destinations are at the centre of the choices of high-end travellers. «Tuscany,- continues Marras - is one of the favourite destinations for this market segment. We want to promote not only our cities, towns and famous seaside resorts, but also the complex harmony of landscapes, traditions, craftsmanship and flavours that can be found in places that are still off the beaten track but have so much to offer. Part of the promotional campaign will be dedicated to the sea, which undoubtedly remains the main attraction of Tuscany in summer.» Tuscany is the number one region in Italy for the number of restaurants, and food is the main reason for travelling to visit the region which was recently named Italy’s «favourite destination for food and wine holidays.» A tourist product that is on the verge of becoming even more appealing, rewarding Vetrina Toscana with its constantly growing network of players - from producers to restaurateurs, hoteliers to sommeliers and retailers to international chefs. «The 650th anniversary of Boccaccio’s death and the 550th anniversary of Michelangelo’s birth will be two pieces of the complex puzzle that identifies Tuscany as a destination with a rich concentration of culture and a strong cultural commitment, - explains the councillor. - Our stakeholder partners are turning these two themes into a series of proposals and experiences of major appeal.»

FLORENCE - Having consolidated the 2024 growth of international visitors, Tuscany has launched a well-structured promotional plan. Having signed a collaboration agreement with the Spanish region of Castilla La Mancha, the region’s extra-EU actions are now focused on the United States, a market that in 2024 exceeded Germany for the number of arrivals. In July the US will be present in the Italian pavilion at the Expo in Osaka, before moving to Tokyo with targeted promotional events. Tuscany’s key themes for 2025 are sustainable tourism, food and wine tourism, and UNESCO and family tourism, with the overall aim of promoting

areas of the region that are less involved in organized tourism. «At the ITB in Berlin we will be promoting family tourism - says Leonardo Marras, Tuscany’s regional councillor for the economy, productive activities, credit policies and tourism. Through discussions with operators, key elements of a tourist offer have emerged that cater to all types of families while showcasing our traditional culture of hospitality. The aim is to increase and improve the range of accommodation on offer, in line with new trends and contemporary sensibilities.» Marriott Bonvoy’s “Ticket to Travel 2025” research highlights how holistic experiences and the exploration of new

TURIN - Piedmont’s provisional tourism data for 2024 points to a 2% growth over 2023. Arrivals and departures are on the increase, as is the number of foreign visitors, which has risen by about one percentage point. For Piedmont, in line with “Piedmont for All,” which features 21 accessible and sustainable routes, the 2025 mission statement is focusing on multiple key areas. «We are aiming for a Piedmont within everyone’s reach, - says Marina Chiarelli, regional councillor for tourism, culture and sport, a region committed to breaking down architectural barriers, improving interregional transport and making travel easier for those arriving at Turin’s Caselle Airport or those on international and intercontinental flights flying into nearby Malpensa Airport. turn of the ATP Finals in November, Piedmont has other important events scheduled for 2025. From 23 to 26 August the provinces of Biella, Cuneo, Novara, Turin and Vercelli will host the 2025 Vuelta a España, the most important Spanish cycling race, while from 28 to 31 August Turin will host the final international men’s volleyball tournament before the World Championships due to take place in the Philippines. In the Jubilee year, growing interest in nature and slow tourism enriches the network of trails within the Piedmont Spiritual Paths System and the circuit of villas around Lake Mag-

giore, Lake Orta and the Ossola Valleys which are guardians of centuries-old parks and unique botanical gardens. Turin and Cuneo are also “magical” destinations as they will host the prestigious FISM Italy World Championship of Magic from 14 to 19 July. The calendar is further enhanced by great food and wine. From The World’s 50 Best Restaurants, which will announce the world’s best chefs on 19 June, to Risò when, from 12 to 14 September, Vercelli will host the first edition of an international fair dedicated to the world’s most popular food. This will be followed by Cheese in Bra (1922 September) and in October to December the International Alba White Truffle Fair.

experiencing Lombardy

And lanD: at a leisurely pace

BY FEDERICA DE LUCA

MILAN - With less than a year until the Winter Olympic Games, set to take place from February 6 to 22, 2026, Lombardy - alongside Veneto and Trentino Alto Adige - is embracing collaboration as a strategic model. Starting with “Garda Unico” a project designed to develop a unique and comprehensive experience around Italy’s largest lake, which is one of the most sought-after destinations in northern Italy. «Tourists who visit Lake Garda do not distinguish between the borders of Lombardy, Veneto and Trentino, - says Barbara Mezzali, regional councillor for tourism, fashion, territorial marketing and major events. - To avoid road congestion, we are

working together to improve public and private transport services on the lake, adapting the frequency of the boats to the seasons and to demand.» The presence of lakes, the river Po and an efficient network of waterways is leading Lombardy to progressively shift what is now road transport to water. Not just with a nod to sustainability, but also as an opportunity to enjoy unique experiences. This is already happening along the Ticino river that links villages suspended in time a few kilometres from Milan and Malpensa airport, and also in the town of Mantua where boats from Venice arrive with 200 or 300 passengers who then continue their tour on bicycles. For the region the international market represents 70% to 85% depending on the province, and now around Milan, a consolidated brand and centre stage for fashion shows and major events, it intends highlighting the

AOSTA - In winter 2024 the Val d’Aosta region broke through the four million attendance mark, with roughly 50% Italian and 50% foreign visitors in, while for the other seasons the foreign share was 40%. «Today, in addition to the historically leading markets, the UK and French-speaking countries, we are considering actions in Scandinavia, says Giulio Grosjacques, regional councillor for tourism, sport and commerce. - We are also looking at areas that have grown “spontaneously,” like the United States, which is on the rise but still does not consider the Val d’Aosta as a unique destination, but more a stopover on a wider tour.» The Val d’Aosta is identifying new targets by enhancing the natural verticality of the territory. «From the valley floor up to the 4,810 metres of Mont Blanc, the Val d’Aosta region can boast landscapes and peaks that are unique in Italy. At low and medium altitudes there are 5,000 kilometres of farm tracks, paths and mule tracks - some of which are accessible while others are being safeguarded and the signage updated – that are made for walking, mountain bike riding and horseriding»,- added Grosjacques. Among the region’s most popular trails the Cammino Balteo climbs to an altitude of 1,330 metres,

Reserved for the more experienced, the Alte Vie (High Routes) follow surveyed and signposted paths that touch the four 4,000-metre peaks, with stops in mountain huts and bivouacs. The Alte Vie are also the scene of world trail races, of which the Tor des Gèant is the best known. Either as a delicacy to take home or to give as a gift, something that can't be bought elsewhere. This event focuses on a niche sport that encourages extended stays both for the athletes, who need to acclimatize, and for the families accompanying them, who take the opportunity to enjoy a holiday and get to know the valley. «It is estimated that in 2030 Europe will be visited by some 100 million visitors with disabilities, the vast majority of them accompanied, and we are preparing to welcome them,- adds councillor Grosjac-

ques. -For some years now we have been investing in enabling people with physical, sensory and cognitive disabilities to use the cableways, the cultural heritage circuit, and the activities and facilities in the area, making the Val d’Aosta a virtuous destination, accessible to all. We have trained mid-mountain guides, ski instructors and mountain guides, and we have invested in the necessary aids to allow those with difficulties to fully experience our slopes and mountains.» F.D.L.

Lake Idro

exploring Lakes Garda, Iseo, and Idro BY PAMELA MCCOURT FRANCESCONE

The elegance of Lake Garda Garda, on 143 square miles of surface area and with a maximum depth of 1,135 feet, is the largest lake in Italy. More of a small sea really, it is nestled between the foothills of the Alps and the Po Valley. To the south it is encircled by rolling moraine hills shaped by retreating glaciers, while to the north, towering mountain ranges enclose it, giving it the appearance and path of a fjord. Its shores, blessed with a mild Mediterranean climate, have characteristic villages, castles, monasteries and enchanting towns abundant in monuments and steeped in history. The lake’s exceptional beauty, extraordinary views, mild climate and natural warmth and hospitality have attracted poets, writers, artistic and cultural celebrities such as Goethe, Lord Byron James Joyce, Ezra Pound and Franz Kafka to its shores.

The discreet charm of Lake Iseo Lake Iseo has been known as Christo’s Lake since the celebrated artist chose it in 2016 for his “The Floating Piers” installation, the floating walkway of polyethylene cubes that connected the town of Sulzano with Monte Isola and the little island of San Paolo. This cultural happening brought the romantic charm of Lake Iseo, the highest lake island in Europe and the largest in all of central and southern Europe, to the attention of visitors from all over the world. Fascinating and romantic for the ever-changing nature of its landscape, this lake is ideal for sailing and windsurfing, paragliding and hang-gliding thanks to the constant breeze, but also a favourite with those seeking relaxation and untouched nature. It has charming hotels and small guesthouses, gastronomic tra-

ditions, and a friendly and refined environment and, a little further on, towards Franciacorta, there are golf courses and vineyards producing the prestigious Franciacorta wines.

The unspoiled nature of Lake Idro Lake Idro, at over 12,00 feet asl, is the highest of Lombardy’s pre-alpine lakes and is the ideal destination for peaceful, relaxing and extreme sports holidays, and in summer is popular for its outdoor activities as well as the authenticity of its traditions and lifestyle. Nestled between the mountains of the

Valle Sabbia valley and the PreAlps, it lies on the border with the Trentino region and is caressed by a constant breeze that makes it an ideal choice for sailing, surfing and kitesurfing. It can also boast numerous campsites and the mountains are an ideal training ground for those who love mountain biking, rock climbing, paragliding, canyoning and fun activities. www.visitbrescia.it
