a wonderful year In many respects, the academic year 19/20 will be remembered like no other. It was the beginning of a world-wide pandemic that simply changed the way we all lived and learned, however, while it is easy to forget the previous part of the academic year, we shouldn’t.

2019/20 was the first year of implementation for our strategic plan, the Future of Education. Now. We had focused our priorities on People and Program knowing that our investment in the place was coming soon. This report attests to the success of our initial investment phases where student/teacher ratios continued to improve, new courses were introduced, safety protocols were put in place and new IT investments and services were introduced as well.

We are proud to say that not only has this school proven itself to be an educational leader in our region by way of our response to the Covid-19 pandemic, but we have worked hard to move our organization further both systemically, and more importantly, educationally. Our Future of Education. Now. goals not only have laid a powerful foundation, but it empowered us to respond to unprecedented change.

To paraphrase from a speaker who “spoke” at our first virtual graduation, this was indeed a “wonderful year.”

people, programs The implementation of our Future of Education. Now. Strategic Plan did not begin with buildings or facilities. It began with investing in our most important resource, the staff and the programs we offer.

For example, the International School of Stuttgart e.V. (ISS) was excited to start the year with expanded Math and Science staffing that allowed for Learning Support staff to push into classrooms. We expanded German teaching in our Lower School divisions and also expanded EAL provision whole school even as we continued to train all of our staff on how to teach in an English as a second language environment through the TESCM certification program.

We also expanded our Diploma level courses, introducing Global Politics and Computer Science. This was the year we also introduced our new Coding course.

In our Lower Schools, we expanded our German provision so that all our younger students could take more German and we hired more EAL support to push into Lower School classrooms.

Keeping in mind our desire to invest in our People and Programs first, we invited in world renowned specialists such as Ms. Carol Ann Tomlinson to focus on our goals to increasingly personalize the learning experience. Our Admin teams were given project management training with Ms. Adriana Lehr and Avantalion and of course we continued with extensive IB training including working with Ms. Karim Ismail. We also continued to invest in mid-level leadership training with ECIS. 4

We worked with Dr. Fran Prolman to review our management and leadership structures for greater communication and efficiency which helped us expand our pastoral leadership and support through our new Assistant Principals roles. We also reviewed and implemented new hiring practices to align with greater child protection protocols and newer ways to attract best practice professionals to our school. We further developed our Intern program, worked with more external and professional search organizations, widened our interview teams to involve subject specialists and moved our hiring season forward to compete for the best candidates.

This was the year we focused on People and Programming in order to prepare for the coming investment in the educational environment, or what we call “the Place.�

School Leadership and the Board of Trustees worked very hard during the year to prepare for the ambitious investment in facilities primarily on our Degerloch Upper School Campus but in the Lower School and our Sindelfingen Campus as well.

This was the year ISS finalized our business and investment planning to support our educational vision. We worked with external financial experts and successfully negotiated with a variety of banks to provide appropriate financing for our future.

We also spent a great deal of time with students and faculty to review our educational priorities. The school and community worked with Architectural expert Ms. Kirsten Bartels from Hamburg to identify our priorities and best practices in order to best inform our building architects. This community exercise provided invaluable feedback to specific facility needs that worked in parallel with our competition for both a project manager and architectural firm. Once the school decided to work with project managers, CPM and the architectural firm, Ackermann and Raff, the alignment with our strategic community feedback with Ms. Bartels provided the essential background for an exciting building project. All along, the Board of Trustee’s Financial and Development committees have been carefully monitoring the project to remain in budget. This extensive process has culminated in an excellent design that will be unveiled in the academic year 2021/22. We will also be inviting Frau Bartels to return to review our facility needs on the Sindelfingen Campus.

vital roles Learning Assistants from both the Degerloch and Sindelfingen campuses came together for two full days to complete the International Baccalaureate Workshop entitled "The vital role of the learning assistant in the PYP." This was an opportunity for them to be trained in and develop their understanding of the PYP as well as how they can support the students and teachers with learning in the classroom. Our learning assistants really do a wonderful job, and we were delighted to be able to show our appreciation of how much we value them and provide them with this training opportunity to help them grow their skills even further. The learning assistants are now much more confident and aware of the structure, language and concepts of the PYP and they have created their own action plans which they shared with us as we consider the ways we can develop their roles and increase opportunities for collaboration with them.

covid-19 response The world changed in March 2019. So did our school. But here at ISS, we had already laid a strong foundation for a distance learning scenario through excellent IT educational technology provision, a creative and collaborative staff and most of all, an educational program that promotes independent or autonomous learning.

We chose to address the challenges of the pandemic by refocusing on our learning statement, “Learning at the core of all we do.” Keeping this priority was clearly at the heart of our move to distance learning. We defined distance learning as any learning that allows instructor, students, and content to be located in different locations so that instruction and learning occur independent of place and potentially time. We also very clearly described the expectations, procedures, and supports that were implemented during the period of school closure. We had a detailed Emergency Response Plan that helped us address both short and long-term closure scenarios and our primary goal was always to maintain as much continuity of learning as is possible.

This was why we were the first school in our region to successfully implement a distance learning program. We were the first school to implement a re-entry hybrid program in April of 2019 having negotiated opening conditions with the local authorities that became the template for other school re-openings. And ours was the first school to open in August in the “new” academic year.

steam investments

The academic year 2019/20 was a year where we continued to develop our well recognized STEAM programming. Our highly successful reapplication for MINT and DIGITALE SCHULE certification attested to our impressive programming and support of this strategically important aspect of our school.

We invested a great deal of time and effort in our Math and science staff as we adjusted to new Math course changes in the IB Diploma program. We trained 10th grade Math teachers in new MYP criteria and hired interns with backgrounds in both 8

Maths and Sciences. We also implemented a new Learning Support Team dedicated to Math and science support.

We enjoyed a successful collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology science program having worked with this prestigious university to clarify our needs and expectations for visiting young professionals who work with our students inside and outside the classroom. We expanded afternoon learning experiences to support math learning and boost confidence as well as expanding our association with the IB DP

Preparatory program Laterna and invested significantly in new online exercise tools and other resources such as new textbooks and learning materials for Math and Science.

STEAM initiatives continued to thrive and grow, especially as we had expanded our IT Coaching provision. This was a year where we implemented the use of more iPads in our lower school classrooms, expanded STEAM events, clubs and Robotics teams. As mentioned earlier, we finalized and started new Computer and coding courses and expanded our pre-coding tools and programs in our Lower Schools. But STEAM is not just about technology.

It is also focusing on our natural world which is why we were particularly happy to expand on the tradition enjoyed by Sindelfingen for years…building a garden.

On our Degerloch Lower School campus, the school managed to develop our outdoor learning program, especially in the Nest area for our youngest students.

Working together with the Gemuse Akadamie our students and their teachers built a large garden. The produce of this garden has been a delicious and healthy way to teach students nutrition and the miracle of growth.

Lastly, we recognized the need to continue to education our parental body with all of the changes and investment in our numeracy programs and as such, expanded educational forums, especially for Grades 9 and 10.

programming Python Programming through Cisco Networking Academy is offered to all Middle School students. 10 students took part in the first, of a two-course series that prepares students for PCEP - Certified Entry-Level Python Programmer and PCAP: Certified Associate in Python Programming certification exams. These programmes are developed by the Python Institute.

In 2018 the school began a partnership with the German non-profit organization, GemüseAckerdemie, to develop the Kindergarten garden, located on the Degerloch Early Years playground. Each year, with support from GemüseAckerdemie staff and volunteers, students plant the garden in the spring. With teacher support they tend to the garden - weeding, watering, and removing pests. The garden is particularly popular with slugs and the students have experimented with all kinds of deterrents, coffee grounds, eggshells, sand, and more, but the most effective technique continues to be collecting the slugs by hand, a task our risk-takers embrace wholeheartedly! Students are excited to observe, measure and discuss how the plants grow, but harvesting is certainly the highlight of the season. The first harvest happens before the summer, then staff volunteers help care for the garden during the holiday.

During summer, several summer school students also had the pleasure of “shopping” for fresh vegetables, with tomatoes and cucumbers being the most popular

“purchase” by far. Upon return from the summer holidays, a new Kindergarten class takes over and they have to jump right in as the fall planting is during the first week of school. Care and harvest continue until late fall with frequent opportunities to cook the crops in class. Students enjoy a variety of new and familiar dishes, including zucchini fries, pumpkin soup, green tomato bread, and even purple mashed potatoes, just to name a few. As the season draws to a close, students are responsible for helping collect and distribute leaves to the garden to serve as mulch and help the soil regenerate for another great growing season the following year. During the winter months, they continue learning about food and food production with a much more global focus, as they enjoy stories and activities related to sustainability through the GemüseAckerdemie materials featuring the world-traveling Rudy Radish and his Vegetable Friends.

Communication in our community continues to remain a complicated but important strategic imperative. In the academic year 2019/20 not only did we see a return of educational evenings for topics such as the new MYP programming or IB Math, we also saw the successful refinement of our portal newsletter system that became the central point of communication. While we still continue to audit the many other ways of communication at our school, we also began to utilize and manage new areas of social media whilst linking our newsletters to our portal systems and lobby displays for easier access.

Of course, much of this changed once the COVID-19 pandemic began, but the Veracross portal quickly became the primary source of information not only on our programs but on health queries and policy development as well.

While the pandemic did restrict our ability to finalize our new website, we were fortunate enough to produce a new video for our Sindelfingen campus that has been widely praised throughout the international educational community.

The removal of examinations by the IB required ISS and students to submit other pieces of assessment and school based information of predicted grades to arrive at an IB judged grade. The culmination of their two years’ study, our accuracy with predicated grades and the hard work of students and staff alike have resulted in above average achievement levels compared to world averages and in line with our school achievements.

• The average points total of those who passed was 33.5 points compared with 35 in 2019, 32 in 2018, 35 in 2017, 34 in 2016.

• 13% of our cohort gained 40 points or above with two students achieving 44 points out of a possible 45 being the highest.

• The average number of core points in 2020 was 1.7 compared with 2019 of 2 points, 2018 of 1.5 2 in 2017 and 1.7 in 2016.

top performance The Class of 2020 saw 60 IB Middle Years Programme students achieved a pass rate of 100%.

• Average points obtained by students who received the certificate was 42 points.

• Average grade obtained by students who received the certificate was 5.3 (out of 7).

• 56% of students who received the certificate scored 40 or more points (scored on average grade 5 or higher) - German Gymnasium entrance requirement.

• 32% of those who received the certificate also gained bilingual certification.

• The highest number of points obtained was 54 out of a possible 56 points.

Reports indicate that our students continue to perform better than their world-wide counterparts, in both core components of the MYP, Personal Project (PP), a precursor to the Extended Essay in the Diploma Programme and the Interdisciplinary Learning on-screen assessment.

Students in our Grade 10 completed the ISS version of eAssessments in the Middle Years Programme (MYP).

Taking part in these examinations takes a lot of effort, collaboration, time, confidence, optimism, and energy and these were fully on display. Students completed the MYP

on screen eAssessments in Mathematics, Language and Literature- English/German, Individuals and Societies and Integrated Sciences The eAssessments are on-screen exams assessing students on skills and conceptual understanding rather than just content mastery. Through the use of technology and the focus on deeper levels of understanding, the examination process was an engaging, positive experience for all of our students. With eAssessment, schools have the opportunity to consider students’ learning against clear standards of achievement for this age group. In turn, this will also inform our teaching practice at ISS.

From our first graduating class in 2000 with 13 students to the Class of 2020 with 65 ISS has had a total of 782 graduates, but, as an international school with an everchanging population, for us an alum is anyone who has spent time learning or teaching or being a parent at ISS and there have been thousands of those over the last 35 years.

Our alumni are scattered all over the world - attending schools and colleges, entering the world of work, developing careers, pursuing dreams - and yet many of them are still connected to and curious about their former school and the terrific people they met during their time at ISS. Maintaining those relationships are important to us. We have a closed Facebook group, closed Facebook class groups, a LinkedIn Alumni group and an alumni database that grows on a daily basis. In the school year 2019/20

we held a 10-year reunion for the Class of 2009 and they were joined by alumni from 2007, 2010, 2015, 2016 and 2017. 2019/20 also saw the first ever reunion for alumni living in the Detroit area in January 2020!

Good news came from many alumni in 2019/20, including from a member of the Class of 2003 and one of the founders of Mamma-Miya, an app that helps busy mothers prioritise and keep track of their schedules, who had been selected for the latest session of Apple Entrepreneur Camp.

Also, during the school year 2019/20 the school began the investigation of online platforms with the aim of offering alumni the chance to: • support current students at career events by handing down knowledge and experience, • find valuable academic and professional connections through a mentoring programme and • network outside the ISS community.

service as action fair

In September 2019, the annual MYP Service as Action took place, to help students understand and get to know the various possibilities there are of giving service within school community: for the school community, for the local community and the wider world. Stands were set up for the different ‘clubs’/service opportunities to show case what they offer and how students can become involved.

Local community opportunities included making ‘Worry-Eaters’ for a local hospice, becoming involved in the Zimbabwe School’s project, KIVA, assisting at the ‘International Café’ and the “Christmas in a Shoebox” project.

For the first time, outside agencies such as Friewillige Feurerwehr Stuttgart, Nabu and Naju, Stuttgart Tierschutzverein, DLRG and Help for Paws were also able to come and present or have information about their organisation displayed.

The Service as Action Fair was a wonderful opportunity to inform the students about our continuing commitment to supporting the refugee families in Degerloch through the International Café that we have been hosting since September 2016. Over 40 students signed up as volunteers and a significant number of them attended the first Café events in the first semester of the 2019/20 school year. Unfortunately the COVID-19 restrictions meant that subsequent Cafés had to be cancelled. But we look forward to being able to meet our neighbors from the refugee homes in the future!

Unfortunately MUN was cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite the cancellation of the conference, the 2020 MUNISS team, headed by Constantin Lahrs and Mudjahid Kramer ran a very successful MUN Day at ISS in preparation for the conference. They led their team through the planning of the conference and the subsequent cancellation. This was a painstaking process and difficult for the team, as the team was very excited to debate their 2020 theme, Responsible Production and Consumption with other countries and delegates around Europe and the world.

Bruna Arens and Lisa-Marie Nagel spent many hours communicating, in the difficult role of Communications with MUN directors and students from other schools, as they worked on cancelling the conference. The entire team learned so much about planning, leadership, organization and dedication throughout this process.

performing arts

The timely classic West Side Story played to the largest audiences the school has ever seen for a musical. The production proved to be a message of hope, noting that what William Shakespeare, Stephen Sondheim and Leonard Bernstein were writing about rings as true today as it did in the past. The Directors remarked the clear parallels of Maria’s leadership and empowerment promoted a message of unity instead of division.

The production featured students of all ages in our Upper Schools and continued the tradition of our collaboration with students and staff from the Fritz Leonhardt Schule.

We also continued to enjoy alumni support with lighting design and installation and the show featured an impressive setting that combined energetic and passionate dances with full stage projection and interaction.

The performing arts at Sindelfingen was as vibrant as ever, even in a somewhat virtual world! Grades 6 and 7 students participated in virtual workshops with JOiN for the very first time! Students practiced working with their camera, acting, moving, singing,

conducting, and finally auditioning for the big role of the “Hexe” – the “Witch” of Hansel und Gretel. In the spring, the Primary School came together from their computers at home to create a production online called “The Show Must Go Online”. The story is about a school whose Drama department was being shut down and they were not able to perform their “Brushes with Greatness- Dental Hygiene Musical”. The students came together from their homes and showed how, no matter the circumstances, to create their musical from home.

From singing toothbrushes to an epic battle scene with multiple dolls and plush toys, they were able to take down Plaque and Gingivitis and our students had a lot of fun and creative ways to perform their parts - from home. The play consisted of 16 students ages 6-11 who worked hard each week to figure out their parts, their costumes, their setting, their lighting and technological needs all individually throughout the lock down to put together a sensational performance.

ISS Athletics had a very successful start in the fall season with our GISST Cross Country Team in Berlin. Two students stood out with their great performance, and placed in the top five athletes of the tournament.

Wesley Hollowell, who finished the final race in second place and Ida Falkeström in fourth place in their divisions.

ISS also had the great honor of hosting the GISST U14 Boys Football Tournament in Stuttgart. We welcomed over 90 guest students from international schools all over Germany who were housed by ISS families. On the same weekend, our GISST Football Varsity Boys Team traveled to the final GISST tournament in Leipzig. Both teams showed great team spirit, reaching the final and finishing the tournament in second place. Two more trophies were added to the trophy cabinet!

The Sportverein Track & Field Team was very successfully in three local tournaments: 25. LO Schülersportfest des LAC Degerloch, LO Abschlusssportfest Track & Field and Regional-Jugendhallenmeisterschaften. The Track & Field Team collected 10 medals overall.

Julian Bowe (two gold), Emma Tenten (gold), Giorgia Pellegrini (gold), Alexis Reed (gold and silver), Paul Feinauer-Geoghegan (two silver and bronze) and Lauren Reed (silver).

The ISS sport teams continued their successful performance in the winter season, participating in the GISST Swim Tournament in Frankfurt. The team collected nine medals. Alexia Bezner (two silver and one bronze), Emanuelle Bezner (silver), Marc Plöger (gold, silver and Bronze) and Marius Plöger (gold and bronze).

After a very successful pre-season for our GISST Basketball Teams, with great results in the friendly tournaments, the GISST league decided to cancel the remaining tournaments for the season due to the rise of Covid-19. At this point of the season, our Sportverein U18 Girls had reached the finals and the U16 Boys

Basketball Team was already crowned the Kreisliga Champion!

During the lock down, all sport activities were put on hold from March 15 until May 9. Yoga Classes, Hip Hop and Irish Dance continued to be offered online through the whole lock down period.

Our fitness coach Natalia Wisniewska, (member of the German Kick Boxing National Team and international Ninja Warrior competitor) created workout video sessions, including full body, core and mobility work outs for the entire ISS community.

The ISS Sportverein was among the first ones in Stuttgart to resume after the easing of restrictions on sport activities with outdoor running sessions for athletes and continued to follow the guidelines given by the Sports and Health Authorities. With further easing of restrictions, the Sportverein was able to resume Track, Basketball and Soccer practice, always strictly following the regulations given by the Authorities.

summer@iss was thrilled to welcome a record 543 campers over 7 weeks for a memorable summer unlike any other. We were especially excited to expand our offerings for older children with the addition of a twoweek Track Camp for ages 13-17 at the beginning of the summer as well as opening enrollment in our “Traditional Camp� up to 13 years olds.

Parents approached us about next summer as well as the potential to offer additional camps and with the next generation of camp leaders being nurtured directly in school, we are excited for what the future holds.

To meet the growing needs of the program, we offered three different age groups and are proud to say that no child was turned away from the opportunity to experience the magic of camp this summer. Parents have said that it was the best summer yet, with many children requesting additional weeks and prolonging their enrollments.

Many of the children aging out of the program have asked if it is possible for them to return next summer and we are confident that we can build on this momentum to offer even more teenage oriented programming. summer@iss also introduced new leadership opportunities for our Middle Years and Diploma Years students. Not only were the majority of our beloved staff members from our graduating class of 2020, but we were able to welcome 11 students ranging from ages 14-17 to the inaugural year of our summer@iss Leadership Institute. The Leadership Institute is an opportunity for engaged teens with interest working with children to prepare for future work as camp instructors and gain confidence and community among the staff.
