Laser wheel alignment uses the position of lasers on a scale to check if the wheels of the vehicle are set up as they should be.

CCD computerised aligners use ‘measuring heads’ containing ‘Charged Coupled Device’ sensors, which are fitted to each wheel. These are able to communicate their physical positioning to a main computer, which then calculates, coordinates and displays the findings. 4, 6 and 8 sensor versions are available – the more sensors, the more measurements that can be recorded.

3D wheel aligners typically use a “Crucifix” three-dimensional imaging system with two cameras and wheel-mounted, reflective ‘targets’. These two ‘measuring heads’ read the physical position of the 3D targets attached to the wheels. As there are no electronics inside the targets there’s less to go wrong if they’re dropped.

Some will argue that 3D alignment technology is better than CCD technology; it’s not, it is simply a different technology.

The Logik 6 offers advanced features such as Number Plate Recognition and ADASready software, together with remote control operation, meaning that wheel alignment can be carried out from any position around the vehicle. A dedicated Spoiler Program automatically activates when dealing with modified or lowered vehicles.

Sphere does away with outdated elements of crucifix-style 3D systems such as the additional space required in front of the lift and ‘pushing and pulling’ the vehicle.

Approved by vehicle manufacturers including Mercedes-Benz and BMW, Sphere is equipped with an Autodata database and is therefore suitable for every kind of vehicle regardless of make or model.

ADAS & MOT

In reality, ADAS is little more than a camera system, often mounted in the windscreen, monitoring short to medium range activities such as changing speed limits, or white lines; and a radar system, located in the front grill area, managing active cruise control and emergency braking systems.

These days wheel alignment is a normal part of maintaining a vehicle – if the geometry falls out of tolerance, the car may not drive correctly and the tyres might wear out quickly. The same principle applies to ADAS; after any repair that could affect the alignment (or view) of the camera and radar systems, it’s important to ensure they are working correctly and are correctly aligned – and for this you need an ADAS alignment rig to test and re-align them.

A frontal impact can misalign the radar unit, or a windscreen replacement can misalign the camera, so that the ADAS systems don’t work correctly. This is where ADAS alignment systems come in and it’s where some garages have invested in equipment and are making money.
