Valentin Fuster, MD, PhD, es médico, investigador y educador, cuya carrera e investigación de casi cinco décadas sobre las causas, la prevención y el tratamiento de las enfermedades cardiovasculares, ha transformado la atención de los pacientes con enfermedades cardíacas en todo el mundo. Como presidente de Mount Sinai Heart y médico jefe del Mount Sinai Hospital, también es director general del Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Cardiovasculares (CNIC) en Madrid, España.

Después de finalizar sus estudios en la Escuela de Medicina de la Universidad de Barcelona, el Dr. Fuster continuó sus estudios en los EE. UU. y se desempeñó como profesor en Medicina y Enfermedades Cardiovasculares; primero, en la Escuela de Medicina de Mayo Clinic y, luego, en la Escuela de Medicina del Mount Sinai Hospital en 1982. Entre 1991 y 1994, fue profesor de medicina de Mallinckrodt en la Escuela de Medicina de Harvard (Harvard Medical School) y jefe de cardiología en el Massachusetts General Hospital. Regresó a Mount Sinai en 1994 cuando fue nombrado director del Instituto Cardiovascular (Cardiovascular Institute) de Mount Sinai, cargo que ha combinado con el de médico jefe del hospital desde 2012.

El Dr. Fuster ha trabajado en numerosos puestos de liderazgo en sociedades, academias y asociaciones centradas en la salud cardiovascular en los EE. UU. y en el extranjero, incluido el cargo de presidente de la Asociación Estadounidense del Corazón (American Heart Association) y la Federación Mundial del Corazón (World Heart Federation) , y el de miembro de la Academia Nacional de Medicina (National Academy of Medicine), donde presidió un comité que promueve la salud cardiovascular a nivel mundial. La carrera de investigación del Dr. Fuster, en la cual explora las causas, la prevención y el tratamiento de las enfermedades cardiovasculares en todo el mundo, ha abarcado desde la ciencia básica y la biología molecular hasta los estudios clínicos y ensayos multinacionales a gran escala, las ciencias de la población y los estudios de medicina global, con un índice h de 218 de impacto. Es uno de los científicos de investigación estadounidenses y españoles más impactante y grandemente citado de todos los tiempos y ha recibido 35 títulos honoríficos.

Galardonado con numerosos premios y distinciones internacionales de prestigio, el Dr. Fuster es el único cardiólogo que ha recibido los máximos galardones a la investigación de las cuatro principales organizaciones cardiovasculares: la Asociación Estadounidense del Corazón (medalla de oro y Premio al Logro de Investigación), el Universidad Estadounidense de Cardiología (Premio a la Leyenda Viviente y Logro de Vida), la Sociedad Europea de Cardiología (European Society of Cardiology) (medalla de oro) y la Sociedad Interamericana de Cardiología (lnteramerican Society of Cardiology) (Premio al Logro de Investigación). Recientemente, recibió el Premio Príncipe Mahidol 2020 por su contribución para toda la vida en el campo de la medicina y, en 2022, la Universidad Estadounidense de Cardiología instituyó el Premio Valentin Fuster en Ciencia e Innovación. En 2014, el Rey Juan Carlos I de España le otorgó el título de marqués por su “destacada e incesante obra investigadora y labor de divulgación educativa”.

Las innumerables contribuciones científicas, clínicas y educativas del Dr. Fuster en todo el mundo han transformado el campo de la salud cardiovascular y han moldeado la salud de incontables pacientes a lo largo de su carrera de casi cinco décadas. En 2022, el presidente Joseph R. Biden designó al Dr. Ashish Jha para el puesto de coordinador de la respuesta a la COVID-19. Es reconocido a nivel mundial como médico practicante y experto de confianza en preparación y respuesta ante pandemias, así como en política de salud nacional y global. Ha llevado a cabo investigaciones pioneras en torno a la COVID-19 y el virus del ébola, liderando el análisis nacional e internacional de problemas clave y asesorando a legisladores estatales y federales durante toda la pandemia.

Antes de su nombramiento para este cargo, el Dr. Jha se desempeñó como decano de la Escuela de Salud Pública de la Universidad Brown (Brown University). Se incorporó en 2020, después de dirigir el Instituto de Salud Global de Harvard (Harvard Global Health Institute) y enseñar en la Escuela de Salud Pública T.H. Chan de Harvard y en la Escuela de Medicina de Harvard.

Aunque recientemente su investigación se ha centrado de manera intensa en políticas sanitarias globales para abordar los desafíos de la pandemia de COVID-19, el enfoque del Dr. Jha se ha dirigido principalmente al impacto de las políticas de salud en los resultados de salud y en el gasto en atención médica, tanto a nivel nacional como mundial. Dedicó gran parte de su carrera de investigación a estudiar iniciativas políticas nacionales y globales para mejorar la calidad y la eficacia de la atención, que incluyen trabajos en medidas para el desempeño, la transparencia, los incentivos y el uso de la tecnología para mejorar la salud de la población. Ha ejercido durante casi dos décadas en hospitales de asuntos de veteranos de guerra brindando atención clínica directa a excombatientes.

Nacido en Pursaulia, Bihar, India, Jha se mudó a Toronto, Canadá, en 1979, y a los Estados Unidos en 1983. Se graduó magna cum laude en Economía en la Universidad de Columbia y obtuvo el título médico en la Escuela de Medicina de Harvard y una maestría en salud pública en la Escuela de Salud Pública de Harvard.

El Dr. Jha ha publicado más de 250 artículos de investigación originales en importantes revistas de política médica y de salud y colabora frecuentemente en diversos medios de comunicación públicos. Trabaja para varios consejos editoriales de revistas médicas académicas revisadas por pares y ha sido miembro de la Academia Nacional de Medicina desde 2013. También forma parte de una serie de consejos organizativos y comités asesores relacionados con los derechos humanos y la salud pública y mundial. El profesor U ğ ur Ş ahin, MD, cofundador y director ejecutivo de BioNTech, es médico calificado, profesor de Oncología e Inmunología Traslacionales en la Universidad de Mainz y profesor de Helmholtz dedicado a la inmunoterapia con ARNm. También es investigador académico y empresario.

Al trabajar con su cónyuge, la profesora Özlem Türeci, MD, cofundadora y directora médica de BioNTech, desde finales de 1990, Ş ahin ha logrado una serie de avances fundamentales en el campo de las vacunas de ARNm. Su trabajo, incluida la creación del primer fármaco con ARNm, ha tenido un impacto transformador en la medicina. Mejoraron considerablemente la traducción del ARNm al ocuparse del desafío de toda la vida sobre la baja estabilidad y potencia del ARNm. Descubrieron e hicieron uso de los mecanismos de captación específicos de ARNm por parte de las células inmunes para potenciar la eficacia de la vacuna, lo que dio lugar a los primeros ensayos en seres humanos de vacunas de ARNm nanoparticuladas y al desarrollo de vacunas altamente potentes para uso humano. Su trabajo pionero sobre las vacunas de ARNm con neoantígenos sentó las bases para las vacunas contra el cáncer personalizadas y permitió terapias adaptadas al perfil de mutación del cáncer diferenciado de cada paciente.

Bajo el liderazgo del profesor Ş ahin como director ejecutivo, BioNTech ha logrado éxitos notables, especialmente el desarrollo de BNT162b2 (la vacuna contra la COVID-19 de Pfizer-BioNTech), el primer producto de ARNm aprobado en la historia, distribuido en todo el mundo, que ha sido fundamental para combatir la pandemia de COVID-19.

El profesor Ş ahin se desempeña como profesor de Oncología e Inmunología Traslacionales en la Universidad Johannes Gutenberg de Mainz, Alemania, donde guio a más de 50 estudiantes de doctorado durante su carrera, y continúa comprometido con la capacitación de la próxima generación de científicos. Además, es presidente del Consejo de Administración Científica del Instituto Helmholtz de Oncología Traslacional (Helmholtz Institute for Translational Oncology, HI-TRON). Antes de BioNTech, también cofundó Ganymed Pharmaceuticals, actualmente filial de Astellas Pharma, con la profesora Türeci y el inmunólogo Dr. Christoph Huber en 2001, que se centró en una nueva clase de fármacos contra el cáncer llamados anticuerpos monoclonales ideales y, posteriormente, como parte de Astellas Pharma, desarrolló el anticuerpo zolbetuximab para tratar el cáncer de la unión gastroesofágica.

Hijo de inmigrantes turcos en Alemania, el profesor Ş ahin estudió medicina en la Universidad de Colonia, donde obtuvo su doctorado en 1992 con una tesis sobre la inmunoterapia contra las células tumorales. Posteriormente, estudió matemáticas en la Fernuniversität Hagen y trabajó como médico de medicina interna y hematología/ oncología en el Hospital Universitario de Colonia y el Hospital Universitario de Sarre. En 2000, se incorporó al Centro Médico Universitario (University Medical Center) de Mainz. Contribuyó a más de 950 patentes internacionales y ha recibido incontables premios, títulos honoríficos y reconocimientos de prestigio por su trabajo.

El profesor U ğ ur Ş ahin es ingeniero pionero en inmunología que busca maneras de aprovechar la propia capacidad del organismo para encontrar y combatir enfermedades cuando el sistema inmunológico no es capaz de hacerlo. Esta visión y enfoque cambiaron la trayectoria de una pandemia global y continuarán transformando la salud de innumerables personas en todo el mundo.

La profesora Özlem Türeci, MD, cofundadora y directora médica de BioNTech, es médica calificada, investigadora académica y empresaria. Sus primeros trabajos contribuyeron a la identificación de antígenos tumorales humanos, al desarrollo de terapias con anticuerpos monoclonales contra objetivos nuevos y a la creación de inmunoterapias personalizadas contra el cáncer en fase clínica basadas en mutaciones no sinónimas identificadas mediante la secuenciación de las nuevas generaciones. Sus contribuciones al campo de la vacuna de ARNm incluyen trabajos preliminares científicos, descubrimientos, desarrollo tecnológico, investigación traslacional y clínica, y el desarrollo y la aprobación reglamentaria del primer fármaco de ARNm. Ella y su pareja, el profesor U ğ ur Ş ahin, MD, superaron el desafío de una potencia deficiente de ARNm mediante optimizaciones independientes de elementos estructurales en el andamio de ARNm y vacunas pioneras de ARNm nanoparticuladas, lo que mejoró la potencia y posibilitó el uso humano con éxito.

Nacida en Siegen, Alemania, la profesora Türeci es hija de un cirujano y biólogo que emigró a Alemania desde Türkiye. Estudió medicina en la Universidad de Sarre en Homburg, recibió su doctorado en la Facultad de Medicina de Saarland en 1992 y fue becaria del programa Heisenberg de la fundación alemana de investigación German Research Foundation, donde sus investigaciones se centraron principalmente en la identificación y caracterización de moléculas específicas del tumor y en el desarrollo de inmunoterapias contra el cáncer. En 2002, completó su título de habilitación en medicina molecular en el Centro Médico Universitario de la Universidad Johannes Gutenberg en Mainz. Durante su último año de estudios, Türeci conoció a su futura pareja, el profesor Ş ahin, que trabajaba en el Hospital Universitario de Sarre en Homburg, con quien compartió el interés científico de aprovechar el sistema inmunológico del organismo para combatir el cáncer.

Antes de convertirse en miembro cofundador de BioNTech, la profesora Türeci ocupó anteriormente el cargo de directora ejecutiva y directora médica de Ganymed Pharmaceuticals, actualmente filial de Astellas Pharma, que cofundó con el profesor Ş ahin y su mentor, el inmunólogo Dr. Christoph Huber en 2001. Ganymed se centró en una nueva clase de fármacos contra el cáncer llamados anticuerpos monoclonales ideales y desarrolló un fármaco para tratar el cáncer de la unión gastroesofágica. Fue directora científica entre 2001 y 2008 y, posteriormente, directora ejecutiva entre 2008 y 2016. La profesora Türeci se desempeña también como profesora de lnmunoterapia

Galardonada con numerosos y destacados premios, títulos honoríficos y reconocimientos, incluido el Premio a la Sustentabilidad de Alemania, la profesora Türeci y su pareja, el profesor U ğ ur Ş ahin, fueron nombrados personajes del año en 2020 en el Financial Times por producir una vacuna segura y eficaz contra la COVID-19 menos de un año después de que se publicara la secuencia genética del virus, un logro citado como “uno de los mayores avances médicos de nuestro tiempo”.

La profesora Özlem Türeci ha profundizado nuestra comprensión de la inmunología humana y ha desarrollado terapias eficaces que han cambiado el curso de la salud global y han extendido la vida de las personas de todo el mundo que sufren de enfermedades infecciosas, cáncer y enfermedades de los sistemas inmunológico y nervioso.

The caps and gowns worn by the participants in today’s Commencement exercises are patterned after the attire of scholars in the Middle Ages, when a warm gown and hood were needed for study in unheated buildings. While European institutions continue to show great diversity in their academic costume, an Intercollegiate Commission met in 1895 to standardize the style and color for robes and hoods to be worn at colleges and universities of the United States. Since then the costume code has been revised and clarified several times by the American Council on Education, most recently in 1986. The governing force, however, is tradition tracing back to the academic symbols of the Middle Ages.

Black gowns were originally recommended for all degrees at all institutions, with the style of the gown denoting the degree: pointed sleeves for Bachelor’s, long closed sleeves for Master’s, and full, round sleeves for the Doctor’s degrees. In addition, the Doctor’s gown was to be faced in black velvet down the front and with three bars of the same velvet across the sleeves. Some universities have begun to adopt more colorful robes. The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai robe is blue; other colors currently in use are violet for New York University, slate gray for Columbia, crimson for Harvard, blue for Yale.

Much information is represented by the colors of hoods worn by holders of doctoral and master’s degrees. The colors of the interior lining of the hood are those of the institution from which the degree was earned. The hood is bordered in velvet in a color that signifies the discipline of the degree: In the case of the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree, the dark blue color is used to represent the mastery of the discipline of learning and scholarship in any field and is not intended to solely represent the field of philosophy.

Juro cumplir, con la mayor capacidad y criterio posibles, el siguiente compromiso:

Respetaré los logros científicos ganadas con esfuerzo de aquellos médicos en cuyos pasos camino y con gusto compartiré tal conocimiento como propio con los que han de seguir.

Aplicaré, en beneficio de los enfermos, todas las medidas que sean necesarias y evitaré aquellas trampas gemelas de tratamiento excesivo y nihilismo terapéutico.

Recordaré que tanto la medicina como la ciencia tienen arte y que la calidez, la compasión y la comprensión pueden superar al cuchillo del cirujano o el medicamento del farmacéutico.

No me avergonzaré de decir “no lo sé”, ni dejaré de llamar a mis colegas cuando se necesiten las habilidades de otra persona para la recuperación de un paciente.

Respetaré la privacidad de mis pacientes porque sus problemas no me son revelados para divulgarlos por el mundo. Especialmente, debo tener cuidado con asuntos de vida o muerte. Si me es concedido salvar una vida, que así sea. Pero también puede estar dentro de mi poder deshacerme de una vida. Esta increíble responsabilidad debe ser enfrentada con gran humildad y conciencia de mi propia fragilidad. Por sobre todas las cosas, no debo jugar a ser Dios.

Recordaré que no trato un cuadro de fiebre, un crecimiento canceroso, sino un ser humano enfermo, cuya enfermedad puede afectar la estabilidad familiar y económica de la persona. Mi responsabilidad incluye estos problemas relacionados si quiero cuidar adecuadamente a los enfermos.

Evitaré enfermedades siempre que pueda, ya que es preferible prevenir que curar.

Me ocuparé de mi propia salud, bienestar y capacidades a fin de brindar atención del más alto nivel.

Recordaré que sigo siendo miembro de la sociedad con obligaciones especiales hacia todos mis prójimos, aquellos sanos de mente y cuerpo, así como los enfermos.
