ISSX President’s Message By John O. Miners, ISSX President 2014 has been a good year for ISSX. The Society held two successful scientific meetings, our financial position is strong, and planning for future meetings and several new initiatives is well advanced. As I indicated in a previous issue of the Newsletter, the 5th Asia Pacific Meeting, which was held in Tianjin, China had 550 participants and approximately 300 poster presentations. The meeting was hosted by our affiliate partner, the Chinese Society for the Study of Xenobiotics (CSSX). The joint 19th North American ISSX / 29th JSSX Meeting, held from October 19–23 in San Francisco, was also an outstanding success. Like our previous joint meeting with JSSX in Maui in 2005, there were over 1,100 attendees and more than 600 abstracts. The standard of the scientific presentations and posters was excellent, and the meeting was well-supported by exhibitors. Drs. Tetsuya Terasaki and Eric Johnson, the meeting co-chairs, and their colleagues on the Meeting Organizing
Committee, are to be congratulated for their efforts on behalf of ISSX and JSSX and for delivering such a high quality conference. Given the success of our two previous joint meetings with JSSX, our two Societies have agreed to hold another joint meeting in 2020. Two meetings are scheduled for 2015. The 13th European ISSX Meeting will be held in Glasgow from June 22–25. The call for abstracts for this meeting is now open and the scientific program is available on the ISSX website. The 20th North American ISSX Meeting will be held in Orlando from October 18-22. Two scientific awards will be presented at each of these meetings. The ISSX Awards Program recognizes the scientific and service achievements of our members. Nominations are currently being accepted for awards that will be presented in Glasgow: the European New Investigator Award (in honor of Karl J. Netter) and the European Scientific Achievement Award. Members are urged to nominate colleagues who may
be eligible for these awards – details on the nomination process are available on the ISSX website. ISSX will sponsor the participation of four speakers to attend the Drug Metabolism and Pharmacokinetics Symposium at the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) to be held in Mohali, India in February 2015. Our formal participation in the NIPER Symposium follows negotiations initiated by past-President Bill Smith. ISSX involvement in India is consistent with key objectives of the Society’s Strategic Plan: increasing internationalization, expanding scientific outreach, and growing membership. “Lies, damned lies and statistics” (late 19th century quotation). Having offended, probably but unintentionally, half of the readership of this newsletter with above adage, an explanation is required. Slightly out of context, these words here are meant to indicate that without the correct and sagacious application of statistics potentially erroneous conclusions may be drawn which, to all intent and purpose except under close scrutiny, appear sound. It is essential that appropriate tests be applied under suitable and acceptable circumstances for meaningful results to be obtained, and that these results are always considered within the constraints and context of the system from which they were derived. This book is a new member of the “Statistics in Practice” series, a set of mathematical texts that offer detailed explanation and coverage of statistical concepts, describe the relevant methodology, and guide the reader through the use of worked case examples. They are invaluable reference books for those working within a defined field. This particular volume addresses the “challenging
issues of the design, execution, and management of clinical trials,” describing in clear terms the application of statistical methods to safety evaluation during the various stages of product development, through the clinical domain and beyond into the medical world at large. Fifteen authors have constructed fourteen chapters, six written solely by the editor. Following an introductory segment the chapter titles are: Safety graphics; QSAR modelling: Prediction of biological activity from chemical structure; Ethical and practical issues in Phase I trials in healthy volunteers; Phase I trials; Summarizing adverse event risk; Statistical analysis of recurrent adverse events; Cardiovascular toxicity, especially QT/QTc prolongation; Hepatic toxicity; Neurotoxicity; Safety monitoring; Sequential testing for safety evaluation; Evaluation of postmarketing safety using spontaneous reporting databases; Pharmacovigilance using observational/longitudinal databases and web-based information. Toxicity aspects are focussed on the liver, nervous, and cardiovascular systems, particularly the heart. This is not surprising, as for the past decade or so drug regulators have recommended/required that all compounds be evaluated for their effects upon the QT interval and
potential arrhythmic consequences. The text is complemented by the inclusion of comprehensive references to the relevant medical literature (as well as insights into SAS and R codes [computer statistic programming languages]) and, as usual, the physical construction of the volume is excellent. Highly recommended for all those who work within, or are about to enter into, this fascinating world of drug development and associated areas. A worthwhile tome for every bookshelf.

19th North American ISSX / 29th JSSX Meeting Review On October 19, 2014, academic researchers, industry scientists, and students gathered in San Francisco, California, USA for the 19th North American ISSX / 29th JSSX Meeting. Meeting Organizing Committee Chairs, Tetsuya Terasaki, Ph.D. of the Tohoku University and Eric Johnson, Ph.D. of the Scripps Research Institute and their Meeting Organizing Committee created an outstanding program addressing a broad variety of topics in the science of xenobiotics. This meeting hosted more than 1,150 scientists from 34 nations including India, Japan, and the Republic of Korea. Three hundred and eighty-four meeting registrants arrived early to attend short courses on Sunday, October 19. The courses covered a variety of topics including the prediction of drug-drug interactions and regulatory recommendations, metabolite biosynthesis and quantitation by NMR spectroscopy, non-CYP metabolism in drug discovery, and the use of DMPK and drug-drug interaction data. The meeting officially commenced with the Opening Welcome remarks from JSSX President, Dr. Kan Chiba, ISSX President, Dr. John Miners, the meeting co-chairs, and Meeting Dedicatee, Dr. Yuichi Sugiyama. The scientific meeting began with two plenary lectures. “Mechanistic Modeling of Bile Acid-mediated Drug-induced Liver Injury” was presented by Dr. Kim Brouwer of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and “Contributions of the Human Gut Microbiome to Drug Metabolism” was presented by Dr. Peter Turnbaugh of the University of California San Francisco. Following these captivating lectures, attendees met in the exhibit hall for the Opening Welcome Reception to see colleagues and friends, and to spend time with over 60 companies exhibiting their products and services at the meeting.

On Tuesday, October 21, ISSX presented the 2014 ISSX North American Scientific Achievement Award in Honor of Ronald W. Estabrook and sponsored by XenoTech. This year’s award recipient was Thomas A. Baillie, Ph.D. The 2014 ISSX North American Young Investigator Award, in Honor of James R. Gillette, was also presented to Nina Isoherranen, Ph.D. Both Dr. Baillie and Dr. Isoherranen presented lectures after receiving their awards at the podium.

We have experienced fiscal years during which expenses were greater than revenues; however, the Society’s total net assets have consistently exceeded total operating expenses. Thanks to prudent financial management by successive Councils and the ISSX Office I am pleased to report steadily increasing net assets in recent years. Total net assets at the end of 2014 are projected to be close to $1.9 million. Of this amount, about one-third is restricted funds associated with the ISSX Awards Program. The remainder is for the purpose of maintaining a reserve fund for the protection of the Society and for the development of strategic initiatives intended to provide benefits to the membership. Finally, to ISSX members and their families: season’s greetings and best wishes for a happy, productive and prosperous New Year from ISSX Council and the ISSX Office.

Throughout the five-day meeting, lectures on a variety of stimulating topics were delivered in parallel symposia which each included invited speakers as well as abstract authors selected to give short presentations from their abstracts. Evaluation data collected as of the writing of this report indicates highly favorable assessment of the scientific sessions with 93 percent of responders rating the sessions as essential and useful. The meeting included an optional event aboard the yacht, The San Francisco Spirit. Participants enjoyed a dinner buffet and a three hour cruise through San Francisco Bay featuring Alcatraz Island, the Golden Gate Bridge, the art deco Coit Tower, the iconic Transamerica Building, and much more.

SOCIAL PROGRAM Opening Welcome Reception Start the meeting at the Opening Welcome Reception in the exhibition and poster area of the Technology and Innovation Centre on Monday, June 22. Civic Reception The Glasgow City Council will welcome ISSX to Glasgow with a Civic Reception on Tuesday, June 23 at 18:30 to include a complimentary beverage. This unique event will be held in the prestigious surroundings of the City Chambers in the Picture Gallery which was opened in 1888. The Lord Provosts of the City will be in attendance to greet delegates and welcome you to Glasgow. The City Chambers is in the very heart of Glasgow and is one of the city’s most important and prestigious buildings. A grand and imposing edifice overlooking George Square, the City Chambers is an impressive symbol of Glasgow’s political strength and historical wealth. Completed in 1888, the City Chambers has for over 100 years been the headquarters of successive councils serving the City of Glasgow. GENERAL INFORMATION Accommodations ISSX has arranged for special rates at several hotels in different price categories in the area near the Technology and Innovation Centre in Glasgow. The hotels are within walking distance to the meeting facility. Attendees are welcome to secure lodging at alternative venues.
