Recently the stacker has become a main need for the line as it has proven its profitability and reliability. The Stacker counts the bread pieces, stacks them and prepares the stacks for bagging saving the baker’s time and money. The machine can be a single row or multiple rows and used for stacking all types of pita and flatbread.

Then, Farhat Bakery Equipment continuous sheeting lines are specially customized production lines where different sizes and shapes of breads can be made: Samoun Iraqi bread, Baladi Egyptian bread, pocket pitta bread, mini pitta bread, pitta chips, tortilla, Naan bread, Lavash bread, Sambosa rolls, and tandoori bread, by simply changing the rotary cutters. Long shelf-life Croissant production

C

roissants continue to gain popularity worldwide. Every region of the world has its own croissant products and therefore unique characteristics. In some parts of the World, the Middle East and Asian region in particular, demand long shelf life products. This is the reason why the long shelf life croissants were developed. Croissant production lines were among the very first Rademaker bakery production lines produced and we are proud to be the global leader in Croissant production lines. With our three decades of experience, Rademaker is able to produce long shelf life croissant types that meet our client’s demands.

When it comes down to long shelf life croissant production lines, the first important question that arises is how long the desired shelf life should be.

Shelf life can range from 7 days to 6 months. This shelf life will determine the recipe but also the procedure of dough development. The way the croissant is cooled and packed too, is of great influence to the shelf life of the product.

According to the Rademaker long shelf life technology, four drives determine the quality and the shelf life of the croissant.

1. Recipe The recipe for long shelf life croissants is unique. Long lasting softness is created by making use of mother dough and rich recipe with margarine, sugar, eggs, glucose syrup and a special blend of enzymes.

The enzymes blend can be used in combination with a bread improver to contribute tolerance and volume.

The combination of these ingredients, in its specific mixture, will reduce the amount of free water inside of the dough (aW).

In hot, humid countries, or in case of a desired long shelf life, calciumpropionate (cp) as preservative is used to a maximum of 0,3% flour weight. The odor of cp is normally regarded as unpleasant, while as natural preservatives (developed during fermentation and by using mother dough) it is regarded as pleasant but less effective.

Another crucial aspect for the keepability of these products is the filling.

Important is to use fillings that are in balance with the baked croissant crumb; if the filling is too hygroscopic it will attract all water from the crumb. If the filling will release water, the result will be soaked, patchy crumb with dried filling.

Last aspect, the choice for margarine (or shortening, fat, etc.) or butter is important as well. Butter is much more vulnerable for rancidity than vegetable fats.

2. Process/Procedure Long shelf life croissants are produced with very long fermentation times. This differs from the process for ‘normal’ croissants. The long fermentation times arise because mother dough is used (also called levains, brews, preferments, sauerteig, etc.) in combination with the usage of a very low free water amount and the very high amount of fat and sugar is used in the dough. A maximum of flavor development and sometimes usages of preservatives, like calcium propionate, also contribute to this long fermentation times.

However, the mother doughs procedure contribute to this the most.

The mother dough procedure starts with a small amount of culture or

strain. This culture is created spontaneous by air fermentation or by purchased strain. Accordingly, this strain is up scaled by flour, water and temperature. This scaling can be done in several fermentation steps. Whether the choice is made for one, two or three fermentation steps is depending on recipe costs, desired quality, pH, production equipment and dough handling.

Important is the development of the strain called ‘Saccharomyces Exiguous’. This strain will decrease the acidity of the dough and creates a natural preservative.

To upscale the strain and to keep the characteristics of the strain vivid, there are two basic ways: 1. One-time purchase.

A certain amount of strain/culture can be used as a starter for the next day. Whether the mother dough’s strain/culture remains stable and daily performs the same, depends on the bakery conditions.

2. Repeatedly purchase.

Every day a fresh batch is started up for croissants production. This method may be a bit more expensive but the predictability of the production process, especially the final proofing time, is much more reliable.

3. pH Mother dough is necessary to, besides taste and crumb softness development, lower

the pH of the dough. By doing so, natural preservatives (various types of lactic acid, citric acid, etc.) are created.

During the fermentation of the mother dough, the pH will decrease to levels of < 4. After mixing and final proofing, the pH can reach 4,5 to 5.

3. Dough equipment Dough shaping Rademaker offers Croissant production lines to produce long shelf life croissants. Capacities starting at 800 kg up to over 2,000 kg per hour leading to a product quantity of 12,000 pieces an hour up to 70,000 pieces per hour. Capacities depend on the size and weight of the croissants.

The Rademaker Sigma Laminator will provide the correct laminated dough sheet. This dough sheet is fed towards the Rademaker Croissant production line. Because of the Low Stress Sheeter it is possible to handle doughs that require the long fermentation times that are required for long shelf life croissants.

4. Proofing, Baking, Packaging Handling The final proofing time of the croissants is very long. This is due to the usage of mother dough, the rich recipe, the usage of preservative and the very limited amount of water.

Depending on the recipe, we have seen final proofing times from 180 minutes to bakeries with over 300 minutes.

To avoid drying of the product and to keep the maximum of moisture inside of the product, the product should be baked with limited con-

vection and maximum radiation and conduction. Baking time depends heavily on the size of the product.

For example for a 65-gram product, the baking time is approximately 11 minutes.

A very important aspect that also determines the shelf life and product quality is the final step in the production process: packaging. Assuming that the croissant is packed in flowpack (horizontal) or trans wrap (vertical) packaging, there is the possibility to increase shelf life by making use of gas flushing: a mixture of Nitrogen 40% - 0% and Carbon dioxide 60% - 100%. For this procedure, it is necessary to use special equipment and special foil.

Summary of long shelf life croissant preservation Basically there are three ways of preserving the product: 1.. In the dough. By lowering pH by long fermentation/ mother dough technology or by adding calcium propionate. In addition, the filling can contain preservatives that has effect on croissant crumb.

2. Special crust treatment.

3. Around the croissant by gas flush during the wrapping process.

hile the samovar1 is no longer a must in every Russian home, the tradition of tea-drinking is very much alive in the country. It goes back to long winter evenings when family and friends spent hours upon hours drinking tea over a cozy chat. Tea was usually consumed with something sweet which contributed to the development of a whole new class of snacks “to go with tea”: jams, pancakes, cookies and chocolate. Because Russian people usually drink tea after every meal, the consumption of sweets is deeply rooted in Russian culture. To capitalize on this tradition, Essen Production AG, a Russian food manufacturer famous for its Makheev mayonnaise brand, decided to enter the confectionery market.

New plant, new product, new line Today, Essen Production offers more than 100 products under the Makheev brand, including ketchup, sauces, jams, spices, snacks and mayonnaise.

In 2011, after ten successful years in the market, the company acquired an old meat processing factory in Elabuga, the Republic of Tatarstan, which is a region of the Russian Federation, and converted it into a cutting-edge confectionery production facility. The company’s first confectionery products include a range of wafer sweets: “Arami”, “Moya lubimaya Jozy” (translated as “my beloved Jozy”) and “Vafelnaya Konfetka” (translated as “wafer sweets”). “Arami” is a glazed wafer treat with whole hazelnuts, “Moya lubimaya Jozy” is a semi-glazed wafer with whole hazelnuts, whereas “Vafelnaya Konfetka” is a bar consisting of three

wafers. In December 2012, Essen Production’s first confectionery product under working title “Konfetka” (translated as sweets) began its maiden voyage to the tea tables of Russian sweets lovers. “The new treat has instantly found its fans,” said Oleg Sukhorukov, deputy general director confectionery, Essen Production. “While delicate taste is the key factor in growing popularity of “Arami”, “Moya lubimaya Jozy” and “Vafelnaya Konfetka”, to draw consumer attention at the store shelf, the product needed attractive packaging.”

When looking for a suitable packaging line, Essen Production sought out a solution that would offer the flexibility to package a variety of wafer products and address ever changing consumer preferences. After evaluating several packaging suppliers, Essen Production chose the solution from Bosch Packaging Technology consisting of the Lane Distribution System (LDS), five inline feeders (Pack Feeder 4) and five flow wrappers Pack 401. The Pack 401 ma-

chines are executed in a 4+1 configuration, which allows for undisrupted operations since one of the five lines is always on standby mode and can be used as a backup when another wrapper needs to be offline for maintenance, cleaning or any other issue.

Seamless line To ensure that small wafers are packaged without bottlenecks and downtime, Bosch introduced its LDS (Lane Distribution System). The oscillating

diagonal positioned side guides streamline the products into four equal rows, one wafer behind another, in perfect order to avoid jams and other related machine stoppages. The wafer rows are then diverted to the modular product infeed system and transferred to the Pack 401 horizontal flow wrapper.

Bosch’s LDS was specifically developed for small products and accommodates random product arrival at high production rates. Able to process up to 2,600 wafers per minute, the line achieves the highest possible efficiency by ensuring that products are automatically transported from one line part to another in the event of a breakdown. In addition, different modules, such as buffering and product inspection, across the entire packaging line ensure that the quality of the delicate wafers is maintained throughout the packaging process.

Waste and damage levels are therefore kept to the absolute minimum.

“Wafer products are fragile and unstable, making them a very demanding application to handle and package,” said Kasper Rentenaar, area sales manager, Bosch Packaging Technology. “We offered Essen Production a solution to overcome these challenges and ensure the highest possible quality.”

Wafers in all varieties Because Russian consumers enjoy variety and choice when it comes to sweets, Essen Production developed several versions of its confectionery treats. Today, the company offers wafers with or without nuts, with or without decoration, and with creamy, chocolate or milky glazing. “Arami” and “Moya lubimaya Jozy” are produced in a single pyramid-shaped wafer only 2.5 centimeters wide, whereas “Vafelnaya Konfetka” is a bar consisting of three crispy wafer pyramids.

To ensure all of these product variations could be handled efficiently, Bosch designed a streamlined packaging line, which seamlessly integrates the LDS, infeed system and Pack 401 horizontal flow wrapper.

The line’s compact footprint allows Es-

sen Production to make optimal use of its available production space. In addition, the horizontal flow wrapper features easy to operate electronic controls and mechanical reproducible adjustments for quick changeovers and reduced downtime.

High-speed for growing wafer craving To prepare itself for rapid increases in production volumes, Essen Production also required its packaging solution to have the ability to adapt from semi- to full automation, and from medium- to high-speed wrapping. The Pack Feeder 4 is capable of belt speeds up to 120 meters per minute, whereas the Pack 401 flow wrapper packages around 700 wafers per minute. To further maximize uptime, the Pack 401 features an automatic film splicer with a sensor that allows changeovers to a new film reel without stopping the machine. This feature not only reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO) of the system for Essen Production, but also allows the company to package its new treats more efficiently and be prepared for growing market demand.

“Bosch’s solution provides us with the option of quick upscale as wafer treats gain popularity,” said Sukhorukov.

How do you see things changing/developing over the next five years?

As a business we’ve noticed a number of trends developing recently, which we believe will start to play even more of a key role in the years to come. Lightweighting, which reduces the amount of metal required to make a package, and sustainability are becoming increasingly more important – especially in the customer purchasing decision process. Steel packaging weighs 40% less than it did 40 years ago, and we are always looking for new ways to build upon that. But consumers also want responsible packaging, and, as metal is 100% recyclable, it can be infinitely recycled without losing its proprieties, making it a permanent reusable resource. Of course, new designs, shapes and decorating techniques are an ongoing development and as with any market, we need to keep our ideas new and interesting to engage consumers. We believe that metal packaging will continue to be a valuable asset in the industry, providing a premium look and feel to products, along with offering a level of protection that other types of packaging cannot.

What, in your opinion, has been the biggest breakthrough in the sector over recent years?

For us it has been the automation of producing our seated end packaging as opposed to the manual method used in the past. This process allows us to reduce production costs and increase throughput efficiency. At the

same time, the range of decorative techniques available is now far more advanced. Surface finishes offer a remarkable new level of shelf appeal.

Special finishes such as gloss or matt applications can add movement to a package, while the crackle finish conveys an aged and authentic look.

Pearlescent finishes provide depth and sophistication to the packaging.

It is known that consumers are more likely to buy a product after picking it up off from the retail shelf; therefore the feel of a package is an important physical interaction with a product. To this end, our range of coatings and finishes that blend inks and varnish add a tactile element to metal packaging. A “soft touch” finish, for example, renders a smooth and silky feel that is particular inviting.

Fiera Milano’s agreement with ANIMA: united until 2023

he year 2023 is on the horizon. Fiera Milano and ANIMA (Federation of National Associations of Mechanical and Engineering Industries) are choosing to focus on long-term goals, renewing and further enhancing their collaboration in the food equipment sector for the next 4 biennial editions of HostMilano. The objective: to make this partnership all the more strategic and effective. In the next few years, it is going to take on the challenge of further strengthening Made in Italy’s leading position worldwide, and expanding it into new markets.

As the world’s landmark show for technology, design and services for Equipment, Coffee and Food, HostMilano is one of the few select trade fairs with which ANIMA works closely. A LABELPACK, WIDE RANGE OF LABELLING SYSTEMS

T

he confectionery industry is one of the most successful sector of LABELPACK. Thanks to their labelling solutions, such as the application of one or more labels onto food containers or the management of barcodes and variable data printing, the company is able to deal with several issues related to the product automatic identification and customisation.

One of the most requested solutions is the label print and apply system onto different sides of a thermoformed pack containing cakes, ice cream, desserts and other confectionery products. For all these food containers there is the possibility to apply the label at the top and bottom sides of a pack including information such as variable data – ingredients, date of manufacture, expiration date and barcodes.

Another highly requested solution is the apply system of one label onto three sides of a food container: top side, bottom side and front face.

BESPOKE LINE KEEPS THE BISCUITS FLOWING

G

reater efficiency, improved flexibility and enhanced quality control are the major benefits of a bespoke packing line created for leading biscuit and pastry manufacturer Poppies International by Ishida Europe’s Belgian agent BRN. The new line at Poppies’ factory in Zonnebeke, Belgium comprises an Ishida CCW-R-108P linear multihead weigher with a special distribution system that enables it to handle both trays and bags of biscuits, while an Ishida DACS checkweigher and IX-GA 4075 X-ray system provide weight and quality checks for all pack types.

The Ishida multihead weigher is achieving 50 packs per minute on a typical 125g tray. Accuracy is to within 0.5g and overall the weigher is delivering an efficiency level in excess of 95% for this challenging product and application.

Poppies manufactures its delicate sugar-glazed puff pastry biscuits in two shapes – Twists and Palmiers. As well as its own brand, the company also produces the biscuits for many national and international retailers.

This equates to around six different pack formats, both trays and bags,

in a range of sizes from 75g to 400g.

As a result, during a typical shift, the company might need to effect up to seven changeovers.

The new BRN/Ishida system enables these changeovers to be carried out in just 15 minutes thanks to two important factors. The linear configuration of the Ishida weigher is ideal for fragile biscuits and it allows two distribution systems to sit comfortably beneath the weigher. A special BRN-designed tray denester feeds the trays to two dipping funnels that place the biscuits into the trays. These can be changed for a second funnel that places the biscuits into individual compartments on a conveyor which takes them to a bagmaker.

Equally important, the three Ishida machines (multihead weigher, X-ray inspection system and checkweigher) are all controlled by a single Control Unit, meaning that the settings for every pack format on each machine can be easily called up by the touch of a single button on the panel.

The installation of the Ishida IX-GA X-ray system has also delivered an

important enhancement to Poppies’ quality control, as production manager Geert Vandoorne explains: “Before the X-ray, the biscuits would pass through a metal detector immediately after coming out of the oven.

Nevertheless, the packing operation involves a number of additional pieces of equipment, so it was more appropriate for the metal detector to be placed further down the line. This however created another problem as some of the trays feature aluminium foil seals, while the bags are tied with a metal clip, and these factors would prevent the metal detector from operating properly.”

By comparison Ishida’s X-ray system is able to detect unwanted objects through metallised film, and its advanced technology can also mask the metal clip on the bags without reducing the detection performance of foreign bodies. Missing or additional clips are also identified.

In addition, the IX-GA 4075 is able to spot a wider range of contaminants and can pinpoint the location of any foreign object despite the fact that the biscuits are quite densely packed in the bags and trays.

The new line at Poppies incorporates the company’s existing bagmaker, flow wrapper and boxing machine with BRN supplying the three new Ishida machines along with transfer conveyors and elevators.

Geert Vandoorne is pleased with the new line.

After baking, the biscuits are taken on an inclined conveyor through a ventilation system that cools them down before being transferred to a bucket elevator to take them to the linear mulithead weigher. An important modification to the line here is the inclusion of a special buffering system for the biscuits. If there is a problem further down the packing line, the feed conveyor to the bucket elevator goes into a backward and forward motion in order to collect the biscuits and hold them at this stage.

A 50 mt fully automated wrapping line with integrated Pick & Place unit In some peculiar stories, emotions start from the beginning of the project when the technical studies and the designing phase have the only target to get to the

point in the most efficient and elevated way. This installed line includes primary and secondary flow wrapping starting from the end of a noodles processing line. Noodle cakes are distributed carefully to the three wrapping lines thanks to dedicated row distributors and highperformance pressure less feeding and timing systems. The row distributor Model SMART, developed within Eurosicma group, is able to control and distribute orderly products coming in rows from the processing line, ensuring a dynamic and continuous feeding of the whole line. Each distribution station is in real time communication with the complete system and thanks to the technology employed able to grant a dynamic feeding and a gentle handling of the products. No gap between the distributed rows and alignment of the products are ensured. Such requirements are fundamental to enter the “in line” timing phase using the patented pressure less function of the Feeding & Timing system HSF8. This is a peculiar system for high-speed flow wrapping equipped with 8 independent servodriven belts able to avoid any friction and pression during the timing process.

It is particularly suitable for thin prod-

ucts, enrobed chocolate bars, jellies, cup cakes, nougats, cereal bars and delicate products like noodle cakes that need a very gentle handling. Such sophisticated feeding system is equipped with auto-tensioning and auto-centering belts’ system and allows an easy and fast tool-free cleaning for plates, belts and transmission rollers.

Such huge wrapping line includes also multipack wrapping. To link primary and secondary flow pack machines, Eurosicma developed the MPF -MultiPack Feeder-. It is a fully automated feeding system that can be combined with the flow wrapper EURO 88 for primary wrapping. Such system is able to orientate the flow packs, grouping them in the desired quantity and finally, by means of a 2 axis driven Pick & Place system, transfer the created portions directly to the secondary flow wrapper’s feeding chain. Emotions started from the beginning but kept on growing, reaching at the end of the supply the top level.

Request of a powerful automatization. Emotions of challenge.

When feelings seem to be strong from the beginning, at the end they become exciting. This is the case of a special request of one of the most relevant biscuits manufacturer, active since 1857, who has a very deep know how in the equipment technologies and decided to start a project with Eurosicma, as partner. This project was a reorganization of the whole factory management where higher levels of automatization started to be necessary. The aim was to transfer the hardest jobs - done by people - to automatic actions of dedicated machines, in order to let people work as supervisors and control managers, avoiding alienation.

The study and the development of dedicated and fully customized feeders allow switching from manual feeding and operations to successful fully automated distribution and packaging processes.

Out of the extrusion line for filled biscuits, Eurosicma dedicated feeding equipment transfers products to the portioning units that automatically create the exact portions, consequently downloaded into double flight-bar conveyors. The APVF Model – Automatic Volumetric Portion Feeder-, available

with different numbers of lanes depending on the volumes of production and the project’s characteristics to be satisfied. It is an efficient solution to handle both dry and sandwich biscuits; it is completely servo-motorized, driven and controlled by the wrapper and capable of reaching a speed of 25 cycles per minute. Thanks to the specific technology employed this slugs feeder is able to grant an extreme gentle handling of the products with an easy and fast change size. After the automatic portioning, the biscuits positioned on edge are transferred into double flight-bar conveyors to be finally delivered to the flow wrappers for biscuits on edge Model EURO 88 EDG. For this specific project Eurosicma developed a dedicated 90° Soft Transfer Unit able to manage two portions each cycle, in a dynamic way and following the movement of the wrapper chain, keeping the small biscuits in the proper position.

“VINSTAR” is the trade mark under which Herti sales its wine designed aluminum closures, among which is “VINSTAR SMART” – an innovative product, first of its kind on the market with PVC-free granulate gasket VinTellox, suitable for still and fizz wines(such as frizzante, perlwein, and cider), and compatible with existing equipment for capping wine bottles. The liner is suitable for pasteurization and keeps the internal pressure up to 0.8 MPa-the most suitable liner for a wide range of fizz wines.

Herti provides the two most preferred sizes PP30x60 mm BVS and PP 28x44 mm. Recently, more and more popular for bottling wines become other sizes of aluminum screw caps that Herti can offer: PP25x33 mm, PP22x30 mm, PP25x43 mm, 30x24 mm.

For the market area of bottled mineral waters, carbonated drinks and juices, Herti provides different solutions – aluminum and plastic closures – 28х15.5mm; 30х25mm; PCO; 48×41mm and plastic handles as well as our latest innovative composite closure named DORADO. The aluminum closure with safety plastic

ring that is tamper-evident and protects from injuries is designed for capping high and middle class quality still and sparkling mineral waters in glass bottles. This solution is suitable for ozone and sensitive waters as the compound it uses is PVC-free. Raw materials used to manufacture plastic caps meet EU regulations that guarantee origin and have organoleptic characteristics. Herti offers aluminum closures PP28x15.4 mm with PVC or PVC free compound and with or without side-split. Both types are suitable for pasteurization of juices and carbonated drinks. All plastic caps produced by Herti could be used for bottling mineral and table still waters, while PCO closures find application for sparkling waters and carbonated soft drinks. Our new closure “Vinstar Smart” in sizes PP28x44 mm and PP30x60 mm can be an elegant decision for sealing not only wines, but also water, juice and other beverages.

Herti produces olive oil caps in several sizes: PP31.5x24 mm, PP31.5x44 mm and PP31.5x60 mm with different pourers. The closures could be used also for capping vinegar, sauces or liquid spices.

Productivity, safety and efficiency Choosing the Schneider Electric automation solution has been pivotal in helping Newtec Labelling to shape its innovative idea: Panther represents a series of new machines with unique performances using an innovative system of notch centring, which disposes of a vision system with a single external fixed camera, that can also be placed remotely, instead of multiple, mechanically oriented cameras.

“The machine directs the container so that it is placed exactly in the right point, making the entire process easier and obtaining a much higher number of labeled containers per hour, while the electronic vision control ensures the accuracy of the result”, says the owner of Newtec Labelling.

Considering the “functioning of the machine”, we decided to have a Magelis industrial system made by Schneider Electric that allows the management of both the vision system and the HMI interface.

On top of that, in order to ensure the maximum safety and operability, we

Finally, the energy efficiency of this innovative range of machines is guaranteed by the use of brushless motors that can be configured and optimized by each customer’s need: the ILM motors with built-in circuitry are part of the PacDrive 3 system dedicated to the packaging world.

HOW TO ACHIEVE PACKAGING WITH PERSONALITY The designers Paco Adín (Supperstudio) and Santo Cabrera (Solo Advertising have come up with the recipe for achieving differentiated packaging.

“D

ifferent, surprising, motivating and, above all, something that brings a smile to buyers’ faces and makes them a little happier.” This is how the designer Paco Adín of the agency Supperstudio defines packaging with personality. Adín, who designs fun and multi-award-winning packaging, puts forward eight keys to attaining unique packaging: 1. Tell a story, seduce with simplicity and, if possible, use humour.

2. Less is more. If something doesn’t contribute, it just gets in the way.

3. Make it easy to buy. Use packaging to help your customer identify your product.

4. Make the consumer think a little.

5. Take risks; be audacious. Break the rules.

6. Differentiate, stand out. Having personality means doing things differently. It’s very hard to stand out by doing the same as everybody else.

7. Encourage consumer participation.

Play games with them to make the customer think.

8. Think green and never let your brand become a grey one.

For Adín, every project is a creative challenge: “I like to wring out my brain cells to come up with the best idea.

What a coincidence! It’s sure to be the simplest one, but it’s never the first,” the Basque designer assures us.

The perfect brief for unique packaging All designers agree that the first step to achieving differentiated packaging is to be in possession of a good brief.

Paco Adín It is the client who has to define precisely their requirements, the functions the packaging needs to perform and the brand values that need to be transmitted to have an impact on the consumer. Santi Cabrera, director of the agency Solo Advertising, defines six essential factors to include in a good brief.

1. Make it comprehensive and include as much useful information as possible for the agency.

2. Explain the company’s starting point and its values: what stage has it reached? What are its values and what has been done previously with regard to packaging? In this way an evolutionary line can be traced, defining the elements that need reinventing and those that need to be kept as part of its core essence.

3. Define the company’s target market.

4. Define the competition and the market leaders. It is important to include a study of the market that shows what methods the competition use, what innovations they

Santi Cabrera contribute and how they are perceived. It is essential to ascertain the trends within the sector. Only this way can the design be differentiated to surprise the end user.

5. Specify the objectives: what does the brand hope to achieve with the new packaging? Increase market share? Establish a reputation?

6. Other helpful information: the types of material to be used in the new design, the safety of the packaging, the size and density of the product, the manufacturing process, etc.

Following the advice of Paco Adín and Santi Cabrera may not guarantee success, but it could be a good starting point for attaining packaging with personality, as explained by both designers during the last Hispack.

Feature 1. Automatic balancing Regular cappers require a balanced infeed to avoid empty lanes and broken or incomplete sandwiches.

But imbalance occurs regularly by taking away products upstream (for quality measurements) or misbakes.

Re-balancing then requires manual intervention, by adding new products to the line. Not any longer. Houdijk offers fully automatic re-balancing.

Missing products will only stop their own lane. When it is replenished, the lane will start again in synchronization with the other lanes.

With individually controlled squeeze nozzles. So no mechanically or pneumatically operated pistons and no mechanical adjustments. Feature 3. Side-alignmentsystem To keep rectangular biscuits in control for a properly sidealigned sandwich, regular cappers use narrow channels. Creating potential blockages by small crumbs. The Houdijk Capper has wider and more forgiving

channels. And a realignment device that pushes rectangular and square base cakes sideways to their exact position. This will ensure a properly aligned sandwich.

Feature 4. Real-time motion adjustment Any capper features many mechanical movements. When properly synchronized, they create a perfect sandwich. However, the base cakes and the cream are subject to small daily (even hourly) changes. Requiring small mechanical adjustments to properly set the equipment. The Houdijk Capper features an allservo system, in which all important motions can be adjusted via the HMI in real-time. Right when the equipment is in production: no tools, no mess. The adjustments are intuitive and can be done by a regular operator.

Feature 5. Real-time deposit weight adjustment Each nozzle of the Houdijk Manifold can be tuned individually to a 1/100 second (through the HMI) for a perfect deposit shape and weight. Because of its unique way of opening and closing the valve (1-500 times per minute) round, rectangular and odd-shaped deposits are possible, as well as encapsulated deposits.

Celebration at inauguration of new company building Major investment in Theegarten-Pactec’s company history

Theegarten-Pactec, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of packaging technologies for confectionery, today inaugurated a new manufacturing/assembly complex and office building at the company’s long-standing headquarters in Dresden. The total investment of € 30 million represents the largest-ever investment in the history of the packaging machinery manufacturer

“F

or Theegarten-Pactec, the new building is the foundation needed to continue building high-tech machines for our customers and secure long-term growth,” explains Markus Rustler, President & CEO of Theegarten-Pactec. “The new building has also resulted in the creation of around 50 new jobs.

We are delighted that the first construction phase is now complete,

thus setting another milestone in the company’s history, which goes back over 80 years.”

The company’s positive performance in recent years meant that the existing buildings had grown too small. The new assembly buildings are designed to create better assembly conditions for complex lines and in particular to facilitate startup operations in Dresden itself so that seamless project workflows are

guaranteed for Theegarten-Pactec and its customers. The TheegartenPactec site will increase in size as a result, extending to a total area of 50,000 m2.

The entire project will be implemented in three construction phases and will also involve the phased demolition of existing buildings. During the first construction phase, the office building and the first part of the assembly/manufacturing building were

constructed. This phase is now complete. This is being followed by the demolition of the old building and the construction of the second half of the manufacturing and assembly facilities. Both should be complete by mid-2017. The new construction consists of an office building with production and warehouse areas, staff amenities and technology facilities as well as a car park with 170 parking spaces. The offices provide space for various usages such as research and development, design, customer service and sales. An employee canteen with a terrace is also located in the interior courtyard. Mechanical production and varnishing is accommodated in the manufacturing building. A number of productionrelated offices with a gallery are situated adjacent to the manufacturing building. An assembly building and a warehouse are also under construction. The demolition of existing buildings and the construction of the new facilities are taking place on the site without interrupting operations. A total of 5,500 m2 of office space has been built with a high-spec building envelope, which is to be certified in accordance with the KfW Development Bank’s energy efficiency standard. The office building is a steel concrete construction in a cast-in-place concrete structure with beam-less flat slab ceilings. The facade is a curtain wall consisting of various materials such as fibre cement panels, metal panels and expanded metal.

The offices have a ventilation and air-conditioning system.

The assembly and manufacturing buildings, which are fitted with cranes and hoisting equipment throughout, will cover a total area of 15,500 m2.

They are equipped with radiant ceiling panels for district heating and a ventilation system is also installed.

The new buildings provide space for 400 workstations. The location in the Reick district of Dresden is an urban, mature setting with public transport links and easy access to the A17.

With 400 employees, TheegartenPactec is a major employer in the Dresden region.

“Thanks to careful planning, this mammoth project has so far not impacted on our daily operations, the design and manufacture of packaging systems,” says Rustler. “The three pillars of the construction project – time, cost and quality – are in line with expectations due to outstanding planning by our partner Vollack and the execution of these plans by the individual trades.”

With a team of 300 employees, including 150 architects and engineers, Vollack is a specialist in the methodical development, planning and implementation as well as revitalisation of sustainable and ener

gy-efficient offices, industrial buildings and health sector buildings.

Theegarten-Pactec worked on its first joint project with Vollack in Saxony in 2006: the renovation of the eastern hall (Osthalle) in the building (assembly and warehouse building) in a project valued at approx. € 300,000.

Even then it could be seen that the building would need to be completely renovated as some of Theegarten’s building stock in Dresden dates from the 1950s and 1960s. In 2010, the two partners developed the initial concrete ideas for converting or renovating Theegarten-Pactec’s old buildings. In October 2010, development of the site with the old buildings began. Land was subsequently purchased at the old site, opening up new prospects for the future. The building application was submitted in April 2013. The demolition work commenced in November 2013.

EMIRATES REFRESHMENTS COMPANY ACHIEVES 25% COST SAVINGS

WITH PRODUCTION LINE UPGRADES FROM SIDEL

T

o boost efficiency and maintain a competitive edge in what is a tough market, Emirates Refreshments Company (ERC) has carried out a short-neck conversion on its PET bottling line. ERC, brand owners of Jeema Mineral Water and carbonated soft drink O Cola, worked with Sidel, the leading provider of production equipment and services for liquids in PET, to upgrade its production line with Sidel’s innovative PET packaging solutions.

“We had worked with Sidel for the past 17 years and we have always been satisfied with their solutions. By upgrading our PET production line with Sidel’s innovative solutions, we were able to make substantial cost savings that translated into 25 per cent annually,” said Munther Khlifat Plant Manager at ERC. The beverage sector is expected to continue growing in the UAE across various categories. In 2015, the consumption of water, the most consumed beverage item, stood at around 1.13 billion litres and is forecast to increase by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.2

per cent to reach 1.48 billion litres by 2019. The solutions introduced for ERC included a blower, a filler and a combi, along with packaging and line improvement services. The objective in making the investment was to increase efficiency, reduce energy consumption, save raw materials, and cut production costs by lightweighting the company’s packaging through moving to a Sidel StarLite™ base and short neck. Muhammed Elgharib, also a Plant Manager at ERC, commented – “By changing the design of the PET bottle and shortening the bottle neck to adopt a Short Neck 29/25 closure, we were able to produce attractive new designs that weigh considerably less – 27.5 grams compared to 32 grams for 1.5 litre bottles; and 11.6 grams compared to 17 grams for 500 ml bottles.”

Short necks offer tremendous economic gains and reduce post-consumer waste by cutting down the material used. The Sidel StarLite base gives added durability, stability and overall resistance to the bottles, providing higher bottle integrity throughout the supply chain without

compromising on the safety standards of the beverages inside.

In addition, ERC introduced Sidel ECO lamps to the PET line to provide more precise and more efficient heating. This reduced the line’s electricity consumption and therefore also contributed to the cost savings achieved, as well as improving the PET line’s performance in terms of sustainability.

“We understand very clearly the potential impact of lightweighting on brand value and the consumer experience.

We are glad that ERC can now save substantial costs, remain competitive, and achieve their sustainability goals after upgrading their PET line with Sidel technology,” stated Samuel Gobbe, Customer Service Director at Sidel.

AND THE EMMI GOES TO… SONOCO Swiss dairy choses IML packaging for about 50 yoghurt varieties

S

wiss yoghurt is becoming a top seller in Asia and the Middle East, whether it is pineapple yoghurt in Asia or strawberry flavour in the United Arab Emirates. The Emmi Group headquartered in Lucerne, Switzerland relies on Sonoco’s in-mould labelling (IML) solutions to pack its about 50 different yoghurt varieties and flavours. These high-quality packages are produced using thin-walled injection techniques and replace the previous deep-drawn cups with self-adhesive labels.

Emmi is the largest milk processor in Switzerland with some 5,300 employees (adjusted for part-time working) and is one of Europe’s premium dairies. In its home market, the company focuses on the development, production and marketing of a full range of dairy and fresh products as well as the production, ageing and trade of primarily Swiss cheeses. Outside Switzerland, Emmi concentrates on brand concepts and specialities in European and North American markets, and increasingly on emerging markets outside of Europe.

Emmi exports its products from Switzerland into more than 60 countries.

Every year, Sonoco’s packaging plant located in Zwenkau, Germany delivers several million cups for Emmi Yoghurt to Ostermundigen, Switzerland. Emmi fills about 50 varieties of yoghurt into the 100-gram polypropylene cups. The Swiss dairy exports 9 out of 10 cups to other countries and the trend is increasing. Especially in Asia and the Middle East, the demand for Swiss yoghurt is on the rise. In these markets, detailed information on the products

is particularly important – a field in which Sonoco’s IML cups offer key advantages. The all-around designed packages increase the decoration area by 25 percent, offering plenty of space for product information. As with all fresh products, hygiene is also a major issue - one that begins with the package. The thin-walled injection process used by Sonoco ensures a high standard of hygiene. Prior to injection, the granular base material is melted at approximately 200 degrees Celsius, which is an ideal temperature for food packaging. The entire production at the Sonoco site near Leipzig is certified according to the BRC-IoP standard for food packaging and is subject to strict quality management.

In-mould labelling opens up a wide range of design possibilities for decorating packages, producing outstanding tactile and visual effects, and even highly realistic photographic images.

Labels are available with a matt or glossy surface, and they provide additional product protection against UV rays and light. These types of labels can be printed using either offset or gravure printing.

ack Expo 2016 was held in Chicago on 6-9 November. It was a very successful event that allowed ALTECH to broaden its lead/prospect base on the wide US market and beyond.

Pack Expo in Chicago - which took place on the 60th Anniversary of its debut - is one of the most renowned processing and packaging shows at international level. Over the years, the number, quality, and relevance of its exhibitors have confirmed the prestige and importance of this event.

This is especially true this year, so much so that Jim Pittas, sr. vice president of PMMI, described this edition as “an overwhelming success”. The figures provided suggest that Pack Expo 2016 has been the largest show in the history of Pack

Expo, not only in terms of visitors (over 46,000) but also because of the presence of 2.512 exhibitors spread over 116,000 square meters on the McCormick Place show floor.

High-speed solutions for confectionery sector

he increasing speed of production of process lines and in primary packaging machines (typically flow pack) in the confectionery sector, is a constant challenge that our company has to deal with. A task made even more onerous by the nature of the products, which are often fragile and need to be treated with extreme caution to prevent them from reaching damaged the final consumer, thus creating an image damage to the costumers companies.

Material Handling SpA has developed in recent years advanced systems to manage the products output from the primary packaging machines; in order to unify them on a single line, or split them on multiple tracks, depending on the chosen solution for secondary packaging.

incoming products so that they cannot collide with each other on the subsequent unification tape. The unification conveyor is a further conveyor belt where the products are carried in a single row using one or two guides posed like a funnel.

At the speeds provided it is necessary to overcome the concept of the fixed guide, as any slowdown of products in contact with the guide would result in a loss of timing and risk of interlocking. Event that with high production cadence that would have catastrophic effects and would lead to immediately block of the upstream machines.

For this reason, the chosen solution is to replace the fixed guides with

motorized vertical belt conveyors that they can adapt the speed to that of the underlying tape.

The system is designed to unify the incoming productions from two lines into single row with products about 150 mm long at a rate of 300 ppm for each row: the result is a final output of 600 ppm on a single row; the actual output speed of the products by the system is between 110 and 140 m/min, depending on the characteristics of the products and the needs of the downstream secondary packaging machine.

The machine is manufactured with the highest construction standards, the phaser conveyors are equipped with easy-change system without tools.

The standard control system is a Siemens PLC with color operator panel, as well as inverters, brushless and related drives are Keb or Elau, gearboxes and asynchronous are SEW. On request, it is possible to install Rockwell Allen-Bradley electronic.

An important feature that distinguishes the MH compared to other systems on the market is the ability to control the output step of the products to obtain a regular cadence. Conversely, many competitors offer a management of the products in trains, in fact forcing a complete re-phase of the products before entering the secondary machine, with consequent increase of costs.

MH has recently acquired a major order for a leading manufacturer in the confectionery industry in the Middle East. The supply comprises three merger systems 2 in 1 and a merger system 3 in 1 accompanied by all the connection conveyors with

the flowpack machines upstream of the system.

Sorter groups In the case where the solution chosen for the secondary packaging is the multi robot type with a vision system, the need is to direct the products on multiple lines from the output of the primary packaging machines.

MH offers a wide range of solutions, from a mobile channel systems to those multi paddle, all moved by brushless motors.

The novelty is constituted by a discontinuous movable guide system.

The group consists of a battery of two phasing blet conveyors controlled by brushless motors, which step in a regular manner the products directed to the conveyor on which the sorting occurs.

The division from 1 to 2 lines is performed using a motorized vertical belt conveyor, superimposed on the sorting conveyor, on which are mounted some flights with the required length that, on alternate paces, accompany the products towards the outside track. As the shift occurs gradually and at the same speed of the underlying belt, there are no strong stresses on the product and the system is particularly suitable for fragile products.

Even in this case, as for the mergers, the cadence of the products at the exit of the machine it is guaranteed and does not require another phase before the secondary packaging machines.

The production speed reached are identical to those already mentioned for the mergers.

The robust, semi-automatic strapping machine was developed as a successor to the MOM-7 and is based on the RO-M Fusion, the latest evolution of the established RO-M series. “Many users are familiar with the models in the RO-M series as reliable entry-level machines. Mosca launched the first RO-M on the market in the 1970s.”

Wholesalers, distribution centers and logistics services have sworn by these compact units for decades. Several thousand RO-M Fusion machines have been successfully sold on the market. In keeping with Mosca’s modular construction concept, many core components of the MO-M-8 – including the machine frame, strap dispenser and sealing unit – are constructed in the same way as the RO-M Fusion. But the semi-automatic MO-M-8 dispenses with the strap guide frame. To strap a product, the operator places the package on the machine and lays the strap on manually. The unit is available with an optional table stop to facilitate optimum positioning of the individual packages. Strap return, tension adjustment and the welding of the strap ends are conducted automatically after the strap is placed in the sealing unit to initiate the strapping process.

Energy-efficient and low maintenance The proven standard 3 sealing unit, long reserved for high-performance

machines, featured in the RO-M Fusion is at the heart of the new MO-M-8.

Temperature is regulated via a controller on the heating blade, and multiple decentralized DC motors replace the central drive in the sealing unit. The direct drive for these functions completely eliminates the need for wearing parts, including toothed belts, clutches and chains. For the user, this means high availability and low maintenance. An automatic strap feed on the sealing unit supports coil changing, which is made easy thanks to the quick-change system. The MO-M-8 is also extremely energy efficient with a power consumption of only approx. 120 watts.

The machine is controlled via Mosca’s proprietary MSCB-1 real-time control panel. “Operators can set the strap tension or required strap length via the potentiometer to optimize the process for their specific application,” Zwieb explains. “The soft tension capability makes it easy to strap even delicate products. The strap feed can also be easily readjusted via a push button.”

An illuminated service push-button indicates the machine’s current operating state with colored signals. This means that the operator can see right away if the heating has not yet reached welding temperature or the safety circuit is interrupted, and can respond accordingly. The MO-M-8 is suitable for packages that are a minimum of 80 mm wide and 10 mm high. Polypropylene (PP) straps with a width of five, eight or twelve millimeters may be used according to requirements.

BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS TO PURIFY AND REUSE URBAN AND INDUSTRIAL WASTE WATERS IN A ZERO KILOMETRE WAY

W

e ECO-SISTEMI Srl is involved in research, development, planning and realization of biological systems to purify and reuse urban and industrial waste waters in a zero kilometre way: compact solutions, particularly indicated for the treatment, the reuse and the saving of water in communities far from the big centralized depuration plants and from the sewer system.

RCBR – Rotating Cell Biofilm Reactor. RCBR devices are self-installing modules: they have very reduced dimensions and they achieve the removal of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous by a biological pro-

cess known as “biofilm system”. In this system, plastic objects, called “biological carriers”, are in contact with waste waters to be purified: they independently develop a bacterial biofilm which is able to nourish itself by the pollutants, giving clean water back to the environment.

RCBR devices have a broad spectrum of application for any type of biodegradable waste waters; specially urban waste waters, industrial agricultural and food (for example, fruit/vegetable washing, wine, beer and fruit juice production, meatmaking, breeding farms, etc.). The RCBR devices are realized in 8 models; they are able to treat

waste waters produced by 50 up to 3.000 equivalent inhabitants (p.e).

It is possible to combine in pair the devices, by a joint invented by ECOSISTEMI: in this way, it is possible to treat a greater amount of waste waters, also for small/medium communities, up to 15.000 inhabitants (for example, 5 modules of 3.000 p.e).

How does the process work? RCBR device is a stainless steel reinforced rotating cell which slowly rotates inside a stainless steel tank. Waste waters are flowed into the tank by a pump which moves the liquid to be purified from a tank to the machine.

ements which rotate into the dirty water developing bacterial film.

If the cell partially rotates inside the water, bacterial communities remove the organic carbon and oxidize ammonium to nitrate.

If the cell totally rotates inside dirty water, the system has no oxygen and it reduces nitrates to molecular nitrogen. Otherwise, if we put together two RCBR devices, one that partially rotates into the dirty water and the other one totally immersed, we can obtain a complete remediation that removes both the organic component and the nitrogen component. ECO-SISTEMI has realized a sequence of devices which operate this process in a “nutshell”, without making any cement work, without using expensive compressors for the bacterial oxygenation. They are so simple that they do not need any specialized maintenance and they have very competitive costs.

Installation typology. The classic installation typology allows the realization of a totally plant design solution, with sedimentation and mud recovery. The RCBR device can be integrated to the green technol-

ogy known as “phytodepuration”.

Matching only one nitrifying RCBR module to a bed of phytodepuration (waterproof and planted dig with water vegetable extracts), it is possible: a) to reduce more than 1/3 the dimension of the phytodepuration bed’s dig. b) to use the phytodepurator as disinfection system of the purified water’s bacterial component to be able to collect and reuse it for the

plant and garden irrigation. c) to remove in a total way the production and the problems of biological exhausted mud management produced by the plant itself.

Biological carriers. ECO-SISTEMI uses as bacterial carriers used plastic bottle caps. It is a noble and indestructible material available on the market at very cheap prices.

Depuration efficiency. In just one week, we have the creation of the bacterial biofilm and after three weeks we can see the 99,5% removal of suspended solids; the 98,7% of the organic substance (COD); the 99,3% of ammonium; the 93% of nitrites; the 92% of nitrates and the 84% of the total phosphorous.

These results allow to obtain a very high quality of the output waters, which can reach the surface water, respecting the European current regulations. Energetic consumption. RCBR devices need for their functioning only low consumption electric engines, about 10 times lower than an active mud traditional technology which uses compressors for the bacterial flora oxigenation.

In diesem System werden Plastikobjekte, sogenannte biologische “carriers”, mit dem Abwasser in Kontakt gebracht. Diese Plastikobjekte bilden selbständig einen BakterienBiofilm, der sich von den schädlichen organischen Stoffen im Abwasser “ernährt” und damit das Wasser säubert. Die RCBR-Maschinen haben einen breiten Anwendungsbereich für jede Art von biologisch abbaubarem Abwasser: zivile-kommunale Abwässer, Industrieproduktion in den Bereichen Agrar-Nahrungsmittel und Landwirtschaft-Tierhaltung (z.B. Weinproduktion, Bier, Fruchtsäfte, Fleischverarbeitung). 8 Modelle von RCBR stehen zur Auswahl: von 50 bis 3.000 Einwohnergleichwerten (EW).

Es können auch mehrere Maschinen gekoppelt werden, um größere Abwassermengen zu bearbeiten. Über die Erweiterung bis zu 15.000 EW (z.B. 5 Module zu 3.000 EW).

Wie funktioniert der Prozess? Die RCBR ist ein verstärkter rotierender “Korb” in Edelstahl, der sich langsam in einer Wanne (immer aus Edelstahl) dreht. Über eine Pumpe werden die zu klärenden Abwässer in die Wanne gepumpt. Im “Korb”, der zu 100% mit Plastikobjekten gefüllt ist, bilden die im Abwasser rotierenden biologischen “carriers” einen Bakterien-Film.

Wenn der Korb nur zum Teil im Wasser rotiert, bilden sich Bakterienkulturen, welche den organischen Kohlenstoff aus dem Abwasser entfernen und das Ammoniak zu Nitraten oxidieren.Wenn der Korb komplett im Wasser rotiert, wird dem System Sauerstoff entzogen, was zur Folge hat, dass sich die Nitrate zu molekularem Stickstoff reduzieren.

Zusammengefaßt bedeutet dies, dass wir über die Kombination von zwei RCBR-Maschinen (komplett und teilweise unter Wasser) eine vollständige Kläranlage erhalten, die sowohl die organischen Verbindungen aus

Kohlenstoff und Stickstoff vom Abwasser entfernt.

ECO-SISTEMI hat eine Serie von Maschinen entwickelt, die den Abbauprozeß in einer Art “Nußschalensystem” vollziehen und daher sind keine Betonarbeiten erforderlich und auch keine kostspieligen Kompressoren für die Sauerstoffversorgung der Bakterien notwendig.

Die RCBR ist so einfach konzipiert, dass sie keiner speziellen Wartung bedarf und preislich sehr günstig ist.

Installationsmöglichkeiten. Die klassische Installation sieht eine reine Maschinenlösung mit Sedimentation und Klärschlammwiederverwendung. Die RCBR-Maschine ist zudem als integrierbares System bei Pflanzenkläranlagen geeignet.

Kombiniert man ein RCBR-Modul zur Nitrifikation mit einer Pflanzenkläranlage (wasserdichter Aushub mit Wasserpflanzen bepflanzt) ist es möglich: a) Die Dimensionen der Pflanzenkläranlage um mehr als 1/3 zu reduzieren. b) die Pflanzenkläranlage als Desinfektions-System zu verwenden, um z.B. das gefilterte Wasser wiederum für die Bewässerung zu nutzen. c) die Bildung von biologischen Klärschlämmen zu vermeiden.

Die biologischen carrier. ECOSISTEMI verwendet als Bakterienträger recycelte Kunststoffkappen von Flaschen. Es ist ein hochwertiges und beständiges Material und auf dem Markt zu niedrigen Preisen verfügbar.

Reinigungsleistung. Die Bildung des bakteriellen Biofilms erfolgt in 1 Woche und nach drei Wochen werden bereits 99,5% der Schwebstoffe, 98,7% der organischen Substanz (COD), 99,3% des Stickstoffs in Form von Ammoniak, 93% des Nitritstickstoffs, 92% des Nitratstickstoffs und 84% des Gesamtphosphors abgebaut. Über diese Ergebnisse erreichen wir folglich eine sehr hohe Qualität des Ausgangs-Wassers, welches gemäß des geltenden italienischen Gesetzesdekrets 152/2006 in Oberflächengewässer weitergeleitet werden kann.

Geringer Energieverbrauch. Die RCBR-Maschinen benötigen für ihren Betrieb lediglich Elektromotoren mit niedrigem Verbrauch, in etwa 10 Mal weniger als traditionelle Technologien mit Belebtschlamm, welche energieintensive Kompressoren für die Sauerstoffversorgung der Bakterien brauchen.

Schubert opens new hall complex

GEARED UP FOR THE FUTURE– WITH CAPACITIES FOR FURTHER GROWTH

G

erhard Schubert GmbH opened a new factory complex at its Crailsheim location and began production. By putting this new assembly hall into operation, the company is increasing its production capacities and strengthening its position on its worldwide growth course.

After only 18 months of construction, the new hall complex covers 12,000 m² and can accommodate assembly, shipping and 40 office spaces. “Our new plant represents a significant milestone in our growth strategy,” explains Ralf Schubert. “With the new building, we will not only eliminate assembly bottlenecks, we are now able to further increase our serial production.” Schubert invested a total of 16 million euros in the new complex. In the future, along with an existing hall, the new hall will be used for final assembly of TLM machines.

Altogether, Schubert now has three halls with a total area of 32,000 m².

While building the complex, the company incorporated state-of-the-art environmentally friendly technology: air conditioning will take place via geothermal power, for which more than 75 holes were drilled to a depth of around 80 metres.

The manufacturer of high-performance packaging machines considers itself ideally equipped to gain an additional share of both growth markets and new business areas, such as the pharmaceutical industry. The company anticipates annual growth

of eight to ten percent within the next five years. In order to secure the necessary manufacturing capacity over the long term, the company is already looking at investing in a fourth hall by 2020.

A review of three recent trade fairs – FachPack in Nuremberg, Pack Expo in Chicago (USA) and Agropodmash in Moscow (Russia) - also indicates a very positive trend for the future.

At this year’s FachPack alone, Schubert successfully generated orders amounting to 4 million euros.

FAM Brings New Technology To The Table

L

ast month FAM launched the FAM TridisTM 240, a high capacity dicer for the frozen vegetable & fruit and French fry industry and the latest addition to FAM’s product line of industrial cutting machines. In the last two years, since the spring of 2014, FAM has introduced 8 new machines into its product line. Innovation is clearly an important key driver for the Belgian based company, but where can innovation be found in the food processing industry?

Food processing at the core The processing industry has changed in many ways since its inception. Starting out with the main focus on canning, evolving later into frozen foods and moving on now to include ready meals, fresh cut vegetables and fruit and even hypes such as pulled meat.

With those shifts in focus, the demands of the industry have altered as well. In the canning industry capacity took the lead and quality came in second. In the fresh vegetable and fruit industry there is no higher demand than the one for the best cut quality possible. Diamond shaped dices of pepper in your salad just will not do.

Not only the visual aspect of the end product matters, the industry has increased its demands in other areas as well. Hygiene has taken a more prominent role, because consumers, regulatory agencies and health organizations demand more transparency. From stainless steel motors, to sanitary seals and electro polishing of all product contact surfaces, experience has taught the food industry

to be as careful as possible when it comes to sanitation.

Another type of innovation is the surge of new cutting shapes and dimensions. Hype products such as pulled meat have entered the market, together with variations to existing products such as new shapes for potato chips and waffle fries. The competition in the retail market is fierce and this sources a demand for new, different and exclusive products as well a desire to process as efficiently as possible.

How to cut better The cutting machine plays a vital role in the processing line and can make a significant difference in product value. To give an example: in the fresh vegetable and fruit industry the shelf life of a product can diminish or increase the value of the product.

The longer the fruit and vegetables stay fresh, the better the product will

be received. The cutting process has a direct influence on that.

The better the product is cut, meaning the fewer cells are damaged in the process, the longer the shelf life will become.

Another example can be found in the potato chips industry. Recent studies have signaled that acrylamide has a direct negative influence on our health.

Acrylamide can be formed when amino acids interact with sugars in the presence of heat. In a potato processing line this happens in the fryer, when uncooked potato slices get baked at a high temperature.

When the potato slice gets cooked at a too high temperature it forms acrylamide. To prevent this, the temperature of the fryer has to remain as stable as possible. By cutting the potato into equal and stable slices the fryer needs to be adjusted as little as possible.

Investing in the future FAM has been a part of the food industry for more than 70 years, and is represented in more than 72 countries worldwide.

In the last couple of years FAM has made significant investments in production machinery, R&D development, new offices and test laboratories worldwide.

These investments have led to a total of eight new machine launches, including a completely new product line. What do these new products bring to the market?

The NECST step Specifically for the potato industry FAM has developed a new technology including a complete line of new cutting machines: NECSTTM. NECST is an acronym and stands for: Next Evolution in Centrifugal Slicing Technology.

The patented NECST technology tackles the predominant issues in the potato processing industry such as scrap rate, tapered slices and starch loss. Together with its sister company Stumabo, who supplies

the knives, FAM developed a completely new cutting head, impeller wheel and a line of machines.

For 50 years people have been using the now called ‘first generation’ cutting head. This head needs to be adjusted every hour to remain accurate and weighs 22 kg.

The new GapSetTM cutting head sets a new standard for operator-friendliness with a weight of only 12 kg, almost half of the first generation head that also reduces the number of parts by 20%.

The GapSet technology allows you to change the slice thickness, is more accurate and ensures knife stability without any adjustments while processing. Once the cutting heads are assembled, the GapSet Technology ensures constant slice accuracy throughout.

Set it and forget it, the cutting heads are (and remain) accurate.

A new product line Together with the new GapSet technology, FAM started developing a line of centrifugal slicers and shredders. The Centris product line was launched in 2014 with the smallest family member: the Centris 315. A new centrifugal slicer & shredder with a high-quality execution and the smallest footprint of any industrial centrifugal shredder in the market. Afterwards the FAM Centris 315P was launched, specialized in potato processing, followed by the FAM Centris 400: “The big brother of the Centris 315 and Centris 315P, respectively launched in 2014 and 2015.”

The Centris line has a patent pending cutting head technology at the heart of it, which has doubled the amount of cutting stations compared to the first generation cutting heads of the competition.

This means the machine can run at a much lower velocity, thus protecting the product from damage, but still keep the same high capacity the market demands. This principle drastically improves the shelf life, starch loss and product damage.

The FAM Centris line has another big innovation at the core: the Direct Drive System. The Direct Drive System replaces the expensive gear box that complicates maintenance and exists out of a carbon reinforced drive belt and two taper locked pulleys.

PACKO PUMPS REWRITES THE STANDARD FOR PRODUCT PUMPS TOGETHER WITH THE INDUSTRY

T

he vegetable and potato processing industry has changed profoundly. By strain refinement the potatoes that have to be pumped became much larger. The free passage in the product pumps has to follow this trend. Also the volumes that have to be pumped increased enormously and loss by damage is yet barely tolerated.

The pumps that are used in this market segment up till now score, widely considered, inadequately in that area and the demand for better performing pumps resounds more emphatically through recent years. That was also the reason for Packo Pumps to begin the re-design from zero. The result is the VPCP pump that rewrites the prevailing norm. The VPCP pump has been developed in collaboration with the industry. It has been tested extensively and proven radically incomparable. Packo Pumps challenges you.

Larger stainless steel pump casing First the needs and trends of the industry were identified and converted into design requirements. The full geometry of both the impeller and the pump casing was studied via CFD and redesigned with a view to the largest possible free passage and minimal product damage in the widest possible working area. The result of months of CFD study and several practice tests is a range of four pump types with a significantly larger pump casing but with the same mounting dimensions as the VDKM pumps (except for type 150-400). The principle remains a complete stainless steel pump, like the Packo standard dictates. Cleanability, corrosion resistance and more strict hygiene re-

quirements, after all, are gaining importance.

Vane replaces impellers A second intervention replaces the traditional channel impeller with an impeller with a single vane, which was specially developed by Packo for this pump series. The design of the vane plays a key role in the performances of the new VPCP pump. It also leaves a large free passage and is designed to keep product damaging minimal.

Research showed that by omitting the channel geometry the product damage is minimal over a much wider area

(flow and speed). A typical single channel impeller only shows a low product damage in a small zone around the BEP (Best Efficiency Point).

Test results prove 250% less product damage In order to evaluate and compare the product damage objectively Packo Pumps developed a test method that produces a dimensionless damage figure. The damage figures are both a quantitative (% of products being damaged by the pump) as qualitative (how serious is the damage?) weighing of the damage. The new VPCP pump scores a damage figure of 9.5. In comparison, the known VDKM pump registered a damage figure of 25.5. We can therefore state that the product damage in the new generation VPCP pumps is 2.5 times smaller than in the VDKM pumps. Also pumps with conventional 1-channel impellers were subjected to the same test. No single pump scored a damage figure below 14. We can therefore confidently say that the VPCP pump series sets a new benchmark in terms of product damage.

Sustainable construction In addition to the pump hydraulics, also the structure of the pump itself was taken in hand. The versions with larger mo-

tor capacities were shortened 75mm, which makes the pump not only more compact, but also makes the shaft much stiffer and eventually benefits the life time of the mechanical seal. Because field tests confirmed the durability of a single seal, the new generation of pumps will not be equipped with an oil bath around the shaft seal anymore.

xpansion in 2017 In the wake of its successful 2016 show, DJAZAGRO continues to expand with the opening of a new hall for its 15th anniversary.

An industry reference trade show for a fast-developing market According to a 2013 report by the World Bank, the African agri-food market was worth 310 billion dollars and could grow to 1,000 billion dollars by 2030.

Today, Africa imports half of all the rice it eats, amounting to 3.5 billion dollars per year. Consequently, by investing in the agri-food industry, African countries will gain access to regional and world markets, increase the availability of food within their own borders and increase their exports.

The African market holds incredible potential, with a population of approximately 170 million and annual average growth of 8%s since 1999.

Furthermore, according to International Monetary Fund statistics, annual per capita income has risen from $310 to $1725 in the past fifteen years. The objective of many African countries is to develop their local production to increase their

self-sufficiency in staple foods, such is the case in Algeria with its National Farming and Rural Development Plan (PNDAR). As a result, requirements for agricultural and food processing equipment are also increasing. This growth is reflected at DJAZAGRO through the 26% increase between 2015 and 2016 in exhibitor numbers in the Processing, Packing and Canning sector.

With the strong growth of the African middle class, professionallymade bread, which was previously seen as a luxury good, is fast gaining market appeal, which explains the increasing space occupied by the Bakery and Pastry sector at the show.

Concomitantly with this new African middle class, eating habits are also changing on the continent. Africa is starting to see “standardised” food offerings, with the arrival of fast food brands, to give but one example. “Urban” Africans who work all day long are changing their dietary patterns and eating meals away outside the home (pizzerias, bars, sandwich bars, etc.), generating substantial growth in the catering sector.

She succeeds Christophe Painvin, under whose impetus these shows expanded from 2011 to 2016.

Olivia started out in the trade show sales and marketing division of the COMEXPOSIUM group, where she has spent the vast majority of her career.

From 2004 to 2010, she specialised in the management of food industry events, up until 2010 supervising the exhibitions Boulangerie, Euro-

pain, IPA and DJAZAGRO, where which she had her first experience as exhibition director.

In 2010 she moved to work in the management of the SIAL Group, a network of 9 trade shows dedicated to the food industry all over the world.

Building on this experience she contributed to the creation of two of these global shows: SIAL Brazil and SIAL Abu Dhabi. From January 2013, Olivia Milan dedicated her energies to the exhibitions of COMEXPOSIUMâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S Real Estate division: 5 shows in Paris, Lyon and Toulouse. In a marketing campaign with Internet leader Google, it has the red rectangular wrappers of “have-a-break” KitKat printed with QR codes that lead straight to the manufacturer’s own “YouTube my Break” channel. This is where users are entertained in a variety of ways – and thus cleverly hooked by the product. What makes the campaign different is that the striking KitKat logo with its strong brand identity has been removed from its central position on the wrapper for this special edition and replaced by YouTube. In addition, Google’s Android operating system, in the wake of Cupcake, Donut, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean, was given a brand name in the shape of KitKat for the first time in history. It is an open secret in the industry

Auch im Bereich der Knabberartikel gibt es nach Angaben des BDSI ein immer differenzierteres Angebot und eine große geschmackliche Auswahl – sei es an Nüssen, an frittierten oder auch an gebackenen salzigen Snacks. „Bei dieser großen Vielfalt findet jeder Verbraucher das für ihn passende Produkt“, sagt Erbrath. „Die Verpackung ebnet den Weg in den Einkaufswagen.“ Verpackungsdesigner stehen damit vor einer schwierigen Aufgabe: Sie müssen das Naschwerk mit pfiffigen Slogans nach Möglichkeit multi-

medial bekannt machen und im Regal mit auffälligen Farben und Formen ins Szene setzen.

Allerdings gilt es, beim Ringen um Präsenz nicht zu übertreiben. Denn übermäßiger Einsatz von Material und damit Ressourcen kommen beim Verbraucher nicht gut an. „Die Kunden legen immer mehr Wert darauf, ihren ökologischen Fußabdruck möglichst klein zu halten. Außerdem haben sie einen starken Wunsch nach gesunden, ultra-frischen Lebensmitteln, die gleichzeitig extrem convenient und ästhetisch verpackt sein sollen“, sagt Andreas Steinle vom Zukunftsinstitut, einer Denkfabrik für Trend- und Zukunftsforschung. Doch nicht nur aus ökologischen, sondern auch aus Kostengründen sollte die Industrie auf allzu ausladende und aufwendig produ-

uct for every consumer,” says Erbrath.

“The package paves the way into the shopping trolley.” Package designers are therefore faced with a difficult task.

They have to publicise the snack with memorable slogans across all possible media and showcase it on the shelves with attention-grabbing colours and shapes.

However, when jostling for position, it is best not to overdo it. Because making excessive use of materials and hence resources does not go down well with the consumer. “Customers are attaching growing importance to keeping their ecological footprint as small as possible. And they also have a strong desire for healthy, ultra-fresh foods that also come in high-convenience and attractive packages,” says Andreas Steinle of the Zukunftsinstitut (Future Institute), a think tank for trend and future research. But industry should do without overly flamboyant and elaborately produced packages for economic reasons

as well as ecological ones. The cost not only of raw materials such as milk, cocoa and sugar, but also of energy and packaging materials is steadily rising.

To lastingly attract consumers who want sustainably produced goods and prevent the cost of materials and production from spiralling out of control, industry has no alternative but to econ-

omise on materials and above all avoid excessively extravagant packages while also reducing energy input in production. The fact that material downsizing is possible is illustrated by studies by pacproject, an international firm of consultants. As an example, it has taken a close look at the historic Corny muesli bar wrappers and discovered that the

Um Verbraucher, die sich nachhaltig produzierte Waren wünschen, weiter an sich zu binden, und Material- und Fertigungskosten nicht ausufern zu lassen, hat die Industrie keine Alternative: Sie muss Material sparen und vor allem allzu ausladende Verpackungen vermeiden und zudem energiesparender produzieren. Dass das sogenannte Material-Down-Sizing möglich ist, zeigen Untersuchungen des internationalen Beratungsunternehmens pacproject. Es hat beispielhaft die historischen Verpackungen der bekannten Corny-Müsliriegel unter die Lupe genommen und festgestellt, dass die Barriere-Aluminiumfolie der Verpackung des Produkts in den vergangenen 30 Jahren stetig reduziert und schließlich durch einen neuen Barriere-Verbund substituiert wurde

– ohne negative Auswirkungen auf das Produkt. „Auch ohne den vollen Barriereschutz befand sich der CornyRiegel am Ende des Mindesthaltbarkeitsdatums qualitativ im sehr guten Bereich. Dies hat die Frage aufgeworfen, ob nicht auch die aktuellen Folien mehr Schutz und Barrieren bieten, als der Cerealien-Riegel eigentlich benötigt“, sagt pacproject-Verpackungsingenieur Alexander Witt.

Alternativen zu klassischen Verpackungsmaterialien wie Aluminium und Kunststoff gewinnen auf dem Markt bereits zunehmend an Bedeutung.

Die Firma Bionatic etwa hat unter dem Namen Greenbox ein erstes Sortiment von rund 250 verschiedenen Verpackungslösungen aus erneuerbaren oder recycelten Rohstoffen wie Holz, Cellulose, Biokunststoff und Palmblatt entwickelt. Viele dieser Lösungen seien biologisch abbaubar oder umweltfreundlich in der Verbrennung, sagt Bionatic-Gründer Robert Czichos. Und die Produktion sei simpel: „Aus einem

Danach folgt das Finishing, indem die Kanten geschliffen und die Flächen poliert werden. Und das ist dann auch schon alles.“ Unterdessen suchen Wissenschaftler nach weiteren alternativen Materialien. So arbeitet das FraunhoferInstitut für Verfahrenstechnik und Verpackung (IVV) im Rahmen des Projekts ThermoWhey an einem Herstellverfahren für Barrierebeschichtungen aus Molkeprotein, das die herkömmliche ölhaltigen Polymerbeschichtungen ersetzt. Der Vorteil von Molke: Ihre Inhaltsstoffe können die Haltbarkeit von Lebensmitteln natürlich verlängern. Allerdings ist Molke hitzeempfindlich, sodass die Forscher erst eine Beschichtungsformulierung finden müssen, die sich auch bei ho-

product’s aluminium barrier film wrapper has been steadily reduced in the last 30 years and finally replaced by a new composite barrier material – without detriment to the product. “Even without full barrier protection, the Corny bar was still in a very good qualitative condition at the end of its sell-by date.

And this raised the question whether the cereal bar actually needs the level of protection and barrier effect provid-

ed by current films,” says pacproject packaging engineer Alexander Witt.

Alternatives to classical packaging materials like aluminium and plastics are already making increasing inroads into the marketplace. Under its Greenbox label, Bionatic, for example, has developed its first range of some 250 different packaging solutions using renewable or recycled resources such as wood, cellulose, bioplastics and

palm leaf. Many of these solutions are biodegradable or can be incinerated pollution-free, says Bionatic founder Robert Czichos. And their production is straightforward: “A single leaf is converted into package by first cleaning it with a high-pressure water jet. And then it is moulded on exposure to heat in a mechanical press. So it’s a kind of deep-drawing process. This is followed by finishing in which the edges are smoothed and the surfaces polished.

And that is pretty well it.”

Meanwhile scientists are searching for further alternative materials. In the context of its ThermoWhey project, the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging (IVV) is working on a production process for barrier coatings made of whey protein capable of replacing conventional oil-based polymer coatings. The advantage of whey is that its ingredients are naturally capable of extending the shelf life of foods. However, whey is heat-sensitive,

2700 Aussteller werden erwartet, davon haben rund 1000 die Süßwarenbranche als Zielgruppe für ihre Produkte und Dienstleistungen angegeben – entsprechend umfangreich wird das Angebot sein. Auch die Maschinenbauer werden in Düsseldorf mit zahlreichen Innovationen aufwarten. „Ein verantwortungsbewusster Umgang mit natürlichen Ressourcen und umweltschonendes Wirtschaften hat bei Herstellern von Nahrungsmittelmaschinen und Verpackungsmaschinen einen hohen Stellenwert. Sie wissen, dass nachhaltige Produktionsprozesse bei ihren Kunden großgeschrieben werden“, sagt Vera Fritsche, Referentin im VDMA Fachverband Nahrungsmittelmaschinen und Verpackungsmaschinen. Noch böten sich in der Süßwarenproduktion zahlreiche Optimierungsmöglichkeiten.

Intelligente Steuerungs- und Automatisierungstechnik, sparsame Antriebe, Kompressoren, Lüfter oder Pumpen zählten zu den klassischen Lösungen, um Strom und Betriebsmittel einzusparen und die Energieeffizienz zu steigern. Effiziente Motoren, optimal an die Bewegungen und Beschleunigungsvorgänge in den Maschinen angepasst, senkten den Stromverbrauch. Darüber hinaus senkten innovative und optimierte Prozesse den Verbrauch von Energie und Wasser, verlängerten innovative Maschinenkonzepte die Service- und Wartungsintervalle sowie die Betriebsdauer und sparten dadurch Energie ein, so Fritsche.

Der Schweizer Anlagenbauer Bühler zählt zu den Protagonisten effizienter Verarbeitungslösungen und hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, den Energiebedarf in allen seinen Kernprozessen bis 2020 um mindestens weitere 20 Prozent zu reduzieren. „Damit können wir sowohl die Energieeffizienz unserer Produkte erhöhen als auch gleichzeitig einen

Beitrag zum Umweltschutz leisten“, sagt Ian Roberts, Technikchef des Konzerns. Einen zentralen Aspekt sieht er dabei in der Produktivität, etwa durch Verkürzung der Zykluszeiten. Zudem verstärkt Bühler die Anstrengungen, um die Energieeffizienz in bestehenden Kundenanlagen zu verbessern. So ist die Schokoladenherstellung aufgrund der zahlreichen Prozessschritte wie das Reinigen, Rösten, Debakterisieren, Brechen und Vermahlen der Kakaobohnen sehr aufwendig und teuer. Bühler verspricht, die Energiekosten der Kakaoverarbeitung um 65 Prozent zu senken, wenn Kunden einerseits das kostenlose Energy Audit des Unternehmens nutzen und andererseits seine neue Schalenverbrennungstechnik zum Einsatz kommt. Bei dem Audit werden Energielecks im Herstellungsprozess aufgespürt. Das neue Verbrennungssystem nutzt die aus den Schalen gewonnene Energie zur Röstung und Debakterisierung anstatt die Schalen direkt zu entsorgen – dadurch muss keine Heizener-

so researchers first have to find a coating formulation that can also be processed at high temperatures.

At interpack 2017 in Düsseldorf from 4 to 10 May, many more packaging innovations for confectionery and bakery products will also be on show. 2,700 exhibitors are expected, and some 1,000 of these have named the confectionery industry as a target group for their products and services – and what they will be exhibiting will be suitably wide-ranging. Machine manufacturers will also be present in Düsseldorf with numerous innovations. “Manufacturers of food-processing and packaging machines accord high priority to handling natural resources responsibly and managing their processes with minimal environmental impact. They know how important sustainable production processes are for customers,” says Vera Fritsche, expert at the association for food processing machines and packaging machines within VDMA (Mechani-

cal Engineering Industry Association).

In confectionery production, Fritsche continues, there is still plenty of room for optimisation. Intelligent control and automation technologies and energyefficient drives, compressors, fans and pumps are some of the classical solutions for saving electricity and other resources and boosting energy-efficiency.

Efficient motors perfectly adapted to machine movements and acceleration processes reduce power consumption.

In addition, says Fritsche, innovative and optimised processes cut the consumption of energy and water, while innovative machine designs extend service and maintenance intervals and service life and thus save energy.

Swiss plant manufacturer Bühler, one of the prime movers in efficient processing solutions, has set itself the goal of reducing energy consumption in all of its core processes by at least a further 20 per cent by 2020. “This way we can both raise the energy-efficiency

of our products and also do our bit for environmental protection at the same time,” says Ian Roberts, the Group’s Chief Technology Officer. He sees a central aspect here in productivity – by shortening cycle times, for example.

Additionally, Bühler is redoubling its efforts to improve the energy efficiency of existing customer installations. Because of the numerous process steps such as cleaning, roasting, debacterising, crushing and grinding the cocoa beans, chocolate manufacture is highly complex and costly. Bühler pledges to slash energy costs in cocoa processing by 65 per cent if customers make use of the company’s free energy audit and also adopt its shell burning technology.

The audit is used for tracking down energy leaks in the production process. As an alternative to the direct disposal of the shells, the new combustion system exploits the energy obtained from the shells for roasting and debacterising, so no heating energy has to be bought

Auch Theegarten-Pactec treibt Maschinenlösungen mit hohem Einsatz voran, die Kunden bei Kostenersparnissen helfen. Dabei fokussiert sich die Firma unter anderem auf das Thema Industrie 4.0, also die Digitalisierung der Produktion und eine bessere Kommunikation zwischen Mensch und Maschine und Maschine und Maschine mithilfe neuester Software. „Produktionsprozesse transparent zu gestalten, wichtige Daten immer abrufbar zu haben, diese richtig zu analysieren und schlussendlich die richtigen Handlungsschritte abzuleiten, birgt ein großes Potenzial zur Effizienzsteigerung in sich“, sagt TheegartenChef Markus Rustler. Zu diesem Zweck habe das Unternehmen bereits 2011 begonnen, sein User Interface und die damit verbundene Aufbereitung der Daten für den Maschinen-Operator und das Management zu überarbeiten. „Somit haben wir eine Plattform geschaffen, welche die Performance

unserer Anlagen transparenter macht.

Somit können beispielsweise Effizienzverluste in Korrelation zu Zeit, Umgebungstemperatur oder anderen Parametern gesetzt werden und die Fehlersuche und Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe unterstützt werden“, so Rustler. Außerdem sei die intuitive Unterstützung der Wartungs- und Reinigungsprozesse optimiert worden, etwa, indem die Maschine selbstständig auf Serviceund Wartungsintervalle hinweise. Der Vorteil von Automation und Digitalisierung: Die kommunikationstechnisch verketteten Maschinen könnten durch wenige oder sogar nur einen Operator bedient werden. Und durch Integration des User Interface in mobile Endgeräte könnten die Maschinendaten von jedem Punkt der Welt abgerufen und bearbeitet werden, sagt Rustler.

Die Schweizer Firma Knobel Maschinenbau, Spezialist für Maschinen zur Schokoladenherstellung, hilft Herstellern auf andere Weise, Kosten zu sparen. Er bietet seine Anlagen – Eintafel-

Anlagen, Gießmaschinen und andere Geräte – im Baukastenprinzip an, sodass Kunden ihre Produktion schrittweise aufbauen und bei Bedarf punktuell in Segmenten umrüsten können.

Das ermöglicht ihnen eine hohe Flexibilität und erlaubt ihnen somit eine schnelle und effiziente Umstellung auf neue Produkte. Schnelle Umrüstzeiten würden auch dadurch ermöglicht, dass neue Maschinen mit Plug-andPlay einfach im System integriert werden könnten, heißt es bei Knobel.

Die Maschinenbauer haben sich mit zahlreichen, effizienzsteigernden Neuerungen auf die Anforderungen der Hersteller von Süß- und Backwaren eingestellt. Damit können sie nicht nur bei der Wahl der Verpackungsmaterialien, sondern auch bei der Modernisierung ihrer Linien aus dem Vollen schöpfen. in. Theegarten-Pactec is also pushing vigorously ahead with machine solutions that help customers cut their costs. The company is focusing among other things on “Industry 4.0”, i.e. the digitalisation of production and streamlined human-machine and machine-machine communication with the aid of the latest software.

“Making production processes transparent, keeping key data retrievable at all times, analysing them correctly and ultimately deciding on the appropriate course of action holds great potential for boosting efficiency,” says Markus Rustler, Theegarten’s Managing Partner.

For this purpose, the company started back in 2011 to overhaul its user interface and the associated data processing for the machine operator and management.

“We have thus created a platform that makes the performance of our systems more transparent. For example, it is possible to establish correlations between efficiency losses and time, ambient temperature or other parameters. And this helps operators to track down errors and to find their own solutions,” says Rustler. Furthermore, the intuitive support of maintenance and cleaning processes has been optimised – with active service and maintenance interval reminders from the machine itself, for example. The advantage of automation and digitalisation is that the machinery linked into complex communication systems can be operated by fewer operators, in some cases even only one.

And by integrating the user interface into mobile consumer devices, the data from the machinery can be accessed and even edited from anywhere in the world, says Rustler.

The Swiss company Knobel Maschinenbau, a specialist in machines for chocolate manufacture, helps producers to cut costs in other ways. It sells its equipment – moulding lines, stand-alone depositors and other devices – on the modular principle so that customers can extend their production step by step and, if required, re-equip their production locally segment-wise. This offers them high flexibility and thus permits rapid and efficient changeover to new products. Swift re-equipping has also been made possible by simply integrating new machines in the system on the plug-and-play principle, Knobel explains.
