OVERVIEW
2018-2019
Our story in making a difference for tomorrow
Our Johnson & Johnson Purpose
We blend Science and Ingenuity to profoundly change the trajectory of health for humanity.
Every day, every Johnson & Johnson employee gives the best of himself or herself to help achieve this ambition. What I find hugely important in that is that we do this while giving special attention to socially vulnerable groups. That includes children from disadvantaged neighborhoods. People with a mental, physical or intellectual disability and the many caregivers who take care of others 24/7, without vacations, downtime and sometimes even without any help. We live in a fast-changing, uncertain world. Issues like poverty, discrimination, depression and obesity are in the news on a daily basis. Rarely are these individual choices; often they are caused by the circumstances in which people grow up and live. With J&J Benelux, we choose to be a driver to: - Implement a sustainable business strategy (which is more than a separate sustainability strategy). - Create awareness of the UN SDGs and encourage individual initiatives to this end. - Co-create, with all stakeholders, to initiate systemic change on social issues linked to our Community Impact strategy, based on the SDGs.
Fortunately, there are bright spots. For example, the United Nations has set 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which together constitute a positive agenda for creating a better world by 2030. The UN emphasizes the “shared responsibility” of governments, NGOs, all citizens and multinationals like J&J. I very strongly believe that we can help achieve these goals and, at the same time, our main goal too (“sustainable health care for all”). In embracing this change, daring and perseverance are essential. Only “genuine” cooperation, based on equality, and involving all stakeholders, will accelerate sustainable innovation. In this report you will read more about what we do, why we do it and how we do it. We immerse you in projects in which, together with our partner organizations, we make a difference. These are the stories that motivate and inspire me each and every day. I am very proud of the achievements and advancements we have made, but I acknowledge that we still have much to do. Let’s work together, as responsible global citizens, to achieve sustainable health for all! SONJA WILLEMS, Managing Director Janssen Benelux
We are working intensively with the Johnson & Johnson Corporate Citizenship Trust. Johnson & Johnson Benelux works closely with the Johnson & Johnson Corporate Citizenship Trust to set up and support innovative partnerships that respond to local health needs and challenges. This enables Janssen Benelux to tackle local health needs and to set up high-quality, mutually supportive partnerships. Several projects are co-created and co-funded by the Trust and J&J operating companies in EMEA, enabling us to reach almost 100,000 people.

OUR MISSION
We work towards sustainable health care for EVERYONE! INNOVATION COMES FROM A GENUINE PARTNERSHIP WITH ALL STAKEHOLDERS We take care of socially vulnerable groups close to home, in the Benelux, through GROW Together for Society, J&J Benelux’s Community Impact program.
Community Impact is the term J&J uses to show what we do for society, especially with regard to the health and wellbeing of our fellow human beings. GROW Together for Society has a clear goal: giving whoever needs it the power to realize their full potential in society! To achieve this goal, we want to work on three engagements: PROMOTING EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AND DAY CARE FOR CHILDREN J&J wants to give young people opportunities in education, among other things by giving them access to role models. This also includes child day care initiatives. SUPPORTING HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS, PAYING PARTICULAR ATTENTION TO CAREGIVERS J&J is committed to giving information to caregivers and enhancing the mental strength of caregivers and their families.
IMPROVING ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE Here, we focus on providing health care to vulnerable groups. There are still communities that find it hard to access regular basic health care. We help them by removing obstacles, both social and economic. HOW DO WE DO THIS? • We
invest in sustainable partnerships: we provide financial support to organizations to set up and implement joint projects.
• We
encourage all J&J employees in the Benelux to do voluntary work: this may be by offering a helping hand (on CARE days) or by doing skills-based voluntary work (mentoring programs).
• We
invest in social innovation and social entrepreneurship.
We maximize our impact in an overarching approach that builds on the strengths and needs of each interest group.
PEGGY VAN CASTEREN, MANAGER COMMUNITY IMPACT BENELUX
“We invest in social innovation. This is more than innovation, it is transformation.”
KRIS STERKENS, COMPANY GROUP CHAIRMAN JANSSEN EMEA
“We can help shape a future in which sustainable health care for all can be achieved.”
OUR VALUES, OUR ROOTS
“We CARE about the world” the SDGs as framework 75 years ago Robert W. Johnson wrote the charter of values, “Our Credo”. In four paragraphs the credo sets out the ground rules for optimal relations between all J&J employees and companies, and patients, consumers, employees, society as a whole and shareholders.
The commitment to sustainability in social, ecological and economic terms is clearly conveyed. This sustainability idea remains very important to J&J to this day.
IN SHORT, WE CARE... The UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals are ultimately about caring, which is exactly what J&J’s goals are about.
As well as our GROW Together for Society activities, J&J Benelux also clearly drives its organization towards a broader sustainability policy, based on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals Framework.
Today, the 2030 Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs) are ubiquitous. These 17 goals offer a positive agenda for a better world, for individuals as well as organizations.
"Corporate social responsibility is the right way of doing business", Stef Heylen, CEO Janssen Belgium, Knack July 2018.
PROF. DR. WAYNE VISSER
“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
Cooperation is key to achieving the SDGs. With that in mind, we partnered up with Antwerp Management School (AMS). We work with Professor Wayne Visser’s Sustainable Transformation Lab to describe and integrate these SDGs in our business strategy. We are also working on an SDG dashboard, a monitor that stimulates investment in future sustainability by our organization.
Meanwhile, we introduce all J&J employees to the SDGs in interactive workshops and team building events. It is particularly enriching to see how many colleagues and departments within J&J are now developing individual initiatives to make a big contribution to creating a better world for everyone.

FIGURES Worldwide: More than 365 houses, 213 lounges and 50 Care Mobiles. More than 1900 volunteers, donors and sponsors like J&J Benelux. 2017 The Netherlands: 6,645 families stayed in Ronald McDonald houses, 68,649 nights in total.
Ronald McDonald Children's Fund opens first House in Belgium, 13 already open in the Netherlands.
Cuddles before bed Ronald McDonald Children’s Fund In the Benelux, the Ronald McDonald Children's Fund (part of the international Ronald McDonald House Charities organization) builds Ronald McDonald Houses near large hospitals. Families of hospitalized children can stay there overnight. Parents can be at their child’s bedside within just a few short minutes for a cuddle if their child is afraid or in pain. This sense of security and emotional support is key to helping children heal faster. With this initiative, the Children's Fund aims to act as a catalyst in Family Centered Care. As well as Houses, it also builds Lounges in hospitals where parents can escape the feeling of being in a hospital for a short while. These are places where they can read a book or make difficult decisions about their child’s treatment undisturbed. The Children's Fund also converts trucks into Care Mobiles (mobile hospitals).
www.kinderfonds.nl and www.kinderfonds.be
INNOVATIONS THANKS TO J&J BENELUX J&J supported this great initiative with campaigns like HomeRide (a sponsored Ronald McDonald Children's Fund bike tour). Some 3,900 Children’s Fund cuddly toys were made in 2017 with the support of J&J (symbolizing the cuddle at bedtime) and a house with 10 family rooms will open in Jette in 2019. In the Netherlands, in 2018, with J&J’s support a parent lounge for 50 families opened at the Leiden University Medical Center, while the lounge at the Princess Máxima Center (innovative pediatric oncology center) was renovated. A specially adapted outdoor space was also created at the Ronald McDonald Homestead to allow disabled children to play without a care. The HomeRide was held for the eighth time in 2018. This 500km bike tour calls at every Ronald McDonald house in the Netherlands. This year, the 80 Dutch teams were joined by a Belgian Janssen team. Not just any team, though. The ten-member team were exclusively made up of firefighters.

Polderwind Domain is a Red Cross Flanders initiative.
The first care hotel on the Polderwind Domain, officially opened in 2018 Polderwind Domain There is a very big demand for specially adapted holiday accommodation for disabled people in Flanders. So Red Cross Flanders made a conscious decision to build its own care hotel in Flanders to give more people who require care and their caregivers the chance to enjoy a holiday. Polderwind Domain is located at Zuienkerke in the heart of the polders, between historic Bruges and the seaside resort Blankenberge. INNOVATIONS THANKS TO J&J J&J enabled the purchase of a wheelchair bus. This makes the holiday experience even more intense. People with severe care needs can now enjoy a day trip to the coast or the city. We are examining ways to intensify this partnership along with Red Cross Flanders and the director of Polderwind Domain.

HIV and STIs: break the taboo
© Frédéric Pauwels
Doctors of the World
Doctors of the World goes beyond care provision by taking legal action against violations of human dignity and human rights and fighting for the wellbeing of people in Belgium and around the world. TABOO People who cannot otherwise access care can get free medical, social and psychological care at the Doctors of the World health care centers. Patients in the center of Antwerp were often found to exhibit risk behavior with regard to HIV and other STIs because they were poorly or wrongly informed. Referred patients never turned up at STI testing centers, partly because of the continuing taboo about HIV and sexual health. With that in mind, a rapid HIV test and counseling were added to the dropin consultations. Thirteen volunteers followed intensive training for this, in association with the Institute of Tropical Medicine and Sensoa.
www.doktersvandewereld.org
As well as HIV consultations at the health center, outreach campaigns are now run to spread information about HIV and STIs, contraception, and sexual and reproductive health. The fact that 49% of people who have had more than one sexual partner in the past year never or only occasionally used a condom shows that risk reduction and counselling are much-needed. FERTILE PARTNERSHIP WITH J&J Doctors of the World and J&J started working together in 2015, offering rapid HIV tests in Antwerp.

10 IMC Weekend Schools in Amsterdam, The Hague, Groningen, Nijmegen, Rotterdam, Tilburg and Utrecht. In 2017-2018, TADA helped
637 teenagers and families directly.
TADA students: 8 out of 10 in attendance every weekend, 9 out of 10 active in the alumni network, and 9 out of 10 still at school in traditional education. TADA volunteers: 9 out of 10 are fully persuaded of the desired effect on the target group and have learned something from the TADA experience.
In our complex society, it’s very important to make the right choices. This demands experience: see, hear and do.
Arming teens against demotivation VZW ToekomstATELIERdelAvenir (TADA) & IMC Weekendschool IMC Weekendschool in the Netherlands and TADA in Belgium give young people from underprivileged neighborhoods the chance to meet working people and see what they do on a daily basis. That enables them to find out what they like and what they don’t like while they are still young, which helps them with their future decisions. At the weekend schools, hundreds of teenagers aged 10-14 follow lessons given by people who work at J&J partner companies. Judges, biochemists, cooks and mechanics give classes on their specialist subject, giving the kids an idea of what they could be doing after they leave school. IMC Weekendschool and TADA work to motivate the teenagers in their lives: with a positive self-image, well-informed about themselves and society.

PARTNERSHIPS WITH COMPANIES LIKE J&J ARE ESSENTIAL J&J’s human and financial support has had and continues to have a direct impact in Belgium and the Netherlands, and there are more and more opportunities to increase the indirect impact of this movement. For example, the report on the visit of TADA teenagers to J&J Geel’s chemical production site shown on Flemish TV created a lot of interest in the project. More and more initiatives inspired by these networks are being set up and the community is driving a wider movement in Belgium and the Netherlands towards greater involvement of citizens and business in the education of our vulnerable young people, thanks to J&J among others.

FIGURES 2018: 3rd edition of the Social Grow Sessions. 14 social entrepreneurs began a new course in September. In the past two editions, they were able to give guidance to 22 organizations and 6 finalists were awarded a cash price of up to 15,000 euros in connection with the Social Grow Sessions.
Social Grow Sessions, a dynamic, interactive coaching scheme for (rookie) social entrepreneurs and social profit organizations that want to combine social impact with financial wellbeing.
Solutions for a better society Social Grow Sessions J&J companies in the Benelux and the J&J Corporate Citizenship Trust have joined forces in the Sociale InnovatieFabriek and Social Enterprise NL to support the growing social enterprise movement. Together they organize the Social Grow Sessions. In three multi-day bootcamps, the candidates’ social business plan is fleshed out and all potential growth opportunities for the concept are examined. The unique mix of Dutch and Belgian specialists and a Janssen and J&J additional mentorship program makes the Social Grow Sessions an indispensable experience for all social entrepreneurs. Kaat Peeters, director of the Sociale InnovatieFabriek: “What started out as a curious participation in a Johnson & Johnson workshop has now spawned 35 reinforced social enterprises, an exciting mentor network and a book.”
‘ZAKEN DIE JE RAKEN’ A Belgian and two Dutch people met each other at the Social Grow Sessions and decided to write a book on social entrepreneurship. In an inspiring no-nonsense style, they describe how social entrepreneurs from Belgium and the Netherlands have an impact on major societal issues such as land distribution, energy consumption, inclusion, circularity, climate change, loneliness and poverty. This book is full of stories about social entrepreneurs who work to create a better world in Belgium and the Netherlands, who they are, how they get funding, who they work with. They are not just young idealists. More often they are public servants, care professionals and employees of large corporations who want to drive change based on their indignation about a specific social problem.

The J&J Social Grow Sessions have already produced impactful results. Examples include the reintegration of young people through Beestig Wijs, child care Villa Clementina and job coaching by Rising You(th).
Social Grow Sessions in practice BEESTIG WIJS Behavioral counselling, day care and dog walking service for owners in need. Help to adopt shelter dogs. Medical care and food for pets of the underprivileged. Beestig Wijs social entrepreneurs work with 25-30 vulnerable youngsters and disabled people without receiving any form of government subsidy. Both target groups are given the chance to learn about real life and get involved in entrepreneurship in the learning and care courses. With the input of the J&J Social Grow Sessions, after a market study Beestig Wijs revised its business model (to ensure sustainability) and set up a co-creation platform (to further increase the impact). www.beestigbezig.be is the Beestig Wijs co-creation platform. VILLA CLEMENTINA This wide-ranging, inclusive child care is available for children with and without extra care needs. Guidance is provided by a mixed team of professionals, volunteers and young disabled people. Villa Clementina currently has space for 40 children. One in three have extra care needs. Children who are not ready to go to school when they turn two and a half follow special education up to age 6, with support from a speech therapist and physiotherapist. On her fifth birthday, this winner of the first edition of the Social Grow Sessions welcomed some important visitors: Minister Jo van Deurzen and Sonja Willems (Managing Director
Janssen Benelux) spoke about the importance of partnerships between profit and non-profit organizations. www.villaclementina.be RISING YOU(TH) The National Bank of Belgium predicts that two out of three refugees will be unemployed by 2020 and those who are in work will be doing a job that does not match their skills and training. Experience shows that this inevitably leads to demotivation. Rising You(th) helps them find a job they enjoy and that suits their skills by reactivating their mental resilience and physical possibilities. At the climbing club, the youngsters follow an integrated course that results in a certificate stating that they are properly trained to work at height as painters of high-voltage masts, telecom system installers or wind turbine service technicians. At the end of the course, Rising You(th) works actively to bring these people into contact with employers seeking temporary or permanent staff trained to work at height. www.nature.be/nl/risingyou/
NEW PROJECTS
SOS Children’s Villages in Mersch (Luxembourg) GOOD NEWS FOR LUXEMBOURG!
No fewer than 220 million children around the world grow up without the loving care of a family. This is a serious threat to their safety, development and future. SOS Children's Villages ensures that these children have a warm home, so they can be children and develop into strong adults. Europe obviously has totally different problems from countries like Congo or Haiti. That means the projects have completely different priorities. They focus on care and guidance for children who are not safe at home, for whatever reason. Sometimes families seek out help themselves; sometimes an order is handed down by a juvenile court.
MISSION OF SOS CHILDREN’S VILLAGES
“No child should grow up alone.”
J&J Benelux works with SOS Children’s Villages in Mersch, SOS Kannerduerf (Luxembourg). We have gotten to know Karin Kirsch, a passionate employee of SOS Children’s Villages and an expert in trauma pedagogy. In her graduation project she created a mindmap to help aid workers give assistance to trauma victims. J&J will work with Karin to give this tool a broader range of uses.
Special Olympics Belgium and the Netherlands J&J WILL WORK WITH SPECIAL OLYMPICS IN BELGIUM AND THE NETHERLANDS
Belgium alone is home to 165,000 people with an intellectual disability. No fewer than one million Belgians are directly and indirectly affected. Special Olympics Belgium reaches 12,500 athletes and 6,500 volunteers in Belgium. Based on its Healthy Athletes Program, Special Olympics notes that these athletes are in a distressing state of health. A huge number have foot problems; many have problems with their eyes, ears and teeth.
We want to work with Special Olympics to break this taboo. We focus on creating awareness through educational programs in primary health care. At the same time, we are setting up sports competitions in which Special Olympic athletes challenge our J&J athletes.
ENACTUS INTRODUCING LEADERS OF TOMORROW TO SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Enactus is a platform that brings students and universities into contact with corporations to tackle social problems through social entrepreneurship. It focuses on innovation and inclusive business models. The program empowers students and delivers tangible results for the participating partners. Students put together a –multi-disciplinary –Enactus team and launch a project as a social enterprise to tackle a social problem. They are assisted by the Enactus methodology and a mentor from an organization.
J&J is an Enactus team launch partner in Belgium. In phase one, ten J&J millennials visit universities and colleges to start new Enactus projects along with ten millennials at KPMG. In phase two, they are supervised by senior leaders at these organizations. We have already started working with UAntwerpen, UGent, VUB, UNamur and the Thomas More Hogeschool. There are national competitions every year, with the winners representing their country at the Enactus Cup. DUO for a JOB WE BRING TOGETHER JOB-SEEKING YOUNGSTERS WITH A MIGRATION BACKGROUND AND VOLUNTEERS AGED 50+
DUO for a JOB brings together job-seeking youngsters with a migration background and volunteers aged 50 and over who want to deploy their experience to coach these young people in their quest for work. Through this intergenerational and intercultural mentoring, DUO for a JOB sets itself the goal of helping create equal access to the labor market for all. “DUO for a JOB is very valuable within J&J Benelux: we make a difference by providing these young people with insights and professional experience, which delivers added value for their integration and finding a suitable career, hopefully even within our organization.” Karin Van Baelen, Head of Global Regulatory Affairs Once a duo has been confirmed, the young person and the mentor meet for at least two hours a week for six months. “DUO for a JOB offers high personal reward for mentor and mentee and is an eye-opening experience.” Guy Nuyts, Senior Director Global Pricing “DUO for a JOB is an exceptionally valuable initiative that deserves full support. As a mentor you can make a very concrete and personal contribution for society. Our credo in action!” Bart Philips, VP Legal Affairs J&J wants to deliver ten coaches in 2019 to contribute to a more inclusive society and corporate culture.
DID YOU KNOW? - More than 950 J&J volunteers have worked on a CARE DAY for 9450 beneficiaries, spread over 34 non-profits in Belgium and 18 foundations in the Netherlands. That is 7240 hours of voluntary work! - Five people with an occupational disability spent a day with a J&J employee on DUO Day, in association with GTB (specialized pathway determination and guidance). - Twenty-eight Amival employees (people with an occupational disability) work in J&J projects, some onsite, others at the new Amival health care building, which accommodates cleanrooms and airconditioned spaces. - The “Warmste Week” has been embraced with open arms. Sports activities, a Sinterklaas breakfast and a Christmas market are all being organized for 30 charities in the neighborhood under the motto “Everyone helping everyone”. J&J is represented on a massive scale at the Warmathon.
