ISSX President’s Message By Scott Obach, ISSX President Greetings Fellow ISSX Members– This will be the last president’s message from me as my term ends at the end of 2023, and I hand the reins over to Aleksandra Galetin. Over the past two years I’ve had the pleasure of working with Alex, as she has been taking an increasing lead in the deliberations of Council, in preparation for her role as president in full. We will be in excellent hands!! I’m pleased to announce a new change to the ISSX meeting policies. Over the past several years, we have witnessed a backlash against progress made across the world regarding honoring the rights of groups that have been marginalized based on sex, race, gender, sexual orientation, and other characteristics. While we are first and foremost a science society, we are also a society comprised
of fellow human beings, and the Council felt it appropriate to take an official stand against prejudice, discrimination, and hate. The ISSX Council has composed and approved a position statement, which was communicated at the opening of the 25th North American ISSX Meeting in Boston.
“As a scientific society, the ultimate goal of ISSX is to promote science that will improve the health and welfare of humankind. Humankind encompasses everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, religion, and ability, and all are deserving of respect and care. ISSX hosts various conferences and events in locations around the world. All participants are welcome to these events in a safe and healthy environment. In this spirit, our policy is to preferentially consider venues that foster
acceptance and basic human rights.” This was greeted with spontaneous applause. I am so proud of us for this. Granted, Scott Obach we’re a small ISSX President society and our act of choosing to avoid having conferences in locales that have espoused discriminatory practices may go unnoticed, but every bit counts. If you happen to reside in one of these locations, please do your best to make your local officials aware of our position. We all share responsibility in making the world a better place.
