WHAT IS DEVISED THEATER? In the world of modern theatre practice, the term “devised theatre” is often heard, but for many is an elusive concept to define. At its core, “devising” is a process of theatre-making where the creation of a production is the responsibility of a group of diverse creative artists, rather than seen through the lens of a central playwright and/ or director. This allows for everyone in the room to have a voice, whether you are predominantly an actor, a technician, a stage manager, or a designer. There is a special freedom (and terror) in creating a production from scratch—if you don’t have a script, you don’t have a safety net—so everyone has to have explicit and implicit trust in everyone else. This process began as a class where myself, Julie Dixon, and 17 students began discussing everything from the meaning of horror and fear, the history of horror in film and on the stage, and eventually, what scared us all personally. These discussions gave way to a workshop process where students wrote, created, choreographed, and developed a series of ideas that would eventually become the foundation of the work that you will watch onstage tonight. Along the way, other voices, such as fight choreography and the various disciplines of design and technology, joined the conversation via our talented faculty and staff in the department. It was a long, difficult, and labor-intensive semester for all involved, but we are all proud of this production and we hope that you enjoy an evening with Horror Vaudeville! --Chris Berchild
