MODULAR AND COMPACT LABELLING SYSTEMS FOR FRONT AND BACK APPLICATION ONTO CYLINDRICAL PRODUCTS

T

hanks to the countless labelling solutions already developed by LABELPACK, designed for the application of one or more labels onto cylindrical products, managing the in-line printing of variable data and barcodes, the company is able to face and solve many identification and customisation issues.

One of the most requested solutions is the labelling system for front and back application onto cylindrical, oval and rectangular products, which also includes the possibility of applying a warranty label. All these applications are now possible thanks to the MODULAR and COMPACT systems. The highest technological solution is realised with the MODULAR system, an “open frame modular

structure made in stainless steel featuring several automatic labelling systems for top and bottom application. The system consists of a centralised electronic control panel placed on a balcony structure with PLC and Touch Screen operator panel. Moreover, the speed functioning can be electronically synchronized and the fast regulations with numerical indicators facilitate the format change and the following repositioning to previous position. The MODULAR automatic la-

belling systems have different conveying equipments according to the dimensions, weight and shape

of the relevant container. The conveying systems are placed on the balcony structure making them easy to clean and avoiding spillage onto remote parts of the machine that can be difficult to reach and clean. LABELX labelling units operate with a maximum label width of 140250mm and can integrate the units designed by MARKEM, VIDEOJET, SAVEMA, ALLEN, etc... for the in-line printing of variable data, barcodes and other relevant information. COMPACT labelling systems are the “entry level” series including 8 standard models and several customised solutions. They are equipped with LABELX JR labellers, which operate with a maximum label length of 350mm and maximum label height of 140/250mm. COMPACT TS, COMPACT TB and COMPACT BS are the labelling systems for top and bottom applications onto trays, cases, boxes, flow-

packs and bags. The conveying systems are available in different models (flat belt, plastic chains, stainless steel chains) and can be customised in length and width according to the dimensions of the product and the requirements of the packaging production line. All COMPACT labelling systems can be equipped with one or more thermal transfer printing units of variable data, barcodes and other relevant information. To complete the labelling system other accessories and options are available: sensors for transparent labels, product spacers and stabilisers, rotary tables for inline loading and accumulation.

F

rom Version 3.0, the speed monitor PNOZ s30 from the safety relay PNOZsigma product group has a new feature: a configurable analogue output, which makes diagnostics more user-friendly. PNOZ s 30 from Pilz safely monitors standstill, speed, speed range, direction of rotation and broken shear pin up to the highest category PL e/SIL CL 3. The ability to work safely while the safety gate is open, reduced set-up times and faster access to the machine once standstill is initiated are key benefits for the user when the PNOZ s30 is employed. PNOZ s30 is suitable for all common drive/motor feedback systems and proximity switches on the market.

Safer switching – more productive manufacturing The new analogue output forwards the safely measured speed to the PLC controller as a proportional 0-20 or 4-20 mA signal,

so that the speed can be used directly for process monitoring. The safely monitored speed can be displayed and tracked directly on operating and monitoring devices such as the Pilz PMI operator

reflector require a perfectly defined background and accurate operating distances while the reachable operating fields are reduced. This is the reason why TRU-C23 photoelectric sensor works as a high-performing system with reflector. Thanks to a patented detection principle, the sensor offers high detection performances thus being able to also identify thin and clear objects. The sensor exploits a light source in the UV light spectrum, which bundles are absorbed from the glass or clear plastic. Miniature TRU-C23 photoelectric sensor exploits UV light and is suitable to detect clear objects, reliably. It also detects thinner clear objects The sensor’s operating range can be easily set-up, since clear materials like plastic or

glass absorb most of the polarized UV light. The shape or thickness of the measured object does not affect the measuring result. Dirt, water drops or aging also do not affect the measurement. Errors linked to multiple triggers for the same object are completely eliminated. The key feature for the measurement consists of a LED that emits polarised UV light and a reflector made in special material suitable for UV light. Overall, the sensor reaches an operating field around 1.000 mm. Typical application examples consist in detecting clear films or glass or clear plastic containers for the Food and Beverage Industry, or check the presence of bottles or phials in the pharmaceutical sector. Moreover, the sensor has also a good quality/price ratio.

NEW BLOW-MOLDER EBS K ERGON: SMI SOLUTION DEVOTED TO INDUSTRY 4.0

I

nterpack 2017 is an international hotspot of technical solutions for the packaging industry and related process industries. This important event, taking place in Düsseldorf from 4 to 10 May 2017, will put the focus on Industry 4.0 to offer the opportunity to discover the latest solutions in packaging machinery and process engineering. SMI is not indifferent to new trends; since 1987 the company has been developing cutting-edge projects and technologies, in order to offer turn-key bottling lines and flexible, ergonomic, efficient packaging machines, increasingly inspired by the concepts of Industry 4.0 and Internet of Things (IoT).

At Stand 14D12 SMI will exhibit the world premiere of the new compact blowmolder EBS K ERGON in ECOBLOC® version (model ECOBLOC® ER-

GON 4-12-4 K) as well as an electronic volumetric filler. A new important step in the “new age of bottling”. Based on the technical innovations of the stretch blow-molders of the EBS ERGON series (Electronic Blowing System), SMI engineers have developed a new series of very compact rotary machines, called EBS K ERGON (“K” refers to the German word “Kompakt”), suitable for outputs up to 8.800 bottles/hour. The new models, available in 2-, 3- and 4-cavity versions, offer all advantages of the rotary technology,

with an output range traditionally controlled by linear blow-molders (from 3-4.000 to 8-9.000 bottles/ hour); thanks to the stateof-the-art solutions, the EBS K ERGON series can produce PET containers up to 3 litres with a maximum output of 2200 bottles/ hour per cavity for the 0,5-liter format. The new EBS K ERGON stands out in its market segment for a series of advangtages: • the preform heating section (tunnel) is integrated with the stretch-blow moulding section (carousel)

in a single, extremely compact module, that makes the system suitable for installation even on small bottling lines. • the structure that contains the tunnel and the carousel is equipped with slightly rounded safety doors, providing more space inside the machine to perform cleaning and maintenance tasks easily and safely. • The carousel of the stretch-blow moulder is equipped with motorized stretch rods controlled by electronic drives and do not require mechanical cams. This innovative solution ensures precise control of the stretch rod’s travel and position, as well as significant energy savings. It also makes it possible to change the stretching speed without mechanical intervention (switching cams) and greatly reduces the vibration stress on the blowing carousel compared to traditional solutions. • the stretch-blow moulding system uses highperformance, low deadvolume valves that reduce pre-blowing and blowing times, thereby improving efficiency and the quality of the bottles produced. • the mechanical assembly

The ERGON EBS K stretch-blow moulding system has an innovative preform heating module with an extremely compact design, this allows it to be integrated in the same machine module with the stretch-blow moulder carousel. The module features a horizontal preform feeder chain and an optimized ventilation and aeration system. Moreover, the infrared lamp units, responsible for heating the preforms in transit, are equipped with a system of thermo-reflective panels made of a highly energy-efficient composite material situated both in front of and behind the lamps. This technically advanced solution ensures excellent reflection of the heat generated by the IR lamps, and consequently ensures a more uniform distribution of the heat over the entire surface of the preform. to provide optimal temperature control and prevent overheating problems. The blow-moulding pressure is automatically regulated according to bottle format, offering unquestionable advantages compared to the manual adjustment solutions used on the linear stretch-blow moulders that SMI EBS K models compete with, by producing from between 3-4000 and 8-9000 bottles/hour. The new machine also comes standard, with a singlestage air recovery system. The new ERGON EBS K rotary, stretch-blow moulders have a very attractive quality/price ratio and also provide savings on installation and start-up costs, as the compactness of the system permits these operations to be performed in a single day. The new ERGON integrated systems The benefits gained from the technological innovations applied to the ERGON EBS K stretch-blow moulders, are further enhanced, when they are combined with a filling and capping module to form

an integrated ECOBLOC® ERGON K system. The SMI integration of the three main wet area operations into a single block, makes it possible to achieve optimum performance at reduced costs for the production, filling and capping of rigid containers of up to 3 litres. This solution does not require connecting conveyors between the stretch-blow moulder and the filler, and in most cases, not even a rinser (the empty bottles are blown, filled and capped on the same machine without risk of contamination from the external environment). ECOBLOC® ERGON K systems are available in various models for use on bottling lines of still water and edible oil, and have a filling technology that uses high-efficiency valves controlled by flow meters. The electronic control of

operations provided by this solution, ensures a very precise and fast process. Even the prep times for the machine wash cycle have been reduced by integrating the use of dummy bottles into the valve. The ECOBLOC® ERGON K systems, filling and capping module, is a new design featuring a modular, seamless frame, equipped with access doors made of highly resistant and durable tempered glass. The transmission system of the filling module utilizes independent axes, made possible using brushless ICOS motors equipped with an integrated driver. Additionally, the automation and control system, equipped with a very simple and intuitive human-machine interface, permits the entire block operation by a single line operator.. www.smigroup.it

The applications can be either traditional, with earth and paper filters, or innovative, with cross-flow or osmotic filtration systems. The latter provides numerous benefits. For instance, in cross-flow filtration the liquid is pushed by pressure through membrane pores: this way it is possible to increase the yield while reducing energy consumption and production costs, for instance by eliminating the need for purifiers and adjuvants.

With time, VLS Technologies developed also “exclusive solutions, satisfying particular requests of the customers.

greatly reduce the microbial load, while preserving and improving the organoleptic characteristics of the product.

Among these, one of the most interesting new products from VLS Technologies is Filtro UNICO. This filter is best suited for small to medium size producers that necessitate to carry out one-step filtrations, obtaining this way a filtered high-quality product, with a turbidity inferior to 1 NTU. Thanks to this filter it is possible to achieve a prefect filtration and to

The filtering elements can undergo multiple regenerations with detergents and hot water, which extends greatly their life. All the models are available in a semi-automatic or full-automatic mode. In the full-automatic version, the PLC manages all the filling, filtering, emptying and washing operations, while constantly monitoring all the necessary parameters without requiring the operator intervention. Thanks to the touch panel it is possible to set all the necessary parameters for the correct functioning of the machine. Another solution which raised considerable interest by our customers is

Lees-stop, cross-flow filter. This product is best suited for “difficult” productions (up to 70% of solid particles suspended) and it was awarded as innovative technology at SIMEI 2015. “Lees-Stop” is specifically realized for products rich in suspended solid particles, and substitutes the traditional polymeric membranes of crossflow filters with sintered stainless steel. Sinterization is a heat treatment for steel powder during which steel particles are welded together without reaching the melting point. Numerous tests showed how this material is ideal for

cross-flow filtrations of high turbidity liquids, yielding out-flow products with concentrations up to 95% v/v. Sinterized steel particles arrangement provides it with high mechanical and chemical resistance, resulting in a very high tolerance to high pressure, heat-shock, hits and high pHs. It is indeed a very durable solution. Furthermore Lees-Stop offers the possibility to filter a vast array of products, from sediments to in-

BOTTLING

dustrial waste-waters: outstanding results were obtained, for instance, by juices producers. Finally, when taking into account the high yields, the reduction of waste-disposal costs, the complete automation and the economic return from the process wastes, “Lees-Stop” represents the best solution for those who need to perform high efficiency filtrations at a greatly reduced cost. Beside the oenological sector, which is where VLS Technologies began to work, we address a vast range of pro-

ductions. For instance Filtro PLUMA, which was as well presents at SIMEI 2015, is specifically designed for juices producers. In this sector it is essential to greatly reduce the microbial load while preserving the organoleptic characteristics of the product. PLUMA guarantees both a high quality filtration and a microbessafe product. Just like with UNICO, PUMA’s filtering elements allow to perform multiple regenerations with hot water and detergents. One of the products that was highly appreciated ad requested is our new system for the cold stabilization of liquors and distilled beverages. Often distilled beverages such as rhum, brandy, cognac and grappa are subjected to a refrigeration well below 0°C after their dilution according to their alcohol content, in order to separate oily substances and to remove them with cold filtration. This way it is possible to

maintain the brilliance and the stability of the beverage at any temperature, during its storing and distribution. VLS Technologies system stands out for its reliability, simplicity of use and for its cost efficiency. It is reliable as our refrigeration solution is based on a vapor compression system that utilizes a dry expansion evaporator with a scraped self-cleaning surface, which is widely tested on many other applications of the food and beverage industry. It is easy to use, because, once started, the machine is able to carry on for days without any supervision, thanks to sensors and tools dedicated to the constant monitoring of the processing parameters, automatically intervening to correct any eventual variation occurring in the characteristics of product.

it requires low powers and it is provided with a generous heat recovery system. All this, is VLS Technologies. We know how to listen to our customers necessities, and we respond quickly and efficiently to any request. Our 35 years of experience in this sector guarantee a flexible and dynamic approach, and allowed us to establish long-lasting partnerships both with small and medium size brands and with large world-wide selling companies. VLS Technologies participates in all the main fairs of the sector and will be present with all its top products at Drinktec in Munich, on September 11-15 2017. www .vlstechnologies.it

A special gas injecting and mixing system - specifically developed by WS - performs a careful mixing with the water to be treated and, hence, best results in terms of product perlage; the carbon dioxide contents is maintained constant in the product receiving tank by a supervising software, which checks possible fluctuations in feeding water temperature and product buffer temperature; the effective dissolved carbon dioxide contents in the product is checked using a carbometric unit, installed in by-pass on the filling machine feeding line; syrup dosing and mixing: at first syrup is stored in a small buffer tank, whose

atmosphere is modified and enriched with carbon dioxide, in order to avoid oxidation occurrence. Syrup injection is made by a sanitary design modulating valve and a mass flow rate transmitter in a quantity which is proportional to the water amount fed from the deaeration tank; furthermore using the mass flow rate transmitter, it is possible to check constantly the effective density of the inlet syrup and therefore to compensate immediately for the dosing and to stabilize the sugary concentration in the end product within established bounds (usually ¹0,05 °Bx). A specific refractometer installed in by-pass on the filling machine feeding line, allows the constant check

of the product and, if necessary, its adjustment; similarly the instruments minimize waste of both syrup and product during transitory phases of production, such as start and stop. Furthermore, customized solutions for product cooling are available, depending on the environmental conditions of the system installation. The supervising software loaded on the mass premix unit - BLENDSYSTEM M - is conceived to guarantee the best results in terms of dosing, offering at the same time an easy control by a friendly user interface; this software enables on one hand to set the main production parameters and visualize their state graphically and on the other hand to

BOTTLING

set the statistics parameters (ca, cp e cpk) connected to that kind of production. Using a more advanced version of this software, associated with specific instruments, it is also possible to control automatically saccharose inversion, so that the need of intervention by laboratory technicians is reduced. The equipment is equipped with field buses (MPI, PROFIBUS or ETHERNET) for a complete integration in the bottling line and the control of production, cleaning and sanitizing processes. www.watersystems.it

RETURNABLE BOTTLES, NICER, STRONGER, LONGER…

or beer, soft drink and mineral water manufacturers, the appearance of glass bottles is paramount wherever the drink is served: in bars, restaurants and stores. The look of bottles impacts the brand image and its commercial performance. Products developed by Arkema, Kercoat® and Opticoat®, dedicated in the protection of glass bottles, address this issue, and help bottlers extend the lifetime of their bottle fleet, with significant savings as a result. Explanations by Julien Verron, Global Business Manager Glass Coatings for Returnable bottles at Arkema. DRINK: What does your range of coatings for glass bottles entail? Julien Verron - Arkema offers a unique expertise in the returnable glass bottle coating market with two complementary product ranges: Kercoat®, which protects the bottles and keeps them looking new for longer, and Opticoat®, which

Without Opticoat® (left) / With Opticoat® (right) after 20 cycles

masks the scuffing and white rings that build up on bottles every cycle of use. Building on our 30 years’ experience in glass coatings, we were the first to launch this innovative solution some ten years ago. We noticed that, after a number of cycles of use, returnable bottles were becoming more fragile and losing their appeal to consumers. By ensuring that bottles retain an attractive look for a longer period of time, our products contribute to maintaining a positive impact on the buying act of final consumers.

D - Your solutions bank on the look of bottles, so aren’t they marketing products? J.V - Marketing experts know very well that the look of a bottle is very important to seduce consumers. Nowadays, with the growing number of cycles for returnable bottles, scuffing caused by repeated contact between bottles, in particular during filling and transport, is unavoidable. Any deterioration in their appearance can result in a significant loss of business. Our experience has shown us that after

n the beverage industry, the automatic washing of recycled bottles has now reached a high level of specialization. In this context, works AKOMAG, company located in Soragna (PR), able to offer a varied production, which includes bottle washing machine, rinsing machine, sterilizers for glass or PET bottles, crate washer and accessories to complement. Very large is the choice of the washer, the potential of which obvi-

tive (CE), is equipped with all the accessories needed for the proper functioning: a heat exchanger built with stainless steel tubes arranged geometrically to prevent the deposit of mud or various precipitation that would compromise the performance or, alternatively, a combustion chamber built with direct burner operation. Safety guards and dust cover to protect the unloading of bottles; grouped grease; saving valve for the water network and automatic control of the presence of water in the last rinsing station; electronic speed control; electronic security on the main gearbox that

stop the machine in case of overload; spray pumps with casing and impeller made in stainless steel AISI 316 and protective filters; valves for emptying the waste paper and spray tanks; control panel adjustable, made in stainless steel; IP55 electrical plant; gauges and thermometers in visual range of the operator; setting and control of all the machine by “touch-screen. This are the main amenities that characterize the series. The GENESI machine is also arranged for the introduction of detergent and liquid additives in the bath and in the detergent tank, disinfectants and other products in the spraying

tanks. Internal spraying (made with self-cleaning rotating nozzles) and external high pressure spraying are easily removable for routine cleaning and maintenance. The loading and unloading of bottles is completely automatic, and perfectly synchronized with the movement of the main chain. Dry cycle To streamline the washing cycle , the company has realized the HYDRA series, a series of fully automatic machines which comprise a first station for emptying the bottles followed by pre-washing spraying and first pre-maceration bath. This configuration

helps to reduce the pollution of the detergent bath and reduce fuel consumption. The triple station for labels extracting ensures their complete detachment from used bottles, while the rotating filter displaced over the entire width of the machine ensures the evacuation outside.

Built according to the Machinery Directive (CE) also, the series has a different predispositions that increase safety, including: sensors for slowing down and eventually stopping the machine in case of failure or obstruction of bottles on conveyor; detergent introduction and liquid additives in the bath The bottle washing is and other products in complete with indoor and spray tanks; the automatic outdoor spraying, which loading and unloading of occurs with high-pressure the bottles is perfectly syncleaner distributed with chronized with the moverotating nozzles self-clean- ment of the main chain; ing and self-centering. tion. The electronic safety on every gearbox allows at the machine to stop in case of overload. The heat exchanger and pumps are always made in stainless steel. Very high productivity and automation in the wash meet in the HP model in the same series. Despite the sophistication, just an operator to remotely manage the entire wash cycle, verifying operation via control systems. The tubes of external washing are constructed so as to reduce maintenance to a minimum. But in case it will be necessary, the dismantling and cleaning are very simple. The regulation of the temperature in the tanks is automated through

a modulating proportional pneumatic system, which offers a guarantee of accuracy and safety of operation. The main motor, oversized, ensures a long lasting efficiency by minimizing the mechanical wear. The electronic variable frequency allows to manage the main engines installed in HYDRA HP series via remote control. The automatic press for the collection of labels evacuated from the detergent bath is full of a recovery system of the detergent solution that accumulates in the pressing phase.
