Chris Berchild Artistic Director & Chairperson, Department of Theater
This season is dedicated to Lew Hackleman for his years of service to Indiana State University, the Department of Theater, and Crossroads Repertory Theatre from 1968-2004.
In 1968, Lew became a designer and technical director at ISU and joined the staff of Indiana State University Summer Theatre, later known as ISU SummerStage and Crossroads Repertory Theatre. Lew became the director of the Theatre Summer Honors program, forging meaningful connections with Indiana’s high school drama teachers and attracting generations of students to ISU's theater department.
Lew Hackleman 1938-2024
Lew directed and acted in numerous plays throughout his career, but one of his most cherished performances was in 1990 at the Kennedy Center, portraying Eldon in DOWNWINDER DANCE, a play written by his friend and department chair, Gary Stewart. He later served as interim chair of the Department of Theater and artistic director of ISU SummerStage.
After 38 years of service, Lew retired from ISU on December 18, 2004, having designed scenery for approximately 40 productions, directed nearly 60 plays, and taught in all disciplines of theatre except costume design. Even after retirement, Lew continued to act and direct professionally with Crossroads Repertory Theatre and others. In May 2023, he returned to Community Theatre of Terre Haute to appear in SHE LOVES ME, revisiting the first play he worked on at ISU in 1966.
To celebrate and honor the lives of Lew and Kathy Hackleman, the Lew and Kathy Hackleman Scholarship was established by Chris Schellenberg, and Kim and Hal Hackleman. This scholarship supports a student returning for their sophomore year who has given their time and talent to the Indiana State University Department of Theater during their freshman year.
To honor Lew's legacy, visit https://givetoindianastate.org. Under “Designation,” select “Other” from the drop-down menu and then type in “Lew and Kathy Hackleman Scholarship” and complete the rest of the online form. Actor. Designer. Director. Educator. Colleague. Friend.

If you’ve watched a show or a movie, or seen a play or musical, or played a game, or read a book from the last 86 years, there’s a really good chance that you’ve encountered THE WIZARD OF OZ in some way, at least in quote form, without even realizing it. L. Frank Baum’s book-turned-movie-turned-musical is a rich and vibrantly colored tale of danger, friendship, and finding your way home that has inspired countless generations since 1900. That inspiration has spurred creatives to insert quotes from the book and film into their own work as a nod to the original or to connect their themes with those found in Oz.
It should be no surprise that the enchanting songs of Oz have inspired countless musicians. Elton John and Bernie Taupin’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”, from the 1973 album of the same name, repeatedly references Wizard in its lyrics and themes. The narrator, tired of their life of fame and fortune, longs (like Dorothy) to return to their simpler life “on the farm”. “Old Yellow Bricks” by English rock band Arctic Monkeys uses Wizard’s story as an allegory for wanting to escape a boring life. Its ending line, “But Dorothy was right though”, alludes to the character’s famous quote, “There’s no place like home”. A frame from the 1939 film was used by Electric Light Orchestra for their album ELDORADO (1974). The frame used depicts the moment the Wicked Witch attempts to grab Dorothy’s ruby slippers and the slippers’ magical defense against her.
Oz has found its way into the video gaming world as well. SUPER MARIO 64 (1996) contains a level titled “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” that has the player, appropriately, race around atop a rainbow track. The title of the level is a reference to the song made famous by Judy Garland’s Dorothy in the 1939 film. The main antagonist of BANJO-KAZOOIE (1998), Gruntilda, was modeled on the appearance of the Wicked Witch from the 1939 film. Furthermore her sister, Brentilda, was designed in appearance and personality on Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. Some more games that reference Baum’s world include COFFEE CRISIS (2017), CODE NAME: S.T.E.A.M. (2015), and FALLOUT 4 (2015).
Similarly, the world over the rainbow has also remained in the minds of animators. After Yzma turns Kuzco into a llama in THE EMPEROR'S NEW GROOVE (2000), he and his friend, Pacha, break into Yzma’s lair to find the potion that will turn Kuzco back to normal. Yzma’s potions are organized on shelves next to the symbol for what they turn the drinker into; Pacha reads three of these, one each for lions, tigers, and bears, but finds the human potion missing. That potion is in Yzma’s grasp, who reveals herself hiding in the shadows on the other side of the room. She finishes the Oz homage with a sly, “Oh my!”
THE SIMPSONS has quoted the 1939 film several times throughout the show's history. In “Lisa’s Rival” (1994) after his pile of sugar has been rained on, Homer cries out (à la the Wicked Witch): "I'm melting! Melting! Oh, what a world!" And, in “Bart Gets Hit by a Car” (1991), Dorothy is imitated by the titular Simpson when he wakes up in the hospital. Bart quotes her when talking to his family, saying: “But you were there, and you, and you.” The list of references to Oz in animation goes on. Here are a few more Oz references in animation:
SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS (“Hocus Pocus”), RUGRATS (“No Place Like Home”), BATMAN BEYOND (“The Eggbaby”), PHINEAS AND FERB (“The Wizard of Odd”), and many, many more.
Callbacks to Oz are not saved just for songs, the stage, or the screen; they abound in books. R.L. Stine’s INTO THE TWISTER OF TERROR (1999) is essentially a whole-plot reference to the 1939 film–it recreates and parodies the original plot because of audiences’ familiarity with it, making it easier for the reader to follow along. Danielle Paige’s dark novel DOROTHY MUST DIE (2014) flips the 1939 film’s plot on its head for a modern young adult reader, highlighting how enduring Oz’s popularity is with each generation.
SPELLED (2015) by Betsy Schow again flips the premise of Fleming’s film, this time focusing on a princess from Oz named Dorthea who must save her kingdom. Finally, Gregory Maguire’s novel WICKED (1995) was such a hit, it was adapted into a Tony-winning Broadway show (2003) and then adapted for the big screen (Part 1, 2024 and Part 2, 2025) in only 20 years. It, like Baum’s 1900 novel, spawned intense adoration among readers and fans.
The impact of Fleming's 1939 adaptation on the film industry is diverse and wide-ranging. After being trapped in the terrifying Sid’s house in TOY STORY (1995), Woody runs toward the stairs and repeats Dorothy’s famous phrase (“There’s no place like home…”) over and over to himself while attempting to escape. And at the end of the comedy TOP SECRET! (1984), while boarding a plane and making her farewells, Hillary, the protagonist, turns and hugs a man dressed as the 1939 Scarecrow. As she does, she tearfully recites Dorothy’s same goodbye to her companion before leaving Oz: “I’ll miss you most of all.” Hillary then boards her flight, the credits roll, and nobody bats an eye at the man in full Oz-tume.
GOOD MORNING, VIETNAM (1987) contains several famous scenes that reference the 1939 movie. In another example, when the heroes of A NEW HOPE (1977) arrive on the Death Star to rescue Leia, they acquire stormtrooper armor to conceal their identities. This is similar to what Dorothy’s friends do after she is captured by the Wicked Witch. Chewbacca and C-3PO can be seen as stand-ins for Lion and Tin Man, respectively. Other films that reference Oz include THE AVENGERS (2012), GREMLINS (1984), JUMANJI (1995), and so many more.
Fans seeking more immersion in the wonderful world of Oz need not be disappointed, for creators have been peppering their own work with references, quotes, and allusions to Baum’s book and Fleming’s film since they were released. Oz has arguably become almost as large as Middle-Earth or Narnia. Regardless of the medium, references to that faraway land are everywhere, from the screen to the page and everything in between.
