he Ithaca Police Department has reported three armed robbery incidents of businesses over the weekend with one man in custody.

It is unclear how many of the incidents the man who was arrested is responsible for.

At 7:35 p.m. on July 25, the Hilton Garden Inn on East Seneca Street was robbed by a man who drew a firearm on a clerk in the hotel lobby. The clerk was uninjured and the man, described as a "young, dark-skinned male of heavier stature," and who had a bandana around the lower part of his face, received an undisclosed amount of cash and fled.

Next, at 3:29 a.m. on July 26, the A-Plus Gas Station on South Cayuga Street was robbed by someone who came into the business, walked around and then pulled a handgun from a black backpack on the clerk. The cashier complied, gave the suspect an undisclosed amount of cash and was uninjured. The suspect was described as a "young, dark-skinned male of heavier stature," with a bandana on his face, a beanie, long-sleeved green shirt, long khaki shorts and white sneakers.

Finally, a convenience store on North Meadow Street was robbed around 9:30 a.m. on July 26. They said that a man had entered the store, showed what appeared to be a handgun and demanded money, which he received and fled. Shortly after, police detained a man based on a description and evidence. The man, 40-year-old Allen Forrest of Lansing, was charged with first degree robbery and arraigned in Ithaca City Court and remanded to jail. Police are still investigating the other robberies.

History Center searching for local BLM protest items

n an effort to proactively document the overall tumult of 2020, the Tompkins County History Center has entered a new era of collection in which the center initiates donation calls in the midst of historic moments as opposed to waiting for the moments to conclude.

The new mentality began earlier this year as the coronavirus outbreak was unfolding, and the center, led by Director of Archives and Research Services Donna Eschenbrenner, wanted to be able to document the pandemic as it was impacting nearly every aspect of people’s lives locally and globally.

They’ve now doubled down on the effort and have begun a call for items that commemorate the weeks of protests that have

occurred over the last two months concerning racist police brutality after Minneapolis police killed George Floyd and set off a nationwide period of anger directed at law enforcement violence.

“We became sensitized to the idea of history in the making, responding to the moment, responding to an inflection point,” Eschenbrenner said. “We did that with the COVID pandemic; we tried very hard to reach out to the public in response to something that we saw happening in real time. So what we’re doing with the Black Lives Matter protest was exactly the same— we want to reach out to the public at the same time that things are actually happening in the community, and we’ve

So far, Eschenbrenner said they have had about 10 item donations, an impressive figure considering the lack of publicity the effort has received thus far. As is always the case with the History Center though, Eschenbrenner said she is more focused on the quality of the items received than with the sheer amount of donations.

Videos have made up much of what has been sent to the History Center so far, both of protests and homemade homages to the current period.

There’s even been some crossover between the pandemic items and the protest items that have been donated.

“The protests themselves, the ones on the Commons, they’ve all been videotaped,”

During the meeting, Brown emphasized choice, and that is what seemed to be the most prominent factor in the rough plans that ICSD laid out on Thursday: parents can choose whether they want their child to have in-person instruction or distance learning online at home five days per week. There does not appear to be a hybrid option in which students could attend school physically certain days of a week and then would learn online for other days.

"Today, we know that we are in a situation here in Ithaca, in our region, we know that the Governor has given us the goahead to engage in conversations and planning to open our buildings in person, virtually or other accommodation," Brown said."We are taking an approach to this that honors who we are."

Optimistically, Brown said he would like parents to make their choice of either online or in-person for their child and have it stick for the full semester, but it's clear that could be a moot point if schools are

"I have spoken directly with Cornell about their testing regimen which has been one of my greatest concerns, and I am encouraged at what certainly seems, to this non-expert, to be a rigorous and accurate testing protocol with a turnaround time of 24 hours or less, which will allow for effective contact tracing," Lifton wrote. "The Student Behavioral Compact seems very strong to me and Cornell and local governments say they are committed to rigorous enforcement and consequences, including possible

ordered closed again or something arises with the child individually. Brown had previously expressed some level of interest in a hybrid-style model, but said that after further examination the district didn't feel it was the right strategy.

"As we reflected on our true values and that notion of choice, from my perspective that's not much choice," Brown said. "We really struggled with that—if we truly want to be student- and family-centered and also say that we are offering choice."

Obviously, things could change as soon as next week, Brown acknowledged, depending on the outbreak's level of intensity in Tompkins County.

The district has yet to submit the plan to New York State, and the state still has to approve any plan before it can be initiated. He allowed that pivots could be made, including implementing distance learning again for all students for a day, a week, etc., depending on the virus.

Talcott said that further details about the distance learning program would be revealed in the coming weeks, but she laid out an initial plan that would entail different learning time periods each day, as well as specific group and individual learning approaches for different grades.

Talcott said they are preparing to distribute iPads to each kindergartener and first grader so

they can participate in distance learning classes. (Synchronous means real-time instruction, asynchronous means learning that can be done anytime, like reading or projects, etc.)

Talcott said the district had been working with Ithaca Teachers Association President Adam Piasecki on the plan that will be submitted in order to keep teachers in the conversation. During her portion of the presentation, Talcott seemed to acknowledge that the likelihood of another mandated building closure is fairly high, either from the state level or because of a case inside the building. In this case, being able to promptly pivot to distance learning is going to be crucial.

"We know that for those who may start with us in person, at some point it is very likely that our school buildings will be forced to close again," Talcott said.

Several questions were asked about what would happen if too many people choose one option, of distance learning or in-person instruction, over the other. Brown said the district's surveys among teachers and families, which he maintains faith in, show that will not happen and that there is enough interest in both to sustain the plans.

"You wanted us to be innovative, this is what that looks

Lifton had started her queries by questioning how Cornell had come to the conclusion that so many Cornell students would be returning to Ithaca regardless of the school's intentions to hold classes in person or all online.

Cornell cited their previously announced student survey as the basis for that belief, as they have before.

"A survey of students received 10,000 responses which revealed that if all fall courses were taught remotely, 31 percent of undergraduates indicated that they would be 'very likely' and 22 percent would be 'somewhat likely' to return to Ithaca for the semester," the response said. "Graduate students also reported their intention to return to campus with 75 percent reporting that they would be 'somewhat' or 'very likely' to return to

campus whether residential instruction is offered or if all classes are taught remotely."

Cornell said a follow-up survey conducted on July 16 confirmed their beliefs that student opinion had not significantly changed (although it should be noted that is after Cornell had already released its reactivation plans). They also noted that all classes will be available online for students who wish to participate like that, although obviously that would be tough for things like lab classes, etc. The school also revealed that of the over 10,000 respondents, 32 percent of undergraduates said they'd be "very likely" to enroll if all classes were taught remotely, while 23 percent said they were "somewhat likely."

Cornell Graduate Students Cite Concerns About Reopening Policies

s Cornell University moves ahead with its plan to have a mix of in-person and virtual instruction in the Fall, a survey conducted by several graduate and professional students found that the majority of their peers were concerned about their “personal health and safety as a student and member of the Cornell community.”

The survey, conducted by several graduate and professional students, found that 69 percent of PhD students, 57 percent of MS students and 47 percent of professional students were concerned about their “personal health and safety as a student and member of the Cornell community,” with 2,209 people participating in the survey. Meanwhile, Cornell’s current policy states that grad students must optout of working in-person as a teaching assistant (TA) and cite a reason (medical risk, actual COVID exposure, etc.) why they are doing so, a level of bureaucratic hoop-jumping

that grad student representatives said is unfair.

Jeff Pea, a PhD student who helped conduct the survey and is also a graduate student representative on the Committee on Research and Operations Reactivation, noted that graduate students are worried for several reasons. Some do not think undergraduates and theirown colleagues will follow the proper protocol. Others feel that they will be “doubly exposed” since, besides taking classes and being a student themselves, graduate students often serve some sort of teaching or research role on campus.

“There is a very blurry line between when a grad student is a student and when a grad student is an employee,” Pea said.

“For example, all PhD students do research. We have a hat as a worker doing research and a hat as an instructor teaching.”

Rebecca Harrison, who is also a PhD student and a graduate student representative on the Committee on Teaching Reactivation (C-TRO), agreed

that graduate students need to be considered in both of these realms.

“The very first question I asked in the very first C-TRO meeting was for clarification about whether we were treating graduate students as ‘students’ or as ‘workers,’” Harrison said. “I had concerns from day one that we were speaking arbitrarily about the faculty as teachers and the students as students, with little acknowledgement of the fact that graduate student workers often simultaneously fill both roles.”

Currently, as noted on Cornell’s Grad School webpage, the administration recommends grad students with personal health conditions and possible exposure to COVID-19 register with the Student Disability Service (SDS) for accommodations. Grad students who have a vulnerable health individual in their household or “general concerns about returning to campus in the midst of a global pandemic” are encouraged to first discuss their concerns with their research faculty advisor or student assistantship supervisor.

Harrison stated she was discouraged by the lack of feedback from grad students when making these policies.

“Considering that I serve as the graduate student representative on the Cornell Graduate School's General Committee, the legislative governance body, in addition to my role on C-TRO, it came as a pretty big surprise to me that in neither capacity did I have an opportunity to advocate for graduate student interests when developing the policy for TA-ing during a pandemic,” she said. “The Graduate School drafted the policy itself, and the first time I saw it was when it was distributed to individual departments in its final form.”

Pea also pointed out that having grad students discuss their concerns with their supervisor can be troublesome as “not everyone has a good rapport with their supervisor.” “[Supervisors] have a lot of power over students, not only financially because that’s how students get paid, but also their general advancement in their career,” he said. “That power dynamic is really challengin.”

Furthermore, Pea stated that registering with SDS

typically requires some type of medical documentation. “The concern about that is the availability and access for students,” he said. “Black and Latino students might not want to go to healthcare providers for systemic reasons, and low income students might not have access in general.”

Pea and Harrison, alongside over 60 other grad students, touched on these points in a Letter to the Editor that was published in The Cornell Daily Sun on July 6th. The letter proposed “that in-person TA and research duties be opt-in rather than opt-out.” In other words, instead of graduate students documenting reasons why they did not want to work in-person, it would be assumed that they would be working remotely unless they stated otherwise.

A growing number of individual departments have written to grad students to address these concerns. Faculty in Harrison’s department, the Department of Science and Technology studies, wrote an email stating that “Each person can decide for themselves whether and when they feel comfortable coming to campus.”

“No one needs to provide any personal or family information or justification; a simple ‘Yes, I’m willing to have office hours or meet with discussion sections on campus,’ or ‘I’m willing to meet with individual students, but not with full sections,’ or ‘No, I don’t intend to come to campus,’ or whatever other option you’re comfortable with is all that’s needed,” the email said.

The Psychology department chair, Dr. David Field wrote a similar email to students acknowledging, “These are strange times and there is still a fair amount of flux, but hopefully we can get through all this if we work together.”

Field also told the Ithaca Times that he had “received documents from the university that this opt-in approach is generally what the university intended as the first stage. The opt-out strategy was intended only if there were conflicts between the students and instructors.”

“We do not foresee any such conflicts,” he added.

An Open Letter to Trumansburg Businesses

have just returned from shopping at a local store where I noticed a fellow customer who was not wearing a mask, although one of his two accompanying children was wearing one. As I paid up I asked the employee whether masks were required for customers. The employee just shrugged. We have to do more than shrug off non-compliance with simple measures designed to contain a pandemic that the CDC projects will cost 140,000 to 160,000 American lives by August 1. Regrettably, the store I visited today is not the only one in Trumansburg where I have seen customers not wearing face masks while shopping or ordering something from an employee. I have not returned to two of those businesses as there are other places to obtain the product or service where I feel safer from those who refuse to show consideration for their fellow customers, or for the store personnel. As business owners we have the prerogative to insist that those who enter the premises meet certain requirements. I believe this is something that every operating business in Trumansburg should be doing for the sake of their employees, their customers and the larger community. It only takes one person with the virus to spread it to many others. We know how to lower the risk. Let’s do it!

Just thinking about Dylan Roof wannebes and assorted addlepates is enough to curdle one's blood. Charley likes to keep his messages enjoyable and cogent.

But I must take issue with the appropriation of "the red cap" by TheRumpsters. I refuse to surrender. Friends have accosted me, saying I look like one of "them." But my bright red hat is MiLB Red Wings. It confuses the orange-haired minions too.

My red cap is adorned with buttons like, "Compost Manager," and "I buy local," and "Rejoice the Vote." Write On Charley!

A

s this is the two year anniversary of my managing editorship, I figured I’d espouse a few thoughts on Ithaca that I’ve developed over my time here.

There will be no rhyme or reason to them.

1. There’s no need to keep beating this horse, but Ithaca should have a minor league baseball team. Maybe just wait until after the pandemic is over, though.

2. The definitive ranking of municipalities that surround Ithaca: Lansing is first, then probably Trumansburg, then Ulysses, then an inseparable mish-mosh tier of all the other places. I was pulled over once in what I believe was Brooktondale, thus relegating it to the end of the list.

3. Watching Common Council struggle to master the relatively simple intricacies of Zoom calls has been a stablizing force in my quarantine experience, something to look back on and giggle at during any dark times.

4. I didn’t think “Aurora Streatery” was a very good name upon initial examination, but it actually works. It seems to have worked out fairly decent for the restaurants that have opened as well, though the dry weather has certainly helped with that.

5. Ithaca’s liberalism often comes under fire for being surface level (at best) or lip service (at worst) in its actual dedication to pushing boundaries to help people. There’s absolutely strong merit to those criticisms, but something that should be celebrated regardless is that Ithaca, in some manner, fosters an environment that allows social movements that actually are willing to push elected officials out of their comfort zones to develop and operate—seen most recently

with the Ithaca Tenants Union and the Unbroken Promise Initiative, born out of the Black Lives Matter protests.

5. I have never seen a population have such intermittent contempt for something that so obviously makes life sustainable for them. I’m talking here about normal Ithacans’ general distaste for Cornell University, one of the biggest employers and the single most prominent attraction in Ithaca. The eye-roll disdain seems aimed more at Cornell as a specter looming on the hill than for any specific misdeed by the school. I can’t explain it, but don’t get me wrong: After nearly four years, I feel it too.

6. Ithaca has a glaring abundance of the following things: pizza places, people who vastly overestimate the “power of conversation” (I’m not actually sure people believe this but they do say it a lot) and white people who wear dreadlocks.

7. Ithaca has a glaring lack of the following things: escalators, batting cage facilities and charmingly hostile eating environments/experiences with good food (the Pizza Hut near Ithaca Mall is the only place that qualifies, in my opinion).

8. Ithaca doesn’t need a Trader Joe’s Ithaca needs an additional downtown discount grocer, something closer to the center of town than the Aldi.

I have more thoughts, but in case I get a third anniversary as managing editor I’ll stop there. My time in Ithaca has been wildly fun and often very entertaining so far, and I hope the readers have been better informed because of it. If not, we’ll keep trying.

Talcott continued that the district's commitment to the plan is clear and that they are willing to "figure it out" by keeping different parties involved moving forward. This question evoked arguably

the most vague answers from the district officials.

After that, Burke clarified the protocol about if a positive test is found among a student or staff member.

"It depends," Burke said "If we find ourselves in an elementary setting where we are adhering to rigorous cohorting, if there is a confirmed case in a classroom, it could be that the health department asks an individual class to quarantine rather than the school."

the impact of Cornell's student body returning will be on the infection rate of the community as a whole. Cornell said Dr. Peter Frazier, who formulated the first model that informed Cornell's reactivation plans (and projects that 1,200 members of the Cornell community will test positive for the virus at some point, with 10-15 resulting hospitalizations), is working on a second model to project how intense the non-Cornell spread would be if students return.

"Dr. Frazier hypothesizes that, based on the numbers in our current model, the number of cases in Cornell faculty, staff and students resulting in infections of individuals not associated with Cornell will be quite small," the school said, adding that his second model will be released upon completion.

Lifton also asked about the potential caseload's impact on the local medical facilities and whether or not Cayuga Medical Center is prepared for that. Dr. Martin Stallone, CEO and President of Cayuga Health Systems, has previously assured the community that he is working with

Cornell, and between CMC and hospitals in the surrounding area, he's confident in the ability to handle a boost in cases.

"Cornell, Cayuga Medical Center and the Tompkins County Health Department have been in regular contact about the potential impact of Cornell’s reopening on the ability of our local health delivery systems to provide medical care to our community," the school said. "In particular, Cayuga Medical Center has shared its plan to manage a possible surge in COVID-19 cases. Our partners are confident that community medical needs can be met and have endorsed our plan."

Cornell also said it is contracting with hotels within an hour of Ithaca to have 1,200 rooms available at different times during the fall semester so students can quarantine and self-isolate if necessary, outside of space on campus already being reserved for such purposes. The school danced around specifics while answering the question of enforcing quarantine or self-isolation of students who test positive.

Eschenbrenner said. “I received a video from a gentleman who used to live here and recently moved but wanted to reach out because he’d heard that we were collecting and he created a protest song, so he sent me a video of that. We’ve received things like masks; there’s a group of young ladies who are protesting on behalf of George Floyd and other people who have been killed. They have created these Black Lives Matter masks, these COVID masks that we’re all wearing.”

The fact that there have been two periods of such historic significance just in the last few months is “mind-boggling” to Eschenbrenner, but it’s made their collecting efforts all the more important.

Real-time collection is growing in popularity in the historic archiving industry, she said, and will be even more important in accurately documenting history going forward as disinformation from the top of the country down becomes more and

more pervasive.

This is the first time the History Center has faced video donations on a large scale, but Eschenbrenner said they are able to accept and archive videos effectively now.

People who donate items like photographs, videos, etc., can expect them to become part of a larger digital archive that will be used by the History Center to give some context to what was going on locally during such a turbulent time in the country— exhibits and programming that will be seen decades in the future to help the next generations understand.

“People are reaching out to the public saying ‘This is a transformative moment, tell us what you’re going through,’ and people are responding,” Eschenbrenner said. “I’m happy to receive whatever people want to give. Poetry, diaries, photographs, videos, as wide a net as people want to respond to.”

Fighting Gas Pipelines is Deja Vu All Over Again

I

n the immortal words of Yogi Berra, “It’s like deja vu all over again.” We saw what happened when New Yorkers successfully defeated the Constitution Pipeline - the gas companies found a way to move more gas through the aging Dominion pipeline that cuts across Tompkins County. Sadly, we were unsuccessful at stopping the Dominion New Market project and now we’re stuck with the expanded Borger gas compressor station in Ellis Hollow.

Recently, Governor Cuomo’s Department of Environmental Conservation rightly rejected the permit application for the Williams Pipeline under the New York harbor, but now the corporate utility National Grid has a "Plan B" to move more gas through the so-called Iroquois pipeline. We've seen this move before, sneaking the gas in through an existing pipeline doesn't make it any safer.

The solution to our thermal energy needs - heating, hot water and cooking which now account for almost one-third of New York’s greenhouse gases, is to electrify these services statewide with efficient

technologies like induction stoves and heat pumps that will plug into New York’s increasingly renewable electric grid.

The Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act clearly calls for a carbon-free economy by 2050. Gov. Cuomo and the Public Service Commission must reject any new fracked gas “solutions.” Methane is a huge problem for the environment, with a far higher global warming potential than carbon dioxide.

Gov. Cuomo must put our children’s future ahead of the demands of the gas industry. He must clearly reject National Grid’s new Plan B proposals for gas expansion. As Yogi said, "It ain't over till it's over." The fight against gas pipelines and fossil fuels ain't over.

IC suspends fall sports for 2020 season

F

ollowing a review process, Ithaca College's Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Wednesday that it will be suspending all fall athletic competition for the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

"Our internal Safe Return to Sport Task Force, along with campus and Liberty League partners, has explored every possible avenue for a way for Ithaca College to participate in intercollegiate athletics competition," Susan Bassett, associate vice president and director of intercollegiate athletics and recreational sports, said in a press release. "The health and safety of our students, coaches, and entire campus community is our top priority. The measures required to enhance safety, which include social distancing policies, reduced offcampus travel, and restrictions on visitors to campus, prohibit our ability to provide intercollegiate athletics competition this fall. We took a thorough, process-oriented approach to our decision-making and were guided by the most current scientific and medical information in reaching this disappointing conclusion."

The news comes on the same day that the Liberty League, which the college is an affiliate member of, announced that it will cancel all league competition and championships through Dec. 31, 2020.

and sculling, men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's tennis (fall season), women's golf (fall season) and volleyball.

The college is still allowing athletes to practice, train and partake in team-related activities so long as they abide by guidelines established by the college's sports medicine team and the IC Health and Safety Committee.

Decisions regarding the winter and spring sports seasons have yet to be made.

Winter and spring athletes are permitted to practice and train in the fall. In addition, recreational activities and club sports will start after the fall semester.

"President Collado and I have been working closely with the college's athletics and health staffs, and with the Liberty League, to determine how we can best support the well-being of our student-athletes and coaches during the COVID-19 pandemic," Rosanna Ferro, vice president for student affairs and campus life, said in the release. "That work will continue, so that a comprehensive plan for managing health and safety is in place for when we are able to once again engage in intercollegiate athletics competition."

In the Middle of it All A rare sliver of hope during the pandemic: a higher baseline of life in the Jungle

he scene in the Jungle is familiar for those who are regularly down there. People mill about from campsite to campsite, talking, lending items, maybe imbibing a bit. Life in the Jungle, Ithaca’s de facto homeless encampment in Southwest Park stretching from behind Lowe’s to behind Burger King on South Meadow Street, where isolation from most of society is the norm, seems to be carrying on without much of the interruptions that the coronavirus outbreak has imposed on the rest of the county (and the world) since March. There’s not many masks to be

found and the mention of the virus elicits a shrug, at most.

But while they may be subtle at first glance, there have been significant changes to life for the dozens of Jungle residents during the pandemic, and homeless advocates hope those efforts become permanent, in addition to the normal, tireless work that is put into helping the homeless population that lives there. The goal, as Human Services Coalition Housing Initiatives Coordinator Liddy Bargar put it, is to render some benefit from the pandemic by raising the standard of living in the Jungle in order to either keep residents there comfortable and healthy, or give them enough 29–Augu s t

stability to allow them to leave homelessness if they so choose.

“The public health crisis made some things feel possible that had never felt possible before, and created a certain level of urgency where that urgency may have never existed in the past,” Bargar said. “There’s a dedicated team of people who have been working for many years on street outreach, and they do high quality work. But having the public health crisis did allow people to zero in on: Everybody else is sheltering in place in their homes, how do we make this encampment a safer place to shelter in place?”

The effort has been a collaboration between numerous groups that deal with the homeless and low-income population around Ithaca: Families and Children’s Services, the Salvation Army, Second Wind Cottages, Opportunities, Alternatives and Resources (OAR), St. John’s Community Services (which runs the local homeless shelter on State Street) and REACH Medical, along with City of Ithaca Outreach Workers Tammy Baker and Natalya Cowilich and the aforementioned Human Services Coalition of Tompkins County.

The “team,” as they’re called, formed an Enhanced Street Outreach program and have been meeting weekly to coordinate

addressing different needs of the homeless community in light of new and unique threats posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Chief among those threats was that many places frequented by the homeless population, like the Friendship Center at the shelter, the Salvation Army, and local laundromats (to name a few) were forced to close either by law or as a precaution to stop the spread of the virus. This presented a range of problems, from eliminating a main food source for the unsheltered homeless population to preventing them from washing their clothes, and the effects of the latter were quickly visible. Richard Rivera, a worker who has been on the frontlines of the pandemic response in the Jungle, said the early weeks of the COVID shutdown saw at least one case of MRSA, a staph infection and a small outbreak of trenchfoot (or “Jungle rot” as it’s colloquially known) among residents, a medical condition that results from prolonged exposure of the feet to damp, cold conditions.

Around that time is when the outreach team’s expanded efforts began to take shape.

Sanitation services were an early priority of the group: they secured funding from the Park Foundation to rent on-site port-apotties for the Jungle for six months, with the Foundation additionally paying for portable housing structures which were assembled and installed at encampments

by Carmen Guidi and others from Second Wind Cottages, a non-profit sober housing development that houses men recovering from addiction and, frequently, exiting homelessness. These more stable housing structures were particularly important during the early stages of the pandemic, when several encampments were forced to move as part of a dredging facility construction project in April. Guidi, who has long been heavily involved in helping residents who currently live in the Jungle and any who choose to move out, also installed handwashing and sanitizing stations throughout the encampments, which now spread over

a larger area in Southwest Park and hold, by Rivera’s and Bargar’s estimation, about 45 people total, making up the vast majority of the homeless population in the city.

The outreach team has also amassed a sizable amount of PPE and has thus been distributing masks to residents, particularly if someone has to go into the city or visit a store (even though Bargar said there was initial hesitation to use the masks). Mutual Aid Tompkins also has one of its food sharing cabinets at one of the entrances to the Jungle, behind the Lowe’s on South Meadow Street. With the Salvation Army closed, the homeless lost an important resource for laundry and showers, so the team built gravity showers at encampments and organized a laundry program, providing pre-paid vouchers Rivera, who spent 39 years in prison after being convicted of killing a New York City police officer during a botched robbery attempt, has spent the last year at the Jungle carving out a role with two non-profit organizations (OAR and Unity Reentry Opportunity) by helping residents with a wide range of matters and has been instrumental in providing services for Jungle residents during the

pandemic, venturing in and out of the encampment several times a day. “[We’ve] been able to provide basically everything this population needs, from medicals, to tents, food, socks, a laundry program,” he said. Just providing the Jungle residents with basic access to the things that were taken away by the pandemic, like a place to wash clothes or shower, has proven to make a substantial difference in the health of residents. “These things can be prevented with basic hygiene, dry clothes, we built gravity showers [...]

Within weeks, we had no more cases of staph, no MRSA, no more Jungle rot.

That’s from our efforts.”

The telehealth initiative has been particularly helpful in reaching people in the Jungle dealing with addiction issues. At the beginning of the pandemic, REACH Medical clinic in Ithaca began sending a worker down to the Jungle each day with a tablet, which he takes to residents who are undergoing treatment at REACH and which allows them to attend their regularly scheduled check-ins, something REACH intends to continue even after the pandemic ends.

“We already knew that many of our patients were unable to make it to appoint-

ments due to transportation issues and since that issue has been removed we’ve been able to see many more patients a day and our no show rates for primary care services have dropped significantly,” REACH Clinic Director Justine Waldman wrote in an email. “We have also been able to utilize outreach to the homeless encampment as you describe with the use of telehealth and have been able to gain trust and provide services to folks there.”

Daily deliveries from Rivera also include tarps to repair encampments and ensure they can keep their belongings safe and dry, as well as thousands of pairs of socks since March. For the most part, the Jungle’s residents don’t have too much direct contact with the general public, Rivera said, which has helped insulate them from some threat of the virus— crucially important for a group that isn’t likely to have readily available access to proper healthcare if they do get sick, especially with something as severe and stillunknown as the coronavirus.

“This is a population that isn’t likely to have any contact with COVID,” Rivera said.

“They don’t go to theaters, they don’t go to restaurants, they’re not hanging out in public places. [...] They move through places that normally aren’t very populated.”

An example of that is Kiki Howard, a Jungle resident who spoke with the Ithaca Times. Contrary to the experience of much of the population elsewhere, she said her daily life didn’t change all that much once the pandemic hit New York. But the services provided by the surrounding agencies, particularly laundry and food deliveries, did make life easier as the shutdown prevented her and others from accessing places they normally would.

“That was helping us out a lot, because a lot of people here don’t have money,” she said of the pre-paid laundry program, which is now in flux though Rivera said he intends to start a campaign to reinvigorate it. “When they deliver food, that helps continued on page 16

Two wrestlers with Cornell ties eyeing Olympics after COVID

ast October, I accompanied some friends to the pumpkin farm in Candor, and as always, it was packed. I pointed out a guy that looked like a few hundred other guys there, as he was trying to balance a basket of fries, and keep his glasses from sliding down his nose. I said to one of my friends, “Does that guy look like a world champion?”

My friend replied, “A world champion in what?” I pulled up a name on my iPhone to show him…

A few minutes later, I saw the guy again. He had a big ketchup stain on his flannel shirt, and he had his toddler daughter sitting on his shoulders. I said, “Hey Kyle, does she get any riding time points for that?” He laughed, said hello and got back to his first pumpkin farm as a dad.

Since then Kyle Dake has seen the pendulum of emotion swing wildly. He experienced the thrill of winning a second world championship and the gut punch of learning the 2020 Olympics had been

postponed until next year. Dake’s ticket to Tokyo has not been officially punched, but he has been working tirelessly toward making the U.S. Olympic team since he took to the mat as a youth, and when Flowrestling hosted an elite-level competition last weekend in Austin, Texas, Dake (Cornell class of ’13) and Vito Arujau (class of ’23) were among the grapplers to show up.

Dake would wrestle against Italy’s Frank Chamizo, a fellow two-time world champ (he won at 65 kg in 2015 and at 70 kg in 2017). Chamizo is also an Olympic bronze medalist (Rio, 2016), and the battle between the two mat monsters was the event’s featured matchup. It would also be the first time the two had competed against one another.

The fact that the Olympics have been postponed has resulted in plenty of pentup energy for these world-class competitors, and there was no shortage of trash talk. Of his decision to meet Dake’s request that the match be held at 79 kg, Chamizo

was quoted as saying, “I want to save the match,” he said of his desire to make the clash happen. “Let’s do it for the fans and for wrestling.

Of Dake, he said, “He doesn’t know what he wants for his career. Is he 79 (174 lb) or 74 kilos (163 lb)? He won one tournament at 74kg, but one victory means nothing.”

Well… I’ll tell you what else means nothing: Talk. While Chamizo scored first, Dake pulled off a rare reversal and a move known as a “gut wrench” against the defensive master, and held off a late move to win 4-3. It was a match worthy of its featured status.

Regarding the Olympics, Dake is in an odd position. He’s the best in the world (multiplied by two) at 79 kg, however, that is not an Olympic weight class. He could move up to 86 kg and do battle with his longtime nemesis David Taylor (who he beat 5-4 in that legendary 2013 NCAA final which gave Dake his historic fourth national title at four different weight classes), or he could move down to 74 kg and face another longtime foe, 2012 Olympic gold medalist Jordan Burroughs.

Given Burroughs is now 32 years old and perhaps nearing the end of his peak, many perceive that as Dake’s most logical choice.

Arujau’s match against Sammy Alvarez of Rutgers started out with its own dose of drama. The Big Red’s rising sophomore trailed 5-3 at the break, but found some higher gear, engaged it, and poured it on for a dominant 16-5 tech fall win. Appropriately enough for someone who runs the popular “Writing Through the Rough Spots” seminars in Ithaca, her poetry-writing creativity was unlocked during a siege of breast cancer. None of the poems directly related to that experience are part of this chapbook, but having weathered what she describes as “my own private holocaust” she says, “It was an impetus to think about time left and how I want to spend it. Performers return to the Hangar for a celebration of myriad talent

onk Your Horn: Celebrate!

Musical! Theatre!” streamed last Saturday as the Hangar Theatre’s third virtual production of the summer. With such an over-the-top title, you might expect a broad, genial blast of a show, something akin to “The Music Man.” But what this cabaret-style compilation of musical favorites delivered was actually much subtler.

Inspired by current social events in the wake of George Floyd’s death, “Honk Your Horn” uniquely featured 10 performers of color, all of whom have appeared in past Hangar productions. Their dynamic singing was interspersed with conversation and interviews led by artistic director Michael Barakiva and co-director Gerry McIntyre (director and choreographer of last summer’s “Kinky Boots”). The discussion included the performers’ connection to their self-selected songs as well as the challenges routinely faced by Black, Latinx and Asian actors, with a nod to theatre during the pandemic.

Not many musicals begin with a trigger warning for “graphic images of white

supremacy,” but despite this somber note, the two-hour production was dazzlingly engaging and upbeat, thanks to the passionate, gifted performers.

The evening opened with a pre-show conversation between the co-directors, whom we join in medias res, with McIntyre unfortunately never actually being introduced to us. He outlines the stages of his interesting career and cites the ground-breaking influence of “A Chorus Line,” “Rent,” and more recently, “Hamilton.” McIntyre even makes a later cameo with “Be a Lion” from “The Wiz,” which he jokes was his one-song-fits-all number for auditions.

“Honk your horn,” we’re reminded, is a lyric in the opening number, “Benny’s Dispatch,” from Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights.” Austin Scott—Benny in the Hangar’s 2016 version, who went on to star as Hamilton on Broadway and on tour—performs it with incredible style.

He’s joined by a sparkling Alexa Cepeda, also from that show; the real-life couple’s connection is palpable.

An anthemic six-woman version of Barbara Streisand’s “Enough is Enough” comes next, with updated, affirmative lyrics. Terrie Lynne, Aline Mayagoitia, Gerianne Pérez, Desiree Rodriguez, Talia Thiesfield, and Diana Huey impressively coordinate from separate spaces, proclaiming “this can’t go on.”

Apart from the topic and talent, “Honk Your Horn” holds up so well thanks to excellent musical direction by Daniel M. Lincoln and admirable technical projection, courtesy of video producer Chrissy Guest and sound designer Lance Perl.

Each number helpfully includes song title and songwriters; but alas, none of the performers’ names appear. This oversight could have been easily corrected; identifying people of color is basic, respectful inclusion. (Introducing them only in the discussion is far too casual.)

But this is the only detraction in an otherwise splendid show, in which all songs are meaningfully contextualized by the artists. Desiree Rodriguez explains what “Breathe” means to her, “In the Heights” being the first show she saw reflecting her culture. She and Diana Huey were in the Hangar’s “Xanadu.” Next Huey, who played Ariel in the national tour of “The Little Mermaid,” talks about many people’s upset about an Asian actor in the part and how the experience of visiting the Memphis civil rights museum finally prompted her to speak out. And McIntyre tells why he asks her to sing “Being Good Isn’t Enough,” Leslie Uggams’ number from “Hallelujah Baby.”

Talia Thiesfield and Aline Mayagoitia (both seen in “Into the Woods” here) simultaneously sing, with interlaced lyrics, two pieces they find resonant today, from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “South Pacific”—“You’ve Got to Be Carefully Taught” and “Cockeyed Optimist.”

Insisting that “laughter is the best medicine,” drag artist Darius Harper (Lola in our “Kinky Boots”) launches a hilarious critique of tokenism in theater with “Random Black Girl (singing soul).”

Thiesfield sings the moving “You Don’t Know This Man” from “Parade” right before intermission, which entertains us with Rachel Philipson’s fine rehearsal and production photos.

Five more songs follow in the second half, culminating in Kris Coleman’s tender “A Song for You,” by Donny Hathaway.

The journey through these musical favorites, interwoven with theater anecdotes and memories, is well worth repeating, and luckily the Hangar’s ticket price includes the ability to re-watch a performance through the following Monday evening. Beyond the music itself, our view “backstage” into actors’ individual personalities, values, and passions makes this enjoyable cabaret show especially intimate, relevant, and valuable.

The Hangar’s final play this summer will be Kate Hamill’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Sense and Sensibility,” streaming Saturday, Aug. 8, at 7:30 p.m. For tickets, go to hangartheatre.org. $20, students $10.

A taste of something new

orror movies like “Amulet” (2020, Magnet, 99 mins.)

– opening at Cinemapolis’ virtual screens and on demand July 24 – are really tricky to write about. This is not one of those slasher movies that kill one character per reel. It’s more seductive and atmospheric and takes its time laying its cards on the table, and is all the more engaging and addictive for that. I’ll try to tread lightly on the topic of plot.

Alec Secareanu stars as a homeless veteran squatting in a London flat and working construction under the counter for cash. He is haunted by dreams of his military past as a borderx220 guard who had Georgia@ithacatimes.com 607-277-7000 an encounter with a runaway refugee.

Newspaper: When his building burns down, the man is taken into a decrepit, rotting house by a nun (Imelda Staunton), where a strange woman (Carla Juri) lives, tending to her sickly mother.

“Amulet” marks the auspicious writing and directing debut of actor Ramola Garai, a worthy addition to a growing subgenre of what could be termed feminist horror films. I really like the low-key moody dreaminess that Garai uses to suck us in

and establish the feel of the film. Perhaps inspired by Roger Corman’s series of Edgar Allan Poe films, there’s a lot of investigating strange hallways and corridors, as well as a queasy sense of squalor and weirdness that really lets us know that things are not what they seem, and are destined to get worse.

More than that I cannot say. Here’s hoping that “Amulet” is your cup of arsenic.

“The Old Guard” (2020, Netflix-Skydance-Denver and Delilah, 125 mins.), directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood from a script by Greg Rucka based on his graphic novel, happens to be the first big-budget comic book movie helmed by Client: a black woman. But this particular comic book movie has a refreshing scarcity of camp, capes and cowls. It plays more like a bunch of Wolverines starring in something like “Zero Dark Thirty.”

There are leagues for different sports, and games are held twice a year, with as many as 19 different events varying from archery to cycling. by Chiwetel Ejiofor hires Theron’s crew to rescue a group of kidnapped children in South Sudan, but they get ambushed and realize that they’ve been set up. Meanwhile, a young U.S. Marine (Kiki Layne) survives a knife attack and realizes that she, too, is eternal.

Aside from the everlasting, undying nature of Theron and her gang of enduring mercenaries – expelling bullets like wads of chewing gum - “The Old Guard” plays as very grounded and realistic. There’s a lot of diversity and representation in the cast and its tone; two male members of the cadre are unabashedly romantically linked.

I liked the notion that these creatures can connect with each other through their dreams, and I liked it even more that for Theron, the thrill of immortality is truly gone, a notion that’s usually reserved for vampire pictures like “Interview With the Vampire.” Despite Theron’s weariness and existential angst, “The Old Guard” is good, pulpy, gritty fun.

thaca author Melanie ConroyGoldman put decades of work into her first book, “The Likely World” and was prepared for a book tour befitting such an effort.

Then, of course, the coronavirus pandemic hit. But luckily, ConroyGoldman, a professor at Hobart and William Smith, has been able to effectively adapt. She will now hold a book launch at the Fingerlakes Drive-In theater in Auburn, NY, on Aug. 4 from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., a rare opportunity for attendees to celebrate the launch on stage and accompanying screen.

us out a lot [too], because a lot of people don’t get out very much to go get food.”

Fred and Christie, who have constructed an encampment complex of sorts separate from the traditional Jungle, express the same sentiments as Howard and others. Being insulated from the rest of the public, while sometimes difficult, is their preference and at least during the COVID era has proven safe.

“We stay down here, don’t go out in public much, so we’re not too worried about it,” Fred said. “Richard helps us a lot.”

There’s been increased help to address problems that existed in the Jungle before the pandemic hit too. More funding came through to supply 30 fire extinguishers to distribute to residents, Bargar said, and a firefighter from the Ithaca Fire Department came on her own time to help teach how to use the extinguishers in case of an emergency (fires are one of the most common dangers in the Jungle, with a wide array of causes). Also new is a pilot program of trash pick-up, which Bargar said is being funded by outside money: workers can distribute pre-paid City of Ithaca trash bags to residents, and the loads are collected once a week, which had never been the case previously. Rivera’s daily deliveries include alcohol swabs and clean needles so that residents who use intravenous drugs don’t have to risk serious infection. Plus, discounted meals are donated by Gola Osteria, Bickering Twins, DeWitt Cafe and Shortstop Deli and brought to the encampment’s entrance for pick-up, further addressing the food security issue.

One remaining issue, though, is finding a way to get residents tested for COVID-19. Bargar estimates that not one of the dozens of residents has been tested for the virus, and even if they were to get tested she guesses that quarantining until results are returned, as is normally required, would not be feasible given their living situation. Rivera acknowledges that the threat of an outbreak in the Jungle is troubling; so far, there hasn’t been a known case or even someone showing symptoms, but the potential for a rapid, uncontrolled spread in the encampment if one person does get infected is dangerously high, he said.

“It would be terrible,” Rivera said of the potential for one case to spread. “But I walk around here with masks, and they 16 T

seem to be pretty safe, and I think a lot of the folks take precautions.”

Luckily, recent federal grant funding coming through the Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency could soon fill that void. Bargar said allocation of money is still being discussed, but that it is likely that REACH would receive funding to provide on-site COVID-19 testing at the Jungle for eight hours per week, while also administering testing at other places commonly associated with low-income or housing-insecure populations.

“If we’re really honest about it, this population and our lowest income population, like under 30 percent [Area Median Income], are not being tested in any great numbers, so we’re really targeting them with that funding,” Bargar said.

The impact of the widespread efforts, some ground-breaking for the Jungle, is two-fold. First, it keeps the Jungle population from having to make trips into Ithaca, for things like food and other needs, which are harder to obtain even as the shutdown begins to end. Second, it keeps the vulnerable population that lives in the Jungle from interacting with the larger community, where there have been cases and where cases continue to grow with increasing rapidity now. Long-term, hopefully, the new initiatives will join with the consistent aid work that was always going on for the homeless to make life easier for a population that could use a break or two as they deal with homelessness, either chosen or forced.

There’s a range of philosophies about what the goal should be for the homeless population, but at its core, the point is to make life for homeless people at least survivable. In Rivera’s case, for instance, it’s about extending the window for Jungle residents to make different choices; for others, it’s about making homelessness a viable long-term option for those who wish to continue living that way, outside of a conventional housing solution. But during the outbreak, the short-term methods have coalesced and expanded in a way that does draw some benefit from the otherwise catastrophic pandemic.

he planet Earth may still be closed for the foreseeable future, but the Museum of Earth will open back up to the public within the coming weeks.

The Museum of the Earth (MOE) plans to reopen its doors on Aug. 8 with new hours after being given the all-clear from New York State. The museum intends to implement, like all businesses intending to reopen, new health and safety guidelines for its visitors in line with the state's social distancing guidelines. The MOE will now be open between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays.

The museum will also be opening with a special exhibit on display: Bees! Diversity, Evolution and Conservation. The exhibit has been

extended to the end of 2020 and explores the "often overlooked" realm of bees, their everevolving relationship as pollinators and the diversity of their families. For more information, the MOE's website opened an online exhibit in response to the pandemic.

Andrielle Swaby, Director of Visitor Experience at the Museum of Earth said that experiencing the museum virtually or online is incomparable to experiencing it in-person.

She's excited to bring patrons back into the physical space and give them the chance to interact with the collection in person.

“Humans value authenticity. There is simply no substitute for seeing the real thing.

Even under normal circumstances, visitors always prefer to see a real fossil, for example,

rather than a replica or cast," Swabysaid. "You can't communicate an object's true beauty or scale through a photo, or feel the gravity that comes with that object's age. There's an

emotional power in seeing these objects in real life, and these feelings inspire us to care about the things we're looking at.”

For the safety of its visitors, the MOE says that they have implemented extensive cleaning protocols and will require visitors to reserve a time to visit the museum before arriving via https://museumoftheearth.org/tickets.

Each day will have three two hour time slots to ensure that social distancing can be observed within the space. Visitors will also be required to wear a mask while inside.
