In the world of modern theatre practice, the term “devised theatre” is often heard, but for many is an elusive concept to define. At its core, “devising” is a process of theatremaking where the creation of a production is the responsibility of a group of diverse creative artists, rather than seen through the lens of a central playwright and/or director. This allows for everyone in the room to have a voice, whether you are predominantly an actor, a technician, a stage manager, or a designer. In fall 2023, students in the THTR 456: Devised Theater Practicum came together with the intention of creating something new. With both seniors and juniors, the class had students interested in acting, costumes, dance, directing, playwriting, props, scenery, sound, stage management, technical theater, and theater administration. Through exploration of a variety of topics, the class was drawn to the prevalence of true crime as entertainment—through television, podcasts, TikTok, and social media. The class pondered, why is society drawn to crime as a form of entertainment? What does it say about a society where the worst of humanity is put on display for millions to watch/listen to pain? How are we a product of culture that relives trauma as a form of emotional rubbernecking? What behavioral and social choices does this exposure to suffering offer us? These ideas further led the class down several conceptual and theatrical rabbit-holes, eventually leading to the production that you see onstage today.
