ELEVATION LIFE CELEBRATION CENTER

ENTRANCE OF THE LIFE CELEBRATION CENTER

The purpose of a space for divine worship is a sacred atmosphere that provides tranquility, helps us to recollect ourselves and fills us with reverence. The Elevation Life Celebration Center focuses on this sacred experience, allowing mourners to create a spiritual connection with their loved ones in this unique tranquil environment. Located at the Nature Conservancy on the Niobrara River Valley Preserve, Elevation is a nondenominational chapel, free of religious iconography.

The building emerges from the land, hiding its true scale and uses natural elements and light to create a sacred space for everyone to mourn, bury and visit with their loved ones. Scattering grounds to the north preserve these spaces, providing a serene space to reflect upon a loved one’s life. The tranquil view to the left is a place for reflection, encompassing the totality of the experience at the Elevation Life Celebration Center.

After entering the center, you descend down a staircase into the heart of the building. The large double height atrium leads you towards the rear windows overlooking the spreading and burial grounds. The windows surrounding you bring the natural environment to the inside. At the bottom of the stairs, the sacred structure appears in a mass of sandstone, reminiscent of the Sandhill location.

Once you have completed the descent, the atrium separates the voluminous Sacred Space into the main chapel on one side, from the smaller chapel and columbarium on the other.

The double height spaces of these sacred rooms give notions of a rise to a greater place for the loved ones that have passed.

SECTION THROUGH THE HEART OF THE BUILDING

This section through the length of the building showcases the double height spaces, and the windows which bring in light from above.

The columbarium features a reflecting pool under the central light. The tranquility garden between the two rooms also contains a water feature, creating a calming noise to connect us back to the Niobrara River Valley.

ENCLOSED ENTRANCE TO THE GRAND CHAPEL

To enter the chapel, you proceed through a small dark threshold before entering the large chapel. The chapel then grows dramatically taller, with the walls and ceiling leaning in on you to get a feeling of envelopment and bounce the natural light deeper into the space.

Illuminated wall openings bring in a greater light glow to emphasize features of the chapel.

A 20th Century scholar of religion, Mircea Eliade describes sacred as an experience, and believes it often appears to us in the middle of everyday activities such as seeing the deep stillness of a robin sitting attentively on its branch.

Designed for UNL College of Architecture’s Spring 2020 Dri-Design Competition in Mark Bacon’s studio, Benjamin Stirtz and I created this sanctuary to be an experience, from the death and cremation process to the burial and visitation grounds.

Located on East Warren Avenue in Detroit Michigan, my goal was to restore the shell of the building close to its original historic condition and create an interior space that would fit the needs of the residents based upon surveys the community had developed and completed.

MY ITERATION FOR THE CURVED CORNER WALL

Designing the class model was almost as intricate as creating our designs. The class model consisted of an outside “shell”, then everyone created their own insert for their design of the building.

This section shows my input and ideation of how to create the curved wall for the model. I used five layers of Crescent Board, with each being slightly more rounded than the previous one to create the curve and thickness needed for scale.

GROUND FLOOR

Working from the Inside Out, my design created a wedding venue that could support the needs of the community.

The lower level contains a cafe restaurant and small retail spaces for other vendors that could become startup businesses and offer hands on training and job opportunities for the residents.

Upstairs, a community area was created that could be used to teach classes, have neighborhood community meetings and offer a unique wedding venue in hopes of attracting others to the neighborhood. The third floor features a small bedroom suite for the newlywed couple to stay on their wedding night.

THE RETRACTABLE ROOF

The building contains a retractable roof to provide an open air venue for the weddings that still provides privacy, yet can withstand the weather conditions in Michigan.

The second floor terrace provides an exterior courtyard for weddings or outdoor dining as well as space for the cafe to grow fresh herbs and vegetables to use.

To restore East Warren Avenue, the community has bonded to determine what they want and need in the area. In order to assist this, this building has been restored to its original glory, and been reinvented to promote local businesses and training within those businesses in order to help nurture and assist those that live in the neighborhood.

Designed for Marc Maxey’s studio in the Spring of 2019, twelve of us worked together to create this base by lasercutting, painting, and designing the details for one larger model. We then each created our own model to go inside for our individual designs.

LOCATED ON THE CORNER OF CAMPUS AT 9TH AND Q STREETS

Our vision for a new student learning center on the University of Nebraska’s city campus was to merge that gap between the city and the school.

Our site, located on the corner of 10th and ‘Q’ Streets, provides the perfect intersection.

The location allows for collaboration between professional mentorships within the business community, as well as allowing student clubs and organizations the opportunity to exhibit their business venture, art displays and presentations in a more public atmosphere.

The first floor contains the cafe for patrons to the performing arts to stop and mingle, as well as a pop up vendor space for the students to exhibit their work, or for professionals to set up booths to attract the students.

We designed the first floor to be the more public realm of things. Retractable doors offer the opportunity for the cafe to open to indoor and outdoor dining. The mini mart focused on students that may be food insecure, using their Ncard to offer them asssistance without standing out from the crowd.

FOURTH FLOOR

The middle floors offer study spaces, collaboration spaces, maker spaces, lounges and a double height auditorium for student activities and demonstrations, while the fourth floor contained the more private sector, housing child care for students with children, sleep pods and outdoor lounges.

The building steps outward and offers many double height spaces across the building allowing more daylight to penetrate the building. Extra openings near the staircases allow the students to connect and see what is going on in other areas as well. The double height auditorium can be seen on the left of the long section, allowing a second balcony area for lounging as well as extra space to view performances when needed.

Our student learning commons is designed to provide needs for everyone on campus. The buildings feature non-gender specific bathrooms, open flexible spaces that can be used for study spaces, multicultural programs, community based learning, and partnering with the professional community in the downtown area. Flexible spaces offer opportunities to create popups for multicultural programs, clubs and associations, and college departments. The purpose of our student learning commons is to be an inclusive nonjudgmental zone where everyone can find their place.

Sydney Meuret and I designed this learning commons completely over zoom during the Spring of 2021 for Sarah Deyong’s studio.

NATURAL LIGHT PHOTOGRAPH

Photography has always been a hobby of mine.

I’ve shot professional portraits and weddings as well as events and personal photos of friends, family and locations I’ve traveled to.

Whether I use natural light, low light, or artificially illuminated light, I generally get the good photos just for being in the right place at the right time.

I feel like photography is a way to document events as well as express my creativity. It’s a skill I plan to incorporate into my Architecture career even more.
