o a new edition of Shout. This edition is truly special for it realizes the vision of a truly student-driven magazine at the International School of Stuttgart e.V.

Trust me when I say that it has been an interesting and joyful journey thus far for me on a personal level and I am pretty sure that the rest of the editorial team shares the sentiment.

I am really proud of what we have achieved as a team so far, because amidst their busy schedules ranging from personal projects to various other school assignements and commitments the editorial team consisting of Anne-Sophie Hricik, Koray Karaman, Mateus Silva, Guilherme Barreiro and Cafer Uras created something really special.

Last but not least, I would like to stress that there's still a lot of room left to expand our team in both number of participants as well as topics to cover. Therefore, if you are a student who's curious, creativite and has passion for writing, don't hesitate to contact us!

WELCOMING WORD FROM STUDENT COUNCIL

W

e are already over half-way through the school year 2019/2020 and time has just been flying. In case you missed it, Student Council is run this school year by Lana Raiger (G10) and Julian Vogel (G11). For this year, Ms. Martin has taken over part of Student Council to allow more direct communication and effective actions. However, the Student Council cannot run without the other 19 members that are there to represent your ideas and bring up discussions that need to occur. In order to allow your ideas to be represented, Student Council will place “idea boxes” around the school, which will allow you to give us suggestions. Meanwhile please talk to your grade representatives or feel free to talk to Lana or Julian directly. We are excited to hear what ideas/ suggestions you have for us.

However, this is not all that we will be doing. The Student Council requested door signs, an honor council, new fundraising activities and we are in close work with members of the Spirit Team, Erasmus Project, Eco-School project and are involved with the new buildings for the school that will be built from July 2021 until 2023. Furthermore, Student Council already has had the fundraising activity of the Winter Market, which we are currently in the process of analyzing the extent of our success and brainstorming improvements. The money that we raised here will go to seating opportunities (75%) and the “African School” project (25%). We are excited to support more projects such as the “African School” project in the future.

This year is the year where the Student Council will be made big again and we cannot do this without all of you. The entire Student Council team hopes that we can resolve any concerns or areas of concerns. We wish all of you an exciting remaining school year and remember, we are there to represent you!

MUNDAY: AN INSIDE LOOK MUNDay Chairwoman, Izabela Rahaman gives us behind the scenes details

So why did you guys decide on the topic of child labour for MUNDay?

What do you think you could improve for the upcoming MUNISS?

Izabela: Well the reason we decided on this topic was that we were inspired from some of the Human Rights debates that would come up in MUNISS (2020) which will be talking about sustainability and production so we thought it would be a good connection, something that's relevant today and would help people get on the right train of thought for the real conference.

Izabela: I think we can improve some of the logistical things, for example, deciding the main submitter of the resolution generally and different aspects that would make others feel more comfortable with giving speeches and sharing their opinions in a larger setting. Personally I think I need to learn the phrases that I need to say as a chair.

And do you know why they chose sustainability and production for MUNISS?

Why do you think MUNISS is important for people to join?

Izabela: We thought that this was something that a lot of the team was really passionate about and thought was something relevant to this period of time. It's also something that would allow people to think of innovative solutions for global problems.

Izabela: I think it is really important because as young people, we are the most important influencers in future politics and the way that the global economy looks in terms of sustainability or economic success. Having the ability to not just think our own opinions while discrediting others are some things that we develop through being participants in MUN to have fruitful and conscious debates and getting a more wellrounded opinion.

What were your expectations from MUNDay both as a team and personally?

Izabela: Well as a team we were hoping that a lot of the students in high school and most of the middle school, especially the older middle school would become familiar with the general processes of MUN and that would allow for more fruitful debates without getting caught up in all the formalities of what they should actually say. In general, we wanted people to come out of their comfort zone and especially in the mock debates get more comfortable giving speeches and thinking about things from a different perspective than their own. For me personally, it was the first time I was chairing so I didn't really know what to expect but it was a good experience!

Is there anything you want to tell the readers about MUN that they might like?

Izabela: MUN really helps with argumentative speeches which are important in the essays you write in school as well as debates in classes.

But in general, it's a good life skill to have to be able to interact with others who have different backgrounds and opinions and draw useful information about any issue when talking with someone.

DISTANCE LEARNING ISS Director, Tim Kelley talks about the challenges and opportunities that come with distance learning and social distancing during the current corona virus crisis.

T

he ISS learning statement, “Learning at the core of all we do”, is at the heart of any move to Distance Learning.

This program is more than just moving online.

Our teachers are committed to remaining connected to our students both personally and academically although the environment is different from a traditional school setting.

We must collectively realize that our entire community will be going through a period of experimentation and understanding.

We will all need to think differently about how to support our learners and how we can create structures and routines that allow them to be successful during this specific time of closure.

“We inspire, challenge and actively support our students and each other to become positive participants in a changing world”.

Well, we’re indeed in a changing world. Some people fear change and some embrace it as an opportunity. I would argue that any school accepts the notion that this is an opportunity to learn. For most of the world learning is beginning with the sciences as we look to virus-control, cleanliness and of course finding vaccinations, a process that takes a considerable amount of time and careful scientific measure to make sure that we protect lives all over the world. Math is more relevant than ever, especially as we calculate the statistics and probability of where the disease we’re facing is growing and going and as we calculate the mortality rate make sure that we calculate the 8

APRIL 2020

cure factors and the rate of recovery.

We’re discovering that learning is more than classrooms and whiteboards. Let’s not forget books. Reading is something we now have more time to do and is now more important than ever because more than ever before we have to face real facts and inform ourselves about what’s going on not only with our neighbours but with the world itself.

Back at home, our 5th graders are working on their final exhibition; kindergarteners are missing their classroom, arts students continue to make their art, Sindelfingen gardeners are ready to plant the seeds for next year’s harvest, musicians are practicing and the early years can’t wait to get back to the playground.

It’s true that at literal school we have less screen time, that’s all the more reason to build outdoor learning opportunities at home. We need to build new ways to have fun, discover new places to read, build sustainable solutions or plan for the future with the things we learn today.

One thing we always have to remember is that we learn together and we also have to care together.

Some people will tell you that the future of the world hangs in the balance. I am not one of them. I think what hangs in the balance is fear and understanding and education is going to help us conquer that understanding.

Remember this is an adventure where we are all learning together. We have no intention to close the school, we’re going to innovate instead.

Our mantra to the challenges of today is simple:

“No matter what, we will keep learning.”

No matter what, we will keep learning. For over eight years students and parents worked with student info system Veracross.

When students log in there’s a huge variety of options they can select from attendance, newsletters, clubs and of course access to all their classes and most importantly their assignments.

The tools we use to communicate are email and the Veracross community portal and our distance learning portal, where you can easily access student expectations and guidelines, parental expectations and guidelines. As we start, the tools that we will use will primarily be Veracross, Microsoft Teams, Google Suite, Office 365 Apps, Google Classroom, the ISS Learning Commons Site.

Nowadays it’s more important than ever for students to be able to see and plan for each and every day. Simply clicking on a list allows them to do their math exercises or get a sense of what they have to do in English like learning to write essays with examples.

Putting together the distance learning at ISS program has taken a lot of time and effort and has been based on years of experience. We have begun by creating a platform for everyone to understand our policies and guidelines and to celebrate the fact that we keep learning through this.

LEARNING FROM HOME

W

hen we travel to other countries, one of the best ways to get to know a culture is to experience their cuisine. This is something we all try to do with our language classes during the year, and now is no different. Grade 11 students had to complete a Paper 1 which was to write a recipe in Spanish. In order to make it really hands-on, whilst sharing this at the same time, they had to make the recipe and ask their family to try it, rate it and take a picture of themselves cooking.

Everything looked delicious and we're looking forward to trying the dishes when we're all back together.

“Today’s virtual classes went very well. If it wasn’t for my small laptop screen, I would have felt like I was there, right in front of my teacher. At first, the idea of virtual learning sounds really complicated. But it isn’t. Writing you have a question in the comments section of the video call actually works better than raising your hand in the “real” class. Speaking with the teacher online works really well. It can sometimes be really very fun. For example, one of my teachers had her dog in the background. It was really cute. In English class when we were learning to write poetry and had to write similes. One of them said toilet paper is as rare as diamonds (which is currently true). Online learning is a really special experience.”

n true IB spirit, Grade 6, 7 and 8 have shown they are knowledgeable, with the confidence to adapt quickly to our new form of communication during lessons with their Science Fair home experiments. Despite many students not being able to collect basic lab equipment from ISS, our MYP students have solved problems by adapting their equipment and thinking about how they can still carry out lab-based inquiry at home, or indeed a hotel room. We have enjoyed observing the experimentation taking place in your kitchens at home!

GRADE 10 PERSONAL PROJECTS

T

he MYP Personal Project in Grade 10 is a chance for students to decide what they would like to learn, to set their own goals and to choose the pace they work.

It is a chance for them to learn who they are as independent learners. Each student has a teacher as a mentor, but mentors are only there to answer questions and to provide advice; the students make their own decisions and drive their own goals. This 8-month project is the culmination of the MYP Program and is an opportunity for insight into who each of these students are – their interests and who they are as learners.

Students delivered presentations and exhibited their work throughout the day and welcomed visitors from Grades 5-9, faculty, staff and parents. The students have worked extremely hard throughout this process and all showed a lot of personal growth. We are proud of their achievements and look forward to kicking off the process with our Grade 9 students, soon!

HOMELESSNESS Koray Karaman from the 10th Grade, shares his experience while working on his personal project with the goal being to raise awareness on the subject of homelessness.

A

very common picture when someone visits their local city center, is most of the time, people walking in a fast pace up and down the streets, looking at the shop windows, scouting for the most recent discount and going into a mall or a boutique and getting out with lots of bags filled with whatever their shopping-frenzy compelled them to buy.

As common as this picture might be, it is as just as common to witness those very people to either try to avoid or plainly ignore the dozens of homeless people asking for any kind of help from those with the intention to spend hundreds of Euros in a matter of minutes. This realization had a very upsetting effect on me. I wanted to create something that is easily accessible both now and in the future and that raises awareness about an important issue such as homelessness. The idea that came to my mind was to create a website as part of my personal project for school.

Apart from the desire to raise awareness, the decision to create a website would also serve as an opportunity and personal challenge to develop my skills and personal abilities. Furthermore, creating a website myself would allow me to express my personal feelings about this important issue. As the actual designer I had full control over the looks and utility of the website, allowing me thus to create something I totally identify with. When I first decided on going ahead with this project, I had almost no previous experience with the subject. Homelessness was something that I thought about, mainly when I would see something about it. We never truly studied homelessness and poverty in our school curriculum so the knowledge I had about homelessness was limited to my personal experiences.

This meant that I needed to do research and find out more. I had very little experience with HTML coding before this project as I rarely got to use code effectively both in school and my everyday life.

We did have some minor topics in design classes about making websites such as in 8th grade where we had begun learning the basics but never finished. I only understood enough to be able to put some writing on a website with images but without any navigation or aesthetics. The only other experience I had with making websites was from design in 9th grade which was about creating a website BUT without coding.

This helped me learn about the requirements of a website. The website was coded entirely in HTML and CSS, all from what I learned in the process of creating the product. I used communication skills to convince the audience that it is easier to help than they think by adding phrases such as “There are infinite ways to help a man who was nothing.” The pictures in the background should also provoke thoughts about ethics and empathy as they see people suffering and negativity when required (such as in the picture of the man that’s leaning against a pillar alone) or more uplifting pictures to motivate them to help like the picture on the shelter page where there are volunteers feeding the poor and the homeless.

SV-ISS A few words on the schools’ sportsclub by the new Sportvereinmanager, Mr. Stoimir Ivandic

After graduating from the sports gymnasium in Belgrade he came to Germany in 2007 and spent almost 8 years playing Basketball in different cities in Germany. After he finished his basketball career, he studied Sport at the University of TĂźbingen.

THE ISS & GISST

Radiša Zdravković, Athletics Director at the ISS shares his thoughts on the GISST Program and our school’s performance

O

ur school is extremely privileged to be a part of the GISST Program which is constituted of 11 International Schools.

GISST offers our students a great opportunity to measure themselves against students from other school as well as represent the school on a national level.

I believe it is very important experience for the students and frankly the students themselves recognize this importance; starting from going through the try-out process to the selection and especially when returning from a tournament victorious and holding a trophy or in general achieving great personal success.

Furthermore, we are really happy that we can organize on a regular basis tournaments locally and thus show the whole ISS community what a GISST tournament is and how it works.

We often host guests from the other 10 International Schools here in Stuttgart and as far as housing is being concerned, that we do plan and organize ourselves. More to the point, students from other International Schools stay at a family from our school.

So GISST isn’t just about Sport but also about forming friendships and promoting intercultural exchange. In essence we have students of more

than 40 nationalities coming together in a single location to compete and socialize with each other.

Another point I want to stress in that regard is that many of our students, which have participated in GISST Tournaments over the years, have formed friendships with students from other schools that continue to exist outside the world of sports, exactly because of this socializing aspect of GISST and housing program.

In regard to our performance while participating in last year’s tournament I can happily tell you

that we performed extremely well! Our results reflect this pretty accurately. This season as well has started rather strong; among others we have again formed full a cross-country team after a six year absence and all other teams are more or less full as well. I hope that this year we will perform similar to last year but with less pressure. The GISST season comes to an end with the biggest tournament of the year, which is Track & Field and it will take place at the end of May. Additionally, I would like to clarify a few things for those who aren’t that familiar with GISST and thus might be wondering what its difference I N S P I RE. C H AL L EN G E. S U P P OR T

to our Sportverein might be. Basically it tends to be more competitive. While participating in the Sportverein, like in any sport, also can be competitive the underlying difference to GISST tends to be in the broader process. Students who are interested in participating in a GISST team have to undergo try-out periods and compete for a spot in the respective team and then go ahead and represent the school in a tournament.

The ISS is one of a handful of International Schools that offer the rare opportunity of participating in both the GISST program as well as train and play at the own Sportverein and therefore compete concurrently on a local and national level. Also we have many students who thanks in part to their participation in GISST rose to great success in their local clubs.

As the Athletics Department this is one of our intentions! We want our students to continue to be involved in sports, especially on a competitive level, even after they graduate from here. In this regard GISST serves us well to discover talented players and support them in their ambitions and endeavors until they graduate, but we don’t only focus up until the 12th grade, rather we try to motivate them and help them retain their passion as to continue when they go to college.

But apart from the expected focus on sports and performance in GISST, we also concentrate on the pedagogical aspect of it. We don’t have to forget that we’re a school and the tournaments takes place within an educational framework. Therefore, one of our goals, especially in team-sports, we promote virtues of camaraderie and team spirit. It is an integral part of Sports to contribute in building ones character and our students learn to function as a team, adapt to various situations and their respective dynamics and last but not least understand that sometimes ones ego has to be put in the background in order for the team to succeed.

Moreover, being involved in a competitive environment can have a positive effect and also teach a lot. Many students realize that in order to achieve true success it requires a lot of investment on their part. This investment isn’t only in the form of time but also lots of sweat and energy and they learn that they have to commit themselves to a cause in order to get the best possible result. Of course, this doesn’t only count for sports but it’s an important lesson they learn for the later part of their life.

ONE PLAN ONE MISSION The 100 meters sprint is an exciting discipline.

Throughout history, the world has seen many incredible athletes try and break world records.

The names of athletes who manage to break the record are famously acknowledged and the athletes themselves are idolized and are remembered for their excellence. The desire amongst sprinters to achieve this success and establish a new record is still alive nowadays. On 6th July 1912 in Stockholm Sweden, the first ever official 100 meters sprint world record was set by the American Donald Lippencott with a time of 10.6 seconds ("Men's 100 metres"). This outstanding result was an inspiration for many sprinters following in his steps.

Personally, I have always been passionate about the 100 meters sprint for a long time and always wanted to learn how to run faster.

I admired the dedication of all athletes who attempted to break the world record and their accomplishments in improving their results.

That is why, I decided to try to achieve my best possible time running the 100 meters sprint.

Therefore, on the 1st of August 2019 I ran the 100 meters sprint to establish my initial time.

The time I achieved was 12.7 seconds. Indeed, I am aware of the gap, between my initial result, being 3.12 seconds behind the current world record held by the Jamaican Usain Bolt of 9.58 seconds on 16th of August 2009 in Berlin, Germany ("Men's 100 metres").

This boosted my passion to exercise in order to achieve an even better result by running faster.

Based on the detailed trainings plan provided by my coach Nico MĂśller and the advice of my second coach Maximilian Baranski, I trained 5 times a week for a duration of 3 months.

Each session was about 1h 45mn. When, I first looked at the training plan in July 2019, I was rather optimistic thinking that it wouldn’t be a real challenge. Boy was I wrong!

During my first month of training in August 2019, I was physically exhausted but nevertheless I continued thanks to my determination. It was indeed very challenging and required a lot of energy and motivation.

By the end of September 2019, my body had slightly adjusted to the hard conditions and high demands of the training. I noticed that my endurance and mindset had improved.

However, I had to coordinate my school’s duties and the trainings. With the support of my self-management skills, I successfully mastered this challenge while maintaining focus on my obligations.

Of course, I experienced moments in which I felt about giving up, such as when I had to train under extreme weather conditions, for instance in uncommonly high summer temperatures for Germany. However, I managed to stay motivated and focused throughout the entire project by pushing myself every time.

My hard work paid off. Yeah! I have done it!

I completed my three months of monstrous and efficient training. Indeed, my recorded 100 meters sprint on 31st October 2019 crystallised a significant improvement. I ran 12.0 seconds. This impressive result highlights an improvement of 0.7 of a second. I didn’t just increase my speed but thanks to this experience, I gained a better physical condition and witnessed a growth in mental strength.

I will continue to train for better results. Surely all the professional athletes aim for the same goal to run faster in the shortest amount of time. However, it is proven scientifically that it is impossible to run the 100 meters sprint in under 9 seconds. Biochemist Peter Weyand explains that in order to run a time under 9 seconds, a runner is required to produce a force greater than 5 times their own body weight(“Why It’s” [HH:MM:SS]).

Weyand’s arguments result from conducted experiments using specialised modern equipment like ultra-highspeed cameras which have motion detection capabilities and a specialised high-speed treadmill for athletes to run on.

Sport being a healthy activity and playing an important role in society as sport helps people to remain fit, to live healthy, to be balanced and to reduce and remove the daily stress. Furthermore, running is a worldwide accessible sport activity as we need just a pair of running shoes that can be practiced by everybody alone, in pairs or in groups. FORMULA 1 2019 RANKINGS How did the teams competing at the pinnacle of motorsport perform during the previous season? What lies ahead in 2020?

I

n the F1 2019 Season, we saw Lewis Hamilton become champion in the United States, after going second behind Bottas, securing Hamilton the win 2 races before the season was over. He finished 87 points ahead of his teammate Valtteri Bottas who was the only person that was left to be able to compete for the championship since the 18th race in Mexico because he was the only one that was still within a point range of Hamilton.

In third place was Max Verstappen, who was able to secure his position after Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc's team rivalry causing them to both not be able to finish in Brazil and Vettel’s suspension problem that forced him to not continue the race in the United States Grand Prix. In the last 3 races of the 2019 season, Ferrari had accumulated 38 points with both drivers (Leclerc 28; Vettel 10) while Max Verstappen alone had accumulated 58 points and had gone from being 5th to finishing third in the Driver’s Championship.

The rest of the drivers finished as follows: Carlos Sainz, Pierre Gasly, Alexander Albon, Daniel Ricciardo, Sergio Perez, Lando Norris, Kimi Räikkönen, Daniil Kvyat, Nico Hulkenberg, Lance Stroll, Kevin Magnussen, Antonio Giovinazzi, Romain Grosjean, Robert Kubica, and finally, George Russell.

The Constructors Championship didn’t represent the Drivers’ Championship as the Ferrari drivers had accumulated more points together than Verstappen and his two different teammates in one season. This gave Red Bull a huge disadvantage as it would be quite difficult for Research & Development (R&D) to have to adapt to Albons driving style when changing from Gasly in the second half of the Formula 1 2019 season. Mercedes was not even a point of discussion in this season as they were miles ahead of all the other teams with their strong understanding of the tyres, extremely efficient Mercedes V6 1.6L turbo engines and consistent drivers that outmatched all of their competitors throughout almost all races in the long run. This is very similar to the scores from 2018 where Mercedes won again with 655 points, Ferrari the runner-up with 571 and Red Bull coming 3rd with 419 points.

There have only been a few changes for the upcoming 2020 season, and they will most likely have very minimal impact.

he penalties for missing the weighbridge and jump-starts will be less severe. In the previous seasons, if a driver would not notice that they had been called to the weighbridge to check if the car was within the weight guidelines, they would be forced to start from the pit-lane at the beginning of that race. This year, the penalty for this will be less harsh but weren’t disclosed to the public. In a similar way, jump starts are now not a ten-second stop-go penalty. Instead it is replaced with a simple five or ten-second time penalty which can be added to a driver’s total time at the end of a race.

Shorter and less private testing. Before, teams would be allowed to put up screens or close the garage doors while testing new components or working on the car in general during the pre-season. This year, it will be banned to do so.Teams will also now have six days to test instead of eight, which means that the entire crew will have a tighter schedule. Chequered Flags return instead of lightboxes.

This season, the chequered flag was there only as a ceremony and did not show that the race was over. But because of some lightbox issues at the Japanese Grand Prix with the light turning on a lap too early and causing confusion, FIA has decided that it would be more sensible to bring back the traditional chequered flag.

An extra MGU-K for all drivers. After nine drivers exceeded their MGU-K allocation in 2019, an extra MGU-K has been allowed for 2020. Which means better racing due to less grid penalties being handed out.

Less fuel outside the tank. Down from two litres in 2019, only 250ml can be anywhere other than in the fuel safety cell at any time.

FANDOMS: THEY ARE EVERYWHERE! A brief description about fandoms and the history behind them Clues to uncover the origins of Fandoms Luffy-san

I

f one has been on the internet long enough there is a good chance you have heard about “fandoms”, many already know what it means, but if you do not and are curious to what they are, this is the article for you. Fandoms are subcultures of fans of certain media that are tied together by that interest.

Many feel camaraderie in their fandom, fans typically spend a big portion of their time invested in their interest. It can rise from any area of human interest or activity, not just books, shows or music. Fandoms can arise from ideas as well, one of the biggest fandoms based around a common idea that interest the fans is the furry fandom (which deserves a whole different article one its own). This means that the term “fandom” is applicable to many things, but in general it is a collection of people that are interested and invested with a common interest.

The term “fandom” can be traced back as far as 1903! This means that while fandoms are most commonly seen online on message boards, they have existed before that and really only propagated

through word of mouth, meaning they were relatively small, at least compared to today. The term originates from fan and the suffix -dom, meaning domain or collection or persons. Today though there are indeed still places outside of the online world that allow all sorts of fandoms to come together and geek out about their common interest.

Ever heard about Comicon? Probably if you look at some of the adverts that pop up around the summer times here in Stuttgart, being home to their very own Comicon. This is an example of an event that caters towards multiple different fandoms. There are conventions that are specific to one fandom, bringing it back to the furry fandom (being one of the biggest and most widely known) there are “cons” all over the world, the US has multiple that get thousands of attendees every year.

The first widely considered modern fandom is surprisingly the Sherlock fandom, it created some of the first original written works (commonly called fanfictions) around 1897 up to today. Many western

subcultures splintered off from the science fiction fandom that included any media that fell under the genre science fiction, which made the early fandom very diverse but incredibly chaotic and divided in opinions and ideals.

After it grew and people got tired of just how much was in the fandom, it started to become more distinct as time went on and when they started to grow at exponential rates when the internet came around. Fandoms are not just a western thing, in Japan the manga and anime fandoms started around the 1970s also branching out in the same way the science fiction fandom did.

But what are the activities that tie a fandom together? Well there are multiple different ways an individual ways a person can contribute, be it writing, art or costumes which are also known as cosplays. These are usually shared online on websites that cater to the fandom and allow a

wide reach to those inside it or shown off at conventions that are specific to the fandom or are like Comicon where there are a diverse set of people. Some even make most of their income through work in the larger fandoms, with people selling and making cosplays or taking commissions for artistic work.

To sum it up, fandoms are a huge factor in the online art and media circles that allow people to meet new friends and generally just be themselves. There are an incredible array of subcultures that exist these days and they will only grow with the development of easy ways to create spaces online for these fandoms. I would highly recommend looking up more about this topic as it is far too extensive to describe in just one article, perhaps you may even find a fandom you are interested in.

THE DEC ADE OF HIP HOP Here are my 3 most innovative rappers and albums of the 2010s.

The 2010s was by far the best decade for the Hip Hop industry. The genre grew in such a large scale that for the first time in history, it outsold the sales of rock music. The 10s was a decade of revolution for Hip Hop, in which new talented rappers surged from the bottom to create sounds unlike anything we have ever heard before. Drake, J. Cole, Kendrik Lamar, Travis Scott, Migos, XXXTentation, Juice WRLD, and several other artists, all came out with their first Platinum Album, which transformed Hip Hop into what we currently call: “Modern Hip Hop”. A genre full of variety and flexibility, which always seems to be reinventing itself. Mumble Rap, Trap, Lo-Fi call it whatever you want, as the 2010s introduced us to a diversity of Hip-Hop genres.

DRAKE A

ubrey Drake Graham was born on October 24, 1986 in Toronto, Ontario. Artists like Jay-Z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne and Clipse, as well as various R&B artists, inspired and influenced Drake’s rapping style since the beginning since his first mixtapes. Drake closed the decade with all five of his albums being classified as platinum.

In 2017, Drake released his Sixth Mixtape, which was also classified as platinum. The album presented us to new creative beats, instruments and sounds that together formed a diverse sound, a mix between R&B music and Hip Hop. The album also incluexclusive features such as Travis Scott, Quavo, 2 Chainz, Kanye West, Young Thug, and others. These features showed us how other artists can rap over a completely different beat from what we would normally hear them rapping to.

JUICE WRLD

arad Anthony Higgins, was born in Chicago, Illinois. Famously known as Juice WRLD, he was a fan of music since a young age, being influenced by a range of artists such as Kid Cudi, Chief Keef , Eminem, to Fall Out Boy and Black Sabbath. He started rapping on soundcloud in 2015, where he introduced us to his firsts Emo Raps.

In 2017, Juice WLRD dropped his first mixtape “999”, which included his soon-to-be hit song, “Lucid Dream (Forget Me)”. The addictive Sting sampled track, received an official single release in March 2018, and was later included in his first studio recorded album Goodbye & Good Riddance. The Platinum classified album peaked number 4 in the US Billboard 200, in which its hit song Lucid Dreams, peaked at number 2. Talking about love, drugs and depressions, Juice WRLD’s hit-album showed us a unique side of hip hop. The chill and melodic Mick Mira beats, put together with Juice WRLD amazing ability to rap and sing, left us all waiting for what would be coming next.

Juice WRLD passed away on December 8, 2019, after landing at Chicago’s Midway International Airport, where he suffered a seizure. The rapper had recently turned 21, and surprised the world with his passing.

XXXTENTACION

I

n 2018 XXXTentation impressed the music world with his most successful, yet diverse album “?”. The artist says in the first track: “...to show the versatility and to show the open- to open minds in itself was the goal of this album”, which clearly indicates that he wanted to create something different and unique from everything “discomforting but also comforting at the same time”.

Many musical genres are presented in the album such as Lo-Fi, trap, contemporary R&B, boom bap, latino music. It’s not just about the genres but also the instruments, as X introduces us to very unique sounds, some pleasing some are so much, which in the end build up a very exclusive and alternative sound. XXXTentation passed away on June 18, 2018, in Deerfield Beach, Florida, where he was assassinated inside his own car. It was an unexpected death, as the rapper was only 20 years old, and was at the peak of his career.
