Fatigue had definitely made its presence felt. Through it all, however, the Fresno City C o l l e g e m e n ’s b a s k e t b a l l players strengthened their bond and their confidence in themselves and each other.

And so, it was only fitting that the Rams went into the State Championship game knowing the victory was theirs. They knew they had worked too hard and come too far to lose in the end.

“I would have bet the farm on it,” said head coach, Ed Madec.

Freshmen guard, Alex Perez, was just as confident. “If we played Yuba 10 times, we would have beaten them 10 times out of 10,” he said. Perez was named tournament MVP with 17 points.

The challenge for the Rams was to stay hungry at all times.

game against Yuba College, the chip turned to a boulder. The No. 5 ranked Rams were out to prove they are No.1. Adding to the fuel was a crowd which was clearly in favor of Yuba.

“We felt disrespected as the No. 5 seed,” said guard, Marcus Hall. “But it was a blessing in the end.”

On the eve of their match against Yuba, an emotional Madec told his team how badly he wanted the title. The players were more than ready to win the title for the man who has invited them into his home so many times and cooked meals for them.

“We have the best coach in the state. He is the master motivator,” said guard, Shailo Leafa. “He wanted it so bad. He deserves it.”

For Madec, it’s about more than a championship. It’s about a commitment, a lifestyle, a family.

“My family is this program,” he says. “Everybody is giving their whole life to each other.

board.” Madec sees his wife and kids as well as his players as part of the program. His wife has become the team mom while his kids have built a strong bond with the players.

The players too have come a long ways since that first day of practice.

This had to be the year. The talent was clearly in place; the mastermind was one of a kind; the desire was unmatchable. And as strangers became brothers, the dream slowly took form.

another trip to the final four.”

There was nothing to be said about the next year. The Rams already knew what they must do. And they did. Through their competitive spirit, and a willingness to put the team ahead of any individual, the Rams got the job done.

“Every guy was about the team. It’s rare to get 14 players playing together as one,” said Gabriel. “Our goal is to always make practice harder than the games.

We have the most intense, competitive, high level atmosphere you can imagine.”

With nine sophomores expected to return, the Rams will be ready for another title pursuit. In just a couple of weeks, it’s back to work.

Gabriel appreciates most the leadership provided by Madec.

“He [Madec] knows when to be tough and when to show love,” he said. “He knows when to turn the heat up and when to turn the heat down.”

Student Suspended Over Facebook Threat

A Fresno City College student was suspended for the remainder of the spring semester on March 7 for allegedly making a threat on Facebook.

State Center Community College District police received information from an outside source that the FCC student had posted a comment on Facebook that could be perceived as a threat to campus and students’ safety.

In addition to suspension from FCC, the student has also been prohibited from entering other SCCCD campuses.

“The case is still under the investigation, so the student’s name and the nature of the threat can’t be revealed yet,” said SCCCD Police Lieutenant, Richard Gaines. “Although, so far we believe there’s no need to be concerned about campus safety. If there was something really danger-

Interim President, Tony Cantu, and a small group of people including representatives from the district office, are planning to have a meeting next Tuesday to discuss what will be spoken about at an upcoming open forum in which Habib and executive board members will address campus safety issues and policies.

“I’ve been communicating with Tony Cantu about what’s going on and we’re having a meeting to discuss that issue and the larger issue which is ‘What do we do? How do we prepare for those things [student threats] to happen,” said Habib.

“The administration of Fresno City College has the safety of the students and the staff and everybody in mind.”

Community Publication Provides Forum for Expression Art Hop, and Verduzco is planning an indoor/outdoor show for local bands and artists.

“From Under The Rug” functions as the publisher of books such as “Many Moons”. The first book Williams published shared the same name. Williams has published three books and a chapbook under the imprint, and

has also helped other artists get books printed. While the second volume of “Many Moons” won’t be out until June, a new chapbook will be printed ever month.

While juggling school and running this publication is a lot of work for Williams, he says that “the best experience is being able to see people come together.”

Artistic expression can exist in many different forms, and Fresno City College student, Daniel Williams, is expressing himself via “The Many Moons All In Orbit”, the literary book he co-published with former FCC student, Jessika Verduzco.

“The Many Moons All in Orbit” was published in Nov. 2011 and features 10 different local artists, eight of which have ties to FCC. It was printed under the publication name, “From Under the Rug”, also started by Williams and Verduzco.

The goal of “Many Moons” is “to express art as a community,” Williams said. The title of book is a reference to how there are many moons in the galaxy, just as there are “many different people and many different places.”

Williams said he wanted the literary book to be a public project with participation of many individuals. Submissions for the first volume were mostly from close friends, but Williams and Verduzco said they would welcome contribution from others in the next issue which will be published this June.

“We’re looking for anyone who is creative and is willing to help us out,” said Verduzco. “We’re not just asking people to submit because they can, but to submit because they feel like they have something to say.”

“Many Moons” was an idea that Williams had for a while, before going through with it. “It origi-

nated back in high school when I wanted to collaborate with other writers,” he said. “I wanted to express art with a group of people.”

Williams began working on the idea in September 2011. The first book was funded by both Williams and Verduzco, who saved up the money for it.

Getting “Many Moons” printed was a process all its own. After all the submissions, Williams organized them while Verduzco worked on the design and layout.

The book was then published through Lu-Lu.com.

Williams hopes for the project to expand. “We want this to grow and to be something,” said Williams.

Both Williams and Verduzco will be attending California State University, Sacramento in the fall semester and would like for the project to expand there as well.

However, Williams said that he would like the book to become more prominent in Fresno, since that is where it was started.

Williams and Verduzco said that after they begin expanding in Sacramento, they will begin collaborating on what direction to go next.

Since publication, they’ve been distribution copies all over town.

Contributors received a handful of copies to distribute; a few shops in Fresno have copies for customers to browse while they’re there, and Williams and Verduzco said they were in discussions with Twee Boutique in the Tower District to sell copies. Copies of the book can be purchased through Amazon or directly through the publishers.

ASG Amends Bylaws to Allow Online Reimbursement For Activism Stories

Fresno City College’s Associated Student Government passed an amendment to its financial code on March 6, allowing members of the student government to receive reimbursements for expenses incurred while advocating on behalf of students or performing their duties as student officers.

The unanimous approval of the reimbursement amendment comes after a month of discussion inside the ASG Senate over the costs incurred by the unpaid officers.

The new process, established by the amendment, will have all reimbursement requests flow to the Executive Vice President, who will determine whether the expense is “associated with advocacy” or “incurred in the performance of duties.”

Both types of expenses have a cap, with advocacy expenses being capped at $100 and dutyrelated expenses capped at $50.

The changes to the financial

code places a heavier burden on the student representative fee, which is directly funded by students. That representative fee will cover the advocacy expenses, whereas the student government’s general fund will cover the expenses related to officer’s performance of duties.

The measure, when first introduced by student trustee Chris Coronado, prompted Senator Gloria Dominguez and ASG President Cindy Quiralte to discuss the reimbursement of semester-long parking permits.

Currently, staff and students, including Fresno City College interim president Tony Cantu, pay the current fee for a parking permit. Members of the ASG Executive Board are currently able to purchase staff parking permits, which run the same price as student permits.

While the amendment doesn’t exclude parking permits from being a reimbursable expense, Coronado said that such a proposal to reimburse the cost of parking permits would be made through a Senate bill.

According to the amendment text, reimbursable costs can be incurred only “while in the performance of duties.”

The amendment does not specify what qualifies as a “performance of duty,” leaving the Executive Vice President to decide whether the expense was associated with advocacy or other duty-related activities.

When asked about the ambiguity of the amendment in regards to what qualifies as “advocacy” and the number of different expenses being presented to the student government, Coronado said that “things are always going to come up.”

He then later iterated that the duties that would qualify for reimbursement were spelled out in the student government’s constitution.

Coronado said that an acceptable expense reimbursement would be if the Executive Vice President, who is responsible for financial and budgetary matters, filed for a reimbursement for expenses incurred while attending a budgeting conference.

The problem: the Executive Vice President’s duties don’t include attending conferences.

Even worse, the Executive Vice President is responsible for evaluating the expenses that officers are seeking to be reimbursed, likely causing a conflict of interest.

Now approved, the reimbursement process begins with an ASG officer filing for reimbursement with the Executive Vice President within 30 days of incurring the expense and with documentation.

The Executive Vice President would then have 10 days to process the request and present it to the student Senate. An agenda item for the reimbursement would be added to the consent agenda, discussed and approved or rejected.

The bottom line and intent of the amendment in a single stipulation, that “participatory government” shall not be contingent upon economic ability.”

Quiralte echoed that stipulation, adding that the expense reimbursement is “meant to support student advocacy.”

Summer Bridge Helps Transition New Students

Summer bridge programs are designed to help newly graduated high school students assimilate to college life and plan their academic future. These programs are all over the nation, and now they are also at Fresno City College.

Dean of Counseling Mark Sanchez, Ed.D said,“The summer bridge program is a learning community program for students structured in conjunction with the six week summer session which is designed to prepare students for the academic rigors of college coursework.” He continued,

“Students take the courses together for one year, beginning in the summer, form a support network, get academic support, take field trips to university visits, and plan their educational goals and futures.”

In the summer of 2011, FCC began offering this program to graduating high school seniors to help guide their college path towards success.

Colleges all around the nation have found the benefit of having these programs for incoming students.

“This program is offered due to support from a Title V grant offered by the United States Department of Education,” Sanchez

said. “The bridge program was implemented last summer and will continue this summer 2012.”

The academic requirements for qualifying for the program are eligibilities for ESL 67/68 or English 125/126, and Math 101/103.

Virginia professor Heather D. Wathington, Ph.D. wrote in a study on the impacts of summer bridge programs that, “Many community colleges have implemented innovative programs to provide an alternative to traditional developmental education by helping students to build competencies and persist in college.”

She continued,“Developmental Summer Bridge Programs have

become increasingly popular interventions to strengthen student preparation, reduce the need for developmental education, and orient students to college.”

The program is not necessarily aimed at ‘high risk’ students, which is seen in the Math 101 eligibility requirement, it is more aimed at students that need a nudge in the right direction to be successful.

Sanchez said, “This program will be every summer for the next four summers and may continue depending on grant funding.”

FCC Honors Strong Alumnae When it comes to its alumni, Fresno City College can boast of some outstanding women. FCC’s impressive list includes Margaret Mims, Fresno County Sheriff; Dr. Jannett Jackson, president, College of Alameda; Susan B. Anderson, Fresno County Supervisor, District 2, and Stefani Booroojian, news anchorwoman, KSEE 24.

The college is highlighting these women as part of the Women’s History Month celebration.

Sheriff Margaret Mims Fresno County Sheriff Sheriff Mims began her career in law enforcement in the City of Kerman in 1980 as the first female officer. She became a deputy sheriff in 1983 and has continued to climb the ranks since then.

She was the first female sergeant to supervise field patrol units and the first female to achieve the ranks of lieutenant, captain and assistant sheriff in the 154 year history of the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office. In 2006, Sheriff Mims finally shattered the last “glass ceiling” when she was elected the first female sheriff of Fresno County.

Sheriff Mims graduated from Fresno City College’s Police Academy as well as Reedley College and Fresno Pacific University.

After 30 years of breaking barriers, Sheriff Margaret Mims has proved everyone wrong. She once said, “When a man starts in this profession everyone assumes he can do the job; when a woman starts in this profession, everyone assumes she can’t.”

Dr. Jannett Jackson President, College of Alameda A retired colonel in the U.S. Army National Guard, Dr. Jannett Jackson spent nearly 20 years with the State Center Community College District as a faculty member, classified professional and administrator. Jackson was dean of the Learning Resources Division at Fresno City College before her position at the College of Alameda.

Besides her academic career, Dr. Jackson served as a colonel in the U.S. Army National Guard.

She led troops in Iraq and Saudi Arabia, and at the time of her last deployment, she was the only African-American brigade commander in the California National Guard and the highest-ranking African-American woman.

Dr. Jackson was recognized in 2005 as Fresno City College’s Distinguished Alumna.

Susan B. Anderson Fresno County Supervisor Supervisor Susan B. Anderson attended FCC on a part-time basis between 1973 and 1982 and then went on to attend the San Joaquin Law School.

Ms. Anderson was the first woman elected to the seat of County Clerk/Registrar of Voters in Fresno County. She served in this position for 10 years and successfully implemented a systemwide overhaul that increased efficiency and responsiveness in her department.

In 2002, Ms. Anderson was elected to the Fresno County Board of Supervisors, District 2.

She says she is dedicated to improving the lives of children and has been instrumental in constructing a new state-of-the-art juvenile hall in Fresno County. She has also led the effort to develop Focus Forward, a non-profit organization to provide mentoring, tutoring and enrichment classes to children in the county system.

Stefani Booroojian KSEE 24 News Anchorwoman After nearly 30 years with the KSEE 24 News Team, Stefani Booroojian is one of the most recognizable women in the Central Valley. Ms. Booroojian has received many awards, including two Emmy Awards, a distinguished media service award from Fresno State and a Fresno City College Distinguished Alumna award in 2001.

Ms. Booroojian attended FCC after graduation from Fresno High School. She lived near FCC and because it was affordable. While she did not have a success plan, Booroojian knew she was expected to obtain a college degree.

After obtaining her degree in broadcasting from Fresno State, Ms. Booroojian spent time building her career first in radio and then in television, first as a behindthe-scenes producer and later, a reporter. She says it took a lot of hard work to move beyond that.

“It was important to me to prove that I was a legitimate journalist,” says Ms. Booroojian. She was a 22-year-old woman. She said, “I had to do a lot of learning, fast.”

Attitudes towards women in broadcasting have changed considerably since Ms. Booroojian began her career. Broadcasting and journalism was, and still is, a significantly male dominated industry in which a woman must prove her mettle in order to succeed.

“When I first started on the anchor desk, I wasn’t allowed to participate in election coverage,” says Ms. Booroojian. “The news director at the time told me he didn’t want to ‘take any chances’ by having me participate in the coverage. Now it’s expected that women are a part of all coverage.”

Women in journalism have come a long way from covering light-hearted lady’s issues and fashion. “We are not token women anymore,” says Ms. Booroojian.

“We don’t just cover the “fluffy” stories; we’re capable of doing anything and everything.”

More than 100 students and community members were at the Fresno City College cafeteria on Saturday to take advantage of the free health care being offered at the Tzu Chi Health Fair.

“We have so many people out of work right now,” said Gilbert Hernandez, a volunteer Spanish interpreter with Tzu Chi. “Services are free. People cannot afford care. Even for those who have access to medicine, they still can’t afford the medicine. There are programs so people can get medicine quite cheap.”

There were over 100 patients at the health fair, most of whom received several of the services that were being offered. Those who signed up for treatment were able to receive blood pressure testing, blood sugar testing, adult medicine, pediatric medicine, acupuncture, and dental care.

Lance Truong, president of the Pre-Health Society club at FCC, said it was challenging getting administration’s permission to allow the fair to take place on campus.

Truong said that one of the concerns was whether the event would have enough volunteers.

Truong solicited volunteers from all over the community. Several of the volunteers were from Reedley College to provide assistance wherever necessary, including acting as translators for those who didn’t speak English. The doctors were also volunteers from the community.

Some of the language that the volunteer translators provided included Spanish, Punjabi, Chinese, Hindu, and even sign language.

“I would rather have extra vol-

unteers, which is what we have today, so we have people standing around instead of not enough people.” Truong said.

The Tzu Chi Foundation, a nonprofit Buddhist organization, has offices in 47 countries, and is one of the largest charity organizations originating from Taiwan.

Students March For Education

Approximately 7,000 students from around the state, including 30 from FCC converged on the Capitol on March 5 to address budget cuts to higher education.

By Alex Tavlian Rampage Reporter Fresno City College students joined nearly 7,000 other California college students on the state Capitol to “March for Education” on March 5.

The goal for many protesters was simple -- stop the repeated cuts to funding of higher education in the state.

FCC’s delegation, like every other college’s, was briefed about the legislation being promoted by the protest by a representative of the Student Senate for California Community Colleges. The legislations included an open source textbook plan, a statewide scholarship for middle class students and a new tax on millionaires with the proceeds going straight to California’s education system.

The students gathered represented contingencies from the state’s three arms of higher education -- from nearly every public community college, California

state university campuses and University of California campuses.

Students marched just over one mile, from Southside Park at the corner of Sixth and T streets to the Capitol building.

Soon the march, organized by student advocacy groups from the UCs, CSUs and community colleges, was joined by others affiliated with the Occupy movement and other advocacy groups, each with its own agenda.

Following the hour-long march, the student protesters rallied at the steps of the Capitol. A selection of students provided anecdotes about their plight in public education and how they they’ve been adversely affected by the cuts in education funding.

“I am the product of struggle.

We are the product of struggle,” UCLA student Joelle Gamble shouted to the crowd. “We’re fired up and can’t take it no more.”

After 20 minutes of student rallying, Assembly Speaker, John Pérez, D-Los Angeles, and Senate President pro-tem, Darrell

Steinberg, D-Sacramento, spoke to the crowd over their sponsored bills currently weaving through committees.

Pérez, the sponsor of the middle class scholarship bill, said that the state would have to close a tax loophole for outof-state corporations in order to reduce the tuition costs for California’s middle class students,.

“California made a promise, that every single person who worked hard in high school would have the opportunity to go to and make the most of their potential at a UC, CSU or community college,” he said. “That promise is not being kept when community colleges across California have drastic cutbacks, layoffs and fee hikes that force students out of the system.”

Steinberg, who is pushing a farreaching plan to give students free online access to their textbooks and reduce the cost of physical texts to $20, said that the cuts to education were some of the toughest decisions made by the state legislature.

“We’ve cut billions of dollars and I’ve hated every minute of it,” Steinberg said.

FCC student, Carlos Bejarano, said he liked Steinberg’s open source textbook plan, but was concerned that such a law would be impossible to implement and that it could it could drive away textbook publishers.

Fellow FCC student, Chris De La Torre, said the current prices are unfair to college students.

“College students are getting ripped off by these high prices,” he said.

Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom also spoke to the crowd, trying to navigate large and difficult political terrain – the three competing tax initiatives.

“I’m not sure which one’s going to make the ballot,” he said. “I want to be supportive of the Governor in this context. It’s the one he believes is the best for the state.”

While assisting Gov. Jerry Brown, Newsom said he was concerned that the governor’s safety and education revenue

enhancement proposal may not have enough momentum. He said that the Brown tax plan needs to consolidate support from the other two tax initiatives so it could make the November ballot.

Newsom also addressed the ever-rising fees that students were paying, saying that the 300 percent inflation was more than that of health care costs.

“We have got to reinvest in our formula for success,” Newsom said. “And that starts with higher education. If you don’t invest in the future, you’re not going to get much out of your future.”

Cindy Quiralte, FCC’s Associated Student Government president, said that the rally allows students to directly advocate for their education.

“Students ask the question: ‘How valuable is our education?’” she said. “We’re going to shout it loud and clear to the people making the decisions that education should be valued.”

Susana Sosa, an art history instructor at Fresno City College, gave a lecture on March 7 on “The Cult of Beauty: The Victorian Avant-Garde, 1860-1900” as a bonus part to the educational bus excursion program at the Fresno Art Museum.

“The Cult of Beauty” is currently in exhibit at the Legion of Honor, San Francisco, which is its only U.S. stop in its world tour. With the help of the bus excursions, Fresno locals are able to travel and see the exhibit in person. With more than 180 works of art to display, this is the first major exhibit that depicts the British Aesthetic Movement. The exhibit includes works by James McNeill Whistler, Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rosetti. Also included are designers Christopher Dresser, William Morris and E.W. Godwin.

“What’s really good about the show is that it’s very populated with artists,” said Sosa. “Before it just focused on painting and now it shows idealized scenes in furniture and even teapots,” she continued.

Sosa’s lecture is designed to enhance the experience of seeing the exhibit by focusing on certain aspects or areas and progressing in a certain order. In the exhibit, museum-goers tend to start where they please, move in any given direction and focus only on what catches their eye. The lectures give a broad background of the pieces being featured, which is also good if a person does

not have time to read the each piece’s description in the exhibit. With the lectures, Sosa is able to provide such museum-goers with context of what they are looking at.

“This gives viewers an inside look as to what it was like in London at the time,” said Sosa.

During her lecture, Sosa interacted with the audience, some of which she knew already. The lecture covered Walter Pater, an important 19th century essayist and art critic, who asked the questions, “What effect does it have on me?” and “Does it give me pleasure, and if so, how?”

Quoting critics of that time period during the lecture only facilitated the understanding one might have for the works of art being shown.

Sosa talked about key points in Aestheticism, including the artistic roots of it. She presented the history of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, founded in 1848. This aspect described how the mid-century British searched for a modern style of art that emphasized truthfulness.

Using slides on a PowerPoint presentation, Sosa used specific pieces to exemplify her points.

As she showed “The Awakening Conscience” by William Holman Hunt, she encouraged audience participation by asking questions directly to members of the audience.

This further proved the point that art should communicate – not just any message, but a message of its time.

“Ruskin’s idea of looking at art with innocent eyes didn’t really work for him,” said an audience member.

The trial was an important case as it asked the question, “What is art?” and “Can it be decided in court?”

With that, Sosa moved on to Aestheticism’s legacy and its movement from Avant-Garde to the popular, almost describing the same thing that happens today with every new trend that makes its way through society.

“What happens when everyone becomes aestheticized?” asked Sosa,

as she ended her lecture with points about Aestheticism in literature.

This is the second time Sosa gives a lecture at the Fresno Art Museum to accompany an art exhibit. This particular show has become a favorite of Sosa’s. She first saw the artists explored in this exhibit at the age of 21 in London through a study abroad program at California State University, Fresno.

“Being able to see it again is like seeing old friends,” Sosa said, “This group of artists really just wanted to make the world beautiful.”

It seems like Lana Del Rey suddenly came out of nowhere and shot straight to the top as a formed star.

Three months ago she launched her “Born to Die” music video and today it hit almost 30 million views.

Bloggers all over the world have already named the 25-year-old singer “the new Amy Winehouse,” “skinny Adele” and thanked her for bringing back old Hollywood music traditions.

Lana Del Rey quickly took Lady Gaga, Rihanna and other overplayed singers’ spotlight with a mix of her deep mysterious voice and sex appeal.

Although, she has been around since 2007, she was apparently not noticeable enough.

Before appearing on TV, covers of famous magazines, inspiring designers and getting a purse named after her, Lana Del Rey was known by her original name, Elizabeth Grant.

She had a contract with a major music label and sang country, but was not successful.

In 2010, looking for fame in the field of indie music, Lizzy recreated her image.

She adopted a pseudonym that combined the name of the 40s Hollywood actress, Lana Turner and a car named Ford Del Rey. She launched her first album, “Lana Del Rey,” but removed it from the market because she wanted people to pay more attention to her most current album.

Her second album “Born to Die” officially came out on Jan. 30, 2012, and that’s when the new

star was spotted.

Soft, naïve and shy music contrasting with her brave pin-up looks caught audience’s eyes and ears right away.

She was named an International Breakthrough at Brit Awards, nominated for “Best Track,” “Best Music Video” and “Best New Artist” at NME Awards while her songs were soundtracks for major fashion shows including Christian Dior this season.

Despite her provocative looks that attract guys, Lana Del Rey could be truly named a girls’ singer.

She takes us through a break-up (“Video Games”), looking for love (“This is what makes us girls”), adventuring (“Driving in cars with boys”) and just sharing a passion for diamonds (“Diet Mountain Dew,” “National Anthem”).

“Born to Die” has a track for each of these situations.

All 15 songs sound “gentle” and “spicy” at the same time and evoke mixed emotions.

The album is a story of a bad girl who has regrets but still enjoys life.

In interviews, Lana Del Rey herself has described the record as an homage to true love and a tribute to living life on the wild side.

While a lot of critics still say that she did not use her whole potential, “Born to Die” is a big and fresh promising beginning.

Makhenda’s Offers Great Southern Cuisine In Fresno plate of food.

My “one choice of meat” combination plate came with three large pieces of fried fish, generous portions fantastic yams, collard greens and a hearty cornbread muffin.

Mahkenda’s Girls breaded their fish differently than most other American restaurants. Their crispy, flavorful Southern style caters perfectly to basa meat. This gives their fish a texture that may seem a bit unfamiliar to some. I highly recommend expanding your fish fry horizons.

Customers would do well to arrive with a big appetite. Larger combination plates offer a choice of two or more meats along with three or more sides and extra cornbread. If customers manage to save room, Makhenda’s desserts

include sweet potato pie and peach cobbler.

Mahkenda’s offers an excellent deal for students with constrained budgets. I highly recommend that students take a short walk to see

what southern comfort is all about.

trailer, 343i did release a look at the game in a video documentary titled “Halo 4 First Look”. While very little campaign gameplay was shown, great shots of the multiplayer were revealed. The maps will be made from scratch, rather than making like lazy a-words as Bungie did with “Halo: Reach” and just recycling campaign maps.

Armor permutations will return, and will even have effects on the gameplay, but not in the fashion of a perk system like in Call of Duty.

I don’t entirely know what to expect for the soundtrack of the

game, now that Martin O’Donnell is no longer working on the Halo games, but if the one track heard in this ViDoc is just a teaser of what’s to come, then I can’t wait to hear the other tracks when I play the full game.

Unlike previous titles, this game is set to tie in other media from the Halo universe. Previous Halo games have usually avoided going too deep into the universe established by the novels, and “Halo: Reach” nearly went as far as trampling the story written in Eric Nylund’s “The Fall of Reach.”

However, it has been stated by 343i that this game, unlike its predecessors, will instead be utilizing the novels and tying in their plotlines to further strengthen the story of Halo 4, notably with the two most recently released books, “Halo: Glasslands” and “Halo: Primordium.”

The game is to take place right after the events of Halo 3 and will supposedly be focused on the Master Chief’s character, giving us more insight into the man behind the well-known MJOLNIR Mark VI mask, as well as his A.I. com-

panion Cortana.

There has been no release from 343i on what the “new enemy unlike anything Master Chief has ever faced before” will be, but from what I’ve read in recent novels, as well as saw in the terminals in “Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary”, we may get to see the return of the Forerunners.

I for one cannot wait to find out when Halo 4 is released later this year!

Since that time, there hasn’t been much about the game worthy of mention. There was a concept art trailer that showed some pretty cool pictures, but no fully developed images of the game itself.

Exploring The Talent Behind “Almost Maine”

Students and staff from the theater department at Fresno City College performed “Almost Maine,” a play written by actor and playwright John Cariani.

The play made its Central Valley debut on March 2 and ran through March 10.

“Almost Maine” is a collection of comedic vignettes that portray different love stories between several characters, all of which take place at the same time in one night. The play takes place in the fictional town of Almost in northern Maine. Characters in the play experience love in many, often funny, ways.

The cast and crew of “Almost Maine” went through an extensive process to prepare for this production. They auditioned, did readings and outside research as well.

Hope (Sam Occhino), returns back home to find her first love (Chris Hoffman) after leaving him to persue her career.

For 21-year-old Kai Di Mino and 19-year-old Olivia Stemler – who played the couple, Pete and Ginnette respectively – part of the outside research was to build their character history.

“We worked together on build-

ing character history and discussed our physical points on stage,” said Di Mino. “We went star-gazing,” added Stemler – as their characters spend time star-gazing in the play.

Aside from outside research – which also included knowing

climates for Maine – 20-year-old theater student Esau Mora said imagination was also an important aspect of the preparation process.

“You have to delve as deeply as you can into your character,” said Mora, who played Steve. In playing Steve, Mora found that not only could he relate to him, but anyone else could as well.

“Steve is all of us,” he said of his character that gets out of a bad relationship and doesn’t want to be in a relationship again. Mora said that at some point we all have “that fear that’s the really scary part.”

Mora wasn’t the only one who felt a connection with his character. Of playing Pete, Di Mino said, “Jumping into Pete is like coming alive.”

In addition to connections to their respective characters, actors also felt connections with each

other, crew and staff. Instead of seeing each other as competition, they support each other.

“The cast has come together, we’re a family. We believe in what the show is about,” said Di Mino.

After a long preparation process and the connections made along the way, it all comes down to a performance with an audience.

“Theater is meant to inspire and move an audience. If we can create thought, we’ve done our job. We are a mirror to society and hopefully better your relationships,” said Mora.

He continued, “As artists we try to promote that growth; you’re falling into a wonderland and coming back to reality bringing these treasures with you.”

FCC theater instructor and playwright, Chuck Erven, won third place in the David Mark Cohen Award category at the Kennedy

Center for his Spring 2011 play, “The Ballad Of Chet.”

The national award is given to three winners for new plays written by working playwrights and were produced at a college or a university.

“When we produce a new play

we always enter the production and the script for consideration,” said Erven. He added that when the theater department produces a new play written by a student, those are also entered into the competition.

For this competition, the Kennedy

Center divides the country into eight regions with California being in region eight with Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, and Utah. Although many plays are submitted at the regional level, only two from each region are allowed to be submitted at the national level.

According to Erven, the plays submitted by each region at the national level are entered in a blind submission; “names of the authors are not on the title page,” he said.

“It’s really great for everyone involved in developing the play when it is recognized,” said Erven; production companies and college theaters are more interested in producing plays that have placed in the top three of the David Mark Cohen Award.

ASG’s Reimbursement Amendment Is Unjust Editorial Rampage Staff In a unanimous vote during its March 6 meeting, the Associated Student Government at Fresno City College passed a resolution to amend its bylaws and allow its members to seek financial reimbursement for “costs incurred while in the performance of duties.” This is a first in the history of FCC student government.

The reimbursement fees will come from student representative fees and the ASG general funds.

The amendment requires the executive vice president to determine “which account shall be deemed appropriate.” No one knows at the moment what portion of ASG funds this will represent. There is no statement in the resolution regarding whether qualifying expenses must be pre-authorized and by whom.

What we know is that the

reimbursement amendment assigns funds paid by the student body to other students who are claiming a financial burden due to being members of ASG. While there are burdens associated with being on the student government, the student representatives clearly understood the requirements of the positions they occupy on behalf of fellow FCC students.

So what expenses are reimbursable? What types of duties performed by the ASG are beyond what one may reasonably ascribe as normal duties? What is even more troubling is that this amendment is vague and does not cover the details of what a student may be reimbursed for. Additionally, the area covered by this amendment is too vast and clearly leaves room for possible abuse in the future.

What can be claimed? Where is the line crossed between

acceptable expenses and unreasonable greed? These are questions that every FCC student should be asking of their representatives.

ASG is a student organization representing students. Our representatives should be enduring what the rest of the student body endures. They should truly be representative of the body they represent. If members of ASG can ask to be reimbursed for their parking passes, for example, other students should be able to seek the same.

Currently, students who serve on the ASG receive benefits that other students do not. For one, some members of ASG receive staff parking privileges. They also get priority registration for their classes. Other FCC students do not have the same opportunities, and extending the benefits accorded ASG members could lead to two tiers

of students – the ASG and the rest of us.

Is it right for student fees to be used to reimburse representatives for using their personal funds? The answer should be “NO.” Shockingly, the ASG justifies this move with a claim that “participation in student government and participatory government shall not be contingent upon economic ability.” Equally, FCC students should not have to fund any students’ participation in student government.

Students who elect to serve on the ASG need to understand they will incur expenses or suffer loss of work hours. We all understand there are related expenses. It is an unfortunate reality.

The student government does not have the right to ask for reimbursement of expenses at the cost of the very people that they claim to be advocating for.

Especially given the present

economic situation and the rising cost of attending college, this is not the time for an elite few to ask more from the rest of us. Instead, the ASG should never lose sight of their responsibility to those they serve. If there’s excess money in the general funds, that money should be funneled back to students, not members of the student government.

The ASG should explore options other than taking from student fees and the general funds. They should raise money like other student organizations.

They could also appeal to the college alumni as well as local businesses.

Lastly, ASG leaders should consider what other students feel about this issue. We are eager to hear our representatives justify receiving reimbursements when the rest of us can’t.

Dear Mr. Vice President, Thank you for continually ignoring the Central Valley, and Fresno City College by extension.

During your recent tour of community colleges in the various swing states, from Tennessee to North Carolina to Ohio, you frequently touted the work that community colleges are doing to provide students access to the most inaccessible necessity in

our society: jobs.

On the stump, you’ve boasted that colleges like FCC are “part of the fabric of our communities.” Going so far as to say that “Americans are tired of being tired.”

While it’s nice to use the folksy rhetoric and the political platitude of the day, the hard truth is that community colleges aren’t exactly standing tall on the pedestal on which you have placed them.

Over the past few weeks, our college district has had to cut another

$3.5 million, in addition to a midyear cut of $2.5 million, from its current budget while also worrying about the budget for next year. The result? Students feeling cheated because their educational opportunities are being drowned over babble about scrimping and saving.

The real problem with our community colleges? Your assessment of them is outdated and just plain wrong.

Two separate studies by California’s State Chancellor’s Office and

Little Hoover Commission, found that California’s community college students are so unprepared for the workforce, that its hitting hard at our lagging economy.

Soon, this vast unpreparedness could create a vicious circle of a downtrodden economy, in which the workforce can’t expand or keep pace, leaving businesses with slowed growth because of a shrinking supply of skilled labor. Soon, the Golden State ceases to be golden.

The two reports found that our

community colleges are spectacularly failing to provide ill-prepared students the skills to succeed at attaining a degree or gaining enough work skills to survive in the workforce and stay off of the breadline.

While echoing each other over the failures of students and their work in junior colleges, the two studies split over the role of community colleges in adult education, with the Little Hoover Commission backing the notion that community colleges should take adult education from K-12 institutions, where the State Chancellor wants to leave K-12 districts with the jurisdiction.

The solution to our jobs problem can’t just be found in the classroom, contrary to the administration’s belief, but in the marketplace. This is about discovering the demand for skilled labor and naturally adjusting to that demand, rather than pretending that the status quo is “fine and dandy.”

While we wait for serious economic recovery to trickle down in to the Valley, our community will have to stick to worrying about how to have students keep pace in an ever expanding local and global economy, and ensure that they’re performing up to current academic standards, too.

Now is the right about the time we ought to put our community’s fabric in the washing machine and clean out the failures of skills-based education.

Until then, I’ll continue to be tired of being tired.

These are all solid examples of superhero films. Superhero films featuring a male lead are always more successful than the few films that feature a female lead. “Catwoman,” “Electra” and “Wonder Woman” are all examples of failed attempts at a superhero films featuring a female protagonist.

The media industry is sexist. I will even go out on a limb and say that most of us know that already, but why do we not care?

Some may argue that this is evidence that women don’t have an equal footing. It is fundamental to recognize however, that even though mothers generally take on this responsibility, the freedom to support a child is the same choice for both men and women.

This is made evident in the fact that most every obstacle that gives men an advantage over women has been removed from modern life.

According to the New York Times, since late 2008, women account for the majority of the American workforce.

Equal representation in the workplace is reinforced by strict sexual harassment standards. Sexual harassment in workplace settings can now result in the firing or reprimand of entire departments.

Women are now as empowered and protected as men in the workplace.

Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows that since 2007, males have accounted for 80 percent of the jobs lost here in the United States. Many employment opportunities vanished during the housing crash, especially in the field of construction.

Male-dominated jobs like construction are at the mercy of the economy. Femaledominated jobs including nursing and childcare are typically long-term careers with a lower risk of termination during economic downturns.

Beyond employment security, Census data published in 2007 shows that females maintain a 6 percent greater likelihood than males of receiving a high school diploma. This remains consistent for comparing statistics between races.

High school diplomas, though far less fruitful in the American jobs market than college degrees, are helpful with applying for vocational training and job placement.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2009 Current Population Survey, since 1991, females have received more bachelor’s degrees, master’s degrees and doctoral degrees than their equally qualified, male counterparts. Since that time, the ratio of women receiving more master’s degrees and doctorates than men has expanded.

In light of these achievements, what evidence is there that women are given a disadvantage? There are several indicators that imply that women are at a disadvantage.

However, the consequences women disproportionately face are as a result of personal choices.

For example, even though women continue to receive a higher percentage of arts and humanities degrees at the university level, they continue to receive scientific degrees less often than men.

This is not the result of women being rejected from scientific fields. It is the result of women pursuing scientific fields less often.

Just as men aren’t discriminated against by the arts, women are in no way excluded from scientific fields of study.

Another segment of the female population that appears to fall short of equality are

Beyond this point, certain checks and balances exist to help accommodate for single caregivers who have made the deci-

sion to care for their children. In addition to government services related to health and housing, women receive 97 percent of all divorce alimony.

Fifteen years ago, women received $5.6 billion in paid alimony. As of 2007, that amount has since climbed to $9.4 billion.

Many states allow for alimony recipients to receive payments for the rest of their lives, even after marrying a new spouse.

The question at hand is whether men and women have an equal footing.

Our freedoms, our opportunities and our consequences are essentially the same.

In addition to this, balances exist to help account for the parental role that women disproportionally choose to play. By our very nature, our footing may not be completely identical, as our temperaments differ somewhat. Still, there is certainly an equal balance between our standpoints.

The value and prosperity is where women fall behind as the struggle to break free of the prescribed gender role continues.

Women now are more educated than they have ever been. They take advantage of more educational opportunities and they have taken the workforce by storm. What then, stimulates the continuous difference in status? The gender roles.

“Women In America”, a report detailing the roles women in society and their respective statistics, explains that while women are actively pursuing a higher education, they are still being directed into the same areas.

Humanities and Liberal Arts subjects are among the top fields for women to enter into while the number of female scientists, physicians and CEO’s remains low.

Is this what is meant by equality? It may not seem like a big difference to some, but when raising a family on one salary 25 percent makes quite the difference.

Therein lays one of the problems.

Women are entering the workforce with degrees and being paid 25 percent less yet they are still expected to take care of children and maintain a household.

Women are still held responsible for roles thrust upon them by a deeply patriarchal society.

Fewer women are getting married now, according to “Women In America” and so fewer families have a double income. If a woman has a child and is not married or there is a divorce, the child is generally placed with the mother leaving her to support that child on a salary that is 25 percent less than what her male counterpart would make. How is that, in any way, just?

This report, “Women In America,” brought together data from a study done in 2009 that explains how women are not as prosperous as men. So, the answer to the question is simple.

No, there is not an equal footing among the sexes because there is still that gap in pay and a lack of support.

There cannot be an equal footing with gaps in expectations. Women have no problem working to earn society’s acceptance even though they should not have to.

It took until 1920 to get the right for women to vote and it took until 2009, when Barack Obama was elected president, for a law to be passed demanding equal pay for equal work.

The Fresno City College women’s basketball team finished its season with a 71-63 loss against Mt. San Antonio

College at the state semifinals on Friday.

The Rams trailed by 11 points at halftime and were plagued by missed layups, traveling calls and fouls.

was the Rams’ usual style of basketball. The women made more layups, controlled the ball better and put pressure on 6-foot-3 inch forward, Danielle Peacon.

The Rams took the lead as Peacon went to the bench with foul troubles. But it was a short-lived lead. Even as Peacon went to the bench, the height advantage of Mt. San Antonio players was too much for the Rams to overcome.

The Mounties controlled the paint with a 46-26 advantage.

The Rams’ foul trouble continued as sophomore forward Nicole Chapple, who scored 18 points, fouled out of the game with two minutes and 32 seconds remaining on the clock.

Rams’ head coach Brian Tessler decided to play the foul game in an attempt to lengthen the game with free throw shots. The tactic, however, did not work. Mt. SAC was still able to make free throws under pressure.

In their final game, sophomores Taryn and Sarina Sayama, Nicole Chapple, Tabitha Torres and Sarah Mendoza combined for 58 out of the 63

points.

The Rams finished the season with a record of 28-6.

The Mounties scoring was led by 30 points from freshmen guard, Morgan Mason.

This season the Rams have collected honors on every level. Every sophomore has been acknowledged by either the Central Valley Conference or the State as outstanding Athletes.

Rams players Taryn and Sarina Sayama were named Central Valley Conference First Team while guard Tabitha Torres was recently named a member of the California Junior College All Star First Team to go along with her CVC co-player of the year award.

Sarah Mendoza is a member of the CJC All Star Second Team and Nicole Chapple is one of the five All-Tournament Team members. Head Coach Brain Tessler is the California Junior College Co-Coach of the year in addition to his Central Valley Conference honor.

Allumni Travels wide, sticks to roots A passion for basketball and helping kids drives Tim Natsues

Between the years of 1966 and 1968, Tim Natsues made a name for himself playing basketball for the Fresno City College Rams.

Natsues was coined a junior college All-American, and he was league and state scoring champion.

According to Natsues, under the coaching of FCC’s John Toomasian, he was the league MVP. “It was just awesome for me,” he said. “I got a lot of memories from Fresno City College.

Those were probably two of the best years of my educational life and probably my personal life and basketball wise as well.”

Natsues then went on to the 1968 Olympic trials.

Afterwards he attended the University of Kansas where he continued to play basketball for the Jayhawks.

In 1971 Natsues took his love for the game to Greece where he played for AEK, a professional Greek basketball team.

“That was a great experience because being of Greek heritage it was great to go back and see some of my family members that I’ve never met before,” he said.

“I was really enjoying myself. It was a great opportunity.”

In 1972, when he returned to the U.S., Natsues signed with Seattle SuperSonics as a free agent.

“Somebody had seen me play over in Europe,” Natsues said.

“A friend of mine knew an agent.

He gave me a call. So, I went up there, had a tryout and played through the exhibition season.”

Currently Natsues is an assistant basketball coach at Bullard High School, a job he enjoys.

“If you have passion to do what you do, that’s not really a job, that’s just having fun, and that’s what I find working with young kids,” Natsues said.

Natsues credits his father, a former high school basketball coach, for getting him involved in basketball from an early age.

He in turn passed a love for sports down to his children. He used to coach his son who then, also, played basketball for FCC before joining the marines.

Natsues said he still considers his fellow FCC team mates “near and dear friends.”

“We stay in contact periodically and once in a while we’ll get together and have a little reunion,” he said.

Natsues holds current FCC mens basketball coach, Ed Madec, in high regards.

He believes that the team is “blessed” to have him guiding the team. “I have the highest respect for Ed,” he said.

“I think what he does with those young men is phenomenal. He’s an outstanding teacher of basketball. My hat goes off to him.”

rams complete a vision of excellence The Fresno City College men’s basketball team defeated Yuba College 77-62 to take their fifth state championship in college history on Sunday. It was also the second state title for head coach Ed Madec.

In a first half filled with intensity and excitement, both teams traded shot for shot. Yuba rebounded well on the defensive end of the court, but faced problems as it appeared the Rams defense was too much to handle.

FCC switched back and forth from a full court press and a zone defense.

Madec’s perpetual substitutions, often substituting all five men, wore on the 49ers as the game went on.

The second half was controlled by FCCs ability to slow the game down and cutting away at Yuba’s chances to mount a comeback. At one point, the Rams expanded the lead to 16 points.

FCC sophomore captain Tomas Sanchez entertained the crowd with two alley-oop passes to freshman Alex Perez.

Rams sophomore DeAndre Medlock joined Sanchez with a fast break dunk that electrified the gymnasium and shifted momentum to the Rams, silencing the 49ers fans.

“We were just fortunate to get some good bounces and our defense kicked in the second half and we were able to control the boards better,” said Madec. “They dominated us on the glass in the first half, but we found our rhythm, calmed down, got the nerves

out and we were fortunate to get it done.”

Rams guard Alex Perez, who led FCC with 17 points, was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player along with fellow guard Marcus Hall who was named to the All-Tournament team.

“Glory to God. Without him none of us can be here. And we have the best coach in the country. He makes us work harder than anybody,” said Perez.

“We’re a brotherhood. We love each other. We go to work for each other every day. All the 6 a.m. workouts, all the ten liner days, the days on the track, the days in the weight room paid off.”

The Rams came into the game with added motivation as they felt they didn’t get the respect they deserve.

“We feel disrespected because we beat them in the regular season and they got a higher seed than us. We came in here, we had something to prove and we proved it,” said Hall. “We’ve been waiting for this all year. We work harder than any team in the country so to finally get this feels great. These guys are going to be my brothers forever.”

Though the Rams often made it look easy, Madec says the season and the match against Yuba was a grind. “Yuba College is a class operation,” said Madec. “Coach Cornelius has done a wonderful job with his team. We have so much respect for his team. They gave us a real fight. It was a lot of work but it was all worth it in the end.”
