Over the next four year term I will continue to serve our borough to the best of my abilities and will do everything I can to make the place we all call home a better place to live and work.

As we look to summer, there is only one place to start — Arsenal becoming champions of England. We are so proud of the men’s team for bringing home the Premier League title. In doing so, they have inspired a whole new generation of fans to watch the beautiful game.

As a club rooted in Islington’s identity, their success resonates far beyond the pitch, showcasing the spirit of resilience and excellence that defines our borough. The scenes at the parade showed people coming from near and far with a shared passion for Arsenal, a club that has touched every corner of the globe.

I want to thank everyone who took the time to vote, volunteer, or participate in the recent elections. Democracy is strongest when voices are heard, and Islington has once again demonstrated its commitment to our local democratic system.

Regardless of political views, our shared goal remains the same: to build a fairer, more inclusive borough that delivers for all residents.

We are continuing to deliver for you with our “Making It Happen” campaign. Our focus is on delivering real change: investing in affordable housing, supporting families and strengthening local services. We are working closely with communities, businesses, and partners to turn ideas into action and ensure that promises translate into visible improvements in people’s lives.

We have taken another important step by launching a new £4.1m Crisis and Resilience Fund to support residents facing the ongoing cost-ofliving pressures. This funding will provide vital help to those who need it most, covering essentials such as food, energy and household goods, while also investing in longer-term support like debt advice, employment help and access to affordable credit. We know that even small financial shocks can have a major impact, so this fund is about both immediate support and building resilience for the future.

So, what happens next? Local elections took place in Islington on 7 May. Here’s how it all fits together and what happens next In May, people across Islington headed to the polls. These elections determine who represents local people at the Town Hall and who takes decisions on the services residents rely on every day.

From housing and community safety to cleaner streets and support services, councillors play a key role in setting priorities and directing investment.

Cllr O’Halloran has confirmed her priorities for the next four years — creating a more equal borough by focusing on what matters most to residents.

This includes making streets safer, building more genuinely affordable homes, and helping residents manage everyday costs — through direct financial support, access to benefits, and action to boost incomes.

Safe support for young people Young people aged 11–25 in Islington can access free and anonymous mental health support through Kooth, an online wellbeing platform. Kooth offers one‑to‑one chats with qualified professionals, peer support forums, self-help tools and a space to explore worries at your own pace. No referrals or waiting lists, create an account and get support whenever you need. kooth.com

benefit is automatically included with all resident permits.

Blue Badge holders who need vehicle access through Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) can also apply for an exemption. This allows eligible residents to drive through certain camera-controlled filters where restrictions would normally apply.

Getting around Islington just got easier. Residents with a valid parking permit can now use any resident bay across the borough between 11am and 3pm (except when extended match day controls are in operation) – no matter which zone you live in.

The scheme is designed to make everyday trips simpler, whether you’re popping to the shops or heading to an appointment.

Red and white takes over Islington

Champions at home in Islington Arsenal supporters filled Islington’s streets in a sea of red and white as the borough came together to celebrate the men’s team’s historic Premier League title win

From Upper Street to the Emirates Stadium, the atmosphere across Islington was electric as fans lined the streets to celebrate Arsenal being crowned champions of England for the first time in 22 years.

Families, lifelong supporters and young fans experiencing a title win for the first time gathered together to cheer on the team during a victory parade that turned the borough into one huge celebration.

One young fan, Clodagh O’Driscoll, aged 11 said: “It was the best day of my life.”

shared the moment with the community that has supported them every step of the way.

The parade was a fitting celebration of a remarkable season and a reminder of the close bond between Arsenal and Islington. For generations, the club has been part of the fabric of the borough, with matchdays bringing energy to local streets, businesses and communities.

As lifelong fan Fezi Ghumman remarked: “It felt like everyone was part of it, no matter where you were from, everyone came together, connected and celebrated as one.”

The council worked closely with Arsenal Football Club and partners to help bring the celebrations to life and make the day a success. Leader of Islington Council, Una O’Halloran,

said: “The champions of Islington are the champions of England.

Congratulations, Arsenal!”

The parade followed an unforgettable season for Arsenal fans, with the club already celebrating Arsenal Women’s FIFA Women’s Champions Cup victory earlier this year.

Arsenal’s title-winning season will go down in football history, but for many people in Islington it was the scenes on the streets that made it feel truly special.

Neighbours celebrating together, generations of fans side by side, and a borough united in pride created a day supporters will remember for years to come.

Alex Whitlock, a local resident and Arsenal fan, said: ““It was a great day for fans to come together, celebrate with the team and share in the rewards of such an incredible season.”

For one unforgettable day, Islington was painted red.

Arsenal parade clean up As the crowds dispersed and Arsenal’s first Premier League trophy parade in 22 years came to a close, a dedicated team of council staff and councillors came together to lead one of the largest clean-up operations the borough has ever seen.

They were supported by Arsenal Football Club, who fully funded the clean-up In the early hours of Monday morning, teams from across Islington Council were already out in force, working together to return the borough to its usual clean and welcoming state following the parade.

What followed was one of the largest co-ordinated clean-up operations in Islington’s history – a remarkable response to a remarkable day.

From Upper Street to the Emirates Stadium and beyond, streets that had been filled with hundreds of thousands of supporters were carefully and methodically cleaned.

Bags of litter were collected, roads were swept, and public spaces were restored with great care.

Hundreds of staff from across the council got involved – in sunshine, wind, and pouring rain – to get Islington back to its very best.

One of the many involved in the clean-up was Henry Walters, Street Sweeper Operative.

Reflecting on the clean-up, he said: “There were about 20 of

us within my team but lots of others across the borough, within two hours of the parade ending we were out bagging rubbish, clearing gutters and removing glass and anything dangerous, trying to get everything back to normal as quickly as possible.”

“Seeing the amount of rubbish at the start was a real wow moment, but I’m proud of how determined the team was to just get in and get the job done.”

Arsenal praised the volunteers and council staff as “the best of the best”, and supportive comments flowed on social media as the clean-up took place.

We appreciate you guys.”

While the scale of this operation was exceptional, it also shone a light on the vital work that happens every day across the borough.

Long before most residents begin their day, council staff are out on Islington’s streets, sweeping roads, emptying bins and keeping neighbourhoods clean.

The title parade brought that work into the spotlight, highlighting the people who help keep Islington running smoothly no matter the occasion – making it happen for our incredible borough.

One user praised those involved as the “unsung heroes of the parade”, while another added: “Thank you to everyone involved.

Youth hubs and clubs Islington’s youth hubs and clubs offer a huge range of opportunities for young people aged 13 and up to relax, meet their friends, learn new skills and find their voice. As well as plugging into their communities, they can have fun and receive support from trained, friendly and skilled youth workers. Support through sport Young people who are feeling stressed or low can meet up with social prescribing youth workers, who provide support through arranging creative, social and sporting activities. Activities and youth support This summer, youth workers will be out in the community offering fun activities like football, bowling and go-karting.

They’ll also share advice and support, helping young people discover local opportunities if they’re not ready to visit a youth club.

The targeted youth support team’s new Youth Bus will visit estates, providing a welcoming space for young people to connect on their doorstep throughout the summer across Islington.

Swimming lessons

Bookstart

Throughout the holidays, Better leisure centres offer free swimming lessons for children and young people aged four to 21, families and those aged under four with an adult, all funded by the council. Sessions take place at Archway Leisure Centre, Cally Pool, Highbury Leisure Centre and Ironmonger Row Baths.

Bookstart supports families with children aged 0–5 to enjoy books and develop a love of reading from an early age. Free packs are given at key stages, alongside songs, rhymes and library sessions. Visit your local library to collect packs, join activities and discover how sharing books can boost your child’s development at home or together.

Libraries and Summer Reading Challenge Get ready to Read to the Beat!

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge inspires children to explore the connection between stories and songs, delivered

by The Reading Agency in partnership with Universal Music.

Head to any Islington library on their special Sign-Up Saturday on 4 July, 11am—4pm, with author events, face painting, crafts and storytelling.

Children need to read at least six library books over the summer, collecting stickers and rewards, to complete the challenge and receive a medal and certificate.

Islington libraries are also hosting more than 60 free family activities this summer, including crafts, Bollywood dance, baby bounce and much more! islington.gov.uk/libraries

“The council have done a great job. They listened, made it safer and more accessible. We need spaces where kids can explore.”

Jaehee agrees: “I like that it’s close to my home. My favourite thing is all the different ways you can climb up and down. My birthday was fun — we played tag with the treehouse as home!”

For planner David Baretto Ian, the magic lies in collaboration.

“I work with councillors and residents to shape projects people really want,” he says.

Islington has been rated the best London borough for play by academics at the University of Sheffield - and if you’ve seen the Highbury Quadrant treehouse in action, you’ll understand why

Ella: We’ve got a new outdoor stage, amphitheatre and stage lights so we can do community performances and events, the kids always love doing talent shows. We’ve got a new fire pit, zip wire, slide, sand pit and gym

rings, plus better lighting and paths so it’s it safer and more welcoming year-round. It is incredible!

What makes it so great?

Zoe: My partner came here as a kid, and his parents did, too. It’s a massive part of the community and they are amazing with the kids. They do loads of things and it really brings the community together — it’s so hard to get that now.

Nick Crivello, Centre Manager at Soapbox Youth Hub in Old Street, and young filmmaker Braulio Chimbembe share how Young Islington Digital Creators are helping young people build the skills needed for tomorrow’s creative careers What is Young Islington Digital Creators all about?

Nick: It’s a borough-wide digital skills and employment programme for 16 to 25-yearolds. Starting on 8 July, it’s a 10-week course designed to build industry-relevant creative skills, offer real word experience and open up paid opportunities.

What can young people expect from the programme?

Nick: Filmmaking, digital communications, photography, marketing, branding, social media and web design. We chose these areas because of growing demand and because they reflect what young people Islington Life,Summer IslingtonLife, Summer2026 2023

are interested in. Running courses side by side creates opportunities to collaborate and network. We’ve already seen connections form, like a young person composing music for a film project.

The programme is supported by borough partners, including award-winning local agency 22 Design.

Braulio, you’re leading the filmmaking course – how did that come about?

Braulio says: Soapbox has been key to my journey. We wanted to create a ‘media gym’ — a space to experiment, make mistakes and grow. We provide the tools, support and energy; you bring the passion.

Together against hate Islington Council offers free training for anyone who wants to help tackle discrimination and support people who experience hate crimes. We spoke to Matthew Morrall, Investigations Manager at Newlon Housing Trust, about becoming a hate crime prevention champion and why it matters Why did you become a hate crime prevention champion?

I lead the investigations team at Newlon, a charitable housing association. We respond to hate crime and deal with disputes around our homes across North and East London, including Islington. Towards the end of 2024 we started seeing more reports of hate crimes, so taking on this role felt right and a good way to strengthen our response.

What did you learn during the training?

The training gave us fresh ideas we’ve already put into practice.

I learned more about different forms hate crime can take and the lasting impact it has. It’s something I talk about openly, including with my children. I’m doing the training again soon as a refresher.

What have you achieved in your role so far?

Before becoming a champion, some incidents may have been recorded as anti-social behaviour rather than a hate crime. That doesn’t happen now.

I’ve shared guidance with my team and delivered training to frontline colleagues who speak to residents daily. We’re now better at recognising hate crime quickly, offering support and encouraging people to report incidents to police. We’ve also started sharing information and reporting routes in resident newsletters.

What would you say to someone thinking about becoming a champion?

I’d recommend it to anyone.

It opens your eyes to what’s happening around you. A lot of hate crime goes unreported, and people often suffer in silence.

Whether you use the training in your job or community, it helps you respond faster and better support those affected.

Securing a safer future

As part of its commitment to Making it Happen for Islington, the council is committing £1.9 million towards improving safety Over the next few years you’ll see: • environmental improvements to reduce anti-social behaviour (ASB) • a mobile CCTV van sent to neighbourhoods in response to your reports of ASB • upgraded lighting • removing old phone boxes Funding will also be used to work with communities to identify improvements to reduce anti-social behaviour.

The council is working with the police and partners to take targeted action to tackle a range of issues including, organised crime, fly tipping, issues on housing estates and iillegal street trading in Finsbury Park.

You may see the Night Safety Hub, a van used by staff offering support on evenings-out, in busy areas like Finsbury Park, Angel and Exmouth Market as well as outside nightclubs. Managed by the council, Metropolitan Police, and Parkguard, the hub provides practical support to keep vulnerable people safe, de-escalate antisocial behaviour, and disrupt suspected criminal activity.

Learning, belonging and a new beginning “We were all in the same situation.”

At first, she was nervous about speaking. “When I moved here, I was afraid of being misunderstood because of my English,” she said. “But on this course, I started to speak little by little, and became more confident each week.”

Alongside her English classes, she attended the social care course weekly. Her tutor, Colin, recognised her potential and encouraged her to progress to Level 2 at Capital City College.

Today, Zinaida works as a professional carer, supporting older people and those with mental health needs “I just love it. It’s the job that made me happy here, to feel useful,” she said.

Through the council’s Adult Community Learning programme, residents can access a wide range of free courses and qualifications – whether to improve their English, retrain for a new career, or rebuild confidence after time away from work.

When Zinaida arrived in the UK from Ukraine in 2023 with her 11-year-old daughter, she was starting again, building a new life far from home. She hoped to return to work as a professional carer, but needed to improve her English and understand the UK care system.

After discovering Islington’s Adult Community Learning courses online, she enrolled in conversational English classes alongside a Level 1 Introduction to Adult Social Care course – spending nearly a year attending classes at Cat and Mouse Library.

“The people there were the same as me,” she said.

The Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration has officially opened in Islington, transforming historic former waterworks into a vibrant new cultural destination.

Islington Council played a key role in bringing the project to life, providing significant investment and working closely with the Centre to ensure it benefits local residents. The Centre is now the UK’s first dedicated space for illustration and a major new addition to the borough’s cultural offer We caught up with Director Lindsey Glen to find out what it’s all about What is the Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration?

Over the moon in a brand new home 3 ways to... garden for biodiversity

As part of Islington Council’s ongoing work to build more genuinely affordable homes for local people, new council homes are being delivered across the borough, helping residents stay in the communities they know and live more independently Denise has lived in Islington all her life, growing up on Ashbrook Road in Archway before moving to a council flat on Scholefield Road, on the Elthorne Estate, where she lived for many years.

problems, leaving her in constant pain and with limited mobility.

Everyday tasks became difficult.

Stairs were a struggle, and the walk to the nearest bus stop meant she was often unable to leave her home and stay connected to her community and local services.

Knowing new homes were being built on the Elthorne Estate, Denise updated her medical assessment and placed a bid, hoping for somewhere better suited to her needs.

While overcrowding isn’t something individuals can solve alone, small changes can help.

One key step is decluttering. It doesn’t need to be drastic, just 10–15 minutes a day, or simple rules like “one in, one out,” can reduce overwhelm.

Using vertical space is another effective strategy. Wall hooks, shelves and over‑door storage free up floors. Furniture that

Seeing the homes for the first time made a lasting impression.

“I couldn’t believe how beautiful they were,” she says. “The finish felt more like a five-star hotel.”

The interiors and integrated appliances exceeded her expectations.

Choosing a home wasn’t easy, but Denise was succesful in her bid for a lower ground floor flat that best met her accessibility needs. With step-free access, a lift, and a bus stop and GP practice just outside, the location has made a huge difference to her day-to-day life. Local shops are also only a short walk away.

Denise was among the first residents to move in and is already getting to know her neighbours. “Everyone seems really friendly,” she says. She also praised the support she received: “Islington Council staff have been really helpful.”

Now settling into her new home, Denise feels reassured as she prepares for her upcoming knee surgery. “I’m going to be so happy here,” she says. “To say I’m over the moon is an understatement.

Civic Pride

Serving the borough with pride voluntary organisations including Islington Citizens Advice, where she continues to support residents as a part-time adviser. She was elected councillor for St Peter’s and Canalside ward in 2022, building a strong record across housing, youth services, planning and licensing.

During her mayoral year, Cllr Ogunro will champion two charities close to her heart: St Luke’s Community Centre and Islington Boat Club.

She said: “There is nothing I enjoy more than serving our community, and I’m honoured to continue that as Mayor. St Luke’s provides vital support and a real sense of connection for people of all ages. As a mother of two, I also know how important opportunities like sport are, and I’m proud to support Islington Boat Club.”

Councillor Rosaline Ogunro has been sworn in as the new Mayor of Islington for 2026/27, bringing a lifetime of community service, creativity and compassion to the borough’s highest civic role.

Her appointment reflects a remarkable journey shaped by resilience, leadership and a deep commitment to helping others.

Cllr Ogunro began her career in Nigeria, where she followed her passion for broadcasting and became the first woman to present national network news for the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria. Reflecting on her early career, she recalls a defining moment in the country’s history.

She said: “Like many Nigerians, my life changed on Friday 13 February 1976. I was on the early morning shift when those involved in an attempted military coup took over the station. It was a dark day for the country, and one that has stayed with me ever since.”

After retiring from radio, she presented a couple programmes for television, one of them being ‘Crystal’, highlighting the important role of women in the family and community. She also co-founded the Women’s Optimum Development Foundation, supporting women’s voices and opportunities in Lagos, before moving to the UK in 2001.

The Mayor attends hundreds of community events each year.
