Welcome from the Principal Dear children, families and colleagues, It is hard to remember that this year has been far more than the past 15 weeks of distance learning. When I think back to September 2019 when we opened our doors to children, staff and families old and new, it seems like another life! Everything we knew, and possibly took for granted has changed, but I feel that our community was built to withstand such turmoil, having been built on strong foundations of collaboration, mutual respect, high expectations and care. When I reflect on the year, I think an acrostic poem can illustrate the skills and values we have developed and reinforced over the year! Amazing Adaptability - we have changed the way we work and learn dynamically, with your support and feedback. Strength - we have all had some really tough days- but we have an amazing community who support us when we need it. Passionate people - our team never fails to amaze me at the creativity and drive they show in order to improve outcomes for your children. Endless energy - your children give us the inspiration to dig deeper and go that extra mile to continue to improve their learning experience. New!- we are always changing and adapting, and we are looking forward to welcoming you all back to a new year and new ways of working, keeping community, learning and fun at the centre of everything we do. As a school we are so very fortunate that we have built a resilient and adaptable learning community; we have needed to draw on all our reserves of creativity and energy to adapt to the challenges we have faced this year.We are all immensely proud and thankful for your trust, support and feedback; we have tackled this together and have all come out braver, wiser and more thankful as a result. We are excited about the plans for the coming academic year; our school continues to grow and go from strength to strength. We look forward to seeing you all again in September, when we also welcome new families into our positive, friendly and organised school. Have a wonderful summer and see you soon!

Welcome from the Head of Primary

I can hardly believe it is the end of our third year at Aspen Heights already. I always enjoy writing my piece for the yearbook as it gives me the opportunity to reflect and reminisce about the year we have had. This year in particular has been a very different one by shifting our learning to distance learning. We pride ourselves at Aspen Heights on how collaborative and adaptable we are as a school community. This includes staff, children and parents. We have definitely all achieved great things together this year and have strived to make it another successful, fun and engaging year of learning. I really enjoyed all of our community events and we were lucky to have had the opportunity to celebrate National Day and International Day together in school. I love seeing how enthusiastic the children are in relaying facts about their country and sharing the delicious food they have prepared. I am always overwhelmed with the support of our families as well as their participation in many family workshops and fun events, such as Family Fun Facts. Our theme weeks were another highlight such as Virtual Visits Week and Drama Workshop Week. Both of which happened during our distance learning programme but we still achieved our goal of fun, meaningful and engaging learning. We would not be able to achieve all of this without our wonderful teaching staff and support staff who go above and beyond for our children. I thank everybody for being part of our amazing Aspen community and wish you a lovely summer. I look forward to what next year will bring.

Welcome from the Head of Secondary

As we come to the end of the first year of our secondary department at Aspen Heights British School I am very proud that we have had a successful year. It gives me great pleasure to say that we have achieved our initial goals. We have offered a hugely personalised learning experience for all of our students and have built a wonderful community within our Aspen family. We offer a diverse range of activities both inside and outside the classroom to ensure each student experiences a holistic education to help them find their place in the world. We are committed to high standards of academic achievement, whilst providing excellent pastoral care underpinned by our 4C’s. We believe that working together we will ensure that our students will be happy and successful in all that they do. My fondest memory of the year is from our Super Amazing Learning Day back in November. This was the day that we launched our Hydroponics greenhouse. We did this through a Mantle of the Expert approach around the real world problem of ‘How does food in the UAE get to the vegetable market?’. We had five amazing activities from planting our seeds, to creating promotional videos and designing menus. This day was just the start of our journey. All children planted many more seeds over the course of the year and tended to them each week through our golden time programme. This culminated in a huge harvest in February, where we harvested 58 lettuces, 16 cucumbers and 5 courgettes. Members of our Student Council helped to distribute our produce during a community event, where we received a charitable donation in return for the Red Crescent charity. As with all that we do at Aspen Heights, we have embraced distance learning education and made it into a purposeful and academically demanding experience for our young people, whilst keeping their well-being at the forefront of our minds. Looking ahead to the next academic year I am excited to see what we can achieve next year! Thank you to everyone for your support in making our inaugural year in secondary a happy and successful one. Wishing you all a well deserved restful summer.

Welcome from the Head of Inclusion 2019-20 will be remembered as a year of two halves; in school learning and e-learning. As Head of Inclusion, I am very proud of how the children and the Inclusion team have handled both. The team has grown in size with the school and we have added an individual class, Oasis Class, for children with additional educational needs. The Inclusion department has had fantastic support from our parents; their dedication to their children’s learning has enabled us to carry on our individual and group support sessions throughout the e-learning period. For this, I thank them very much. Our Oasis Class opened in September 2019. The class was established for children with additional educational needs who are not yet ready for the mainstream classroom. It is the first such class to be set up in an international school in Abu Dhabi and we hope that it’s success will encourage many other schools to follow suit. Several of our Oasis children had just started attending mainstream classes when we had to enter the e-learning phase, however I am confident that these children will very quickly progress to the mainstream once they return to school. All in all, a very good year for the Inclusion department. Thank you to everyone who has supported us.

Helena Francis Head of Inclusion

We joined the Inclusion team in Aspen Heights this year and it has brought us to a new feeling of learning and fulfilled experiences. Our team has been very active throughout the year, working from FS to KS3, full of determination to achieve its goal of supporting the children’s learning. We are very grateful to parents and teachers for their support. When our sessions shifted online, we did not allow it to affect the fun-filled lessons that we prepared for every child. The 4C’s of Aspen Heights British School helped solve the roller coaster experience of our planning and strategies. Overall, this year has been a successful one with great experiences and wonderful memories. Joanne Salvamante, Precious Palaganas and Claudette Genova Inclusion TAs

Nursery - Butterflies This year has been a most unusual year for all. It started off well in September with the children quickly settling into their new routines and building new relationships in the class. As Ms Donna and I got to know the children we were better able to plan fun activities that we knew they would enjoy. These activities included planting seeds to watch them grow, making porridge for the three bears and building aeroplanes with big construction materials. The children made amazing progress in all areas and Ms Donna and I are very proud of them. My favourite day this year has been International day. I was so pleased at how the teachers and parents worked together to provide such a fun and educational day for all the families. We then all had to quickly adapt to e-learning and all of the new challenges that came with that. We are very grateful to all of the parents who have worked so hard to make sure the children are still on track and progressing. Thank you for an amazing year Butterflies you all make me so proud!

Miss McCluskey - Nursery Butterflies Teacher

I can’t believe how fast this school year has gone by. It may be an unusual year for all of us, and yet we have had an amazing year full of fun and learning. Miss McCluskey and I enjoyed watching you grow, play and learn. I hope you will continue to enjoy school with the same excitement and love for learning that you have now. Keep making good choices. Thank you Butterflies for an amazing year. We are so proud of you and good luck for next school year. Fly high Butterflies!

Nursery - Geckoes It has been my pleasure to be the class teacher of Geckoes class this year. It has been a very unusual year for everyone. From everything that has happened in recent times I believe it demonstrates just how adaptable and resilient young children are today. The children have all made beautiful memories during their time in school and I am so grateful to have been a part of their journey. Some of my favourite memories include, making porridge together, playing hide and seek in the playground and reading different stories each day. Each child has worked hard this year and in return have developed their self-confidence and self-esteem whilst making some lovely friendships along the way. They have each shown kindness and patience to one another other whilst having fun and learning. Geckoes class, from your time in the classroom to engaging with our e-learning, you all have been truly amazing. Myself and Ms Heba wish you all the very best moving forward on your next steps.

Miss Kim - Nursery Geckoes Teacher

I am glad I was your teacher, I can’t believe the end is here.It has been a joy and a pleasure teaching all of you, we have watched you work, learn, and say ‘I CAN’. Remember to make good choices in life, and you will have good consequences. The world is yours and you are a special person. Good luck next year.

Nursery - Hedgehogs I have absolutely loved being the Hedgehog Class teacher this year, both in class and online. The class is made up of amazing personalities who all look out for each other every day. Every day was different in the Hedgehog Class, learning new things and experimenting with our learning. The Hedgehog’s had such curiosity and a love for learning which made every day interesting and exciting. We had so many fun and exciting days together such as the Teddy Bear’s picnic, International day, National day, sports day and so much more. Everybody has made so much progress throughout the year and I am so proud of each and every member of the class. The class was particularly creative and loved to sing, dance and create pictures to share with their friends. The Hedgehogs made a huge effort to transition to e-learning and with their help we made it a success. I am going to miss the amazing Hedgehog class but I want to thank them for working so hard all year and I wish them all the best for FS2.

Miss Morris - Nursery Headgehogs Teacher

It has been an amazing year watching you Hedgehog’s grow. The year has come and gone so quickly. I am so excited for your future and I want nothing but the very best for you in years to come. Nursery - Mice What a fantastic year it has been for the Mice Class. Miss Carmela and myself were given the most incredible Nursery class, full of enthusiastic, energetic and amazing children. We had so much fun learning and creating the best memories. On the playground, on stage as well as in the classroom, we explored and investigated together. I loved the morning smiles and hugs I would get and the progress that was made in such a short time. Our Learning journey folders showed how enthusiastic our class were, proud of the pieces of work they produced. Singing, dancing and moving was a big part of our daily routine. The children loved participating in Squiggle while we wiggle and Marvellous Maths lessons. Independence was quickly learnt, from washing their hands to choosing their own resources in the classroom. Every child knew where each resource belong and tidied up accordingly. Our classroom was full of happy chatter, friendships and a buzzing atmosphere. Photographs filled the walls of all the happy experiences that were created through the year. Most of the children loved the Home Corner and dressing up too. A great highlight for me was when every child was able to plant some flowers at the entrance to our school, playing games in the morning like Bug in a Rug and the enjoyment of our ‘Class Den’. Developing our Theatre outside was so much fun and all children embraced this area. Unfortunately, something that no one had ever experienced before happened, lockdown. This meant our amazing children could not learn alongside their friends and teachers, however, these amazing little children did not stop learning. They embraced e-learning, circle times and have progressed well at home. Mice Class this year have really creeped into my heart and I wish we were able to spend more time at school together. I can not wait to see you progress even further in FS2. I will miss you, but I will always be ready to hear about the amazing learning you are doing next year. Thank you Mice class for being so awesome!

Miss Manica - Nursery Mice Teacher

This year with Mice class has been so enjoyable. Miss Manica and myself work as a great team to ensure amazing progress is being made by every child. We both feel a happy, safe and fun classroom is the best environment for children to learn in. We have laughed and learnt and discovered a great love of stories together. I would like to wish all of the children in Mice class. Good luck in FS2.

FS2 Bulbuls This has been an amazing and interesting year for Bulbuls class. Ms Racquel and I have been privileged to teach all of these incredible children, watching you grow in ability and confidence and supporting you to become independent people. We have all laughed together and developed a love of learning through a variety of indoor and outdoor activities. With the children, we have created a welcoming learning environment where all the children were flourishing. We have had so much fun making playdough, trying different foods, building, making and playing in our outdoor areas. National Day and our trip to Saadiyat Beach were huge highlights where we all got to experience new things together. It was such a shame that our year in school was cut short but it has been inspiring to see how our class have pulled together and enjoyed showing each other what we are learning in our own homes. Our weekly circle times have brought real joy to everybody’s week and it has been fantastic to see all of you showing each other what you have been doing. Even with all of this year’s difficulties, I am so proud of what you have accomplished. You have all improved your maths, reading, writing and physical skills but just as importantly you are kind children who can act independently and be caring for all your loved ones.

Miss Riley- FS2 Bulbuls Teacher It has been an usual year for all of us and yet we had an amazing year watching each and everyone of you grow. The year has come and gone so quickly. I can not believe the end is already here. Miss Riley and I are so proud and impressed with your amazing learning. Thank you Bulbuls for your hard work and good luck for the next school year. And to Miss Riley thank you for your support and sharing your knowledge to me.

FS2 Doves This has been my first year teaching at Aspen Heights and what an amazing year it has been with FS2 Doves class. I am so proud of each and everyone of you for the tremendous progress you have all made. It has been lovely to watch you all grow and learn so much. I have especially enjoyed watching the wonderful friendships flourish with one another. Throughout the year we have been very lucky to have experienced so many fun activities and trips together; my favourite being our trip to Saadiyat beach to learn about the damage that ‘nurdles’ can do to sea creatures. It was amazing to learn something new with you all. More recently I have felt incredibly proud with how much enthusiasm you have shown towards e-learning. Our virtual trip to the moon was very exciting and I was so impressed with how you were all able to imagine what it would be like on the moon. I hope you all have wonderful memories from your year in FS2 and I wish you all the best for Year One. Mrs Harris - FS2 Doves Teacher

I am so grateful to have been a part of the Aspen Heights family and Dove class this year. Over the year the FS2 Doves have worked extremely hard to become independent thinkers. Seeing their progress in all subjects has made me feel very proud. I wish FS2 Doves lots of luck for the next year.

FS2 Ducks I have had the most amazing year with FS2 Ducks. We have achieved so much in such a short space of time and had so much fun. I loved our outdoor learning this year, including our trips to Saadiyaat Beach and Umm al Emirat Park. This is where I have seen our learning come to life and watched you show off your skills and knowledge that we have learnt back in school. I have also loved watching you all perform in our school shows on the big stage where you were huge performers and showed off your talent for singing and dancing! Each and every child in Ducks has their very own unique personality that together has made our classroom an amazing place to be. Since the beginning of the year to now, I have watched you all grow and learn and I have loved being a part of your journey. You are all now such independant and resilient learners with such enthusiasm to try new experiences and find out about the world. We have explored, challenged, learnt and laughed our way through the year and I have enjoyed every minute as your teacher. I know the children have made amazing friends and built relationships that will continue to grow, they have learnt skills and memories that will last a lifetime.

Miss Ribbens - FS2 Ducks Teacher FS2 Ducks is the most amazing class, for the few months that I was with you I’ve seen you grow and learn and be independent, we are so proud of you. I hope you dont forget everything we’ve taught you and congratulations to all of you going to year 1 next year. We will miss you all!

FS2 Pipits It has been a great pleasure to be the teacher of FS2 Pipits this year. The children have impressed me with their amazing progress, great attitude towards learning and resiliance to change. The children of Pipit Class have super personalities and our year has been full of fun, laughter and excitement. We have particularly enjoyed growing our own plants, creating elaborate role play games and being active outside. The children have shown a sense of wonder in everything new we have explored. I am very proud of the Pipits Class and I wish them all the best as they move on to Year One.

Miss Quick - FS2 Pipits Teacher

This is my first year working at Aspen Heights and I am beyond grateful for the amazing experience especially with the fun filled class of FS2 Pipits. I am so happy to see how the children are always engaged in learning and showing their progress everyday. They have made us so proud of how they work independently and try their best during all tasks. I will always treasure this school year with them and I am sure that they are ready for Year One. FS2 Sparrows It has been a fantastic year for the Sparrows class. It was my first year teaching in the UAE and at Aspen Heights, and I was so happy to be placed with the most special class I have ever had. We all started off as shy and quiet individuals, which have grown into a group of confident friends. Every day we spent time getting to know each other through our circle time, we did some singing and dancing too! Miss Juliet is always there to help us with whatever we need, she is just amazing! Our favourite time of the day is free flow where we get to play outside and explore the world around us, with all of our Nursery and FS2 friends. Our favourite theme and story this year was The Gruffalo! We spent weeks pretending to be big, scary Gruffalo’s, and learning how to make Gruffalo crumble. We’ve learnt to experience school in a new way with our E-Learning, and have all adapted so well. It has been so much fun doing activities at home with the family, and then sending videos for our teacher to see. What a whirlwind year it has been, and wow, has it been fun!

Miss Buckley - FS2 Sparrows Teacher

The year is almost over, I can’t believe how fast this school year has gone by. I have enjoyed watching you play, learn and grow. I am so proud to have been a part of your learning this school year. I hope that you will continue to enjoy school with excitement, and love for learning that you have now. Miss Buckley and I are so proud of all our confident Sparrows, you will always remain in our hearts. Good luck for next year to all of you. Thank you so much for this year, Miss Buckley.

Oasis Class Oasis Class opened in September with Ms Lorna as Class Teacher and Ms Ruth as TA. What a busy term that was, settling in, getting to know each other, meeting Priya and Tammy from Kids First, National Day celebrations and so much more. Sadly, Ms Lorna had to return to the UK but I had the pleasure of replacing her. I thoroughly enjoyed working with the children of Oasis Class and have so many memories! My favourite time of the day was when we were outside in the FS playground and had the whole area to ourselves. It was wonderful watching the freedom of movement, how each child would enjoy their favourite thing/ toy/area. Mohammed, Obaid and Johan loved playing in the sand, but most of all the water… oh my, there was so much laughter and smiles when we put bubbles in it!!! Alisia loved playing with the pompoms, Erik and Adbulla raced around the track on the bikes and tricycles, as did Mido – who also loved climbing in, out, over and through the big red tunnel! We had lots of fun in class too. We sang, painted, counted, learnt new sounds and stretched our maths brains, as well as having lots of other fun experiences! Then we moved into our E-learning day and something we all thought would be temporary has, however, taken us to here, the end of the year. Online learning took a bit of getting used to for everybody, but I have to say it has been a pleasure to watch the children’s knowledge grow in such unnatural circumstances. Ms Ruth and I have shared some wonderful learning experiences with Oasis Class which I am both proud and privileged to have been a part of!

Miss Tammy Marsh - Oasis Teacher The best moments of my career started when I joined Aspen Heights school to work with the children in Oasis Class. The children have shown remarkable progress and notable improvements, making their parents, Ms Lorna, Ms Tammy and myself very grateful. I love working with you all. I’m looking forward to gaining even more experience and improving my skills as we move forward.
