SONIA V. MAFFIZZONI Editorial Manager From flour and proteins to spices and micro-ingredients, powders are playing an increasingly strategic role in food processing. Behind these apparently simple materials lie major challenges: flowability, dosing, mixing, containment, hygiene and traceability. The growing variety of formulations and the variability of raw materials are driving demand for more precise, automated and flexible systems, able to adapt without compromising quality, safety or production continuity. In this scenario, sensors, process control and data management are becoming essential tools. In the age of smart manufacturing, powder handling is therefore emerging as a key area for innovation, efficiency and competitiveness.

THE FINE STUFF: POWDER HANDLING “ MASTERING MOVES TO THE CENTRE OF FOOD PROCESSING
Powders are among the most complex materials to manage in food processing. Their behaviour directly affects dosing, conveying, hygiene and safety, making process control essential for consistent and efficient production. by the editorial staff
F
lour, sugar, milk powder, starch, cocoa, spices, protein isolates and vitamin premixes: a large share of the ingredients that enter a food plant arrive as powders or granules. Their behaviour is often underestimated. A material that pours freely on a dry morning can bridge in a hopper, cake in a silo or segregate in a mixer when humidity rises. For food manufacturers, mastering powders affects efficiency, product consistency, safety and hygiene at the same time. From flow to formulation The first challenge is flow. Particle size, shape, moisture and fat content all influence how a powder moves through hoppers, feeders and conveyors. Poor flow interrupts production, makes dosing inaccurate and wastes material. Measuring properties such as bulk density, flowability and moisture before designing or modifying a line helps avoid costly surprises. Many equipment suppliers now offer test centres where manufacturers can trial their own ingredients. Accurate dosing is the next critical point. Recipes for infant formula, sports nutrition or bakery mixes may combine major ingredients with micro-ingredients added in fractions of a percent. Gravimetric loss-in-weight feeders, micro-dosing systems and well-designed mixers help ensure that every batch meets specifications while preventing the unnecessary overuse of expensive ingredients. Process flexibility is becoming equally important. Food manufacturers increasingly need to manage multiple recipes, shorter production runs and frequent product changeovers on the same line. Dosing and handling systems therefore need to combine precision with rapid adjustment, allowing operators to switch between ingre-

latest news dients while limiting residues, product losses and downtime. Agglomeration and instantising processes can also improve solubility and reduce dust in finished products such as beverage powders, creating products that are easier to handle both during production and for the final consumer. Gentle, contained conveying Moving powders between storage, processing and packaging means balancing speed against product protection. Pneumatic conveying, in dense or dilute phase, keeps material inside closed pipes. Mechanical solutions such as screw, tubular chain or bucket conveyors suit particular products and layouts. Fragile agglomerates, coated particles and blends at risk of segregation need gentle handling. Excessive mechanical stress can alter particle structure or separate components with different densities, affecting the uniformity of the final formulation. Closed transfer also limits cross-contact, a major concern for plants that process allergens such as milk, soy, gluten or nuts on shared equipment. Correctly designed transfer
points, connections and filtration systems can therefore contribute not only to efficiency, but also to greater control over the entire production environment. Hygiene without water Cleaning is a particular challenge in dry processing. Water can create favourable conditions for microorganisms in low-moisture foods. Many powder lines therefore rely on dry cleaning with vacuum systems, brushes and compressed air, and use wet cleaning only at specific moments, followed by thorough drying. Hygienic design matters here: smooth surfaces, few ledges, easy-to-dismantle components and quick-release connections reduce residue build-up and shorten changeovers. Accessibility is equally important. Equipment that can be inspected and cleaned quickly helps operators verify critical areas and reduces the risk that residual material remains hidden inside the process. For manufacturers dealing with frequent recipe changes, cleaning efficiency has a direct impact on productivity. Shorter and more reliable cleaning procedures mean faster changeovers, lower labour requirements and more production time available.

The hidden risk of dust Fine organic dust is also combustible. Sugar, flour, starch and milk powder can form explosive clouds when dispersed in air at sufficient concentration and exposed to an ignition source. The 2008 explosion at the Imperial Sugar refinery in Georgia, United States, which killed 14 workers, remains a stark reminder of the consequences. In Europe, the ATEX directives regulate equipment and workplaces in potentially explosive atmospheres. In the United States, NFPA standards such as NFPA 61 and NFPA 652 guide dust hazard analysis. Explosion venting, suppression and isolation systems, together with dust extraction and good housekeeping, are now standard elements of plant design. Dust control also improves everyday working conditions. Efficient extraction at loading, discharging and transfer points can reduce airborne particles, keep production areas cleaner and limit the accumulation of material on equipment and structural surfaces. Data and automation Digitalisation adds a further layer. Inline sensors monitor moisture, particle size and silo levels, while connected weighing systems and control software record every dosing step. This improves batch traceability and helps operators spot deviations early, from a blocked feeder to a drifting recipe.
The growing availability of process data also supports a more proactive approach to maintenance. Changes in pressure, flow rate, motor load or vibration can reveal emerging problems before they result in unexpected downtime. When this information is integrated into plant control systems, operators can respond more quickly and make better-informed decisions. Automation also makes it easier to reproduce recipes consistently across different batches and production shifts. In applications involving numerous ingredients and frequent formulation changes, recipe management software can reduce manual intervention and improve control over every addition. A small particle, a big process challenge Powders may look simple, but they are among the most demanding materials in food processing. Plants that understand how their powders behave, and design their lines around that behaviour, gain in quality, safety and productivity. The next step is increasingly about integration: combining mechanical design, process knowledge, hygienic engineering, automation and data management into a single system. The more accurately a plant can understand and control its powders, the more efficiently it can transform variable raw materials into consistent finished products.

FOOD PROCESSING ENTERS “ SMARTER POWDERS: THE SMART FACTORY ERA
“
Powder handling is becoming increasingly strategic in food processing. The challenge is no longer just automation, but making processes more intelligent, flexible and responsive to variability. by the editorial staff
I
n food processing, the handling of powders and dry ingredients is a key factor in ensuring product quality, safety and production efficiency. Flours, spices, blends, milk powder and micro-ingredients can behave differently depending on humidity, particle size, temperature and fat content. The new frontier is therefore not simply to automate the process, but to make it capable of recognising and managing these variations in real time. Raw material variability Food powders are far from static materials. Flowability, the tendency to form lumps, bulk density and dust generation can all affect dosing, conveying and mixing, with a direct impact on process continuity and final product quality. For this reason, even highly automated plants need to become increasingly flexible. Conveying and dosing systems must be able to handle different products while ensuring accuracy, repeatability and ease of cleaning. From process control to data management Advanced sensors and measuring systems now make it possible to continuously collect information on flow rates, levels, pressure, temperature, vibrations and other process parameters. The availability of this data is opening up new opportunities. Advanced software and AI-based tools can support diagnostics, detect anomalies, anticipate maintenance needs and help optimise operating conditions. The real evolution therefore lies not simply in collecting more data, but in turning it into useful information that allows operators to act before a variation results in waste, downtime or loss of efficiency. Safety, hygiene and containment When handling powders, automation also means greater control over the production environment. Reducing dust dispersion and contamination, limiting direct ope-

latest news rator contact with raw materials, and correctly designing extraction and containment systems are becoming increasingly important. This is combined with the need to manage risks associated with potentially explosive atmospheres, making process safety, hygienic design and automation increasingly interconnected. Efficiency as a driver of sustainability Sustainability also depends on greater process accuracy. Optimising material flows, reducing over-dosing and waste, preventing unexpected downtime and improving cleaning efficiency all contribute to lower consumption of raw materials, water and energy.
The direction is clear: in powder processing, the machine of the future will not simply be more automated. It will increasingly be able to understand what it is processing, interpret what is happening within the process and adapt accordingly.

lutions to its customers, with the support of its selected partners. Efficiency and Effectiveness are the key-words.
In 2000 the company becomes a family-owned company, and with the ownership also the company view changed, in order to become more and more customer oriented.
IN-HOUSE ENGINEERING One of the most powerful strength of the company is its ability to design and produce in-house standardized and customized products, in order to satisfy each possible customer’s need.
Recently the company has enlarged its target markets abroad, by suppling goods and establishing business relationships in many European countries. For the coming years its main goal is to continue to supply high quality so-

The company studies each production process of its customers, in order to provide them with the best solution, not only in terms of productivity, but also in terms of efficiency and effectiveness. This allows GVF Impianti to
be able to project the entire systems’ functioning and management logic. The engineering department uses the most up-to-date design and 3D simulation systems. Engineers interact with the mechanical production department, and follow all the production phases up to the assembling, the start-up and the commissioning of the machine in customer’s premises. PED COMPLIANT PRODUCTS In order to improve the production quality and to control all the production processes internally, GVF Impianti Srl has decided to request and obtain the WPS (Welding Procedure Standard) certification. The company is now able to produce PED compliant vessels for its pneumatic conveyors, certified by TÜV (CE0948).

Indeed, the management strongly believes that the in-house production of products is part of the company’s strength, because it allows products customization and quality controls for the entire production system.
BO and GA-A. GA type is suitable for the transport of normal wearing materials, is designed with an inlet butterfly valve and is supplied complete of electro-pneumatical panel in box.
GVF Impianti Srl can supply on request also pneumatic conveyors for high temperatures and high performance pneumatic conveyors HP type, for long distances and big hourly capacities.
SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT GVF Impianti is also able to provide a complete service of in-house industrial automation, for its machineries and its complete turn-key plants, thanks to an internal software development department, which follows and studies all projects in order to provide the best solutions.
GC type has been developed to convey particularly abrasive material, thanks to the special inlet cone valve designed by GVF Impianti, which guarantees a high resistance to wear.
Finally, all GVF Impianti’s pneumatic conveyors offer the following advantages: automatic execution, low wear, reduced product breakages and un-mixing, low air consumption, efficient product/air ratio, low operational and maintenance costs.
The software development department takes care of the software project and the mechanical automation project. It also follows the creation and assembly of control, power and monitoring panels. Moreover, in order to offer the best possible solution in terms of industrial automation, our company has established some important partnerships with major global powerhouses such as Siemens. This resulted in a fundamental quality guarantee and improvement. DENSE PHASE PNEUMATIC CONVEYING SYSTEMS The dense phase pneumatic conveying system transports the product at low speed, using a small amount of air and reducing the energy consumption.
The conveyor is supplied complete of its electro-pneumatical panel in box too. GA COMBO type has the same features of GA type but it is studied to be compact, economical and modular, really useful if the available space is reduced. Its distinctive mark is the electro-pneumatical panel installed on board the vessel. Finally, the GA-A type is suitable if it is necessary to weigh the product before the transport. Indeed, it is equipped with load cells and with a load control unit, which allows to create batches of product just before the transport. But, what distinguishes all these pneumatic conveyors from the competitors is the special design of some components and the unique air distribution system. Indeed, all GVF Impianti’s pneumatic conveyors are equipped with outlets made in cast iron, and further strengthen by a thermal treatment.
GVF Impianti’s technology prevents contamination between the transported materials thanks to a process control that executes cleaning cycles every product’s change.
In addition, the outlet unit is equipped with spilt flanges made in cast iron too, which allow to have an easy directing of the outlet pipe.
DISTINCTIVE MARKS OF GVF PNEUMATIC CONVEYORS GVF Impianti Srl has developed during the years mainly four types of pneumatic conveyors, which satisfy different needs: GA, GC, GA COM-
Very important in terms of performance is also the exclusive uniform air distribution system, which distributes the compressed air in three main parts of the vessel: in the outlet, laterally and in the central part.
PNEUMATIC CONVEYING COMPONENTS AND EQUIPMENT In the pneumatic conveying systems’ production range GVF Impianti produces also all the pneumatic conveying components (such as pipeline’s boosters, pinch valves and wearresistant bends) and diverter valves (two-ways diverter valves and multiways diverter valves). Indeed, very interesting are the twoways diverter valves which are mainly divided in 3 types: DAS, DP and Y. The two-ways diverter valves DAS type are studied to be installed on the top of the silos, in order to divert the product between more silos or to become a terminal box made in a wear-resistant material. DP type allows to divert the material from one to two ways, and is particularly suitable for abrasive products. Y type is equipped with two pinch valves, and allows to select between two ways. But, if the number of ways in which the product should be sent is higher than two, GVF Impianti has developed a very interesting multi-ways diverter valve DS type, which allows to divert the material flow up to 12 destinations. VILSA NIX-PACK: adhesive dots that repackage the six-pack How can plastic be saved, CO2 reduced and functionality maintained? VILSA-BRUNNEN - in collaboration with KHS GmbH - has found the answer: in the form of the VILSA NIX-PACK. VILSA is the first German beverage manufacturer to replace the familiar shrink wrap with adhesive dots
L
ess plastic, more future The VILSA NIX-PACK drastically reduces the use of plastic. “We want to offer our customers an environmentally friendly alternative that combines the highest quality and innovation. The decision to dispense with film is a clear commitment to more resource conservation and a cleaner future,” says Hans-Dietrich Kühl, Managing Partner at VILSA-BRUNNEN Otto Rodekohr GmbH. According to VILSA, it saves around 50 tons of plastic per year, which equates to around 2,000 kilometers of shrink film. “Compared to the greenhouse gas emissions associated with shrink film, we achieve a reduction in CO₂ emissions between 40 and 70 percent, depending on the bottle sizes. We save 62.5% of CO₂ emissions with the 1-liter NIXPACK, for example,” Kühl calculates and adds: ”Replacing shrink film is an important step in terms of immediately visible waste avoidance in retail – who’s never seen a tattered-looking disposable shelf? The introduction of the VILSA NIX-PACK is the next logical step in a series of innovations we have brought to the market in recent years.”
Consumers expect environmentally friendly packaging When companies think more sustainably, they also do so in the interest of consumers. Consumers increasingly expect environmentally conscious packaging solutions that are both functional and sustainable. The VILSA NIXPACK shows how plastic can be reduced while at the same time increasing convenience and practicality.
Packaging rethought: adhesive dots and cardboard carriers as key technology What is special about the VILSA NIXPACK? It uses no plastic film at all and relies on strong adhesive dots to hold the bottles together. These are environmentally friendly and robust, resistant

They do not need to be disposed of before the bottles are returned and, according to the company, have no impact on the recycling process. Also, a cardboard carrier made from 100% recyclable material replaces the previous plastic handle and ensures safe transportation, even in cold, hot or damp conditions. After use, it can easily be disposed of in waste paper bins. The NIX-PACK is due to be launched across the board from May.

he ALTECH labelling systems of the ALbelt series provide an excellent price/performance ratio, without any compromise concerning reliability and robustness. The ALbelt systems come in numerous configurations based on specific labelling needs and can label different types of products, such as bottles, cans, jars, tubs, boxes, and trays. The ALbelt systems are fitted with ALstep or ALritma labelling heads and can be equipped with printers to customise labels with variable data, as well as with product spacers, wrapping units for cylindrical products, adapters and bending units for corner labels. If necessary, the ALbelt systems can take on specific configurations to meet particular needs, such as top and bottom labelling or non-stop configurations. ALTECH has recently supplied a system featuring both capabilities to an important producer of cold cuts in Italy. The system is fitted with two ALritma labelling heads, which are positioned in such a way as to apply a label on the bottom of trays. The operational logic allows it to detect the end of labels on the first head and automatically activate the second one, thus making it possible to change labels without stopping the labelling process. A third labelling head on the top is set up to apply a “hook” label to hang the tray on a display rack. All functions and parameters are managed via a PLC system featuring a
7-inch colour touchscreen panel that can store and manage up to 100 labelling formats. The system can be interfaced via Ethernet, which enables remote access to monitor its health and status, e.g. for remote assistance. Moreover, the OPC-UA protocol makes the machine
compliant with Industry 4.0 requirements. ALTECH Srl is a leading Italian company specialised in the production of material coding, identification, and labelling systems. For further information: info@altech.it - www.altech.it

AND REAL RECYCLABILITY: “ MONOMATERIALS THE NEW BALANCE IN PACKAGING
“
Recyclability in food packaging is shifting from a theoretical claim to a measurable, industrial reality. In this transition, monomaterials are emerging as a key direction, forcing the sector to balance sustainability with performance and real-world applicability. by the editorial staff
I
n the debate on sustainable packaging, the term recyclability is often used very frequently, but not always with sufficient precision. For the food industry, in fact, it is not enough to declare that a material is theoretically recoverable. It is necessary to deal with real recyclability, meaning the actual possibility that a package can be collected, sorted, treated and reintroduced into a useful circuit. It is precisely in this transition from theory to application that monomaterials are
taking on a central role. Not as a magic solution, but as a serious attempt to address a structural problem of contemporary packaging. For years, many food packages have relied on multilayer structures, designed to guarantee high barrier performance, mechanical resistance, printability and stability during processing. This architecture has delivered important results from a functional point of view,
36 packaging attivo - FP 2-26.indd 3
21/04/26 09:12
latest news but has created significant difficulties at the recycling stage. When several materials are permanently bonded together, separating them in an economically sustainable way becomes complex. This is where the interest in monomaterial solutions comes from, in which the packaging is designed using a single polymer family, or at least a structure that is more easily compatible with recovery processes. The push toward monomaterials does not stem only from regulatory pressure or from brands seeking to improve their environmental profile. It also depends on the fact that the market is demanding demonstrable sustainability, less based on promises and more on technical evidence. A well-designed monomaterial package simplifies the sorting phase in recycling plants, reduces classification ambiguity and increases the chances that
the waste will actually be recovered and valorized. However, the issue does not end there. The real challenge is to achieve this result without losing the performance needed to protect the food product. The industrial issue, in fact, lies entirely in the balance between recyclability and function. Traditional multilayer structures often provide very high barriers against oxygen, moisture, light or odor migration, as well as good sealing, forming and resistance performance. Bringing these performances into a monomaterial system requires research, development and numerous technical compromises. This is why companies are working on new formulations, film orientation, compatible coatings and thickness op-

21/04/26 09:12
latest news timization. It is not enough to replace one material with another. The structure must be rethought in a way that is consistent with the entire product life cycle. Industrial processing also represents an important testing ground. New materials must run on existing lines or, at the very least, require adjustments that are sustainable in terms of cost and timing. Properties such as stiffness, coefficient of friction, sealing behavior and thermal stability directly affect productivity and packaging quality. This is why the introduction of monomaterials cannot be seen as an exclusively environmental choice. It is an industrial decision that involves purchasing, production, quality, marketing and sometimes even logistics, especially when weight, thickness or transport performance change. There is also the often underestimated issue of consumer perception. The sustainability of packaging is increasingly judged by how easily the material can be identified, separated and correctly disposed of. A package designed to be recyclable, but unclear in its communication or ambiguous in its apparent composition, risks losing part of its value. For this reason, many companies are comple-
menting material innovation with reflection on informational design and on the clarity of disposal instructions. Talking about real recyclability also means considering the system as a whole. A better package is not enough if the territory lacks adequate infrastructure or if collection and sorting chains are not able to manage it effectively. The success of monomaterials therefore also depends on the ability of material producers, converters, brand owners, consortia, waste operators and recycling plants to work in dialogue. It is a supply chain challenge, not one for a single player alone. For food packaging, monomaterials therefore represent a concrete and industrially relevant direction, but not a shortcut. They require applied research, machine testing, shelf life validation and a more mature vision of the relationship between performance and end of life. Their value lies precisely here: they force the sector to engage with a form of sustainability that is less abstract and more verifiable. In this sense, the future of packaging will depend not only on the choice of material, but on the ability to build solutions that truly work, from filling to collection, from product protection to the real possibility of recovery.

One-stop solution to tackle skill shortages C&D Corrugating & Paper offers the corrugated cardboard industry a quick and easy way to create high-quality products with fewer staff
T
he widespread shortage of skilled workers poses huge challenges for companies involved in corrugated board production. When experienced workers leave, companies lose valuable knowledge and expertise, and recruiting new personnel can prove difficult. Here, C&D Corrugating & Paper, a brand of the Crespel & Deiters Group, offers concrete support that many manufacturers have not yet appreciated. The company provides customers with a ready-to-use, highperformance adhesive solution combined with a comprehensive range of technical services. This enables manufacturers to reduce work steps and simplify internal processes, yet still produce the best quality products Conventional manufacturing processes for adhesives - from starch preparation to mixing with additives and quality control - require extensive know-how and resources that are not available in many companies. A lack of personnel in corrugated board production means staff often do not have enough time to monitor and control the complex adhesive production process in the glue kitchen itself. This can result in errors in the mixture which can cause considerable problems in the production process, including poor bonding, increased waste and additional costs. C&D Corrugating & Paper has therefore set itself the goal of supporting its customers in terms of products and services so they, in turn, can focus solely on corrugated board

production. The company therefore carries out these process steps in its own factory, thus reducing the workload for its customers. Efficiency breakthrough: readyto-use, high-performance adhesive C&D Corrugating & Paper’s high-performance adhesive is a “ready-to-use” solution that requires no additional additives and is easy to prepare. There is no complicated multi-stage process, as Definol® is simply mixed with water at room temperature, which also saves on heating costs and production time. Furthermore, thanks to integrated additives, additional chemicals such as borax or caustic soda are not required, making handling safer and easier. Single-source solution: technical support for process optimisation To enable customers to enjoy the full potential of their corrugator, C&D Corrugating & Paper’s technical service team ensures that the system is perfectly adjusted to its high-performance adhesive. Thanks to more than 30 years of experience in the industry, the service technicians have in-depth knowledge and many years of expertise in a wide variety of machine types and production requirements. Regardless of the size, age or make of the system, they can therefore provide independent advice on the measures that need to be taken in order to maximise production. Comprehensive service and advice accompany the entire production process, including guidance on appropriate machine settings, resolving machine issues and optimising the use of adhesives. The implementation phase is followed up with regular service visits and staff training. Frederick Deiters, Global Head of Division Non-Food, says: “We know the pain points of the corrugated
board industry which, in addition to paper prices and a generally weaker order situation, are currently dominated by a shortage of skilled workers and high personnel costs. Even if the investment in the adhesive only accounts for around 1-2 per cent of the total costs, the right adhesive is vital for an efficient and economical production process. The prerequisite is that the machine is set up correctly, and that’s exactly what the C&D Corrugating & Paper process engineers do with competent, all-round service. Our customers save time, costs
and resources – yet are guaranteed consistently high-quality results for reduced waste and optimised production processes.” www.crespeldeitersgroup.com

Protecting your products SINCE 1991
I
t was 1991 when Walter, Maria Grazia, and Davide started and shaped their project of manufacturing beehives and separators. Back then, the idea of offering the market that particular support for protecting products being shipped worldwide wasn’t very widespread, but it immediately received a positive response. From that moment, the three pioneers made investments and innovations to
stay one step ahead, creating a wellorganized structure with technologies and machinery and ensuring quick and customized responses to their customers. Today, L’Alveare, considered a leading company in the production
and delivery of tensioned and corrugated cardboard packaging products, relies on highly experienced collaborators, an always updated machine park, the ability to work with various sizes, and the availability of

its own means for direct deliveries. FOOD PACKAGING: EFFICIENCY AND “ SUSTAINABILITY AS NEW INDUSTRIAL DRIVERS
Packaging is no longer a final step, but a strategic element shaping efficiency, sustainability and performance in food production. by the editorial staff
I
n the food and beverage industry, packaging has moved far beyond its traditional role as a protective shell. It has become a technical, economic and strategic component of the production system, influencing line efficiency, product quality, transport optimization and environmental performance. For manufacturers, packaging is now closely tied to competitiveness, because every decision concerning materials, formats and machine integration has direct consequences on cost control, operational continuity and market positioning. One of the strongest drivers of change is the need to combine sustainability with industrial reliability. Regulations, retailer expectations and end-user awareness are pushing companies to reduce material use and improve recyclability, but packaging must still ensure barrier performance, sealing consistency and mechanical resistance. This is why the transition toward monomaterial
structures is attracting so much attention. Compared with more complex multilayer combinations, these solutions simplify recycling and can reduce the environmental burden of post-consumer packaging, while recent advances in polymer engineering are helping preserve the technical properties required by food products. At the same time, lightweighting is becoming a major engineering priority. Thinner films, redesigned containers and optimized secondary packaging can generate meaningful savings in raw materials, energy use and logistics costs. However, reducing weight is not simply a matter of removing material. Packaging must withstand filling, handling, transport and shelf exposure without compromising product integrity. For this reason, manufacturers are increasingly working with suppliers to redesign the entire pack architecture rather than making isolated adjustments.

latest news Production flexibility is another central issue. Food plants are dealing with shorter runs, a greater number of references and more frequent format changes. In such conditions, packaging lines must support fast changeovers, stable performance and minimal downtime. Modular machines, digital setup assistance and advanced automation all contribute to this objective. The ability to move efficiently from one pack size or format to another is particularly valuable in markets where personalization, promotional variants and retail-specific requirements are becoming more common. Packaging choices also affect the efficiency of the wider supply chain. A primary pack may perform well on the line but create inefficiencies during warehousing or transport if it is not designed with logistics in mind. This is why many producers are reviewing the relationship between primary, secondary and tertiary packaging. Better stackability, improved pallet stability and reduced empty space can produce measurable savings and lower the environmental impact of distribution. In this perspective, packaging is no longer evaluated only at the machine level, but across the full product journey. Digitalization is accelerating this transformation. Sensors, vision systems and connected controls allow manufacturers to collect detailed data on sealing quality, material consumption, reject rates and machine behavior. This information supports predictive maintenance and process optimization, helping plants reduce waste and improve overall equipment effectiveness. In more advanced settings, packaging lines are becoming part of integrated smart factory architectures where data
from filling, labeling, case packing and palletizing can be analyzed together. All these developments show that packaging is no longer a downstream concern. It is a core industrial lever, where engineering, sustainability and productivity converge. For food manufacturers, investing in advanced packaging solutions means strengthening process reliability, responding to regulatory and commercial pressure, and building a more resilient production model in a market that demands both efficiency and responsibility. Another decisive factor is the interaction between packaging materials and machine technology. Even a highly sustainable structure can become problematic if it behaves inconsistently during unwinding, forming or sealing. This is why industrial validation is becoming more rigorous. Trials under real production conditions, simulation of distribution stress and shelf-life verification are increasingly necessary before a new solution is adopted at scale. The most effective projects are those in which packaging producers, machine builders and food companies collaborate from the earliest development stages. The same applies to secondary and tertiary packaging automation. Case packers, wrap-around systems and palletizing cells are no longer isolated islands, but parts of a coordinated process that must guarantee speed, repeatability and gentle product handling. In sectors such as beverages, dairy or chilled foods, even small inefficiencies multiply rapidly across large volumes. The packaging system therefore becomes a performance architecture, not a set of disconnected components.

mong these, climate targets are particularly ambitious and need to be met in a very short time. The challenge is considerable, but the industry is determined to turn this necessity into an opportunity to innovate and improve. In recent years, awareness of the environmental impact of packaging has grown exponentially. Consumers
are increasingly attentive to sustainable choices, and companies must respond to these new needs with innovative solutions. The European Union, for example, has established that by 2030 all packaging must be reusable or recyclable in an economically sustainable way. This directive has pushed many companies to review their production processes and invest in research and development.

latest news One of the most promising approaches is the use of biodegradable and compostable materials. These materials, derived from renewable sources, can naturally degrade without leaving harmful residues in the environment. However, their large-scale production still presents several challenges, including high costs and the need for adequate infrastructure for composting management. Despite this, many companies are successfully experimenting with new materials, demonstrating that a transition to more eco-friendly packaging is possible. Another crucial aspect is the reduction of plastic use. Plastic, although a versatile and convenient material, is
one of the main contributors to environmental pollution. Microplastics, in particular, pose a significant threat to marine ecosystems and human health. To address this issue, many companies are reducing the weight of plastic packaging and seeking more sustainable alternatives such as glass, metal, and paper. Technological innovation plays a fundamental role in this process. For example, the adoption of advanced printing technologies allows for waste reduction and improved production efficiency. Additionally, the use of smart sensors in packaging can help monitor the quality and freshness of products, thereby reducing food waste.

latest news Collaboration among various stakeholders is essential to achieve climate goals. Companies must work closely with material suppliers, governments, and non-governmental organizations to develop sustainable solutions that are economically advantageous and accepted by consumers. Circular economy initiatives, which promote the reuse and recycling of materials, provide a concrete example of how collaboration can lead to positive results.

Furthermore, consumer education and awareness are crucial. Companies need to transparently communicate their sustainability efforts and engage consumers in the process. Awareness campaigns and incentivized recycling programs can help create a culture of sustainability that goes beyond the mere act of purchasing. The packaging sector is facing a historic challenge. Climate goals are ambitious, but they also represent a unique opportunity to innovate and transform the industry. With the commitment and collaboration of all stakeholders involved, it is possible to create a future where packaging is sustainable, safe, and convenient for all. The packaging industry can not only significantly contribute to the fight against climate change but also become a model of sustainability for other industrial sectors.

AKOMAG’s complete monobloc system for gallon bottle washing and filling
I
n recent years there has been a strong growth in the market of gallon water bottles, both in Italy and worldwide. Dispensers showed a positive trend, apart from the temporary setback caused by the Covid-19, mainly involving offices, factories, warehouses and various communities. The success of gallon bottles, in particular those of reusable PET or PC bottles, obviously involves the need to guarantee the safety of water, and consequently the cleaning of containers and dispensers. Which must be ac-
curately and periodically sanitized. The water used to fill the gallon bottles, which can be natural spring water or water from other sources, must comply with the quality parameters defined in Community legislation on water intended for human consumption. Used empty gallon bottles, if still intact, can be reused. But before being inserted in a new filling cycle, they must be inspected for integrity, absence of discoloration and possible odours. After that, they must
be washed with water and specific detergents and rinsed thoroughly with special machines. Like those built by Akomag, for example, an Italian company specialized in the design and production of machines and plants for the bottling industry. still water. The washing cycle adapts to the various production needs of the end customer and is very effective. For this machine Akomag has designed and produced a special spraying and brushing device for gallon bottles that ensures total cleanliness. Through the use of special mobile nozzles furniture (penetrating and rotating), the machine washes the bottle internally at high pressure (5 bar). While the outside is brushed by means of nylon brushes. The machine can be quickly adapted to the different bottle formats by simply setting the type of container to be handled on the control keyboard. The stainless steel control board installed next to the monobloc is easily accessible for the operator. The panel is equipped with a touch-screen for the complete management of all line functions, and the displayof operating parameters and alarms. The Monobloc features an automatic de-capper in stainless steel: a pneumatic system grips the bottle neck while ejecting the cap. The system is safe, but it can be
equipped with a system for the selection and ejection of gallon bottles that have not been properly de-capped. The bottles are then filled by means of special inverter- controlled pumps. A valve designed by Akomag guarantees a laminar flow and no contact between the valve and the bottle. The filling is carried out by means of a special meteringdevice that ensures extreme filling accuracy. The
capper consists of soundproof vibrating hopper, a descent channel, and a tear-off pick-up head. The closure of the bottle is guaranteed by an inclined pressure belt characterized with adjustable pressure. All adjustments are automatic and managed from the control panel. www.akomag.com

ANGELUS: can seaming equipment manufacturer
I
n the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, the invention of the double seam – a means of folding 5 layers of material in a way that interlocks a can end with a can body – transformed Food and Beverage packaging by eliminating the need for soldered seams to achieve a hermetic seal. By 1910, Henry L. Guenther had taken this advancement to the next level by designing and patenting the first machinery to create these double seams on cans. With that invention, the Angelus Sanitary Can Machine company was founded, with a vision of creating the finest machines of their kind, anywhere in the world. Today, more than a century later, and with more than 16,000 seamers sold
in 132 countries across the globe, Henry’s vision has been realized, and the Angelus name is still recognized as the standard for excellence in seaming technology and equipment. Joined with Pneumatic Scale Corporation in 2007, the combined company of Pneumatic Scale Angelus is a global leader in the design and manufacture of packaging machinery for liquid and dry filling, capping, can seaming, and labelling applications as well as state-of-the-art container handling solutions. The company is a division of BW Packaging under the Barry-Wehmiller umbrella of companies. In recent years, the company has introduced the Angelus V-Series line, designed to meet the specific needs of
the Food and Beverage markets. The same technology used for high-speed seaming applications has also been scaled for the needs of the craft beverage space. Angelus has manufacturing facilities in Ohio in the United States, as well as its Parma, Italy location. In nearly all markets Angelus serves, concerns for sustainability and increased, pandemic-driven demand for shelf-stable products created a surge in can demand and a subsequent shortage of them. Though pressures have eased somewhat, with can makers working aggressively to increase production, it will still take time for supply to catch up with demand. In addition, the lightweighting of cans brings challenges to seaming

equipment, as lighter cans can often lead to an increased risk for can damage during production and even transportation. Seamer suppliers like Angelus are responding with innovations to seamer design and container handling. For Pneumatic Scale Angelus, consistent communication with can makers helps drive not only future product design, but also current partnerships with customers to analyze produc-
tion and mitigate potential areas for damage, not only at the seamer, but also upstream and downstream from the seaming process. Angelus currently has patents pending for several new developments in seamer design and container handling that it believes will provide superior solutions for its customers, as well as a competitive advantage for the company.
mers for Food and Non-Food cans, Thomas Thiel, Product Line Leader for Can Seaming replied, “Angelus continues serving the Food and Beverage markets with seamers specially designed to address their unique needs. We have a long history of innovation in seaming, and we are excited about our plans to continue that legacy well into the future.’’

ifty years after its debut in an Ohio supermarket, the barcode that identifies retail products is evolving into a new two-dimensional format, offering consumers with more information and enhancing efficiency for retailers. On June 26, 1974, a supermarket cashier in Troy, Ohio, made history by scanning a barcode on a ten-pack of Wrigley’s Juicy Fruit chewing gum with a Magellan Model A scanner. Developed by Spectra Physics, now part of the Italian multinational Datalogic, this was the world’s first fixed retail scanner. The ability to automatically identify products at checkout marked the beginning of a new era, revolutionizing the retail industry with unprecedented speed and accuracy. Fifty years later, this innovation remains indispensable. As a pioneer in identification technologies, Datalogic has recognized

a direct connection between a physical product and its associated digital content. The new GS1 standard QR code will enable consumers to instantly access up-to-date information about products they are considering purchasing by scanning the packaging. This includes details of ingredient origins, allergens, usage (such as cooking tips and recipe suggestions), recycling or disposal guidelines, nutritional values, and much more. The code will also include detailed information about the specific package, such as the expiration date, production lot, or a unique serial number. This data can be integrated into retailers’ point-of- sale systems, improving security, streamlining procurement processes, and minimizing the risk of fraud. Fabrizio Pareschi, Datalogic’s Global Account Manager, stated, “Consumers will be empowered to make more informed purchases by gaining insights into the environmental impact of the products they buy. They will have access to detailed information, such as the origin of a product and its ingredients, as well as guidance on how to recycle or reuse packaging. Retailers and supply chain companies can offer personalized content, promotions, or offers tailored to consumer preferences or location. In addition, the new GS1 standard enhances traceability throughout the supply chain, aiding in the fight against counterfeiting and improving product recall management. It also optimizes inventory, warehouse management, and logistics processes by integrating with enterprise ERP and CRM systems. For these processes, Datalogic is the ideal technology partner, offering solutions for point-ofsale and data management through professional mobile computers like the new Memor 30/35. It is the perfect tool for tasks such as inventory management, price control, and stock re-
plenishment. All Datalogic retail products are already fully compatible with GS1 code management”. The role of software, systems, and artificial intelligence So, how is the retail industry gearing up for the introduction of these new two-dimensional codes? Michele Benedetti, Chief Technology Officer at Datalogic, explains: “Our goal is to ensure that reading these two codes on packages is seamless and rapid, maintaining the same level of reliability we currently have with linear barcodes. Our scanners and mobile devices can read both types of code simultaneously, with the same speed and accuracy. But the real game-changer will come from integrating smart systems and software to create innovative applications that improve the shopping experience, support sustainability, and give retailers a competitive edge. For example, our next-generation Magellan scanners are truly intelligent machines capable of processing not just product codes, but also images captured by in-store and point-of-sale cameras. This paves
the way for innovative applications, such as advanced anti-theft solutions, which will make retailers more efficient and ready to tackle the challenges of a rapidly evolving market.” Here’s to the enduring legacy of the barcode and its successor, as they guide us into the next era of retail. Datalogic is poised to lead the charge. Maximising operational excellence: The role of predictive and preventive maintenance in modern industry Looking into how - with a tailored approach to maintenance, we can predict the lifetime of a system and know when preventive maintenance should happen. By Roger Savo, Aftermarket Director, Europe at ELGi
I
n today’s fast-paced industrial environment where downtime equates to significant financial losses and operational inefficiencies, implementing predictive and preventive maintenance (PPM) has become not just an option, but a necessity for companies across all sectors. This integrated strategy not only enhances the reliability and performance of equipment, but also extends its operational life ensuring both efficiency and durability in industrial operations in a manner that underscores cost-effectiveness.
What is predictive maintenance and what are its key components? Predictive maintenance is an advanced maintenance strategy that leverages data analytics, machine learning,
and sensor technologies to predict and prevent equipment failures before they occur. Unlike traditional maintenance approaches, such as reactive maintenance (fixing issues after they happen) or preventive maintenance (scheduled maintenance regardless of equipment condition), predictive maintenance focuses on data-driven insights to optimise maintenance schedules and maximise equipment uptime and reliability. Connected new technologies play a crucial role in driving the efficiency of predictive maintenance. By integrating sensors and networks with analytics and augmented intelligence tools, predictive maintenance systems can offer more accurate predictions and real-time insights.
Call-out box ELGi’s Air~Alert is an IoT-based, smart 24/7 remote machine monitoring and alert system which can be implemented on new and existing installations. The service enables customers to act in time to avoid potential failures of compressors with 24/7 remote monitoring of a compressed air system. It does this by delivering trend graphs and information about operating parameters including discharge pressure, oil temperature, variable frequency drive (VFD) speed, total running hours, trips, and alerts on a live online interface accessible remotely from anywhere in the world. Air~Alert also functions as a predictive maintenance system notifying customers and ELGi Channel Partners about scheduled maintenance, fault occurrence, and predicts commonly occurring failures. Monthly summary reports on overall health and operating parameters include upcoming planned service requirements, as well as preventative maintenance based on system data. Smart technology integrations allow for “always-on” agility, where unforeseen machinery conditions can be addressed promptly, thus mitigating potential damage and optimising decision-making processes. tivity facilitates a comprehensive data exchange, enhancing the predictive analysis and enabling more informed, strategic decisions regarding asset maintenance. Key components of Predictive and Preventative Maintenance (PPM) systems: Implementing preventive maintenance requires a strategic approach, underpinned by several key components: •A dvanced Sensor Technology: IoT sensors are crucial for real-time monitoring of equipment conditions, providing the data necessary for predictive analysis. •D ata Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (AI): The heart of PPM lies in data analytics and AI algorithms which process data collected by sensors to identify patterns, predict potential failures, and suggest preventive measures. • Skilled Workforce: A workforce skilled in data analysis, machine learning, and the operation of sophisticated monitoring equipment is essential for interpreting data and implementing maintenance strategies effectively.
•C ultural Shift: Embracing PPM requires a cultural shift within the organisation, moving from a reactive to a proactive maintenance mindset. This shift involves training, change management, and ongoing support. How Predictive Maintenance Operate: The predictive maintenance process unfolds through several stages: 1. D ata Collection: Continuous monitoring and data capture from machinery. 2. D ata Analysis: Application of statistical techniques and machine learning to analyse the collected data. 3. A nomaly Detection: Identification of data patterns that deviate from the norm, indicating potential issues. 4. P rediction and DecisionMaking: Use of predictive algorithms to forecast failures and decide on maintenance actions. 5. P roactive Maintenance: Execution of maintenance tasks before failures occur, based on predictive insights.
Benefits of implementing PPM methodology: The rationale for adopting the predictive and preventive maintenance methodology within business operations is underlined by its significant benefits for companies: 1. D owntime Minimisation: Unplanned downtime is the bane of productivity. The adoption of predictive maintenance has been linked to a significant reduction in unplanned downtime, enhancing overall productivity. Connected technologies facilitate the predictive maintenance process, allowing for real-time insights and the efficient deployment of maintenance resources. According to Deloitte Analytics Institute Position Paper on Predictive Maintenance, this efficiency translates into a 20-50% reduction in maintenance planning time, a 10-20% increase in equipment uptime, and a 5-10% reduction in overall maintenance costs. Notably, implementations of predictive maintenance in sectors such as chemical manufacturing and transportation have led to significant decreases in down-

AUTOMATION
components - industrial electronics
time and maintenance costs, with one large chemical manufacturer achieving an 80% reduction in unplanned downtime and savings of around $300,000 per asset. 2. C ost Reduction: PPM significantly lowers maintenance costs by identifying issues before they escalate into costly repairs or complete equipment replacements. By optimising maintenance schedules, companies can avoid unnecessary maintenance activities, saving on labour and parts. According to Advanced Technology Services (ATS), predictive maintenance yields cost savings between 8% to 12% over preventive maintenance and up to 40% over reactive maintenance. This insight underscores the financial benefits
of adopting predictive maintenance strategies over traditional maintenance approaches. 3. E xtended Equipment Life: Regular and precise maintenance extends the operational lifespan of machinery. According to research by McKinsey, predictive maintenance can lead to a reduction in machine downtime by 30% to 50% and increase machine life by 20% to 40%. This demonstrates the significant impact that predictive maintenance strategies can have on extending the operational lifespan of machinery, enabling companies to defer capital expenditures on new equipment and optimise the return on investment for their existing assets.
4. E nhanced Safety and Compliance. Implementing PPM strategies can significantly enhance workplace safety and ensure compliance with safety regulations. By proactively identifying and addressing potential equipment failures before they occur, PPM minimises the risks of accidents, creating a safer environment for employees. This proactive approach not only protects the workforce but also helps companies adhere to stringent safety standards, thereby avoiding legal and financial penalties associated with non-compliance. 5. Operational Efficiency: With PPM, companies benefit from an overall increase in operational efficiency. If data is collected and analysed correctly and maintenance tasks are performed just in time, equipment wear and tear is reduced, improving the performance of equipment. Conclusion The implementation of predictive and preventive maintenance is not just a best practice, it’s a strategic imperative for companies aiming to thrive in the competitive and fast-evolving landscape of Industry 4.0. By adopting PPM, businesses can achieve not only significant cost savings and efficiency gains, but also enhance their operational resilience. In an era where downtime can be a critical setback and efficiency gains are continuously sought, PPM stands as a beacon of operational excellence, ensuring companies remain agile, proactive, and ahead of potential failures. www.elgi.com

Highly functional (it is also available with a display and 360-degree status LEDs for precise and timely information), SM Foodmag by ifm detects in real time the presence of fluid, its flow rate, total volume, and direction.
Rigorous testing ensures lasting quality Through meticulous internal and external tests, SM Foodmag is guaranteed from the outset to withstand the extreme conditions typical of daily production in the food industry.
It also transmits data regarding the liquid’s conductivity and temperature to the control system and IT level. As a result, it offers the advantage of “measuring what matters” with a single device, reducing the need for additional measurement points in the system.
The thermal shock test evaluates the sensor’s accuracy under significant temperature changes, such as those occurring during pasteurization.
Integrating SM Foodmag with existing systems is extremely straightforward. Its standard M12 connector, combined with a flexible choice of seals and process adapters, ensures a quick, hygienic, and errorfree connection to the infrastructure. The app-based menu structure and optional guided installation make
In this process, milk or highly acidic products are heated to temperatures between 72 °C and 95 °C and then rapidly cooled to ensure their preservation. Even after one thousand hours of continuous stress caused by sudden temperature changes from below zero to above zero, the measurements must remain within predefined accuracy limits. To transfer fluids from tanks to subsequent processing phases, pumps
and valves are used. Pumps generate constant vibrations, while valves undergo rapid openings that cause pressure spikes. The pressure spike test replicates these surges by intentionally applying pressures that exceed the nominal values indicated in the technical documentation. After one million cycles, the Foodmag SM undergoes a strict seal test. Additionally, shocks and vibrations along the X, Y, and Z axes are intensely simulated over several days to ensure that external influences do not compromise the device’s performance. In the condensation test, cold fluid flows through the piping system and the sensor in a warm environment. The Foodmag SM is exposed to high humidity and condensation for weeks and in various installation positions, confirming that moisture does not penetrate inside the device. www.ifm.com/it

The relationship between technology manufacturers and the food industry is changing: supplying a machine is no longer enough; companies need support in making increasingly strategic production choices. How is this dialogue evolving? The relationship between technology manufacturers and the food industry is increasingly based on collaboration. Companies are not simply looking for a machine supplier, but for a partner capable of understanding their needs and supporting them throughout their innovation journey. This means designing customized solutions, offering support throughout the entire life cycle of the plants and providing expertise that can help improve efficiency, sustainability and competitiveness. Events such as Anuga FoodTec encourage precisely this kind of dialogue, creating opportunities for exchange between those who develop innovation and those who apply it every day in their production facilities. Anuga FoodTec was born in Europe, but speaks to a global market. Which markets, supply chains or technology areas are currently showing the most interesting demand for innovation? Innovation is a global priority, but we are seeing particularly strong demand in Europe, North America, the Middle East and
THOMAS ROSOLIA - KOELN MESSE SRLintervista - FP 4-26.indd 5
Asia, where companies are accelerating investments to make their plants more efficient, sustainable and digitalized. In terms of supply chains, the greatest dynamism is coming from sectors such as dairy, beverage, bakery, meat and pet food, which are investing in automation, artificial intelligence, robotics, energy efficiency and traceability. In this context, the Anuga FoodTec Brand Family also plays a strategic role. Through its international events, the brand is present in key markets such as India, Italy, Brazil and Colombia, creating a global platform that fosters the exchange of expertise, technologies and business opportunities. It is precisely this international dimension that makes Anuga FoodTec a privileged observatory, capable of connecting innovation, expertise and new markets. In a scenario in which the competitiveness of the food industry increasingly depends on the ability to integrate efficiency, sustainability, safety and digital innovation, Anuga FoodTec 2027 is therefore preparing to offer not only an overview of available technologies, but also a concrete interpretation of the transformations currently underway. www.anugafoodtec.com
