The property is also a very short drive from the medieval hilltop town of Capalbio, with its myriad of fashionable shops and restaurants.

The house has a large swimming pool, which has to be shared, from time to time, with a charming and discreet Roman family that live in a small cottage that also belongs to the owners of Casa Il Giardino. Guests of Casa Il Giardino will always have priority when it comes to using the pool and the fact that it may be used occasionally by this other family should have no bearing on guests’ privacy or enjoyment of a wonderful tranquil spot in glorious countryside.

C

apalbio is a charming medieval town, very lively all year round, but most of all, in the summer. From the ancient crenelated walls, rebuilt by Siena in order to defend the center, you can admire a breathtaking view of the Maremma area. The fortress of Aldobrandeschi with its tall tower stands out over the red roofs of the stone homes. Next to it is the Collacchioni Palace dating back to the Renaissance period which displays the piano used by Giacomo Puccini when on holidays here.

In the main square, you’ll find the Church of San Nicola from the 12th-13th centuries decorated with Romanesque capitals and Renaissance frescoes. Outside the walls is the Oratory of the Providence with beautiful 16th century frescoes attributed to the school of Pinturicchio.

From May through October Capalbio and its surroundings are animated by festivals, feasts and events. The most important event is the Capalbio Cinema International Short Film Festival showcasing shorts from all around the world.

WINE & TRUFFLES Culinary Excursions

T

he Tuscan landscape of ripe fields, perfectly arranged vineyards, and winding lanes produces some of Italy’s finest food and wine. Rich, intense truffles, silky smooth, fruity olive oil, and even the vivid crimson of saffron are all celebrated in regional and local dishes.

If you are looking to savour some of the finest wine whilst being surrounded by the most beautiful works of art, produced by the esteemed contemporary artist Sandro Chia, then look no further than spending a day in the enchanting fortress of Romitorio.

Acquired by the great artist in 1984, Chia has since lovingly restored the estate to its former glory, which is now a showcase for his many masterpieces. The winery has been producing wine for the past 20 years which is nothing short of exceptional, already receiving many accolades worldwide.

As hunting and foraging are a traditional pastime, wild boar is also one of the most prized items on the menu. Towns such as Capalbio are well know for wild boar - just take a look at any of the restaurant menus and you’ll find it in every form imaginable.

And in September, there’s the saga del cinghiale, a fifty-yearold food festival dedicated to the animal.

THERMAL BATHS of Saturnia

F

ormed by the gods and enjoyed by mortals, the Saturnia Hot Springs are a peaceful and relaxing wellness break in the less-touristy area of coastal Tuscany, Maremma.

The waters remain at about a steamy 37.5°C (99.5°F), and have been used for centuries for their therapeutic properties as much as they have been for relaxation (in itself an effective therapy!).

Ancient Etruscan and Roman ruins clearly attest to this.

The waters remain clean, pouring out about 800 liters per second, and that rotten egg smell is a natural characteristic of sulfur.

Both European and Japanese cultures have believed in balneotherapy,—partaking in hot mineral baths as a natural treatment for ills and diseases—for thousands of years.

he springs are free to splash around in and enjoy, but if you’d like more privacy and the cleanest, clearest waters that bubble up directly from the source, head to the Terme di Saturnia Spa and Resort upstream. There, for €25 a day, you may partake in the healing sulfur waters. The resort also offers massages, Roman baths, golfing, and more wellness activities, plus two restaurants, one of which is Michelin-starred.

GIARDINO DI TAROCCHI

S

omething of a Bohemian Rhapsody, De Saint Phalle’s Giardino dei Tarocchi can be found in all its whimsical glory, a stone throw from the mediaeval town of Capalbio. With a nod to the likes of greats such as Gaudi or Pollock, I Giardino dei Tarocchi, was somewhat a labour of love for De Saint Phalle, which she privately funded and opened in 1998. The sculpture garden set in the heart of the Tuscan countryside, is made up of 22 elaborate houses, each based on a card taken from a deck of Tarot cards. Each house is comprised of a kitchen, a living room and a meditation space. “Life is a game of cards whose rules we do not know” is the central message that De Saint Phalle ascribed to her eccentric sculptures, that receive hundreds of visitors every year.
