ignificantly impacting agrotechnology and the food industry worldwide, Juran has been coming up with new ideas for streamlining traditional methods of farming, harvesting, and produce handling since its inception in 1966.

The pomegranate handling breakthrough A prime example, and a flagship Juran product, is the ArilSystem™, an automated system for extracting the juicy seeds from pomegranates. The pomegranate is one of nature’s most remarkably health enhancing fruits. Higher in antioxidants than wine or cranberries, it promotes heart health, reduces blood pressure, enhances healing, and has even been shown to inhibit tumor growth.

Yet consumption of this healthful and tasty fruit has been far from commensurate with its value.

This is largely due to the messy and time consuming process of extracting the arils. Consumers find the fruit less than user-friendly.

Even when the juicy seeds are provided ready extracted, consumers do not rush to buy them due to their high cost, based on the labor-intensive extraction process.

Hence the general public has failed to avail itself of the health benefits of this remarkable fruit. Juran set out to change all that.

Researching the problem, Juran developed the ArilSystem™.

a far more hygienic, higher quality product. This is reflected in its significantly increased shelf life. A further benefit is afforded the beverage industry.

Most pomegranate juices are obtained by squeezing the whole fruit, including peel and membrane, which gives the juice a bitter taste due to their high tannin and phenol content.

The ArilSystem Juicer obtains pure pomegranate juice from the arils alone, producing a far tastier beverage. And as an extra bonus, the seeds, efficiently extracted during the juicing process, are a sought-after byproduct utilized by the cosmetics and pharmaceutics industries, yielding additional revenue.

Today’s ArilSystem™ is available in 4 models handling 10, 20, 28, or up to 56 fruits per minute. A rate of 56 fruit/minute, or 1,680 kg fruit/ hour, can yield over 550 kg/hour of superior quality arils, all from a single production line.

Greener methods for redder lychees Making food processing more natural and putting healthier products on the market is a main Juran objective. Today, fresh lychees are a tricky commodity.

Starting out an attractive red, they lose their vibrant color within 2 or 3 days, becoming an unappealing brown.

To overcome this marketing drawback, lychees are subjected to a sulfur treatment that helps them maintain their color for a longer marketing window. However it offers the consumer a product that is, literally, soaked in chemicals.

“There is an attitude of resignation among lychee growers,” Avner Galili says, “that sulfur treatment is a necessary evil. Sulfur is a toxin, and it may penetrate the flesh of the fruit. Careful testing is then required to ensure compliance with allowable levels. The good news,” Avner tells us, “is that lychees needn’t be soaked in toxins to keep them market-red.”

uality control requirements for food production and food processing are constantly increasing. Modern FT-NIR spectroscopy presents the industry with many possibilities for fast and simple quality control in the laboratory and can also be used to monitor the production line directly.

The new-generation analytical instruments are easy and intuitive to use and even enable shift workers to carry out analyses alongside production.

Fast analysis is beneficial at every stage in the production chain because errors made at one specific point often impact on the final pro-

duct. With FT-NIR, manufacturers can: • analyse samples from tankers quickly, prior to unloading, and therefore reject any deliveries that do not meet specifications; • identify raw materials before use and quantify and assess their properties; • conduct on-line quality control at important production steps and prior to bottling; • check food is fit for human consumption.

The following examples demonstrate some of the possible uses of FTNIR spectroscopy technology in the food industry.

Analysis of milk and dairy products On account of seasonal and regional variation in the composition of raw milk, it is essential for all subsequent processing steps that the milk will be standardised. FT-NIR spectroscopy analyses the key parameters, fat, protein, dry matter and lactose, with accuracy comparable to that of conventional mid-infrared systems (FT-IR). Using the LSM (liquid sampling module) – a sample feed with optional homogenisation and automatic cleaning routines – samples are simply pumped into a temperature-controlled transmission-flow cell, where they are measured.

Any kind of milk, e.g. raw milk, skimmed milk or UHT milk, can be analysed, as well as other liquid dairy products including cream, condensed milk, liquid ice cream, flavoured milk products and concentrates, i.e. even viscous products that conventional milk analysis instruments struggle to measure.

Another advantage of FT-NIR spectroscopy is that one single piece of equipment can be used to measure not only liquid samples but solid and paste-like products too, including cheese, powdered milk and yogurt.

This allows for the cost-effective analysis of different quality parameters in all relevant products, ensuring quick quality control at the individual stages of production.

Quality control of frying oils Deep-fried foods, such as chips, fish products, doughnuts and crisps, have become a substantial part of our diets today. This calls for a quick and simple method for closely and continuously monitoring the degradation in quality of deep-frying oil and thereby detecting harmful byproducts that develop from oxidation and polymerisation in particular.

Various criteria are applied to determine when the oils need to be changed. For instance, the total polar materials (TPM) and polymerised triacylglycerol (PTG) levels are defined using gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Regulations in many EU countries state that a deepfrying oil should contain below 24-27 % TPM, and 16 % PTG. However, no single parameter can be considered conclusive. A variety of tests should always be consulted to measure the by-products resulting from both oxidative and thermal processes in the oil before a valid conclusion can be drawn. Using FT-NIR spectroscopy, these parameters, as well as other important readings such as acid value and Anisidine value, can be established from one single measu-

For example, it is very important for sausage manufacturers to determine the often variable fat content in their meat supplies when planning subsequent production steps.

Furthermore, the fat content is a common criterion for value-based payment to suppliers. In this respect, FT-NIR spectroscopy represents a valuable tool for assessing the raw materials going into the product. The parameters of fat, protein and water can be determined simultaneously using just one measurement. The results can be used as a basis for decisions about production procedures.

In sausage production, there is a legal requirement to define the maximum water content, minimum pro-

tein content and total fat content.

The salt level is also of particular interest to the manufacturer and consumers as well. FT-NIR has proven itself to be an efficient method of analysis for measuring levels of moisture, fat, protein and salt in the different sausage varieties. Additionally, water activity (aw-value) can be analysed to optimise the product’s shelf life.

Online measurements are suitable for solid and liquid samples alike. There are different contact and non-contact sensors available which can be implemented into pipes, bypasses

he systems of the MODULAR series are built on the basis of a ‘open frame’ stainless steel structure. The various labelling modules of the LABELX® series are then integrated on this structure for application of the labelling on the upper and lower side of the trays containing the products. screen electronic control. All operating speeds are electronically synchronized and all adjustments have numerical indicators to facilitate format changes. The MODULAR systems can be integrated with different product transport systems for different size, weight and product container shape requirements. All transportation systems have a ‘balcony’ arrangement to allow easy cleaning of the area below the machine itself and to prevent any leakage of liquids or the product itself from reaching parts of the machine difficult to clean and sanitize. The MODULAR systems shown on the page have been developed and produced for two specific applications, one for the ice-cream sector and the second for probiotic products. In the first case, the system is designed for the application of a labels on an ice-cream container lids with a sealing fold of the two lateral flaps and is composed of two parallel transport systems each with

a station for independent application that can manage incoming products from two packaging lines that work with containers of various shapes and sizes. INNOVATION IN LEAK DETECTION MINIMISES FOOD WASTE Ishida Europe is launching a revolutionary new leak detector to help food manufacturers minimise spoilage in pre-packed retail products.

esigned for use with a wide variety of foods including fresh, cooked and cured meat, poultry, seafood, fruit, salads, vegetables, cheese and ready meals, the Ishida AirScan uses advanced laser technology to identify leaks of CO2 from holes as small as 0.5mm in sealed modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) packs at speeds of up to 180 packs per minute. By maintaining the optimum gas fill for each pack, the leak detector provides consistent product quality, and allows production problems to be identified and rectified quickly. It

also reduces the amount of packaging that has to be scrapped, while the non-destructive testing process ensures that product can be re-packed. arry Callebaut, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of cocoa and chocolate products, required a packaging system at its Eddystone, PA facility that ensured safe transport of the cocoa powder filled in paper bags and stacked on pallets.

The packaging of the bag stacks must combine low packaging costs with sufficient weather protection and high stack stability during transport and storage especially when the paper bags are stacked on pallets of two different sizes.

Barry Callebaut engaged BEUMER to develop an end-of-line packaging system for these specific requirements.

Barry Callebaut AG with headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland is a fully integrated company that masters nearly all steps from the sourcing of cocoa beans right up to the finished products sold on store shelves. As supplier of industrial and specialty chocolates, the company serves industrial and artisanal customers. The American subsidiary in Eddystone fills bags with cocoa powder, pal-

letises and packages them. The bags are then loaded into containers or trucks and transported to distributors such as chocolatiers, pastry chefs or bakeries in North America or Europe.

High requirements for the packaging system To ensure that the cocoa powder arrives to customers in perfect condition, it must be transported in a safe and protected manner. For this reason, the packaging system must work at a high performance level. The goals for Barry Callebaut were to increase automation and thus process reliability, improve the product presentation and use less packaging material. In addition, the packaging had to be able to protect the cocoa powder against high temperature and air humidity. As both the Euro pallet (800 mm x 1,200 mm) and the GMA pallet (Grocery Manufacturers of America) (1,015 mm x 1,215 mm) are used, the packaging system must be customisable for different pallet sizes. Modernisation of the packaging line As general contractor, BEUMER Corporation in Branchburg, New Jersey (USA) installed a complete packaging system, various conveying systems as well as a bagging system. With partner Behn + Bates America, a division of Haver Filling System, Inc., BEUMER equipped the line with the Integra system, a fully automated, completely premounted bagging system for bulk materials in the food industry. This system fills bags with cocoa powder and seals them. As part of the quality control process, the BEUMER belt conveyors transport the bags to a metal detector and a checkweigher.

Here, bags containing metal or over- and underweight bags are rejected. After the palletising process, the stack press removes residual air from the bags, thus

increasing the stack stability. When designing the packaging line, the handling of different batches on different-sized pallets was one of the challenges. For this reason the high-capacity BEUMER robotpac was installed providing excellent stack quality and load stability.

Commissioning of the high-capacity packaging system The innovative BEUMER stretch hood is also part of the scope of supply. This high-capacity packaging system pulls a stretch hood over the palletised bag stack to protect the products against wind, rain and dust while providing ultimate safety during transport. The bag stack is completely packaged and transported to the take-away post. Thanks to the permanent tension force of the film in vertical and horizontal direction, the bag stack provides high stability - even if the cocoa powder settles in the bags, thus reducing the bag volume. Sensors on the BEUMER stretch hood measure the height of the pallet. This automation allows for the calculation of different stacking heights as well as the optimisation of film consumption. The film is then cut and sealed. The formed hood is pulled over the complete bag stack forming a stable unit.

More safety and less film consumption Since the modernisation, the workflow at Barry Callebaut’s packaging facility runs without any problems. The products are protected against wind, rain and dust. Besides the packaging capacity, the stretch hood technology provides improved visibility of the palletised products thanks to the smooth surface of the film hood. The material costs for packaging have been reduced since five to ten per cent less material is required, making this solution not only more cost effective for Barry Callebaut but an important contribution toward safeguarding the environment. www.beumergroup.com

ackaging protects the product it contains from dirt, contamination and destruction. However, there can be significant consequences when the packaging itself becomes a concern: The existence of poisonous mineral oil mixtures has been detected in various foods since the 1990s. Recycled packaging carton board was identified as the source of these mineral oil mixtures in food. Printing inks from recycled newspapers that contain solvents are the primary culprits due to the fact that poisonous hydrocarbons cannot be fully removed in the re-

cycling process. A residual amount, normally around ten percent, remains in the recycled material after processing.

The ink on the printed packaging can also contain mineral oil mixtures and can migrate into the food as well. Dry foods and foods containing fat are affected: Rice, noodles, chocolate products, muesli, potato dumplings and baby food.

The mineral oils predominantly migrate into food – even at room temperature – as volatile gases.

Most inner pouches currently used fail to offer adequate migration

protection. Safe solutions, such as those using complex laminates with aluminium and PET, are both expensive and not environmentally friendly.

The transfer of mineral oil into food is the result of two key properties of the food itself: First, the particular surface of the food onto which the mineral oil is absorbed; and secondly, the percentage of fat in the food into which mineral oils can easily be dissolved and absorbed.

These residues consist of a complex mixture of saturated (MOSH) and unsaturated hydrocarbons

(MOAH) suspected of being carcinogenic. Humans ingest the poisonous substances by consuming the food with high-risk consequences: In 2009 the Bundesinstitut für Risikobewertung (BfR; Federal Institute for Risk Assessment) determined that mineral oils can become concentrated in the human body with ingestion over time. Animal testing has shown that they are highly poisonous and can cause liver inflammation, heart damage and other diseases, including cancer. The conclusion of the BfR was that it is urgent that the transfer of mineral oils into food should be minimised.

Solutions expensive and a long way off Industry and researchers have long been looking for solutions to eliminate these unwanted risks. The entire printing sector is discussing how

The interest in an efficient and sustainable mineral oil barrier solution is very high and is growing. The increasing interest is certainly also driven by the imminent introduction of legal requirements. Many product manufacturers are now focused on this issue and are looking for rapid solutions. For this reason, the response to our official product launch during Interpack 2014 was extremely positive. There were many enquiries from product manufacturers and processors about our innovative and recyclable barrier papers, with our efficient and easy-to-implement solution enjoying a great deal of interest.

Are there any specific projects yet, and how is the ongoing development of the mineral oil barrier papers progressing?

Currently there are multiple customer tests running on different packaging types for tea, cereals, chocolate and various dry foods. We are very optimistic that we will be able to present the first successfully implemented projects very soon. The development work will not come to an end following the successful market launch of the mineral oil barrier papers, however. The next stage is to expand the number of weights on offer for these barrier papers.

What further developments is Sappi currently working on?

Sappi is increasingly investing in the development of special papers. Thanks to expansion of the specialist centre for special papers in Alfeld, we will be able to present many additional innovations in the future. The Algro Nature and Leine Nature papers that can be composted at home, as well as the mineral oil barrier papers Algro Guard M and Leine Guard M are the first innovative results of these investments. In addition to this, our company is also running various development projects in the area of sustainable packaging solutions. A key focus is the integration of different functionalities into our papers. We will be announcing additional products and solutions very soon.

to migrate to inks free of mineral oil for the long term. Carton manufacturers are working on improved cleaning processes for recycled papers; and paper processors are voluntarily avoiding the use of inks containing mineral oil for packaging printing. However, none of these solutions can have the desired impact in the short term however, and even when they are achieved, the associated costs are very high. Functional barriers, either in the form of coated, painted or laminated folding cartons or impermeable inner pouches, is a potential solution that is currently available. The use and benefit of packaging materials with mineral oil barriers (abbreviated as MOB (Mineral Oil Barrier)) are currently an important topic of discussion in the packaging sector. Although some of these measures are currently being implemented by product manufacturers, there is a need to do more, and soon: Legal requirements for this are anticipated in Germany, in particular, where a legal bill is still being discussed. However, a recommendation for the use of barriers for inner pouches in food packaging has existed in Austria since 2012.

als, Sappi has developed a solution in partnership with BASF and Eurofins that brings innovative MOB papers into the market. The Sappi paper has a barrier coating which is applied during the production process in the form of a special dispersion agent. These new paper types for flexible packaging prevent the penetration of potentially harmful substances into food while allowing the ongoing, sustainable use of recycled cellulose in packaging materials, including outer packaging and transport packaging, ensuring improved food safety.

Sappi introduced MOB papers as a technology demonstration at Fachpack last year . Shortly afterwards, these papers were awarded the “PPI Award 2013 for Advances and Innovation.” At this year’s Interpack, MOB papers were introduced onto the market under the brand names Algro Guard M for outer packaging that require high print quality, and Leine Guard M for inner pouches and bags. These save, sustainable and cost-effective solutions have been generally available since Spring 2014.

Homogeneous, sealed surface One of the technical challenges in developing the MOB papers lay in achieving a homogeneous coating

to fully cover the pre-coated paper substrate. Even small defects in the coating can have a direct effect on the quality of the barrier function.

This means it is important to have an exceptionally smooth, non-porous raw paper with a full-coverage primer offering. Another challenge was finding a production window on the coater to permit a barrier coating to be applied to product without the rollers becoming blocked.

Together Sappi and BASF succeeded in developing coating solutions to address these challenges. It required the creation of a water-based polymer dispersion that could guarantee the necessary barrier while providing a stable and fault-free film using the predefined parameters without blockages. For this purpose, the film formation had to be aligned with the blocking response to achieve the optimal formulation.

Test confirms effectiveness To test the effectiveness of the barrier coating in preventing the penetration of poisonous mineral oils into food and other sensitive products, BASF turned to Eurofins Consumer Product Testing GmbH, an international bioanalytics service provider. This lab focuses on test-

ing and analysing foods, pharmaceutical products and environmental samples as well as consumer goods. Eurofins conducted a threemonth test cycle on behalf of BASF. These and other tests have definitively shown that papers with MOB barriers developed jointly by BASF and Sappi prevent mineral oil residues in recycled cardboard and recycled carton from migrating into food during the standard shelf life of the foods in question: The two new Sappi papers, Algro Guard M and Leine Guard M, have the necessary MOB functionality for a protective period of at least 15 months - in other words, far longer than the normal maximum shelf life of the products - as well as very good sealing capabilities. It is precisely the integrated MOB functionality and the excellent sealing capability of the papers that ensure that no additional processing steps or extra coatings are needed to meet these requirements. This

results in shorter value chains and more efficient overall production times.

Before these tests were conducted, the supervisory bodies in the food industry were of the opinion that the migration of mineral oils could only be safely prevented via functional barriers such as inner pouches. According to information from Eurofins, the material from BASF was the first directly applied coating able to demonstrate appropriate barrier properties.

Thanks to the surface properties of the new MOB papers, they are also very well suited for downstream processing to enhance the packaging according to brand owner requirements. These types of enhancements are not always required, however. For example, tests have shown that the MOB papers also offer excellent aroma protection. This is demonstrated, for example, by protection against

the loss of camphors (peppermint) and limonene in foods packaged using these papers. At the same time, the barrier paper also protects against environmental odours that could impair flavour penetrating the packaged food from the outside.

Conclusion: on the right path Both of these new Sappi paper types feature two key properties: Guaranteed mineral oil barrier protection for 15 months and excellent heat sealing capabilities. The market interest in this packaging solution is immense.

This confirms for Sappi that its approach in developing a packaging solution with mineral oil barrier was the correct one: The many benefits of paper and carton as packaging materials - renewable, environmentally friendly, recyclable, compostable and biodegradable - now include providing a mineral oil barrier for improved food safety.

0XMS is a new nine-layer high barrier lidding film with a thickness of only 25 μm, which the North Italian packaging specialist Comar has developed for MA-packaging of food, including fresh and processed meat, fish or cheese. Use of a DuPont™ Appeel® sealing resin assists reliable, consistent adhesion to common PP, PE, PS or PET trays. Because the new coextrusion blown film has low thickness and is ready for use without any lamination steps, it contributes significantly to reducing the packaging’s environmental footprint.

And with its high strength, toughness and barrier properties, it helps to prevent food wastage due to premature deterioration. What’s more, its high gloss and transparency as well as its anti-fog property boost shelf appeal.

Compared to traditional five layer PEEVOH-PE lidding films with a thickness of 70 μm, the new 20XMS film has similar to improved mechanical properties, the same UV and moisture barrier and an even higher oxygen barrier. Using PET-G for the outer layer significantly enhances the new film’s high gloss, transparency and

puncture resistance. And when required, this polymer layer also permits energy and cost saving lamination of the structure to PET, OPP or OPA without any need for corona pretreatment. Specifically formulated DuPont™ Bynel® 22E780 and Bynel® 41E710 tie layers provide high quality coupling between the PET-G outer layer and the PE inner layer as well as between PE and the PA/EVOH barrier layers of the structure.

To provide consistent sealing quality on common tray polymers, Comar has specified a versatile DuPont™ Appeel® 20D784 sealant resin, which additionally permits control of seal characteristics (lock seal or easy-peel) depending on the selected converting parameters including sealing temperature, time and pressure.

PACKO PUMPS REWRITES THE STANDARD FOR PRODUCT PUMPS TOGETHER WITH THE INDUSTRY

T

he vegetable and potato processing industry has changed profoundly. By strain refinement the potatoes that have to be pumped became much larger. The free passage in the product pumps has to follow this trend. Also the volumes that have to be pumped increased enormously and loss by damage is yet barely tolerated.

The pumps that are used in this market segment up till now score, widely considered, inadequately in that area and the demand for better performing pumps resounds more emphatically through recent years. That was also the reason for Packo Pumps to begin the re-design from zero. The result is the VPCP pump that rewrites the prevailing norm. The VPCP pump has been developed in collaboration with the industry. It has been tested extensively and proven radically incomparable. Packo Pumps challenges you.

Larger stainless steel pump casing First the needs and trends of the industry were identified and converted into design requirements. The full geometry of both the impeller and the pump casing was studied via CFD and redesigned with a view to the largest possible free passage and minimal product damage in the widest possible working area. The result of months of CFD study and several practice tests is a range of four pump types with a significantly larger pump casing but with the same mounting dimensions as the VDKM pumps (except for type 150-400). The principle remains a complete stainless steel pump, like the Packo standard dictates. Cleanability, corrosion resistance and more strict hygiene re-

quirements, after all, are gaining importance.

Vane replaces impellers A second intervention replaces the traditional channel impeller with an impeller with a single vane, which was specially developed by Packo for this pump series. The design of the vane plays a key role in the performances of the new VPCP pump. It also leaves a large free passage and is designed to keep product damaging minimal.

(flow and speed). A typical single channel impeller only shows a low product damage in a small zone around the BEP (Best Efficiency Point).

Test results prove 250% less product damage In order to evaluate and compare the product damage objectively Packo Pumps developed a test method that produces a dimensionless damage figure. The damage figures are both a quantitative (% of products being damaged by the pump) as qualitative (how serious is the damage?) weighing of the damage. The new VPCP pump scores a damage figure of 9.5. In comparison, the known VDKM pump registered a damage figure of 25.5. We can therefore state that the product damage in the new generation VPCP pumps is 2.5 times smaller than in the VDKM pumps. Also pumps with conventional 1-channel impellers were subjected to the same test. No single pump scored a damage figure below 14. We can therefore confidently say that the VPCP pump series sets a new benchmark in terms of product damage.

Sustainable construction In addition to the pump hydraulics, also the structure of the pump itself was taken in hand. The versions with larger mo-

tor capacities were shortened 75mm, which makes the pump not only more compact, but also makes the shaft much stiffer and eventually benefits the life time of the mechanical seal. Because field tests confirmed the durability of a single seal, the new generation of pumps will not be equipped with an oil bath around the shaft seal anymore.

Target market of the VPCP pump series The Packo VPCP pump range is designed for pumping potatoes, vegetables, like broccoli, cauliflower, sprouts, etc. The VPCP pump can e.g. be used in Belgian fries process lines and for the transport of vegetables to the blanching lines. n 1956 Evangelos Ioannou started his working life in the rotogravure cylinder engraving industry. In 1970 he founded in Athens a small unit for the chemical etching of rotogravure cylinders. Working alone following the latest technological developments and constantly expanding his knowledge leads to continuous improvements in the quality and consistency of the company’s products. In 1990, this continuous improvement leads to growth and expansion and the company relocates to the Industrial area of Inofyta. BIOLOGICAL SYSTEMS TO PURIFY AND REUSE URBAN AND INDUSTRIAL WASTE WATERS IN A ZERO KILOMETRE WAY

W

e ECO-SISTEMI Srl is involved in research, development, planning and realization of biological systems to purify and reuse urban and industrial waste waters in a zero kilometre way: compact solutions, particularly indicated for the treatment, the reuse and the saving of water in communities far from the big centralized depuration plants and from the sewer system.

RCBR – Rotating Cell Biofilm Reactor. RCBR devices are self-installing modules: they have very reduced dimensions and they achieve the removal of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorous by a biological pro-

cess known as “biofilm system”. In this system, plastic objects, called “biological carriers”, are in contact with waste waters to be purified: they independently develop a bacterial biofilm which is able to nourish itself by the pollutants, giving clean water back to the environment.

RCBR devices have a broad spectrum of application for any type of biodegradable waste waters; specially urban waste waters, industrial agricultural and food (for example, fruit/vegetable washing, wine, beer and fruit juice production, meatmaking, breeding farms, etc.). The RCBR devices are realized in 8 models; they are able to treat

waste waters produced by 50 up to 3.000 equivalent inhabitants (p.e).

It is possible to combine in pair the devices, by a joint invented by ECOSISTEMI: in this way, it is possible to treat a greater amount of waste waters, also for small/medium communities, up to 15.000 inhabitants (for example, 5 modules of 3.000 p.e).

How does the process work? RCBR device is a stainless steel reinforced rotating cell which slowly rotates inside a stainless steel tank. Waste waters are flowed into the tank by a pump which moves the liquid to be purified from a tank to the machine.

ements which rotate into the dirty water developing bacterial film.

If the cell partially rotates inside the water, bacterial communities remove the organic carbon and oxidize ammonium to nitrate.

If the cell totally rotates inside dirty water, the system has no oxygen and it reduces nitrates to molecular nitrogen. Otherwise, if we put together two RCBR devices, one that partially rotates into the dirty water and the other one totally immersed, we can obtain a complete remediation that removes both the organic component and the nitrogen component. ECO-SISTEMI has realized a sequence of devices which operate this process in a “nutshell”, without making any cement work, without using expensive compressors for the bacterial oxygenation. They are so simple that they do not need any specialized maintenance and they have very competitive costs.

Installation typology. The classic installation typology allows the realization of a totally plant design solution, with sedimentation and mud recovery. The RCBR device can be integrated to the green technol-

ogy known as “phytodepuration”.

Matching only one nitrifying RCBR module to a bed of phytodepuration (waterproof and planted dig with water vegetable extracts), it is possible: a) to reduce more than 1/3 the dimension of the phytodepuration bed’s dig. b) to use the phytodepurator as disinfection system of the purified water’s bacterial component to be able to collect and reuse it for the

plant and garden irrigation. c) to remove in a total way the production and the problems of biological exhausted mud management produced by the plant itself.

Biological carriers. ECO-SISTEMI uses as bacterial carriers used plastic bottle caps. It is a noble and indestructible material available on the market at very cheap prices.

Depuration efficiency. In just one week, we have the creation of the bacterial biofilm and after three weeks we can see the 99,5% removal of suspended solids; the 98,7% of the organic substance (COD); the 99,3% of ammonium; the 93% of nitrites; the 92% of nitrates and the 84% of the total phosphorous.

These results allow to obtain a very high quality of the output waters, which can reach the surface water, respecting the European current regulations. Energetic consumption. RCBR devices need for their functioning only low consumption electric engines, about 10 times lower than an active mud traditional technology which uses compressors for the bacterial flora oxigenation.

In diesem System werden Plastikobjekte, sogenannte biologische “carriers”, mit dem Abwasser in Kontakt gebracht. Diese Plastikobjekte bilden selbständig einen BakterienBiofilm, der sich von den schädlichen organischen Stoffen im Abwasser “ernährt” und damit das Wasser säubert. Die RCBR-Maschinen haben einen breiten Anwendungsbereich für jede Art von biologisch abbaubarem Abwasser: zivile-kommunale Abwässer, Industrieproduktion in den Bereichen Agrar-Nahrungsmittel und Landwirtschaft-Tierhaltung (z.B. Weinproduktion, Bier, Fruchtsäfte, Fleischverarbeitung). 8 Modelle von RCBR stehen zur Auswahl: von 50 bis 3.000 Einwohnergleichwerten (EW).

Es können auch mehrere Maschinen gekoppelt werden, um größere Abwassermengen zu bearbeiten. Über die Erweiterung bis zu 15.000 EW (z.B. 5 Module zu 3.000 EW).

Wie funktioniert der Prozess? Die RCBR ist ein verstärkter rotierender “Korb” in Edelstahl, der sich langsam in einer Wanne (immer aus Edelstahl) dreht. Über eine Pumpe werden die zu klärenden Abwässer in die Wanne gepumpt. Im “Korb”, der zu 100% mit Plastikobjekten gefüllt ist, bilden die im Abwasser rotierenden biologischen “carriers” einen Bakterien-Film.

Wenn der Korb nur zum Teil im Wasser rotiert, bilden sich Bakterienkulturen, welche den organischen Kohlenstoff aus dem Abwasser entfernen und das Ammoniak zu Nitraten oxidieren.Wenn der Korb komplett im Wasser rotiert, wird dem System Sauerstoff entzogen, was zur Folge hat, dass sich die Nitrate zu molekularem Stickstoff reduzieren.

Zusammengefaßt bedeutet dies, dass wir über die Kombination von zwei RCBR-Maschinen (komplett und teilweise unter Wasser) eine vollständige Kläranlage erhalten, die sowohl die organischen Verbindungen aus

Kombiniert man ein RCBR-Modul zur Nitrifikation mit einer Pflanzenkläranlage (wasserdichter Aushub mit Wasserpflanzen bepflanzt) ist es möglich: a) Die Dimensionen der Pflanzenkläranlage um mehr als 1/3 zu reduzieren. b) die Pflanzenkläranlage als Desinfektions-System zu verwenden, um z.B. das gefilterte Wasser wiederum für die Bewässerung zu nutzen. c) die Bildung von biologischen Klärschlämmen zu vermeiden.

Die biologischen carrier. ECOSISTEMI verwendet als Bakterienträger recycelte Kunststoffkappen von Flaschen. Es ist ein hochwertiges und beständiges Material und auf dem Markt zu niedrigen Preisen verfügbar.

Reinigungsleistung. Die Bildung des bakteriellen Biofilms erfolgt in 1 Woche und nach drei Wochen werden bereits 99,5% der Schwebstoffe, 98,7% der organischen Substanz (COD), 99,3% des Stickstoffs in Form von Ammoniak, 93% des Nitritstickstoffs, 92% des Nitratstickstoffs und 84% des Gesamtphosphors abgebaut. Über diese Ergebnisse erreichen wir folglich eine sehr hohe Qualität des Ausgangs-Wassers, welches gemäß des geltenden italienischen Gesetzesdekrets 152/2006 in Oberflächengewässer weitergeleitet werden kann.

Geringer Energieverbrauch. Die RCBR-Maschinen benötigen für ihren Betrieb lediglich Elektromotoren mit niedrigem Verbrauch, in etwa 10 Mal weniger als traditionelle Technologien mit Belebtschlamm, welche energieintensive Kompressoren für die Sauerstoffversorgung der Bakterien brauchen.

Schubert opens new hall complex

GEARED UP FOR THE FUTURE– WITH CAPACITIES FOR FURTHER GROWTH

G

erhard Schubert GmbH opened a new factory complex at its Crailsheim location and began production. By putting this new assembly hall into operation, the company is increasing its production capacities and strengthening its position on its worldwide growth course.

After only 18 months of construction, the new hall complex covers 12,000 m² and can accommodate assembly, shipping and 40 office spaces. “Our new plant represents a significant milestone in our growth strategy,” explains Ralf Schubert. “With the new building, we will not only eliminate assembly bottlenecks, we are now able to further increase our serial production.” Schubert invested a total of 16 million euros in the new complex. In the future, along with an existing hall, the new hall will be used for final assembly of TLM machines.

Altogether, Schubert now has three halls with a total area of 32,000 m².

While building the complex, the company incorporated state-of-the-art environmentally friendly technology: air conditioning will take place via geothermal power, for which more than 75 holes were drilled to a depth of around 80 metres.

The manufacturer of high-performance packaging machines considers itself ideally equipped to gain an additional share of both growth markets and new business areas, such as the pharmaceutical industry. The company anticipates annual growth

A review of three recent trade fairs – FachPack in Nuremberg, Pack Expo in Chicago (USA) and Agropodmash in Moscow (Russia) - also indicates a very positive trend for the future.

At this year’s FachPack alone, Schubert successfully generated orders amounting to 4 million euros.

In 2014, the Group generated consolidated revenues of 228 million euros, representing a sales increase of 14 percentage points over the pre-

vious year. The positive turnover in the growing US market is expected to double within the next five years thanks to the restructuring of the sales organisation and the company’s recently opened location in Charlotte (North Carolina, USA).

osca GmbH based in Waldbrunn, Germany was awarded the Business Medal presented by the state of BadenWürttemberg on Wednesday 25 November. The evaluation process for the award takes into account the retention and creation of jobs and recognizes special achievements in the areas of innovation, research and development.

The business medal has been awarded since 1987 to individuals and companies that have made outstanding contributions to the Baden-Württemberg economy. Key criteria for the evaluation of a company’s merit include the provision of training positions or special achievements in fields such as resource-oriented management and knowledge transfer.

FLAT TUBULAR HEATERS BOOST EFFICIENCY FOR FRYER TECHNOLOGY

F

rom fryers to griddles to ovens, heat is an important component in most foodservice applications.

When it comes to the heat source for frying, not all heating elements are created equal.

Electric fryer heaters can be segmented into two broad categories - round tubular heaters, and flat tubular heaters. When first introduced, fryer heaters were round tubular.

But engineers found that a flat tubular design offered many benefits - the most important being that the shape lifts the oil into the cook zone

far better than round heaters. An innovation was born.

Flat Surface Geometry Because of its design and geometry, flat tubular heaters will heat viscous fluids from ambient temperature faster than round tubular elements with the same wattage and at a lower sheath temperature.

The benefit of this shape is the enhanced flow of liquid past the surface of the heating element. The round tubular has a much more erratic flow pattern (see graphic). Note the currents swirl around and trap

heat next to the sheath. This is due to the tubular’s round shape, which causes a wider and less efficient flow of liquid around the heater surface.

The flow pattern around the flat tubular heater is streamlined; the flat surface has less restriction on the liquid as it moves up and past the heater sides.

This efficient and faster flow pattern permits the liquid to move heat away from the sheath very quickly, resulting in the flat tubular heater’s lower operating sheath temperature (see graphic).

faster than the round heater. The end result – the flat tubular gets the heated liquid into the work zone faster than when using a round tubular.

The flat tubular heater has about a 50 percent greater surface area than a round tubular. This surface area design improvement is the key to lowering watt density for the same length heater or reducing the heater size while maintaining the same watt density.

Flat tubular heaters are ideal for fryer applications because their shape lifts the oil into the work zone better than round heaters.

Greater Buoyancy Force This natural convection phenomenon partially depends on the ratio of a buoyancy force to the viscous force of the fluid being heated. The buoyancy force or the flow of liquid up and across the heater surface is mainly determined by the length of the heater sides.

The side of a flat tubular heater is typically 1 in. (25 mm), compared to the 0.43 in. (10.9 mm) or less dimension of a round tubular element. The flat tubular heater’s smaller edge and longer side creates a buoyancy force up to ten times greater than a round tubular heater depending on the material being heated.

Faster Heat Up Flat surface technology provides faster heat up and recovery times than round tubular heaters. Their unique shape minimizes coking and oil degradation, and enhances the flow of the oil past the element’s surface, helping to pull heat away from the heater sheath. Compacted magnesium oxide (MgO) insulation transfers heat away from resistance wire to sheath material and media more efficiently, shortening heat-up time.

In addition, the heater lasts longer because it runs at a significantly lower sheath temperature than an equal watt density round tubular.

This also prolongs the life of the oil which shortens and reduces costs from frequent changing.

Smaller Dimension Normal to Flow This feature refers to the width dimension of the heater that the liquid flows around. Typically, a narrower dimension will give a smoother and faster liquid flow. For example, the round tubular’s wide dimension, nearly a half-inch, inhibits the flow of liquid. It causes currents which disrupt the flow and the flow rate is somewhat slower.

If coking is a problem, it is an indication that the sheath temperature is too hot and is burning the oil. A flat tubular heater will provide a lower sheath temperature than a round tubular element, without reducing wattage or watt density. Coking is also reduced by the wiping action that occurs as the heated liquid flows past the heaters surface. The result is less liquid degradation and longer liquid life.

The flat tubular heater, on the other hand, has a much thinner dimension 0.235 in. (5.97 mm), which reduces the drag forces on the liquid flowing past the heater. This allows the liquid to move past the flat heater

“Prototype Element Performance Test,” revealed that the FIREBAR flat heating element was the first to consistently return the oil to the 171°C (340°F) reload temperature. FIREBAR also maintained the highest average cook zone temperature of the heating elements tested, recorded the fastest pre-heat time and offered one of the lowest pre-heat energy consumption levels ever tested.

During the performance comparison test of the FIREBAR heater versus an equivalent kW round tubular heater, per ASTMs test method F1361-7, the FIREBAR heater’s fast recovery allowed cooking of six heavy loads of french fries versus five heavy loads of an equivalent tubular or a 20 percent capacity improvement (see below).

Reduced Watt Density Flat tubular heaters can be operated at a higher watt density than

a round tubular heating element without increasing the sheath temperature.

Flat tubular heaters also allow more wattage into the application at the same watt density with a shorter heating element. Both types of heaters can have the same wattage, but the flat tubular will operate at a lower sheath temperature than the round tubular.

In tests conducted to demonstrate this phenomenon, both heater types had a watt density of 30 and were immersed in a light liquid shortening. The flat tubular element heated the oil faster from ambient temperature than the round tubular. At 149°C (300°F), the flat tubular element heated the oil to temperature in 11 minutes where as the round tubular took 18 minutes. Plus, the flat tubular heater’s average sheath temperature was 10°C (50°F) lower than the round tubular.

Customizable, Easy to Install FIREBAR can be wired 3-phase, making installation easier and cheaper while reducing the size of the heating assembly. FIREBAR heating elements can be formed into virtually any shape for an immersion application.

This flat tubular heater can be configured with a variety of wattage and voltage ratings, terminations, sheath materials and mounting options to satisfy the most demanding foodservice applications.

The FIREBAR is typically constructed with epoxy or silicone seals to combat moisture contamination from environmental kitchen conditions.

IGUS SPLITS SLEWING RING BEARING

Installation of lubrication-free PRTs now have the ability to be fitted to an already installed shaft

I

n most applications radial-axial plain bearings are fixed on a surface completely assembled, polymer slewing ring bearings (PRT) from igus are no exception.

Responding to a customer’s request, igus has now developed an iglidur PRT Slewing ring bearing that can be split, which will easily implement the special design of the customer.

This instance proves that many of the new products developed by the motion plastics specialist igus are geared to meet specific customer requirements.

During assembly, bearings are normally positioned on a shaft and fixed It is not however readily possible with centre or support bearings, because the shaft is already fixed on both sides. It became necessary for a customer of the motion plastics

specialist igus, to execute a slewing ring bearing that able to be split, so that the bearing could be mounted in place with ease. The known iglidur PRTs from igus are slewing ring bearings that have a lubrication-free liner between the inner and outer rings made of aluminium, which minimises friction between the two rings.

A ‘split’ PRT originated from the customer’s request. “In this new development, the iglidur PRT has been constructed in such a way that it can be placed, for example, around a pipe or a shaft and then closed again in its ring shape,” explains Gerhard Baus, authorised representative for plain bearings at igus.

“The movement between the inner and outer ring can then be carried out in the usual manner.”

Versatile tribo-tape enables the special design Unlike the usual iglidur PRTs in the igus range, the sliding elements could not be used for these special solutions, since they would not have remained in their positions while splitting the housing. In this case the lubricant-free tribo-tape made from iglidur A160 is used instead. The self-adhesive film is 0.5 millimetres thick and can be easily cut. Like the sliding elements made of iglidur J, the tribo-tape is also self-lubricating, making it maintenance-free and also FDA compliant. igus supplies the new ‘split’ polymer slewing ring bearing on request. n occasion of the forthcoming sps ipc drives, mini motor has completed its series of miniaction and dbs drives miniaction 300 miniaction 300, designed as the only drive that operates both series of AC Brushless servomotors and series of threephase asynchronous motors, has been extended with 3 new models for more specific and inexpensive use. Series 400 and 500 are for three-phase asynchronous motors up to 0,75 kW only, while series 200 is inverter/ drive up to 2,3 Nm, like topof-the-range miniaction 300, but with only 4 inputs and one digital output.

The heart of the power section is, for the whole range, a smart IGBT module (IPM) that integrates all necessary protection as to make the product utterly reliable and efficient, and to al-

low less external equipment. Control is by 32 bit microcontrollers supplied with instruction set, optimized for speed and therefore specialized in precision motor control. W

ith recorded sales of 10,000 pneumatic glue pumps, Timmer ranks among the world market leaders in this sector. The company focuses on the beverage and packaging industries. Being water-tight to IP66, the new generation of pumps can be jet-cleaned with water without a problem. The compressed air for the drive is now controlled by means of an electronic oscillating valve. This guarantees an improved level of process reliability. And thanks to the existing interfaces, the electronics allow the pump to be optimally integrated into existing control systems.

The sensing and setting facilities via NFC (Near Field Communication) are especially user- friendly with a smartphone and the Timmer app.

Operating data and service information are available through the app, and control parameters for the heating system can be readily adapted for the glue concerned.

The new pump generation also offers optimised dosing, especially for minimum quantity applications, allowing even mini labels to be reliably glued. All glue pumps do have, of course, the tried and proven, durable pneumatic drive.

The pumps are also still equipped with an electronic temperature control, which ensures a constant glue temperature. This can significantly reduce glue consumption. Each glue has its own optimum gluing temperature and even slight temperature fluctuations or deviations of just a

few Kelvin can result in much higher glue consumption.

A further advantage of the glue pump is the fast glue heat-up. This is achieved by a powerful 900 Watt heater integrated into the pump. This saves time when the glue bucket has to be changed or when the labelling process is started, for example. All the stated properties also apply to the new container version of the glue pump in equal measure.

Other key features of the new glue pump are extremely low air consumption, the usual high level of reliability and robustness and the stroke frequency that can be indicated in the display. IFFA 2016: TRENDS IN THE BUTCHERY TRADE Quality and variety from transparent and resource-friendly production

F

or operators in the butchery trade, IFFA – the No. 1 for the meat industry, in Frankfurt am Main – provides an opportunity to get some important new ideas for their own future in the business. Informative events relating to the butchery trade, innovations in sales products and services, quality competitions organised by the German Butchers’ Association (Deutscher Fleischerverband - DFV) and the many technical innovations on display, make a visit to IFFA 2016 an absolute must for your diary. Heinz-Werner Süss, President of the German Butchers’ Association: “A visit to IFFA is a must, for it is only here that people working in the butchery trade can keep abreast of all the ways in which the whole sector is going to develop over the next few years. Many of the trends that are presented here will most definitely gain in importance for the butchery trade in the future.”

With its 22,197 fixed sales outlets in the middle of 2015 - of which 8,916

were subsidiaries - the German butchery trade was a major supplier of meat and sausage products. The trend is towards fewer, but, in return, larger units. Statistically, across the whole of the Federal Republic of Germany - and subject to regional variations - there are today still 28 specialist butcher’s shops for every 100,000 of the population. According to information supplied by the German Butchers’ Association there remains potential growth still in mobile sales, given the progressive thinning out of locally-based provision and the ageing of the local population. At the same time, the number of mobile sales units at weekly markets is considered to have remained constant for years now at 4,000. The 1,000 sales vehicles which have fixed routes and stop at regular times, on the other hand, are seen as a growth opportunity for additional sales.

Some of these mobile shops already offer an ordering service and delivery to the door.

Quality from the region Alongside high quality and a plentiful variety of products, artisan butchers often include regionality in their mission statements, thus scoring highly with many customers who see it as taking a stand against globalisation.

The latter place considerable value on transparent economic cycles, with as few food miles covered as possible, and a commitment to the home-grown.

In their attempt to attract customers, artisan butchers take advantage of this, either by working with raw materials from the region in their production processes, or by using their skills in manufacturing products that are typical of the region. Additionally, they can also set themselves apart from other suppliers by using so-called ‘prime meat’ which comes from specific breeds and is mostly raised using extensive farming methods. Another trend in this segment is to use different cuts such as ‘flank steaks’, for instance, which are more and more in evidence.

Snacks and dishes to take away Specialist butcher’s shops are increasingly offering other, hand-produced foodstuffs and this consolidates their reputation as established suppliers of artisan foods. Salads and cheese have been part of the standard product range for some considerable time. Now you can also find vegetarian, sometimes, though more rarely, even vegan products - particularly in party catering services. At the same time, butchers also do full justice to the current popularity of so-called meat substitutes, which often enable them to achieve good profits with meat-free dishes. In terms of convenience foods, there is now a whole string of opportunities, given the changed eating habits in society - fixed mealtimes are becoming increasingly rare. On the one hand, customers want ready-made dishes, including side dishes, that they can just heat up at home. There is now, for instance, a form of expanded polystyrene packaging which keeps the heat in and which is also suitable for use in the microwave. On the other hand, many foods are now bought as snacks ‘to go’, which can be consumed standing up, on the premises, or more frequently, as people are walking along the street. When it comes to hamburgers, which are very much on trend at the moment, specialist butchers prepare their mince themselves according to their own individual recipe, unlike the fast food chains.

Power from energy pools As the preparation and storage of meat and sausage products are extremely energy intensive, butchers spend a lot of money in this sector. Alongside energyefficient electrical equipment, lighting and temperature-regulated plant, there are also issues relating to improving the way in which power is used. Alternative forms of power supply such as smallscale combined heat and power units (cogeneration units) and regenerative energies are increasingly coming to play a role. And there is ever greater use of a strategic pooling of energy resources, as, for instance, in the case of links

with other food-producers, already seen in Bavaria, or between members of the same artisans’ guild. It works on the principle that, the greater the amount purchased, the lower the price. There is a dedicated advice centre at which the German Butchers’ Association will be providing tips and assistance relating to these and similar opportunities as well as other, easily implemented ways of making savings in practice. In addition, an energy advisor from the Association will be available to answer questions in Hall 4.1 throughout IFFA. Animal well-being It is not only the very critical consumers who perceive the protection and well-being of animals to be an ever more important factor in the purchase of meat and sausage products. This is an area where artisan butchers can underline their strengths and set the right priorities; regional origins for the animals, minimal food miles and slaughter by the butchers themselves, using humane methods before and during the process. That all indicates appropriate respect for the creatures who provide a high-quality, valuable foodstuff.

Mechanisation simplifies production A glance at the development of the market in both skilled manpower and young entrants to the profession reveals a severe shortage in both areas, which can only get worse. Even today, one out of five training places remains unoccupied and there are lots of businesses with vacancies for skilled practitioners, according to information supplied by the German Butchers’ Association. In order to remedy this deficit, companies are investing in the mechanisation of the production process. Equally, modern machines are supposed to simplify working procedures and make them easier to accomplish. Not least, greater efficiency can be achieved through greater cooperation between colleagues. That involves better utilisation of capacity in the sausage factory and a larger range of high-quality artisanal products.

Practicable hygiene systems Hygiene is the alpha and omega when it comes to the manufacture of healthy food products and is also a good recommendation for any butchery business. Constant investment is required here – both at the sales stage and in the production stages, as well as for the workforce. This ranges from suitable building modifications to training of staff in current regulations and involves effective monitoring of all measures taken. The effort involved in the documentation continues to increase, which is why economical and practicable checking and verification systems are required, so as to leave butchers sufficient time to do their actual job.

IFFA 2016: the leading trade fair for meat matters IFFA is the number one port of call for the butchery trade. Some 960 suppliers will be showcasing their new products and latest trends here from 7 to 12 May 2016, covering the entire chain involved in meat processing. An important product group for the trade here can be seen in Hall 4.1. The emphasis in this hall will be on presentations of products and services relevant to the section on retail, entitled “Sales – everything for butchers’ shops”. The display area for the German Butchers’ Association’s competition also has its home here. In Hall 4.0, visitors will see trends and new products relating to ingredients, spices, additives, sausage skins and packaging materials. WIPPLER: “UPHOLDING IBA’S SUCCESS STORY”

Organised by GHM Gesellschaft für Handwerksmessen mbH, the world’s leading trade fair for bakery, confectionery and snacks will continue to take place in the southern German city until at least 2030. Even before iba 2015, the German Bakers’ Confederation already extended the contract with the Munich- based trade fair corporation. “In advance” as Peter Becker, the outgoing president of the German Baker’s Confederation, announced at the start of the trade fair.

The confederation’s new president, Michael Wippler, is also convinced that this is the right decision.

“Continuity, stability and reliability are important and proper conditions for a long-term strategy through which the success story of iba should be upheld”, says Michael Wippler. As of October, the 61-year-old will be the new president of the German Bakers’ Confederation. Even before this year’s iba, it is already clear that the decision on the location for the trade fair corporation was the right one (in the photo from left to right: Dieter Dohr,

Peter Becker and Michael Wippler).

Even with Wippler as the new president of the association and – also as of October – with Daniel Schneider as the new chief executive, there will be no “revolutionary changes” in the coming trade fair, the president stresses. “The changes will rather be more evolutionary, with even more professionalism, a more personal approach and hence more emotional.”

In the past, the GHM has proven that it is the right partner for this. That is how iba will continue being the most important premiere platform in the industry. The trade fair that determines the pace and programme in the industry around the world.

Wippler sees, for example, digitalization as one of the key trends in the coming years. “This will not spare our industry”, says the president. “The challenge is to recognize these changes at an early stage and thus spot and take advantage of the associated opportunities. o keep up with developments on the Indian food and beverage market, the range of products and services at International PackTech India and drink technology India will be joined by a third event - the newly developed FoodPex India. It will focus on the processing and packaging of solid foods of all kinds. In the future the newly created trade fair trio will map the thematic areas of packaging and related processes, beverage technology and liquid food as well as food processing and packaging under one roof.

The constellation of this unique range will enhance the attractiveness of the event even further and will set a clear signal on the Indian food and beverage market. PackTech India and drink technology India have already come to be seen as the most important platforms for these industries in India.

“The Indian market shows a clear interest in food processing and food packaging. This is why, in 2014, we and also Messe München were already presenting suitable products and solutions at the two trade fairs. It’s a logical step to enhance this range by adding a dedicated platform under the name of FoodPex, a brand which we previously launched in China,” says Bernd Jablonowski, Global Portfolio Director for Packaging and Processing at Messe Düsseldorf, the organisers of International PackTech India and of the new

India as a growth market India is a dynamic market with major potential in packaging and related processes, particularly in packaged food and beverages. Although per-capita consumption is still relatively low, figures from the market research institute Euromonitor have shown that the demand for processed and packaged food is set to rise by about 31 per cent by 2019. During the same period soft drinks sales are even expected to rise to more than twice their current level.

India is already the world’s number one in milk consumption, and its market for liquid milk products is developing very dynamically. This development is driven by social change and clear economic growth. Moreover, the resulting growth of the middle class has led to a greater demand for hygienically processed and packaged food and beverages. This is putting greater pressure on local manu-

facturers to invest in high-quality processing, packaging and bottling equipment, so that they can compete with imported products.

High level of visitor satisfaction The organisers are expecting the trade fair trio to attract around 250 exhibitors (2015: 230). The available exhibition space will be approx. 14,000 square metres. Last year’s event already saw a 37-per-cent increase in visitors, reaching an all-time high with over 10,000 visitors in all. More than 90 per cent of the relevant professionals – of whom far more than two thirds were entrepreneurs or senior management – awarded top marks to International PackTech India and drink technology India in 2014. The response was particularly positive to the broad spectrum that was on offer and also to the presence of numerous market leaders. The third edition of the two trade fairs confirmed their reputation as a business platform with specially tailored solutions for the Indian market. A similar increase in visitors’ numbers is expected for 2016.

INTERPACK 2017: EXHIBITOR REGISTRATION NOW OPEN “components” registration opens in parallel

I

nterested companies of the packaging and processing sector in the fields of food, beverages, confectionery, bakery products, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, non-food consumer goods, industrial goods and associated services can register as of now for interpack 2017.

The international flagship trade fair of the packaging sector and related processing industries will be taking place at Düsseldorf’s exhibition grounds from 4 to 10 May 2017. interpack is a platform for complete value chains, encompassing processes and machines for the packaging and processing of packaged products as well as packaging materials, packaging means and their production, and finally services to the packaging industry. What makes interpack special is its unique array of exhibits and the peerless internationality of its exhibitors and visitors. The last interpack in May 2014 attracted some 175,000 experts, 84 per cent of whom reported being involved in decision-making processes in their respective companies. The overall verdict of the surveyed visitors was excellent, with 97 per cent of them

saying they would recommend the trade fair. Of the exhibitors, 83 per cent stated that they had acquired new customers. It is possible to register for interpack 2017 online at www. interpack.com/1330.

Parallel event: “components” Following its premiere in 2014, “components for processing and packaging” for suppliers to the packaging industry is taking place with an overhauled concept in a central location at interpack. “components” is targeted at exhibiting companies that supply drive, control and sensor equipment, products for industrial image processing, handling equipment, industrial software and communication, and complete automation systems for packaging machines. Also eligible to take part are manufacturers and suppliers of machine parts, subassemblies, accessories and peripheral equipment as well as those of components and auxiliary materials for pack-

aging means. There are no longer any constraints on company stand design, unlike in 2014 when only a selection of system stands was available. Registration within the same period as for interpack is possible at www.packaging-components.com WE INNOVATE To mark the start of registration, interpack is consistently continuing its strategy, launched at the last staging of the fair, of addressing specific target groups. Under its main claim “We innovative”, the focus in communication via all channels is on stories of companies in the eight core target groups.

Films about these “innovative eight” form the centrepiece of the communication campaign. This approach can also be found in the printed check-in magazine that potential exhibitors receive at the start of registration. in fruchtbarer Boden für Europas Obstbauern, Landwirte und Brenner ist die Fruchtwelt Bodensee 2016 vom 19. bis 21. Februar 2016 in Friedrichshafen. Die siebte Auflage der Fachmesse integriert thematisch die Parallelveranstaltung „agrarwelt“ und bietet knackige Themen zur Entwicklung des globalen Obstbaus sowie der Bewirtschaftung und Anbautechnik. Experten aus renommierten europäischen Instituten beleuchten in einem fundierten Vortragsprogramm aktuelle Branchenthemen aus wissenschaftlicher und praktischer Sicht. Der Kirschessigfliege rücken bei einem Symposium mehrere Referenten aus Wissenschaft und Praxis zu Leibe.

Hochprozentig wird es beim Likörseminar der Obstbrenner. „Je enger die internationalen Märkte zusammenrücken, desto wichtiger wird der Austausch der europäischen Obstbauern und Landwirte. Wirtschaftlich: Ein Jahr Mindestlohn – Rückblick und Ausblick Zum 1. Januar 2015 trat das Mindestlohngesetz in Kraft. Seine Auswirkungen auf den Obst- und Gemüsebau sind markant. Zwei Vorträge nehmen sich diesem Thema an. Am Freitagnachmittag in Halle B4 referiert Hubert Hengge, Geschäftsführer Maschinenring Tettnang, über „Ein Jahr Mindestlohn - was hat sich verändert?“ „Gerade die landwirtschaftlichen Betriebe beschäftigen viele Saisonarbeitskräfte.

Der neu eingeführte Mindestlohn hat den Betrieben viel abverlangt und wirft noch immer viele Fragen auf“, weiß Manfred Ehrle, Kreisgeschäftsführer vom Landesbauernverband Baden-Württemberg. Feldeinsatz: Drohnen in der Landwirtschaft Der Stand der Maschinenringe Tettnang, Lindau und Linzgau greift neben den aktuellen Themen der technischen und arbeitswirtschaftlichen Zusammenarbeit dieses Jahr den Einsatz von Drohnen in der Landwirtschaft auf. „Badische Landwirte haben Drohnen bereits vereinzelt zur Schädlingsbekämpfung im Einsatz“, berichtet Hubert Hengge. In Bereichen wie Ernteschätzung, Schädlings- und Reifeerkennung, Bestandsdokumentation, Optimierung von Bewässerung und Pflanzenschutz sowie Düngung könnten künftig Drohnen von hohem Nutzen sein. „Der Einsatz von Drohnen in der Landwirtschaft ist ein Zukunftsthema“, ist Hubert Hengge überzeugt. Mit Informationen sowie dem Angebot von entsprechender Dienstleistung wird das Angebot der Maschinenringe weiter ausgebaut und ergänzt.

Bürokratisch: Absicherung des landwirtschaftlichen Betriebes Ein wichtiges Thema, das im täglichen Betrieb aber oftmals in Vergessenheit gerät, steht am Messe-Samstag auf dem Vortragsprogramm: „Wichtige Bausteine der Absicherung des landwirtschaftlichen Betriebes“. INTERVIN IS REINVENTED TO STRENGTHEN ITS POSITION AS AN INTERNATIONAL BENCHMARK IN THE WINE INDUSTRY The Alimentaria show will attract around 180 wine buyers in the first Intervin Business Meetings

I

ntervin, the wine and spirits show, will represent one of the cornerstones of the forthcoming edition of Alimentaria, to be held from 25 to 28 April in Fira de Barcelona. Aiming to consolidate its position as an international benchmark space in an industry with an ever-increasing international focus, the show will organise the maiden Intervin Business Meetings, a programme of exclusive buyers with around 180 key industry representatives from all five continents, bringing together more than 700 industry companies to participate and close trade agreements at the exhibition.

In recent editions, exhibitors have established and consolidated their presence in overseas markets, with internationalisation a core part of the wine industry’s growth strategy given that Spain exports nearly 50% of its total production. In order to meet these needs, Intervin has strengthened its partnerships with institutions such as the Spanish Food and Drink Industry Federation (FIAB in its Spanish acronym) to attract interna-

tional buyers, set up meetings with agents with decision-making power and, ultimately, to prepare the most ambitious international visitors plan to date, with the Intervin Business Meetings the main focal point.

This programme of meetings aims to identify the key operators inside the strategic markets for the show’s exhibitors. Therefore, in line with industry trends, the Intervin Business Meetings will attract representatives from the main industry companies in Europe, Canada, Mexico, the USA, Colombia, South Korea, China, Japan and countries from southern Asia, among others.

Xavier Pagès, Intervin’s new chairman and managing director of the Codorniu Group, stresses how “the show is a high-quality vehicle for reaching international markets. Every buyer visiting the show arrives with the idea of discovering what the Spanish wine market has to offer, which means it’s a chance to keep on creating contacts and generating opportunities and sales with all of them. “

The latest trends overseen by the grand masters In addition to its commitment to internationalisation, the organisers are putting together an updated programme of activities for Vinorum, which strives to become a key space for unveiling industry trends and for witnessing the potential of Spanish wine in markets in Spain and internationally. As a result, a plan has been drawn up that is geared towards the whole spectrum of industry professionals, from wine producers and winemaking companies to importers, journalists and oenologists.

Vinorum will include the participation of eminent wine and sparkling wine critics, Masters of Wine and the most influential panel of judges in the world via a programme featuring master tastings, round-table discussions as well as showcooking and matching sessions, bringing together Spain’s top chefs and their sommeliers to demonstrate the close bond between wine and gastronomy. Thus, Intervin will focus on

gastronomy as the main channel of expression for wine, and as its main promotional ally.

By way of these talks, Intervin will highlight the main innovations occurring in the industry, trend-setting Spanish wine and the development of flagship products in the different guarantees of origin, as well as the secrets to entering key markets such as the Asian market.

Spanish regional representation Once again, the participation of Spain’s regional communities, presenting their most emblematic products, will be highly relevant at Intervin. Visitors will have the chance to see and taste standout wines and recent innovations from Extremadura, Castilla y León, Catalunya, Galicia, La Rioja and Navarra, among other regions.

Wine and sprits will also play a prominent role in the second edition of The Alimentaria Experience due to the inclusion of Wine and Culinary Tourism, enabling participants to display products and focus on their role as a tourist attraction. The “Cocktails & Spirits” space will feature demonstrations from bartenders, cocktail tastings, exhibition flair, workshops and talks to provide spirits with greater visibility and to con-

tribute to disseminating the culture of distilled drinks. With five months to go before Intervin is held, exhibiting companies have already booked over 11.000 m2, 75% of the target set by the organisers for the 2016 edition.

40 years of Alimentaria Alimentaria will celebrate its 40th anniversary between 25 and 28 April at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue. The International Food and Drink Exhibition is gearing up for its most up-to-date edition – a streamlined trade fair concept looking to expand its exhibition range and strengthen its strategic position in gastronomy, hospitality and hotels and catering in order to represent a broad spectrum

from the industry and to reflect new market trends and consumer habits.

In 2016, Alimentaria will be divided into five shows, joining the main food and drink markets: Intervin (wine and spirits), Intercarn (meat and meat products), Restaurama (hospitality), Interlact (dairy products) and Multiple Foods (multi-products in sweets, preserves, oil and Premium products).

The exhibition will round off four decades as a consolidated benchmark space for food in Europe. In its last edition, it brought together more than 140,000 visitors from around the world and 3,800 representative companies, including the participation of over 1,000 international companies.

ashhad International Exhibition Center has opened its doors for the 16th edition of iFood from 26 to 29 August 2015. Exhibitors from Iran, Afghanistan, Austria, Germany, India, and Spain showed a full variety of food products, as well as national and international food processing technology. 12,010 visitors came to see the event, among them 3,500 business professionals. iFood 2015 attracted international visitors and exhibitors thanks to IFWexpo Heidelberg, organizer of the international pavilions and DLG- German Agricultural Association, the organizer of the featuring cheese and milk production three-day conference, which took place during the exhibition. The DLG conference was supported by the companies ALPMA, GEA, Herbertz, Multivac, SIG Combibloc Obeikan, Wellmann and Stephan Machinery. Nineteen honorable representatives from Iran, Afghanistan, Germany, Iraq and Tadjikistan participated in the opening ceremony on 26 August. Amongst them were: H.E. Mrs. Delava Mirava, Commercial Attaché, Embassy of Tadjikistan, Mr. Ferdows Kamelov, Head of Sughd Chamber of Commerce (Tadjikistan), Mr. Ansari Managing Director of Exporters Union of Herat (Afghanistan), Mrs. Raziye Alirezaei, Head of Industry Mines and Trade Organization of Khorasan Region, Mr. Nameni, Manager of the Food Processing Department of Jihad-Agriculture Organization. The organisers were delighted to welcome 12,010 visitors from nineteen provinces of Iran, as well as from Afghanistan,

Iraq, Turkmenistan, Tadjikistan and Pakistan. Ms Simone Schiller from DLG - German Agricultural Association says “iFood is an ideal forum for Iranian and Afghan international producers and traders of the food and food processing industry to establish and maintain business contacts. During the three days of our DLG Conference that took place alongside with iFood 2015, the speakers had the possibility to talk to

189 professional attendees of the local food processing industry. The demand of foreign technology is very high, and we are planning to organize the next conference during iFood 2016.”

The next edition of iFood will take place end of August 2016 in Mashhad, Iran.
