Mallam Nuhu Ribadu Mallam Nuhu Ribadu was born November 11,1960. He was the former charismatic Nigerian Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) appointed by President Obasanjo, He graduated from the Nigerian Law School and was called to the bar in 1984, before joining the Nigeria Police, where he rose to become head of the Legal and Prosecution department, Police Headquarters, Abuja. His 18-year service in the Nigeria Police culminated in his appointment as the pioneer Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) by President Olusegun Obasanjo, in 2003. Ribadu has been recipient of several awards, as a police officer, prosecutor and Chairman, EFCC. He received triple Inspector General of Police Awards in 1997, 1998 and 2000 and the Special Commendation of the Accountant General of the Federation for successfully prosecuting some corrupt public servants, in 1999. Notable Nigerian newspapers including Thisday, The Sun, Leadership, Nigerian Tribune and NewAge, declared him Man of the Year in 2004 and 2005, in recognition of his outstanding achievements as a committed crusader against corruption and other related crimes. On April 15, 2008 ,The International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank) has selected Mallam Nuhu Ribadu for the Jit Memorial Award for Outstanding Public Service. The award is in recognition of Ribadu’s contributions to the campaign against financial crimes in Nigeria.

Ribadu successfully waged a comprehensive war against official sleaze leading to the arrest, prosecution and imprisonment of top government officials including governors, ministers, former leaders of the National Assembly and former Inspector General of Police. He was the ACN presidential candidate for the 2011 Nigerian presidential election. In 2012, President Jonathan Goodluck appointed him Chairman of Petroleum Revenue Task Force. Nuhu is a senior fellow at St. Anthony’s College at Oxford University in the UK. He was a former visiting fellow at the center for Global Development, USA. He is currently the Chairman of the Advisory Board, Operation Peace of Mind (OPM), a United States based International Nonprofit organization. He is married to Zara, also a lawyer, and they have five children.

It is my great pleasure to welcome you all to the 6th Annual Nsukka-USA Banquet and Partnership Fundraiser. Today is our maiden hometown convention and banquet in Nigeria, and we are extremely honored to have each and every of you here not only to celebrate with us but to initiate a longlasting partnership that will benefit Nsukka Land. The fact that many of you traveled long distances to graciously honor our invitation affirms the importance of the task ahead. A task that once fulfilled will validate the dreams and hopes that we all share to drive innovative and constructive changes in Nsukka, and in Nigeria. Nsukka is the place where many Nigerians from diverse lands and cultures have come to call home, and where yet many others maintain strong ties. Therefore, a path for greater heights for Nsukka is a path forward for all of us. Today, this historic gathering of Nd’Nsukka and friends of Nsukka marks an emerging renaissance for our hometown, and demonstrates a strong unity of purpose of a people. We have identified and pursuing two critical areas for initial impact
– Education and Healthcare – and focused all our energies to addressing them. The central thrust of NsukkaUSA Healthcare Program is to establish and sustainably operate an Ultramodern Medical Resources Center in Nsukka – a leading-edge healthcare facility that includes state-of-the-art Diagnostic Center, Comprehensive Patient Care Center, and Telemedicine Services. Over the past three years, members and friends of Nsukka-USA have made generous donations to support this effort. But, we understand that a project of this magnitude will require more collective and collaborative efforts in order to deliver the type and quality of healthcare that Nsukka deserves, and we anticipate that your strong partnership support in today’s fundraiser event will help us fully crystallize this goal. The theme of this year’s convention is “Partnership for Development” because we know that together we can all achieve more. We envision the establishment of the Center as a fruitful partnership project by Nsukka people home and in The Diaspora, as our initial effort to collectively deliver positive change to our community. The facility will be owned by all Nsukka people; Nsukka-USA will manage and operate the Center in trust for the people. We are here today to deliver hope rather than despair, to light a candle rather than curse the dark. We cannot do much about the past; we can only do something about the present and the future. Our tomorrow must be better than our today because that is the true sign of progress. We envision the day, soon, when Nsukka will become a medical hub in Nigeria as a result of the partnership formed today. As in the words of Walt Disney “All our dreams can come true - if we have the courage
to pursue them.” Distinguished ladies and gentlemen, Nsukka has you – successful men and women of high caliber – who are trailblazers in your respective callings. However, I must remind us all that no matter how highly we have achieved individually, our individual successes are still best measured by how successful we are collectively, as a people. We have gathered for the common purpose, which is to set our people and community on the path to growth and development. Our collective progressive journey must be one of courage, determination, and empowerment. The task before us is one that gives us hope because we know that with unity of purpose, we can accomplish more. Therefore, at the end of this event, I trust that we, as partners, can move from ambition to effort, from vision to mission. I am convinced that we who have gathered in this hall have the ability to accelerate historic progress and bring revolutionary healthcare services to our community. Of course, we, as Nsukka-USA, do not have all the answers, and that is why we trust in your strong partnership, and by partnering, we can deliver the positive change we all yearn to see in Nigeria, starting today in Nsukka. It is often said that “a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step”. Today is the beginning of a unifying and purposeful journey for us, as partners. I assure you that we shall reconvene in the near future to measure our progress and redirect our path if need be. In closing, with our task cut out for us, we have the opportunity to seize on this moment to build on our strengths and turn our challenges into goals. I trust that you are challenged, excited and inspired to be a part of this renaissance for Nsukka. Thank You For Your Partnership, And May God Continue To Bless You Richly.

NsukkaUSA at a Glance Nsukka-USA Inc is a US-registered not-for-profit and non-governmental organization incorporated in the state of Texas in 2006, and registered in Nigeria as Nsukka-USA Charitable Foundation. It is the umbrella organization of all indigenes of Nsukka Cultural Zone resident in the USA, comprising all persons from Igboeze-North, Igboeze-South, Igboetiti, Isi-Uzo, Nsukka, Udenu and Uzo Uwani local government areas of Enugu State. Our mission is to vigorously foster socioeconomic, educational and cultural development of Nsukka Land through collective investments in education, human capital development, delivery of critically-needed healthcare services and strengthening the unique and enviable cultures of Nsukka people. Our core values are driven by our dedication to quality, integrity, innovation, accountability, affordability and sustainability – the NUSA QIIAAS. At our maiden national convention in Houston, Texas in 2007, our members established the Vision 2017, a ten-year Integrated Effort toward Community Development through
Socioeconomic Empowerment and Healthcare Improvement. We then set out to articulate specific areas of focus and involvement. Our first project under the Socioeconomic Empowerment initiative is a human capital development program that invests in Nsukka rising stars by providing merit-based financial aid to undergraduates. This program was launched at our 2008 convention in Baltimore, Maryland. Since our 2009 convention in Los Angeles, California, we have awarded merit-based scholarships to 57 Nsukka students (14 per year, made up of two per local government) studying in various disciplines at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, including the 14 awards that were given yesterday as part of this year’s partnership convention. Our strategic goal is to support, in ten years, at least 140 undergraduates from Nsukka, with financial grants made possible through remarkable endowments by members of Nsukka-USA and our friends. We are glad that we are well on course towards achieving this goal. The Nsukka-USA Healthcare Program is focused on bringing healthcare of
international standards within the reach of every individual in Nsukka Land and Nigeria, through strong partnerships with Nsukka men and women, and friends of Nsukka. Over the past three years, our members and friends of Nsukka-USA have provided funding support for the establishment of an Ultramodern Medical Resources Center in Nsukka. This Center is the flagship of our Healthcare Program and will be a onestop leading-edge healthcare facility that will include stateof-the-art Diagnostic Center, Comprehensive Patient Care Center, and Telemedicine Services. We have fully committed ourselves to bringing unsurpassed and reliable diagnostic and leading edge patient care services to Nsukka. In so doing, we aim to position Nsukka as a medical pilgrimage center in Nigeria. At our 2011 convention in Dallas, Texas, we agreed to hold today’s partnership convention and fundraiser in Nsukka, for the very first time. We are glad that Nsukka and friends of Nsukka have come together here today to answer this crucial call to our society!

Maduka Onyishi - Man on a Mission Chief Samuel Maduka Onyishi, MD/CEO of Peace Mass Transit, recently recognized by President Goodluck Jonathan as a Member of the Order of Niger (MON) in acknowledgement of his contribution to Nigeria and humanity, is one of Nigeria’s leading entrepreneurs. He is a diamond partner of NsukkaUSA. Onyishi’s story is about resilience and determination, about defying incredible odds, and refusing to be defined by humble beginnings, plus incredible foresight. Sam Onyishi lost his father when he was still in the first year of high school, and he had to start fending for himself, his mother and siblings at an early age. He struggled and, many times, came close to giving up on his dream for higher education. He started a business in Kano but later abandoned it when he was admitted to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. At the university, he acquired more than a degree; he also started his transport business, Peace Mass Transit, for which he is better known today. Born in Nsukka in November 1963, Sam Onyishi was the first son

in a family of nine. His father, a brick layer, died in February 1977. Before his father’s death, Sam was attending Bubendorf Secondary School in Adazi, in Awka, Anambra State. The financial hardship facing his family meant limited options, and young Sam transferred to a school closer to home and entered Community Grammar Secondary School, Mbu in Isi Uzo Local Government Area. In school, Sam had only one pair of white khaki shorts and one white shirt instead of the required two sets. Even then, his enterprising spirit thrived. During his free time he would climb the cashew and mango trees around his school, pluck their fruits and then sell them to supplement whatever money his mother gave him. “I climbed these trees so often that I know those trees knew me by my name,” he said. Halfway through high school, he transferred to St Theresa’s College, Nsukka because of more financial hardship. He dreamt of being a lawyer, but his dreams were just that – dreams. He knew that his financial situation would make it impossible to continue after the secondary school. He applied for a job but lost the chance because he did not have two Naira to bribe a messenger. “That was my first encounter with what they call the ‘Nigerian factor,’” he said. He tried his hands in many things, including pushing barrows and conducting buses. With N1,200 paid to his family by the university, he went into second hand clothes business and later moved to Kano in 1987. By 1989, he had saved up N12,000 and then went to learn motor spare parts business for 24 days before setting up his own. and then set up my own. Within five years, he had saved as much as N260, 000 in his bank account. He then returned to the university to get the education he always promised himself. When he started his lectures as a student, he discovered he had plenty of time in his hands. So he went back to Kano and withdrew the N260, 000
in his account and purchased two buses. On weekdays, he drove the bus after his lectures; on weekends, he worked fulltime. “My going into transport business was like a film. At the time, I was only doing it to support myself in school, but before I knew it, I had moved from the initial two buses to eight,” he said. Onyishi went into contract with Nsukka Local Government so he could use their name; His company was then was called Nsukka Mass Transit. The number of buses continued to grow, and when he was graduating in 1999 he had up to 45 buses. He changed his business name to Peace Mass Transit and applied and got a private park, and it was granted. He was the first person to own the first mini bus private park in Nsukka, Enugu, Onitsha, Aba, Abakaliki, Owerri, Njuba Abuja. “Then it was almost impossible, but God was with me,” Onyishi said. Peace Mass Transit (PMT) has blossomed into not the foremost road transport business in Nigeria with over 3,000 buses, but also the fastest growing mass transit business in West Africa. It has grown into what is now known as the Peace Group of Companies comprising of multi-faceted enterprises in varied fields. Onyishi said that God talks to him in dreams and directs him on whatever he wants to do and that guides his business decisions. His Peace Foundation which was set up in 1998 has empowered over 640 young men and women through start-up business capitals and awarded scholarships to many students in different higher institutions of learning in Nigeria. He has donated infrastructure and tons of amenities to institutions of higher learning and the police force. For his contributions to community development, Onyishi has received numerous awards and chieftaincy titles including, Friends of the Masses, by Rotary Club of Enugu, Community Service Awards by University of Nigeria Alumni Association; Friend of students and by the Students Union Government of UNN. He has also been accorded numerous chieftaincy titles.

After twenty-nine years of foundational groundwork, Operation Peace of Mind (OPM), otherwise referred to as the Nigerian-American Center for Peace and Development, was founded in the year 2002, and is a charitable organization under section 501(c)3 of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code. The organization is involved in community development, education, crime prevention, healthcare, and agriculture. OPM recognizes that Nigerians must take steps to unlock Nigeria’s possibilities. The organization’s programs primarily are intended to support agendas of governments, entrepreneurs, professionals, and organizations for the ultimate benefit of our citizens, especially the disadvantaged. OPM is not a substitute for efforts and programs that rightfully must be undertaken by governments or the private sector.
