THE SCHOOL’s BIRTHDAY INTERVIEWS

We interviewed Roxy, Mariano and Karina and asked them questions about the school’s birthday.

When is the school’s birthday? When did you celebrate it?

Roxy: The school’s birthday is in November because many years ago people decided we should celebrate the school’s birthday on November 17th, so that is the date. That is also the day we honour former students. We also call it the “Day of Former Students.”

Where did the celebration take place?

How was it organized?

Roxy: The celebration took place in our school.

Mariano Montes organised it on Tuesday 19th. He invited former teachers and former Heads of the school and we looked for pictures of them to show the rest of the students from kindergarten and primary school. The guests told the students stories about those pictures. Then, on Wednesday 20th we asked Junior 6 students to organise a kermese and they prepared games for all primary school students to play. We divided the celebration into different moments in which all the students could play. Apart from that, in the afternoon, we sang the happy birthday song to the school and we ate cake.

Who came to the celebration? What did they do? Did they receive any presents?

Roxy: Marianita came. Marianita is a former teacher and the former School Head. Laura Lucca also came. She was a Head of Kinder for many many years. Gaby Zabala was also there. She was a Kindergarten teacher, a primary teacher and then she was the Deputy Head in Kindergarten and later, Head in primary. Alice Hunt and Nancy Gatti were also part of the celebration. Alice was a music teacher at school for forty years and Nancy was an art teacher at school also for many years. Alice Houson was here too. She was a student at school. Then, she was a teacher. After that, she was a secretary and finally, she ended up as a Representante Legal. Cristina Lareo was also invited. She was a teacher and a Head at school. They received a present. They got very nice plants.

Did you speak during the celebration? What did you say?

Roxy: On Tuesday, I didn’t say anything. On Wednesday when we were playing in the playground, I only organised the event and then we sang Happy Birthday. I asked Chato to say some words because this is Chato’s last year at school. Chato is retiring and since this is his last school’s birthday here at school, I thought it was important for him to say some words so I didn’t say anything this time.

Did you sing the Happy Birthday song? Did you eat cake?

Roxy: Of course! We cannot celebrate a birthday without singing and eating cake. Was the cake good?

Students: Yes!

Did you like the celebration? How did you feel during it?

Mariano: Yes, I liked it very much. I felt very happy. It was very interesting and lovely.

Roxy: I loved the celebration. I think Wednesday morning was fantastic. Did you enjoy it?

Students: Yes!

Roxy: Next year it is your turn, so you have to start thinking about it, because next year you will be responsible for it in the afternoon. You are going to be responsible for organizing everything. Do you think you will be able to do it?

Students: Yes.

Roxy: Yes, you will! What I like the most is when students do things for the rest of the school. I think it’s much nicer when kids do it than when we do it.

Did you know all the headmistresses and headmasters that came to school that day?

Karina: No, I didn't know all the headmistresses and headmasters that came on that day personally but I did know their names. I knew Gabriela Zabala who retired recently, she was the headmistress of the school when I was working as a teacher. I know her very well!

Was it emotional for you to see all the previous headmistresses and headmasters?

Karina: It is nice that we could count on them for being here that day even though they are no longer working at the school. They gave so much to the school so it was wonderful to have them here to celebrate the school’s birthday! And it is a very special one since it is its 65th birthday!

Were you present in all the birthday celebrations of the school?

Karina: I started to be part of the school’s birthday celebrations in 2015, when I started working here. I wasn't here in the previous ones.

Which was your favourite moment of the celebration?

Karina: Every moment of the celebration was wonderful and super nice, it was amazing to have been part of it. I really enjoyed watching old pictures and hearing the protagonists of those pictures telling stories and anecdotes. I also enjoyed sharing with primary students the games that they prepared for us and, of course, singing happy birthday and sharing a piece of cake was amazing, too. As I said, every moment was special!

Why is it important for you to celebrate the school birthday?

Karina: It is always wonderful to celebrate the school's birthday, to think about all the amazing moments we lived through all these sixty-five years and also think about all the beautiful years to come. It means we get to celebrate all the school’s work from its beginning until today. Celebrating a birthday makes us feel happy and excited and the same happens with the school’s birthday, we feel the same and it is very important for each one of us.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Do you know what social media is? Do you spend a lot of time using social media? Many people use social media every day but not everyone knows what it is. It is a form of electronic communication, such as websites for social networking and microblogging, through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content. As everything, this way of communication has its good and bad sides. Let's analyse them and discover if it is worth spending hours and hours scrolling through it.

On the one hand, in social media you can work and be famous as an influencer, youtuber, tiktoker, instagramer, etc. Thanks to this, you can become famous since people like your content and the things you upload to the different platforms, you can earn a lot of money! Also, you can keep in touch with family, friends and with people who live abroad. Being able to talk with other people gives you the possibility of becoming friends with citizens from other countries.

Apart from that, you can learn new things such as languages, DIY’s, how to play an instrument, practice for school, etc. because you can find different apps to do all the things mentioned above. Finally, another positive point to mention is that you can play with friends. It's very entertaining because you can download games which are online and enjoy playing together as a team through call or video call.

On the other hand, thanks to social media you may get kidnapped because you share your personal information such as your address, your phone number, etc. with people you don't know and they may leak your data. To add another negative aspect, it's bad for your health. It can hurt your eyes, your back and neck. In addition, it is not good for your mental health because it can influence you to do things that are harmful and it may generate an addiction to spend time on it. What is more, people are rude to you online. They leave hateful comments and bad posts about you or others. As social media can be anonymous, people feel free to be mean, which is called cyberbullying.

Lastly, you can lose money since people on the internet can scam you. They confuse you and they ask for your personal information in order to have access to your accounts.

To conclude, as it was mentioned before, social media has positive and negative aspects. It may give us money and fame but it also exposes us to a lot of things that are bad for our health and well-being. In our opinion, the bad points outweigh the good points because in order to use this way of communication we have to be aware of the dangers of it. After reading this essay, you have learnt a lot of information about this topic, now it is your turn to decide what is more important, if the good or bad aspects of social media.

FAME

Being famous is when people recognise you because you are very important to them because of your hard work and effort. What do you think about being famous? Would you like to be a famous person? Did you meet any famous people? Some examples of famous people are Mr Beast, Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, Cristiano Ronaldo, Olivia Rodrigo, etc. Nowadays, people become famous easily because of their content in social media and they immediately have lots of followers. The issue of fame is a controversial one because you have a lot of power and for example, you have a lot of money, people treat you differently, they recognise you and follow you on social media, but at the same time you can feel overwhelmed because people can treat you badly, you may feel tired or pressured to post photos and videos.

On the other hand, people follow you everywhere you go. That is why you don’t have your personal space. For example, paparazzi or fans can take photos of you or ask you lots of questions. Apart from that, you may feel stressed because you have to upload photos or videos every day and also you need to think if people will like them. In addition, people can send you aggressive messages to make you feel uncomfortable. To sum up, being famous is marvelous because you can earn a lot of money, have lots of opportunities or you can receive gifts. However, it is risky and overwhelming. For instance, people can hurt you or you can be affected by the power you get. In our opinion, being famous is hard and stressful.
