Day in the life?

WHAT'S A FLOWER FARMER? Floriculture, or flower farming, is a type of horticulture concerned with the cultivation of flowering and ornamental plants for gardens and for floristry, comprising the floral industry.

I wake up early to harvest flowers. The flowers don’t last as long if they are cut when it’s hot outside! After processing (trimming the leaves and getting a count) the flowers I put them in a cooler to stay as fresh as possible! In the afternoon I check for water and water where it’s needed. I usually will deliver the flowers to the florists in the afternoon as well! In the evening I like to do a farm walk to make sure everything looks happy and healthy! This is also when I see what will need harvested the next morning as well. In the spring I do a lot of bed prep and planting. In the fall it’s a lot of cutting plants back or pulling them out of the ground. We pull all of our dahlia tubers, divide and store them for the winter!

spotlighting service Sleep in Heavenly Peace written by Kate with insights from Christanne Harrison

Across the US, many children go without pillows and beds at night -- that's where Sleep in Heavenly Peace comes in. A non-profit organization, they are dedicated to providing every kid with a bed. Going without a bed can have an impact on kids' health and happiness. SHP volunteers build, assemble, and deliver well-made bunk beds to families in need. Christanne Harrison had been serving in the community but wanted to devote time to a specific organization that she knew would make a difference. She saw a video about SHP and knew that was it! "Watching the kids when they see their new beds for the first time and climb onto them. Many of them have never had their own bed before. Every time I leave a home with those happy kids in their beds, my heart feels good," she says.

Replacing a grain base for a meal (think pasta, bread, rice, etc.) with a veggie is such an awesome way to incorporate more vegetables in your dayto-day. Here are my faves + how I use them:

spaghetti squash When cooked right (I like to undercook it a bit -- no mush for me!), spaghetti squash is the pasta veggie king :). A yummy dish like pasta, but a plant!

cauliflower rice Cauliflower rice is a perfect substitute for rice! Cooked in the microwave or on the stove, it can easily blend with any spice + camouflage into any dish.

sweet potato Trust me when I say you need sweet potatoes in your life. So versatile, yummy, and packed with goodness. Meal prep a bunch at once, or cook one for a meal in the microwave.

Jim fondly remembers hanging out with his brother and sisters in the back of the store when they were little, but as soon Noteworthy Music as he had grown enough to was started by Jim's mother, Janet, in 1987. help out he was conscripted to move pianos It started out as a with his dad. In Soon, Jim's dad saw 2018 Jim realized the the potential of the business had grown business and left the beyond his ability to keep corporate world to help out. They added up, so he added a wonderful business an instrument rental partner. The covid-19 program and repair pandemic has been really shop, pianos and hard on school music guitars, and by 1994 programs and private the business had lessons, but thanks to video expanded twice and conferencing, teachers no longer fit in the little strip mall where were able to stay in some form of contact with their it started. meet the musician Bethanie + her viola

Jim teaching

What’s something unique about running the music store?

come on in! :)

Jim + Bethanie

How has making music changed your life? Music has always been part of our lives. Jim played the trombone in his school days and marched with the band. Bethanie has been playing the viola since she was young, and majored in music. So it isn't so much that music changed our life but that it has shaped the direction. Opportunities and choices were available to us because of the work we put in earlier.

Any advice for musicians? Putting time and effort into music at a young age is worth it. Nowadays everyone wants instant gratification. Music is something that builds and grows over time. Stick with it, keep practicing and celebrate the milestones. And share your talent! As a musician you have a wonderful gift that others can enjoy, whether you are performing, teaching or both.

Though owning your own business can be stressful, it is also very rewarding. The best and hardest part is you get just as much out of it as you put in. The music business is very competitive, but most people appreciate the attention and care you can provide as a small business owner. Bethanie found that as a classically-taught musician it is easy to get "stuck" in the classical music scene, but with a music store we get to meet and talk with all kinds of musicians, from classical to grunge, worship band, fiddling, jazz, and everything in between. We also get to know teachers, repair technicians, and instrument makers. By far our favorite part of running the music store is working with children who come in to get their first instrument. The excitement on their faces never gets old. When children receive lessons at the store we get to hear their progress each week and build long-lasting relationships with them and their parents. Work doesn't feel like work when you are around people you like the whole time!

coming up next: look forward to a new feature in the fall, where you get to meet + learn about athletes.

passion

all about

In this feature you'll learn about different passions, how to find one, and to be inspired by other people's passions. In this issue, we get to hear from Robin! Her passion is baking. Take a look!

Meet Robin!

I'm a wife, mother of two grown children and a sweet dog named Walter. I work in elementary special education. I love working with kids! I enjoy traveling with my family and trying new foods and bringing some of the flavors home with me. Cooking and baking for my family has always been one of my favorite things to do. As I travel, I try recipes from the places I visit. One of the recipes I've made are Afghan cookies which are native to New Zealand. They are made with chocolate and corn flakes and are absolutely delicious! When I was in New Zealand I was served a gelato with an Afghan cookie on top. It was amazing!

Robin's Passion I have enjoyed baking since I was a child. I love the precision of baking and seeing the results of my efforts. There is a real science to baking that makes it different from cooking.

Tell us more about your passion!

・

Inspire to Create magazine 21

When I had my own family, I shared my love of baking with my children. At a very early age, they were helping me make flourless chocolate cakes, brownies, cookies, banana bread, you name it. The kitchen would be a mess after but we had so much fun. They learned the fundamentals and began baking on their own just like I had as a child. They made some amazing desserts! My daughter is an excellent baker. My son has turned into a talented cook! There is nothing better than the smell of something baking in the oven. I am very fussy about the ingredients I use. Everything is made from scratch with nothing artificial. You can really taste the difference. It takes a little more effort but I think it's worth it.

baking Here's a cool fact Robin learned: Bread is one of my favorite foods and I have always been in awe of bread bakers and the beautiful loaves they create. During the pandemic I had trouble finding yeast to make bread. So, I began researching how to make homemade yeast. I watched many YouTube videos, read lots of articles and analyzed different techniques for creating yeast. I spent three months and went through almost 15 pounds of flour before my yeast was successful. I was about to give up when I found it bubbling and happy! It was a true act of chemistry and I was fascinated by it. I still am. Since then, I have learned to make wild yeast bread and traditional sour dough bread. They are delicious and healthy. I have not purchased a loaf of bread in over a year! My family loves it.

Motivation for others? Don't give up! If it's not working, give yourself a little time off and try again. Experiment with different techniques until you find the one that works for you. Good things take time and are worth it. Think about what you find inspiring. What do you find yourself curious about? It could turn into your passion.

Strawberry Shortcake

How did you get into baking? I grew up in a home where love and creativity were expressed with food. As a sweets lover, I gravitated to baking! As a child I would help my mom make cookies, pies, cakes and an Armenian sweet bread called Choreg. It's delicious. As I learned, I began making Toll House cookies on my own. I would make them every Saturday for my family.

Some of Robin's fresh baked bread! Looks super tasty!

h t t h i e w k's a + q answers to questions readers asked on the last mag poll :)

Your format is always perfect, organized, and clear. How do you do it? Aww thank you! We have lots of white for clarity, and are always aware of the margins and spacing. We stick with just a few fonts, and try to not make the design overwhelming :).

How do you make the front of the magazine? It depends! First choice goes to our illustrator Leah, but sometimes Kate will do it (both of us make art digitally using the app Procreate and our Apple Pencils). Or it might be a photo from Canva or an interview as well.

Is it hard being so far apart? Do you do it on Zoom? It really can be, mostly friendship-wise. We miss each other all the time, but having the connection with the magazine makes it a lot easier! It's nice because the magazine is a reason to talk :)). Magazine-wise, it isn't too hard and we use Face Time and text to communicate. We've been doing this mostly since the beginning, so it isn't much of a change.

th the k's i w a + q answers to questions readers asked on the last mag poll :)

How did you put all the cool designs in there?

For the design, do you use templates?

So most of them we make (Kate + Leah on the Procreate app). For other design features we don't make, we get them right from Canva and always credit them. It's always an easy drag and drop to put on our design elements, and then all we have to do is format!

We use Canva! (canva.com) It's a free program, and it's perfect for design! Highly recommend! We don't use templates, we design the pages ourselves :).

About how many people do you send the mag to? Basically everyone we know who might like it! Between school, family, and friends, maybe 50-75 people! It's hard to know how many people actually read it though, so that's why we use a form (at the end of the mag).

How long did it take you to figure out how to do it online (canva)? A bit to find our style, but honestly not much! Canva is so easy to use! It was a great improvement from using Google Docs for design haha.

Who proofreads? We used to have a whole squad, but then we figured out we only needed one person. Kate's grandma does it most of the time (thx grandma :), or our friend Tessa K.!

How do you prioritize topics? We usually start with some quick features, (like this one!) and then chunk out the rest. Sometimes, it can take a while for features to be completed. Sometimes we are waiting for graphics, interviews, formatting, or even just a mental block. We change our order almost every time we make the magazine to be honest :).
