hi! the welcome page Hello everyone and happy fall! Welcome back to the Inspire to Create magazine. This issue we have so many new and fun things! So let's dive in to a few highlights. if i were a...

first grade teacher q + a with kenzie perry, who works at jackling elementary in utah meet kenzie I am happily married to my husband Cade, and we are so excited to welcome our first baby in February! I've lived in Utah pretty much my whole life and love it. I'm happiest when I have a lot of good things to do during my day. We have the best hiking/running trails all around where we live and I love to spend time up in those woods.

what's it like being a first grade teacher?

You never know what each day will bring! There are times I wake up super energized and excited for what will be going on that day, and there are times I wake up and I tell my husband, "Don't make me go back to the zoo!"

Nevertheless, there must be a warm smile on my face when I walk through those classroom doors. Once I arrive at school, I am juggling what seems like 100 things at a time. Not only do I have to teach what I planned for the day to a squirrelly bunch, but I'm also thinking about where we need to be and at what time, who is bothering who, if everyone feels loved, and don't get me started with the parents. My students make me laugh! I mean you can't make up the things I have heard them say in their little conversations. It is the best.

if you could do anything for a day, what would you do?

That's an easy question. I would go to Disneyland! It really is the happiest place on earth.

When I know that my students feel safe, comfortable, and loved in my room, I know I've done my job. I want them to be able to share with me what's going on at their home, the good and the ugly. My favorite thing is to pull a little one aside and ask them about how their morning went or what they did after school the day before. They just light up when they have my full attention.

Many of them don't have anyone at home that sits and listens to them. I want them to know I care and I want to hear what they have to say.

advice for anyone interested in your profession?

I would encourage anyone wanting to be a teacher to go see what it is like. Talk to other teachers. Ask them if you can come volunteer in their classrooms for a few days at a time.

That really helped me to realize what being a teacher was all about. There are many 'behind the scenes' things that teacher do every day that not everyone knows about.

day in the life -I wake up at 5:45 to shower, get ready, read, make lunches, eat breakfast, and get to work by 7:50. Once I'm at school I'm running around getting breakfast to my classroom, prepping last minute supplies, and bringing in my students from outside. We do small group reading and centers, recess, whole group Language Arts lessons and activities, lunch, Math lesson and activities, math small groups, computer time, writing, phonemic awareness practice, and much more! I treasure my lunch break and try to get as much planning and prepping done while they are at PE, Library, or Art. I am a big believer in mindfulness, dancing, yoga, and meditation in my class. We take a lot of breaks in-between transitions to get our wiggles out. I leave school around 3:30. At home I make dinner, help with dishes, hopefully move my body outside or at the gym, and then Cade and I watch a show or movie to wind down at night.

We LIVE for the weekends!

as a teacher, what would you say is the most challenging thing?

Most days I feel like I am running a marathon! I am an adult who only has so much energy every day and I'm with 18-25 six year olds for 6 hours every day.

It gets very tiring. That's why it is so important I take care of myself physically, mentally, and emotionally. Exercise and therapy are awesome. I do not take any work home with me. When I am home I can be Kenzie, not Mrs. Perry.

what's the thing you're most excited about for this school year?

I’m mostly excited to see the growth and progress of my students this year.

Many of them are very behind because of Covid and not doing distance learning work from home last year. It’s very fulfilling to see their progress from the beginning of the year not knowing all their letters, to helping them learn to read and write by the end.

Closer to Nowhere by Ellen Hopkins This middle-grade novel in verse deals with lots of hard things, especially PTSD as a teen and all that comes with someone moving into your home. I love how it was written, with a dualperspective. It gives such an amazing view -- what it's like for the person dealing with all this inside, and what others see on the outside, and how Hannah and Cal grow and learn to see more of each other's views. Books like these truly give me such empathy and understanding for people going through this right now. So, so good. might not recommend to sensitive or young readers, just because it definitely does deal with a lot, but otherwise, totally do. - Kate Middle Grade

spotlighting service Pearl Street Cupboard & Café written by Kate with Stephen Reitter

Pearl Street Cupboard & Café is truly a blessing for many people in the community who are struggling to eat each night. Pearl Street has become one of the biggest food pantries in the state. Providing groceries to residents in need, gifting people with nutritious food to prepare at home. Different from the traditional food pantry, meals are also served.

Seven days a week, a full-on meal with three courses is served by volunteers, and the meal is free of charge. Steven Reitter lives in the community and has been involved with the food cafe. He knew they needed volunteers from when his son's high school group helped out there. "In life we're all on the same team and we need to help each other. I do what I can." When we asked him what the most rewarding thing about volunteering at Pearl Street, he told us his favorite part is getting to know the guests, learning about them and letting them know others care about them.

What are the greatest needs of Pearl Street Cupboard & Café?

"Donations of canned food are always welcome but donations of cash go much further. The Cafe is able to buy food at huge discounts which means a $1 donation might bring them $10 of food at supermarket prices.

We always need 'extras' like toiletry items, warm socks, blankets and gloves."

Steve says, "Service to others is something very important to me. My earliest recollection of helping others was as a school crossing guard when I was in the 5th grade. I have always pitched in wherever I saw a need, whether as a 12 year old boy helping in the food booth at the Local Rotary Club Auction or as an Auxiliary Police Officer for the past 33 years. I was blessed to spend the last five years as the primary care-giver for my father. My dad's mother died when he was 6, and his father when he was 10. I cannot imagine what it was like being an orphan at the tail of the Great Depression. Despite this background, my father graduated from school and then immediately signed up for the Navy. He was part of the D-Day Invasion which helped put an end to World War II. After a year in Europe, he then served in the Philippines until the war was over. He went back to Pennsylvania and went to college, met my mother, had a successful career and a successful family. There were so many reasons my father could have been a failure, but he chose not to be, he persevered, he overcame and he succeeded. My dad was my hero and I was so honored to be his son, to travel with him, play cribbage with him and to be with him as he passed."

outer banks, north carolina UNITED STATES OF AMERICA The Outer Banks: pretty much the perfect beach vacation, along with lots of activities to experience as well. It's a strip of land off the coast of North Carolina. Packed with many beaches, sea life, and beautiful sunsets to end the day. Tubing, parasailing, and jet skis are all some adventures I loved participating in while going to the outer banks the past few years.

Some of the beaches in Corolla are home to wild horses. I loved going on the tour of the beach with my family and getting to see these horses from a distance! The tour I went on was on a beach buggy type car- the perfect mode of transportation for driving on the beach. Another cool tour I went on one year was the dolphin tour! Out on a boat, the scenery itself is amazing, and then once you spot the dolphins, it makes it ten times better! Don't worry though, if you don't go on the tour for dolphins, you have a chance seeing them at the beach. They swim way out, but can see their fins in the water. There's some about snacking on popcorn that is just so fun. Also a good source of fiber, popcorn makes for a great snack.

how to: tips from occupational therapist heidi common problems you see + what advice would you give to people to avoid them?

what’s it like being an occupational therapist? give us a little behind the scenes.

Physical therapy often assists patients working on lower body/core strengthening and balance. Keeping the areas in your home free of obstruction and well-lit can help reduce risk of falls. Staying active can also help maintain strength. It is important to regularly see your physician and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Tendonitis is frequently associated with repetitive motion. Taking breaks, avoiding doing a particular activity for extended periods of time, and maintaining good posture are all important to prevent tendonitis. I also have seen many “weekend warriors” who try to accomplish large projects at home requiring strength/motion that are outside of their typical routine and have resulting sharp pain.

Taking breaks and stretching throughout task can help reduce pain. I often see patients with thumb pain due to frequent phone use or young moms doing child care such as lifting or changing diapers. Changing how you hold items can reduce irritation (using a pop socket, propping phone on something versus gripping it, using the more proximal joints when able).

Each day working as an occupational therapist in rural health is unique. I have gained a wide variety of skills working in outpatient working with injured patients or working in inpatient with medically fragile patients trying to get them as independent as possible with their daily activities such as dressing/bathing/cooking. I also see school-aged children working on fine motor, adaptive skills, and sensory needs. The Richland Hospital also is contracted to do the birth to three program which is in home therapy typically but went virtual during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. My favorite part of my job is the hands-on portion of my job working with patients. My definite least favorite part of the job is documentation and working with certain insurances.

meet heidi!

I was born and raised in Richland Center, WI to a farmer father and a medical secretary mother. I have two amazing older siblings who gave me the best job ever of being an auntie. I chose to go to Concordia University Wisconsin for both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. I was able to get both degrees in 4.5 years. One fun fact is all the buildings were connected by underground tunnels since the campus was originally home to nuns right on Lake Michigan. I have a wild 4 year old shih tzu mix named Annie who keeps me busy. Outside of work I enjoy any crafting (embroidery, painting, crochet or sewing), kayaking, cheesy Korean dramas, and going out dancing.

what's your fave thing about your sport?

I love girls basketball because of the strategy it entails, teamwork, cohesiveness, and fundamental play. When a team is cohesive and competes on both ends of the floor it’s the best environment to coach.

I think when players and parents focus on themselves too much, it takes away from the team aspect.

In the season it’s 6 days a week, 2 hours a practice.

Basketball players work more than just in season it’s a culture. We generally play 2 games in a week. We scout opponents, study film.

Season generally starts right after Thanksgiving and until March .

any advice for athletes in the same sport?

Advice to coaches would be to be authentic, don’t try to be someone else or what coached you. You will learn from trial and error build your own system.

Most important thing is to be able to motivate a team to want the success as much as you do.

I became a varsity head coach my first day as a JV coach when the previous coach quit right before tryouts. Basketball has helped me build some of my best memories and lifelong connections. I love coaching and teaching the game. I feel very fortunate for my daughter to have so many positive role models and strong examples of female student athletes.

as a coach, what’s the biggest piece of advice you have for players?

It’s a marathon not a quick race, the kids who are good early rarely stay good. It’s the one who put the time in consistently, work hard and stay humble who succeed.

Love and appreciate the work and the detail you put in, it’s a process. with a player who went on to play internationally

funny edits is pistachio a genre of music? when we are making our quizzes, we use the same text box as the previous quiz, just changing the text. sometimes before we change the answers, the questions and answers make us laugh, since they don't fit well at all!

pinterest inspo doesn't make the cut we made this super cute collage of back-toschool hairstyles! we found them on pinterest, and it's SO hard to credit them, so we decided to just post it on our instagram instead of putting it in the mag -- something that happen more in the future as well :)

How long does it take you guys to plan, finish making, and proofing?

This is the most common question we get! And it's the hardest to answer, haha.

We're working basically all the time! Either on the current mag in progress, planning ahead, promoting the newest mag, etc. We take breaks, but we're hoping to continue to work ahead of schedule as well :)

What first inspired you to make the original mag!?

We really loved reading the American Girl magazine, (which sadly isn't made anymore) and wanted to do our own twist, especially to give tweens + teens a fun, positive mag to read. Now, we have evolved so much. Our first magazines had very similar ideas and content as the American Girl one. Now, we look for inspiration from other magazines, but come up with our own unique ideas.

How do you know what kind of design you want to do?

It really depends. We usually come up with our content ideas, and then play around with formatting. A lot.

We have certain overall vibe we're going for, and just a clean, professional look as well.

Are you always motivated to work on it? or do you have "creative block" sometimes?

Sometimes, we get on the phone, and start talking and just can't get the "vibe" going for us to work. We get frustrated trying to make sure we meet our flexible deadline, and just trying to make the best product possible. We often just decide to talk about other things when we get our "creative block" and catch up, which often helps us to be motivated for the next day.

The magazine is so professional.

Are you getting help from adults or a marketing firm?

We cracked up at this question, because the answer is no! We have a few adults who help out occasionally with proof-reading and small things like that, but besides that, it's just us! But hey, if there's anyone out there who would like to mentor us, we're open to ideas + opportunities ;).

How do you organize all these interviews with amazing people?

We have professions in mind, and then we ask around and find people! The interview process is actually a long one :). We'll contact the person, send them an email with the info, send them the questions, etc., ask them for pictures, and then when that's all in, we'll take it from there :).
