There is a strange custom in the art world whereby people celebrate an artist...

...in death. In life, they try to contain his creative exuberance and at times limit the full expression of his creative skills.

This introduction wishes to state that we felt the need to show you, who are reading these lines, the work of an artist who has made the history of Italian comics with his ink.

We like the idea of talking about his work while he is still alive so he may also have a chance to enjoy the rewards of the commitment and sacrifice demanded by this profession.

Alessandro Bocci is an artist who experiences his work deeply. My admiration for him goes beyond the professional aspect because, for me, he is a dear friend who taught me so much during the time shared at the events dedicated to comics.

In my publishing role, I believe Alessandro Bocci deserves much more attention than the comics world has paid to him so far. Certainly, this is not easy for an artist who makes of focus and silence the foundations for his creative work, given that to emerge as he would deserve, loudness and an aggressive approach would be required to just prove one’s existence.

This Artbook is a much-needed tribute to an artist who has dedicated his life to drawing, in a continuous search for technical perfection between genius and obsession, signing stories for many comics from Tex and Dampyr for Sergio Bonelli Editore to Conan the Barbarian for Marvel, as well as Lazarus Ledd and Christophe Bec’s Prométhée.

To project a spiritual image of Alessandro Bocci into your mind, try to imagine a Tuscan hill on a silent, sunny day. On top of that hill, under the shade of a cypress tree, you would find Alessandro smoking his cigar and creating his magnificent works, calling them “a mere exercise in inking.”

At a time when everything is art, and nothing is art, there is only one certainty: under that cypress tree, there is a true artist. Any work he may not get a chance to create will be a great loss for us all.

....da morto. In vita lo si cerca di contenere nelle sue esuberanze creative, limitando in alcuni casi la piena espressione delle sue capacità immaginifiche.

Tutto questo per dire che abbiamo sentito l’esigenza di mostrare a voi, che ora leggete queste righe, il lavoro di un autore che ha segnato, con le sue chine, la storia del fumetto italiano.

Ci piace l’idea di parlare dell’opera di un autore quando è ancora in vita, per dare la possibilità anche a lui di godere dei meriti acquisiti con l’impegno e il sacrificio che la professione del fumettista richiede.

Alessandro Bocci è un artista che vive profondamente il suo lavoro, la mia stima nei suoi confronti va oltre l’aspetto professionale, è per me un caro amico che mi ha insegnato tanto nel periodo in cui condividevamo il tavolo alle manifestazioni dedicate al fumetto.

Nel mio ruolo editoriale penso che Alessandro Bocci meriti molta più attenzione di quella che fino a oggi il mondo del fumetto gli ha dedicato, certo non è semplice, per un artista che fa della concentrazione e del silenzio il fondamento per creare le sue opere, adattarsi o emergere come merita in un contesto dove si richiedono urla e aggressività per dimostrare la propria esistenza.

Questo Artbook è un doveroso omaggio verso un artista che ha dedicato la sua vita al disegno, in una ricerca continua della perfezione tecnica tra genio e maniacalità, firmando storie per numerosi personaggi delle nuvole parlanti, da Tex e Dampyr per la Sergio Bonelli Editore a Conan il Barbaro per la Marvel passando per Lazarus Ledd e il Prométhée di Christophe Bec. Per darvi un’idea dell’immagine spirituale di Alessandro Bocci immaginate una collina toscana in una silenziosa giornata di sole, lì nella parte più alta, all’ombra di un piccolo cipresso, c’è lui che fumando il suo sigaro crea le sue magnifiche opere definendole “un mero esercizio d’inchiostrazione”.

In un periodo in cui tutto è arte e niente è arte rimane solo una certezza, che sotto quel cipressino c’è un vero artista e ogni opera che non avrà modo di realizzare sarà una grande perdita per tutti.

bio ALESSANDRO BOCCI, he lives and works in Monteroni d’Arbia, a town 16 km from Siena where he was born on 30/08/1965. Graduated as surveyor in 1984, he worked from 1987 to 1994 as an interior designer for clothing stores at the TECNA company.

In 1986 and 1988 he won the national humor reviews held in Siena with cartoons on the Palio.

In 1994 he joined the STAR COMICS publishing house as a designer for the character of LAZARUS LEDD. As complete stories by Lazarus Ledd, all on texts by Ade Capone, he draws: N° 16 _ “Honor and the sword”; N° 22 _ “Face to face”; N° 28 _ “Alpha energy”; N° 38 _ “The forest of mysteries”; N° 39 _ “Final clash”; N° 50 _ “Mission Impossible”.

He collaborates in the creation of numbers 89 and 151 (the last of the series). He collaborates in the realization of n° 2 Lazarus Ledd EXTRA (n° 10 and n° 12) all based on a script by Ade Capone. From n° 18 he became the cover artist of Lazarus Ledd’s magazine, making a total of 90 covers between regular and special series.

For Ade Capone’s Liberty he designs various covers relating to the series he published (Erinni - The power and the glory - kore one).

In 1997 the magazine «Fumo di China» awarded him the prize as «best young Italian designer».

In 1997 he made a story of CONAN IL BARBARO for MARVEL Italia for the “Conan il Conqueratore” series.

In June 2001, contacted by Mauro Boselli, he joined the DAMPYR staff for “SERGIO BONELLI EDITORE”.

In 2001 he won the INCA award for best cover of the year (Lazarus Ledd extra n°14 “il cavaliere di San

Giorgio”) In 2003 (with the first story for DAMPYR) he won the Cartoomix-If award as a promise of Italian comics.

In 2004 he made the comic story of the last victory of the Palio di Siena, entitled «Timeless», for the district of the porcupine (contrada dell’istrice).

In 2004 he made the cover of Max Pezzali’s latest music CD (883).

In 2004 he made 2 covers of the Italian version of MAGICAL MISTERY MOORE (ed. Star Comics) by Alan Moore.

In 2005, with the DAMPYR story «The Damned of Prague», he won the ‘Smoke of China’ award as the best realistic story of the year.

Nel 2007 (Lucca Comics) ispirato dai vampiri nemici di Dampyr esce (da lui stesso prodotto) il portfolio “I maestri della notte” (edizione esaurita).

In 2007 he was contacted by the French publishing house SOLEIL for which he created (HANTE ’series) a hardcover story entitled» Fontainebleau - The blood house. « based on a screenplay by Christophe Bec. In 2008 (Lucca Comics) his portfolio «I masters of the night II» (”I maestri della notte II”) comes out.

In 2009 (Lucca Comics) his portfolio «I masters of the night III» (”I maestri della notte III”) comes out.

In 2010 he created, for IF EDIZIONI, 6 new covers for the reissue of Lazarus Ledd.

In 2010 he was chosen by the French publishing house SOLEIL to replace the drawings, on the Prométhée series,

by Cristhophe Bec. He does the 3rd and 4th episode.

In 2010 he was contacted by the French publishing house Glenat to make a story in 2 issues dedicated to the Amazonian explorer «Percy Fawcett».

In 2014 he joined the staff of TEX (again for Sergio Bonelli Editore) for which he created 2 short stories: «The mescalero without a face» for the Color Tex n ° 10, «Maria Pilar» for the TEX Magazine n° 1.

For the regular series he drew the numbers 701 «The Vampire Queen» and 702 «The Jungle Temple».

He is currently working on two TEX stories, one (three albums) for the regular series entitled «The mystery of the mountain», the other for the next TEX Magazine entitled «Wampyr», both based on a script by Mauro Boselli.

Dal n°18 diventa copertinista della testata di Lazarus Ledd realizzando in totale 90 copertine tra serie regolare e speciali.

Per la Liberty di Ade Capone disegna varie copertine relative alle serie da lui pubblicate (Erinni - Il potere e la gloria – kore one).

Nel 1997 la rivista “Fumo di China” gli assegna il premio come “miglior giovane disegnatore italiano”.

Nel 2010 viene contattato dalla casa editrice francese Glenat per realizzare una storia in 2 numeri dedicati all’esploratore amazzonico “Percy Fawcett”.

Nel 2014 entra a fare parte dello staff di TEX (sempre per la Sergio Bonelli Editore) per il quale ha realizzato 2 storie brevi: “Il mescalero senza volto” per il Color Tex n° 10, “Maria Pilar” per il TEX Magazine n° 1.

Per la serie regolare ha disegnato i numeri 701 “La regina dei vampiri” e 702 “Il tempio nella giungla”.

Attualmente è al lavoro su due storie di TEX, una (tre albi) per la serie regolare dal titolo di lavorazione “Il mistero della montagna”, l’altra per il prossimo TEX Magazine dal titolo di lavorazione “Wampyr”, entrambe su sceneggiatura di Mauro Boselli.

L’opera di Alessandro Bocci non è sono solo da ammirare, ma da osservare meticolosamente e da studiare.

L’amore dei lettori per il suo lavoro è la risposta all’amore che mette lui quando disegna i suoi personaggi e le sue storie.

Dalle sue illustrazioni dei supereroi alle tavole francesi, tutto quello che non avete mai visto.

Questo artbook è l’omaggio a un grande artista e maestro, maestro perchè a me ha insegnato.
