Another brilliant graduation ceremony was held at Māori Battalion Marae celebrating a very successful year for the Tūranga Ararau students. Guest speaker was Te Urikore Biddle, a former graduate of of Tūranga Ararau who continued on to complete a BA Hons at Waikato University, a MA at Victoria University and is a PhD candidate with the New Zealand School of Music. Currently, she is Acting Dean, Teaching and Learning Mātauranga Māori at Unitec. It was absolutely awesome listening to her sharing her inspiring kōrero with our rangatahi.

New Chief Executive for Tāmanuhiri Tutu Poroporo Trust Announced Tāmanuhiri Tūtū Poroporo Trust Chair, Shane Kawenata Bradbrook, said the Board is very pleased to announce Ms Rauna’s appointment and believed her experience and skills were a very appropriate fit in regard to where the Iwi was heading.

“Ms Rauna’s extensive experience in working in the tribal space particularly in Tūranga, coupled with governance and the public sector, will prove beneficial for the Iwi going forward,” he said.

“With Ms Rauna’s appointment to the role of Chief Executive we are confident that we will continue to maintain the momentum of the Trust in a post settlement environment and deliver on our strategic objectives for this financial year and beyond,” he said.

Ms Rauna said she was looking forward to starting in the role in the New Year with the Trust.

“With a great team in place and several key projects underway there are some great opportunities and developments ahead, and I am very excited to be part of it,” she said. Ms Rauna currently lives in Whataupoko, Gisborne and has an adult son Tawhitirangi.

Toko Toru Tapu Chuch Rededication Toko Toru Tapu Church has ministered to the Manutuke community for over 100 years.

It was re-consecrated following an extensive restoration at a weekend celebration on Saturday 27 and 28 November 2015. Manutuke Marae and the Anglican Church hosted a glorious 2 day hui.

Te Maungārongo Kia Orana koutou, With Christmas nearing there are many things to prepare for from a policing perspective. We expect more vehicles on our roads including visitors to our region and speed and alcohol will be our focus.

Slowing down saves lives. Every driver needs to play their part in keeping our roads safe. Alcohol and driving do not mix, there have been some unfortunate drink driving results in some of our rural towns recently which is really disappointing.

NOT DRIVING after drinking alcohol is everyone's responsibility, not just the drivers. If you know that someone intends to drive after drinking, say something whānau. Don't let them drive! There are other alternatives such as having a sober driver, driving to your destination but taxi home, stay the night where you are or arrange to be picked up by a sober whānau member. We need to shift the culture of drinking alcohol then driving. Again, it is everyone's responsibility otherwise we will continue with the status quo; fatal and serious crashes involving our loved ones.

We expect family violence to increase over the festive season. All the stress leading up to and beyond Christmas can be a lot for some of our whānau to manage. I have been working with a group of NGO/Iwi providers and church groups over the past month focusing on how we can better support each other leading up to, and beyond, Christmas. Police are currently working with a group of whānau and have developed victim intervention plans. These plans are now being further enhanced as these providers will also engage our whānau to develop whānau safety plans. We have a fabulous support network in Tairāwhiti that we have pulled together and are sharing our resources with each other. Everyone has put their hand up to help out and we are all focused on a safe Christmas for whānau.

I am proud of our police achievements in 2015, our crime has reduced in a number of areas including burglary, public place violence and damage to property to name a few. We have not been able to do this alone; we have worked alongside a number of agencies, NGO and Iwi to make these changes. We have looked at alternative means to prosecution as a way forward and this has meant some awesome outcomes for offenders, their whānau and our victims. This doesn't just happen; it takes a collaborative approach, everyone on the same page, focused on the very best outcomes for our whānau.

A huge thank you to my staff who do a great job within their communities from Kotemaori in the south to Te Araroa in the north, all working together to keep everyone safe. In December I am putting on a thank you dinner at the police station for all our volunteers who have supported police throughout the year in achieving safer communities. A big shout out to our Māori Wardens throughout Tairāwhiti who do amazing mahi on our Marae, in our towns, on our streets and amongst our tamariki in schools.

Keep safe whānau, look after one another and look forward to serving you all in 2016.

Employment issues still remain one of the highest legal priorities in my office. As the season of casual employment begins be mindful of your employment rights.

Casual employees A casual employee works for you intermittently or irregularly, eg someone called in at short notice to cover for sickness. They don’t have to accept every offer of work you make. People who work for you casually are employees, and need an employment agreement just like any other staff member. If you’re employing someone on a casual basis, it’s recommended you include a clause outlining the details of their work hours. This should make clear: • there is no guarantee of work on a specific day • the amount of work they’ll get will fluctuate • how you’ll let them know when you would like them to work • they’re not obliged to make themselves available for work.

Employers often mistake part-timers for casual workers. If the work is in a regular pattern, they should be on a permanent part-time agreement.

LEAVE ENTITLEMENTS FOR CASUAL EMPLOYEES Casual employees, like all other employees, are entitled to holidays. Because they don’t have set hours, you can agree with them that instead of earning annual leave, you’ll pay them an extra 8% of their salary or wage each pay. They’re also entitled to sick leave and bereavement leave after six months of starting work with you if during that time they have worked: If you don’t meet these criteria, the fixed term may not be valid and you’ll be expected to treat them as a permanent employee. You also need to know that: • You can’t hire someone on a fixed-term contract to try them out before you hire them permanently.

To try someone out, you need to hire them as a permanent employee, and include a trial period in their employment agreement.

• If you decide to offer the fixed-term employee a permanent position after the fixed-term contract ends, eg the person they were covering for parental leave does not return to work, they can’t be subject to a trial period — those are for new employees only.

• If you want to dismiss a fixed-term employee, you’ll need to follow the same disciplinary and dismissal processes as for other employees.

• You should always finish the agreement at the agreed time. If you need to extend it, do so in writing — or create a new fixed-term agreement — before the original agreement expires.

• If you’re thinking about rolling over a fixed-term contract more than once, think carefully – you might actually need a permanent employee.

• If you’re hiring someone for a fixed term of less than a year, you can agree together that they’ll be paid 8% extra (before tax) instead of earning annual leave.

YOU RISK A $10,000 FINE IF YOU DO NOT HAVE A EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENT ON FILE FOR ALL EMPLOYEES...

Every employee must have a written employment agreement. This can be either an individual agreement or a collective agreement. Collective employment agreements are negotiated in good faith between an employer and a registered union on behalf of their members. Employers must not unduly influence employees to join or not join a union. Individual employment agreements are negotiated between employers and individual non union employees.

From 1 July 2011, employers are required to retain a signed copy of their employee agreement or current terms and conditions of employment. Where the employer has given an employee an intended agreement the employer must keep the agreement up to date and provide employees with a copy of the intended agreement even if the employee has not signed it.

There are some provisions that must be included in employment agreements by law, and there are also a number of minimum conditions that must be met regardless of whether they are included in agreements. Employment law also provides a framework for negotiating additional entitlements.

TYPES OF EMPLOYMENT AGREEMENTS The Employment Relations Act 2000 sets out most of the rules for forming an employment relationship, through an employment agreement. The rules differ depending on whether there is a relevant collective agreement or not. There will be a relevant collective agreement when: • an employer and a union have negotiated a collective agreement under the Employment Relations Act 2000, and • the agreement covers the work to be performed by that employer’s new employee Trial periods Employers can make an offer of employment to a prospective employee that includes a trial period of up to 90 days. Trial periods are voluntary, and must be agreed in writing and negotiated in good faith as part of the employment agreement. A trial period can’t be offered to a new employee who was previously employed in the same workplace. An employee who is dismissed before the end of a trial period can’t raise a personal grievance on the grounds of unjustified dismissal. They can raise a personal grievance on other grounds, such as discrimination or harassment or unjustified action by the employer.

If any employment relationship problem arises, access to mediation is available at any point. While an employer is not required to provide written reasons for an employee’s dismissal, there is an expectation that an employer, acting in good faith, would inform the employee as to why he or she has been dismissed.

Any provisions about giving notice in the employment agreement will need to be adhered to. Employees on trial periods are entitled to all other minimum employment rights, for example in relation to health and safety, employment agreements, minimum pay, annual holidays, public holidays, leave and equal pay.

PROBATION PERIODS An employer also has the option to an initial probationary period. If the first part of the employment relationship is a probation period this must be recorded in writing in the employment agreement including its duration. A probation period allows the new employee to demonstrate their skills.

Mere Pōhatu

Community Learning is everything Christmas and something is going to happen. I know all our mokopuna have had their little minds filled with myths and magic. Our mokopuna have raised expectations of a sea of gifts, some talk about the Jesus birthday, and come to the end of a whole mammoth school year of ups and downs.

One Christmas wish that I have for all our mokopuna is I hope you had an awesome year of learning and that in the New Year everyone in your house and your whānau is ready to make even better use of our local education people and facilities.

I meant to send in a view or two about the Education Act 1989. That’s the law of the land about our schools and things. We in Tairāwhiti have a priority matter to attend to. We need to be helping more kids to love learning more stuff at school. We know the more education we have, the more civil our society can be. The more we know means the more we can help others.

We need more flexibility and innovation with our schools. I think we have to make better use of the facilities. Try different hours. Get our people on to the Boards and focus on helping our Boards to take a stand. Stamp their feet. And make every day a winning day for every mokopuna who comes through the gate to learn.

Let’s move out the red tape and raise our whānau expectations for our mokopuna. All that learning is paid for by our taxes. We have to make sure then, that the learning doesn’t short change us in that respect.

Every mokopuna in Tairāwhiti has a right to be a winner in the learning stakes. At the minimum we want us all to be able to count, read and be sociable. Lots of that learning takes place in a school setting and together with the household and the whānau, each kid can be an atomic learner any day any time any place.

Some whānau need a hand up. Some kids need much more of our community support. We all must say a very big awesome MERRY HOLIDAY and THANKS to all our grunty little groups like Super Grans and the School Lunch folks for just getting on with stuff.

This Christmas let’s shop local, set up plans to be local, think local and be locally charitable.

Make 2016 all about our mokopuna. Yes Regional Responsibility for all our Mokopuna.

Such arrangements may be permissible where the duration and tasks are limited and designed to give the employer a fair opportunity to assess the skills.

Employers may not use such an arrangement to get work done without having to pay for it. A probation period does not limit the legal rights and obligations of the employer or the employee, and both parties must deal with each other in good faith.

Poihipi Ngamoko Mihaka (Rangiaho) Better known as Bluey Mihaka

This month I was asked to interview a person who I have never met before. I felt I would be intruding because he didn’t know me either. He had just celebrated his eighty ninth birthday and, so I was told, would have some really interesting stories to share. So away I went to Manutuke. With him being close to ninety I didn’t know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised to find this most beautiful looking man I have ever seen of his age. He was warm, welcoming and a joy to interview, walking upright with no added fixtures and the sharpest mind.

So he begins his story …

“I was born in 1926 at Ōtūwhare Ōmāio to Tamure (Snapper) Rangiaho of Whakatohea and Ngāi Tuhoe Iwi and Tangi, nee Butler of Te Whānau ā Apanui. I am the only child of my parents’ union and the eldest of my mother’s children. My parents separated when I was very young and my mother remarried, a Pākeha by the name of Dick Paget. They had five children and I remember my mother having my brother Dickie who was the eldest of her second family.

Through the Ringatū Church my father moved around the region and eventually arrived in Gisborne.

Because of his nomadic lifestyle he carried on to Waituhi with the woman who had been the bridesmaid when he married my mother. I was just on five when my father brought me to Waituhi for a holiday and I have a strong recollection of my parents having a tug of war over me because my mother didn’t want me to go with my father. Maybe she knew my father’s true intentions. She was so right, once I came to Waituhi I never went back, nor would the family in Waituhi let me return to Ōmāio.

I was fortunate to have at least two aunties and an uncle, my father’s siblings take joint responsibility to bring me up. To these three, especially my Aunty Lil Tupara, I am eternally grateful as my father took minimal responsibility for my upbringing.

Coming from Ōmāio, Reo Māori was my first and only language. Soon after my arrival in Waituhi I was enrolled at Patutahi School. Because I had no understanding of English, I was laughed at by some children and the others just stood and stared at me when I spoke. That was it, I absolutely refused to go back to school until I turned seven. By then I had developed a better understanding of English and had grasped little phrases here and there from living with some of the Pākeha families. However, like a lot of other Māori of my generation, Te Reo was my dominant language and I would always fall back to using it and strapped for doing so. Despite that I have nothing but fond memories of Patutahi School, mischief making, swapping lunches and the start of many lifelong friendships.

School was never really for me, I went as far as standard six (Form Two) which is now known as Year 8 and that was it, no going on to high school for me. Like my father I, too, was nomadic and lived with many different families in Waituhi and even spent some time staying on Rongopai Marae. When I left school I first worked in the fields and milked cows for the Plunket family who lived across the road from where I was staying at the time. Later I found work with the Brodie and Kirkpatrick families.

I grew up Ringatū and still am.

I also traded cigarettes and anything else I could get my hands on. Although I did a lot of trading, I often felt sorry for the locals on the streets and gave them cigarettes, food and money. One night we went to a party that lasted four days. Four of us ended up in jail, two were released early, me and my mate were left in their much longer, not sure why. Australia. This is something that I would like to do so that I can acknowledge that part of my life.

I was 23 when I came home. I met my first wife Hine Waipara at a hockey tournament in Whakaki. One of the boys told me that she wanted to meet me so Bella Harrison introduced us, Bella was Hine’s first cousin, the rest is history. We married and settled and built our home in Manutuke. Together we had six children and lost one. Sadly Hine passed away at a young age and I then married her younger sister Rii. Rii and I had four children to add to our large family.

She too has now passed away.

I didn’t socialise much when I had my children, I did what was necessary for all of those family and community occasions but my focus was always on working to provide for my family.

Bluey’s daughter Michelle was present at the interview. She added that as children they never went without because of Pop’s drive to provide for them and because of the closeness of their families and community. She told of how her father worked hard, never berated any of them, always saw the positive side of everyone and was always there for them. They never ever experienced anger from him or the sting of his hand.

I started working with the Waikohu County Council as a roadman on the Whakarau Road where old Jack Terepu Ruru taught me to use dynamite, drill holes and set them off. We used dynamite to cut out corners and other obstacles in the way of a straighter road.

One day we were told to clear a slip on the road and keep it open because the local policeman, Tom Walker was heading up to a station at the end of it to investigate a death, it so happened that a man had swallowed his teeth and died. Being up and around Matawai was often lonely but it did help meeting up with families from Manutuke on the back roads going up to the shearing sheds with all the news and happenings from home.

I remember Wes Davoren well, he had a huge family and reckoned he made more money catching possums than his real job so I started trapping possums as well. They were everywhere especially when the willow trees were budding. I had a little dog called Rusty, she was a great hunter and the best friend I ever had out in the back blocks. Because we were not allowed to hunt possums while working for the Waikohu Council a friend of mine collected the tokens on my behalf. Tokens were paid out according to specified measurements of each possum. The majority of the Waikohu Council workers at the time trapped possums to make extra money, most have now passed on.

I worked for some time with the Ministry Of Works including the building of the Te Arai Bridge where the swing bridge is now. Nan Whaitiri would come over and start cussing and rambling on about how the bridge shouldn’t be built there. “No, no Pākeha,” she would say. ‘No good there, the taniwha will get

your bridge.” She sat there for hours watching the progress continuing to protest. Just as she said, the bridge collapsed so they tried putting in a Bailey Bridge and something that defies explanation happened. A grader collapsed on it, its four wheels just flattened out leaving it sitting prone on its sump. A crane had to be brought in to remove it, meanwhile Nan Whaitiri could be heard cackling away. While working on the existing Te Arai Bridge we did a lot of excavating on the banks and one of our operators came across some perfectly round hangi stones shaped like basketballs with human bones on them. He quickly jumped off the machine and high tailed it out of there so I got in and removed and reburied the stones and bones further down the river. Yes, we came across lot of bones around the river yet our children swam there with no fear.

I was a member of the first Manutuke Fire Brigade.

After the horrific fire that killed my wife’s Cousin Bella’s first husband Tom Kouka and their little children the community got together and asked for a volunteer fire brigade to be set up here. Local well known resident, the late John Clark was very involved.

He pointed out that that none of the local Māori, even those who lived right across the road from the first temporary station which was a half round shed on his Opou property, were in the first group of twelve volunteers so Paddy Hokianga and I were invited to join. When the existing fire station building at the end of Whakato Road arrived to be erected there weren’t any nuts and bolts so John rang the Ferguson tractor dealer of the time to see where they were. He was told that they were not included as part of the package and would have to be purchased. John reminded the dealer of his large fleet of Ferguson tractors and if the nuts and bolts were not sent out there would be no more Ferguson tractors coming through his gate, the nuts and bolts duly arrived free of charge.

My last job was at the Kaiti Freezing works. Up until then I’d never had a sick day in my life but suddenly I started to experience chest pains. It was a bit worrying as I’d never felt like that before and it was a whole week before I could get a doctor’s appointment. When he finally saw me at his surgery he immediately sent for an ambulance to take me to the hospital. From there I was airlifted to Waikato Hospital where they inserted a pacemaker because my heart rate was too low. As my family keep reminding me, I had the heart rate of a finely tuned athlete but not the body. That was some years ago and everything still works perfectly.

The only thing I was really passionate about was motorbikes. I loved watching them race but never had the nerve to race them myself.

I also had a reputation for collecting treasures. We’d often take a trailer load of

junk to the dump and return home with a trailer load of treasures, or more junk as my kids would say. But I had the last laugh as frequently people came over seeking that ‘hard to find’ part for a car, bike or the like. Most Sundays there would be power cuts in Manutuke so I’d take the kids out picking blackberries, collecting kaimoana at the beach or just roam around the cemeteries.

I joined the Tūranga Health kaumātua programme about four years ago. Initially I didn’t think I was old enough but now absolutely love going and look forward to our Tuesday ‘get togethers.’ Now my children complain that holidays have to be organised around the programme. Not long ago I went on the Motuhora road trip with the group which was exciting for me as we went through a lot of areas where I’d worked in and around.

More recently we went on a train ride to Muriwai. Both trips were full of great memories for me and of real significance to the memories of my working life.

As an only child to my parents, I have been blessed with two wives, ten children, 15 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren and 2 great, great grandchildren. There is also sadness as I have lost those two wives, two children and four of my siblings.

Manutuke is my home and where my family home is. My legacy, as an only child, is rich with memories of who I am and my family.

RUGBY FEVER – RWC 2015 Nā Lewis Whaitiri

Stadiums empty, crowds dispersed, banners taken down, chants no longer heard. London, although home to eight million people, is now quiet. The Rugby World Cup has concluded for another four years. Some teams, players and coaches return to their respective home soils and ponder what went wrong? While our boys created history, becoming the first team to win back-to-back world cups and the first to hold the title three times. Thanks to Ngāti Rānana Māori Club, I was fortunate enough to be right in the mix of it.

The boys arrived in London early September and it was our job to ensure they received a pōhiri fit for world champions. Māori, Pākehā, Kiwis and All Black fans filled the walkways of Southbank, Oxo Towers to get a glimpse of the current titleholders of the Web Ellis Trophy. The sound of the pūtātara signalled that the boys had arrived and the pōhiri was about to commence. On behalf of AIG and Ngāti Rānana we will be welcoming some of the players to London with the hope that on their return home, they would create rugby history.

Our kapa made up of members from various iwi throughout Aotearoa were fortunate enough to welcome and meet All Black stars Kieran Reed, Luke Romano, Liam Messam, Aaron Smith, Sam Cane, TJ Perenara, Codie Taylor and also former All Black captain Sean Fitzpatrick. It was truly a day appreciated by all that were present. This would the first of many encounters that I would have with the All Blacks over the next six weeks.

In late March of this year, I was invited by Mowden Park RFC in Darlington to teach and help over 4000 school kids attempt to break the Guiness World Record for the most people doing haka at one time.

Unfortunately they were unsuccessful, however Mowden Park RFC were lucky enough to host the All Blacks during one of their training sessions. While the children did not get their Guiness World Record, they did get the chance to perform a haka as a welcome ceremony for the All Blacks. I had the pleasure of leading the children in a haka I composed specifically for them. Fifteen of the All Blacks team attended the event including two of our own, Nehe MilnerSkudder and Dane Coles, as well as superstars like Sonny Bill Williams and Jerome Kaino. The children left the event happy that they had met some of the rugby heroes, and I left overwhelmed by the love and passion the children put into performing their own haka.

Two of the final events I was fortunate enough to attend were the All Blacks Tour supporters’ evenings with Dave Dobbyn and Herbs. A night where all the All Black Tour groups, former All Black legends such as Eric Rush, Stephen Donald, Frank Bunce, Sir Graham Henry and NZ media personalities like Leigh Hart, Newsboy (Jeremy Wells) and Matt Heath celebrated being a part of the Rugby World Cup. Ngāti Rānana opened one of the evenings with a haka pōhiri and performing the All Blacks favourite haka, composed

by Uncle Derek Lardelli, Kapa ō Pango. The evening included Q & A with former All Blacks, great Kiwi music and tasty Kiwi food and beverage. The events organised by All Black Tours were exclusive events and yet again we were right in the thick of it.

To round off my Rugby World Cup 2015 experience a few friends and myself in Rānana took an opportunity that enabled us to socialise with the All Black team on their final night in London. It was good to see the boys relax after a four-year campaign and feeling on top of the world. And now to prepare for Japan 2019!

Aside from all the haka boogieing throughout the Rugby World Cup I also attended five games – All Blacks v Argentina at Wembley Stadium, All Blacks v Georgia at Millennium Stadium, the quarter-final All Blacks v France again at Millennium Stadium, the bronze final South Africa v Argentina at Olympic Stadium and, the biggest of them all, the Rugby World Cup 2015 Final All Blacks v Australia at Twickenham Stadium.

The next event we were involved in was the MasterCard Priceless Moment Haka with All Black legend Jonah Lomu at Covent Garden. A 7.20am start meant an early rise for all involved. News crews such as BBC, ITV and SKY all gathered to capture this moment. It was Lewis welcoming the All Blacks indeed a priceless moment for all, especially for our kapa who were able to meet and perform with the former All Black No 11. Not many The highlight at every game was that I was people can say they’ve done a haka with Jonah able to watch alongside whānau, Uncle Willie Lomu. Following this performance we were then Te Aho, Uncle Wi and Aunty Bubbles, my first invited, on two occasions, to attend and showcase cousin Wade Eagar, cuzzies Whenua Te Kurapa kapa haka at the Jonah Lomu Unstoppable UK Tour. and his lovely wife Rose Ramsay, Karina Blyth Jonah travelled throughout the UK sharing his story and her partner Humi Jasim, but most of all my to fundraise money for a charity that he holds dear nephew Paora Patuwai. Sharing these moments with whānau are priceless and memories that to his heart, Kidney Kids NZ. we can hold on to forever.

My Rugby World Cup 2015 experience has been amazing and one that I will never forget. I am truly blessed for the opportunities I have been given over the past six weeks, representing my whānau, hapu, iwi and Aotearoa whānui on an international stage and fulfilling the words of Ngoi Pewhairangi, kia whiua ki te ao, whiua ki te rangi, whiua ki ngā iwi katoa. Māori in the First World War Pt 2

Tēnā koutou, I have received a number of diaries and letters relating to Māori soldiers who served in the Māori Contingent or the New Zealand Pioneer Battalion.

100 years ago today, while the remnant of the First Māori Contingent clung to the small gains made on the Gallipoli Peninsula, their reinforcements, the Second Māori Contingent had arrived at Zeitoun Camp in Egypt. One of the latter was Sgt Tawhai Tamepo of Waipiro Bay. As a 17 year-old he had tried to enlist with his schoolmates in the First Māori Contingent but was unsuccessful. He left this account in his memoirs which his son, Ereatara (Eric), loaned me. The first part of the account was published in last month’s issue of Pīpīwharauroa.

We take up Sgt Tamepo’s story again when he is at Whangarā in 1914.

JANUARY

Individuals and groups can get help to quit smoking at TĹŤranga Health after a new year resolution and all year round! The quit rate for individuals on a smokefree programme is around 30-40 percent. Around 50 percent are smokefree after three months if they have worked with a group.

FEBRUARY

TĹŤ Kaha kicks off 2015 with more classes in more places including marae and halls in Manutuke, Patutahi, Te Karaka, Muriwai and Matawai. It’s a fun way to get fit with friends and whÄ nau without the need to travel.

MARCH APRIL

Over 330 secondary school sportsmen and women were in Gisborne in April for the 2015 New Zealand Secondary Schools Ki o Rahi Championship run

by TĹŤranga Health. Sport Gisborne TairÄ whiti Community Events Advisor Debbie Hutchings described the event as “absolutely amazingâ€?. Ki o Rahi coaching forms a strong part of TĹŤranga Health’s school sport and traditional physical recreation programme.

The first in a series of Nutritional Workshops held onsite at primary industry locations around the district is a hit with Gisborne Fisheries and Leaderbrand staff. The workshops are part of the TĹŤ Mahi Workplace Wellness programme. Primary industry staff get information about healthy food options and quick and easy nutritional meal ideas.

The Tōranga Health Trish Hina Primary Schools Rugby League Tournament was held at Te Wharau School and Ilminster Intermediate School on Tuesday 30 June after bitterly cold conditions postponed the tournament the week before. Thirteen teams of year 5 and 6 tamariki took part. The league tournament is named in honour of Trish Hina, a Gisborne social worker and one of New Zealand’s greatest sportswomen.

AUGUST

Inch by inch, day by day, the TĹŤranga Health Hauora TÄ ne programme is making a difference for MÄ ori men, who as a population group have on average the poorest health status of any ethnic group in New Zealand. Each intake has 10-12 participants who commit to a 10-week programme of fitness and education. The appeal of group exercise is whakawhanaungatanga.

Workplaces are wonderful settings for activity and weight-loss programmes. As well as helping local primary industry workplace staff with health and fitness, TĹŤranga Health staff also take part in their own programme. The TĹŤranga Health Positive Change 12-Week Staff Challenge started in May.

JULY

TĹŤranga Health plays a crucial role in the campaign to address TairÄ whiti’s high rates of rheumatic fever, and the cold months of the year served to remind whÄ nau about the need to take children with sore throats to any of the rapid response sore throat clinics in the region.

Rheumatic fever starts with a sore throat that is known as strep throat. Children with throat swabs that test positive for Strep A are referred to TĹŤranga Health for antibiotics and follow up.

SEPTEMBER

OCTOBER

Turanga Health begins offering more help in homes for rural patients from its base in Te Karaka. Previously known as Waikohu Health Centre, on Station Road, the centre is now known as Turanga Health and is no different to TĹŤranga Health in town except it is closed on Wednesdays. Dr Mark Devcich and the regular practice nurses continue to see patients on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays.

TĹŤranga Health reorganisers itself into rural health teams offering greater continuity of service and staff for whÄ nau in each area.

WhÄ nau will see the same staff over and over ensuring better care and relationships built on trust. There is a regular group of staff servicing Muriwai and Manutuke, other staff working in the wider Te Karaka, Matawai, Motu area, and another team looking after town-based whÄ nau.

NOVEMBER DECEMBER

For many people, putting on shoes and getting out the door can be the biggest hurdle to taking regular exercise! It’s no different for the men and women who attend the Vanessa Lowndes Centre at Tōranga Health as they manage their own mental, physical or intellectual disabilities as well as the need to keep fit. Walking during the summer months is always a huge hit!

Every second Tuesday around 150 kaumÄ tua converge on a local marae as part of Turanga Health’s KaumÄ tua Programme. They arrive on buses and in cars driven by Turanga Health staff having been picked up from their own homes earlier that morning. The fortnightly gatherings are an opportunity for kaumÄ tua to stay engaged with each other and their own health.

Te Urikore went on to complete a BA Hons at Waikato University, a MA at Victoria University and is a current PhD candidate with the New Zealand School of Music and the Acting Dean, Teaching and Learning Mātauranga Māori at Unitec.

Special Awards went to Winiata Blane who was awarded the Jackson Peneha award for the most outstanding forestry student in 2015 with special mention made of Edward Pirini and Jonathan Wright for their contribution to the forest industry. Muru Kirikiri was awarded the Barry Brown Te Purapura award for excellence in the pirmary industries.

Ngawai Tai was awarded the Emma Koia E Tipu E Rea award for Growth Achievement and Leadership Potential. Wiremu Riki was awarded the Tere Fitzgerald Te Matau A Maui Award for their overall contribution to Tūranga Ararau.

Tūranga Ararau sincerely thanks all those who helped during the year and at the graduation and wishes all students and their whānau well for the New Year whereever their pathway takes them.
