The Biennale Architecture of Venice, XVII Edition, 2020.

The Biennale Architettura 2020, curated by Hashim Sarkis, will be held in Venice (Giardini and Arsenale) from Saturday August 29th (preview Thursday 27th and Friday 28th) through Sunday November 29th, instead of from May 23rd through November 29th, as previously announced.

The new dates for the Biennale Architettura have been established as a consequence of the recent precautionary measures in the matter of mobility taken by the governments of a growing number of countries around the world, which will have a domino effect on the movement of people and works in coming weeks.

This period of time coincides with the delicate initial phase of setting up an international exhibition as complex as the Biennale Architettura,

which involves architects and institutions from over 63 countries on all continents.

This situation poses a risk to the realization of the Exhibition in its entirety in time for the announced opening date (May 23rd), thereby jeopardizing its quality.

Furthermore, a short-term postponement could be ineffective, considering the complexity of the organizational machine, the number and importance of the subjects involved and the probable absence of many of them.

Unwilling to open an incomplete Exhibition, La Biennale, having heard the curator Hashim Sarkis and in consideration of the difficulties faced by the Participating countries and invited architects, has decided to postpone the inauguration until August 29th, bringing the duration of this year’s edition of the Biennale Architettura back to three months, from the end of August to the end of November.

Statement by Hashim Sarkis “We need a new spatial contract – said Hashim Sarkis - In the context of widening political divides and growing economic inequalities, we call on architects to imagine spaces in which we can generously live together.”

“The architects invited to participate in the Biennale Architettura 2020 are encouraged to include other professions and constituencies—artists, builders, and craftspeople, but also politicians, journalists, social scientists, and everyday citizens. In effect, the Biennale Architettura 2020 asserts the vital role of the architect as both cordial convener and custodian of the spatial contract.”

“In parallel, the 17th Exhibition also maintains that it is in its material, spatial, and cultural specificity that architecture inspires the ways we

live together. In that respect, we ask the participants to highlight those aspects of the main theme that are uniquely architectural.”

“The question, “How will we live together?” is as much a social and political question as a spatial one. Aristotle asked it when he was defining politics, and he came back to propose the model of the city. Every generation asks it and answers it differently. More recently rapidly changing social norms, growing political polarization, climate change, and vast global inequalities are making us ask this question more urgently and at different scales than before. In parallel, the weakness of the political models being proposed today compels us to put space first and, perhaps like Aristotle, look at the way architecture shapes inhabitation for potential models for how we could live together.”

“The Biennale Architettura 2020 is motivated by new kinds of problems that the world is putting in front of architecture, but it is also inspired by the emerging activism of young architects and the radical revisions

being proposed by the profession of architecture to take on these challenges. But more than ever, architects are called upon to propose alternatives. As citizens, we mobilize our synthetic skills to bring people together to resolve complex problems. As artists, we defy the inaction that comes from uncertainty to ask “What if?”. And as builders, we draw from our bottomless well of optimism. The confluence of roles in these nebulous times can only make our agency stronger and, we hope, our architecture more beautiful.”

The International Exhibition The Exhibition will be articulated between the Central Pavilion at the Giardini, the Arsenale, and Forte Marghera, including 113 participants in competition coming from 46 countries with increased representation from Africa, Latin America, and Asia. In addition to the invited participants, the Biennale Architettura 2020 also includes Stations+Cohabitats, researchers out of competition on the themes of the Exhibition and

developed by universities around the world. Organised in five scales between the Arsenale and the Central Pavilion at the Giardini, the Exhibition also presents large installations connected to one of the five scales, which will be placed in the external spaces of the Arsenale and the Giardini. “How will we play together?” is the project devoted to children’s play at Forte Marghera, presented by five architects and an architectural photographer. La Biennale di Venezia and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London for the fifth consecutive year present the Applied Arts Pavilion Special Project titled British Mosques at the Arsenale, Sale d’Armi. Collaborating with author and architect Shahed Saleem, the pavilion looks at the self-built and often undocumented world of adapted mosques. Three case studies will examine the Brick Lane mosque, a former Protestant chapel then Synagogue; Old Kent Road mosque housed in a former pub; and Harrow Central mosque, a purpose-built space that sits next door to the converted terraced house it used to occupy. be three weekends for six appointments, and in each meeting two topics inspired by the recurring issues in the participants' projects will be discussed: new challenges that climate change is putting in front of architecture; the role of public space in recent urban uprisings; new reconstruction methods; the changing forms of collective housing across the globe; the Architecture of Education and the Education of the Architect; the relationship between curation and architecture. Biennale Sessions: the Project for Universities For the eleventh consecutive year La Biennale dedicates the Biennale Sessions project to Universities, Fine Arts Academies and Higher Education Institution. The goal is to offer favourable conditions for students and teachers to organize three-day group visits for fifty people or more, offering the possibility to organize seminars free of charge at the Exhibition's venues, and assistance in organizing their journey and stay.

Educational

There are 63 National Participations in the historic Pavilions at the Giardini, at the Arsenale and in the historic city centre of Venice. Three are participating for the first time at the Biennale Architettura: Grenada, Iraq and Uzbekistan. The Italian Pavilion at the Tese delle Vergini in the Arsenale, sponsored and promoted by the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali e per il Turismo, Direzione Generale Creatività contemporanea, is curated by Alessandro Melis.

Weekends on Architecture The Weekends on Architecture will supplement the curatorial programme for the 17th International Architecture Exhibition through a series of lectures and panels that will bring together architects and scholars from around the world to address the question How Will We Live Together?. For the past decade, La Biennale has been devoting increased attention to learning activities, and has developed a growing commitment to socalled “Educational” initiatives addressed to the audience of its Exhibitions’, to universities, young people, and children from schools at all levels. In the past two years, La Biennale’s great Exhibitions – Biennale Architettura 2018 and Biennale Arte 2019 - had 114,672 participants in Educational activities in total, amongst whom 68,205 were youngsters.

A broad Educational programme has been scheduled for 2020 as well, addressed to individuals and groups of students, children, adults, families, professionals, companies, and universities. All the initiatives aim at actively involving the participants, and are led by professional operators, carefully trained by La Biennale di Venezia. They are divided into two categories: Guided Tours and Workshop Activities.

Collateral Events to the Biennale Architecture of Venice 2020, by Francesca Grossi During the press conference, held on 27th February 2020 in Venice, by the Biennale President Paolo Baratta and the curator Hashim Sarkis, explained the concept in detail, and announced the 114 invited participants to the International Exhibition, with equal representation of men and women, and coming from 46 countries with increased representation from Africa, Latin America, and Asia. The Venice Biennale announces that there will be 15 collateral events (two more then the last edition) at the 17th International Architecture Exhibition. These are promoted by national and international non-profit bodies and institutions. Organized in various places throughout the city, they present a wide range of projects and participations that enrich the pluralism of voices that distinguishes the Venice Exhibition.

Moscow International Flower Show announces the First SMART GARDEN International competition for students, designers, engineers and other specialists in the field of landscape architecture and garden design.

The challenge of the competition is to find interesting and innovative ideas in creating a “smart” ecogarden and to stimulate students and professionals in the field of landscape design to think of the sustainable solutions of the garden.

By this topic we mean using a sustainable approach in creating a garden that, together with new technologies, would embody the best ideas of landscape design and be energy-efficient, environmentally friendly and human oriented.

An international jury will evaluate the works, and the winners will have an opportunity to realize and demonstrate their garden in the MUZEON Art Park.

2, AIMS OF THE COMPETITIONS Providing opportunities for students and professionals in the field of landscape design and urban improvement; - promotion of the ecological ideas and the use of energy-saving technologies; - formation of a vision of a “smart” garden as an element of a “smart” city; - search for interesting and innovative ideas and technologies for green spaces.

In the project, you can use one or more features that ensure technological efficiency and environmental friendliness of the garden, for example: 1. Water. Reuse of rainwater and wastewater.

2. Soil cleaning and treatment. Garden on the wasteland. Prevention of soil erosion.

3. Clean air. Plants and trees that clean better and moisturize the air.

4. Biodiversity. Plants that contribute the biodiversity.

4.2. SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS Your garden can measure up to 25 m2.

The organizing committee of the Festival will approve the exact location of the garden.

Initially, a flat topography without existing trees and fences is considered.

The selection of plants should be appropriate for the season and climate.

Although there can exceptions if you have different proposals (for example vertical gardens or roof gardens).

4.3 FILES TO SUBMIT 1. The official entry form listing the author or team of the project, contacts 2. A brief description of the project . Describe the concept, main features, and technics.

3. Sketches and general plan of the garden, including vegetation layout, plant list and decorative elements and technical schemes.

Sketches can be done either by hand or on a computer.

All kind of artistic representation will be welcome.

4. RULES AND REQUIREMENTS 4.1. PARTICIPANTS - University students from the Architecture or Landscape design department; - Architects, designers of engineers in the field of Landscape Design or Architecture; - Creative multidisciplinary team

The project must be saved as a PDF and include the title, but with no mention of the project team.

The resolution of the images must be 300 dpi.

The file must be a maximum size of 20 MB: The text must be unjustified, left aligned and 1.5 spaced, in Times New Roman, font 12.
