanding any

provision of the alcohol and beverage control law, a retail on-premises licensee shall be authorized for the duration of this Executive Order to sell alcohol for off-premises consumption, which shall include either take-out or delivery, subject to reasonable limitations set by the State Liquor Authority.”

Flynn said he was not informed about the executive order at the time and therefore had no knowledge of the new guidelines for restaurants and bars.

“It was a misinformed situation,” he said. “The health department never sent their email out to me until the weekend and I was charged on Friday the 20th.”

Any businesses found in violation of regulations related to the virus are charged up to $10,000 per violation. Flynn said an amount like $10,000 would put him out of business.

“It closes my doors,” he said.

“This place will never exist.”

Flynn said he does not have the proper finances to hire a lawyer at the moment and plans on complying with the state, though he has no interest in doing so.

“I don’t have any desire to comply ‑ no desire, zero. But I have a desire to do what I have to do to take care of my family, myself and my customers. So therefore I comply.”

TCAT starting Sun., Aug. 30, will pilot a smaller version Tconnect 77 in the Lansing/ Etna area on weekends in place of routes 74 and 77. (Please note: route 40 serves Groton Mon.-Sun.) Route 10: downtown-toCornell campus service will resume.

Route 13: has been reconfigured with a separate route 13S to serve Aldi, Purity Ice Cream and GreenStar Co-Op’s new location on Cascadilla Street.

Route 15: has been changed to curb the potential for crowding. The southwest shopper has added trips to offer some direct service from downtown to southwest shopping centers, while other trips will continue to serve Titus Towers.

Rural routes to include20, 21, 37, 40, 52, 65, and 67 will serve West Campus at Stewart Ave. @ University Ave. in the

uphill direction and at Baker Flagpole in the downhill direction. This will provide service to West Campus students traveling to and from Central Campus and Tower Road.

Route 75: will not resume.

Route 81: started early on Mon., Aug. 17, andserves ALot traveling southbound and B-Lot traveling northbound.

Route 82: will serve Maplewood Avenue; East Hill Plaza, East Hill Office Building and Tower Road.

Routes 83: will not resume.

Route 84: is a new15-minute service between Cornell and Collegetown. This new route will serve the Breazzano Center at Dryden @ Linden.

Route 90: will offer nightly service every 40 minutes from North Campus, East Avenue, Collegetown, Mitchell Street and East State Street/Martin

Community comes together, paints first Black Lives Matter street mural

C

ommunity members came together on Aug. 22 to paint a Black Lives Matter mural on North Plain St. between Green St. and Seneca St. Painting began at 7 a.m. and continued until nearly 9 p.m.

The Ithaca mural, which follows a string of Black Lives Matter street murals being erected across the country, was conceived by West End local Harry Smith, known better as Harry O. Harry is founder and head of the Black Hands Universal, a local organization that teaches financial literacy, supports mental health needs, effectively addresses the needs of people struggling with addiction and works to provide educational and nutritional opportunities to those who need them. Together with Southside Community Center, GIAC and community artists, the mural was realized.

Harry said that he wanted to see Ithaca get a mural of its own after seeing the pride it created in others around the country. “Everybody had the ability to be proud of having one in their community, and I wanted our community to be proud of having one as well,” he said. “It symbolizes that things could always be better in Ithaca. There’s a mythol-

ogy that systemic injustices don’t go on in Ithaca, but that’s impossible for them not to exist when we operate under the same system as everywhere else; and we’ve been doing a lot of protesting and a lot of marching, hopefully we can connect and this can be the start of healing.”

His thoughts were echoed

by Ms. Phoebe Brown, a recognized Ithaca elder and special guest at the event. “This is really really nice. I love that we’re doing this all over the country, but I want to see some significant equity changes. What I’m looking for this to do is remind people that Black Lives Matter. I want to see it inspire people to do more, to be more, to want to break bread and understand each other’s fight and oppression because what I want to see is changes.”

The mural was loosely designed by Caleb Thomas, founder of Ithaca Murals and Jay Stokes, a popular local muralist whose work can be seen at Southside Community Center. Stokes said the design was meant to ensure that anyone could add what they wanted so long as it was embracing Black positivity.

The duo outlined the design on Friday night after the street was closed off. Stokes said they

received some negative talk as people passed by the night before the big day, but added that the majority of chatter had been positive and supportive.

He said that the mural also has a quality of inviting ownership, which he said was intentional.

“Basically, I just came up with a broad design that anyone could work on if it was laid out. The colors could be red, black [pink, red, yellow, brown, blue] and green; and people can put messages inside the letters,” Stokes. “I like that everyone is able to come in and add their own community flair to it. I want people to come by and take ownership of the mural.”

The mural is the first official Black Lives Mural in Ithaca, and certainly the first one to be constructed via community effort. The location of this mural is also significant as it marks the demarcation between Downtown, West End and Southside.

Each letter of the popularized phrase was designed by local community members on the spot. Originally the mural wasn’t intended to have artwork outside of the individual letters but in true Ithaca fashion, drawing outside the lines became not just for toddlers.

People who were walking by said that the mural, as different as it is from others around the country, truly embodies the Ithaca spirit. However, the message more than that needs A u gu s t

to be highlighted— it’s all these voices coming together to say Black Lives Matter, don’t forget it.

Harolyn Hoard, who recently moved from Pennsylvania to Ithaca to be closer to her family, said she was blown away by the mural. Hoard said she originally interpreted the invitation to “put your… handprint on the street” literally, she never imagined that she would be able to participate to the level she was able to. Hoard brought her brother, niece and grandchild to the mural where they painted the “K” as a family.

"I think it’s a good thing you can do with your family. I’m definitely liking [the mural] and I like that I’m participating instead of sitting on the sidelines.” She said she was glad she got to role model community participation for her granddaughter, who she said wouldn’t have involved herself if she hadn’t seen Hoard do it first.

“As long as I sat on the curb, she’d (her granddaughter) sit there with me.…Participation is everything and this is her community. You want to be able to do something that’s positive and being able to ride down the road and to see this today, tomorrow will make you proud. It’ll definitely make you take care of your own neighborhood.

G l e n n E pps hen I came on staff at the Ithaca Times, I never imagined that I’d be sitting at the helm, as I am today (our publishing day) addressing our expansive, quick-witted and community oriented readers to share my thoughts in anything other than a review here or there.

In fact, a year ago, I never expected for any of you to be my reader, but that just goes to show how much can happen in a year, I suppose.

In a few weeks, I will mark exactly one year since I sat on the stairs of the Ithaca Times after walking in circles and waiting in lines and chatting it up, as I am keen to do, during the 2019 Apple Harvest Festival. With one of my closest friends I looked for a brief escape from the crowds of Apple Fest, and I found the quieter steps of the Ithaca Times, I looked up and thought ‘wouldn’t it be cool to work here one day.”

Well, I’m here and now the real work begins.

As interim Managing Editor for the Ithaca Times, what I have inherited from Matt Butler is an awesome task. It’s replete with demands on time, creativity, conscientiousness, responsibility and all that jazz. And although it’s anxiety-

ridden, it’s what keeps me coming back to this field of work day after day. I’m optimistic about my time here knowing I’ll be able to share that with you.

What intimidates me is having to bear the work before you all each hour, day and week. It’s the artistry of journalism— What will they think? Do they approve?

Was this the right call? But each day that I approve the next day’s newsletter to arrive in your inbox or mark another article as destined for our weekly issue, I feel myself slipping into the groove and growing more comfortable with the rhythm that’s created by you, the reader.

That’s what this job is, essentially. It’s what journalism is, essentially: answering two questions: what do they need to know? And what do they need to know?

Both answers every journalist learns from the reader in time and with time. Hopefully, you need to know the same things I need to know (not always likely, but that would make my job a lot easier). In any case, decoding this sound, the rhythm of Ithaca is something we should all be excited about to pursue. Is it salsa? Is it anjali? Is it breakdance? In all likelihood,

ugust 26, 2020, the publication date of this week’s Ithaca Times, marks the hundredth anniversary of women winning the right to vote in the United States with the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

The amendment took decades to create and enact. It became law in 1920 once it was ratified by two-thirds of the states.

Historically, the Finger Lakes region features prominently in the fight for gender equality in this country. In July, 1848 the first national convention for women’s rights was held in Seneca Falls. The convention was an important development in the campaign for women’s rights. For years women’s groups were active on local levels; the Seneca Falls conference was a pioneering attempt at national planning and organization.

Seneca Falls was a logical location for the convention. Many of its major organizers lived in the area. Elizabeth Cady Stanton had given her first public speech in Seneca Falls years earlier and subsequently moved there from Boston.

Susan B. Anthony lived in Rochester, 50 miles away. Amelia Jenks Bloomer, who introduced them, was born In Homer, New York and moved to Seneca Falls, where she married the owner of the local newspaper and wrote of activist politics.

WIthin a few years she started a newspaper of her own expressly for women.

Central New York was an area of social and political radicalism. It was close enough to New York City, Boston, and Philadelphia to be influenced by their resources and culture, but remote enough to foster new thinking and action in significant ways. With the development of the Erie Canal, the area became less a frontier and more a forefront of ideas and influence.

Many women’s rights campaigners were also active abolitionists. Central New York was an important area in this movement, too, and there were many political and personal links. Two of the most renowned abolitionists, Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass, lived in the area: Tubman in Auburn, 20 miles from Seneca Falls, and Douglass in Rochester.

Both Tubman and Douglass escaped slavery in Maryland and came via the Underground Railroad to upstate New York, where the network for freedom was highly active, and where both became crucial leaders. Tubman repeatedly risked

her freedom and life by personally guiding subjects of slavery from southern states. Douglass harbored hundreds of refugees in his home.

A noted writer and orator, Douglass founded an anti-slavery newspaper, the North Star, in Rochester. He was a speaker at the Seneca Falls convention.

He was an influential proponent, there and elsewhere, of its strongest positions, such as universal suffrage, which was seen as extreme and controversial even by many convention participants.

Even prior to this history, this region had a proclivity for equal rights among its population. Its native people were the Haudenosaunee, inhabitants of much of what became upstate New York, all throughout its central, western, and northern sections.

The economic, social, and political structures of the Haudenosaunee were a model of political cohesion at a time when the fledgling settlements of European incursions were contentious and tenuous. Many historians cite the ideas and practices of the Haudenosaunee as inspirations for U.S. political development in general and the Constitution in particular.

One important aspect of Haudenosaunee life that was shunned rather than emulated by the Europeans was the leadership role of women. The Haudenosaunee were a matrilineal and matriarchal society. Women controlled economic resources and governance in practice and codification.

The rules of gender equality the Haudenosaunee created and held as good sense and sound structure were dismissed by the Europeans for their sharing of rights and power. European warmaking killed off the Haudenosaunee and obliterated their society. But even after their destruction, the legacies of the Haudenosaunee lived on in their lost lands, at least in enough capacity to teach others to aspire to live freely.

History’s lessons are available for our benefit. The abolitionists, suffragists, and other activists from this region learned these lessons, adopted and adapted them, and brought them hence.

The remnants, repercussions, and reasons for struggle are still with us. They remain particularly visible here in upstate New York, although the latter are quite obvious everywhere.

Being a journalist during this time also comes with its own obstacles, not just because of coronavirus, but because of the age we’re in. COVID has undeniably changed our world for the better and worse. It’s given us time to focus on self and society in ways we were too distracted to sit, ponder and speak out

against before, and it’s taken us away from those we love— and in some cases taken them away from us. How do I, as a journalist, share the sober truth of our world in such a time as this? How can I convey the magnitude of the conditions of some human conditions? And how do I do that in Ithaca?

So, I suppose it’s more fitting than any other time that I make my first address to you in our Student Survival Guide. This year was particularly difficult, after all, how does a duck teach a horse to row? But we gave it our best. And I hope that will do for now, until I decode the rhythm of Ithaca

Even with a negative test result initially, they're suggesting that patrons be mindful of the infection time of the virus and continue to monitor their health for up to 14 days.

Simeon’s American Bistro is closed temporarily in order for the facility to be

thoroughly cleaned in the meantime.

“Simeon’s notified their staff right away and is taking all necessary precautions. They reopened for on-site dining in phase four with a thorough plan including requiring staff to wear masks at all times, and are following that plan as they clean their facilities. Staff and close contacts identified by the health department are in quarantine,” said Public Health Director Frank Kruppa. “We’re seeing businesses follow their reopening plans closely, this has been key to stopping the spread of COVID-19 in our community.”

Due to the massive return of Cornell students, Cayuga Health System announced that the sampling site would be closed to the public on Aug. 23 and 24, but will offer a limited number of appointment slots for people who believe they may have been exposed at Simeon's last week.

“The COVID-19 virus continues to be present in our community. Our vigilance and adherence to guidance has kept our numbers low. We are encouraging people to be cautious and continue to consider density, keep distance, wear face coverings, and wash hands well and often to stop the spread of COVID-19,” stated Frank Kruppa, Public Health Director.

Dear Fellow Ithacans

I

am a high schooler living in Ithaca.

Even though I am not yet able to vote this year, I have a request for all young voters: please read this.

I am a volunteer and Field Representative with Leslie Danks Burke’s campaign for New York State Senate in District 58.

Leslie began running for State Senate because she was frustrated with how many of our district’s youth have been forced to flee our communities because they couldn’t find jobs and job security.

Her opponent, Senator Tom O’Mara has not addressed this issue enough, and Danks Burke wants our Southern Tier Finger Lakes region to be a place where young people can grow up and have the opportunity to stay and live with stability.

Leslie says, “It’s not a Democrat problem, it’s not a Republican problem, it’s a leadership in Albany problem. We need someone to go to Albany who’s going to fight for a real seat at the table for the Southern Tier and the Finger Lakes.”

This November, I encourage you to vote Leslie for State Senate because her mission is to fight for our future here in the Southern Tier Finger Lakes region.

This November’s election is particularly important and will require a high youth voter turnout, something that has been too low for too long. This year, that needs to change.

In 2016, only 46.1 percent of 18 to 29-year-olds voted in the November election. This shocking number shows that the majority of young people did not vote.

Why is this the case? Maybe they never learned how to register, or they registered, but never found out where their polling place was. Beyond the logistical setbacks of learning how to vote, I suspect that young voters don’t show up at the polls for a more fundamental reason: they believe that their votes don’t matter.

When students aren’t taught in high school that their vote matters, how can we possibly believe otherwise? When we are raised witnessing elections that were run and decided by old billionaires, how can we believe that our one vote will make a difference? Frankly, seeing this cynicism in my generation worries me, but it’s the same cynicism shared across generations.

In 2016, 43 percent of all registered voters said that their vote wouldn’t make a difference. That cynicism ultimately swayed the election: only 80,000 votes across three states (Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin) made Trump president. That means that only 0.06% of voters decided the biggest national election in the U.S. It couldn’t be clearer: your vote matters.

all starts with young voters. To all of the voters in my generation: register now and vote as early as you possibly can. If we turn out, we can create the world we want to live in. This election, we cannot afford the luxury of being cynical, we need to act.

I am only 15 years old and am too young to vote in this election. That is why it is so important for everyone else who can vote to do so. After all, as George Jean Nathan said, “Bad officials are elected by good citizens who don’t vote.”

Re: County officials answer community questions on school openings While county officials do have responsibilities in public health, county officials should defer to other governments and university authorities re their students, faculty, and staff. School reopening is the responsibility of these institutions, the NY State Regents, and the Commissioner of Education. It is called “comity” and means that one government should not unduly poke its head into an area controlled by another government. That’s a matter of mutual respect that unfortunately is not much observed these days.

thaca’s silent movie connections are lengthy and well-known by this point. While its tenure as one of the focal points of the film industry was relatively brief, historic landmarks remain that either appeared prominently in films at the time, such as Eddy Street Gate at Cornell University, or helped serve as important function centers, like the Wharton Studio Building itself in Stewart Park, which has been converted to the Wharton Studio Museum.

The executive director of the museum, Diana Riesman, has been instrumental in sustaining Ithaca’s silent movie legacy, an effort she’s furthered over the last several years by leading several initiatives aimed at educating and promoting the legacy.

Namely, she’s organized the Ithaca Silent Movie Month since 2012, the youth-aimed Silents Rock! Film Festival since 2017 and the longest-tenured venture, Silent Movies Under the Stars, since 2011, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.

“WSM is working to preserve and celebrate Ithaca's and the region's movie history -- Wharton, Inc. Studio was a bustling motion picture production entity here in Ithaca from 1915 to 1920 -- and to develop the historic Wharton Studio building in Stewart Park into the Wharton Studio Museum and Park Center in collaboration with Friends of Stewart Park and the City of Ithaca,” reads the group’s mission statement. “Wharton Studio Museum has a permanent exhibit in the Tompkins Center for History & Culture focused on Ithaca's role in early American moviemaking, and annually produces multimedia exhibits and programming.”

Under the Stars is going to, predictably, take on a different feeling this year than in its first nine iterations. The coronavirus pandemic has forced events around the country to adapt their practices to maneuver around public gathering restrictions and social distancing rules, and the silent movie event is not exempt.

The Under the Stars event was originally conceived by Josh Teeter in 2011, a state parks worker who now serves as an Environmental Education Supervisor, who brought the idea to Reisman and the Wharton Studio Museum to have an outdoor viewing in Upper Treman Park, where “The Great White Trail” was shot and made in 1917.

“We partnered with New York State Parks and pulled off what became the first Under the Stars event,” Reisman said. “And it was right there, where the movie had

been made, virtually 100 years before, it was quite something.”

Hoping to mark the end of summer each year, Reisman said parking and lighting concerns caused the event to move elsewhere to continue after the initial year. That brought them to Taughannock Park for 2012, where the event is still held today… or, at least, it was.

“Here we are, doing our 10th anniver-

This year, the group is showing a 1925 film called “The Freshman,” starring Harold Lloyd. It’s one of the most widely praised and highly successful silent films of the 1920s. It tells the story of a young, nerdy student willing to go to great lengths to achieve popularity during his introduction to college.

Realizing this, the group spent the last several months pivoting to an online format to still be able to show the event and retain some level of the community that Under the Stars has built during the last decade.

“My whole approach to the pandemic is just turning lemons into lemonade,” Ries-

“We wanted to do something as sort of an homage to the students, but now it’s a bit more of a complicated story,” Reisman said, laughing. “I don’t know if they’re coming back or not, I don’t know if it’s ironic now or not. I don’t mean it to be ironic, but it’s a very good film and Harold Lloyd is up there with Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton as being considered one of the most influential comedians in silent film.”

The Cloud Chamber performance group will be scoring and performing during the show, accompanying the on-screen silent film. The performance will be produced in association with the State Theatre, which has been honing its virtual skills with weekly showings of the Summer Concert Series online, the annual series of music performances that are normally held on the Ithaca Commons, centered on Bernie Milton Pavilion. Looking on the bright side, Riesman said that there’s at least a chance that the different viewing options will open more avenues for people to view the show who would normally be left out, either because of timing or convenience.

“In a way, there’s a potential for us to reach a lot of people who we couldn’t normally reach because they don’t live in the area and they can’t drive to Taughannock,” Riesman said. “So it’s a nice opportunity to celebrate the 10th anniversary, show a wonderful film in ‘The Freshman,’ which I think is Harold Lloyd’s most successful film, and we’re just looking forward to it.”

Broadcasting and streaming the movie, even with musical accompaniment, won’t be an extraordinarily hard thing to pull off, particularly considering the help she’ll be receiving from the State Theatre staff.

“This is really not more complicated to produce,”she said. “What we’re really missing is that in-person feel. It’s so wonderful, for the last nine years when I walk around and the sun starts to go down, people are staking out their little spot on the grass, talking to people who are there and who come every year. I don’t think it’s technically any more challenging.”

While the technical aspects might not be as difficult to overcome as they appear, Riesman sounds as if she’s enduring the same internal struggle that everyone who runs an events-based organization is: the risk is simply too much to ignore or forego, particularly with so much uncertainty surrounding the next few weeks in terms of the influx of students to the area and the subsequent reopening of Cornell.

“Everything for us moving forward, at least through the new year, is going to be virtual,” Riesman said. “I’ve contemplated small events in person, and I just don’t feel comfortable doing it. I don’t want that risk, I don’t want Wharton Studio to decide to have an in-person event and then, God forbid, something happens. This is just the safer way to go.”

The event will stream live Saturday, August 29th at 8pm via Facebook, YouTube, and Wharton Studio Museum and The State Theatre’s websites.

A win-win situation

ome of Ithaca’s most popular and successful fundraising events also double as interesting sports stories, and it has been a pleasure to provide coverage. Women Swimmin’, Pud’s Run, numerous golf tournaments, Walk-aThons and, of course, the Ride for Life.

I have watched the Ride for Life grow from a novel idea to a powerhouse of a fundraiser since its inception in 1999, and I have really enjoyed watching people push themselves past what they perceived as their limitations and help others while doing so.

When the Ride for Life was launched, the name of the agency was AIDS Work.

It is now the Southern Tier AIDS Program (STAP), and Mary Kaminsky, STAP’s Director of Development, was kind enough to talk to me about this year’s event. According to her, “We all wondered, ‘What are we going to do?’ The COVID situation made it necessary to cancel all our other fundraising events, and since everyone’s safety is of utmost importance, we decided to make the Ride for Life a virtual event.”

She added, “We then decided that since it is a virtual event, people can do anything,

anywhere, anytime, and it has been great to see how people have decided to participate!”

Some of those imaginative game plans include a rider named John Zisk, who has recruited sponsors to support his effort to ride circuits along the coast of Maine.

Another rider – Lee Holman – will ride around each of the Finger Lakes over the course of the 4-week event, and Adam Brumberg will crank out 317 miles. I asked Mary how he settled on such an odd number, and she replied, “The Ride for Life gives riders an opportunity to choose from five distances – 14 miles, 42, 69, 90 and 102 miles, and 317 miles is the sum total.” Got it…

There is a team from the local First Baptist Church that is riding a collective 6,000 miles to replicate the distance from New York to California and back, and a motivated participant named Barbara Fry will be walking upwards of 300 miles over the course of the event (which runs from August 12th to September 12th), and a team branding itself as “The Holy Walkamoles” (Mary Kaminsky’s team!)

There is also a dedicated Retriever/ Pit Bull rescue dog named Whiskey who has convinced his human companion, Hannah Van Ostrand (the STAP Program Assistant), to get involved with the event, and their ongoing walks are adding to the effort while strengthening their bond and all six of their legs.

I asked Mary if the perception that issues related to HIV/AIDS are “yester-

day’s news,” and she was grateful for the opportunity to address such an inaccurate view. “HIV is not over, not yet,” she offered. “Prevention efforts are now at the forefront, and we are doing a variety of things to help those we serve. We are offering free, at-home testing and we have a syringe exchange program.” She continued, “The COVID crisis has caused an uptick in ODs, and we are doing our best to reach people where they are. We are doing our best to be creative in how we provide services, as people are quite isolated now.

In our Binghamton office, we have moved the food pantry to the front porch, and it’s truly amazing how flexible our staff has been in meeting people’s needs. Our Care Managers are doing a lot to help people who are homeless, as a lot of staying healthy involves hand washing and staying clean, and it is quite difficult to do many of the things you need to do to take care of yourself when you don’t have a home.”

As stated, the virtual event is underway until September 12th, so there is still plenty of time to combine your creativity and your desire to contribute to the well-being of some of your neighbors who might be facing difficult times. The uncertainty and depression brought on by the COVID crisis has elevated the level of risk for many people, and STAP is one of the agencies doing whatever it can to make a difference.

hree Cornell University juniors are trying to help their fellow students stay connected during the coronavirus outbreak as the vast majorit had to return to their hometowns when the school decided to hold online classes and told students they could no longer live in on-campus housing without a special waiver.

explained, but Quarantine Buddy is aimed at introducing two strangers.

“While these platforms are great for staying connected to people you already know, our platform is about introducing people who don’t already know each other,” Brickman said.

“If one doesn’t have anyone to reach out to or is feeling lonely, these platforms won’t solve their problem as they are not conducive to meeting new people.”

In that way, it’s almost closer akin to Tinder or Hinge, though this is more meant to guide people through the quarantine with supporters instead of romantic partners.

The site explains that its matching algorithm will take a person’s test answers and compare them to others that have been received from other participants. It will then match two people together who the algorithm determines are a good fit for each other, and send the two a text message introduction, forming the “quaranteam.” The site lists some common purposes for a quarantine buddy as someone to do Zoom yoga with via video, someone to talk to in times of need or just someone to rant to about the persistent boredom.

“Get to know your quaranteammate,” the site touts. “You two will make it through this uncertain time together.”

The school announced that it would be moving classes online for students in midMarch, progressively increasing restrictions until it moved up its timeline and told students they’d have to leave their on-campus housing.

They were soon joined by Ithaca College, Tompkins Cortland Community College and dozens of others across the country as the nation essentially shut down to avoid spreading the disease. But even after all this has passed, the team behind Quarantine Buddy intends to keep the app going while potentially slightly pivoting its target audience.

“We are confident that introductions are shifting to completely online, and that this period of time is just exposing and emphasizing that,” Brickman said. “When this is all said and done, we plan on using QB to introduce people all around the world. Some long term use cases include matching together patients who are diagnosed with the same disease, academics who study similar topics, or two people who both want to pick up the same skill.”

It’s a spinoff of an earlier app they developed, called Zing, which would help students with similar interests find each other during the first few weeks of school, when it can be tough to make friends in a new environment.

Jenni Pitts, Isaksen’s potential to-be housemate, was also discouraged, as well as unsurprised, by the college’s announcement.

She said she thought it was the best decision in the interest of students’ and faculty’s health and safety. Like Isaksen, Pitts said she thinks moving to Ithaca will allow her room for comfort and structure because she will be surrounded by students — how it would have been on campus.

As members of the volleyball team, Pitts and Isaksen would also be able to socially distance with their upperclassmen teammates who signed leases months previously.

“After dealing with the spring semester and my summer classes online in my house, I think that I just need a change of scenery,” Pitts said. “I think that would be very good for my mental health. …

Even for academics, I think that I would love to have people near me that are going through the same thing I am, like scheduling things for classes and trying to get workouts in.”

For Jason Langford, a sophomore at the college, online classes were already a reality before Collado’s Aug. 18 announcement. His home state, Georgia, first appeared on Governor Andrew Cuomo’s required quarantine list in June and has not been removed since. As a result, Langford wouldn’t have been able to live or study on campus if the college had reopened, per Collado’s email on July 17.

Of the college’s decision to shift to remote learning for another semester, Langford said he was not shocked but disheartened, even as he knew an in-person semester was regardless beyond his grasp.

“I knew it was coming eventually, I just didn't know when,” he said. “Since I'm in one of the restricted states I was

n a letter to students on Aug. 18, Ithaca College President Shirley Collado announced a fully-online fall semester for students at the college due to the coronavirus. While some lamented the lost inperson semester and braced for another at home, others quickly sought housing in Ithaca with the friends they would have otherwise roomed with on campus.

Grace Isaksen, a sophomore at the college, said she was initially disappointed when she heard the announcement from Collado. She said she wanted to spend time with her recently formed friend group, something she’d missed during the spring. As an athletic training major, Isaksen also said she was concerned about another round of virtual classes, which did not provide the same level of engagement as inperson courses.

“I had just met all these great new people,” she said. “I had to spend one semester away from them in the spring, and I was really looking forward to going back in the fall. … A lot of [athletic training] classes are in the clinic, and I'm just a little worried about having to do them online again.”

In her announcement, Collado stated that residence halls will be closed and the majority of classes will be online, with the exception of some health science majors, including senior Occupation Therapy majors and junior and senior athletic training majors.

“I am writing to assure you that while the delivery of our student experience will be different in the fall, it will be no less meaningful,” stated the email. “We remain committed to delivering opportunities for student engagement in innovative ways that ensure our connections as members of the Ithaca College community remain strong, despite our physical distance.”

But some students are not as convinced.

Isaksen said that living at home in Glennville, New York was not an ideal academic setting, as both her parents and three sisters were working from home. Moving to an off campus apartment with three other friends would provide her more freedom and space to focus on her work.

“There's a lot going on [at home],” she said.

“It's [about] being around [my friends] because

already going to be online anyway, so this was just a final acknowledgement of that.”

While living at home with a trio of dachshunds at his heels, Langford has used a spare room in his home for an art studio. He has also been working at a recently reopened bookstore — a nerve-wracking endeavor that he said he has been

especially cautious of because of the uncertainty of working during a pandemic.

Langford said that because his living situation in Atlanta has benefitted and supported him well, as well, as Georgia being on Cuomo’s list, he will not be seeking an offcampus apartment in Ithaca. His opinion of students moving back to the city varies, he said, and it depends on their own living situations as well.

“If their home life is not great, then I think that they should be able to [move back],” he said. “If they don't have a reliable connection to the internet either, or they don't have a good working technology situation, then they should be allowed to move to a situation where that's possible. But if they just want to because they want to … then I don't know if it's quite necessary to cram Ithaca with that many people.”

Emily Dorn, a sophomore at the college, also said she will not be returning to Ithaca.

She said she wants to visit the city to see her friends while renting an Airbnb. She said she would not consider signing a lease because of the possibility of also needing to pay for room and board should Ithaca host an inperson spring semester — she also knows three family friends who have died of COVID-19.

As Cornell University’s reopens and news of large student parties ripple through Ithaca, Pitts said she is concerned about the devastating impacts students will have on the community if they are careless about mask wearing and social distancing, both of which she said she plans to do if she moves to Ithaca.

“I think that it's foolish, and I think that it makes people look either uninformed and uneducated or just arrogant and very self-centered when they do things like that,” she said.

“I would have loved to go back to school, but in all honesty, I really don't think that everyone would be willing to abide by the rules that are meant to keep us safe.”

Tips and e-class Tricks

s the school year approaches, dorm rooms and living rooms will turn into lecture halls and classrooms. So how can you make the most of your online classes?

The following are some tips to help you conquer the school year, wherever your classroom ends up being.

Take a break between classes… away from your computer. Online classes mean staring at a computer screen a lot more than a typical school year, so much so that many people have been reporting Zoom fatigue. If you have a break between your classes, turn off your laptop for a few minutes and walk around instead of surfing the web. It might help you feel more refreshed for your next class.

Form virtual study groups. With online classes, it’s a lot harder to ask the person sitting next to you for help understanding what the teacher is saying. Forming study groups can make it more fun to go through the material and help you stay connected with your classmates.

Also, take it from me, study groups can be a good

way to remind each other when assignments are due and make sure everyone is turning them in on the correct date. After losing contact with a lot of my classmates last semester, I found out halfway through one class that I was turning in my assignments a week later than when I was supposed to (luckily the professor was very understanding).

Watch pre-recorded lectures at the same time each day. While you may not want to wake up for your pre-recorded 8 a.m., having a set schedule to watch class videos can help you stay on top of the material and not get behind. If you (understandably) don’t want to watch your early morning classes during the time they normally meet, pick another time during the day that works for you.

Don’t be afraid to ask a question! One of my professors mentioned how teaching online

classes felt a lot like a real-life version of Dora the Explorer: she would ask a question, pause, stare at the screen, and end up answering her own question. One benefit of online classes is that you can privately message the instructor your question instead of having to raise your hand in front of the entire class.

Create a space you enjoy working in.

Finding a productive and quiet workspace is important, but it’s also important that you create a workspace that you enjoy being in. Take some time to decorate your workspace in a way that makes you happy, whether it’s putting some plants on your desk, hanging some pictures of friends and family on the wall, or (if your school allows it) even working outside when the weather is nice.

Cornell student cooks up following on TikTok Arle igh R o dge rs

Jeremy said much of his interest and skills in cooking and creating recipes derive from home, where family meals are frequent and inspiration reaches generations back. His grandmother taught him traditional Jewish dishes like challah, one of his favorite items to bake.

Leo Scheck, one of Jeremy’s four brothers, said he recalls visiting his grandparents’ house on the weekends for family gatherings, where they would make food like handmade pizza dough together.

“I feel like a lot of our family traditions in history have been centered around food,” Leo said. “I have distinct memories of going to my grandparents house every weekend for a barbecue, when we were younger, and the cousins would be there. … I feel like every major family gathering was centered around very specific dishes that our grandparents or our parents would make.”

The backdrop of his videos vary from a lakeside vacation to his backyard at home, but now back at Cornell, Jeremy films in his off campus apartment. The aesthetic of his videos — usually a combination of background music, a voiceover that coaches viewers through a recipe and a heavy focus on the food itself — remains the same.

Jeremy’s first sponsored video was in partnership with Feel Good Voting, an organization seeking to increase voter turnout from 18–30 year-olds in the upcoming 2020 election. Jeremy’s interest in politics partially rests in food and education, two topics he said he believes are inextricably linked together.

“I'm really interested in the intersection of cooking, food, education and policy,” he said. “You can't really separate cooking with a lot of political issues that we have, with food insecurity and food deserts. There's just a lot that's directly linked to politics and … that ties into health and nutrition.”

Although he receives sponsorship offers frequently, Jeremy said he would only take a brand deal if it was paid work and aligned with his personal ethos, an aspect of which Deborah said she was proud.

“I think he’d probably, at some point, like to have it be financially useful to him, but he's very careful about potential brands and things that he would sign on to because he doesn't want to cheapen his image,” she said. “He wants to be true to himself, and I'm proud of that approach.”

TikTok is Jeremy’s largest following, though his Instagram counterpart has approximately 54,900 followers. If the app were to be banned, which Leo said he’s not entirely sure will actually happen, Jeremy has shared in some of his videos that all his recipes will continue to be posted on Collegetown Kitchen and After School Bakery, as well as his Instagram.

Scheck said that because he published both websites before quarantine, he felt he had already laid the foundation for his TikTok account — and perhaps soon his future without it.

“I felt like on one hand, it was unplanned, but on the other hand I kind of worked towards it my whole life,” he said.

hen Cornell University closed its campus in March due to the coronavirus pandemic, like many students, junior Jeremy Scheck left Ithaca to live at home in Washington, DC. But what might have been a tedious few months in quarantine blossomed into a thriving TikTok account — now sitting comfortably at 1.2 million followers.

TikTok is a social networking/video-sharing app where users can create and share short-form videos of themselves performing dance moves, comedy, talent/music-videos. The videos are range anywhere from three to sixty seconds in length. As of August, the application has claimed over a billion users worldwide and 500 million active monthly users. Recently, Donald Trump threatened to ban the app if negotiations with Microsoft or another American company fail; the company is based in China.

In bright lighting and occasionally a different language, Scheck teaches his followers how to make homemade pasta, charts his experiments with sourdough bread, and ices birthday cake.

Scheck began his TikTok prior to the pandemic, but he credits his follower growth to the video where he made spicy rigatoni.

This is partially because TikTok’s official account liked Scheck’s video, and unlike the majority of accounts on the app, TikTok’s liked videos — 32 in total — are public. The app’s “For You” page also likely assisted in the video’s popularity. The feature is designed to rapidly share new content from users even if someone doesn’t follow them, meaning Scheck’s spicy rigatoni made its way around the app without himself having a large following. The video has since garnered approximately 5 million views.

“It was weird because I'm in quarantine, I'm barely leaving the house,” he said. “After 100,000 followers all the numbers kind of seemed fake. It's hard to even imagine that.

Hopefully it will be beneficial career wise, but it wasn't something that I set out to do for validation or clout. I was bored!”

Before becoming a virtual chef, Scheck maintained two blogs geared toward students seeking recipes and tricks for their home or college-bound kitchens. When he was a sophomore in high school, Scheck created After School Bakery, presenting sweet treats and how to make them from scratch. His other website, the namesake of Cornell’s stomping grounds, The Collegetown Kitchen offers groundwork recipes tailored to complement taste with timeliness. Both websites are marked by a TikTok tab, linking Scheck’s account.

Debora Scheck, Jeremy’s mother, said she did not know what to expect of TikTok or from his account. However, she said the timing was perfect for Jeremy because in quarantine he had more free time.

“I just thought [TikTok] was kind of a way for young people and teenagers to pass time when they were bored at first,” she said. “It was the perfect storm because here he was during quarantine with not much going on, and his main interests of cooking and photography, … all that came together.”

Hotel School lecturer Cheryl Stanley teaching her popular Introduction to Wines in pre-covid Times has announced that it will go to an entirely online fall semester, a significant change from its earlier stance where in-person classes would begin in October.

That means there will likely be more need for solutions like those discovered by students in Dance Composition at Ithaca College, who were sent home due to the coronavirus pandemic in March but found ways to make it work from their permanent residences, highlighted by bathroom-based choreography.

“My authenticity and creativity were challenged and expanded by the new opportunities presented by the virtual class setup,” Lucia Vecchio said of the class in an Ithaca College story from the spring.

Cornell University, which has given its undergraduate students and professors the choice to attend classes online, is having some similar issues. One of the more popular classes every year involves wine tasting, aimed at refining one’s taste in wines, a class that many seniors take as a fun course that will both challenge them and, frankly, allow them to drink wine. That will change this semester though, according to an email sent out by Cheryl Stanley, a lecturer in the Hotel School at Cornell.

switch out of the course after Stanley made the announcement.

“I was looking forward to it for a while, it was supposed to be one of those rewarding courses after the previous three years of working really hard, I hadn’t really taken many fun classes,” Krisch said. “When they said that the biggest component of the class, which was wine tasting, wouldn’t be offered, I figured that I can get the same experience going to wine tasting rooms in the Finger Lakes. We were lucky in that sense, but still kind of disappointing.”

She was taking the class more for the benefit of being able to intelligently discuss wines and understand pairings as opposed to just the drinking aspects. There was an additional fee to actually taste wines during the class, Krisch said, but she said it seemed like a good deal regardless. The changes to the course led her to not take it, but she said that actually worked out well, since she will graduate early and has been trying to take less credits during her final semester at school. But for others, she said it would likely be a let-down and subtract significantly from the class experience.

“I can imagine for a lot of other students, who were looking to have that release or that excitement, even just about day drinking, it would suck,” Krisch said.

hough this year’s Better Newspaper Contest was moved back several months and held virtually because of the coronavirus pandemic’s gathering restrictions, the Ithaca Times was still awarded handsomely by the New York Press Association.

the Year category for the whole state, with judges highlighting three cover stories specifically: “Slumlords on Notice,” (Nov. 13, 2019) “Southside Strife” (Aug. 9, 2019) and “Trouble in the Classroom” (June 5, 2019).

In their comments, the judges highlighted the closeness of the competition.

“This category was extremely close,” the judges wrote. “The reporter’s work tackled difficult subjects and brought into the open stories of mismanagement, incompetence and recovery. Strong writing, as well as great topics, made this the second-place winner—it was just edged out of first place.”

The lone first place prize was for Charley Githler’s bimonthly column “Surrounded

by Reality,” published every other week in the Ithaca Times’ editorial section. Specifically, the judges highlighted Githler’s signature biting humor in two columns in particular: “The Taxman Cometh,” from March 6, 2019 and “Just a Note” from July 10, 2019.

“Sharp commentary on local spin on larger context is hilarious when morphed into a tax form, thank you notes and multiple answer quiz,” the judges noted.

covered Michael Ingiosi’s path from his death bed to becoming a peer advocate at the Cayuga Addiction Rehabilitation Services facility in Ithaca.

“Nicely written with a consistent focus on the central subject, this story should resonate with readers--addicts, recovering drug abusers, families affected by addictions, the general community in which this subject resides, and the professionals who confront this problem . . . and those who cause it, which itself should be a feature focus,” the judges wrote of the story.

The work done by graphic designer Marshall Hopkins and photographer Casey Martin was also awarded by the NYPA. Their collaboration on the front cover for the Winter Times issue placed third in the Best Special Section Cover category for Division 2.

“Nice winter photo draws a reader in,” the judges said of the cover. “I like the overlapping font at the top — colorful and eye-catching. Nice way to display a lot of text in the corner with your headlines and page numbers — stays simple and not overpowering with tons of text.”

Hopkins received several more awards for his work during the year. In the Best Front Page category, several of his designs earned him a second place finish in Division 3, as well as an award for his graphic illustrations.

“Excellent use of bold photography; clear and strong fonts; nice use of index in block formation along bottom of pages — all make these front pages consistent. They definitely make a statement,” the judges commented.

They also offered praise for Hopkins’ illustrations, which usually accompany the results of the weekly Ithaca Times poll, and garnered him a third place finish in Division 3.

“These great original illustrations really add character to the sidebars,” they wrote. “The quality of drawings and the technique of the coloring is very consistent with each. Very impressive.”

Finally, Hopkins received a third place award in Division 3 for Best Small Space Ad, which the judges called “eye-catching.”

Additionally, former reporter Edwin J. Viera received an honorable mention for his work curating and publishing Ithaca Times Daily, the paper’s daily e-mail newsletter.

“Accessible, current and useful,” they said. “An appealing summary of the day.”

Viera and Butler also shared an award for Best Public Service of Non-Profit Special Section for the annual Give Local issue highlighting under-known non-profit organizations in Ithaca.

“Very special section highlighting the mission and good works of non-profits that fly under the radar or are largely unknown—great service to the community and the service providers. Novel concept— great work.”

ut this one won’t be anything like what audiences have seen in the past or even three months ago, Buggeln said he has to keep in mind the changing and unstable circumstances under which he’s planning the season. “We’re planning for the uncertainty,” he said.

This season will explore new forms of live theatre performance and offer audiences the chance to experience live theatre in unconventional ways— in-sociallydistant-person, virtually and via audio.

This season’s show list will feature the same new, and cutting-edge work audiences are used to seeing at the Cherry, but it’s the way the collective will overcome the limitations of social-distancing that’s sure to shake up audiences’ expectations of what they’ve come to think theatre should be— even at the Cherry Artspace.

The four show season will begin with a production of the 1764 Italian comedy

The Fan written by Carlo Goldoni, and the already hilarious show, will be elevated to an intriguing place with what Buggeln has in mind. On Sept. 17–27 families will be welcomed back to the Cherry yard to witness actors play out a socially distant performance of the show replete with comically elaborate face masks, exaggerated movements and “lip-syncing without the lips.” Buggeln said the theatre will be following New York state guidelines, so patrons should feel comfortable to show up in person, and the performance will be free.

“The entire show will be performed to a prerecorded track of dialogue, music and ridiculous sound effects” said Buggeln.

Q & A: Cinemapolis Virtualis THE BOOKSELLERS, DESERT ONE AND HANNIBAL

ith the world on lockdown, what are we all watching? This week, I spoke to Brett Bossard, Executive Director of Cinemapolis, about what he’s been watching while the theatre is in its “virtual cinema” phase.

IT: How has Cinemapolis been coping with this “virtual cinema” model?

BB: I think there was a lot of interest when we first started.

It was a very novel idea at that point. How I think it’s more like our movies typically are. Some do better than others. We’re just trying to get the titles out that are available to us, and the best for

our community. It’s always hard in the summertime to get people to stay inside in Ithaca, but given the conditions of the world, it’s a little easier this year. [laughs] IT: What’s been the most popular film in lockdown?

BB: A few, actually. One of the first ones we did was “The Booksellers”, which was a great documentary about rare book dealers, and we partnered with Buffalo Street Books on that one, which was very, very popular. And there was a film called “Lucky Grandma” that we showed in May that was also very successful. For whatever reason, that one struck a chord with a lot of people. And

the John Lewis film, “John Lewis: Good Trouble”, which was a remarkable documentary.

IT: So what have you been watching?

BB: Well, certainly I’ve been watching a lot of the films we’ve been offering. Most recently, there’s been sort of a set of films, oddly, about our political involvement with Iran. “Desert One” is this great doc now playing. It’s really pretty fascinating, about a part of history that I was very, very young when that all happened, but I do remember the hostage crisis pretty vividly… some of the earliest memories I have of watching television.

“Desert One” traces the story of this failed effort to rescue the hostages, which I guess – it was obviously in the news, but it certainly isn’t something that was talked about a lot.

IT: It’s too bad they didn’t have space to include clips from “Saturday Night Live”, which was also reacting to the hostage crisis. And people forget that ABC’s “Nightline” started as a nightly recap of hostage news.

BB: Outside of that, I’ve been catching up on stuff that I hadn’t seen. [laughs] I’ve been bingeing a lot of television shows and stuff that I missed, like “Hannibal”.

When that first aired, I didn’t see that at all. [Series developer] Bryan Fuller is really a remarkable creative force in television, and that was a great show. It’s about Hannibal Lecter. It’s sort of a re-telling of the relationship between Hannibal Lecter and Will Graham, who’s the profiler who caught him in the stories that led to “The Silence of the Lambs” and the other books that Thomas Harris wrote.

IT: “Manhunter” and “Red Dragon”, right?

BB: Precisely. It’s sort of a prequel series to “Red Dragon”, but by the time you get to the third season, it starts to overlap with some of the period in which “Red Dragon” takes place. It’s a great show. Mads Mikkelsen plays Hannibal Lecter in it, and Hugh Darcy plays Graham. Gillian Anderson is in it as well, she has a recurring role, Lawrence Fishburne is in it as well. Yeah, it’s a great show. It went for three seasons, and it’s on Netflix.

Gabrielle Chapdellaine. It’s described as a strange, funny and tender story of four mysteriously connected characters who guide one another through the obstacles large and small that make up an ordinary day.

With a full cast of Ithaca favorites: Karl Gregory, Jahmar Ortiz, Erica Steinhagen and Sylvie Ynetma the show will be presented via live video stream while the actors each perform from isolated, multicamera, green screen booths. In the second live-stream performance of the season, the Cherry will present the English-languge debut of Hotel Good Luck, written by Alejandro Ricaño Feb. 13–20, 2021. Buggeln said that “audiences will feel like they are watching an indy movie being made in real time on their screens at home...It’s a kind of dreamscape that is beautiful, and funny, and sad and thought-provoking.

Hotel Good Luck tells the story of Bobby, a late-night radio DJ who experiences a trauma that subsequently plunges him into a rabbit hole of parallel universes where he ends up searching the part of him he’d thought he lost. The show is translated by Jacqueline Bixler and directed by Buggeln.

And to close out the dizzying fourshow season, the Cherry will debut a walking play tentatively titled Trap Door May 20–30. The work, written with National Book Award finalist poet Lyrae Van CliefStefanon at the lead, will take listeners through Ithaca to explore the histories of Ithaca’s underground railroad and Civil Rights’ pioneers.

“We’d always thought that with the next walking play we would explore stories of Black Ithaca, which is undertold and really rich,” said Buggeln. “Ithaca was also a major site of the Underground Railroad and that’s what headphone plays do really well is walk us through the neighborhoods that we thought we knew but actually had no clue about. And with everything surrounding BLM, it just compelled us to explore these stories in a headphone play.”

This play will mark The Cherry's third play of this kind.

The Cherry Artspace is taking the encumbrance of coronavirus head on its upcoming season. Buggeln described theatre this year as an unstable art in an unstable time but with its new season, the Cherry is going to try to show us that even with a pit instability, the Cherry will still find its way on top.

Review: So You Think You're Anitracist

f Avenue Q has taught us anything it’s the golden refrain “Everyone’s a little bit racist”; and if that’s true, Kenneth McLaurin simply took that idea, added a “...but make it Ithaca” tagline and realized his uncomfortable, snappy and satirical one-night only Youtube competition on Aug. 20, where the winners were anyone with a clue about allyship and the points didn’t matter.

And that’s generally McLaurin’s M.O.— he points out the obvious absurdity of Ithaca’s liberal behavior and forces us to sit uneasily with that truth pressed up against our faces: that dating Black men doesn’t make you antiracist, and neither does protesting confederate flags or accurately identifying Uncle Ruckus in a crowd of other racists.

In McLaurin’s Comedy on the Commons sketch, which featured the talents of Elbonee “Singtrece” Stevenson, Damon and RJ Lavine, pronounced La-VINE (it’s very important to note that for cultural reasons) as judges, and Sankofa McLaurin as cohost, everyone's a little bit racist and the best laid plans of mice and akkies often go awry. And in his comedic world, as in the real world, BIPOC are powerless against stopping the runaway ally train

except watch, judge and dole out points as they’re warranted. Just a note: all good allies believe in reparations.

“I’m very excited for this show tonight,” said Sankofa at the top of the show. “You know, they say that Ithaca has more massage therapists, restaurants and Black Lives Matter signs per capita than it does Black People, so I think Ithaca’s a great place for us to do this competition,” was the appetizing jab of the night before continuing onto the main course: the caricatures.

The first round introduced the caricatural contestants, using the actors’ real names, one by one: Yael, who puts confederate flags on racist things; Jen, a “Fall Creeker” whose Black Lives Matter sign has been passed down through generations; Robin, a kindhearted woman who enjoys the “company” of Black men; Amy C., who has started two How to be an An-

tiracist reading groups for her own esteem and Chris, a white man who has proudly “adopted” an entire black family.

From the jump, Amy C. fell 500 points behind everyone else. Although she never utters a word, her history of calling police against Black men who are minding their own business essentially disqualified her from the game. Her inclusion as a straw man not only left room for more rounds, but served as an indication of the worst antiracists present within any community: someone who doesn’t want to be racist, but undeniably is.

And while Yael’s confederate flags served “to warn her Black brothers and sisters” about racist areas to avoid; while Robin’s predatory absorption of Black sexuality provided a momentary protection for Black men; and while Jen’s life story was the definition of a diversity and inclusion initiative, it was ultimately Chris, who

donates money to a Black owned business/ family who took the round (because all good allies believe in reparations).

Round two followed a very similar vein and format. Robin revealed that her attraction to Black men led her to the Million Man March, a doubtable but somehow commendable claim. Jen revealed that she’d adopted a child from Georgia, the country not the state, and named him T’Challa. Yael fell behind by refusing to capitulate and establish her model for a gated community police watch program in a predominantly Black community and Chris was rewarded for sharing his willingness to divorce his own mother from his children if she didn’t pay full (suggested) price for the night’s reparations tickets (because the best allies believe and participate in reparations).

Finally with Chris and Robin in the top two, McLaurin took his final aim at the topic of Black cultural consumption. In the first question: did O-Jay do it? McLaurin reminded viewers of the anxiety-producing response to the 1995 trial that still has no solidified answer. Even the judges and contestants struggled over what the correct answer should be? Did O-Jay do it? Well, it depends on who you ask, suggested McLaurin.

And with the final question, the contestants were asked to name the award winning 90’s show about six Black business professionals living in a Brooklyn neighborhood, a considerably more difficult question than the other two (if you know why, you know why) and after a short pause, Chris trumpeted “Living Single!” securing his win for the night.

Wrapped up in one hand-packaged hour was a satirical attack on Ithaca’s ruling progressive ideology where McLaurin took aim again and again at all the Ithaca liberal bullshit. If you think of So You Think You’re Antiracist as less similar to So You Think You Can Dance and more akin to your mother questioning your ability to pass a test she’s sure you didn’t study for, then you’d be right on the money.

McLaurin is not just a comedian, he is a critic and he’s genuinely asking his public so you really think you’re antiracist? Does this sound antiracist to you or do you have a clue? Because, after all, everyone’s a little bit racist and the best laid plans of whites and allies often go awry.
