isitors from sixteen states that are experiencing heightened COVID-19 numbers will have to quarantine for two weeks upon arrival to New York State, according to an executive order signed Thursday by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The order went into effect at midnight on June 25.

The impacted states are Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana Mississippi, Navada, Tennessee, Texas and Utah. Those sixteen states were designated because of a seven-day rolling average of positive tests in excess of 10 percent, or number of positive cases exceeding 10 per 100,000 residents. The governors of New Jersey and Connecticut also agreed to implement travel restrictions on people coming from those states.

Specifically, the order states that if you have been in any of those states for more than 24 hours, you must self-quarantine for 14 days from when you left that state upon entering New York.

"In response to increased rates of COVID-19 transmission in certain states within the United States, and to protect New York’s successful containment of COVID-19, the State has joined with New Jersey and Connecticut in jointly issuing a travel advisory for anyone returning from travel to states that have a significant degree of community-wide spread of COVID-19," the travel guidelines state.

Essential workers are exempted from the order but guidelines have been issued for them.

Donations helping city provide youth services

M

ayor Svante Myrick announced Wednesday afternoon that Alex Haley Municipal Pool at Greater Ithaca Activities Club (GIAC) would be reopening this summer thanks to a sizable donation made by local ice cream maker Purity Ice Cream.

The pool had been closed so far this summer due to a combination of the coronavirus shutdown's social distancing guidelines and the city's related financial woes. Though the coronavirus outbreak has weakened in New York and the Southern Tier region has been given the green light to enter the Phase 4 reopening stage, which would allow some of the youth programming that had been stopped at GIAC to return, the city's budget issues would have still prevented the reopening of the pool.

Myrick said this week that Purity's leadership had reached out to him and, feeling supported by the community even during the outbreak, wanted a way to give back. To that end, they asked how much it would take to reopen GIAC's pool.

Myrick said Jean McPheeters and the Legacy Foundation had also reached out about the necessary amount to reopen the pool, and have agreed to contribute $10,000 to the cause. The pool will be open through the end of August at least, and potentially deep into September thanks to the extra money. The city is reaching out to pool staff members now to remove them from furlough and bring them back and hopes to have the pool open next week.

In addition to the pool announcement, Myrick announced later in the week more good news: that by this week, all city playgrounds should be open after an anonymous donation of $25,000 allowed the city to recall some city staffers from furlough who could give the parks a deep clean before they were opened, and will continue to disinfect each playground each day.

"All of the playgrounds the city owns will be open next week and will be sanitized daily,” Myrick said on Friday.

City spent $1.3 million battling IPD officer lawsuit before settling, paying $970K

he City of Ithaca’s legal bills during its decadelong fight with former IPD officer Chris Miller reached over $1.3 million total before the city ended the suit by reaching a settlement with Miller in February.

Miller’s lawsuit began in 2010, but troubles between him and IPD began in 2005, when he claimed to the state Department of Human Rights that he was being discriminated against within IPD due to his gender and race. Miller is a white man. He was issued a “right to sue” by the Equal Employment Opportunity

Center in 2008 because they determined that Miller was terminated as a result of his complaint to the DHR, a violation—but not necessarily that his claims of discrimination were legitimate.

Miller initiated the lawsuit in early 2010 after receiving the EEOC decision. From then until February, the city spent $1,333,116.44, mostly on legal fees. The city was also ordered to pay Miller’s legal fees for Rome, NY-based lawyer A.J. Bosman, which amounted to $534,124.59 and pay Miller $420,000 directly. Overall, the 10 year battle cost the

All three panelists are activists in the local LGBT community, with Koreman and Black working in Tompkins County and Smith in San Francisco.

Each panelist spoke about the recent protests against police brutality in the wake of George Floyd’s killing by Minneapolis police. In his introduction, Smith said the past month has been difficult but eye-opening for him because he feels that it has normalized talking about racism and the LGBT community as a single conversation rather than separate ones.

“We tend to talk about people of color and the LGBTQ community as these two separate and distinct entities, and the problem with that is that it absolutely erases those of us who […] stand at the intersection of those identities,” he said. “We're hearing the cries of groups like me and like many others who are really seeking to be recognized and seen as human beings.”

Black spoke about her life growing up around a family that was openly racist and homophobic and her activist work, which began 25 years

ago. Black was also part of the Ithaca 50, a group of 25 samesex couples that sued Ithaca and New York State for the right to marry in 2004. Black and her wife, Margo, were married in 2015, the year the Supreme Court of the United States legalized same-sex marriage in all 50 states. “[Getting married or starting a family is] stuff that I think many people just take for granted because they don't necessarily face that struggle,” she said. “I'm very glad that we're talking about race and the LGBT community because […] there's a lot of hatred and bigotry that's directed towards both.”

A section of the panel took questions from the audience, in which Koreman spoke to strategies to address the recent deaths of Black people, specifically transgender women like Dominique “Rem'mie” Fells, who was killed in Philadelphia.

Smith said this period of time is more than a moment—that a movement exists beyond a short conversation—a sentiment that Koreman said she agreed with.

“I'm asking you to look at how this affects other people and […] we need to keep saying these things and not let the uncomfortable conversations scare us away,” Koreman said.

city nearly $2.3 million, with an additional $1 million that was covered by the city’s legal insurance policy, according to City Attorney Ari Lavine. As part of the settlement, according to Bosman, neither party in the suit admitted wrongdoing.

The benefactor of much of the city’s spending is listed as “Stokes,” or the Ithaca-based Stokes Wagner law firm, which represented the city in the case, in an itemized spending document provided by the City of Ithaca in response to an Ithaca Times Freedom of Information Law request. Of the $1.3 million that the city spent, all but $110,000 went to Stokes Wagner. In 2019, the city also paid out nearly $40,000 to Dr. Liza H. Gold, a forensic psychiatrist, for expert services during their case against Miller, and about $5,000 more to Rochester law-firm Harter, Secrest & Emery to serve as co-counsel on behalf of the city.

Since 2010, the city spent an average of about $147,670 per year on the litigation: the lowest being $42,684.43 in 2018, and a peak of $280,103.95 in 2019, before the case was brought to a close. Previous judgments in the case had awarded Miller $2 million in 2012, before being overturned, and $480,000 in 2015, which was also appealed. The 2020 settlement brings an end to any pending legislation.

“This settlement was a business decision in the best interests of the City and its taxpayers,” Mayor Svante Myrick said in a statement on the settlement in March. “After nearly a decade of litigation including three federal trials and two appeals, settlement simply became cheaper than continued litigation that showed no signs of letting up.”

Cornell will return for "hybrid" semester on Sept. 2

ornell University President Martha Pollack made her long-awaited reactivation announcement Tuesday afternoon in a campus-wide email, declaring that Cornell will return on Sept. 2 for a combination of in-person learning and online instruction for those who need or desire it.

As other schools have done, Cornell will send students home for Thanksgiving break and the rest of the semester will be held online-only, including final exams, though students who obtain a waiver will be able to stay on-campus.

The fall semester will end on Dec. 21, 2020. Pollack is sure to note throughout the message that all of these plans are dependent on the severity of the coronavirus outbreak. The spring semester is scheduled to be held in-person, and will start Feb. 9, 2021.

"It was just over three months ago, in the wake of the emerging pandemic, that we needed to swiftly deactivate our campus and shift – mid-semester – to online instruction," Pollack wrote in an announcement to students. "Since then, the question I have been asked the most is whether we will reopen for instruction this fall.

Today I am writing to tell you that the answer for our Ithaca campus is yes, we plan to have

an in-person semester with hybrid instruction and opportunities for remote learning for those who cannot return."

The school has decided to go with the two-pronged approach of allowing students access to all-online classes or in-person with online access available if the student is offcampus or must quarantine.

It sounds like teachers will have discretion on some of the finer, specific points of their classroom modalities.

"Faculty also will have the option of embracing a hybrid approach where some elements of a course are delivered online and others in-person, or where student cohorts take turns participating remotely versus in-person," Pollack said.

Arguably the centerpiece of the reopening plan is the "robust testing program" that Cornell keeps touting, though the exact specifics of how often students will have to be tested, and under what circumstances, is unclear. Pollack does say that compliance with the program will be mandatory, and will include "ongoing, frequent" testing in addition to a screening before students arrive on campus.

In her note, Pollack cites the pandemic modeling completed internally by Cornell researchers that showed they believe a localized outbreak is less likely if students are on-campus and enrolled in in-person classes in some capacity, because it allows the school greater surveillance and contact tracing abilities than if classes were being held only online, since many students told the school they would be returning to live in Ithaca regardless of the school's class modalities.

Classroom changes In classrooms, students and faculty will both have to wear facemasks or coverings, and students will have seating that will keep them six feet away from each other (keeping classroom capacity at around 20 percent at a time). In-person caps will be strictly enforced.

Dorms will be limited to single- and double-occupancy rooms. It's unclear what will happen to students who were slated to live in triple- or quadruple-rooms. Dining halls will be properly spaced, and togo service will be introduced at all dining locations. In-person concerts and visiting lectures will be suspended. Bathrooms will be "monitored" for over-sharing and kitchenettes will include social distancing signage, but remain open.

Social Behavior This is the vaguest part of Pollack's letter. She states that students will have to sign a conduct agreement, but the specifics of that agreement are nowhere to be found.

"While we will be mounting a public health education campaign aimed at reinforcing these expectations among our community, it will be the responsibility of each member of our community to embrace these behavioral requirements," Pollack wrote. "As noted earlier, we must establish a culture of shared responsibility, and each of us must take steps not only to protect ourselves, but also to protect others in the community."

International Students One of the most notable things about Cornell is its prominent international student community, though travel restrictions and national guidelines may diminish that this year, the school admitted.

If students are forced to remain in their home countries, the school has developed a program called "Study Away" at a dozen locations worldwide that would allow students to stay and study at a campus close to them while still being enrolled at Cornell and having access to its services.

De-densifying Campus The school is telling workers who can do so to stay home and work remotely. The total policy on visitors from offcampus is not clear yet, but is forthcoming and will "strongly discourage" and restrict people from off-campus. Non-essential business travel will be forbidden, and guidance will be developed to help safely plan personal and essential business trips.

"I believe that our plan, informed by our reopening committees and based on scientific analysis, is the best possible way to play the hand this pandemic has dealt us," Pollack wrote. "But we have to play it together: All of us will need to be vigilant, and to make decisions about our activities each day that are rooted in shared concern for community wellbeing. Our experiences over the coming months will also depend, in large measure, on the patience and kindness with which we treat each other and ourselves." ***** Immediate community reaction was positive, as it was when Ithaca College announced their plans to return to campus on Oct. 5 in an all in-person capacity. Tompkins County Health Director Frank Kruppa commended the decision to come back in September.

“Cornell has shown a careful approach to putting protocols in place to stop the spread of COVID-19. Their plans reflect their commitment to their campus community and Tompkins County residents,” Kruppa said. “The plan is thorough, including a robust testing program, a coordinated approach to isolation, quarantine, and contact tracing, and significant modifications to campus life.”

Cayuga Health CEO Dr. Martin Stallone echoed the sentiment, and said the announcement and plans highlight the steps being taken locally to remain careful during reopening.

"Expanding testing capabilities and supporting our communities’ health and viability, has been our primary focus since the onset of COVID-19," Stallone said. "The success of our universities and colleges are vital to maintaining our economic sustainability in the region. We have been collaborating with Cornell University for many weeks in support of their reactivation planning. In addition to Cornell University, we have also been working with Ithaca College, Tompkins Cortland Community College, and other higher education institutions and businesses in our region."

However, walk-in appointments are not yet being accepted. ‘ Visitors from 16 states must quarantine when entering New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday that eight more states are being added to the quarantine list, compiled using public health statistics related to the COVID-19 outbreak. People coming from those states into New York will have to quarantine for 14 days. The new states that have been added are California, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada and Tennessee. They are added to the original list of Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas and Utah.

Shortly after Katharyn was hired at Ithaca College in 1977, she joined colleague Frank Sharp for the forensic team, while she enthralled her students with poetry.

“The performance of literature makes the written word come to life, leaps beyond the page,” she said. “Listening to poetry aloud leads people to want to read poetry.”

But by night, Katharyn is an unusual dancer.

“I never planned to become a belly dancer,” Machan said. “The first time I ever saw one I was 15, with my mother in a restaurant that had an after-dinner show of cross-dressers. As the finale of her dance, a gorgeous “woman” unclasped her coin-hung top to show the stunned audience she was a he.”

To: Ithaca Common Council, City Hall, 108 East Green Street July 1, 2020 - Regular Meeting It is a melancholy object to those who walk through this great town when they see the streets, the roads, and cabin doors crowded with the underemployed and those burdened with the obligations of a leasehold in a time of tight money. I applaud your initiative in seeking the power for His Honor to cancel rents for April, May and June. Might I humbly suggest that the measure might in fact be too timid?

These are times that call for grand, sweeping solutions.

Take the landlords, who now have been deprived of income, but still have mortgages to pay. Why shouldn't the mayor have the power to also cancel mortgage payments? And property taxes? Insurance? Landlords are people, too. Many of them, anyway.

And lest you think that cancelling rent alone will do the trick for tenants, there are myriad other expenses that plague the recently furloughed and unemployed: utilities, food, gas, credit cards. I could go on, but you get the point—give the mayor the power to tell NYSEG and Danny Wegman to suck eggs. Electricity and groceries are now free.

You've demonstrated a willingness to think way outside the box, to stomp without hesitation on the rights of property owners that have been well-established since medieval times, to sneer at the notion of inviolability of contracts freely entered into, to scorn the Constitution itself, and that's all well and good, but you can't be half-hearted about it in this

time of great need. You've tipped the first domino and the only way your solution will work is if they all fall down.

The Answer: nobody pays for anything. I go to Gimme! Coffee, walk out with a medium salted maple latte for which I've paid nothing. But Gimme! is also relieved of its obligation to pay rent, workers or suppliers. Nobody loses! Sal's Pizzeria delivers a large pizza and I say 'thank you' and close the door. But they don't need money because they have no expenses. It's the only logical, fair way to

continue down this glorious path you've chosen. You've glimpsed a future that other communities are too feeble to even consider, and it's time to grab it with both hands. Go all in.

Of course, there will be those who will feel slighted. I propose that such cases could be presented to a one-member tribunal in the form of Mayor Myrick.

He could render his decisions with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down. Maybe wear a toga for dramatic effect. I leave the details to the Council.

You've taken the first heroic step and history will remember you for it, but it's no time for faintness of heart. Lead us into the glorious future. Destiny awaits.

By M a rjor i e Z . O l d s y day, Katharyn Howd Machan is known as Tompkins County’s first Poet Laureate. A celebrated published poet, Katharyn is a perennial favorite amongst the students in her science fiction and fairy-tale-based creative writing classes at Ithaca College. Her most famous poem “Hazel Tells LaVerne” is reenacted every year in Katharyn’s first-year seminar and has been read around the world.

And in Katharyn’s world, poetry and performance are inextricably linked.

Growing up, she recalls being drawn to the performance of poetry. During high school in 1967 in conservative Pleasantville, NY, she performed Rupert Brooke’s poetry before an enthralled crowd in an anti-war demonstration. At the College of Saint Rose she studied and performed literature as part of the forensics team. After early graduation, she coached undergraduates in presentation. On the faculty of TC3, after moving to Ithaca in 1975, Katharyn founded and coached a speech team, again noting how effective dramatic presentation captivated audiences.

“What's going to be the hard part is not only figuring out how to change your own individual behavior, but really the structural and institutional changes that have to follow,” he said. “What will define us going forward is not at all the things that we're seeing right now, but it's going to be the many, many changes that we have to make and the things that have to take place when the news cycle is over.”

he recent controversy about some of the campaign contributions Anna Kelles received in her run for the 125th district Assembly seat made me think of something my mother taught me a long time ago.

When I was growing up in Massachusetts, my mother held a series of town offices, eventually serving two terms as chair of the Town Board. One year, when I was in high school, some of my friends were applying for summer jobs with the town, so I decided I would too. To my surprise, my mother forbade me to apply.

She explained that even though she would never use her influence to help me get a town job, she thought it was important that there be no appearance of improper influence. And she did not want to put town department heads in an uncomfortable position. I was disappointed, but she insisted. That lesson has stayed with me ever since.

On policy I agree with almost all of Ms. Kelles’s positions. But I am very disturbed that she thought it was okay to accept campaign contributions from a group of developers while at the same time advocating for their project with the state DOT. Returning the donations after they came to light is not good enough.

She showed, at best, poor judgment in accepting the money in the first place.

Now we have to take on faith her reassurances that she was not trading favors for campaign donations. By that standard, any time a politician has an apparent conflict of interest, it’s okay as long as they reassure us that they did nothing wrong. That is why even the appearance of impropriety is wrong.

Albany has a persistent culture of conflicts of interest and outright corruption.

I have no faith that Anna Kelles would work to clean that up.

In response to “John Thomas closing after 26 years” I was gobsmacked when I got forwarded this article. I am not the person that puts comments but this article urged me to contribute especially when it covers one of of Ithaca's greatest treasures and for the last 22 years since graduation continues toimpress me. I have last lived the US in 2000 and every time I am lucky to pass by Ithaca since then, John Thomas is an important stop in my pilgrimage. I celebrated my happy news and many poersonal and friend achievements' there. The team at the restaurant never failed to deliver or to impress me.

Every time I cook a steak, i aspired to that perfection I tasted at John Thomas. It is too sad and difficult for me to accept this sad news. I was looking forward to return to Ithaca for the 20th year reunion and John Thomas was again on my itinerary and bucket list until it got disrupted by covid 19. I probably shouldnt say it but I was more excited to have the opportunity to go to JT than many of the reunion's activities.

Finally, I would have loved that the family continues this tradition but i cannot be selfish but can only thank Michael Kelly, his family, and the John Thomas family for all the great times, great food, and great memories. Thank you all. You will always remain that muse and unattainable goal of how a steakhouse should be. For that, I and all of the JT guests are totally in your debt.

he scene the last few nights on Aurora Street in downtown Ithaca has been vastly different than the last several months. As the weather warmed, restaurant row would normally have spent the late winter and spring becoming more and more popular, with students celebrating graduations and permanent local residents celebrating the onset of seasonal warmth (and, of course, the departure of the students).

But coronavirus has upended norms of all kinds, and that includes virtually every business, all of which will surely continue to see impacts, even as they are allowed to open as Southern Tier region moves 8 T

With the three month lockdown in mind, there may be a desire to make up for lost time, both among businesses and customers, something that could become problematic if not done so responsibly. The result is an unclear middle: an urge (and increasing government allowance) to get out, see friends and reconnect, all while a pandemic—which has largely left Tompkins County but could easily return overnight—continues to rage to the point that visitors from 16 states are now required to quarantine upon entering New York. So: What now?

When asked the question, Tompkins County Administrator Jason Molino invoked the personal responsibility for the greater good sentiments that he has pushed consistently throughout the pandemic.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is an ongoing public health crisis, we have to stay vigilant – even while people feel in-limbo, the best things to do are to wear a mask, limit contact with people not in your household, and keep six feet apart when we are around others,” he said in an e-mail. “In response to ‘What now?’, we’ve seen other communities who have increased case numbers​ as a result of one person’s irresponsible actions which could include traveling, going to work when ill, and/or not remain-

ing vigilant with wearing a mask, washing hands, maintaining distance, etc. Keeping our community healthy will be a matter of ongoing personal responsibility for all of us. We can’t rest on our laurels of having done a good job curbing the spread so far, it’s crucial that we stay attentive and act with each other’s safety in mind.”

Downtown bars like Silky Jones, The Range or Chanticleer have not yet reopened, but Collegetown has been a different story. Murmurs on social media, which have not been able to be confirmed, alleged that at least one local bar had seen sizable crowds over the weekend and had only lackadaisically enforced any type of mask requirements. Though asked if the county

“The environmental health team at our Health Department has been extremely responsive throughout reopening phases, and they have been able to deal with most complaints simply by having a dialogue and educating the establishments on the proper guidance,” he said. “The guidance

Andrew Cuomo was congratulating New Yorkers on “crushing the curve,” even after nearly 25,000 deaths in the state. Then on Tuesday, with states pausing or backpedaling on reactivation plans Dr. Anthony Fauci said the United States could see 100,000 new coronavirus cases per day “if things don’t turn around.”

“Just watching these increased spikes in the country, my son and I are concerned that there could be some re-transmission in the area, especially with summer tourism,” Norkus said. “The last thing we want to do

and wary of staying inside, and are generally aware that at least to this point, the coronavirus’ public health impacts in Tompkins County have been minimal relative to other places. Simultaneously, they’re also cognizant of the risks that remain, illustrated by the spikes in other parts of the country.

Such describes Tyler Lawrence, who was on the Commons on Friday night taking in live music that was being played by an impromptu DJ. “We went to Ithaca Beer, that place was the most packed I’ve ever seen it,” Lawrence said. “They had an overflow parking area out back, people were parking in the grass.”

Still, Lawrence said, Ithaca Beer required masks and had clear signage and rules dictating that one person from each party go up to order food, specific places to order, etc. He also saw some encouraging signs in terms of people checking others on behaviors that could put others in the building at risk, like an elderly woman who Lawrence said he saw tell three different people to adjust or put on their masks. Even when out and about with friends, Lawrence said there’s still a bit of nervousness that lurks.

“It still bothers you in the back of your mind, because you hear that we’re getting a second wave, and yet everyone’s going out and doing sh*t,” Lawrence said. “So you’re worried about that, but at the same time you are just sitting at a table by yourself, with the group of friends you’d be hanging out with anyways. [...] It’ll be a while before you catch me in a crowded bar again.”

The overarching message from local authorities has held mind-numbingly steady: despite the reopening, precautions are necessary. The most significant question, though, will be whether or not local residents heed the warnings among a “return to normalcy,” such as it is; and what happens if they don’t?

“It is likely, due to a variety of factors, that there will be fluctuations in the number of cases until we have a vaccine, the key is to keep the number of cases low, and in-line with our healthcare system capacity,” Molino said. “Wearing a mask is going to be the best way to keep the spread at a minimum, and even if there are only a few active positive cases in the community, there is still the chance of asymptomatic individuals spreading the disease. We all have some responsibility to stop the spread, Tompkins County citizens have done a good job to-date, and we’ve been able to flatten the curve, but now we need to stay vigilant to prevent any future curves.”

ven though she was wearing a mask, there was no doubt that the person in line ahead of me in the supermarket was my friend (and former Ithaca Times colleague) Deborah Bliss, and her eyes conveyed that she was happy. I asked her what she had been doing to pass the time during the pandemic and she said, “I did a triathlon today… a virtual one!”

We spoke soon thereafter, and Debbie said, “I like to schedule three or four triathlons every summer, but I wasn’t able, obviously, to do that this year.” She added, “I noticed that some organizations were holding virtual triathlons—or duathlons for those who do not have access to a place to swim, and since I have a pond I signed up for several triathlons.”

When asked what distances were involved, Bliss said, “I prefer the Olympic distance. I recently completed the Grand Rapids virtual event, and I like to see how my time stacks up against other people in my age group.” She continued, “I swim 1500 meters (0.9 mile) in my pond, I bike 24.8 miles and I run a 10K (6.2 miles). It takes me about 3 hours.”

Discussing the adjustments she has had to make during these strange times, she said, “Back when we were in the ‘real world,’ the goal was to qualify for nationals, but that’s not happening.” Showing her propensity to keep the wheels turning, she added, “I found another series of races known as the ‘Terrible Triathlon Series,’ which is comprised of six races. Some of them are like a ‘real race,’ with race bibs, actual transition zones, and I get mentally psyched when I do those.”

Bliss has decided that rather than wait for particular events to be held, she can stay a lot more active if she enters other, longer races. “Those races involve a 1.2 mile swim, a 90 kilometer (55.9 miles) bike ride and a half-marathon (13.1 miles),” she stated. “That is very challenging to me, and when I finish I feel like I really accomplished something.” I was not sure I believed her when she said, “It’s a lot of fun,” and she added, “When the pandemic hit, I could have said, ‘Oh well, I’ll just let this year go by,’ but I know how hard it is to get back into it if you stop.”

While Debbie is clearly in possession of the internal motivation needed to put in many hours of training, she nonetheless likes to keep an eye on how other triathletes are doing. She said, “There is rarely

anyone in my age group in regional races, so I like to do national and international events when I can.” She said, “If I can finish somewhere in the middle of the pack when competing against other age groups, I’m happy with that.” I asked one more question: So, Debbie, you mentioned your age group… would I be displaying bad manners in asking what that age group is?

“Oh, that’s okay,” she offered. “I’m 72, so I compete in the 70-74 age group.” ● ● ●

John Thomas Steakhouse closing after 26 years

L

ongtime upscale Ithaca restaurant John Thomas Steakhouse will not reopen its doors and owner Michael Kelly will retire after nearly six decades in the restaurant business.

Over the weekend, Kelly, 72 years old, said that the coronavirus outbreak had made the business too unsustainable and, additionally, too dangerous to continue in a comfortable manner for staff and patrons alike. He held a meeting last week to furlough staff members. From here on out, Kelly said the restaurant will pivot to selling its steak inventory, which has been vacuum packed, frozen and preserved, online at www.johnthomassteakhouse.net until their supply is gone, as well as certain wines for curbside pick-up.

Kelly said he had made the decision over the last several months, since the restaurant closed in mid-March. Obviously, another business is sure to take over the spot at the La Tourelle Hotel & Spa, but Kelly said it wouldn’t be operated by him or his children.

“I’ve had at-length discussions with my wife and children, all of whom have worked at the restaurant over the years— my son Devin currently being one of the managers, my wife Barbara being the

While staff members were saddened

by Kelly’s decision, he said they were understanding of the situation given his age and the overwhelming uncertainty the COVID-19 outbreak has introduced to the hospitality industry, which Kelly’s worked in constantly and joyously since the mid 1960s. He said he would most miss the camaraderie of the restaurant atmosphere, working with young people just starting out in the industry and the satisfaction of serving a large, busy crowd.

“Being a glutton for punishment, I’ve worked in the restaurant business since 1965, starting as a busboy at The Park Lane, a five star restaurant in Buffalo, NY,” he said. “I’ve owned restaurants since 1976…the first being Scotch ‘n Sirloin on Long Island, Dar Tiffany in both Long Island and Puerto Rico, The Nautilus Café on Long Island and John Thomas Steakhouse here in Ithaca. My passion for the business has kept me going all these years.

he Ithaca Fire Department’s Rope Rescue Team was called out again on Sunday to help an injured person at the 30 Foot Dam near Giles Street.

For the third time this month, according to a fire department release, Rope Rescue crews from IFD were dispatched to access and rescue someone injured in Ithaca. The rescue took place at the back of the 30 foot dam near Giles Street, regarding a man who had jumped 40 feet into the water and injured his shoulder.

The man was rescued by Bangs Ambulance Paramedics and IFD personnel, who made their way down the trail to him, placed him in a rescue basket and brought him out of the ravine using a rope system, after which he was taken to the hospital.

Two other times this month crews responded to the same area for people with ankle injures from jumping or falling near the dam. Firefighters used rope systems and ladders on those calls to get the people out safely. Other calls for help from Coddington Road and Lake street this month have kept the department’s technical rescue team busy.

"The Ithaca Fire Department practices regularly for rope and other technical rescue situations, to be able to handle these types of calls," the statement said. "However, the department reminds everyone to only hike on approved paths and never swim in any restricted locations."

rtist Joe Crookston is a musical bard who lives in Ithaca, New York. Crafting his songs on a fiddle, guitar, or a slide, Crookston has been sharing his stories for more than 16 years. He was named the 2016 Folk Alliance International Artist in Residence and he’s performed with John McCutcheon and Suzanne Vega.

In this interview, Crookston talks about his upcoming virtual tour and what drew him to craft deeply personal songs.

Ithaca Times: Who were your first musical influences before you began to play music?

Joe Crookston: I grew up listening to Polish and Hungarian Polkas on repeat 1-2-1-2 backbeat accordions and book chucks!

There was music in our house and lots of it ranged from cheesy Herb Alpert records to masterful guitarist Wes Montgomery. I remember, as a kid, being mesmerized by the octave guitar leads

by Montgomery.

IT: Can you remember the moment when you decided that to write and sing in music is what you wanted to do for a living?

JC: During college [at Kent State University], I was invited by a friend to go to the Kent State Folk Festival.

I didn’t even know what a folk festival was!

I was a classical guitar performance major and ended up at the weekend festival where I saw Nanci Griffith, guitar picker and builder Wayne Henderson, John McCutcheon and the Horseflies. I was instantly blown away and knew my direction in life. I loved the guitar, but after witnessing these players and writers, I knew that I was drawn to community, stories and the social aspect of music that classical guitar didn’t have for me. I took my guitar chops and superimposed a love of story and social justice and community. Folk music!

IT: What makes a good story for you?

JC: A true story. A lived story. The nouns in a song are the architecture that bring the

emotional essence to life. I find when I own the specific nouns and observations that are true, the core essence of the story rings more true. I also love to juggle and shift the narrator of the story. Who is telling this story? As a songwriter, it’s been very important to me not to always be the narrator. Sing in first person from the perspective of the kid in jail or the Navy Seabee. As the singer, I like to disappear and the story be as universal as I can.

IT: Before the pandemic was fully felt you were working on a new album. How near are you to completing it? Or will you wait to release it next year? And can you talk some about this current body of songs?

JC: Well yes…errr. I had a week booked in Nashville with my buddy Ethan Jodziewecz producing. We had six amazing musicians lined up to sit in a circle and play together.

Chris Elderidge from the Punch Brothers, Jenna Moynihan, who plays fiddle with the Milk Carton Kids, Antje Duvikot on vocals… etc… It was a dream project for me that I have always wanted to do. I’m getting in touch with my Zen Buddha letting go…letting go. For the next 4-5 months through the fall…I’m going to set up residence at REP studio in Ithaca, and make a very different layered collage of a

record. It might be the weirdest creative thing I’ve done to date. It’s my Sgt. Pepper album where, instead of playing live with a stellar group, I’m going to twist, manipulate and create a sonic record that is complex, layered and way less “singer songwriter.” I might not even put my name on it.

IT: What do you most look forward to when you perform your music?

JC: The fame and fortune for sure! Actually…I’m a physical person. I really love the energetic outlet of a good live show.

Folk aerobics! I love the “awakeness” of being in the moment and communing with others. Facilitating group connection and a reminder of our humanity.

IT: You’ve opened for other artists such as Dar Williams, John Gorka and Judy Collins; however, this summer virtual tour is different for you. Talk about performing in the time of COVID-19.

JC: I have been very surprised by the live streaming and how connected I do feel when I’m playing online. The emails, notes, cards and support from my fans has been amazing. Truly.

I want my music supporters to know that they did some version of saving my life. Gave me a reason to show up. They gave me the motivation to figure out new technology and still connect. I am forever grateful for that.

IT: In your spare time can you share how you relax? Are you an avid reader?

JC: I’ve got lots of spare time! Relax? I wish I knew. One of the things that has been an awakening is that for the two hours on stage in a night, I might spend 30 hours driving, loading, changing strings, rehearsing, etc. The pandemic really busted open sooo many hours that I was unsure what to do. I’ve never been good at relaxing. I feel alive when I’m creating. I have never wanted to be an “Ice Cream Licker.” You know at the beach where tourists stroll on the boardwalk, licking ice cream, watching the juggler. I always want to be the juggler or the street musician. I ride my bike…

I do wheelies and jumps, little wheelies and little jumps that in my mind are epic.

The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story | Netf lix

hen Queen frontman Freddie Mercury died in November of 1991, I naturally assumed that the band was over. You can’t just replace a talent like Mercury. The next year,

when Queen hosted a tribute concert, you wouldn’t believe the names of the singers who came to sing: Annie Lennox, Robert Plant, Elton John and Def Leppard, just to name a few. Each performer was able to

sing a facet of Mercury’s stuff, but no one could cover all the bases.

After the group completed the last album of original Mercury material, they spent some years touring and recording with Paul Rodgers of Bad Company. Rodgers is a fine blues and soul belter in the classic tradition, but even then, he wasn’t a great fit for all of Queen’s catalog; it seemed like the band could only do some of their stuff, not all. Freddie Mercury was truly irreplaceable.

I still feel that Mercury was a truly unique talent, but the band did find someone with the talent to really go for it.

I can’t remember when a rock documentary made me so happy, but “The Show Must Go On: The Queen + Adam Lambert Story” (Netflix-Miracle Films-Seven Seas Productions, 2019, 85 min.) sure did.

I’m probably the last person on Earth who hadn’t heard of the singer Adam Lambert, but I rarely have access to TV, and I’ve never seen an episode of “American Idol.” As soon as Lambert began appearing on that show, Queen band members Brian May and Roger Taylor began getting messages from all over: you better hear this guy. They did, and wound up playing a Queen medley with Lambert on “Idol.” Lambert didn’t win, but he wound up touring with Queen, and it’s no fluke.

Adam Lambert is a monster talent, and Queen—minus original bass player John Deacon—has been packing arenas and enormo-domes for almost a decade now.

I guess we’re all so used to the four-act structure of all those “Behind the Music”

episodes—rocket to stardom/living the high life/fall from grace/humble comeback—that we’re used to rock documentaries that end tragically.

This film starts out that way, with the band brought down by Mercury’s death, but it ends with such joy, positivity and possibility. There’s a moment near the end of the piece with Lambert and the band backstage in a dressing room. They warm up by singing a Queen song with all the stacked harmonies we remember, and boy does it sound sweet. ● ● ●

I made it my mission to pay more attention to the horror genre this year, and even though I never saw “The Boy” back in 2016, I figured, “Hey, it’s a creepy doll-that-comes-to-life movie! Whaddya need, a road map?” and hunkered down for a screening of “Brahms: The Boy II.” [Lakeshore-STX Films, 2020, 86 mins.]

It’s all about a family moving into a scary house, and their kid discovers a creepy doll in the woods, cleans it up, names it Brahms, and proceeds to creep out the rest of the family.

What we get isn’t the greatest creepy doll movie ever made, but after all the usual twists and jump scares, at least it plays fairly by the viewer, which is more than I can say for “The Turning,”the recent rotten remake of Henry James’ “The Turning of the Screw,” which literally falls apart in its last 30 seconds.
