This project, located in Kensington, MD, called for an office design for the New Building Institute East Headquarters. The building is called ECO-Core due to the central promenade that serves as the heart to the building and is emphasized by a solar umbrella. The design adheres to NBI’s mission with design elements that aim to educate the public and by incorporating various sustainable methods with a goal of trying to reach net zero.

PRECEDENT ANALYSIS: STATUE OF LIBERTY MUSEUM

02 Center for Urban Ecology This project located on the corner of MacArthur Blvd.and Elliot Pl. in Washington, DC called for a new design for the Center of Urban Ecology. Originally titled “Building within a Landscape”, the project called for a response to the existing site, by changing the topography and responding the existing building on site. This design is loosely based on the Statue of Liberty museum on Liberty Island as it has a strong relationship between building and site. The design has education spaces located inside the building and outdoors with various exhibit spaces where people can gather. The site also incorporates a greenhouse.

03 Dwelling in the City This project located on the corner of Swann St NW and 14th St NW in Washington, DC called for a design of an apartment complex. This apartment complex also incorporated commercial spaces on the ground floor to fit the urban context of DC. The complex serves as affordable housing for self sufficient seniors and families with ample outdoor and communal spaces to promote the idea of community. The complex provides two separate stories of community spaces where one story acts as a work/play space for both kids and adults and the other is an outdoor grilling courtyard where families can spend time together. The work/play space allows both the adults and kids to escape the close proximity that are attached to the apartment units. These large community spaces allow the residents to build a community by sharing spaces and building relationships with each other. This apartment complex emphasizes the needs of the residents within the apartment complex through the amenities and spaces offered by catering to efficiency and accessibility for the residents. More specifically the outdoor garden allows for the seniors to be proactive.

04 Story District The Story District project called for a new venue that facilitates the creation and dissemination of stories in a variety of formats. The design of the venue promotes the vision of the company which “values storytelling as a space for people to listen and be heard, connect with others, embrace different perspectives, examine their own lives, and explore what it means to be human”. Story District’s new facility will have more community spaces attached to its program to enable different groups to interact with each other and gain different perspectives from what they see and hear around them. This is adjacent to the main purpose of the program that the story district provides as there are multiple event spaces for those who want to share their stories and also various spaces for the visitors to gather so that they are able to communicate each other’s experiences with each other and start conversations about the stories they just heard.

This project called for a music library to be constructed within the U street neighborhood and it will focus on archiving vintage sheet music, recordings, and new/rare music books. To facilitate the design of the library the theme that was focused on was overlapping, which is an important aspect of music in itself. The Music Library has specific features and physical accents that help create a tranquil and unified experience for all the musicians and music educators. As all the visitors have an interest to gain knowledge in the music world, they should be able to communicate within the open spaces and be able to view beautiful scenery permited with the glass curtain wall as way to inspire and influence new compositions.

06 Facade Redesign This project called for us to design a vertical surface of a building in context. The design was for a new facade for a commercial infill space on M Street in Georgetown located in Washington, DC. To help facilitate the design of the facade the building’s function served as a bakery.

07 Miscellaneous A collection of projects I have worked on over the years, that include not only projects that have research analyses done but also personal art projects that span various mediums.

A redesign project for the restaurant, ‘Gertrude’s’, now named MONSTRO, due to its influence from Piet Mondrian’s GRID GRID‘Mondrian Compositions’. 02 Commercial Railing Design

This project was completed during a Interior Architecture course, where I was assigned to analyze and produce a design vision for a prototype guardrail and handrail. To achieve a unique solution and design response for a public location, the design is based on biomimicry and uses the DNA of a leaf as inspiration.

03 Analysis on Sustainable Strategies The NZDC Headquarters, completed during my final undergraduate studio, main function was to educate the local community on sustainable strategies and to operate as an office space for an organization, called Net Zero DC. This project aimed to create a long-lasting impression of what sustainability could look like as buildings strive to achieve net zero energy usage, hence the name NZDC (located in Columbia Heights, D.C.).
