The new millennium launched the first graduating class of ISS. Countless memories later, our school continues to thrive and influence the lives of graduates and their families all over the world. We all share a common connection as well as a common purpose, a common goal to be positive participants in the world we live in.

It has been our collective privilege to be a part of the ISS family. To quote Anna Pfoertsch of the Class of 2016, the meaning of "privilege" is not only having the freedom to do whatever you want, but having the freedom to do what you think needs to be done.”

The Class of 2020 had their graduation without any other adults present. For them, sitting and thinking about their future without their families was a powerful reminder of how much they had been affected by societal change.

As I said to them, “you can either fear those changes or embrace them. The silver lining that you face is one of opportunity. And you sit here today, surrounded by your peers but not your family. Not your teachers. Just one another. And that too speaks of a world where you go forth as an individual knowing you have the support of those who are not here. You are on your own, but you are not alone.”

In 2018, I told the graduates that “the very action of taking a diploma should be more than a recognition of what brought you here. It should be like passing a baton in a

relay. In representation of everyone here, I am handing you your baton for OUR future. It is time for you to join us and take up the race.”

And in the 2015 graduation, I remarked that a graduation day “is the last day you will be together in the way that has shaped your current self. Tomorrow will be the first day you take this identity further. I believe that this journey will be a rich one for you because I also believe that you genuinely appreciate that you cannot and will not take this journey alone.

The common theme is that an ISS education is a shared experience. It is something that will always be a part of us and I am proud to be a part of such a vibrant family of lifelong learners.

ur alumni are scattered all over the world - attending schools and colleges, entering the world of work, developing careers, pursuing dreams - and yet many of them are still connected to and curious about their former school and the terrific people they met during their time at ISS. Maintaining Alumni relationships is important to us. We have a closed Facebook group, closed Facebook class groups, a LinkedIn Alumni group and an alumni database that grows on a daily basis. In the school year 2019/20 we held a 10-year reunion for the Class of 2009 and they were joined by alumni from 2007, 2010, 2015, 2016 and 2017. 2019/20 also saw the first ever reunion for alumni living in the Detroit area in January 2020!

In the Summer of 2021, one member of the Class of 2013 commented that attending an international school had been a very special experience and meant one had friends scattered all over the world.

Wherever they were studying at other schools or colleges or entering the world of work many of our alums found themselves locked down on campus or working from home for long periods in the 2020/21 school year.

As with teaching and learning, the pandemic meant that much of our alumni outreach had to be through our online platforms in 2020/21 but we have been pleased to see our LinkedIn alumni group continue to grow. Despite the pandemic there have been weddings, there have been moves - amongst others from Seattle to New York, from Singapore to Munich and from New York to Stuttgart.

There have also been alumni returning to Stuttgart to do their distance learning from here rather than from a locked-down, shared flat elsewhere. While it has been great to see them around Stuttgart, we are sad for them missing out on all the experiences of living away from home for the first time.

A growing and particularly appreciated development in 2020/21 is how alums have engaged with our older students. Whether through live or online sharing of their chosen field of study and work or through sharing their tips and experience of coping with that challenging final IB year in the “Alumni Stories” initiated by the ISS PAC and supported by the Alumni Office, our alums have given much appreciated support and advice to our Diploma Programme students.

Sadly, the pandemic also put a brake on the investigation of online platforms for alumni as companies that we had been in touch with had to respond to their country lockdown rules. However, we are committed to pursuing this with the aim of offering alumni the chance to: • • •

support current students at career events by handing down knowledge and experience, find valuable academic and professional connections through a mentoring programme and network outside the ISS community.

CLASS NOTES Wherever you are on the ISS timeline, what better reason for not just looking back on years of successes but also for looking to the future?

ISS is a community, and being part of a community is about sharing our success stories. We would love to hear yours so share it with us via alumni@issev.de!

1985 Founding families establish ISS with 16 students in three composite classes. The school was located in the Böblingen Waldheim.

1986 enrolment had doubled and the school was seeking new premises for the start of the 1986/87 school year. A vacant state school in Möhringen provided space for the addition of a Kindergarten class and a home for the Elementary School for the next 12 years.

1980s 1990s

By 1993 8th grade had been added and an expected enrolment of around 100 students led the school to look for additional accommodation. The availability of a pavilion at the Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Degerloch enabled the Middle School (Grades 5 to 8) to move to more spacious premises with the use of sports and science facilities.

The 1999 campus plan foresaw the bringing together of the Elementary and Middle Schools in purpose-built accommodation in Degerloch and the extension of classes into the High School with the IB Diploma. The 1999/2000 school year was the first ISS graduation ceremony with 13 students.

2001 saw more temporary classrooms (“the Shoebox”) for part of the Middle School, and the new building for the Elementary School. ISS gained accredited status with CIS and NEASC. The school was welcoming a new Director and the new buildings were completed and ready for the up to 450 students who were to attend during the 2001/02 school year.

An additional sports hall, classrooms for the Middle School and community facilities covered the school years 2009/10 to 2012/13. Renovation of all the existing Science labs on both campuses and an additional, fifth lab in Degerloch in took place in 2013. The renovations came in time for the introduction of the STEAM initiative in 2014 and the Sindelfingen Campus was authorised to run the IB MYP.

The SV-ISS Sportverein and the opening of the second campus in Sindelfingen took place in 2003. The SV was established to build a bridge for our students to the well-established German sports community and to enable them to play in the local soccer and basketball leagues.

The establishment of the International Café took place 2016 and ISS was recognised as “MINT-freundliche Schule” and “Digital Schule” in 2019 and the start of the Driving Learning Forward initiative to capture the ideas, passions and collective reflection of the whole ISS community in terms of the future of education.

2005 saw Habitat for Humanity volunteer construction trips with students working alongside low-income families to build family shelter.

This year saw the change of how we taught and learnt through distance learning and the graduates of 2020 celebrated their graduation without guests. Five years of KIVA with 896 loans made to date.

Social responsibility is also a feature of MUN and our students hosted an English language MUN conference for the first time in 2008.

In January 2010 the former state bank building in the Goldberg area of Sindelfingen, became Sindelfingen Campus’ new home and at the heart of the school, “Treffpunkt Learning”. 2011 saw the establishment of Summer@ISS in Degerloch. Over the years around 2300 children have attended Summer@ISS;

In 2021 following nine months of intensive collaboration the school started with the building of new facilities to house yearbased clusters for students, new Arts facilities, a theater and a full-service kitchen. This meant the demolition of part of the original yellow building over the summer and the installation of temporary classrooms on the pitch.

Construction of the new facilities began in 2022 and the school Director embarks on a European tour to meet alumni in London, Amsterdam, Munich, Berlin and of course Stuttgart.

HUMAN TOUCH

I

n November 2020 Ms Sarah Kupke decided for personal and professional reasons to step down as the Head of the Sindelfingen Campus and continue to work part-time for ISS as a Coach and Coordinator for our new professional development initiative entitled Driving Learning Forward.

In August 2021, Frau Kupke was appointed as Head of Professional Learning for a leading international school consortium called the Educational Collaborative for International Schools (ECIS). She continues to consult with us here at ISS on a part-time basis and we are excited to be able to continue to collaborate with her under the auspices of her new responsibilities with this other impressive organization.

In my first 6 months at ISS, we have celebrated becoming an IBPYP school and in doing so, completing the picture of ISS offering the PYP, MYP across both campuses. As we move into the future, we are exploring how we can continue our evolution and look at opportunities to revisit how our learning spaces can be reimaged, thus embracing the ISS The Future of Education. Now. values. Of all the things that make ISS special, I am especially excited to build on the connections that the school has with the local community.

During my time in Asia, I completed my master’s research in building a community of dual language learners and how this learning can extend beyond the classroom and the school and into the local community. ISS provides a wonderful opportunity to put this idea into action. What makes our campus very distinct is how committed our learners, our teachers and our parents are to reach out and collaborate with local business and organizations in the Sindelfingen area. We know that the best schools are those where the relationships within then and the relationships they build beyond the school walls are of a very high quality and are central to everything they do. I am very privileged to be able to lead ISS Sindefingen through this next phase of its journey and help it to build on the wonderful sense of community that it already has, whilst continuing to strive for the education excellence.

n August 2021, I was delighted to join ISS as the new Head of the Sindelfingen Campus. Although I had come into the ISS community with over 20 years of experience in international schools, I knew that the wonderful work that had preceded me, under the leadership of Ms Kupke needed to not only continue, but also evolve. I came to ISS as an IB educator (I have taught Early Years through to T.O.K in Grade 12) and leader and as someone who knows 10

s Alba Pincay-Clauss started at ISS as the English as an Additional Language (EAL) specialist in 1997 and retired in June 2020. One of the lessons she learnt is that teaching provides a variety of experiences and allows for continued ‘life-long learning’ in every aspect of the word. Ms Pincay-Clauss had many plans for her retirement, she would like to travel to Gombe, Tanzania to visit Jane Goodall’s chimp camp.

s Valerie Lark-Webler, our former Director of External Relations retired in April 2021 but continues to work with ISS as an external consultant. Ms Lark-Webler’s impact has been enormous over the more than 20 years of her employ here at ISS. She has been a highly respected Facility Manager and a valued member of our Leadership Team. She has built contacts with local corporations, communities and our alumni.

Ms Lark-Webler was also the colleague most responsible for finding our Sindelfingen facility and has been instrumental in the development of our renovation plans and of course the current Degerloch Upper School project and she will continue to assist us with these projects. Ms Lark-Webler’s work has always centered around supporting student learning and her gentle, and highly organized approach has always been greatly appreciated and respected.

s Mary Ellen Friday-Liebheit “graduated” from ISS after 19 years of service in October 2020. She was a passionate, caring and forthright teacher who took time to encourage students to take up handicrafts such as sewing and knitting and supported the “Worry Eaters” Project, helping ill children.

Ms Friday-Liebheit planned on filling her retirement days with writing, gardening, and exhibitions.

n Memoriam. We were very sorry to pass on the news that Mr Jens Knickmeier passed away in May 2021. During his impressive tenure, he taught German and Physical Education and honorably served on our School Works Council. He was, in addition, a talented photographer whose work has helped the school celebrate its history as he had been an integral part of the ISS community from its very beginnings. Mr. Knickmeier was a kind and caring colleague and educator. He will forever be remembered for his behind-the-scenes support for students and colleagues alike. We have established the Jens Knickmeier Coaches Award in recognition of his work with physical education on both campuses over the years.

Waldpedagogic Early Years Playground Some of you may remember that the original Early Years location on the current Degerloch campus was located in the wing across from the Director’s office. This was one of the reasons that side of the campus had the wooden walls and the big doors to the outside.

When the current Lower School was built, the Early Years moved to the far end of the school.

In fact the land across from the new classrooms was referred to as “Land’s End” and was not usable until 2009 when the Degerloch authorities granted permission for its use as we prepared the temporary facilities for what became known as the “Nest.” Three years later, when the younger students moved back into the “Discovery Center” the school invested into new wooden elements and we had a beautiful awning installed thanks to the generosity of the Rasch family. In recent years, we have expanded this extraordinary facility with a full service garden, a little Swiss hut to store our play vehicles, a greenhouse made from recycled plastic bottles, a mud kitchen and a new learning amphitheatre made from stones taken from the old Pavillion classrooms behind the Upper School sports hall.

Now, our youngest students enjoy outdoor learning in one of the most attractive Early Years play spaces in the Association of German International Schools!

THE FUTURE BEGINS

For years, our school built a reputation as one of the leading international schools in Germany. But while we continued to take pride in a variety of educational metrics we recognized that there will always be a desire to provide the highest educational quality possible for each one of our learners.

So, for over a year, ISS reflected on learning together, through the Driving Learning Forward initiative, recognizing that expectations are changing as the world changes too. As such, we came to understand that if we really want a quality school, we cannot afford the status quo on either campus. We cannot just make a change, we need to make a difference.

In 2017, we initiated a community-wide discussion concerning the future of ISS and the future of learning. Working with representatives of what we call “The Triangle” (students, parents, teachers), we distilled the feedback into specific educational values and worked together to develop specific actions to support vision for the future of education. Now. It is interesting, in these times, that over 44% of all commentary 2 years ago emphasized the impact of technology and 24% spoke of the importance of personalized learning. A total of 38% spoke of life balance and environmental sustainability.

It seems like our community really was thinking ahead.

Our Vision

For 35 years, ISS has provided world class education for globally mobile international and internationally minded families. We have supported student learning and we have supported the increasingly diverse needs of those companies and individual families who support the economic vision of Stuttgart.

But now we want to be a beacon of learning for humanity. We want to deliver learning for a future filled with opportunity not only for the students in our school, but for learners throughout Baden-Württemberg and the world.

In 2019, the ISS Board of Trustees voted to accept an investment plan that addressed the staffing needs to support our Future of Education Now vision. The second step was to begin investment in technology and programming. The third step, ratified early in 2020 was to move forward with the largest facility investment in ISS history. We called this investment plan People. Program.

Place. and it is testimony to forward thinking. In fact, accreditation visitors have specifically praised the school for linking learning impact to investment and in 2021, ISS was a finalist nominee for the Strategic Planning Prize for the International School Awards held in London.

While the single largest investment is in the Degerloch upper school facility, the school is also planning spatial renovation both in the Lower School of Degerloch; reevaluating STEAM facilities, the library and learning hubs already implemented to allow for greater collaborative opportunities for our younger students.

The Sindelfingen Campus has also begun a review of how best to allocated learning space flexibility with improvement in play and performing spaces as well as the potential expansion of our Early Years facilities.

CUTTING EDGE We broke ground on the 5th of July 2021 for a cuttingedge Upper School facility that will support our strategic aspirations to be a beacon of 21st century education.

With Science Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) at the heart of our educational dreams this facility will provide: • • • •

Expanded state of the art science facilities Expanded and improved Design Makerspaces for engineering exploration Expanded and improved Performance and Visual Arts facilities to celebrate creativity Cutting-edge collaborative educational spaces that exchanges the traditional classroom space for a variety of learning environments that supports clustered and personalized learning A full service kitchen with a variety of healthy food stations throughout the building Environmentally friendly construction and an advanced sustainable solar and heat pump resource solution Open spaces and terraces that encourage learning in the fresh air

The building will cost nearly 17 million and with additional taxes, fees for planning and the expenses of the interim solution over the two years, the overall project will cost just under 25 million. The school will pay for this building through a careful and prudent long term tuition increase plan and specific fund raising initiatives. The building is scheduled to be completed by August 2023.

Where & Why

Local regulations limit significant reconstruction on our Sindelfingen Campus and our Degerloch Lower School Campus. However, we can expand where our Degerloch Upper School campus is located. This is great because this is also where we have our oldest buildings!

Connections Before Curriculum

Our school believes in collaborative learning and this new facility emphasizes learning relationships between students and their teachers in a variety of learning environments that take advantage of our excellent student to teacher ratio.

Outside Opportunities

Health and Wellness are key priorities for the building project, but this also includes significant investment in our outdoor spaces to provide great resources for our Physical Education & Afternoon Activities Programs.

12 years ago, the class of 2004 found themselves an idea. They could work with their homeroom teacher to occupy a temporarily empty space as a sort of senior class clubhouse. Formerly the IT workroom, the space had been vacated just prior to the construction of our Middle School and Upper School Sport Hall. They called it “Purgatory”.

We call it an idea ahead of its time.

Our new building project has an established space where our IB Diploma cohorts can learn in a quiet area for testing and collaboration. But we want more for our oldest students. We want a flexible space with flexible furniture and presentational work walls. We want a space capable of hosting conferences as well as conversations. We want an area where networking and exposure to visiting experts

and leaders can directly connect students with their future.

We want an area where the older student community can come together and share their needs, their ideas and their learning.

The ISS IB Diploma Center will be dedicated to supporting our oldest student community in their final year at ISS. It will be an inspirational hub, an innovative launch pad where dreams are discussed, and friendships are forged for a lifetime of being an ISS Alumnus.
