The winners of the “Best Hats” were to Bill Milligan, Wanda Bishop and Pat Dunning. Our lucky Social Raffle winner was a newcomer to Tara Woods, Linda Elliot. The two bouquets of red roses were won by Ken Clark and Joann Stovall. Congratulations to everyone.

If Nyquist wins the second race in the Triple Crown in the Preakness on Saturday, May 21st, watch for a poster to attend the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 11th. Last year we watched American Pharoah take the Triple Crown for the first time in 37 years. Even if you’re not an avid follower of horse racing, this is an exciting event to watch with your Tara Woods friends and neighbors.

It was a fun time at the Tara Woods Kentucky Derby Party on Saturday, May 7th. Everyone brought great hors d’oeuvres to share and the Mint Juleps were excellent. Thank you to everyone who helped us put this together, from setting up in the morning to cleaning up afterward. Your help is greatly appreciated.

MANAGER’S CORNER June 1st kicks off hurricane season in Florida. In the event of a hurricane, make sure you are prepared: create an emergency plan, assemble an emergency supply kit, have an evacuation plan, and prepare for high winds. Before going on vacation, remove all debris, ornaments and patio furniture. If mandatory evacuation is ordered, all residents must leave the property and not return until any curfews and roadways have been cleared. FYI Did you ever think of using solar lights inside at night if there is a power failure? They are safe to use and cheaper than batteries. Stick a solar light into a plastic drink bottle and they are the brightest safest lighting. In case of a thunderstorm, hurricane, or power failure, you can put one in every room and there will be plenty of light. The next day, just take them outside and they will recharge and be ready for you to use again.

COLUMNS STAFF

FROM THE PRESIDENT Things are definitely slowing down in Tara Woods. Most of the people going north are gone. The rest of us usually take a week or so vacation in the heat of the Summer. We can’t complain about the weather up to now. May was beautiful with little humidity – at least up to this writing. We all know how quickly the weather changes down here. You also never know when a party will pop up. Watch the bulletin board in the Clubhouse for the latest events. With this double issue of the Columns, some activities probably won’t be publicized in the paper. Visit the Clubhouse once in a while and you may find something you’d like to be a part of. The Board of Directors is hosting the July 4th Picnic once again this year. Bill Black and friends will be grilling the hot dogs and hamburgers, and we have homemade potato salad prepared by Donna Phillips and friends, cole slaw prepared by Trudy Victor, baked beans prepared by yours truly, plus corn on the cob, and ice cream for dessert. Look for the article in this Columns for more details. We hope you’ll join us for some pool volleyball and other fun games, as well as for some great food. We actually have a real Service Animal now in our community. When this dog is out with

its owner, it will always be wearing its vest to identify it as a Service Dog. This is the only animal allowed in the Clubhouse or other usually off-limits places in the community. Please be respectful of this situation and be aware of the necessity of this animal when out in Tara Woods. I have been alerted to what you might call a “pet peeve” regarding walking dogs throughout the community. Please be aware of your responsibilities as a pet owner. You should not be allowing your dog to deposit its droppings on the lawns of other homeowners, around the tennis courts or other recreation areas. It is greatly appreciated that dog owners pick up after their dogs, but that doesn’t negate the possibility of a tennis ball landing outside the courts to be picked up by an unknowing bystander, or a homeowner finding a surprise when working on their lawn. It is also the pet owner’s responsibility to bring home their pooch’s collection bags and deposit them in their own trash cans. It is not acceptable to drop them in your neighbors’ trash cans or any other receptacle not designated for that purpose. I’m sure those of you here for the Summer adhere to all the rules and there will be no problems until the Fall. I look forward to the respite from this issue.

I am still receiving request sheets for the Community Opportunity Fair to be held on Saturday, November 19th from 3:00 – 6:00 PM in the Clubhouse. There is still plenty of room, so please consider having your group participate. From what I see so far, there are some great ideas on advertising the groups. This should be a fun afternoon, as well as informational. Keep the applications coming! I expect more in September and October. We’ll accommodate everyone to the best of our ability. We have a number of new people living here year-round. Please make them feel welcome. Saturday Morning Coffee will be every Saturday at 8:00 AM from June through October. This is a great time to meet people and hear what’s happening in Tara Woods. Pancake Breakfast will resume on the second Saturday in November. Have a wonderful Summer. Stay cool and enjoy our beautiful, lush community when the Summer rains begin. Hope to see you on July 4th.

COMMUNITY EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM

16

Attention Tara Woods Residents It’s that time of year again that we need to be mindful of the possibility of a hurricane affecting our community (June 1-November 30). Forethought and planning should begin NOW. The following is a list of choices that are available to you. Make plans ASAP as to what you will do in the event of a major storm. The safest and best thing you can do is get out of town! Familiarize yourself with short-term living accommodations North, South and East of Fort Myers NOW. Local

news will tell you in which direction you should go to avoid the impact of an approaching storm; and because you have researched your alternatives, you will be prepared to start making reservations. Plan to go to one of the Lee County shelters. A list of those shelters is available at www. leegov.com/publicsafety. If you have special medical needs, the county does have special needs shelters that you must pre-register for NOW. There is one Lee County pet friendly shelter at the present time. Visit the website above for the information you will need to protect yourself from a possible storm event. The last choice as a safe haven from a storm event can be the Tara Woods Clubhouse. While it is not a certified public shelter, our Tara Woods Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) does pre-

pare the Clubhouse for as much storm protection as possible. If you have a pet and feel you may select this location option, then you must register your pet NOW with CERT. Availability of space will be on a “First Come, First Served” basis. Please read the CERT Hurricane Plan June 2014 at www.twha.us for registration form and requirements. A choice you should NOT make is to stay in your manufactured home with hurricane force winds predicted. We learned that lesson here in Tara Woods after Hurricane Charlie in 2004 and Hurricane Wilma in 2005. Resources: www.leegov.com/publicsafety – This website will provide all of the information, documents and forms that Lee County publishes

The Mid-Atlantic Club enjoyed a cook-out to celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day on the Clubhouse Verandah on Sunday, April 17th.

The Club furnished hot dogs and hamburgers with members bringing a variety of side dishes. Most of our seasonal members were still here and it was good to be able to have this celebration with them in attendance. With only 45 total paid members, we had a great turnout with 41 members and one guest present! Several of the men took turns cooking and telling tall tales, while the women had a good time talking about the men!!! Since this event took the

place of our regularly scheduled May and June meetings, the Club is open for suggestions. If anyone wants to have an informal get-together on our reserved dates, which are the third Sunday of every month, give any of the officers a call so we can get the word out. there any infidelity in your marriage?” “Yes, both my son and daughter have stereo sets. We don’t necessarily like the music - all that hip hop and rap tap - but we can’t seem to do anything about it.” “Ma’am, does your husband ever beat you up?” “Yes, he gets up every morning before I do and makes the coffee.” Finally, in frustration, the judge asked, “Lady, why in hell do you want a divorce? “Oh, I don’t want a divorce,” she replied. “I’ve never wanted a divorce; my husband does. The damn fool says he can’t communicate with me.”

During a visit to my doctor, I asked him, “How do you determine whether or not an older person should be put in a Nursing Home?”. “Well,” he said, “we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the person to empty the bathtub.” “Oh, I understand,” I said. “A normal person would use the bucket because it is bigger than the spoon or the teacup.” “No” he said. “A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?”.

An old man lay sprawled across three entire seats at a concert. When the usher came by and noticed this, he whispered to the old man, “Sorry, sir, but you’re only allowed one seat.” The old man didn’t budge. The usher became more impatient. “Sir, if you don’t get up from there I’m going to have to call the manager.” Once again, the old man just muttered and did nothing. The usher marched briskly back up the aisle, and in a moment he returned with the manager. Together the two of them tried repeatedly to move the old dishevelled man, but with no success. Finally they summoned the police. The officer surveyed the situation briefly then asked, “All right buddy, what’s your name?” “Fred,” the old man moaned. “Where you from, Fred?” asked the police officer. With a terrible strain in his voice, and without moving, Fred replied, “The balcony…”.

SOUND & LIGHTING Your support inspires us to keep providing professional entertainment for the community and providing support to community groups, organizations and resident events. Many of you have told us that when the Sound & Lighting puts on a show, you know you are going to enjoy it and we appreciate hearing that. Recently, two members of our group have left our community and now we are looking for new members who would be interested in working with audio/visual systems and equipment. Our loss of these members will make it difficult to continue to provide our services to the community. Experience is preferred but not necessary. If interested, please talk to Polly Brown or Frank Millette. Once again from the Sound & Lighting Committee, thank you for your continued support. Frank Millette

ENTERTAINING NEWS So Ladies and Gentlemen….. during the slow summer months I want to highlight the stories of how some of our Entertainers and the people who work with us on a regular basis got hooked on “show business”. Last month I told the story of my first experience on the stage. This month we have more; I hope you find them interesting. This first one is the story of one of our most beloved actors. He has entertained us for a long time and we look forward each year to see what excitement he brings to the stage. Hmm, my story of how I got into the plays may be too long. It was about mid-December of the third year we lived in Tara Woods, 1994. Since I was first in the phone book, I got a call from (I think) Wayne Norris asking if I would be in the play that year. One of the actors in the play, George Reid, was very sick and they had to postpone the play the year before. He was still sick

and the play would have to be cancelled if I didn’t take a part. I explained that I had never been on stage and couldn’t do a part. I said I would help build the set or whatever, but I could not get on stage. Well, they talked me into coming over to read some of the part, and then they talked me into doing the play, “Getting Mama Married”, January 1995. All during the rehearsals, I swore I would never be in another play. Well, that held up until the first night we did the play and I got my first laugh on one of my first lines. I was hooked and have been doing plays for about the last 22 years. Yikes! - Ron Andrews Now, we have one other story. This wonderful lady is the Treasurer of the Entertainers. She recently joined us on stage in 2012 and 2014, both times as Mae West (certainly not type casting). She has been an inspiration to us and we love her dearly. Hopeful-

ly, we will see her again on stage, but for now read her story. I guess you might call me the “gran’dame” of The Entertainers as I’m the only person left who acted in our first production who is still in The Entertainers. How did I get started? My husband, Wayne, performed in musical comedies up North. Naturally, I had to participate or be a stage “widow” as he had the lead in “Guys and Dolls”, “Pajama Game”, “Plain and Fancy”, etc. I had never been involved in anything remotely close to being on stage and truly thought I’d never be able to do it. Wayne encouraged me so much that I had to give it a try. After I became involved in “Guys and Dolls” as one of the Hat Box Girls, I discovered how much fun it could be and I-WASHOOKED!!!!! When we moved to Tara Woods 28 years ago and saw that beautiful stage, Wayne decided it needed to be used, thus The Entertainers was born. In

April 1992 we did our first show “So Nice Not To See You”. Everyone in Tara Woods responded so enthusiastically that we had to repeat it in October for the Snowbirds. Now that I’ve retired from the stage, I help out in other ways, as there are many things to do. Who knows, if a bit part or cameo presents itself, you might see me back again. In the meantime, I hope you will all support The Entertainers as you have in the past as we love to entertain you. - Miriam Norris Pat-one, Stage Manager Entertainers

OFF Labor Only

The Garden Club has no meetings until our first meeting for the new season on Saturday, October 8th. This is the only meeting before the Fashion Show on Friday, November 4th. Please remember that this year The Garden Club also has the responsibility for the Craft Fair on Saturday, November 5th. These are two very important events. Everyone please mark your calendars. Recently someone removed a hanging plant from the butterfly garden and replaced it with a dead plant. I really don’t know what to say about this except that I felt I needed to mention it so everyone is aware that this occurred.

WHAT TO PLANT – JUNE What to plant Annuals: Annuals that can take full sun during hot summer months include celosia, portulaca, vinca, and some coleus. See: Gardening with Annuals in Florida Perennials: Add bright color to the landscape with a variety of salvias including blue sage, ‘Hot Lips’ salvia, Mexican sage, and rose leaf sage. See: Gardening with Perennials in Florida Palms: Summer’s warm, rainy weather is the perfect time to plant palms. Make sure to not cover the trunk with soil. See: Palms for North Florida Transplanting Palms in the Landscape Herbs: Plant heat loving herbs, including basil, Mexican tarragon, and rosemary. Pinch back regularly to prevent flowering and enhance branching. See: Herbs in the Florida Garden Vegetables: Plant okra, southern pea, lima bean, and sweet potato. It’s too late to plant tomatoes. See: Florida Vegetable Gardening Guide

What to do Pests: Monitor the landscape weekly for harmful insects. Knowing which insects commonly attack a plant can aid in identification and treatment. See: Landscape Integrated Pest Management. Irrigation: June is normally the start of the rainy season, but if rainfall has been spotty, watch for drought stress and water as needed. See: Fertilization and Irrigation Needs for Florida Lawns and Landscapes. Palms and cycads: Watch for nutrient deficiencies or environmental problems with palms and correct using an appropriate treatment. Keep lawn fertilizers away from the rootzone. See: Physiological Disorders of Landscape Palms. Pruning: Many summer flowering shrubs, like hibiscus, oleander, and crape myrtle, benefit from frequent light pruning during the warmer months to encourage further blooming. Azaleas can still be pruned in June without harming next spring’s buds. See: Pruning Landscape Trees and Shrubs. Rejuvenate lawn areas: For areas where grass doesn’t grow well, try replacing it with versatile ground covers. See: Your FloridaFriendly Landscaping TM Guide to Plant Selection and Landscape Design. Lawn problems: Yellow and brown lawn patches can be caused by chinch bugs, disease, or lack of water. Take time to determine the cause so your remedy is effective. WHAT TO PLANT – JULY What to plant Bedding Plants: Summer annuals to plant now include celosia, coleus, torenia, and ornamental pepper. See: Gardening with Annuals in Florida. Bulbs: Butterfly lily and gladiolus are bulbs that can be planted during the middle of summer. See: Bulbs for Florida. Vegetables: Start seeds now to

transplant later into the fall vegetable garden. See: Starting the Garden with Transplants. Herbs: While summer is too hot to start herbs from seeds, many will do well if started from small plants. See: Herbs in the Florida Garden. Palms: Continue planting palms while the rainy season is in full swing. Support large palms with braces for 6-8 months after planting. Nails should not be driven directly into a palm trunk. What to do Trees: Prepare for hurricane season by checking trees for damaged or weak branches and prune if needed. Hire an ISA certified arborist. See: International Society of Arboriculture Pruning Young Trees Pruning Mature Trees. Lawn insects: Lawn pests can be a problem this time of year. Before treating, make sure an insect is the culprit and treat only the affected area. See: Insect Management in Your Florida Lawn. Solarize the vegetable garden: Use summer’s heat to prepare the vegetable garden soil for fall planting. It takes four to six weeks to kill weeds, disease and nematodes, so start now. See: Introduction to Soil Solarization. Irrigation: An inexpensive rain shut off device can save money by overriding an irrigation system when it rains. If one is already installed, check that it is operating properly. See: Residential Irrigation System Rainfall Irrigation Shutoff Devices. Pests on Ornamental Plants: Small white dots or stippling on the leaves of azaleas and other ornamental plants may indicate lace bugs at work. Spraying forcefully with water helps control this pest. See: Lace bugs on Ornamental Plants. Tropical Fruit Trees: Check for damage to fruit or leaves; take action to minimize the damage on developing fruit or the overall health of the tree.

Don’t Keep Family in the Dark About Your Plans

You might work diligently at building a financial roadmap for your retirement years and a comprehensive estate plan. But you can’t just create these strategies – you also have to communicate them. Specifically, you need to inform your spouse and your grown children what you have in mind for the future – because the more they know, the fewer the surprises that await them down the road. Let’s start with your spouse. Ideally, of course, you and your spouse should have already communicated about your respective ideas for retirement and have come to an agreement on the big issues, such as when you both plan to retire, where you’ll live during retirement, and what you want to do s retirees (volunteer, travel, work part time and so on). But what you both might have let slip through the cracks are the important specifics related to financing your retirement. You’ll need to answer several questions, including these: • When will you each start taking Social Security? • Are there strategies for maximizing both of your Social Security payments? • When will you need to start tapping into your respective retirement accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k)? And, once you do start withdrawing from these accounts, how much should you take out each year? You may want to work with a financial professional to address these issues, but however you proceed, you and your spouse need to be “on the same page” regarding the key financial components of your retirement. Now, consider your grown children. You need to clearly communicate your estate plans to them, not only for the sake of openness and honesty, but also because they may well play active roles within those plans. So when talking to your children, make sure you cover these areas: • Durable power of attorney – You may well decide to give one of your grown children the durable power of attorney to pay bills and make financial choices on your behalf if you are unable to do so. • Estate executor – An executor is the person or entity you name in your will to carry out your wishes. An executor has a variety of responsibilities, so you’ll want to choose someone who is honest and capable of dealing with legal and financial matters. Again, you could ask a grown child to serve as your executor, but, to avoid potential conflict of interests among your children, you might want to go outside the family. Talk with an attorney about how best to name your executor.

Status of will and living trust – Assuming you have already drawn up a will, share it with your grown children. The same is true with a living trust, a popular estate-planning tool that may allow your survivors to avoid going through the time-consuming, public and expensive process of probate. A will and a living trust will obviously contain a great deal of information your children should know about – so take the time to explain your thinking when you created these documents. You want to enjoy a comfortable retirement, and you want to leave a meaningful legacy through your estate plans. To help accomplish both these goals, you need to include your loved ones in your arrangements – so open those lines of communication.
