Welcome This time of year is always uncertain, unanchored by the Christmas now long gone, and characterised by a spring that hasn’t quite sprung and weather that is unpredictable at best. But at the ISM, the arrival of March only means two things.

The first is that the countdown to Members Day has now officially begun, which is tremendously exciting. This year we are delighted to be at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire on 16 April. We have a glittering programme ready for you to enjoy: we welcome back Katy Hamilton for an ‘In Conversation’ with the distinguished composer Param Vir, and performances from BBC Young Musicians Lauren Zhang and Xhosa Cole. The second is Brexit. The UK’s exit from the EU is looming, and there is still little to no certainty for musicians and their work post-Brexit. We continue to campaign for the maintenance of freedom of movement or a two-year working visa to be introduced, as we know from previous research that the number one priority for musicians is the maintenance of freedom of movement. To ensure we have the most full and up-to-date picture of how Brexit continues to affect musicians as we speed towards 29 March, we have launched a fourth survey, which will close on 15 March. Please do take the time to respond – the more responses we have, the more robust our evidence will be. Take part at bit.ly/ISMbrexitsurvey Lastly, on 4 February, the APPG for Music Education (in partnership with the ISM and the University of Sussex) published a report titled Music Education: State of the Nation. The report is the culmination of several months’ rigorous research into both music education and the broader education landscape in England.

It also digs deep into the government’s own figures while bringing together academic research, surveys and analysis of current trends, and asking serious questions regarding the direction of travel of current education policy. We are grateful to the APPG for Music Education, Dr Ally Daubney and Gary Spruce who, alongside the ISM, wrote this report. News & campaigns Music Education: State of the Nation published by the APPG for Music Education On Monday 4 February, the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Music Education, in partnership with the University of Sussex and ISM released a new report entitled Music Education: State of the Nation which outlines the broad landscape of music education in England. The report was born out of a desire to identify the more pressing issues facing music education and come up with possible solutions. This research and analysis draws together all available research, data and statistics into one comprehensive document for everyone to access and make use of in their own professional lives.

The key findings of the report • The EBacc is failing on its own terms. 38% of students in state-funded schools are entering it. This is against the Government’s target figure of 75% by 2022 (90% by 2025). In 2017/2018 only 16.7% of students attained it, a fall of over 4% from 2016/2017.

GCSEs should be scrapped and replaced, says Conservative MP GCSEs should be scrapped and replaced by a qualification that recognises academic and technical skills alongside personal development, Robert Halfon MP, the chairman of the Commons Education Select Committee, has said.

Speaking at the launch of the Edge Foundation’s Future Learning Project Based Learning Toolkit for teachers and schools, he said he believed young people needed to develop technical skills alongside subject knowledge in order to thrive in an increasingly automated and digital age.

Brexit developments

ABO conference The ISM was a sponsor of the Association of British Orchestras conference, which this year took place in Belfast. Our Chief Executive Deborah Annetts chaired a fascinating panel discussion looking at the impact of Brexit on the sector. Panellists, including Ulster Orchestra chair Stephen Peover, deputy chair of IAMA Helen Sykes and chair of the ABO finance managers group Ivan Rockey, joined Deborah in spelling out the dire implications of a no-deal Brexit for the sector, and the wider problems musicians will encounter after the end of freedom of movement even under a withdrawal agreement. Deborah used the panel discussion, and her pre-concert speech to conference attendees, to call for continued freedom of movement for musicians after the UK leaves the EU.

Newham consultation We were very sorry to see that Newham Council has made plans to end its Every Child a Musician programme, which provides free music tuition and instruments to children in Newham. The scheme has benefited thousands of children in some of the most deprived areas of London, and put Newham on the map as a national example of innovative and high-quality local music provision. We responded to a consultation on the plans in January; this has now closed, but we encourage ISM members and supporters to contact Newham Council to express their views about why the scheme must continue.

New Centre for Music A new Centre for Music in London has been announced by the Barbican, London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and Guildhall School of Music & Drama. We welcome the new Centre for Music and the innovative vision of the team leading its creation. We are looking forward to it making an immense contribution to the cultural life of our great city and in the wider context of music education. However, while the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) continues to exclude creative subjects, music education in our secondary schools will continue to disappear, and we are concerned that the talent for the future will just not materialise.

Musa runs the London Marathon On Sunday 28 April the ISM’s Finance Officer Musa Kazmi is taking on the challenge of running the London Marathon to raise funds for the ISM Members Fund. The 24-hour helpline to which members and their families have access is funded by the Members Fund. Over the past year more members than ever before have contacted the helpline about a range of issues including bereavement, relationship troubles, low mood, depression and anxiety amongst others.

The 26.2-mile marathon course takes in some of London’s best-known sights. Please support Musa and help raise funds for the ISM family so that we can continue to expand the range of support on offer.

Shape the future work of the ISM Members Fund Over the past 18 months the ISM Members Fund has been undertaking a comprehensive review of its work with the aim of developing its services, so it can deliver much greater support to a larger number of ISM members. The text below is a short extract from the first chapter of one of the resources: How to… Connect with a digital audience. In it, Chris Cooke from CMU tackles the world of streaming, with a guide to music rights, the online sites and services that will get your music heard and how to find an audience once your music is online. Getting your music and finding an audience online The single biggest revolution in music caused by the shift to digital is that artists can now get their recordings to a global audience and communicate with a global fanbase by themselves. Doing so does require signing up to some platforms, buying some distribution services and joining a collecting society, but all of this can be done with minimal cost and minimal expertise.

This chapter explains how you can get your music online, how you can earn money when your music is downloaded or streamed, how you can try to drive more listening, and how you can use your various digital channels to grow and engage a fanbase.

Some top tips on digital streaming Spotify and Apple Music are the biggest global premium streaming services, but you want your music on all the platforms all over the world, including the ones you’ve never heard of!

A distributor can help you get your music on and earn money from most of the streaming platforms. But if you wrote the song, you are also due extra royalties, which will probably come from PRS and MCPS. Everyone talks about per-stream rates, but the way streaming services pay out is more complicated than that. However, one simple fact is that when a premium subscriber streams your music you earn lots more than when your track is played on a free service.

Streaming only works if people listen to your music again and again and again. What can you do to persuade people to keep coming back to your tracks on Spotify or Apple Music?

Most fans will want to stream your music on their streaming service of choice. But some fans will want a more direct relationship. That direct relationship is really valuable. So make it easy for those fans to connect and spend money.

This means that early-career artists can release music and start building a fanbase without having any traditional music industry business partners – like management, a label or a publisher – in place.

As the artist’s career progresses and their own artist business starts to grow they will probably want a manager, a label and a publisher on their team.

But none of those partners are necessary to get started. ism.org/ advice-centre And, indeed, these days most managers, labels and publishers will expect an artist to have set things in motion before they come on board.

Three’s company Partnership working enables London’s Tri-borough Music Hub to stage large-scale inclusive performances that benefit students and teachers alike. Clare Stevens finds out more

Just one music service or music education hub has ever won a prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society Award: London’s Tri-borough Music Hub, which scooped the Learning and Participation prize in 2016 for the oratorio Seven Seeds, commissioned by the hub with its strategic partners the Royal Albert Hall (RAH), Royal College of Music (RCM) and Aurora Orchestra. The citation commended the project for its ‘inclusive nature ... which created a musical legacy of excellence and raised aspiration for future arts engagement’, adding that ‘its rich, sophisticated and uncompromising musical language was accessible to young people, irrespective of age, ability and culture’.

When I meet the head of the Tri-borough Hub, Stuart Whatmore, another major collaborative performance in the RAH is just weeks away, and this one, he says, is on an even larger scale: ‘It’s the biggest thing we’ve ever done.’

Convo, he explains, is a 70-minute, threemovement, through-composed piece by ‘an amazing young emerging composer, Charlotte Harding, whom we found through a call-out two and a half years ago. Throughout autumn 2017 and spring 2018, Charlotte devised, led and delivered creative research and development workshops in eight primary/secondary/SEND schools and with five music hub ensembles. She was assisted by a team of RCM student mentors and together they led the pupils through tailored musical activities which resulted in music that will be included in the final score.’

The title, Convo, is short for ‘conversation’.

The piece explores how from our Earth’s beginnings to the connected world we live in today, music has always been a universal means of communication – from bird songs to love songs, ancient scores to film scores, Morse code to coding, it gives us all a voice and our lives a soundtrack. It will be performed on 7 March by a massed instrumental ensemble of around 120 young musicians from

the hub, playing side-by-side with professional musicians, supporting a massed chorus of around 1000 primary, secondary and special school pupils, and conducted by Ben Palmer.

Bringing together a range of organisations to support participatory performances like this in what is arguably the UK’s most iconic concert venue, the RAH, is just one aspect of the Tri-borough Hub’s work. It was established in August 2012 to oversee the delivery of music education in three West London boroughs – the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC), the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham (LBHF), and the City of Westminster (WCC) – working with schools, pupils, the workforce and the community.

Through an agreed shared-services model, it is a centralised Local Authority service that receives core funding from the Department for Education via Arts Council England, delivering an extensive programme of musical learning in and out of school.

Stuart Whatmore arrived in August 2014, and pays tribute to his predecessor Jean Carter, who had previously been head of the music service for RBKC, for ‘doing all the hard work of setting it up’ and bringing together organisations and individuals from the three boroughs that had previously worked in a very different way. The hub is now based not in a municipal office but at at the Lyric Theatre, Hammersmith, where the everyday activities of a music service take place in the context of a producing theatre and its associated public spaces. This has its challenges, Whatmore admits, but it also has an inspirational effect.

‘Our over-arching brief is to ensure that every child in state education is offered meaningful highquality musical experiences. We do this by working directly with schools in a range of ways. Everything we do aims to be Inclusive, Exceptional, Inspiring, Progressive, and Sustainable. In our area there are approximately 57,000 children aged five-18 in 166 school settings over 200 square miles. Each year Continued overleaf È

we work with 90% of all those schools, as well as leading some innovative work with the early years, and with 16-25-year-olds in SEND settings.

‘We are also doing some really important work with “virtual schools” for children in the care system, helping to ensure that they receive the same musical experiences as everyone else. Today, for example, we are supporting an Open Doors session for carers here at the Lyric, offering them the chance to experience some of the activities that are available for the children they look after.’

Last year the LBHF left the existing threeborough local authority partnership, but music is one of a handful of services that continue to work across all three boroughs. ‘This is a solid reflection of the outstanding work it has delivered over the past six years and the high regard in which it is held,’ Whatmore says.

He sees the role of hubs as joining the dots between different music education providers, and believes that their real success has been partnership working. ‘Schools trust us, so that if we say an organisation is one of our partners they know its standards will be high. We don’t take on any shortterm partnerships – everything has to be really thoroughly planned in order to be successful.

While the hub’s key strategic and delivery partners are the RAH and the RCM (through its Sparks learning and participation programme), it also works closely with a long list of other arts organisations, including Chickenshed Theatre Company, the BBC Proms, Opera Holland Park,

rock and pop music academy The Rhythm Studio, which supports the hub’s very successful Battle of the Bands.

Brexit Big Band Matthew Herbert talks to Clare Stevens about his new album, due for release on 29 March and consisting of reflections on the nature of home, identity and what it means to welcome and be welcomed

As this article was in preparation at the beginning of February, it was impossible to predict what is actually going to happen in relation to the UK’s membership of the EU on 29 March – would we leave with No-Deal, would a plan B or C suddenly be accepted by parliament, would the implementation of Article 50 be deferred or would it be revoked altogether in favour of a second referendum? But one thing is certain, according to composer and performer Matthew Herbert: 29 March will definitely see the launch of The State Between Us, an album by the Brexit Big Band which is the result of a two-year musical collaboration inspired by the Brexit process.

In contrast to the political negotiations, Herbert’s project has developed smoothly and to schedule. The idea of a musical response to Brexit, celebrating artistic collaboration and communities across national borders, came to him immediately after the 2016 referendum. It began in England when the UK government triggered Article 50 on 29 March 2017 and has consisted of concerts, recording sessions and workshops across Europe by the Brexit Big Band and Choir, directed by Herbert himself, big band conductor Pete Wraight and choral conductor Esmeralda Conde Ruiz. At each show the personnel changes, to include local amateur and professional choirs and instrumentalists who perform alongside the band’s regular lead players.

The State Between Us features over 1000 musicians from Britain and the continent, and its release at the moment that the UK is scheduled to leave the EU will be the culmination of the project.

‘One of the things we weren’t anticipating was quite what a mess Brexit would be and how quickly it’s changing,’ Herbert says, ‘so in fact we formed our own journey and our own perspective on it. But it was always going to take us two years to complete our collaborations and recordings anyway, so at least we’ll be sticking to the timetable, even if nobody else will!’

Herbert has an eccentric musical CV that includes scoring ten feature films, writing, producing, DJ-ing and performing in genres ranging from House, hip hop and protest pop to musique concrète, with collaborators including the playwright Caryl Churchill and chef Heston Blumenthal. He founded his own record company, Accidental, in 2000, and works predominantly with electronic music, describing himself as ‘known for ignoring the boundaries and mangling the conventions traditionally associated with the genre’.

The dominant theme of a previous Matthew Herbert Big Band Album, There’s Me and There’s You, released in 2008, was power and its abuses in the 21st century. It combined de luxe avantjazz arrangements with polemical lyrics and artfully selected noises, including some specially orchestrated sounds from significant sites such as the British Museum and the Houses of Parliament.

The State Between Us by the Matthew Herbert Great Britain and Gibraltar European Union Membership Referendum Big Band (to give it its full title) works in a similar way. Its 16 tracks reflect a journey on foot across Great Britain (and beyond) imagined in beautifully elegiac melodies carefully woven with site-specific recordings. A walk along the Northern Irish border produces a track called ‘Backstop (Newry to Strabane)’. World War II planes in flight rub against a Ford Fiesta being broken down into its component parts; the loneliness of a cross-channel swimmer follows a single cyclist riding around Chequers. Here, the evocative sounds of empty harbours, and factories being demolished, of ancient trees and the calls of soon to be extinct animals ebb and flow through music that poses one hugely significant question – Where’s Home? – and leaves the listener with one resoundingly hopeful answer: You’re Welcome Here.

Asked how closely his ensemble resembles what people would think of as a traditional Big Band, Herbert responds that ‘it’s probably pretty far away now. We’ve done a cover for the first time on this record, of Moonlight Serenade, but even that has been slowed down and messed with. I’m interested in pushing the form in many directions at once to try and find new ways of organising that familiar line up of musicians – crucially though, trying not to lose the thing that makes it special in the first place. At its heart though it is still five saxes, four trombones, four trumpets and a rhythm section.

‘It’s been the biggest collaboration I’ve ever done. It feels like in order to create something that rejects the divisions of Brexit, we had to demonstrate the principles by which we can and should live and work together: kindness, tolerance, love, pleasure, creativity and openness.

It’s extremely worrying that these values are under threat at the moment.

‘I’m not a leaver or remainer any more,’ he adds.

‘I’ve moved on. I suspect many people are the same – Brexit has been a huge, expensive distraction from the real problems in our society, in particular the emergency of climate change.’

ISM Annual Review Deborah Annetts outlines the ISM’s activities for the year ended 31 August 2018

The Incorporated Society of Musicians (‘ISM’) is the UK’s professional body for musicians, established in 1882 to promote the art of music and to protect and support the interests of musicians and the music profession. This founding vision continues to serve the Society well.

The ISM continues to grow and develop in all areas and over the course of the past financial year organisational change has continued on all fronts.

The Incorporated Society of Musicians Trust (ISM Trust, a charitable company limited by guarantee), of which the ism is the sole member, The Benevolent Fund of The Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM Members Fund, a charitable trust) and the ISM continue to work closely together and operate under the name ‘the ISM Group’. Closer working between all teams across all parts of the ISM has been a key focus of 2017-2018 to ensure that we continue to deliver the most relevant services to the ISM members while at the same time initiating and maintaining activities to protect and support the interests of the music profession.

The All-Party Parliamentary Group for Music Education continued to operate in 2017-2018 informing MPs and peers on music education issues.

Key achievements for the year were as follows: •

Support the music profession through a range of advocacy initiatives The External Affairs team worked to influence many different policy areas which are vital to ISM members and the music profession over the course • of the year. The External Affairs team engaged with civil servants and Government Ministers at the Department for Exiting the European Union, the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and the Department for Education; the Intellectual Property Office; the BBC and Arts Council England. The team also met with a broad range of stakeholders including PRS for Music, PPL, Making Music, Ofsted, music colleges, music education hubs, schools, unions and professional associations, members of the AllParty Parliamentary Group for Music Education and other Groups and individual parliamentarians

Education

The ISM continued to lobby extensively in support of music education both in the classroom and across music education hubs and beyond. The Bacc for the Future campaign continued to play a key role, bringing together evidence as to the state of music education in the maintained sector and sharing this with key advocates in Parliament. In particular the ISM gave oral evidence to the House of Lords Communications Select Committee on the value of STEM and arts education and the balance within the curriculum. We coordinated a significant letter for The Times on the continued decline in the uptake of GCSE music which generated over 90 signatories including Sir Simon Rattle, Antonio Pappano, Tasmin Little, Julian Lloyd Webber, Nicola Benedetti, Alison Balsom and many more from across the music world. The team also gave several high profile speeches including at Westminster Education Forum and at the Great Escape Festival 2018.

Brexit

The External Affairs team engaged with civil servants and government ministers at the Department for Exiting the European Union, the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Department for Digital Culture, Media and Sport and lobbied extensively for the right of musicians to travel freely across the EU post-Brexit. In particular the ISM advocated for a multi-entry two-year visa. Alongside this advocacy work the ISM published a third report – entitled Musicians and Brexit – investigating the effects of Brexit on musicians. The report, launched at Central Hall Westminster, gained wide coverage in, and has been referred to,

several times in Parliament. FreeMoveCreate – the campaign to protect flexible travel postBrexit in partnership with a-n The Artists Information Company – has been referenced numerous times in Parliament including during a debate on the EU withdrawal bill in the House of Lords.

Dignity at work

In the wake of revelations regarding inappropriate behaviour in many different settings, the ISM undertook research into sexual harassment, bullying and discrimination in the music sector. The report Dignity at work was published in April 2018. At the request of respondents, follow-up research was undertaken in partnership with the Musicians’ Union and Equity culminating in the report Dignity in study. In order to assist with the eradication of discriminatory behaviour in the music sector, the ISM and Musicians’ Union published the ISM-MU Code of Practice – the first joint agreement between the ISM and MU for many years.

The ISM featured in news stories and comment pieces across a broad range of media platforms in 2017-2018, including BBC Radio, national broadsheets and sector/industry press. The role of social media in the ISM’s advocacy work remained strong with increasing engagement across ISM social media platforms.

Deliver gold standard services to ISM members The ISM continued to offer a full range of support and services to its members over the course of the year. These services included legal support and representation, professional insurances, a wide range of resources linked to key issues facing musicians, opportunities for networking and promotion and a variety of events.

Our unparalleled legal services to musicians were delivered via our in-house legal team of experts, an external media law solicitor, the 24-hour legal helpline, and via our legal expenses insurance.

Heavy demand for the legal advice and support we give to musicians continued. During the financial

year our in-house legal team opened 973 new cases and enquiries in addition to cases carried forward, covering the full range of issues facing working musicians of all kinds – performers, composers, educators. Many were complex matters involving the status of music teachers, a large number of whom we represented in person during the year.

Our 24 hour external legal and tax helpline, provided by Law Express, handled 726 enquiries – an increase on the previous year’s 602 enquiries.

New discounts for ISM members were secured over the year increasing the range of discounts on professional and consumer services and products. The popularity of the ISM Music Directory continued with 1,000 members of the public viewing profiles each month. This member benefit continues to be a useful tool for members to promote themselves to members of the public looking to hire musicians and find music teachers.

The ISM was invited to give talks and presentations at a number of universities, conservatoires and other events throughout the year. Topics covered included the work of the ISM, legal matters and wider issues affecting musicians and the music industry. We also continued to improve the user experience on our website which attracted 20% more members to the members’ area in 2017-2018 compared to the previous year. We also achieved milestones on social media: 14,000 followers on Twitter, 1,000 followers on Instagram, 6,000 ‘likes’ on Facebook and 3,500 followers on LinkedIn. To extend our communications further, we launched the ISM Podcast in February 2018, covering topics such as music education, Brexit and mental health for musicians.

Events and partnerships The ISM held its Members’ Day on 26 April 2018 at LSO St Luke’s in London. The day was planned using the same structure which has proved so successful in previous years. Over 100 people attended the day which showcased high profile musicians from across the profession. The day featured Scotland’s ground-breaking composer James MacMillan in conversation with researcher and presenter Katy Hamilton, and a celebration of musical theatre with BAFTA award-winning maestro and composer Jeremy Sams. Following our AGM and Open Forum, Professor David Saint took over as President for 2018-2019. Kathryn McDowell was awarded the Distinguished Musician Award 2017.

Across the country ISM members volunteer their time to run the ISM Local Group network.

During the 2017-2018 year a total of 19 events were held by 20 ISM Local Groups. These events were a mix of social events and offered opportunities for members to hold concerts as well as share learning and best practice.

ISM Trust Annual Review Deborah Annetts summarises the ISM Trust’s activities for the year ended 31 August 2018

The ISM Trust, the Incorporated Society of Musicians’ (ISM) sister charity, was created in 2014 to advance education, the arts and to promote health. The Trust is dedicated to creating pioneering resources to support music and all those who work in the sector including music educators, performers, and composers. These resources include webinars, regional seminars, training events and advice packs.

In 2015, the ISM Trust became the sole corporate trustee of the Benevolent Fund of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (ISM Members Fund, a charitable trust). The three organisations, namely the ISM, the ISM Trust and the ISM Members Fund, work closely together and are operating under the name ‘the ISM Group’.

The ISM Trust’s activities in 2017-18 The Trust expanded its highly popular professional development programme during the course of the year.

A total of 15 free webinars were delivered covering areas such as performance anxiety, tuition fees, GDPR, hearing health, recorded music royalties, digital royalties and sexual discrimination. We also introduced evening webcasts to our professional development offering, providing re-runs of webinars for musicians who are busy during the day.

In January 2018, the Trust launched Play: A psychological toolkit for optimal music performance.

Received with great acclaim, it is a hands-on guide to help musicians manage performance anxiety and draws on significant psychological and philosophical research from its two authors, Gregory and Dr Alison Daubney, both experts in the field of performance psychology. The eBook saw 281 downloads sold and 108 printed copies sold from launch to 31 August 2018.

Resources produced over the past few years continue to be valued with the National Curriculum assessment and progression frameworks now being downloaded over 1,800 times since they launched in September 2015. Other notable figures include the ISM Teachers Pack which has been downloaded over 2,000 times and Performance anxiety: A practical guide for music teachers at nearly 2,500.

Throughout the year, workshops and seminars were held on a variety of topics including assessing music in primary school, performance anxiety and mindfulness. Presented by music education specialist Dr Alison Daubney on behalf of the Trust, training was delivered to Essex Music Hub, Leicestershire Music Service, Bath and North East Somerset Hub, South Gloucestershire Hub, undergraduates at the Royal Northern College of Music, Kent Music and ISM members.

Approximately 430 musicians engaged with our professional development webinars and events delivered by the ISM Trust in 2017-2018. The recorded webinars have also received 5,000 views online since the live broadcasts.

GCSE certificates Working with the ISM, the ISM Trust carried out research into the uptake of GCSE music in secondary schools of all types (independent, academy, free school, maintained etc) in January 2018 across the UK. Schools which had a high uptake were awarded certificates to recognise their work and to support the continued provision of music within their school. As well as building relationships with schools across the country, relationships were forged with local press and MPs, who both promoted the certificates in print and on social media. On the week of release, #ISMMusicCert was the most tweeted post by MPs for that week.

Compliance The ISM Trust is registered as a data controller in its own right at the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO). In 2017-18 the Trust undertook extensive preparations to ensure compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (‘GDPR’). All ISM staff working on Trust activities are bound by the provisions of the Data Governance Policy introduced across all ISM Group companies. Trustees of the ISM Trust are also bound by this policy.

Financial review In order to support the work of the ISM Trust going forward, the ISM has provided £110,000 (2017: £110,000) by way of donations. During the reporting period, total income fell by 2.0% over the previous year to £120,818. Within this overall figure income of £8,627 (2017: £8,781) has been generated as a result of professional development work. The total direct and support costs in respect of the professional development work was £90,753 (2017: £77,721) an increase of 16.8% over the previous year. This was due to the launch of our new resource Play: A psychological toolkit for optimal music performance which has been a huge success. The ISM Trust yielded a surplus of £30,064 for the financial year and as at 31 August 2018 had £120,260 (2017: £90,196) of unrestricted reserves to carry forward.

ISM Members Fund Annual Review Deborah Annetts summarises the ISM Members Fund’s activities for the year ended 31 August 2018.

The ISM Members Fund is the working name of the Benevolent Fund of the Incorporated Society of Musicians, registered charity no. 206801.

The Fund’s objective at the start of the financial year was the relief of necessitous members of the Incorporated Society of Musicians (‘ISM’), former members and widows and widowers or other dependants of deceased members. In December 2017 the Charity Commission agreed to the Fund’s request to add the objects of the advancement of health and the prevention of poverty.

The Fund’s work in 2017-18 During the year, the Fund offered assistance to relieve a wide range of issues relating to poverty.

The Fund spent £58,545 (2017: £80,747) on grants to individuals. In total, 31 individuals (2017: 51) received assistance. In addition, there were times when applicants to the Fund were signposted to other sources of help, such as medical support, debt advice, welfare benefits and other charities.

Dr Robert Howard (MISM) Advent was a busy time for composer Dr Robert Howard, featuring premieres and multiple performances of his festive choral works. On 4 December Robert accompanied his wife in a performance of two of his Christmas carols. The first was the premiere of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’, in its flexible version; the second was ‘A Babe Is Born’. This was part of South Liverpool Orchestra’s Christmas Concert at St James United Reformed & Methodist Church in Woolton, Merseyside.

The full choral version of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ was premiered by Prescot Parish Church Choir, with the composer at the piano, on 6 December. The performance was a highlight of the Mayor of Prescot’s Charity Christmas concert, which also featured a brass quintet and several community and school choirs. The event raised over £1000 for local charities including nearby Whiston Hospital.

RWCMD Guildhall School of Music & Drama Designs released for new Centre for Music In January the Barbican, London Symphony Orchestra and Guildhall School of Music & Drama released the first concept designs for our project to create a world-class Centre for Music in London. The proposed Centre’s design would provide Guildhall School with an ideal environment to experiment, explore and play across all disciplines.

Guildhall intends to create an Institute for Social Impact that will evaluate the impact and effectiveness of performance, outreach and education programmes and enable a virtuous circle of best practice within the Centre. Sharing this new building will enable increased cross genre and cross discipline working with the Barbican and LSO, offering more opportunities to a greater range of Guildhall students, and the School’s outreach and under-18s work would be extended through the innovative use of digital technology.

New Hodge Foundation International Chair appointments The Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama (RWCMD) is delighted to announce the appointment of Jeremy West as Hodge International Chair in Historical Performance, and Gilad Hekselman as International Chair in Jazz.

Jeremy and Gilad will join Uzo Iwobi, who was announced as RWCMD’s First International Chair of Diversity last year, and Tim Routledge as its new International Chair in Stage Management.

Central is delighted to announce that it has been awarded a grant of £414,620 from the Leverhulme Trust in support of student scholarships and further support for its internationally recognised work in Applied Theatre.

The generous award has doubled the amount of funding that Central has previously received from the Leverhulme Trust. The funding forms part of Leverhulme’s Arts Scholarship programme and will support the student scholarships and the School’s applied theatre work for the period of 2019–21.

EPTA UK New partnerships and the first EPTA Summer School Exciting times for EPTA UK, following our 40th birthday in November – we have extensive plans moving into 2019 now we are middle aged! We have forged partnerships with ESTA and the ABRSM. This year sees the launch of our new initiative EPTA Education.

Six ABRSM/EPTA development days are taking place at Chetham’s School of Music. In addition there will be three free regional events in York at Music Room Banks (31 August), Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (13 October) and Schott Music, London (10 November). Summer sees EPTAs repackaged conference into the very first EPTA summer school which will run alongside the hugely successful ESTA summer school 11-16 August at University of Chichester. Advanced Communication Solutions Play Safe Now – Hear Tomorrow: are our children listening safely?

The mission to raise awareness of hearing conservation in music making, especially in education, took a leap forward in the lead up to World Hearing Day (3 March). All too often in music education the subject of hearing health does not seem to be given the attention it deserves. ACS, the world leaders in hearing protection in the music industry, launched a survey on this issue, aimed at parents and asking the question – do you know your child’s safe exposure time when listening to loud music and how can they suitably protect themselves? The survey achieved great media attention together with interviews from Musicians’ Hearing Services and unfortunate young people who had already damaged their hearing from music.

Making Music ‘Making Music Together’ Barbican exhibition Making Music is proud to present ‘Making Music Together’, an exhibition running until 23 March 2019 at the Barbican Music Library. The exhibition celebrates the scale and breadth of the leisure-time music scene, its positive impact on the hundreds of thousands of players and singers who take part in making music with others, and the invaluable contribution of music professionals in making this happen.

From all corners of the UK, Making Music member groups have sent us their posters, audio and video recordings, quotes and stories. We’ve gathered these together with key stats about the professional conductors,accompanists, players and other professionals involved to reflect the sheer variety of the leisure-time music scene.

A series of photographic portraits of individual leisure-time musicians in their daytime role, juxtaposed with their musical activity shows that involvement in music is for everyone, whatever their background.

The day offers a rare opportunity to participate in and observe two workshops and a masterclass with leading piano teachers Vera Kameneva (Russia), Tania Kozlova (Israel) and Irina Gorin (USA).

Vera Kameneva (Director of the Innovative School of Performing Arts, Moscow and former Deputy Director of the Central Music School for Gifted Children at the Moscow Conservatory Laureate of International Competitions) will be running a workshop, which teaches exercises to help alleviate and prevent tension and to improve sound control.

Portsmouth Music Hub Partnerships In Portsmouth We all remember stories from childhood. Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and The Hare and Tortoise are just some of the tales that stay in our memories forever, and recently hundreds of children from Portsmouth brought these fairy tales to life.

Each year the team at Portsmouth Music Hub works in partnership with headteachers of local infant schools to produce the Infant Voices Festival. The theme of each festival is drawn from one of the Music Hub’s award-winning series of songbooks, and this year the children performed songs from Story-Scape. Over the course of a week children learn 16 songs in a variety of musical styles before taking to the stage at a major venue in Portsmouth.

Sue Beckett, CEO of Portsmouth Music Hub, said: ‘The Infant Voices Festival plays an important part in our vocal strategy; giving every child the opportunity to sing and to go on developing a lifelong passion for music. Rocksteady Rocksteady launches Young Carers Initiative Just before Christmas, Rocksteady Music School took part in the Radio 1 ‘Ultimate Christmas Party’ for young carers organised by the Greg James Breakfast Show. In support of Be Free Young Carers in South Oxfordshire, one hundred young carers aged between eight and eighteen had a chance to attend the party and just be kids, have some fun and a much-needed break.

Glasgow New ABRSM Piano Syllabus

2.30pm, Shirley House, 31 Psalter Lane, Sheffield S11 8YL The ISM Sheffield local group is holding a concert this spring for pupils of all ages.

It is non-competitive, and a wonderful opportunity for pupils to become more at ease with performance. All instruments and grades are welcome and with a varied repertoire, including solos, duets and ensembles. Each participant receives an ISM Certificate of Appreciation to add to their Record of Achievement. Refreshments will be provided after the concert.

Please provide your own accompanist if you require one. The venue will be open from 1.30pm for a short rehearsal if required. The piano is a well-maintained grand which is raised on an A-frame.

If you would like any of your pupils to take part in the concert, please RSVP to Pearl Woodward by Monday 4 March.

Cost: There is a small entry charge for guests of £2 per adult and 50p per child to cover our costs. Free entry for performers and ISM members.

play with four groups: three originals and one function. I co-founded a classical/pop wedding duo, The Moonrise Collective, with pianist and violinist Jessica Rochman.

Last year I was asked to tour France and record strings on the album for Buriers (I coin it minimalist post-rock political rap).

We got on so well that I ended up joining them permanently! Later that year I also teamed up with poet and punk singer Jonny ‘Itch’ Fox, frontman for The King Blues, to record strings for their new album and joined the band on their journey of 14 years. The final project, Ode to Lucius, is in the development stage but we have some exciting plans for 2019. Ode to Lucius is a trio of multi-instrumentalists mixing dream pop with violin, clarinets and heavier rock with a hint of punk. Our first project (supported by Polaroid, Red Bull Music and Help Musicians UK) is going to be a multi-arts performance combining music, photography, projections and multipleinstrument swapping feats of flexibility.

Even though I studied classical violin and love the sound of that world, I have always been drawn to the alternative rock sound. All the tiny punk gigs I went to in Reading definitely helped shape my music; thankfully I’ve found people who share my taste! A special shout out goes to Amy Kelly, drummer of Ode to Lucius/ex-drummer of The Jaw – the drum to my bass. She really helped to guide me professionally and personally, navigating some tough times.

Bandmates are for life, not just for Christmas.

I started playing the violin aged seven after seeing my neighbours play violin in a school assembly. After that day I went home and asserted ‘I want to play the violin!’ but I think really, I just wanted to be on stage! Now I am in love with playing the violin – the sound and versatility of the instrument is unrivalled. I studied the classical ABRSM grades and picked up bass guitar aged 14 because my best friend played in a band. It was the coolest thing What would you say is your greatest I’d ever seen. This led me to attend the achievement to date?

Academy of Contemporary Music and I later graduated from City University, London.

This is really hard to answer! I love being at festivals and so playing them is an honour.

The many musicians of The Cinematic Orchestra because their artistry and soul are relayed so effortlessly live and in recordings. Hats off to Jason Swinscoe.

The EP Drugstore Heaven by Houses.

An electronic duo that combine killer lyrics with super chilled hooks, I have it on repeat.

What are your plans for the future?

I am a member of the Songwriting Academy and I am very close to the end of my year-long mentorship. My plan is to carry on writing, collaborating and recording to hopefully get some placements in either sync or be placed with an artist. Oh, and touring two albums with my lovely collection of bands!

Finally, what is your ISM membership to you?

My ISM membership means security and community. I am pleased to be aligned with such a professional body that I can call on in need of help. Thankfully it’s only happened a few times and it’s not been such a tricky situation.
