A

s anticipated, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Friday morning during his daily press briefing that schools in New York State would be closed for the rest of the academic year in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The state is waiting until the end of May to make any determination on the status of summer school programming. Cuomo had previously closed schools through the end of April. He additionally announced that colleges would be closed through the end of the academic year too.

Cuomo has spoken about schools being a key part of the plan to reopen the economy, which may be one reason behind the hesitance to cancel summer school programming now. Without school, parents are left to find childcare for their children during the day, which could potentially hamstring many parents from returning to work in a fulltime capacity even if the state relaxes social distancing laws and allows them to.

Local schools have been adapting to online classes for the last several weeks, since Tompkins County Administrator Jason Molino announced a state of emergency on March 13 which was to last one month. That was during a joint press conference with ICSD Superintendent Luvelle Brown and other public officials.

The closures have since been extended at the state level.

The financial implications of the closures are still coming to light, though they’ve been universally negative, as was expected. Cornell University and Ithaca College are both either discussing furloughs and continued on page 12

New GreenStar

GreenStar expansion set to open May 6

G

reenStar’s long-awaited expansion will open its doors to the public May 6, signaling a new era for the local grocery co-op amid a troubling economic landscape for brick-and-mortar retailers.

The store, located at 770 Cascadilla Street in Ithaca, replaces GreenStar’s former West End location at 701 West Buffalo Street, which is closed as of May 2. The new location’s store hours are 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The expansion includes a total increase of 10,000 sq. ft., office space on the second floor and, according to materials touting the opening, a “more culturally diverse product line.”

Plans for the expansion have been in motion for over two years, having received approval from the city in April 2018. All operations from the West End building will be accommodated in the new location, including classrooms with a teaching kitchen as well as a central kitchen. There will also be a separate eating area inside and two eating areas outside, with space for classes and a covered bike rack.

As for products offered, the new store will cater to much of the health-conscious eaters that are in its audience already, though the variety of products will be expanded. The store’s health and wellness section will include more medicinal herbs and body care products, as well as a wider array of homeopathic remedies, some supplied by local purveyors. Groceries will also include more options, plus a full section dedicated to plant-based foods complete with non-dairy cheeses and milks.

“Three times the current grocery shelf space means an expanded product selection, with additional budget-friendly options and many more foods geared toward Ithaca’s diverse cultural communities,” the store’s website states.

“You’ll find a vastly expanded selection of regional and international beers and ciders, too.”

Virtual Walkthrough Highlights the History of Ithaca’s Queer Community

he “Ithaca is LGBT History” virtual walkthrough officially went live on the app PocketSights after a Zoom conference led by Luca Maurer late last month.

Maurer, the director of Ithaca College’s LGBT Center, has led the physical tour in the past with the help of students and community member tour guides. The tour, which launched virtually on April 24, is uniquely crafted to focus solely on the Ithaca area’s rich history of queer people, their impact on the town and the growing efforts and actions taken for LGBTQ rights.

food truck to maximize efficiency while keeping employees working. Despite the hardship of applying for loans and waiting to receive funding, it was without question or hesitation for CEO Jorge Bouras and the Dos Amigos team to

students and other members of the queer community. The tour, and all 32 of its sites, can also be split up to just focus on either IC’s campus, downtown or the Cornell University area.

Some of the spots included are the homes of queer artists and celebrities who resided in Ithaca, as well as sites of student led protests, the Gay People’s Center from the 1970’s, Kurt Cobain’s ashes (at the Namgyal Buddhist Monastery) and the site of the first public declaration of the Bisexual Movement in the United States in 1972.

The app can be used from the comfort and safety of your own home, or anywhere in the world. For accessibility purposes it contains both written text and audio voice-overs from students who worked on the project with Maurer.

“I even worked with a group at an eldercare facility,” Maurer said. “They planned a series of outings using their multi-

person handicapped accessible van to drive the tour route and see the sights from the comfort and safety of their care facility’s vehicle. This was exactly one of the ways we had hoped the tour would be used.”

The tour also highlights resources to the Ithaca queer community like the Southern Tier AIDS Program (STAP), Tompkins County Courthouse, Firebrand Books and Ithaca College Center for LGBT Education, Outreach & Services.

“Since LGBTQ people span all dimensions of society, we wanted the LGBTQ History Tour to be accessible to everyone,” Maurer said. “We couldn’t have predicted COVID-19 and its impacts on our lives. But by centering people who experience marginalization as we created it, our LGBTQ History Tour turns out to be uniquely suited to these times in which we live.”

“The Dos Amigos team, and quite frankly anyone in the hospitality space are naturally drawn to providing,” Bouras said. “Service is at the very core of what we do in our regular day to day. We get excited to do it.”

On Saturday, April 18, Dos Amigos prepared an extra special burrito order for the healthcare workers at Cayuga Medical Center. This donation came courtesy of a new promotion called “Burritos for Heroes,” which began on April 15.

It offers to match the first 50 orders above $10 with a burrito to donate to an essential worker in Ithaca. It’s another example of food trucks in the area accepting a financial loss to give back to the community, first shown last month when Circus Truck began offering free meals to laid-off industry workers for April.

Since May 2019, Bouras has been looking for the best way for Dos Amigos to give back to the community it has served for almost five years. Now, he and his team are creating that impact by feeding the heroes braving this pandemic.

“We strongly believe in the good a profiting business can do within the community it calls home,” Bouras said.

“This pandemic has made it

very clear as to who needs help. Now that we have slowed down, we can refocus on this and make sure to build it into our model, so when we do reopen to full service out of our new storefront, we can scale these efforts seamlessly.”

Following the first contactless burrito delivery to Cayuga Medical Center, the Dos Amigos team was back to work raising money for the next donation. They aim to donate 50 burritos once a week and give to several organizations throughout the promotion to maximize their social impact.

Their focus is on giving back to first responders at the moment.

Their next donation will go to Bangs Ambulance employees.

“Right now, we think our first responders just need some love and that’s where the focus is,” Bouras said. “But as state and local government organizations begin to see funding dry out, we want to include them in the mix. Ultimately, we are open to anything.”

Given the current situation, the restaurant has had to adapt to new services to be able to continue to serve the Ithaca area. Some of the major challenges the restaurant is working through include moving to a new, temporary location at 536 Thurston Ave. and adding a delivery service.

Local DSA stages march to push rent demands

T

he intersection of Cayuga and State Streets hosted an unusual sight during these quarantined times on Friday: a group of a few dozen people, gathered in cars, riding bikes and on foot, stopped in the street. The demonstration, held at the city’s most prominent intersection at the west end of the Commons, was the culmination of a cross-city trek by the group, escorted by police trailing the crowd.

The scene was joyful, with horns honk-

ing, chants, signs and dancing. It was the most excitement near the Commons in months, but while its participants were at least momentarily happy, their purpose was serious: the march, called “Social Justice during Social Distancing: A Car and Bike Protest” and organized by the local chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, meant to re-emphasize the demands of local renter advocates on the first of the month, when rent payments are traditionally due.

Calls for some type of short-term rent reform have intensified over the last several weeks as dominos have continued to fall from the coronavirus outbreak.

Businesses have closed either because of students leaving or social distancing rules, thousands of people’s jobs have evaporated or underwent compensation cuts, and the end result is a growing number of people in the renter-rich Tompkins County housing market struggling or unable to pay their monthly rent.

Those economic ripples have given rise to a rent freeze campaign that has roiled members of Common Council (via a mass phone call campaign), inspired at least one graffiti tag around the city and pushed Tompkins County and the City of Ithaca to repurpose state grant money to form rent relief funds for local renters. Both municipalities will be asking the state for permission to do so, something New York has indicated it is amenable to approving.

City officials have remained steadfast that any action limiting or halting rent collection would have to be enacted by the state instead of on a local level.

The march’s date was targeted as well because May 1, or May Day, is International Workers’ Day. That day was chosen to “bring people out of isolation while maintaining responsible, safe conditions for participants as we speak out to defend the rights of workers, the unemployed and poor communities.”

In a press release announcing the event, Ithaca DSA laid out a list of demands, which included: an unconditional rent freeze either through August or for the duration of the outbreak; permanent medicare for all: guarantee paid sick and family leave for essential workers; a universal basic income until the economy is rebuilt; and the release of everyone currently incarcerated to avoid a COVID-19 outbreak in jails, prisons or detention centers.

Some of the goals don’t seem particularly realistic, but the group certainly has the support of a significant amount of the public. The march itself was larger than was probably anticipated, and nearly 5,000 people have signed on to the petition for a rent freeze that was launched in March.

“Our economy should work to meet our individual and community needs, not multiply the wealth of greedy corporations,” said Russell Rickford, a local organizer associated with DSA, Black Lives Matter, the recently-formed Ithaca Tenants Union and the Tompkins County Workers’ Center. “Our government should protect us and guarantee the services we deserve, not abandon us while billionaires rake in profits. We are not responsible for this pandemic. We will not bear its devastating burden alone.”

Another four COVID -19 deaths reported in Tioga County - Tioga County Legislative Chairwoman Martha Sauerbrey reported four more deaths due to COVID-19 on May 2. The four deaths bring the total to 14 in Tioga County. Many of the deaths have been reported to be residents at the Elderwood nursing home in Waverly, which has been significantly exposed to the virus.

However, Sauerbrey did not specify whether or not these four deaths were individuals from the Elderwood nursing home.

High school spring sports season cancelled - The remaining nine sections associated with the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) announced that they will be canceling their respective spring sports seasons on May 1 due to the on-going COVID-19 outbreak.

Sections VIII and XI cancelled their spring seasons back on April 21. The decisions comes in wake of New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s announcement to close all schools to in-person learning for the remainder of the school year. Earlier this week, NYSPHSAA announced that the spring championships would be cancelled.

By C h a r l ey G i t h l e r ast week, amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Governor Andrew Cuomo outlined the guidelines for a phased plan to re-open New York on a regional basis. He also announced the creation of the New York Forward ReOpening Advisory Board to help guide the state’s re-opening strategy. It might start happening as soon as the next couple of weeks in this part of the state, and for those of us too non-essential to have ventured out of our houses much since mid-March, there are questions. On the one hand, things will be different. It’s not like the virus is taking a vacation. And on the other hand, I don’t know about you, but I’ve forgotten a lot about how to hobnob with other people.

Here are the answers to common questions: When can we shake hands again?

Never.

If I lived in Box Springs, Georgia, I’d have been able to go bowling, get a tattoo and eat a big old platter of hush puppies in a sit-down restaurant for the past two weeks. I still can’t do any of those things in Ithaca. What gives?

It is certainly NOT because Georgia is a state of slack-jawed, stick-whittlin’, flat-earth hillwilliams. Georgia’s governor Brian Kemp said that, although the state’s data did not show Georgia was meeting the Trump administration’s “full gating criteria” for reopening businesses, he thought that’s what the president wanted him to do anyway.

Actually, are we really going to have to talk to people directly again when things do open up?

Good question, and no. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that face-to-face interaction is over-rated and probably a construct dating back to pre-internet times. There’s no reason at all that we can’t continue to communicate through technology, even when in each other’s presence, when restrictions are lifted.

I never truly realized until now just how much crap I have. When will I be able to hold a garage sale?

Experts agree that acquiring things and then selling them to each other is what keeps the American economy going, so garage sales will be among the first activities allowed, with restrictions on the following items: stained clothing, stereo speakers, landline phones, coffee mugs, non-flat screen TVs, vases that are deemed ugly by the New York Forward Re-Opening Advisory Board, and shoes, because nobody wants that stuff anyway, even for free.

Will I have to wear a mask when patronizing businesses in the first reopening phases?

Yes, a mask and pants. The governor was quite clear on both.

We haven’t heard much from the anti-vaxxers. Are they still around?

There are no atheists in foxholes.

Will I be able to attend Zoom meetings while driving a car?

There is a new provision in Vehicle and Traffic Code section 1225-D specifically allowing Zoom meetings. You just can’t check your email or text while at that meeting while operating a motor vehicle.

We’re a community center in many ways.

Thousands of us share long-term connections with GreenStar, staff and each other by returning repeatedly. I’ve done 99 percent of my shopping there for 36 years, also because GreenStar expresses, however imperfectly, many more of my values than any other grocery. Some have included social and environmental justice, health and health insurance for full-time staff.

Over the years, I’ve disagreed with some major management decisions and decision-making processes and been upset by certain aspects of the workplace for staff. GreenStar, like most businesses and organizations, I believe, has its share

of problematic personalities and policies.

For me, this is irrelevant regarding my continued support of the co-op. I think of GreenStar, like each of us, as a work in progress. It’s the best thing around regarding the expression of my values and a place I have always felt a sense of belonging. Unlike almost all businesses, one can get involved in GreenStar regarding governance, some decision-making and exploring issues and possibilities.

The idea of having no other choice than to shop at a corporate grocery would be a major personal loss.

I just visited the new store during opening preparations. Although I’m a lover of small scale, the new store looks beautiful, colorful and much more spacious than before. The location is less convenient for me, but to me, that’s a small price to keep GreenStar alive. Please give

’m writing to express my difference of opinion on the quality of TCAT’s service. I was reading an article in the April 29th issue of the Trumansburg Free Press about Victoria Romanoff leaving the Trumansburg Planning Board over concerns about the Crescent Way Project. In her comments, she said “The bus services are as slow as slugs. They pick up everybody at every corner, which is very sweet of them. But it doesn’t get you to your job quickly”.

I’ve heard other people commenting on that project make similar characterizations. I wanted to offer a different view of the bus service as someone who has been riding theTCAT bus from the Trumansburg Park and Ride nearly every week day for over five years.

To be fair, I know it does seem like the bus stops at every corner when you are trying to proceed down the road and are behind the bus. I do occasionally drive to Ithaca and have been behind the bus.

However, it’s not quite true that they stop at every corner. The TCAT buses only stop at designated stops within the village, marked by bus stop signs. On most of Route 96 passengers can flag the bus pretty much anywhere, as long as it is safe to stop there. The designated stops begin again at the Professional Building. There are quite a few people who utilize this service, but they aren’t on every corner.

As for how quickly you can get from Trumansburg to Ithaca by bus, I board in Trumansburg at the village park and then disembark at the corner of Green and Fayette streets in Ithaca about 25 minutes later. I walk two blocks to my office and I’m on the clock at work by about 32 minutes from the time I got on the bus. That might not be quite as quick as if I drove my car, but I don’t have to find a place to park and I think it’s a really reasonable

amount of time spent getting to work. It doesn’t remind me of slugs at all.

I’ve always been impressed by the amount of rural transit service you can get in this area. We’re fortunate to have buses going to Trumansburg, Enfield, Newfield, Varna, Freeville and Groton.

It’s an amazing resource for someone who doesn’t have a car, or whose car is in the shop, or for people who don’t want to drive in bad weather. It also helps lessen traffic congestion in Ithaca. I’m happy to be a regular rider on the route 21. I would encourage people to make use of this service as often as possible.

“We’ve never done delivery, and there’s a very specific reason: Our food just does not travel that well,” Bouras said, “For us, it’s so frustrating to see our hard work get compromised by travel, but without this new format, we would’ve had to close a while ago.”

National Nurses Week A moment to celebrate the crucial role of nurses in a variety of roles, esepcially now.

ational Nurses Week is a yearly time for celebration, an annual highlighting of the services that nurses, arguably the most underappreciated part of the healthcare system, provide for patients each day.

It’s held each May 6 through May 12 and normally passes without too much fanfare, save for maybe a few articles or a segment on a morning TV show.

But with the coronavirus outbreak still in full swing, this year National Nurses Week carries some increased significance as nurses form the true frontline battal8 T

ion against the virus pandemic in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and elsewhere around the country.

The relatively low number of coronavirus cases in Tompkins County, and particularly COVID-19 related hospitalizations, belies the actual experiences of local nurses. At Cayuga Medical Center’s emergency department, nurse Travis Bortz said even though most cases aren’t admitted, and thus aren’t listed in the health department’s daily hospitalized list, there’s still a steady stream of people dealing with COVID-19 symptoms who come to the Emergency Room for treatment. That’s compounded 6–12,

by the 200 or so staff members at the hospital who recently took voluntary furloughs, offered by CMC administration, to help the hospital’s financial situation while it was barred from performing elective surgeries, a significant source of revenue (CMC was allowed to restart elective surgeries on May 4 by the state).

“It is a game changer,” Bortz said of the outbreak and its ripple effects so far. “Just from having to take on different roles as a nurse, that at the end of the day are your responsibility, but without the ancillary staff because we’re trying to save money. [...] Chaotic-wise, yes, you don’t have the

staff that made your job easier. Everything comes down to the nurse’s responsibility, and if you haven’t done it there’s no excuse.”

“This is what we signed up for, as a nurse,” Bortz said, noting past situations like SARS in 2003 or ebola in the mid2010s. The difference with this particular outbreak, though, has been the sheer length of its impact compared to those others, and how severely close to home it’s hitting in America.

“It’s just so prolonged, everybody has a heightened sense and that might be taking a toll on people. This is something that you are nervous about going into work and bringing it

home, I think that’s the tough part. [...] It’s really hit home for everybody.”

For Bortz, the hardest part has been separation from his family, a precaution he has taken to protect them from any illness he might transmit during the outbreak. He lives in an apartment with his fiancee, but they’ve avoided bringing her six year old son away from their apartment for weeks because of the outbreak and concern over anything Bortz may have picked up at his job. He has, he admits, snuck over to his mom’s house a few times, but he’s comforted by the fact that she willingly, and somewhat humorously, follows him around with a bleach bottle to decontaminate as he moves throughout the house.

As much as nurses have been rightly venerated over the last few weeks, under normal circumstances there isn’t the glamourization or recognition of the profession that other jobs experience in popular culture, like police officers or firefighters or even doctors, Brotz said, to take nothing away from the extreme value of those careers. So while the week has never meant much to him historically, he appreciates that nurses have the chance to get some limelight they don’t normally receive on a large scale.

The mental toll might be the subtlest struggle of this era for nurses, though that doesn’t make it any less severe. Fear of contracting the disease among the general public means that only the most serious of serious cases are coming to the emergency room for treatment, whether they be COVID-19 cases or not.

“We’re seeing sicker and sicker patients come into the ER, we’re not seeing your easy lacerated finger that needs a stitch or two,” Brotz said. “The only people who are coming to the ER are the ones who really, really need to. That being said, every patient coming through those doors has just been a heavy load, mentally. [...] I expect that you’re going to see more and more burnout, especially in the emergency department.”

Even with that, Bortz commended CMC’s administration, specifically Director of Emergency Services Andrea Champion and Cayuga Health CEO Dr. Martin Stallone, for their response to the coronavirus outbreak and their attentiveness to nurses’ needs, be they logistical, mental, emotional or otherwise. Those sentiments were echoed by Rosie Carpenter, an urgent care nurse at CMC, who credited them with actively listening to any concerns shared by nurses and working to address them promptly.

Like Bortz, Carpenter said National Nurses Week is more rewarding for her to watch any praise her colleagues may get for their worthy work, as opposed to personally gratifying for herself.

“They deserve a week of celebration, for sure, I think their families deserve a week of celebration also,” Carpenter said, laughing. “When you’re married to a nurse or related to a nurse, everybody’s in a roar half

hit New York City with full force, but was able to adapt. She enjoys, she said, the “organized chaos” of it all, even when the situation intensifies as it has over the last several weeks.

“It’s been a huge learning curve for everyone involved, there were days when the direction was being changed about every 20 minutes,” Carpenter said. “You just have to figure out how it’s all going to work out

the time with everything going on, like this COVID thing. They ask ‘What are you bringing home?’ and I say ‘I’m not bringing anything home, honey, don’t worry.’”

Carpenter said her home routine hasn’t been disturbed much by the outbreak. A 43 year veteran of CMC, 31 of which have been spent as a registered nurse, she said the precautions taken at the hospital are enough to put her mind at ease; when she gets home, her shoes come off outside, as they always have, and that’s it.

Carpenter was apprehensive at first, particularly while watching the pandemic

for everybody and keep everybody as safe as possible.”

As for how she and her coworkers have been able to react to the increased “organized chaos,” as she calls it, Carpenter said they’ve been fantastic. With support from management, she said the nurses have been able to handle their jobs and stay prepared in the event a positive case is admitted or urgent care staff is thrown into coronavirus-related action.

In these interviews, that was a common sentiment: while the last few months have been taxing, the most prominent outcome May

has been an awe-inspiring effort put together by nurses to handle the extra load, and be prepared if the situation does happen to get worse locally. Nursing homes statewide have been hit especially hard by the outbreak, though Tompkins County nursing homes have been able to avoid any fatalities unlike much of the counties closer to the downstate hotspots. Beechtree Nursing Home Director of Nursing Valerie Lynch said her staff has also been able to adjust on the fly admirably, particularly in the early days when, like at CMC, directives could change in the blink of an eye.

“I’ve found that we can take on a lot more than we ever thought we could,” she said. “We have to keep changing everything, updating the staff, going with the flow and all the emotions that come with that. [...] Everybody’s been stepping up and doing a great job, we’ve been able to maintain. Our staff has been doing an amazing job.”

Without a major outbreak to respond to, Lynch said that the day-to-day operations of Beechtree aren’t significantly different, though they have had to implement a check-in at the door for staff members and constantly update information and protocols as more guidelines are added and the research on COVID-19 precautions evolves. Some of those guidelines, predictably, have been painful: she mentions specifically that the ban on nursing home visitors, while necessary, has been a hard adjustment for residents and one that required additional emotional work for nurses, to say nothing of the impact it has had on those residents and their families.

“It’s unfortunate, and it’s sad for the families and for our residents, but we’re doing everything in our power to make up for some of that,” Lynch said. “Doing activities with them, making them laugh, crafts, music, doing video conferencing with their family members. We’ve gotten a lot of good feedback from their families and from residents and that makes it all worth it.”

In the midst of the madness, National Nurses Week signifies to Lynch a chance for her staff to breathe, at least for a second, and take a moment -- even if they don’t demand it.

“It means a lot to acknowledge and celebrate the nurses that I’m working with, I get a lot of joy out of seeing other people being acknowledged for what they do,” Lynch said. “As a nurse, sometimes you forget that there’s even such a thing. We don’t think of ourselves as someone who needs that constant gratification from people celebrating us. But when it happens, it feels good.”

Same-day testing Quick COVID-19 results now available in Tompkins County Mat t Butl e r

fter Ithaca-based Rheonix received approval from the Food and Drug Administration on a same-day testing turnaround method for COVID-19 results, they have now formed a partnership with Cayuga Health to introduce the testing to Tompkins County.

Rheonix was granted authorization from the FDA yesterday, and can now use a “rapid sample-to-answer” test system which “enables the fully automated detection of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, directly from Georgia@ithacatimes.com 607-277-7000 x220respiratory samples.” Rheonix, which is based out of Newspaper: Cornell, designed the device that conducts the testing.

“We are thrilled to team with Rheonix, located right here in Ithaca. Their technology and expertise has enabled us to be able to provide same day results for COVID-19 testing – one of the quick, test turnaround times in our region,” states Martin Stallone, President & CEO of Cayuga Health.

Tompkins County will seek 91 furloughs

F

acing projected revenue losses over $10 million, Tompkins County will look to furlough 91 employees in the near future, according to Tompkins County Administrator Jason Molino.

The information came in a mid-year budget presentation update composed by Molino, who noted that normally he’d be preparing for next year’s budget at this time but due to the widespread economic impacts of the COVID-19 outbreak, adjustments will have to be made for this year.

The furloughs will take a variety of forms: 51 employees will take 12 week full furloughs, meaning they will not work for that entire time period; 18 will take 12 week 50 percent furloughs, so they will work reduced hours for that period. Eight others will take six week full furloughs, and an additional 19 will take six week partial furloughs. The move, Molino said, allows the employees to take advantage of New York State unemployment benefits, which have been extended to help people who are out of work as a direct result of the pandemic.

Laying out a range of outcomes, Molino said the county is preparing for something between mild and severe loss in total state aid: mild would be $3.8 million, or a 15 percent reduction, while severe would be $7.7 million, or 30 percent. That would result in, for the “mild” case, a projected $11 million revenue shortfall, which would swell to $17.6 million under the “severe” projections.

Molino presented the information to the Tompkins County Legislature on Tuesday night after a press briefing held with members of the media Tuesday afternoon. A range of departments will be affected.

The county’s overall economic health was also discussed by Molino, though exactly how bad that will turn out isn’t clear and continues to unfold. In terms of unemployment, Molino was able to say that the number of unemployment applications from Tompkins County residents was up 3,000 percent from March 16-April 19, higher than the state average and reflective of how hard one of the strongest economies in central New York has been hit by the pandemic.

layoffs—or, in Ithaca College’s case, moving forward with them already. The recent state budget has ICSD worried enough that the Board of Education penned a letter asking the federal government for more money in light of state cuts, while also approving a plan to cut the pay of spring season athletic coaches (who have been unable to work because of the closures) by 80 percent for the season.

There will at least be some Tompkins County representation in how the state proceeds with its economic reopening, as Cuomo’s selected list of over 100 advisors, announced earlier this week, includes Cornell president Martha Pollack as well as Tompkins Cortland Community College President Orinthia Montague.

Mikel Moss’ approach to therapy through theater

rowing up in Ithaca, Mikel Moss loved the time he spent doing drama, and realized he could see himself in new ways when he played a role. Aside from doing theater locally, as Mikel grew up, he also had a strong interest in psychology. He knew people who had lived through trauma and pondered what psychological orientation might help them heal?

“Having the Actor’s Workshop in Ithaca is an amazing opportunity,” Moss said. “Holly Adams, a renowned local actor and drama teacher, and I spoke often. Through dramatization and support, could people work through some of their pain to begin healing?

I began to believe that I could one day have a practice as a drama therapist and use theater to engage and support people’s healing.”

terrific,” he continued. “I studied all the Creative Arts Therapy offered—art, dance, drama.

Drama has an amazing way to engage people, but there is little hard data to support the viability of this type of therapy.”

As Moss delved into this field, he focused on the hard sciences, which had never been his strong point. “I wanted to study and create drama therapy, but I also needed to learn research methodology—the math and the science—to demonstrate how effective drama therapy is.”

Moss was accepted at Columbia University’s Clinical Psychology program for graduate school, one of the most competitive programs in the country. Moss asked his mother’s advice before heading back to NYC. She told him a graduate degree from Columbia was a golden ticket.

“As I began my studies, I was already planning what I wanted to do for my terminal degree (Ph.D.) to be at the top of my game. I arranged for my master’s studies to align with the research and data I would seek in my final academic program.”

Moss graduated with a master’s degree in Global Mental Health from the Teachers College at Columbia, with a triple minor in Global Mental Health and Trauma, Community Psychology, and Research Methods. All the pieces Moss had set out to weave together.

“It was a lot of work,” Moss said. “But I found I loved studying with amazing people.

And while I was there, I was able to bring to

life my commitment to diversity and equity.

I helped organize students and community members to achieve more equitable access to scarce resources. I was elected to serve as Diversity Senator in the Student Senate. My platform focused on bringing faculty, administrators, students and community members together. ‘What do the students and community members need? How can the University help provide what they need?’ We studied the University’s responsibility to assist at-risk, underfunded local public schools in the surrounding community and local transportation; always considering those least able to afford what they needed. When schools and transportation are safe, affordable and successful, neighborhoods thrive, and students who often live in the communities surrounding the university are benefitted too.”

A friend who graduated after Moss reported that the University put a limit on the events that student organizations at the Teacher’s College could initiate after Moss graduated.

But as Moss’s mother had told him, “Friction is how a fire is started.”

While completing his master’s studies at Columbia, Moss met a group of Aboriginal students and faculty touring American universities to develop opportunities for Aboriginal students to study outside of Australia. Meeting with this group of people, along with his interest in working in more diverse communities, clarified his next move: “When I applied to the University of Melbourne School of Population and Global Health Ph.D. program in Australia, I knew what I wanted to study, what I wanted to learn, and what I wanted to do for my thesis project… The Admissions Committee said, ‘We love this’ [and] I was accepted.”

In Moss’s Ph.D. studies, he has developed a drama therapy approach to explore themes to help his clients heal themselves. “People know best how to heal their own pain, their loss. But using drama can help them open up to themselves, so they can find their way. The work has been intense, but it is exactly what I have wanted to do all along.”

“When I complete my Ph.D., I will have the research foundation to spread the word that Drama Therapy works.”

Home now in Ithaca, Mikel is helping out in the community in which he grew up. “I am trying to help distribute food and resources, while asking movers and shakers, “Who from the community is not in this room where we are discussing this community’s needs right now? Who are we not reaching? How can we bring them in?’ As my mother says, ‘Build a longer table, not a higher fence.’”

Local author explores Ithaca’s cinematic history

hough it may seem improbable, the Ithaca of over a century ago was home to a small but vibrant silent film industry. Centering on the work of brothers Theodore and Leopold Wharton and their studio in Stewart Park (then known as Renwick Park), a diverse cast of imported and local talent helped to pioneer the golden age of the movie serial.

Between 1914 and 1919, the two capitalized on Ithaca’s diverse natural scenery, cosmopolitan atmosphere and enthusiastic citizenry.

Combining strong female leads, convoluted action-adventure plots, and daring stuntwork—usually performed by the principals themselves—Wharton Studio serials such as “The Exploits of Elaine” (1914), “Beatrice Fairfax” (1916) and “Patria” (1917) brought the brothers fame and pioneered lasting artistic conventions.

Slightly later, feature-length films such as “The Lottery Man” (1916) and “The Great White Trail” (1917) explored weightier dramatic and sociopolitical themes.

But it was over all too soon. Mounting

debts, personal squabbles and a rapidly changing industry—consolidating in Hollywood—forced the Whartons to close up shop in 1919. The two soon went their separate ways: Theodore to California and Leopold to Texas. Neither was able to recreate their earlier success. Printed on flammable nitrate film stock, much of the brothers’ work has been lost.

Written by Barbara Tepa Lupack and published last month by Cornell University Press, “Silent Serial Sensations: The Wharton Brothers and the Magic of Early Cinema,” is the first book-length treatment of this exciting historical episode. It’s an important, if sometimes dutifully plodding, contribution.

Lupack, a former academic dean at SUNY Empire State College in Rochester, is a distinguished literary and film scholar, with interests ranging from adaptations of the Arthurian mythos to early “race” filmmaking. “Sensations” weaves together brief plot summaries and more detailed analyses with—arguably the most fascinating tale of all—the story of Ithaca’s rise and

Although written with a distinctly academic tone and concerns, Lupack’s book will be of interest to anybody with a serious interest in silent film or local history. Before delving into the early biographies of the Whartons, the author begins with an enlightening discussion of the film serial. She investigates the serial’s roots in earlier popular literature and the genre’s refraction of topical subject matter into a developing nation-wide popular culture. Subsequent chapters trace a chronological path with the emphasis on the years of and immediately surrounding World War I. Both Theodore (18751931), born in Milwaukee, and Leopold (1870-1927), born in Manchester, England, grew up in Dallas and had diverse early careers in show business —eventually moving from theatre to moving pictures. I

really miss my friend Hugues Barbier. I met him sometime around 2010 or so, when he showed up in town and started bringing in odd genre films through Fantastic Fest to play at Cornell Cinema. Through him, I was able to connect with some really exciting genre people for interviews. Jim Mickle brought his excellent vampire apocalypse film “Stakeland” to town, and a few years later he was the toast of the indie world for his film “Cold in July.”

Hugues moved a while back (I knew this town wasn’t big enough to hold a guy like that) but the Ithaca chapter of Fantastic Fest is still going strong, with recent screenings of good horror-action-splatter stuff like “Color Out of Space” and “VFW.” Whenever I think of Hugues, I always remember that he hipped me to Quentin Dupieux’s “Rubber,” one of the weirdest and yet most compelling films I have ever seen. I’m sure one of the reasons I responded so strongly to a movie like “Rubber” is that I spend most of my days watching conventional American narrative films, so anything weird like “Rubber” would appeal. It’s all about this rubber tire in the desert that realizes it is a sentient being with dangerous powers of destruction. You know, that old chestnut.

Quentin Dupieux, who also spins French techno music as Mr. Oizo, is back with another incredibly strange film.

“Deerskin” (2019, 77 mins., Greenwich Entertainment Virtual Cinema) is available on VOD for fans of offbeat and unusual cinema.

Films like “Deerskin” are difficult to review, because what’s original and unique about them should be left to discover as a surprise. So, let’s see, what can I tell you?

In “Deerskin,” we meet Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) driving somewhere. He stops off at a rest stop gas station, stuffs his jacket into the toilet and kicks it with his foot. It turns out he’s driving to meet someone to blow all his money on a fringed deerskin jacket. The seller throws in a digital camcorder.

The guy takes a room in a small village hotel, where he meets the local bartender (Adèle Haenel of “Portrait of a Lady on Fire”). He tells her he’s a filmmaker, she tells him she’s an amateur film editor, and they begin collaborating on his latest “project”. And then the deerskin jacket starts talking to him…

That’s all you’ll get out of me. “Deerskin” is a complete success on its own bizarre terms. Its rules are its own, but at least it plays fairly by them, and like all good films, the resolution is both surprising and inevitable. If you’re tired of the same ol’ same ol’, the conventional and the

ordinary, “Deerskin” should croggle your head for 77 minutes. *** The first images we see in Rachel Mason’s “Circus of Books” (2020, 86 mins., Netflix) are home-video camcorder footage of an ordinary family making a meal in the kitchen, just another document of everyday life. But the mom and pop in the video are Barry and Karen Mason, the owners of a gay porn bookstore in Los Angeles called “Circus of Books.” From 1982 to its closing in 2019, the store was a major hub in L.A.’s gay community, and Barry and Karen ended up producing gay porn films in addition to the store.

All of this was kept secret. All the Mason kids knew was that their parents ran a bookstore, and they never went near the place. And now their daughter Rachel has made a rather amazing documentary that proves yet again that truth is stranger – and more interesting – than fiction. Just the saga of the Mason family business would be a story worth telling, but Karen had a successful career as a journalist, and Barry was one of the special effects technicians on film like “2001: A Space Odyssey”.

The film is also about the Mason’s kids coming to terms with their parents’ other life, and again there are surprises that are best not revealed here. I love documentaries that take me into other peoples’ lives, and while I have no interest in gay porn, I also say to each their own. Everyone has their struggles, and the more specific the human behavior onscreen is, the more universal it can be.

A

fter the news came down that NY schools would not reopen, I was a bit confused when my friend Ellice Switzer expressed—through social media—her deep disappointment that the Ithaca High girl’s lacrosse team would not have an opportunity to try to win their third consecutive sectional title.

The team’s eight seniors had been working hard to make that happen, and the word on the street was that they had their sights set on the state championship.

I was confused because I knew that Ellice was a lacrosse mom, but I was pretty sure her daughter was not a varsity player, so I called her. “My daughter is a Modified player,” Ellice offered, “but I am a member of the Youth Lacrosse Steering Committee, and I help run the youth program, and I have watched all of the girls come up through the program.”

Now I get it. It’s like they’re all her kids, in a sense.

“I can’t say I know all these players well,” Switzer (who also has a son in 10th grade) told me, “but they have all been

such great role models for the younger players. We were all really looking forward to watching them shine this year.” She added, “To his credit, (head coach) B.J. maintains a really strong connection with them to help them deal with it.”

Echoing the sense of loss that has swept over so many players and their families— in so many different spring sports—Ellice said, “We miss seeing the high school games, and now some of the summer tournaments have been cancelled. We don’t know what to do with ourselves. It seems our whole lives are structured around the sport.”

I also caught up with head coach B.J. Bliss, and I asked him how difficult it has been to manage this uncertainty in stages.

At first, it appeared schools might reopen in April, then it was pushed to mid-May, then it was lights out. Bliss (between online classes with his South Hill Elementary students) said, “We were fortunate to have a week of practice before the shutdown in March. It was nice to have that time together as a team, and then we switched

over to virtual team challenges, using Zoom and Google Hangouts. We also did virtual team challenges, focusing on workouts and stick work and such.”

As the situation unfolded, Bliss said, “We started to realize that this crisis was bigger than Ithaca High lacrosse, and again, that made us more grateful for that

hard they have worked and the high level of dedication they bring. Their work in the weight room, the extra sprints, the fact that they were always asking for harder workouts, doing whatever it takes to take the next step. Mostly, the biggest reward is being able to watch them develop into such remarkable young women, and that

The jury is still out on whether any summer tournaments will still take place this year, but five of the seniors have already committed to play in college. Two more will play club lacrosse at the collegiate level and another will play volleyball, so it’s not like their playing days have

week we did get to spend together on the field as a team. We saw that Section 8 and Section 11 cancelled their seasons, and while we held out hope, we saw the writing on the wall.”

When the news came, the coach said, “I reached out to our eight seniors and I told them that there can never be a plaque or a trophy big enough to commemorate how much all twenty-one of our players mean to this program. We could agonize over all the ‘what-ifs,’ and all the hopes and dreams we had, and while a state championship would have been the icing on the cake, it’s not the most important thing.” When asked to clarify, Bliss said, “It’s the other stuff, the bus rides after a big win—for that matter, after a big loss—watching how
