This season, we have put together a variety of productions, opening up ample opportunity for members of the Wabash Valley community to come and enjoy the arts.
Kicking off our 2024 summer season is a fresh take on the works of William Shakespeare. Timothy Mooney’s LOT O’ SHAKESPEARE will have audiences captivated by the breathtaking performances of Shakespeare’s most moving works while also being invested in the engaging game of Bingo! Play along with both the audience and the actor to select monologues and soliloquies—and you never know what you may win!
Our second show, PRINCESS PIGFACE, is a magical tale for both children and adults to enjoy. Written by ISU alumnus Tommy Jamerson, this fairytale about true beauty being found within is sure to charm everyone who sees it. With its tongue-in-cheek jokes, rousingly royal characters, and a brand-new, neverbefore-seen ending, this play is a must-see this summer!
Finally, bring yourself and everyone you know to come and see the world’s most beloved sponge make a big splash in THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL! This musical is chock-full of nautical nonsense and jumping jellyfish that will delight and enchant every viewer. Watch as SpongeBob and his Bikini Bottom buddies work to save their undersea world from an erupting volcano. With catchy tunes (written by some of your favorite bands and musical stars) and lovable characters, this show will make waves with audiences young and old!
Thank you for supporting live theatre and the arts in the Terre Haute community. We at CRT are grateful for your patronage and can’t wait to see you this summer.
So please kick back and enjoy the show at Crossroads Repertory Theatre!

Fairytales were made to be adapted. Many people’s introductions to the most well-known fairytales (Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, The Little Mermaid, etc.) come by way of Disney movies, animated adaptations of the original European tales. In recent years, there has been some discussion about whether fairytales are obligated to remain true to the culture of their source material. However, oftentimes even the source material did not remain true to their source material, resulting in a tangled mess of originality and no clear answer to the true origins of many of our favorite stories.
A handful of literary giants dominant the fairytale landscape. Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm (better known as the Brothers Grimm) were German academics made famous for publishing Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, The Frog Prince, and many, many more. Their first collection of folktales, Kinder-und Hausmarchen (Children’s and Household Tales), was released in 1812. but the origins of their stories date back centuries before. The nineteenth century saw the rise of Romanticism—an idyllic nostalgia for the past and a desire for a national identity—and the Brothers Grimm’s collection of fairytales was an intentional step towards bringing together disparate nation states into a unified German identity. They gathered folktales from cultures throughout the world—Central Europe, France, Greece, and Spain all the way to Korea, Vietnam, and China—and imbued them with German values to become a narrative that would work towards unifying their nation.
The Brothers Grimm did not write their own stories; they adapted what was already being told. The earliest known version of Cinderella, for example, comes from the Ancient Greeks and tells the story of a maid whose slipper was stolen by an eagle and dropped in front of the king. On seeing the slipper, the king fell madly in love with the idea of its owner and sent servants all throughout the land to find the maid before making her his wife. A Chinese version from the ninth century recounts the story of a girl abused by her stepmother, mentored by a fish who has the reincarnated soul of her deceased mother, and loses her shoe at a festival which leads to the king finding the shoe and falling in love with her. The seventeenth-century French author, Charles Perrault, was one of the first writers to publish Cinderella (as Cendrillon) along with versions of Little Red Riding Hood (Le Petit Chaperon Rouge), Sleeping Beauty (La Belle Au Bois Dormant), and many other fairytales which were adapted by the Brothers Grimm more than one hundred years later.
So, it is fitting that Indiana State University alumnus, Tommy Jamerson (Theater, class of 2008), would join the ranks of the Brothers Grimm and Charles Perrault by adapting the Irish fairytale The Hero and the Bride into Princess Pigface. The original tale stars Oisin, the greatest poet of the Fenian Cycle of Irish mythology. Similarly to figures such as Heracles or Perseus in Greek mythology, Oisin appears in many Irish legends that recount his lengthy list of heroic exploits. For his American audience, however, Tommy Jamerson removes that character from the larger canon of deeds, changes the focus from the Hero to the Princess, and employs unique storytelling techniques to tell the ancient fairytale in new and exciting ways.
But this production in particular attests to the mutable nature of fairytales. After first publishing Princess Pigface over a decade ago, Tommy Jamerson revisited his script after interest from Crossroads Repertory Theatre. Jamerson felt that parts of the play no longer reflected the emphasis of stories that he wanted to tell and revised the script to better share those narratives. Because fairytales are like sponges (don’t forget to see The SpongeBob Musical!), Princess Pigface is able to change and grow, continuing to mirror the ever-evolving audiences that have the opportunity to experience it.

What do Steven Tyler, John Legend, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, and They Might Be Giants have in common? If you were to say that they are all Grammy winners, you would be correct. But they also share another common connection: each of them was nominated for a Tony Award for their collaboration on The SpongeBob Musical. The underwater musical adventure, which opened on Broadway in 2017, features songs written by nineteen artists and in genres ranging from pop to country to classic showtunes. Rather than feeling like a random hodgepodge of musical styles, The SpongeBob Musical comes off as an intentional hodgepodge of musical styles as it engages in a hallmark technique of postmodernism: the pastiche.
Pastiche, a concept central to postmodernism, involves the blending and re-contextualizing of various styles and genres, often paying homage to or playfully imitating them without a singular commitment to any one aesthetic. Through mixing musical styles, cultural references, and narrative structures, The SpongeBob Musical’s pastiche creates a theatrical experience that is as layered and multifaceted as the concept itself.
As mentioned above, one of the most striking aspects of The SpongeBob Musical is its diverse soundtrack. Unlike traditional musicals that typically stick to a cohesive musical style, The SpongeBob Musicalincorporates pop music, rock music, gospel music, and many, many, many more. This eclecticism is a quintessential aspect of pastiche, reflecting its playful and pluralistic approach to art and culture. Each musical artist contributes their unique sound to the production, paying tribute to their musical tradition while also defying conventional genre boundaries and efforts to define what ‘kind’ of musical SpongeBob is.
The SpongeBob Musicalis similarly full of cultural references that serve as nods to both contemporary and classical works, another characteristic of postmodern pastiche. These references are woven into the fabric of the musical, often in a playful or subversive manner. For example, when Squidward performs a tap dance number reminiscent of classic
Broadway, his personality and movements parody the traditional archetype of the grumpy, overlooked artist. This interplay between a glitzy showtune and a dour performer exemplifies pastiche, as it both acknowledges and pokes fun at the source material.
Beyond moments of pastiche, the musical’s narrative structure itself is a compilation of familiar tropes and themes from various genres. The plot borrows elements from disaster films, hero’s journeys narratives, and even contemporary social commentaries on community-building and resilience. By combining these disparate elements, The SpongeBob Musical creates a new narrative that is more than the sum of its parts, embodying the postmodern tendency to blend and remix cultural artifacts to create something fresh and new.
Just like how I am pretending to talk to you right now, The SpongeBob Musical has moments of iconic fourth wall breaks by having characters interact with the theatrical elements outside the world of the story. Fourth wall breaks disrupt the traditional narrative flow by calling attention to the fact that the audience is, in fact, watching a play. This self-referential approach is a key feature of postmodernism as it blurs the line between fiction and reality and encourages the audience to reflect on the techniques of performance and storytelling.
I know, I know, when you opened up the program for The SpongeBob Musical, you were probably a little disappointed to see a blurb about postmodern aesthetics. But it is my hope that this note has helped highlight how pastiche can transform a beloved animated series into a rich, multifaceted theatrical experience. In doing so, the musical not only pays tribute to a wide range of cultural influences but also invites You the Audience to engage with them in new and unexpected ways. The innovative playfulness of SpongeBob’s approach underscores the power of pastiche to breathe new life into familiar narratives (or perhaps blow new bubbles), making the world of The SpongeBob Musical a compelling example of postmodern creativity.
