or the better part of a year, anti-natural gas activists and neighbors to a natural gas compression station up near Ellis Hollow have vocally opposed an expansion to the project intended to accommodate a greater amount of natural gas f lowing through their community.

On Monday night, those activists had a chance to meet face-to-face with the company’s engineers to ask questions about Dominion Energy’s proposed upgrades to the existing New Market Pipeline, object to the process in which it was approved and, for some, make a Hail Mary appeal to company representatives to partake in a voluntary – and legally unnecessary – review process with the Town of Dryden.

Of the nearly 100 people crammed into the meeting space of the Varna Community Center (many bearing signs and t-shirts expressing explicit opposition to the expansion of natural gas consumption), nearly 40 came w it h questions regarding a proposal to upgrade a pre-existing pipeline to allow for an increased quantity of natural gas to flow from its source in Northern Pennsylvania to the Hudson Valley, where it supplies heat to an estimated 3.6 million people, according to company figures.

The expansion is necessary, Dominion representatives said Monday, to accommodate the demands of the company’s two biggest customers in the state – Brook lyn Union Gas and New York State Electric and Gas – and their desire to purchase cheaper, domesticallyproduced gas rather rely on imports from Canadian gas markets.

I

t’s a well-known issue at rural hospitals across the nation: oftentimes, it’s just simply hard to fill all the positions needed to make a hospital hum, especially far from lucrative, well-paying jobs in big city hospitals.

Upstate New York, it seems, is no exception.

In order to drum up interest from future medical professionals to upstate New York, Iroquois Healthcare Alliance (IHA) has organized tours of medical facilities in the area, this year including Cayuga Medical Center among the several upstate, rural hospitals

the group visits in its annual rounds.

For various reasons, the medical profession – statistically speaking – seems to have had something of an aversion to the already-beleaguered hospitals ser ving the rural counties of Upstate New York: According to a 2015 report from the Healthcare Association of New York State, many doctors tend to stay in more lucrative urban areas where they can pay off their debts from medical school (amounting to an average of $183,000 for a member of the class of 2015, according to the Ameri-

While the project itself does not entail the building of a new pipeline, the upgrades to the compressor station were characterized as being a “limited amount of work,” by the Dominion representatives in attendance. However, a common theme of concern from those assembled was not the impacts of the work itself, but what it meant: a greater volume of natural gas flowing through the borders of the Town of Dr yden and, in the eyes of some, greater risk assumed.

Dominion, citing the logistics of “critical utilities infrastructure,” would not specify exactly what quantity the increase would entail at maximum capacity, saying their pipelines are rated according to pressure. The compressor station itself would allow the company to pump an additional, but unspecified, amount of gas at up to 900 pounds per square inch which, as members of the audience were quick to point out, ultimately meant a greater volume of gas, period.

York State, and the functions of various safety measures in place to isolate leaks when – or if – they happen. (Most of the leaks come, one representative said, from people not checking the ground before they begin a digging project).

Yet, as the site falls within an area containing an estimated eight wetlands and 11 creeks in the Cascadilla Creek watershed, there was some concern

– and scrutiny – as to how the company was planning around the site. One man, in an impassioned set of comments delivered to the sound of rousing applause and snapping fingers, said no risk – not even a minimal one – should be taken with our waterways. Local activist Walter Hang – who has helped to lead the charge against the pipeline’s increase in capacity – cited a legacy of spills

at the site, while considered closed by the Department of Environmental Conservation years ago, he still disputes as never being cleaned to standard, thereby nullifying the legitimacy of the state permits the under-construction project has already obtained. One person speculated on whether or not the pipeline would set a precedent to eventually expand natural gas consumption by an even greater degree in New York City and the Hudson Valley, noting the proposed natural gas plant in Dover, New York being weighed as a replacement for the notorious nuclear facility at Indian Point, which is slated for shutdown by 2021.

As the state has already provided the company w it h a ll t he necessar y approvals needed to move forward, little more can rea l ly be done to stop the project: Because the Town of Dryden has limited authority on federally-regulated utilities infrastructure, realistically the only thing town officials can do is to ask the company to voluntarily go through a special land use permitting process, said town supervisor Jason Leifer.

However, he said, it is possible for the town to write a letter or two, should they feel like it.

n the argument over whether or not to increase the legal age of tobacco purchase and sale to 21, one type of product, at least in Tompkins County, has been largely left out of the conversation. “E-cigarettes,” “vaporizers” and “vape pens,” all fall into the categor y of “electronic nicotine delivery systems.” With the legislature expected to vote on the matter Tuesday, May 2 (after this issue of The Times went to press) vendors are expressing dismay that they may soon be forbidden from selling their products to some of their most avid customers.

Charles McAvoy of WilkesBarre, PA, has two stores on the Ithaca Commons that would be impacted by the ban. Not only is he the owner of Headdies Pipe Shop and Vape Dragon, which sit across from one another on the Commons, but he recently signed a five-year lease on both properties.

Last year Headdies’ fiveyear lease expired, and when McAvoy resigned he decided to invest in the recently remodeled space across the street as well, “to share in the vision of the Commons 2.0,” McAvoy said.

The entrepreneur has three other Vape Dragon locations in Pennsylvania and planned to make the new Ithaca shop the flagship location of an expanded franchise. According to Tompkins County’s current smoking laws, an electronic nicotine delivery system is defined as “a personal electronic device that aerosolizes liquid or gel containing nicotine, flavorings, or other substances and produces an emission that may be absorbed or exhaled by [the] user.”

Under the new law being proposed, this classification of products would be included in the under-21 ban along with cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, powdered tobacco, continued on page 5

he main reason Herb Engman, Ithaca’s recently retired town supervisor, gave when he decided to come back to politics was his own sense of civic duty, a desire to continue a legacy of public service that began decades ago.

shisha, herbal cigarettes, liquid nicotine, rolling papers, smoking paraphernalia, and other tobacco products.

Of course, this means that McAvoy’s other business, Headdies, would also have to restrict those under 21 from buying glass pipes and other smoking devices. (McAvoy said the store currently cards everyone who enters to make sure they are over 18.)

But this troubles him less than the potential impact on the vape shop.

“My biggest concern is that I’m against cigarettes,” he said.

“I have a store that is devoted to helping people quit cigarettes.”

McAvoy is not a lone his assertion that vaping helps people quit smoking regular cigarettes.

McAvoy says he sells just as much vaping liquid that contains no nicotine as the kind that does and worries the nicotinefree products will be lumped in with all the other items included in the law.

Frennier told the legislature that he doubts changing the purchase age will make much of a difference given that the law does not prohibit the possession of tobacco products for those under 21.

So far, the field for the 11th district includes just Engman and local organizer Shawna Black, an activist and political newcomer.

Because of his background both serving in county office as well as supervisor for an entire town, Engman said he believes he would hit the ground running as a legislator, no learning curve to deal with or a serious brushing up on local issues needed. He said he recognizes the challenges of local government in the face of a different, albeit unpredictable, administration taking the reins of government at the federal level, and that at this time, the county “needs some folks with some experience” to be able to adapt to some of these changes quickly and effectively. With a high turnover of seasoned legislators opting not to seek re-election (including the seat occupied by longtime legislator Peter Stein, who Engman seeks to replace), Engman said he believes the times call for a steady hand at the county level; someone with experience and an ability to adapt quickly to the whims of both the federal and state administration, from dealing with various unfunded mandates to adapting to the challenges presented by limits outlined under the state’s cap on taxes. continued on page 10

Other Tompk ins County Legislators echo the old argument that if 18-year-olds are allowed to join the army then they ought to be able to smoke if they so choose.

As for McAvoy, he continues to pay $3,000 per month in rent for each of his two shops despite what he says is a hazy future for his businesses.

“If you start restricting the stores that interest college students, what you’re left with is what? Stores that only interest adults? Then you’ll see a drop in pedestrian traffic,” he said.

“If they went ahead and passed this law a year ago and I had the option I wouldn’t have renewed my lease. It’s too much of a risk.”

Ups&Downs ▶ Climate Marchers it was the second straight weekend in Ithaca with a march going down and – though more or less similar to the March for Science from the weekend before – it was pretty grand to see people still enthusiastic about shunning the sporadic whims of fancy held by the blathering hairpiece we have occupying the Oval Office.

Heard&Seen ▶ Cornell is researching a recent rise in the state’s black bear population. So far, researchers have estimated the average density of black bears in the southern tier of New York to be about 13 bears per 38.6 square miles – or about one bear for every 3 square miles. Bear densities decreased slightly farther north in the study region, supporting the idea that black bear ranges have been expanding northward.

Anyway, if you guys have bear photos, we’d love to see them, but please don’t go out looking for them. ▶ Grateful Dead day is coming up... And The State Theater has a pretty spectacular show lined up featuring the renowned tribute band, Dark Star Orchestra.

Even if you’re not a fan of the band, commemorating some Ithaca history – at a cost of $6.50 – is a steal in our eyes.

The Threats Of Dominion’s Project In Your Face, Burlington T N he Dominion New Market gas expansion is a danger to the health, safety, and property of the residents of Ellis Hollow and to all the people living along the 200 mile length of the pipeline corridor.

Compressors, such as the Borger Station on Ellis Hollow Creek Rd., pressurize gas to move it through the pipeline. Such compressor stations are known threats to public health.

This project involves building two new compressors (one in Horseheads and another in Georgetown), greatly expanding a third (in Minden), and adding microturbines and coolers to the Borger Station. It was permitted and approved without notice to, or public input by, Tompkins County residents.

Why should Tompkins county residents care about the expansion? The most immediate concern is air quality. The New Market expansion means there will be much more gas, an additional 100,000,000 cubic feet each day, going through the Borger Station via a pipeline that is 50 years old in places.

More gas means more emissions.

The emissions from compressor stations include methane, fine particulates, and a long list of chemicals including known neurotoxins, carcinogens, and endocrine disruptors. Exposure to these emissions causes both acute and chronic illness and is a particular threat to the health of children.

The Ellis Hollow Community Center, home to a childcare facility, summer camps, and the neighborhood pool is about 3,000 feet from Borger. Indeed, the pipeline runs right through the community center property.

While the local community is expected to absorb the external costs and be exposed to the risks, the gas will not be used by the community. It doesn’t make sense to put ourselves at risk for something that provides no essential benefit to our community.

Dominion has said that the proposed “upgrades” to the facility will not significantly increase emissions. How can that be, if there is an increased volume of gas coming through the facility? Dominion does not mention that this major facility will be processing this gas without the best available technology in place to reduce toxic emissions and protect air quality. Two of the three turbines are older models, installed in the 1980s.

The current industry standard requires significantly improved emission controls.

If Dominion is investing millions in this project, why aren’t they installing the best available equipment at the same time? Even more concerning to residents is the fact that the new compression facilities that are being built now are larger than for the volume of gas proposed. Is an additional pipeline in the works? The Dominion expansion alone will ensure that neither New York State nor Tompkins County will meet their stated greenhouse gas targets.

YourLetters Waving The Development Flag

B

esides a balanced viewpoint on the role of development in Ithaca, the only thing this purported piece of journalism is missing is the “(advertisement)” that newspapers typically run when they run up column inches selling some sort of product.

In this case the product is a pro-development piece of propaganda. Oh, the dreaded “regulations” that keep Ithaca from being economically developed! How can we banish groups that are attempting to protect some measure of historic character in our little city, such as the Historic Landmark Preservation Commission? How can we dismantle the forces of environmental extremism when they block a perfectly good apartment building because of some supposed erosion of Six Mile Creek?

Perhaps the Ithaca Times can run a piece applauding organizations that are looking out for the public interest, who work tirelessly to insure some measure of accountability from developers and their boosters (i.e the Chamber of Commerce) who swoon at their every proposal. Hey developers, cry me a river if the regulations get to be too much for you. Or better yet, go work on the federal level. Regulations there are being dismantled right and left. You should feel right at home.

Lifton did not include a cost estimate with her announcement, but did note that over 2.5 million customers still use the outdated system, which has yet to be replaced by alternatives like fiber optics. The bill will be formally introduced to the assembly later this week.

Tom O’Mara NY State Senate State Senator O’Mara announced that he was joining together with a group of state senators, businesses and nonprofit groups to form the New Yorkers for Affordable Energy Coalition. The group seeks to improve statewide access to natural gas for residential and commercial purposes.

“Natural gas has become a forgotten natural resource within our borders while it’s having an enormously positive impact across the nation for consumers and in terms of energy independence, job creation and the revitalization of manufacturing,” O’Mara said in a press release Monday.

Congressman Reed – a member of the committee dedicated to the crafting of tax policy – has been a popular interview on the topic, making appearances on both ABC World News, CNBC and MSNBC last week. Reed was sure that Congress would take another week, but would pass a spending plan successfully. An agreement on such a plan was reached by congressional leaders on Sunday night and a formal vote is set to take place by Friday. A formal whip count has not been made public and Reed, who says there’s always a small chance of surprise – said he believes in all likelihood the plan will pass in its current state.

Prior to the AHCA vote on Friday, the house did however pass several other healthcare related bills including one prohibiting pharmaceutical companies from monopolizing the industry which passed with almost unanimous support.

Other high profile votes are coming up in the house as well. President Trump’s round two at the American Health Care Act is in the works with Reed moving from “nay” to a “possible yes” on the plan. President Trump’s tax plan is also working its way through the halls of Congress at the moment. The congressman is in favor of the plan as presented.

Reed also announced Monday that he has included a measure in the spending plan to increase funding to West Valley, a site for nuclear waste cleanup in the western reaches of the 23rd District. Last week, Reed also met with a number of Cornell faculty members for a discussion on climate change, according to a report in the Cornell Daily Sun.

For The Sake Of The

LAKE S ixteen years ago, a document which, at the time, was considered to be a comprehensive plan to help restore and maintain the Cayuga Lake Watershed, was completed.

It was a living document, intended to be updated every five years. The initial idea was, that with every renewal of the plan, new challenges would arise, all needing to be met. It’s taken a bit longer than five years to produce the first update to this plan but, in version two of this plan – made public by the Cayuga Lake Watershed Intermunicipal Organization last month – these new challenges are plenty, one thing eminently clear: when it comes to the lake, its 785 square

mile watershed and the 45 municipalities within that watershed, there is still plenty of work to be done.

The triumph of the initial plan, was, at the time, largely in its unprecedented achievement of compiling enormous amounts of data about the lake and creeks to create a comprehensive portrait of the lake’s depths, its creeks and its wetlands. At the time, the plan’s objectives were focused more toward data and fact accumulation – a more static depiction of the lake at that time.

However, things have changed enormously over the past 16 years.

sumption and the growing threat of climate change have made this work critical to the future health of the lake. Today’s plan, to reflect these changes, is more dynamic focused on rapid changes and threats to the watershed and its human and natural communities, and includes steps on how to better protect this resource in an era of rapid change.

This, CLWIO leadership says, is a crucial part of the new plan.

“If we don’t step up and do things now,” said Tee-Ann Hunter, a member of the Ithaca Town Board and chair of intermunicipal cooperation for the group, “eventually we are going to risk damage.”

The Plan

Back in 2001, plans for the watershed did not consider the possibility of drought, of climate change or large-scale development from the energy and agricultural sector, much less the invasive species that have since plagued the waters of Cayuga Lake.

And with massive change comes the need for adaptation.

Having been granted funding from the New York Department of State in 2015, CLWIO – five years off its most previous update to the plan – got to work drafting what would later become the 2017 Watershed Protection Plan, a comprehensive guide not only to the challenges facing a sustain-

able future for the watershed, but also a set of recommendations for the communities within the watershed looking to do their part to improve the health of the region. Essentially an action-guide for the region’s advocates to bring to their municipal leaders, the plan stands primarily as an advocate’s handbook: After all, with New York’s status as a strong home-rule state, it really is up to each municipality to want to step up and help accomplish the goals set forth in the regional vision set forth by the watershed protection plan on their own. This is challenging because the watershed is not dictated by town or county lines: it’s humans vs. nature, the key to getting anything accomplished lying with powerful advocacy and the voluntary, orchestrated cooperation of numerous municipalities.

Because of the odd relationship between a municipality’s borders and that of the watershed, the priority level for some communities may be smaller than others with a greater stake in the lake’s health. So, what exactly is the carrot on the stick to get these communities to sign on?

“The hook is money; state funding for projects,” Hunter said. “You have to understand some of these municipalities have like 10 percent of their landmass within the watershed: they’re not as interested.”

Working around the central themes of maintaining tourism and improving water quality, the plan proposes a suite of landuse plans, practices and regulations meant to minimize pollution, erosion and sprawl as key to maintaining the health of the watershed, essentially drafting a plan for the lake and its tributaries that works beyond county lines. Across more than a dozen pages of recommendations, the organization pinpointed several areas in which improvement was needed: Consistent monitoring of the lake and its tributaries, from improving the self-reporting of phosphorus levels on farmland to invasive species profiling, is necessary for the restoration and protection of the watershed.

Plans to understand and mitigate stormwater runoff – which carries pollutants and sediment that threaten the health of the watershed – need to be created and the waterways, documented.

Supporting relationships, as well as planning with county Soil and Water Conservation District offices and local municipalities, is key to carrying out the goals of the plan. Focus could be around identifying projects, project partners, and sources of funding.

Public engagement efforts as well as edu-

cating people on the importance of the work – and how their actions affect the health of the watershed itself – is necessary.

In addition to a number of legislative actions, advocacy itself will play a major role in accomplishing the goals laid out in the watershed protection plan, whether it’s de-

2. Advocate for watershed protection projects, such as ditch management and waterfront restoration efforts, to your local planning board. Emphasize access over ownership!

3. Get your septic system inspected, if you live within a designated wetland area.

4. Support the educational efforts of the Cayuga Lake Floating Classroom and the Cayuga Lake Watershed Network and ask for the creation of educational opportunities for area school children.

5. Be conscientious of what trees or brush you cut down: it may be preventing erosion from taking place.

6. Take care to prevent the spread of invasive species, like the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, through the cleanest, most natural pest controls recommended by the United States Department of Agriculture.

veloping curriculum to work into the area’s science classes to improving access to the lake – whether through the creation of new beaches or otherwise – to reinforce the idea of Cayuga Lake as a public attraction, rather than simply someone’s backyard water feature.

Of course, to describe the lake you must understand the lake – all 38 or so miles of it, as well as the waters which feed into its nearly 500 foot depths. This has taken a massive volunteer effort, undertaken by numerous activists who, since 2007 or so, have taken it on themselves to monitor and collect data of all the streams and creeks feeding into the southern end of the lake. Today, there

is an unprecedented amount of knowledge and understanding on the southern end of Cayuga Lake, its challenges and true status better recognized than ever before.

Of course, it’s only a start.

“This is a big, complicated lake,” said Lambert. “We’re still trying to get a grasp on it.”

Challenges

Since the first plan was issued, climate change and the ensuing extreme weather patterns within the watershed have resulted in changes to both wildlife and the region’s prominent agricultural industry, affecting everything from the migration patterns of the area’s birds to how smaller industries, like syrupmakers and vineyards, do business. Meanwhile, shifting political and economic priorities among the dozens of small communities around the lake have reflected greater issues at the state and federal level, impacting extensively the way in which municipalities choose to spend their money.

Many may be looking to repay debt service on old infrastructure projects or account for lost revenues, whether from state spending or declines in the tax base, that may dissuade them from spending on environmental protection measures.

As far as funding for these projects go: “We’re in a powerhouse here,” said Hilary Lambert, Steward of the CLWIO. “Ithaca’s a powerhouse, Lansing’s a powerhouse: but Fleming, Scipio Center… not so much.”

Adding to the reluctance of many municipalities to partake in the plan is their orientation: as the plan points out, “much of the watershed’s land area is distant from the lake, making it difficult for some residents to see a direct connection,” even though the creeks and streams running through their borders run all the way to the lake.

“The watershed is further divided by administrative, municipal, county, agency, development and regional boundaries,” the plan reads. “The north and south ends of the lake are culturally and politically different... these characteristics make it difficult to encourage a unified watershed capable of protecting its water resources.”

The new plan, says Hunter, is intended to give these municipalities a nudge in the right direction to not only convince them of the importance of environmental protection spending, but to connect municipalities with the resources – a la state money set aside specifically for this kind of thing – that will allow them to afford it.

“We have to restructure the municipal working group to tackle these problems,” Hunter said. “I guess the hook is there’s Th e

some help there now… it’s not just about writing grants, there are partners, there’s a full time staff person to help with this… increasingly, people are beginning to understand the value of this resource.”

Does It Matter?

Ultimately, the main selling point of the plan (beyond environmental concerns, of course), is a simple one: A healthy watershed, the plan states, makes good economic sense for the Finger Lakes’ $2.9 billion tourism industry, supporting 59,293 jobs in 2015. Of that income, tourism in the Finger Lakes generated $863 million in direct labor income and $1.44 billion of indirect and induced impacts, an amount which, according to a 2015 study, offset $472 dollars per household in additional spending to maintain the same level of government revenue, without tourism-generated state and local taxes. Adding to this, the region’s tax base is tightly linked to lake proximity, the plan citing the town of Varick, where approximately 80 percent of all taxable property coming from lakefront property, as an example.

“Those tax revenues would decline when living on the lake became less appealing if lake quality were to diminish, and remaining residents would have to scramble to support critical services including schools and fire departments,” the plan said. “Protecting Cayuga Lake and its wider watershed’s water quality is essential to continued community prosperity.”

Plenty of figures like this are included in the plan, primarily because they need to be: as an advocacy action plan, the proposal is meant to push municipalities into voluntary action. As such, the power to sell this plan, it seems, will fall to the hands of the people.

“The thing I’ve noticed more and more is there seem to be far more engaged citizens than there were 15 years ago,” said Lambert.

“Everybody’s got an opinion, they’ve got the internet and a lot of local communities are deeply engaged in what we’ve done here.”

For over 30 years, New York State has set aside the first full week in May to focus on its abundant water resources, highlight water issues and encourage stewardship.

This year’s theme is: “Nonpoint Source Pollution”. Nonpoint source pollution is the leading remaining cause of water quality problems impacting drinking water supplies, recreation, fisheries and wildlife. The theme was chosen for this year’s Water Week because 2017 marks the 30th anniversary of the Clean Water Act 1987 amendment that added Section 319.

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, primary care physicians – the most in-demand profession – earn, on average, approximately $195,000 annually, compared with $284,000 for physicians in other specialties. A pay disparity exists even within New York state, as primary care physicians in the rural upstate communities earn about $20,000 to $30,000 less on average than in New York City or even Albany.

This, in part, has contributed to a sector where a vast majority of rural hospitals – which rely heavily on primary care physicians in general – have difficulty recruiting talent. According to that same HANYS study, 81 percent of hospitals reported PCPs are very difficult to recruit, while 84 percent indicated that recruitment of PCPs is “one of their critical strategies for improving access to care” despite record enrollments in medical schools nationwide.

Amelia Trigg, marketing manager for IHA, said the tours have been running since 2013, and that it was their first time coming to CMC. Trigg said the alliance’s goal with the tours is to revitalize the recruitment process for upstate NY hospitals. IHA is connected to students through the New York chapter of the American College of Physicians, and targets potential PCPs it thinks could have interest in spending at least part of their careers in rural New York.

IHA had been previously funding the tours by themselves, but as evidence grew their recruitment services were necessary, they have been allocated $100,000 in each of the last two state budgets, including the one recently passed by the State Assembly for 2017-2018.

Recruitment issues are universal, but the percentage of hospitals recruiting PCPs are significantly higher upstate: where about 13 percent of downstate hospitals have a need for PCPs, 29 percent of upstate hospitals (non-rural) and 26 percent of rural hospitals in general are needing. This matters: according to a review by the Primary Care Development Corporation, nearly 1,841,000 people – 9.5 percent of the

“When I was town supervisor, I was working a lot with the county, so I know most of the key staff in the county and almost all of the legislators fairly well,” Engman said. “I think I can go in and won’t spend two years building trust, not having to learn how to put together legislation, getting allies and how to win a vote. I know all that stuff. For someone who’s never been in government, that’s a steep learning curve. It takes a while to figure out.”

As for issues pertinent to the local discourse, Engman said the issue of housing – like for many candidates – is one of particular interest, saying that while the county has been “great” at producing studies about housing, without land-use authority the county has little ability to move projects in the right direction. Because of this, Engman proposes a means of leveraging Cornell and Ithaca College – whose student bodies occupy a vast proportion of the local housing stock – into housing more of their students by the lure of withholding various county services, similar to Engman’s early proposals to withdraw fire protection from IC unless it paid up. But beyond a greater contribution from the county’s institutions of higher learning, Engman sees opportunity moving

William Carroll, a third year internal medicine resident from McGill University in Montreal who participated in the tour and is interested in a career as a PCP, said he was interested in coming to Upstate NY to take advantage of the opportunities it presents as a lifestyle location.

Though he will have had some work experience New York and Long Island once he graduates, Carroll said his interest in post-graduate life there is minimal.

“The opportunity for more open space, living right near the mountains, lifestyle is a really big thing,” Carroll said. “Also, having the opportunity to work in a smaller system where you don’t have to deal with the big bureaucracy and all that.”

After the tour, Carroll, who had never been to Ithaca before, was impressed with CMC’s overall facilities, somewhat surprised at the breadth of services the hospital was able to provide for a place that wasn’t in a major city.

“I was pleasantly surprised, I just thought it would be smaller,” Carroll said, marvelling at CMC’s considerable size. “The amount of speciality services they have was more than I thought.”

He said medical students in general don’t look to upstate New York, or rural locations in general, at least in part as a result of wanting the more conventional “big city life,” despite the sometimes prohibitively high costs of living in New York City.

That’s one of the bigger, though less tangible, challenges that rural places face: not only trying to sell a lower-paying job, albeit with lower living costs, but also selling a daily life that doesn’t have quite the glamour of New York City or places like it. Carroll is sold on upstate, but the numbers show he is the exception, not the rule.

“They want to live in the city, they want to live in the urban environment with the restaurant and bars,” he said. “They want the cultural stuff that they think is only there, but it’s here too.”

On Wednesday, the Wells College baseball team — competing in its maiden voyage season — will take the field against the Bombers. This game will be special because Wells is coached by David Valesente, whose father, George, has been in the Bombers’ dugout since Jimmy Carter was President.

The game against Wells is a nonconference game, but the Bombers will be bringing all the mojo they can muster to Rochester this weekend, given a sweep of St. John Fisher could potentially bring the Empire 8 tournament to Ithaca. I say “potentially” because the Bombers will need some help from Utica. If Fisher loses to Utica on Thursday, the Bombers will have the opportunity to go for the sweep and win the right to host. In any case, they are in the tournament, and will be gunning to win the Empire 8 title and its automatic bid to the NCAA’s.

Also on South Hill, the top-seeded Bomber women will host the Empire 8 softball tournament, starting on Friday, and the top-two seeds — Ithaca and St. John Fisher — appear headed for a big showdown for the conference title. I mentioned this last week, but I will do so again because it will give softball fans a chance to see one of the nation’s premier pitchers, Fisher’s Lindsey Thayer. The Bombers handed Thayer a rare loss earlier this season, but she’s in a groove, recently tying an NCAA record by striking out 21 batters in a 7-inning game.

That’s right: not a single batter put the ball in play.

The Bombers have an ace of their own in Haley Congdon, who is 5-0 in Empire 8 play, and boasts a very stingy ERA of 1.09.

Thing #1: I watched my daughter, Hannah, dig into the batter’s box for her lastever at-bat at Harrington Field, the Alfred Saxon’s home venue. I flashed back to thousands of at-bats over hundreds of games dating back to when Hannah played for Viva Taqueria (in the Ithaca Youth Bureau’s Dessie Jacobs League when she was 7 yearsold), and I knew that whatever happened, I would always remember this moment.

Alfred was trailing by a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, there was one out and a there was runner on second. Hannah drilled the first pitch into left field, moving the runner to third, and then slid across home plate with the walk-off winning run two batters later. It was awesome: just like we planned it out 14 years ago.

Thing #2: The next day, my 13 year-old daughter, Rhiana, took the mound for her first-ever appearance in a Modified game.

She was supposed to play JV ball, but an archaic test from 1948 — known as the Tanner Scale — is used to ascertain the level of a player’s physical development, and Rhiana found the test invasive and humiliating and thus chose to play Modified.

Twenty-one batters and 17 strikeouts later, I was a proud dad.

Thing #3: The next day, my 24 year-old daughter, Audrey, called me and said “Dad, clear your schedule for Sept. 23. As a Syracuse alum, I got an early shot at tickets, and we’re going to see Paul McCartney.” Seeing Sir Paul is a major Bucket List item for me, and I will likely cry through the entire concert.

Thing #4: I was fortunate enough to attend the 17th annual Community and Coaches vs. Cancer event at the Country Club of Ithaca, and the fundraiser — cochaired by Bill Perkins and Richie Moran — brought together researchers, donors and sponsors for a classy and productive evening. The event was a lot of fun, and you heard it here first: Retired Ithaca College football coach Mike Welch will someday be asked to join the cast of Dancing With the Stars. Man, that guy has moves.

osewater, nettle tea, astragalus extract and much more flowed freely Thursday night, as licensed local acupuncturist and herbalist Amanda Lewis guided a small but captivated audience through the possible options to fight seasonal sicknesses through the use of natural, herbal treatments.

This particular event was focused on natural remedies for respiratory allergies, a common dilemma faced as the seasons transition and pollen abounds. Much of the products shown and tested are available at GreenStar.

The session featured a discussion on the history of each of the aforementioned medicines with which Lewis is familiar. The Chinese medicine is based around the concept of Qi, which is basically life energy, and the excesses or deficiencies of Qi that may exist in the body. Ayurveda is centered on categorizing people into three types: Vata (more energetic, lively), Pitta (also high energy, can swing between emotional and intellectual), and Kapha (lower energy, quieter).

A group of about 10 people, ranging from college student to retirees, from the community were in attendance, all listening intently as Lewis went through her history in medicine and the wide variety of natural materials she uses, or has experience with, in her daily life. Treatments for everything from migraines, congestion, sneezing, trouble sleeping, were all examined and shown, covering the spectrum of the normal complaints of seasonal allergy-sufferers. Most of these symptoms were explained through the lens of Lewis’ Eastern medicine background: a migraine could be explained by an excess of Qi energy concentrated high in the body, while people who fall under the Vata criteria are more likely to deal with extra sneezing.

Lewis became interested in herbal remedies at an early age, fueled by a profound connection she felt with nature. She went on to study Chinese medicine in China for a year after obtaining a master’s degree in Colorado. She now owns the PADMA Center for Natural Remedies, which specializes in alternative takes on some traditional medicines as well as other physical therapy methods such as massage therapy and acupuncture — among others. She also studied Western herbs in college. Since she began practicing, she has also mixed in ayurveda teachings, which are holistic medicines originating thousands of years ago in India. All were employed throughout Thursday’s presentation.

The event was held at the Classroom at GreenStar, which hosts regular meetings on cooking, medicine and other wellness topics. Lewis acknowledged in response to an audience question that, similar to more conventional pharmaceuticals, there is some reason for hesitation when it comes to utilizing an herbal remedy, and some necessity for self-monitoring to recognize what works and what doesn’t. She encouraged consultation with an herbalist to properly guide someone who is new to the concept.

“That’s the tricky thing, all these substances, they have pros and cons, reasons to use them and not use them,” she said, also noting the way Western cultures can be susceptible to jumping on health trends. “Part of that is our culture, we find something is good and then you take tons of it and then you get sick. In Asian cultures, they have a tendency towards moderation, and these Chinese medicines have been used for thousands and thousands of years.”

The federal government’s stance on alternative medicine is tepid, and official pages on Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health say the effectiveness of both has not been able to be proven or disproven yet, noting most research efforts have been inconclusive or fundamentally flawed in procedure.

Regardless, Lewis said her faith in nature is what led her to years of study in the field, instead of taking a more traditional Western medicine route.

“Just that philosophy in nature, the healing power of nature,” Lewis said. “I was using plants to heal myself for colds and flus, and they worked and I just really enjoyed that, like combining herbs and making teas for myself. I was reading about it all the time.”

Lewis has a PADMA office in Ithaca on West Buffalo Street, which includes several practitioners as well as locations in Binghamton and Oneonta as well. She said there is not much difference in terms of products sold among the locations, though Ithacans seem more willing to use the products routinely, as opposed to solely consulting her after an ailment has arisen.

“I think people in Ithaca tend to be a little more health conscious, and because of that they’re more likely to come see me preventatively,” she said. “Which is great, it works for both, but it’s nice to get to work with someone preventatively.”

Mostly Motown is a group with a passion

thaca musician and Vitamin L founder, Jan Nigro, first heard the deeply soulful music of Motown when he was a teenager living in the Bronx. It would prove

a lifelong passion.

“When I was about 13, I remember hearing The Supremes on the radio,” Nigro recalled. “I didn’t know who they were at first; I just knew I liked their sound. Then I saw them on the Ed Sullivan Show and had an instant crush on Diana Ross (who

didn’t?),” he laughed.

Motown’s popularity was blossoming, and Nigro was hearing the seeds of a musical and social revolution. It was a special time.

“I began to hear more and more Motown tunes on the radio,” he noted.

“The Miracles, The Four Tops, Martha and the Vandellas — it was to be a part of the coming-of-age soundtrack for the Boomers, along with the Beatles and the other British Invasion bands.”

to Ithaca, Nigro had a Motown vision. He had an idea about a chorus that he thought the Community School of Music might want to work with. A chorus called Mostly Motown.

“I knew of the famous Mostly Mozart Festival, and I thought this would be a fun little play on that phrase,” he said. “I also thought since a lot of people like Motown music, maybe we could get enough people to sign on to make a group out of it. CSMA put it in their brochure and we waited to see if anyone was interested. Well, a lot of people showed up, and that was the beginning of the group.”

Mostly Motown is a diverse group of community members. A convergence of doctors, teachers, office workers, massage therapists and carpenters with the love for a sound from their youth. The group is made up of mostly baby boomers and soars through its appreciation and want for developing its talents within the collective.

“I’ve been fortunate to have had a wonderful bunch of people in the group,” Nigro noted. “Fun loving, dedicated and talented people who are supportive of each others’ efforts.”

There’s more to the group than just Motown though, hence the moniker, Mostly Motown. And the creative platform offers the group a chance to drift to a place where things are infinitely positive.

“In addition to the singing we do some comedy as well,” Nigro explained. “Comedic medleys and little skits. We have some very talented comics in the group,” he laughed. “[Rehearsals] function as a respite from the madness of today’s world and an opportunity to sing, laugh and enjoy each others’ company.”

For Nigro, Motown is a family legacy, and a musical form that’s stood the test of time. His sister (the late, great singer-songwriter Laura Nyro) was also a lover and creator of Motown music.

“When we’d have an occasional singing get together with other people, there would always be some Motown tunes in the mix,” Nigro noted. “She also recorded a classic album of Motown songs with Labelle called, It’s Gonna Take A Miracle.”

“Some music from my youth sounds juvenile and amateurish when I hear it now,” Nigro continued. “But not Motown.

The songwriting was terrific and the singers were too. Great arrangements with great musicians playing them. I like the sentiments as well: romantic and poignant.” •

rowing up on the sun-drenched beaches of Southern California, Michael Miller was a kid who found solace in the world of skateboarding.

“I was 10 years old and some skater guys lived in our complex,” Miller noted last weekend. “And I was the annoying little kid who was always like, ‘Can I ride your board?’” he laughed.

The persistence paid off. After the skaters explained to Miller he had to actually stand on the board and not just sit on it to ride it, they eventually started bringing him along wherever they went.

“They started blindfolding me and taking me to hidden skate spots, just to be silly,” he laughed.

“Those guys took me under their wings and pushed me into the skateboard world — and I never looked back.”

Ithacans best know Miller as DJ Mike Judah, whose reggae and dancehall spinning is a staple on WICB FM and at clubs like The Dock and Lot 10. But Miller is a prolifically talented skateboarder as well, with a rich past and a deep passion for the sport. For the past six years he’s helped shape Ithaca’s premiere skateboard festival, Ithaca Skate Jam, into a dynamic and nationally recognized force. This was the first year Miller was the primary event coordinator.

“I moved to Ithaca around the same time Jason and Katie Salfi from Comet Skateboards moved here,” he said. “I remember meeting them and thinking we should really do something on

Buffalo Street. …

[Jason] really birthed the Skate Jam and worked hard with it up until last year.

This year he was too busy with his personal businesses and I was like, ‘I got this — I’ll take care of it.’”

Miller’s no stranger to organizing large events, with a background in some pretty big-time endeavors. He worked with the Vans Warped Tour as the Skateboard Coordinator from ’95-’99. He quit in ’99 to open his own business and when he and his wife found out they were having their second child, they considered a change of scenery.

“We decided we didn’t want to raise him in Southern California,” Miller explained. “So we looked at a lot of communities throughout the country and thought the Fall Creek Neighborhood looked like the best spot. There were a lot of young progressive families and a really good school district.”

“In my mind I was sacrificing the world I knew and was striving in, to raise my kids in a better atmosphere,” he continued. “To give them something that I never had. My youth was pretty rough. We were in and out of homelessness throughout my childhood.”

Ithaca proved to be a place far beyond Miller’s imagination. A place that almost seemed too good to be true.

“Besides the skateboarding community I never knew what community was,” he said. “I grew up in urban sprawl in Southern California in the poorest neighborhood in the richest county in the country (Orange County); and when we moved here it was like fantasy world,” he laughed.

“People were so happy and so kind that it took a

This year’s Skate Jam is packed with star riders, events, DJs, bands and food.

Skate Jam will — for the first time in its history — feature a second day at the Ithaca Skate Park with an all-ages Park Camp with contests for every age group, and performances by the New Roots Rock Band and the Crucial Reggae Social Club.

The fact that kids of all ages get to jam this year is something Miller is psyched about.

“The key thing to understand about the second day is how exciting it is for the kids,” he said. “It’s their chance to have the park all to themselves.

The festival will also feature the documentary, Made in Venice, Saturday night at the State Theatre. The film is about the birth of skateboarding, its ascension and the historical role Venice Beach played. Miller grew up skating at the mystical beach, and the film is something immeasurably close to his heart.

“Venice is where I found my spirituality,” he said. “I know all those skate people out there and it’s really where I came from. The crazy coincidental thing is (even though I really don’t believe in coincidences), is that Dan Levy was born and raised in Syracuse and moved to Venice like twenty years ago. He’s a photographer and worked with Juice Magazine and was really instrumental in photographing the early scene out there. And when he found out we were showing the film, he was like, ‘I’m there; I’m coming.’ He’ll do an intro and a Q&A after the movie.”

Sunday will also feature some world champion freestyle skaters doing clinics and performances and showing some breathtaking nuance.

This is the place where street and pool skating merge into one infinite groove: a thing of art and transcendence.

“When people see these guys on Sunday they’re going to be like, ‘What the heck?’” Miller laughed.

A One-Man Family Drama Throw Pitchfork is a tour de force

S

uch is the power of Alexander Thomas’s story-telling, that when he describes the throwing of the pitchfork of the title of his one-person play, if you are in the path of his gesture you might feel the sharp breath of its passage.

In this heart-felt, riveting coming of age tale, Thomas resurrects his turbulent upbringing in Albany, NY, dominated by a towering man of rage and drink, his father Willy. We meet Willy first, scrapping with some hounds across the way (their snarls and barks will return with a vengeance later) and calling for his four sons: Sammy, Jesse, Cleve (he pauses, momentarily confused) ... and Alexander. His mantra for his progeny is ‘don’t be like me. I’m shit.’

Jesse proves a chip off the block, except

slicker. He boasts and taunts and flaunts his physicality. He spiels off his thievery as if heroic derring-do, and lays the blame on others’ stupidity: it’s just dumb to leave a credit card laying right there on the table, not even hidden in a drawer, or a billfold.

He counts jail-time as a natural part of his journey through manhood.

Sammy is an escape artist, using drugs to deaden the scars of his childhood. We learn he didn’t start using until he started dealing, and sampling the supplies. He is proud he hasn’t resorted to alcohol like Willy. At one point, Thomas takes off his belt, winds it round his arm and pulls out a syringe, all with dead nonchalance.

Cleve is the third child, a dreamer, a reader, a lover of Shakespeare, friends with some white ‘hippie’ types and a target of bullies. ‘Uncle Tom’ is among the lightest of insults his older brothers throw at him.

A Vision from Argentina

South American director is bold and real

t’s good to be shaken off our predictable paths, and Ithaca’s Cherry Arts productions do that regularly –– with a sense of whimsy, irony, and wonder. Last week two highly intimate one-acts took us into new spaces, introducing the work of the Argentine playwright and filmmaker Santiago Loza.

Though Loza, 46, is known throughout Latin America, this is the first time his plays have been translated to English –– courtesy of Cherry artistic director Sam Buggeln working with Buenos Aires playwright Ariel Gurevitch and Alejandro Tantanian, artistic director of Buenos Aires’ Teatro Cervantes.

For Winter Animals, in which a father, a rural rancher, visits his bookish son’s tiny, spare apartment in Buenos Aires, tiered viewers surrounded a small area in one dim corner of the vast room. The low lighting,

by E.D. Intemann, effectively suggested the son’s desolation and created a sense of intimacy, even complicity, with what transpired.

The father’s few-days stay is awkward for both men, who want to connect but are painfully inept. Johnny Shea’s splendidly delivered son is terse, withdrawn, abrupt and grudging in his communication, yet there’s affection in his willingness to please.

As his father, Dean Robinson is irritatingly but forgivably paternal –– loquacious, self-absorbed, full of advice tempered with apologies and good intentions. This brilliant portrait is incredibly human, and that’s the power of Loza’s characterizations –– the latter part of magical realism.

The absurd touch here comes early on: Inside the small apartment’s refrigerator lives a young woman. Oh, and she’s nude.

There’s a thematic connection we later learn on: As a boy, the son riffled through his father’s private things and discovered, to his fascination and disgust, a pen, which when tipped, revealed a woman’s clothed figure turning to nudity.

Sexuality is a bond men share, and the father, fond of his wife and appreciative of all women, talks about it openly, unintentionally unnerving his son, who may be homosexual. One man exposes, pokes, explores, advices, reminisces, shares; the other conceals and retreats – their ages and experiences worlds apart.

The woman –– far beyond a symbol of sexuality –– emerges as a confidante and protectress of both. When Helen T. Clark entered in a pale greenish light, for a moment she seemed clothed in thin parchment. Skin without blemish, a woman-girl’s body, remarkably perfect, her nakedness a 3–9,

Tagging along with his beloved brother Cleve is Alexander—a bouncing, cheerful, zig-zagging innocent of four years of age, repeating phrases, playing Superman, turning circles in place, imitating his dad’s ‘funny walk.’ Somewhere between four and eight years old, Cleve tosses him a play

by Shakespeare and Alexander goes wild with delight as he discovers the witches’ chants, re-enacting the cauldron scene with gusto, imagining grabbing a toad, and then becoming that toad as it begins to sizzle in the boiling water. Better than Saturday morning cartoons.

In Thomas’s re-enactment, none of these men—two generations of an AfricanAmerican family—are cartoons. He awards his subjects humor, liveliness, and a sharp take on their circumstances. Each son has a sharp desire to make it out of their father’s shadow. It’s the lessons they take from Willy and from the racist nation they are growing up in that differentiate them.

Thomas’s mother also shows up briefly, taking the young Cleve and Alexander down south, to see relatives in Georgia.

This great adventure turns sour as Alexander encounters the realities of the Jim Crow south (it appears to be the early 60s.)

Just when we think we might have direct counter to the men’s swaddled communication.

Clark was poised, flirty and charming in speech but asexual in her body –– a fascinating, understated performance.

Samuel Buggeln thoughtfully directed these three fine actors as they explored layers of connection and necessary distance.

When the insomniac son finally falls asleep on his father’s chest, the woman asks the man if he’s worried his son will turn out weird. “No,” he replies, I’m worried he’s going to turn out sad.”

That kind of startling honesty marks Loza’s work, seen again in a different light in Nothing to Do with Love (Makes Me Envious), the second one-act, here directed

by Norm Johnson. This time the audience occupies a close semicircle near the main stage, and the sole actor, Susannah Berryman, stands below the stage, almost in our midst.

She’s not wholly alone –– there’s a dressmaker’s dummy she’s talking to, chattering animatedly, recalling the most memorable experience of her life. An accomplished seamstress, she was once sought out by the famous Argentine singer and film star, Libertad Lamarque, known as “The Sweetheart of the Americas.”

everyone “figured out,” the writing takes a deft turn. We learn Willy’s own childhood story: sneaking out to find a fishing spot with his own pa away from the whites, loving rural Georgia, then being thrown into jail for life at 14 for simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The dog sounds return as Willy becomes the dog boy, training the prison hounds by being their prey. It profoundly recasts Willy and lends true tragedy to his story.

Tyler M. Perry’s beautiful wood plank set and subtle, every-shifting lighting are story-tellers as well, along with Sergey Levitskiy’s spare but evocative soundscape. Sara Lampert Hoover directs with her characteristic light touch.

Powerful, uplifting. Please see it. •

gown from precious fabric for Libertad, she finds herself visited by a man announcing “La Señora” –– and to her astonishment, Evita sweeps into the room. She’s heard of the seamstress’ skill and seeks something –– when her eye lands on the nearly finished dress. She pronounces it hers.

The dilemma the seamstress faces –– unable to disappoint either venerated, powerful woman –– culminates in an apotheosis of sorts. Able to live without men, secure in her talent, the dressmaker opts to honor herself in a flamingly dramatic conclusion.

Though this play could have used some cutting, Berryman’s performance was inspired –– personable and passionate. For audiences, it’s deeply satisfying to see gifted local actors with rich roles they can dig into. Loza has shared ordinary yet unique characters with us, and neither skin nor silk will ever look the same. • Barbara Adams, a regional arts journalist, teaches writing at Ithaca College.

t’s hard to write about one of your favorite bands of all time. I mean where do you start? I guess at the beginning.

Phoenix psychedelic punk legends the Meat Puppets entered my stratosphere a long time ago. I actually bought two records by them, ’91’s Forbidden Places and ’94’s Too High to Die, at the same time from the now defunct (along with most every other record store I ever loved), Downtown Discs in Burlington, Vermont.

What was the next week like? Transcending. Finally, a band that’s composite

parts (art, groove, speed, psychedelia, punk, experimentalism) forged a totality that touched upon virtually every musical form I dug. And this was just the tip of the Meat Puppets iceberg.

For over 30 years, the Meat Puppets — formed by brothers Curt and Cris Kirkwood and drummer Derrick Bostrom — have ruled the underground (and above ground: Too High to Die reached gold) scene, and here in 2017, they’ve found themselves, in many ways, right back at the start.

“It’s a little different now,” bassist and singer Cris noted. “But in many ways we’ve come full circle. We started out in a van and then found some commercial success (we had an AV at one point). And now here we are, back in the van,” he laughed.

The Meat Puppets were one of the first bands on Greg Ginn’s (Black Flag) legendary label, SST Records. The company released early recordings from behemoths like the Minutemen (Mike Watt’s opening up Tuesday night), Husker Du, Saint Vitus, Soundgarden and Sonic Youth. SST became, unquestionably, one of the most influential labels of all time.

“I’m very found of those early years,” Cris said. “Black Flag saw a us few times on the road and eventually asked us on tour;

and then SST signed us shortly thereafter.

Those were some exciting times.”

Where Black Flag and other hardcore bands bludgeoned crowds with nonstop hardcore fury, the Meat Puppets (whose first record, Meat Puppets, was actually pure hardcore punk), offered an infinite amalgamation of musical forms. Through punk, the band found a musical avenue to enter, and never stopped there, forging a sound that ceded to nothing but pure creation.

Kirkwood’s musical education was a big part of the band’s variance.

“When I saw Deliverance in like ’74, I decided to pick up the banjo and started playing bluegrass,” he explained. “It really opened my heart to music, and I started really getting into the technical aspect of it, and then one day it was like ‘holy s---, the melody’s there.’”

“When I started playing the bass I really got into jazz,” he continued. “And then punk rock happened, and Derrick was really interested in all the ‘cool’ stuff, so we were immersed in punk rock 7 inches and cassettes and I thought, I could do this. So when Curt and Derrick asked my to play with them, I went down and did it, and that was that.”

A while back, my two brothers and I (who were in a psychedelic rock band called Soul Feather at the time) saw the Meat Puppets live. They opened up with the insanely magical “Sam,” and proceeded to play the greatest and fullest sounding show I’d ever seen. It was absolute pureness. Being there with my brothers was something distinctive, for I’d always felt a connected vibe listening to the Meat Puppets music: a family sort of vibe.

“The closeness we share is certainly special,” Cris noted. “And now that Curt’s son Elmo is in the band playing guitar, it really strengthens that bond.”

The Meat Puppets, with such a deep history in the punk scene and such an affinity for bands like the Grateful Dead (“The Dead were like the gateway to rock and roll for me,” Cris recalled), are a band with an endless degree of flexibility. They’re an art-rock band in the purest sense. A group, who’s every note, every album cover and every tour, is a thing of individuality and spirit.

“The staple has always been our interest in doing this,” Cris said. “With everything that’s happened, it’s still what drives us to get out there and create. We’re still the same people. You know, your age changes and you hair changes, but the pursuit remains the same.”

Tuesday night can’t get here any faster.

The Monster Inside Vigalondo’s latest is a beast

By Br yan VanC ampe n Colossal, written and directed by Nacho Vigalondo, playing at Cinemapolis.

This is far from the first time this has been said, but as a child of 50’s insect fear films, Toho monster flicks and The Twilight Zone, I feel like the best sci-fi and fantasy stories are just about the best Trojan Horses around. The really good genre pieces operate on several often surprising levels and can tell some pretty dark stuff about human beings smuggled into what might seem on the surface to be just another creature feature.

Case in point: Nacho Vigalondo’s Colossal, which advances the Toho Godzilla myth into interesting and challenging territory in the vein of Cloverfield, Pacific Rim and The Host. That it does, and that’s all I thought I was going to get. But Colossal has a lot more going on than beasties stomping around wreaking collateral damage.

Seoul, Korea, 1992: A little Korean girl in a park turns and sees a humongous behemoth with demonic horns. She screams.

We cut to New York City now and

meet Gloria (Anne Hathaway), an unemployed writer and a hot alcoholic mess.

After sneaking in one too many mornings with too many lies, her boyfriend Tim (Dan Stevens) reads her the riot act, packs her bags and kicks her out of his apartment. Gloria moves back home to her parents’ empty house, buys an air mattress and reconnects with Oscar (Jason Sudeikis). Oscar owns his family’s bar and spends his days drinking with neighborhood buddies Joel (Austin Stowell) and Garth (the always-welcome Tim Blake Nelson). Against whatever better instincts she has, Gloria takes a part time job at Oscar’s bar.

Then one bleary afternoon, Gloria wakes up hung-over, logs onto her laptop and is horrified to see the horned behemoth plodding around Seoul, Korea. The twist is that Hathaway’s alcoholic barmaid gradually realizes that she is the avatar for the behemoth. She brings the boys to a small playground (the creature appears every morning at 8:05), and as they watch on an iPad, she makes physical movements that the creature mimics perfectly.

Hathaway’s odd link to this Asian

leviathan is a pretty sweet metaphor for Hathaway’s addiction and crumbling lifestyle. (It would have been nice if Hathaway had allowed herself to look a little worse for wear, but given that she’s an executive producer, she looks pretty good for a dead-end drunk.) In a way, her critter connection reminded me of the rain of frogs in Paul Thomas Anderson’s sweeping and operatic melodrama Magnolia.

As Anderson said at the time, “There are times in your life when things are…so confused that someone can say to you, ‘It’s raining frogs,’ and that makes sense.”

Back to those layers of meaning I was talking about earlier, the Trojan Horse and the smuggling. It’s clear that Vigalondo is a true blue monster movie

fan, but this Spanish filmmaker – check out his 2007 film Timecrimes – has just as much to say about the banality and endless nature of addiction and fear of recovery. For all of the film’s light moments, as the monstrosities mount, the genial small-town vibe that Sudeikis and his pals project get pretty real and pretty dark.

Sudeikis has been doing fine comedic work in We’re the Millers and Harmontown, but I think it’s safe to say this SNL alum goes to some scary and startling places. Like the best monster movies, the people are the real bad guys. • 40th Anniversary Season Sponsor

A Deadhead’s Insight

Cornell ‘77 stood for more than just a show

F

rom its start, author Peter Conners acknowledges the idea that one single rock concert generating enough material for an entire book seems, on its face, an ambitious task. Possibly, he writes, even extreme.

Then again, The Grateful Dead’s appearance at Cornell’s Barton Hall back in ’77 was no ordinary concert.

What happened May 8 that year — forever immortalized as “Grateful Dead Day” in the City of Ithaca — wasn’t simply one of the greatest shows the Dead ever played.

In fact, whether the show was the best the band had ever played is still a topic of some debate among the most diehard members of the fan base. Some have even called it an overrated performance in the band’s history, a performance largely propped up by the mythology surrounding it.

Understanding of this myth is the focus of Conners’ latest book, Cornell ’77: The Music, The Myth and the Magnificence of the Grateful Dead’s Concert at Barton Hall, published through Cornell University Press.

Through 179 quick-reading pages, Conners explores not only the experience of that Barton Hall show through the eyes of those who attended, but he also explores the stories of the people involved in its happening: a study of the band itself during that point in time and in explaining the greater social implication of the show itself.

Conners takes a deep dive into the social and cultural aspects of the Dead universe — from the taping subculture among its fan base to the band’s style of touring and performing — which leant itself to the immortality of that night’s performance.

Cornell ‘77 is not simply a drawn-out review of a great concert: it is a deep analysis of why, even today, the show has maintained its status well beyond the borders of Ithaca 40 years later.

Conners, a self-professed Deadhead and author of numerous tomes on music and the counterculture, approaches his subject with a reverent honesty. The book is as much a tribute as it is an anthropological survey of Grateful Dead culture and a true assessment of where the band was at that point in its history, taking into account not only the group’s mindset at the time but also where it stood creatively in ’77.

Beginning with a chapter tying the sonic experiments of Ken Kesey’s acid tests to the obsessive technicality of the Grateful Dead’s “taper” fan base, Conners, through

his already extensive background on the social mechanics of the Grateful Dead fandom, builds a level of context for his analysis of the show. By its end, readers understand exactly why that Barton Hall show gained a certain mythology throughout the years. The show might not have been the greatest the band ever played, but among a fandom where taping shows fuelled the flames of obsession, the act of capturing lightning in a bottle with such clarity is what elevated the status of the show to the very top of Deadhead esteem.

But the book is not simply an analysis of the cultural impact of the Barton Hall show. Through more than two-dozen interviews (including the likes of Ithaca Times columnist Stephen P. Burke, who is quoted a considerable amount for his role in the Cornell Concert Commission), Conners reaches into the sense of devotion surrounding the people who made that show happen. These interviews are an indicator of not just who enjoyed the music, but the degree to which they embodied the attitude of the band. Conners does an effective job capturing the mood of the evening and the spirit of both the traveling fans and Cornell’s student body at the time.

Conners brings readers into the booming confines of Barton Hall, his writings on the performance itself keeping pace with the rhythm and fever of the band’s romping set list for the evening. The list is composed of the “Cowboy Bob” sampler of the Bakersfield sound to the latest from Terrapin Station, which came out that same year.

Whilst reading, the audience can almost hear the temper of each individual piece through Conners’ analysis and critique of the songs, something that likely came from the countless times he listened to the show while writing the book. Such an approach lends itself to some beautiful literary passages, from the imagery of apocalyptic bump and grind evoked in Fire On The Mountain, to the “ancient fancy” evoked in the band’s epic rendition of Morning Dew. Conners writes with an uncommon level of passion: a place not only of authority and command of the subject matter but one of slack-jawed admiration, earned only through a deep, analytical understanding of the forces at work behind each song.

Though Conners had his doubts at first, there is much that has been said about the Grateful Dead’s show at Barton Hall that night. In his meticulous account, Conners manages to say it all. •

director Cornelia Laemmli Orth, the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra closes its 40th season on May 11 in Ford Hall, with works by Ravel and Ginastera and the rare opportunity to hear Metropolitan Opera star baritone Nathan Gunn, who will be singing more Ravel, two popular opera arias, and some cowboy songs.

The Finger Lakes Chamber Ensemble, now in its 25th season, offers their annual Mother’s Day concert on May 14 in the Unitarian Church, with guest artists Janet Sung and Susan Waterbury, violins; David Rose, viola; and Heidi Hoffman, cello, in music by Arensky and Tchaikovsky.

One of folk’s enduring masters, David Bromberg’s dizzying career has seen him collaborate with behemoths like Bob Dylan, Jerry Garcia and many more.

Bromberg’s latest record, “The Blues, The Whole Blues and Nothing But The Blues”, was inspired partly by a quote he heard Willie Nelson repeat a quote from Texas fiddler, Johnny Giimble: “There’s only two kinds of music – the Star Spangled Banner and the Blues.”

Anna Coogan is a force. With an epic voice and a brilliant musical sensibility, the Ithacc-based musician can command a stage like few others. Through her driving and spatial jaunts is where her real dimension squares.

Her newest record, “The Lonely Cry of Space and Time”, is an extension of her deep offerings: vast and lush, with corners sharp and stunning. The record’s a two-person effort, featuring Willie B in drums and Moog bass.

pring has stretched its warm wings over us and the city of Ithaca is transformed. Spring brings the beginning of festival season, which is one of the cooler aspects of Ithaca. For a city that’s relatively small, it sure packs a mighty bite in terms of creative substance.

The 8th Annual Spring Writes Festival will descend upon the city this weekend, bringing over 35 literary themed events, including panels, workshops and readings. The musical score blends British church and country music with European Opera and the play is considered one of the duo’s greatest works.
