wo Cornell students who had been under observation for the coronavirus have tested negative and been released, according to statements from Cornell University and the Tompkins County Health Department.

The school announced early last week that one student had been taken into isolation and monitoring after showing signs of a potential coronavirus case. Samples were sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for testing and were subsequently returned negative, which the school also announced.

Yet accompanying that announcement came news that a second student was being evaluated for the sickness, which has ravaged mainland China over the last several weeks. Fortunately, though, on Sunday the school announced that the CDC had returned the second student’s test results as also negative. At this time, there are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in New York State.

“At this time, no members of the Cornell community are undergoing testing for the 2019 Novel Coronavirus,” the school said in a statement.

“There are still no confirmed cases of Novel Coronavirus in New York state and the risk to the community remains low.”

Cornell has emphasized that the Chinese community on campus, which is quite sizable, not be targeted with backlash for the outbreak, and so far it doesn’t seem that there has been any outright bad behavior in that regard. Certainly, online comments have been nasty, but no incidents against Chinese students have been reported publicly so far.

Overnight bus service to NYC coming next week to Ithaca

R

egional bus trip service OurBus will be starting its own trips between New York City and various upstate stops starting next week, the company announced in an email to customers on Wednesday.

The trips, currently proposed for nightly runs, would start in Niagara Falls and end in midtown Manhattan, stopping in Buffalo, Rochester, Binghamton and Ithaca.

The service from Manhattan to Niagara Falls would make stops at the same locations, and include two buses running routes simultaneously, going

either direction.

It will also be the first overnight bus service to New York City that serves Ithaca. OurBus founder Axel Hellman said the service would start on Feb. 12.

Buses would depart from Manhattan at 11 p.m. nightly and arrive in Niagara Falls by 7 a.m. Meanwhile, buses would leave from Niagara Falls at 12:15 a.m. nightly and arrive in Manhattan by 9 a.m. For Ithaca travelers, service from Manhattan would arrive around 3:05 a.m., while service from Niagara Falls and heading toward the city would get to Ithaca at 4:00 a.m.

According to the company, the move was made in reaction to positive feedback on a survey gauging the potential new service recently.

“After gathering your feedback, starting next week, we’re excited to launch a daily overnight / early morning service between popular upstate NY destinations and NYC,” the announcement read.

OurBus has run into hot water with the City of Ithaca before, though it seems the relationship is at a solid point now. For a time, the company wasn’t allowed to utilize the intercity bus stop at Green Street, part of why it now makes its stops outside the Starbucks on Seneca Street. The company filed a federal lawsuit against the City of Ithaca and the case was resolved.

Shawna Black named Chair after stalemate

ounty Clerk Maureen Reynolds named Shawna Black the chair of the Tompkins County Legislature on Friday. She is in her first legislative term, representing District 11, the Town of Ithaca.

The selection was announced in a press release by fellow county legislator Mike Sigler, who had served as interim chair during the first several meetings of the year. He had been set to only serve until a permanent choice was made, but the legislature had been deadlocked on who would lead for weeks, casting several tied votes between Anna Kelles and Mike Lane, both of whom were running for the chair’s seat.

“I would like to thank County Clerk Maureen Reynolds for her confidence in my ability to lead our Legislature,” said Black. “I look forward to serving as Chair. Over the past week situations have changed and I look forward to a resolution at our February 18 meeting.”

Once the legislature remained unable to reach a consensus at last week’s meeting, the duty became Reynolds’ to name a chairperson. According to county bylaws, if a consensus can’t be reached after 30

days after the first meeting of the year, the county clerk is in charge of picking someone who will serve indefinitely until a consensus is reached.

Sigler had agreed to keep board appointments to a minimum while the Kelles-Lane stalemate continued, striving to not “exacerbate any strife.” During his time, though, the legislature had approved a new permanent Office of Human Rights Director, Dr. Kenneth Clarke, and Kelles announced her candidacy for the NY State Assembly today, joining the race for the Democratic nomination to vie to replace longtime Assembly member Barbara Lifton, who announced her retirement last week (this is likely the “changing situation” Black referred to in her statement). In that announcement, Kelles additionally announced she would no longer be seeking the legislature chair seat.

As for what this signals long-term, it likely means Lane will take over as the official chair of the legislature following the legislature’s meeting on Feb. 18, pending a vote. With Kelles abandoning her bid for the chair’s spot, unless someone else decides to also contend, Lane is the lone person who has expressed any interest.

Regardless, Black will serve unimpeded until the point at which a person is chosen by consensus to be chair.

ollowing months of debate and plenty of resident feedback over several public meetings, the City of Ithaca Common Council voted to table amended legislation regarding accessory dwelling units (ADU).

Over 30 speakers came before the council asking them to consider adding or eliminating an owner-occupancy requirement, which was one of the amendments under consideration by the council last week. Though a climax to the debate was anticipated last Wednesday at the monthly meeting of Common Council, several councilors realized that tabling the measure to do further research was their preferred move.

A recurring theme throughout these meetings has been split opinions regarding whether or not to add an owner-occupancy requirement to the proposed legislation, which was designed to encourage density development. Those residents who are opposed to the owner-occupancy requirement feel it could create exclusionary zoning, damaging property values since people couldn’t use the properties as rental spaces. Others said the requirement will

make it difficult to sell one’s home.

However, there were plenty of residents who argued the merits of implementing an owner-occupancy requirement. Ann Sullivan, a resident of East Hill, pointed out how highly expensive rents and predatory landlords are elemental in making Ithaca a target for developers who would purchase homes with accessory dwelling units. The issue has come up in the South Hill neighborhood too, which has spent the last several years trying to ward off more rental properties that are largely, if not exclusively, rented by students. Adding an owner-occupancy requirement would theoretically keep homes reserved for people who want to become homeowners.

Alderperson Cynthia Brock has been skeptical yet thorough in examining how the new ADU legislation would impact Ithaca. During the January meeting of the Planning and Economic Development Committee, there were numerous questions regarding newly proposed language in the legislation. During those discussions, Brock found that by allowing certain types of exterior design would effectively eliminate R1 zoning. Alderperson Stephen

Smith found the discussion becoming less lucid and marred with repetitive questions. In response to Brock’s statements, during that meeting, he said language like that only serves to create fear. Smith went on to note his interpretation of the affordable housing situation in Tompkins County.

“The reality is a single-family can already rent to two unrelated people in their house,” Smith said. “Who cares if we put up a wall and give them two-bedrooms or four bedrooms between them. There are people in our county and our community who are being excluded. [...] And all we’re trying to do is create a city where people can afford to live here. And this isn’t going to ruin a neighborhood. Renters don’t bring down the property values, they don’t disrespect property in any great disproportion to homeowners.”

Other concerns regarding the ADU discussion are about how they could be used for short-term rentals instead of apartments. Some are worried that passing ADU legislation without guidelines for short-term rentals will only complicate matters further when short-term rental legislation, which deals with home-sharing services like AirBnb, becomes a priority for the city. The topic of ADU’s will be brought before the Planning and Economic Development Committee at their next meeting on Feb. 12.

fter several delays, the Harold’s Square development is scheduled to open in its entirety on Aug. 21, though the developers have a goal of opening one month prior in July. The new building touts over 47,000 sq. ft. of subdividable office and retail space along with 78 units of housing as well. Apartments will range from 350 sq. ft. studios affectionately called microunits, to 1,100 sq. ft. 2 bedroom/2 bathroom apartments.

Prices range from $1,300 to $3,000 for apartments.

Until the building opens, though, Vicki Taylor Brous of Flair Strategic Communication is giving tours of the semi-finished building on behalf of David Lubin of L Enterprises. A model two-bedroom unit features stainless steel appliances, a quartz countertop, and pet-friendly apartments.

Other amenities throughout the building are a fitness center in the basement of the building, a pet-washing station, 1 GB fiber optic internet, and private storage units.

The project has had its share of obstacles, frustrating city officials, developers and citizens alike, but finally appears on the verge of completion as it rises above the Commons. Regardless of the many delays the building has faced, Brous is confident that construction will be done on time or possibly before then. Upon completion, this will be the tallest building in Ithaca.

“With no roads surrounding the project, and having followed the Commons rebuild, while being built in such a public space, it has created a perfect storm of

conditions to make any team feel like they are hiking uphill with a load that seems unbearable, but yet the team keeps going,” Brous said. “There are so many complications that come about from building in the downtown core. Your neighbors are in business and we all want them to be successful, but construction is disruptive.”

The building was designed with a setback on the fifth floor to keep it within the height of the Commons. Brous said it would not have been appropriate to put a tower in the historic district of downtown.

The ground floor of the building will feature a subdividable area for retail spaces.

The exterior of the building is noticeable proof of this as it looks like three different buildings in one place. The 14,000 sq. ft. groundfloor space is designed to allow for three to four tenants or one big retail tenant as well. Each floor plate has 12,000 sq. ft. of office space throughout it.

The Sage Block Building, which has been a kind of headquarters for developers on this project will be undergoing historic rehabilitation. As of now, there have been additions to make the building handicap accessible and the addition of a courtyard between it and Harold’s Square. Brous detailed some of the other elements that will be going into this rehabilitation.

They will not be doing a renovation of their other next-door neighbor, the Mate Factor Building, though Brous pointed out they have worked with them. However, they initially faced some trouble with a recent third neighbor, Vecino’s Asteri Ithaca project. Brous said developers from Har-

old’s Square have been working to keep the views Harold’s Square established.

In order to encourage residents to take up a car-free lifestyle, Harold’s Square will be offering TCAT passes to those who live there. Brous said there have been concerns about parking as a whole. Since both the Green and Seneca Street garages will be offline for a certain amount of time, this will be difficult to workaround. However, Brous said she’s is confident this will not be much of a problem since there is only one garage that allows for overnight parking anyway.

“Both the Green and Seneca [Street] Garages don’t allow for overnight parking, you’re supposed to move your car every few hours,” Brous said. “But, the Cayuga Street Garage does allow for long-term parking and being that it’s one block away, we’ll certainly be encouraging our residents to get permits. The permits are actually lower cost than those for Green and Seneca. Really, Green and Seneca should be reserved for short-term parkers who are visiting the downtown businesses. So, encouraging people to leave their cars. It’s easy to access, a block away, and providing the amenities for them to be car-free.”

During construction, the building is heated with two construction heaters, that have made the building, particularly the stairwells, extremely hot. However, as the building’s completion date nears, they will be switching over to a regular heat pump system. Currently, they are on the main electric. The building will be abiding by NYSERDA’s standards for environmental friendliness by having an efficient heating and cooling system, a hot water heater, LED lighting, water-saving fixtures, investment in off-site 60.3-kilowatt solar farm to further offset fossil fuel-generated power usage, and a 35 percent less energy usage than a similar type conventionally built building.

Considering this building has a name similar to the famous public pavilion in Manhattan, Herald’s Square, it can be confusing to say one name without invoking the other. Brous said the building’s name does come from a former business of developer David Lubin of L Enterprises, who is a partner in Harold’s Square with McGuire Development.

“This is a project that defines perseverance, or a determination to build an iconic, revitalizing project under extreme circumstances, because you believe in the downtown and the community,” Brous said. “It may take some effort for the public to understand its benefit, but it is projected and will be realized over time.”

I don’t know why the single red pepper on top was the clincher, but it was. Close second went to Ithaca Ale House. ▶ Best Beer - The Falcon Punch IPA from Lucky Hare Brewing Company was solid.

But let’s get one thing straight: If we’re going to allow open containers on the Commons for one day, let’s do it right.

None of this five drops of beer nonsense.

Linda Santos: Bringing a Postcard to Life

inda’s father and mother met in Beloit, Wisconsin, and she is the youngest of four children. When her father completed law school, this former United Press International “stringer,” took a job in Guam and began his practice of law. Linda’s mother, of Japanese ancestry, has family in Hawaii, so the six-member family made the 8-hour flight from Guam to Hawaii for visits and extended stays. Linda attended 7 schools in Michigan, Guam, completing high school in Hawaii.

“Growing up we savored the different countries and cultures we visited or dwelled in. Wherever we lived our parents valued health habits. I remember our mother exercising to Jane Fonda videos when we were kids, and I usually joined in. Mom was also my first yoga student when I was about 11—she would let me lead her in sunrise yoga in our living room at 5:30 a.m. We had lots of beach time as a family. We biked and swam, and sailed small boats in Apra Harbor, at the Mariana Yacht Club, a very unpretentious shack on the shores within the harbor

After Linda obtained a BFA degree in dance at the University of Hawaii, she returned to Guam. To earn an income while pursuing dance and personal training, Linda studied and became licensed in real estate. “As much as I loved my family in Guam and in Hawaii, there were few professional dance opportunities at the time I graduated. I felt it was time for a big change, so after much soul-searching, I moved to NYC, not sure what to expect, and not knowing anyone there.”

Santos worked for 10 years at Equinox at NYC, a fitness club that quickly grew quite popular in the city. During that decade, she said, she savored “dance, music, art, museuming in Manhattan and the boroughs,” right up until 9/11 occurred and she became nervous about big city life. ” “I came for a fitness conference in continued on page 7

With no income, though...​ HARRY: Four bedrooms?​ DUNPHY: Isn’t it just the three of you?​ HARRY: Are there outbuildings for the servants? And where’s the moat?​ DUNPHY: Er...I...I think there’s a small shed...​ MEGHAN: Harry, we’ve talked about this. We don’t have moats in America.​ HARRY: No moat? I say, whatever will the Master of Moats do, then? And is our Groom of the Stool supposed to live in a shed? And the Lords-in-Waiting?

hank you for printing Thomas H. Mann’s “A tragic situation needs courage to help”. His honesty was inspirational and his insight was spot on. For far too long Cornell has behaved as if it were above the law, with a ‘what happens in Cornell stays in Cornell’ attitude bolstered by its’ own Police force.

This insular, entitled attitude is, sadly, passed down to many of its’ students who feel encouraged to act as cocooned adults to whom ‘normal’ behavior and laws do not apply, when, in reality, they are mostly just deluded children. The bottom line is that children are being killed, and those responsible are hiding behind ivy-covered walls. It is time for a change. My thoughts and prayers are with the Tsialas family.

The Human Rights Division used to be an organization based on legal issues.

While Dr. Clark seems to have good credentials as a mediator/counselor, is he an attorney? If not, are there other staff members legally trained who can determine when a person who brings a complaint has grounds to bring a legal action, such as discrimination due to race, sexual preference, etc. ? These questions used to be issued based on the laws against discrimination. The DHR used to be an organization with clout. Without the teeth to bring legal actions, I can’t see how it can truly serve complainants who come to it with discrimination cases. At this time, I’m asking for clarification of the purpose of the organization. Could someone do a follow-up article to provide information on the role the organization plays today?

feel uncertain or anxious during a public health crisis, and we need to remember to care for one another and not make assumptions about others’ perceived symptoms or any characteristics of identity,” VP of Student Life Ryan Lombardi said.

“This is a time for the Cornell community to support one another. Your compassion and empathy for each other makes a difference.”

That statement came after Cornell had banned school-related travel to mainland China as a result of the outbreak, which has infected tens of thousands and killed over 800 in the country. There have only been about a dozen confirmed cases in

the United States, and the county health department announced that it would be notified of all people returning to Tompkins County after a stay in mainland China. Those people would be placed under a mandatory isolation for evaluation, regardless of whether or not they were presenting coronavirus symptoms.

A Big Step A week of approvals brings conference center discussion into the home stretch

Will it be a money pit? How will its financial structure work? Will anyone want to come to remote Ithaca for a conference?

All are questions that took a significant step to being answered last week, when

meetings on three consecutive days at the Tompkins County and City of Ithaca levels ended with preliminary agreements and a month’s worth of negotiations to go.

Thursday’s Ithaca Urban Renewal Agency meeting was one of the first times members of the public had an openly, visibly negative reaction to the conference center. For the most part, those speaking during public comment period at meet-

ings have been industry participants, like hotel officials or tourism leaders, who have a vested interest in the conference center proposal coming to fruition. It’s been openly acknowledged that a conference center would be a significant boon to the local hotel market, and projections are that it would have millions of dollars of impact on downtown businesses.

But, perhaps sensing the seeming im-

minence of the conference center’s approval especially in light of the $5 million grant that was received for the project, people did show up to last week’s series of meetings with concerns. Some were worried about the impact on the local parking stock in the short-term, others about another extended time of downtown construction and what it would mean for city traffic. The IURA had the option of rejecting the proposal on Thursday outright.

There were two separate versions of the resolution, one that included an approval and one that made it clear the financial plan was not viable enough to continue, the latter of which would have ended the conference center push in its tracks and continued with the redevelopment project sans center.

The current financial plan would supply $1.9 million yearly, either through the maximum allowed hotel room occupancy tax (five percent for the City of Ithaca and an additional five percent for Tompkins County, which is already in place), or the establishment of a Tourism Improvement District, which would operate mainly in the same way. Both have significant hurdles to take effect, though: a new hotel room occupancy tax would have to be approved by New York State, while a tourism improvement district would have to surpass the tax cap once.

Though the following is subject to negotiation, the jumping-off point is four main tenets of funding: There’s an operative reserve fund that will be set at $500,000 when the center opens, which would be tapped when needed and re-

plenished by room taxes. The Downtown Ithaca Alliance will be providing $25K annually in case the operating reserve fund is short. Tompkins County would provide about $600,000 in backup money from the room tax revenues, although that’s a point that has to be hammered out during negotiations, and finally the city’s reserve fund which would be first in line in case of a financial need. Any lease agreement between the City of Ithaca and Vecino is expected to provide a lease for 30 years.

Without objection, the IURA board deemed this a suitable enough starting point for project financing. With the unanimous vote, though, the city and country will now enter into negotiations with a deadline of March 4 to formulate an agreement that will “define the roles and responsibilities for the shared financial guarantee is authorized to be executed by each party.”A lease agreement must also be agreed upon between the City of Ithaca and Vecino before March 4. The resolution states that both must be voted into effect

by March 16.

There’s certainly risk involved, as there would be for any large project. But with a conference center, there’s more. It’s almost universally accepted that virtually any conference center is going to run at a significant financial loss; the facility itself is not an economic boondoggle, and Ithaca’s proposed center is projected to operate at a loss of $225,000 annually. Understandably, that’s been a sticking point for politicians involved in the approval process who see the number as a potentially scary yearly price tag for an unproven commodity.

“The conference center is not going to generate a profit itself, it’s not going to break even as modeled,” IURA Executive Director Nels Bohn said. “It very well could break even, but that’s not what the model is projecting. The reason for that is is the benefits of the project aren’t captured within the conference center budget itself.

The conference center is only a space, the real benefit to the community is spread around to the hotels and the restaurants and the other businesses in the area. It’s an investment in the community.”

City officials have, it seems, warmed to the project for the most part, be they elected or staff members. County officials, on the other hand, still appear quite apprehensive. Their meeting was the first of the week that dealt with the conference center and certainly had the most vocal opposition among voting officials. Though it ended with a 9-4 vote in favor of opening negotiations with the city about the financial backing parameters, the meeting was not without its tense moments.

“Conference centers do not pay for themselves,” Tompkins County Legislator Dan Klein said. “That assumption is baked right into this proposal. The only way to make the proposal work is to have public money used as a financial backstop. I do not support that concept, so I will be voting no.”

Klein also pointed out that the current hotel tax funds go towards financially supporting arts and cultural programming, and that he thinks if the conference center was undergoing a financial emergency, money would have to come from arts and

cultural programming to help support it.

“That is the most likely place where the bail-out funds would come from,” Klein said.

Other legislators, like Henry Granison, were similarly hesitant, even though the vote being held was only to enter into negotiations with the city about a potential financial backing plan.

“If a business wants to start a conference center, that’s great. If the city wants to support that, great,” fellow legislator Amanda Champion said. “I don’t really feel like it’s something that the county has to be involved with.”

Champion, who represents the Town of Ithaca, acknowledged that some parts of her district might be beneficially impacted by increased tourism, but expressed skepticism that it would extend to more rural parts of the county, which would mitigate the postiive influence on those municipalities.

“I don’t necessarily agree that people who come to a conference in downtown Ithaca are going to be going to Groton, [or Enfield, or Newfield],” Champion said.

Negotiations will likely be kept under wraps for the next several weeks until an agreement is reached and announced publicly.

“There’s definitely concern on legislators’ part about the risk,” County Adminsitrator Jason Molino told the IURA meeting on Thursday. “Our perspective going into this is the risk is on everyone’s part, so how do we own that collectively and share that responsibility to try to achieve the same outcome.”

Players from Cornell’s legendary runs return

man can be forgiven for speaking from his head rather than from his heart…

I was at Newman Arena on Saturday, watching the Cornell men’s basketball team warming up, getting ready to take on the Ivy League frontrunner, the Princeton Tigers, who came in with a 4-0 league record. I was chatting it up with a longtime friend (who also happens to be an employee of Cornell Athletics), and I said “What is the crystal ball saying today?”

He shook his head and said, “Well, I hope given the special guests we have here, we can at least be competitive, but I gotta tell ya, I really don’t like these matchups.”

The “special guests” my friend referenced were about two dozen alumni who had brought Ivy League titles to Cornell.

Several members of the Class of 1988 were there, being recognized for winning the first title in Big Red history, as were quite a few players from the Class of 2010. That group, of course, won an Ivy-record 29 games in 2010, won its third straight Ivy title, then became the Darlings of the Big

blow off some dust and flash some old magic, and when Wolfgang Florin put up an airball from the foul line, he seemed disappointed that Josh Wexler just caught it and stood there.

“Man,” Florin said, “that was a pass. You were supposed to catch it and put it in.”

Moving over to the younger alums, I asked Geoff Reeves if he could still dunk.

“Yes I can,” Geoff said, and quickly added, “but I have four broken ribs.” Okay, Geoff… Then, his wife offered to show xray pics, so Reeves was off the hook.

Ten years ago, Louis Dale was famously quoted as saying, “I’m enjoying every minute, because after this it’s just babies and memories.” I asked Sweet Lou if he had any babies. “No,” he laughed, “just memories.” Ryan “Hittman” Wittman, Jon Jaques and Alex Tyler, however, are two-for-two.

They have memories and babies.

Jeff Foote played several seasons of pro ball after college, he’s still 7-feet tall and in great shape, so asking him if he can still dunk would be a dumb question.

Jaques has been a Big Red assistant for several years, and I asked him if Boeheim’s vastly improving inside game was surprising anyone. “No,” Jaques said. “His great footwork and his touch are enhancing his game.”

I complimented Boeheim on his stellar inside play, and he said, “Thanks, I’ve been working on it.” Of the alums in attendance, he said, “It was great to have them here.

We have so much respect for them, and we’re trying to honor them and follow their legacy.”

Dance by knocking off Temple, and then putting a convincing pounding on the mighty Badgers of Wisconsin. Those two wins made the Big Red the first Ivy League team to reach the Sweet 16 since 1979.

The game got underway with the hosts going flat out while the visitors took some time to wake up. I might need to brush up on my feline anatomy, as I am unsure whether tigers have heels, but if they do, these Tigers were on them. The first minute and a half saw no scoring, but when Cornell’s Riley Voss blocked a shot and followed up with a 3-ball on the other end, the crowd started to buzz. Terrance “From Way Outside” McBride nailed a three, and the energy level went up another notch.

Over the first 20 minutes, Cornell would play very aggressive D and enter the half up 35-22. Everyone knew that Princeton would mount a comeback, and they did, a few of them in fact, but Cornell answered every time. Josh Warren would come up with a big double-double, scoring 18 points and pulling down 10 boards.

chipped in 14 points and hustled all day on both ends. Riley Voss and Dean Noll were tough off the bench, but once again, the Big Red’s leading scorer, junior Jimmy Boeheim, led the way with 24 points and 9 rebounds. Well known for his prowess from the perimeter, Boeheim has clearly upped his inside game, and did just as much damage from close range.

As stated, the first-place Tigers made a few runs, but then Greg Dolan led a fast break off a steal, dropping a sweet behindthe-back bounce pass to Boeheim, who then slammed it home. The lead went back to a dozen, and the Tigers were tamed by a final score of 73-62.

Reconnecting with the returning alums was a lot of fun, as I was working at Cornell Athletics when the Class of ’88 was assembling their historic season, and I don’t recall missing a single home game during that historic three-season run from ’08-’10.

I approached the elder statesmen from the Class of ‘88 first, and asked Greg Gilda if he could still dunk. Channeling his inner Dirty Harry, Greg smiled and replied, “A man’s got to know his limitations.” How about you, Dean Kartsonis? Can you still dunk? Kartsonis said, “Well, given I could barely dunk 35 years ago…” Point taken…

The legendary long-range sniper John Bajusz was there, and when asked about his memories from the days of yore, he offered, “What I remember most is the Big Red Bear making the half-court shot…”

A Layered Approach Area cake-makers tell their wackiest wedding orders

my Dawson has received peculiar requests of her cake decorating talents before, but no custom design has ever equated to the strangeness of the request for a rice crispy and chocolate fondant walrus sculpture that perched atop a couple’s wedding cake in 2013.

The Trumansburg-based cake artist and owner of the cake shop Emoticakes wasn’t sure how to classify the walrus wedding cake on her website’s photo gallery because the request was so bizarre. But despite its oddity, she developed an appreciation for its charming two-tusk grin and what became her most unique project to date.

“I fell in love with it by the end,” Dawson said, laughing. “It was a smaller wedding and they just wanted a walrus cake. I don’t even know if I labeled it as a wedding cake on my website because it was so unusual.”

For some of her most niche custom work, Virgadamo created a Nightmare Before Christmas themed wedding cake, complete with a sculpted skeleton king.

Emoticakes’ Dawson was presented with her own nerve-racking task when she designed the walrus cake. She had to devise a way to make the cake out of ingredients that were structurally sound, yet still delicious.

Other than design, couples are also becoming more adventurous in cake flavors. Gaines once created a custom bourbon flavored cake with cinnamon vanilla cream icing that was adorned with figs and a caramel sauce drip pattern.

“You can’t help but get emotionally invested in these clients. You meet them and create such a bond,” Virgadamo said. “There’s nothing cooler than being picked to be a part of someone’s special day.”

“Thinking outside the box is not only fun, it allows me to continue to grow with all the trends and constantly learn new techniques,” Gaines said.

Lansing-based cake artist and owner of Sugar & Slice Trisha Virgadamo has experimented with unique wedding cake flavors for past orders as well. Last year, she made a groom’s cake that incorporated his love for funfetti cake and mint chocolate chip ice cream. In the same year, she designed a spiced cake with cappuccino filling and chocolate ganache.

The design aspect of his work is done through a computer that uploads the files to a laser, which initiates corresponding motions.

“I design it all on the computer,” Griswold said. “I use Adobe Illustrator. [...] A stroke is where it will cut and fill is where it will engrave. It’s designed on the computer because it’s going to do the exact same thing. I’ve probably

made thousands of the puzzles from that thing.”

Griswold has designed unconventional objects, including a Newfoundland cutting board out of cherrywood. This is rare, he explained, as it was half an inch thick and the laser only cuts up to a quarter inch. After doing multiple passes over the wood with the laser, Griswold was able to see the design come out perfectly. Griswold’s learned a lot during the past year and been able to refine some of his techniques, both as a worker and manager, though he recognizes there’s still more

Griswold got his start with puzzles after a friend of his introduced him to the laser at Ithaca Generator, and his involvement with wedding puzzles stems from a similar starting point.

“The laser drew my attention and I got to play around with it. I designed stuff and then duplicated it over and over,” Griswold said. “How I got into mostly wedding stuff is because a friend asked if I could make her something then her friend saw it and asked if I could make her one. Someone was just like you should throw it on Etsy and it took off.”

One of his favorite puzzles to create was for a couple who met on the coldest continent in the world.

“It was a surprise I got approached about making an Antarctica shape puzzle, so I enjoyed making that,” Griswold said. “A couple literally met in Antarctica and wanted an Antarctica shaped puzzle. I would have never guessed I would be making one in that shape.”

Special Classical Music for the Coming Months

lways blessed with exceptional musical treats, we are particularly fortunate to hear much music now by the great Ludwig van Beethoven, as 2020 marks his 250 th birth anniversary. Two highlights of the season, although far from Beethoven, include the visit of award-winning composer and A. D. White Professor-at-Large Wynton Marsalis to a Bailey Hall concert on March 20, which includes his piece “Big Train,” to be played by the Jazz Ensemble directed by Paul Merrill. On March 1 in Ford Hall, the Hockett Chamber Music Series at Ithaca College (IC) presents The King’s Singers—six former choral scholars from King’s College, Cambridge, England. Other outstanding events are listed below. Please check dates and venues as schedules can and do change.

ORCHESTRAL AND ENSEMBLE PRESENTATIONS

The IC Symphony Orchestra, conducted

by Octavio Mas-Arocas, plays music by American composers Gabriela Lena Frank and Fredrick Kaufman, plus the Hungarian Zoltán Kodály, on Feb. 28 in Ford Hall. Their concerto concert on March 29, same conductor and venue, features student winners, pianists Alexei Aceto and Harris Andersen playing Chopin and Rachmaninov, plus Brian Breen performing Golovko’s Concerto for Marimba.

On Feb. 29 in Bailey Hall, the Cornell Symphony Orchestra, led by Katherine Kilburn, plays works by Frank and Sibelius, and accompanies the winner of the annual concerto competition. Their second concert is on April 19.

The Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Cornelia Laemmli Orth, presents “Pivotal Pieces” on March 7—music by Mendelssohn and Beethoven, plus Strauss’s Horn Concerto with CCO’s principal horn Scott Leger as soloist. On March 27, “Orchestral Finale,” led by Laemmli Orth, features music by Piazzola and Arriaga, plus Rodrigo’s guitar concerto with soloist Jordan Dodson, and closes with Schubert’s Symphony No. 5.

Both concerts are in Ford Hall. The Cornell Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Katherine Kilburn, includes Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with faculty violinist Ariana Kim as soloist, in Barnes Hall on March 8. The ensemble’s final concert is on April 26. Ensemble X performs Stravinsky’s Octet for Wind Instruments, plus a premiere by Miles Jefferson Friday, with soloist Richard Valitutto, Sage Fellow in Cornell ’s DMA program, in Barnes Hall on March 22.

CHAMBER MUSIC

Two Cornell concerts to celebrate Beethoven take place in Barnes Hall, with pianists Malcolm Bilson, Xak Bjerken and Miri Yampolsky performing the final three sonatas on Feb. 14 and with fortepianist Mike Lee playing the Diabelli Variations on the 15.

The CCO Chamber Music Series presents Beethoven and Casella on Feb. 16, Dvorák and Harbison on April 19 (both at the Unitarian Church), and on May 3 “Center Stage Brass” in the First Baptist Church features music

from Rossini to Ewald, some jazz, and “Paris Skies” for cello and double bass by IC professor Nicholas Walker. The Cornell Concert Series in Bailey Hall on Feb. 27 offers the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, featuring Mozart’s Quintet K. 452 and later pieces for winds and piano.

The IC Beethoven project, with piano professor Charis Dimaris, his current students, and recent select alumni performing all 32 sonatas in the Hockett Family Recital Hall, continues with Concert VI on March 2—Opus 7, 13 (Pathétique), 27/1, 110; Concert VII on March 23—Opus 10/1–3, 79, 101; Concert VIII on April 13—Opus 78, 81a (Les Adieux), 111. The Finger Lakes Chamber Ensemble with guests—violinist Susan Waterbury and tenor Steven Nanni—presents Janácek, Vaughan Williams, and Franck on March 8; and Beethoven and Brahms with guest violin Fritz Gearhart on May 10, both in the Unitarian Church. The Summer Chamber Concert on June 7 at the Lodi Historical Society offers guest clarinet Richard MacDowell in music of Beethoven, Weiner, and Dvorák.

Widely acclaimed since its NYC debut in 2011, the Horszowski Trio performs “Celebrated Women” in Barnes Hall on March 14, which includes a set of bird-themed pieces from three living women composers and Clara Schumann’s piano trio. That evening in the Unitarian Church, NYS Baroque presents “The Panther and the Rose,” Italian medieval music with countertenor, tenor and three instrumentalists. The ensemble’s final concert on May 16 in the First Presbyterian Church features the Diderot Quartet and baritone soloist, with continued on page 18

Eric Plutz from Princeton plays from the symphonies by Louis Vierne, in celebration of the composer’s 150th birth anniversary, on the French romantic organ at St. Luke Lutheran Church on March 22.

Israeli fortepianist Assaf Sommer plays a program of Bach in Barnes Hall on April 11, including selections from Book I of the Well-Tempered Clavier. Music’s Recreation micro-philharmonic with narrator Steven Stull performs an arrangement of “Tubby the Tuba” plus Peter Schickele’s setting of “The Emperor’s New Clothes” on April 19 at CSMA. Black, Examined

Pair of artists bring vivid work to CSMA

CSMA is hosting “Dwelling in

C

urrently (and through March 27), the Community School of Music and Arts is hosting “Dwelling in my Soul/Black, the Color,” a two-person show featuring local artists Charlotte Ghiorse and Colleen Shelton.

Ghiorse works in painting and drawing (often in-between the two) as well as video and music. She has shown for three decades in galleries and “alternative spaces” in both Ithaca and New York City. Her india ink drawings here are vibrant and assured; the best of them have a life-force that permeates the viewer’s brain. Shelton, in contrast, is a less experienced artist. (I am told that this is her first major show.)

Echoing African masks while adapting her own visage, her relief prints and acrylic canvases have a seemingly self-taught, “outsider” quality.

Ghiorse is showing several middlesized works on paper, most from 2019.

Combining blotted fills and gestural strokes of black india ink and white gesso with doodle-like marks in white chalk or pencil, they combine homely, realistic detail with exuberant fantasy.

Featuring dark tonalities enlivened by playful white marks, “Doesn’t Matter i am already Dead” is filled by two oblique brick apartment walls oddly linked by a centrally suspended clothesline. The drooping line holds a parade of suspended tights or stockings—their white, mid-gray, and bubblegum pink popping out amidst the shadowy urban gloom.

“Black Crow, Black Magic, Black UnderWater Roses…where is this all going?” (from 2020) is an enchanted, hallucinatory garden-scape with the white of the paper bleeding through to create an almost back-lit effect. The regal bird appears, perched right-of-center. Behind it: a profusion of blossoms, thorns, leaves, and bubbles. Like certain paintings by Paul Klee, multiple edges—here top and bottom—serve as ground planes, sporting thickets of meandering grass.

Done on a ten by nine-foot cotton sheet and filling the wall by the front staircase, “TABBOO’s Living Room” (2010) depicts an ornate antique interior with a spiral

staircase, elaborate chandelier, fireplace, tall arched windows, and armchair. Thick with gesso, the piece has more of a painted quality. Done as a theatre backdrop, and perhaps effective in that context, the piece appears needlessly crude from close up.

Shelton’s strongest efforts here are her smaller works on paper, combining blocky black linocut with beige and thin-orange pastel fills. Hung in a two by four grid on one wall of the gallery, these 2018 pieces are not bettered by the later canvases which expand upon—or copy—their motifs. As with all her pieces here, she effects a tension between the stiff, unnatural mien and rigid symmetry of her masks and signs of life behind.

Her acrylic paintings, from the past year or so, are rather basic in their color and brushwork but not without a raw charm. Colors alternate between acidic brightness and an earthier, occasionally genuinely subtle approach. A series of brand new monochromes play it safer and are more consistent: pale yellow-orange underpainting gives the otherwise flat gray backgrounds a compelling warmth.

Extending the approach of her prints, her painted faces deviate a bit less quietly from their symmetry—as if breaking from their ancient roles.

Black-and-white and silhouette are prominent in two other recently-opened local shows. Up at Cornell’s Johnson Museum, “Tong Yang-Tze: Immortal at the River” (through June 7) features an adaption of a classical Chinese poem by the Taiwanese modernist calligrapher and current university fellow. Full of writhing, flickering energy, her gestural ink lines activate the “empty” paper-white of the room wrapping scroll. At Corners Gallery in Cayuga Heights, the “2020 Black and White Biennial” (March 28) is guest curated Ann Welles of Corning, NY’s Exhibit A and features artists familiar from that gallery working monochromatically.

Further afield, the Sam and Adele Golden Gallery in New Berlin, NY is showing (through March 13) “Susan Roth: Black is a Color,” a small but weighty retrospective of black-infused paintings by the Canastota, NY painter. Working broadly in the tradition of abstract expressionism, her signature approach combines shaped supports, canvas-on-canvas collage, and an experimental approach to acrylics. The gallery, on the site of the Golden Artist Colors paint factory (sign up for a tour), is about an hour and fortyfive minutes’ drive east of Ithaca and well worth it.

’ve been talking to Vermont-based filmmaker Jay Craven about his work since 1993, when I reviewed his first feature, “Where the Rivers Flow North.” All of Craven’s films have been set sometime in the past and all have been scored by composers Judy Hyman and Jeff Claus. Craven’s latest film, a science fiction piece called “Wetware,” is a true departure for all involved.

“Wetware” (2018) stars Jerry O’Connell (“Stand By Me”) in a story set in “the nottoo-distant future” where desperate people apply for genetic modifications to take on jobs that nobody wants to do. Shot in Vermont and Nantucket, “Wetware” proves what can be done with a low budget and cool ideas.

Craven, Judy Hyman and Jeff Claus will be at Cinemapolis on Feb. 13 for a special screening and Q&A for “Wetware.”

Also in attendance will be many others from the film, including Mary Lorson and Billy Cote, who contributed songs to the soundtrack. The Ithaca Times spoke to Craven, Hyman and Claus about the upcoming event and their work on the movie.

IT: Most of the world in “Wetware” is relatable, but when you get into the upper class—the offices, the labs—that’s where it feels more stylized and futuristic.

Jay Craven: Part of the thinking is, if we think about what the world is gonna look like in 10 or 15 years, it’s basically gonna look mostly the way it looks now. [laughs] ‘Cause we’re not gonna rebuild every building, especially with America becoming more and more low-budget every day of the week. William Gibson made a comment. He said, “The future is already here.

It’s just unevenly distributed.”

IT: It’s in the tradition of a lot of lowbudget science fiction where it’s more about the ideas and the characters than the eye candy, but the eye candy that is there is effective.

Jeff Claus: You really get what he did, because it is a low budget, and Jay loves characters.

JC: We had a fabulous production designer, Alina Smirnova, who was straight out of NYU graduate school and actually went to Cornell for undergraduate school.

She was from a Russian-Turkish immigrant family, and lived in Russia until she was nine years old. Very talented, I think.

Her budget was around $23,000 to create the world [of the film] and that’s not a lot of money.

IT: What was the budget?

JC: Basically, it was $750,000. The schedule was 30 days.

IT: How do you get actors like Jerry

O’Connell for that kind of money?

JC: Jerry worked for scale, which was nice of him. He liked the script, he liked the project. I create a film-intensive semester where we bring in essentially 25 professionals and 35 students from a dozen colleges to create this collaboration, which is clearly being led by the professionals, but the students are being asked to step up and play substantial roles in the production. It means you got a big crew, and you gotta house them and feed them, so a lot of the budget’s there.

IT: When the characters don helmets and go into the gaming area, that was all animation?

JC: Yeah. The animator was Evan Mann, a young guy straight out of RISD. I liked it a lot. It’s totally different. The alternate scenario, what was written in the novel, was a video game gone haywire type of thing, which would have been extremely expensive to produce, and would have been somewhat familiar in terms of its look, I think. I just don’t think we could have done it well, so finding this young, hungry guy that had another idea of the future was sort of a find for us.

IT: “Wetware” features the most “out there” score that Jeff and Judy have done.

It’s more synthetic and textural than melodic.

Judy Hyman: Jay has always done movies that were set in the past. “Wetware” is the only movie that we’ve been involved in that’s set in the near future, so it required a different kind of treatment.

Jeff Claus: It was clearly a departure for him. In fact, it was an interesting process for him because he was on unfamiliar turf.

There were moments in other films where we got to do this kind of thing, but in a somewhat rooted way. So we were ready to go when he said, “I’m going to do a sci-fi film.”

JH: We were so excited to do something that doesn’t have to be “period piece in the past.” We had always wanted to do something more contemporary.

IT: Do you talk about the score before you start filming?

JC: Yeah, we start talking immediately.

They read the script when it’s done, they look at it, they start talking, and in some cases, they even create some music before we start shooting. It gives me something to have in my mind to be working with.

Jeff Claus: We read the book and then the script, and you’re always intrigued by what gets left out. Then there’s a focus that comes into shape in the screenplay that’s a central part of the director’s vision. He saw resonance in this book in the present and really wanted to bring some of those things to light.

But playwright Metzler is interested in parenthood for both genders, and partway through, Mitchell drops into the yard—a new father who runs an investment firm, anxious that his haute fashion jewelry designer wife Adrienne seems not to dote on their newborn. Soon a reluctant Adrienne huffs her way through a coffee clutch.

To a certain generation, Jessie and Lena, midwestern politeness and urban tell it like it is, has the flavor of one of the great sit-com duos, Mary Richards and Rhoda Morgenstern. I mean this as praise and also as the limitation of the script.

The inclusion of super-rich Mitchell and Adrienne tries to hit yet another level of class, put a gender twist on nurturing and introduce two slightly eccentric characters.

The Lina-Jessie friendship is short-circuited as the play grows plot heavy.

Director M. Bevin O’Gara’s production is warm, generous, funny, felt and at crucial moments very vulnerable. Mikaela Izquierdo finds a questing note that anchors her Jessie, a woman facing new choices in a life that seemed secure and set. Izquierdo has a receptivity in her stage

work that draws one in. Melissa Miller is a hoot in the showier role of Lina, leaning into the sharp language but also coming to abrupt shifts that reveal the pain and fear of just making things work out.

Erica Steinhagen is deliciously cool in her first scene, carrying herself an elegant froideur, absolutely alien to the idea of a mommies group. She doesn’t quite reach the rage of her second entrance, a bravura monologue that reveals a very different woman.

Brian Sgambati plays the bumbling Mitchell with a halting, goofy warmth that negotiates the odd turns of this character with grace.

Great design work as usual from scenic designer Daniel Zimmerman, lighting designer Tyler M. Perry, costumer Sarafina Bush and sound designer Lesley Lisa Greene.

Kitchen Theatre Company, Cry It Out by Molly Smith Metzler; through February 22

hile mothers have appeared on the stage at least since the Greeks, just-become-mothers are an absolute rarity. With her play “Cry It Out,” Molly Smith Metzler remedies this situation with abundant laughter and some tears.

Juggling time nursing and caring for their infants with the few precious moments away, new mothers Jessie and Lina meet in the backyard between their duplexes on the north shore of Long Island (Port Washington.) All that’s available to sit on their first time out is a brand-new play set, yet to be put to use. Each carries a video baby monitor, and the space they alight upon, like two refugees from a storm, is the square footage from which both monitors can pick up the signal of their (hopefully) napping child.

Jessie is from Chicago, originally, married into a moderately wealthy Long Island clan, on leave from her law firm, where she is in line for a partnership. Lina is LI bred, but South Shore, on maternity leave from a job at the local hospital, sharing space with the boyfriend and his mother.

Vendors will be spread out throughout the Argos Inn, Foundry, and Argos Warehouse spaces. Participating vendors include wedding planners and coordinators, photographers, caterers, musicians, DJs, venues, bakers, videographers, floral designers, jewelers, lodging, stylists, and group activities for your wedding weekend or bachelor/ette party! Caterers and bakers will be offering samples, and drinks will be available for purchase at the Argos Warehouse and the Argos Inn. Many of the participating ven-

Though the primary focus of the showcase is on weddings, guests are still welcome even if they’re not in the middle of planning a wedding.
