NEW RESIDENT GET TOGETHER Hey New Residents!

We had a great time at my first 2022 New Resident Kick Off Get Together as the new Welcome Chairman! Forty-five attended including my wonderful Welcome Committee: Janet DeCosmo, Harriet Hart, Jane Sheaffer, Carolee Racer, Debra Dix, Terri Fachetti, Gail Hodge and my husband, Dennis. Not to mention the special appearance of HOA Board Members Lisa Bellanca, Art Keen, Susan Bell, Kathy Williamson (Welcome Committee also), Cindy Baron and Mary Lou Buss!! It was nice of them to want to meet our new residents!

There were many that missed our Get Together, but never fear - we are doing this every month. CERT INFORMATION Hurricane Season started early this year. Please remember to have an emergency plan in place. If you have elderly or handicapped neighbors, please work with them so they are ready in case of a disaster.

Update on smoke detector installations: Unfortunately, the Red Cross is no longer providing free smoke detectors to the NFM Fire Department. The Fire Department is working with Home Depot to try to secure a grant that would provide one hundred units to them monthly. If you would like to get on the waiting list for free smoke detectors installations in the future, contact Birdie Dugo (617-974-8502). If you install smoke detectors yourself the Fire Department recommends that you put a unit in each bedroom as well as in the common area of your home.

The blood drive organized by CERT on May 6th was a success even though many of our residents have left for the summer. Thank you to everyone who took part in the drive; we were able to collect twenty-four units.

We are always looking for CERT volunteers.

November 8, 10, 15, 17 and 18 the NFM Fire Department will be offering the classes necessary to become certified as a first responder in case of a disaster in Del Tura. The first four classes will be held at Herons Glen, and the last hands-on class will be conducted at the Fire Department.

All classes run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. If you are interested in signing up, contact Bertie at the above number.

In May I had the chance to attend the new resident gathering hosted by the HOA Welcome Committee. It had a great turnout; 29 new residents, 10 Welcome Committee volunteers, and 6 HOA Board members.

What a great afternoon. The committee put together a delicious buffet and also served beverages. I met so many interesting and friendly new residents during the social hour. After that we went around the room, introduced ourselves, gave our addresses and two activities in which we were interested. What a diverse group of people reside in Del Tura. Some of the interests included golfing, cards, shuffleboard, wine, shopping, eating/food, card making, motorcycles, travel,

The women who have joined this club have bonded over meetings, luncheons, outings, and even in-house events and new friendships are made each time we gather. Members have become truly wealthy in the number of friends that they’ve “collected” when they joined.

May’s luncheon was held at Fancy’s Southern Café in Ft. Myers. We had a great turnout for it being the slow season and everyone enjoyed the down-home cooking. A few members had a chance to go to the Van Gogh experience in Sarasota and loved it!

Our snowbirds are leaving our little Paradise little by little and the full-time residents are now planning smaller gatherings until their return in the fall. This month we will enjoy another BINGO game, but this time we’ll have a hot dog and ice cream social before we play. June’s luncheon is being held at the new restaurant that opened in Sabal Springs, The Standard. And July’s hasn’t been decided on yet.

We meet the first Tuesday of every month at 4:00 in the Royal Palm to socialize and celebrate the month’s birthdays while we enjoy a little something sweet to eat. At 4:30 we begin our meeting. This month’s meeting will be on June 7th and our July meeting will be held on July 5th.

The Good Timers has more than doubled in size since reinventing ourselves from a singles club to a Women’s club. With over 70 members it has become difficult to find places that accept more than 20 to 25 people at a time. Because of this, we are not accepting new members.

I wish everyone a very enjoyable summer, and a safe trip back home to those of you who are leaving us but fear not - you’ll have fun things to look forward to in the Fall when you return!

And even though you won’t be at the meetings please check your emails to stay abreast of what’s going on.

If Dogs Could Talk Even though we have talked about these toads in the past it is important that you are aware of their danger to our dogs and cats.

These frogs are not native to Florida.

They are very poisonous to dogs and cats.

If you see one you should humanely kill the toad. This is the recommended way: The University of Florida recommends euthanizing them by rubbing or spraying 20% benzocaine toothache gel or sunburn spray (not 5% lidocaine) on the toad. In a few minutes, it will become unconscious.

Put the toad in a sealed plastic bag in the freezer for 24-48 hours to ensure it is humanely euthanized.

Unlike native frogs, adult cane toads have all of these features: 1. Distinct bony ridges above the eyes, which run down the snout.

2. A large parotid gland behind each eye.

3. Unwebbed hands but webbed toes.

4. Dry warty skin.

IF YOUR PET IS SPRAYED If you think that your pet has come into contact with a bufo toad, immediately rinse out your pet’s mouth with a soaking wet washcloth several times to remove any toxin from the mouth.

BEGINNINGS Home is Where the Heart Is

Gary Lauders and his wife, Gay, bought their first home in Del Tura 35 years ago. It was 1987 and Gay was working at Sun Bank. One of the loan officers she worked with had gotten a loan back and asked if she and Gary might know someone who would want a home in Del Tura. At that time residents only needed to be 50 years old to purchase in the community, so just making the cut at 45 and 51, Gary and Gay decided to take a look.

316 San Remo was built in 1983 and had a beautiful great room and a fireplace with built-in wall units. Unfortunately, it also had a large hole in the living room, which, needless to say, had

By Karen Handley and Cindy Swisher caused a lot of damage. Gary and Gay bought the house anyway, made repairs, and in December of 1987 they moved in.

The neighborhood was full of friendly people.

Potlucks and get-togethers were the norm. After a long, hard day at work Gary and Gay often made their way to the pool and had their own, private happy hour. Other evenings they would head down to the Pub - which in 1987 had a bar with only four stools, a couple of tables and a small, outdoor screened porch - to have drinks with friends. The only problem was finding your house on the way back home. All the houses were one of three shades of tan!

Continued from the previous page Gary and his wife were active residents of Del Tura with Gay even serving as one of the first HOA presidents, but in 2000 Gary and Gay decided to sell their home and move on. Their absence was short-lived, however. They missed life in Del Tura so much that in 2001 they bought the house right next door to their first, at 318 San Remo, and moved back to their old neighborhood.

Because they had sold their first home to friends, they planted a beautiful butterfly garden between the two houses to commemorate the couple’s return to Del Tura and their lasting friendship.

Some of Gary’s fondest memories of Del Tura involve Hurricane Charley. When the storm hit in 2004, Gary and Gay evacuated and went to a friend’s house nearby to ride out the storm. As soon as the all-clear was given, they headed back to Del Tura to see if their home was still standing.

And standing it was, with no damage at all. As a matter of fact, despite the harsh winds and torrential rains, the cup of coffee Gary had left on the counter in his haste to leave hadn’t moved an inch. It was still right where he left it, without a drop missing!

A more revealing Charley memory involves Port-A-Potties. Because the community was without power and sewer for 10 days following the hurricane, the management company brought in several of them as an emergency measure.

Gary really got to know his neighbors then.

JUNE / JULY 2022 He remembers learning a lot about them while standing in line first thing in the morning, PJs and all, waiting for the facilities!

Gary and Gay were a big part of Del Tura and when Gay passed away the entire community felt the loss. After a few years passed, Gary knew it was time to re-engage, so he decided to join the Del Tura Rep. It was there that he met Janelle.

They both had leading roles in Phantom of the Opera. Friendship turned into something deeper, and Gary and Janelle were married in November of 2021. Gary gave up his home on San Remo and moved in with his new bride.

Gary has never regretted his decision to move here. For 35 years Del Tura has been home. From his first house and the life he lived here with Gay, to the new adventure he and Janelle are embarking on, and everything in between, Gary knows this is where he belongs. “All through the many ups and some downs, I wouldn’t want to live anywhere but in Del Tura,” he said.

Packaging Pitfalls

by Cindy Swisher I hate toothpaste tubes!

Remember when the tube was designed to be rolled up from the bottom so that every last bit of paste could be neatly extracted from it?

Not so any longer.

The easily folded tubes of yesterday have been replaced with some abominable material that refuses to be molded into any other form, and, despite my best efforts, always bounces back to its original state.

No more tidy emptying of the tube.

No matter how hard I try it always springs back to the way it was, resulting in gobs of gook at the exit point.

Whose idea was this?

Did they want to ensure the name CREST was always visible to the casual observer? If so, mission accomplished! And, thanks to their masterful planning, the cap is always oozing sticky goop.

And what about the packaging beauty products come in? You need an engineering degree from MIT to be able to open the box on the first try.

What happened to the days of open the box and pull out the jar of cream?

Sadly, they are gone forever.

It now takes 20 minutes and a wrench to pry the jar away from its plastic dwelling.

But the worst by far are the bottles and jars that house over-the-counter medicines and vitamins.

The arrows never line up. Ever.

It doesn’t matter if it’s a pop off or a “squeeze and twist,” the markings are a ploy. They are designed to ensure that you really, really need what’s inside. That, or someone far away, at some obscure pharmaceutical plant, gets a sadistic thrill out of knowing he has frustrated countless souls who just want a Tylenol. If you are somehow able to muster the strength of Samson and pry the lid from the bottle you must then get past “the seal.”

I’m not sure what those barriers are made of, but I do know they are impervious to any human fingernail – manicured or otherwise.

It’s easier, sometimes, to live with the headache.

I feel I’m at war with the products that I buy.

I know, in theory, that I’m smarter than a jar full of Vitamin C, but am I really?

Has it always been this way?

I think not. Still, I watch my grandkids – you know, the ones the caps are meant to protect – peel the barriers away with ease.

Tell me it isn’t so.

I see myself, in the not-too-distant future, like the cat in the cartoon who finds himself locked in a room with nothing but cans of tuna and, alas, no opener.

What investors can – and can’t – control As an investor, you can easily feel frustrated to see short-term drops in your investment statements.

But while you cannot control the market, you may find it helpful to review the factors you can control.

Many forces affect the financial markets, including geopolitical events, corporate profits and interest rate movements – forces beyond the control of most individual investors.

In any case, it’s important to focus on the things you can control, such as these: • Your ability to define your goals – One area in which you have total control is your ability to define your goals.

Like most people, you probably have short-term goals – such as saving for a new car or a dream vacation – and long-term ones, such as a comfortable retirement. Once you identify your goals and estimate how much they will cost, you can create an investment strategy to help achieve them. Over time, some of your personal circumstances will likely change, so you’ll want to review your time horizon and risk tolerance on a regular basis, adjusting your strategy when appropriate. And the same is true for your goals – they may evolve over time, requiring new responses from you in how you invest.

• Your response to market downturns – When the market drops and the value of your investments declines, you might be tempted to take immediate action in an effort to stop the losses. This is understandable – after all, your investment results can have a big impact on your future.

However, acting hastily could work against you – for example, you could sell investments that still have solid fundamentals and are still appropriate for your needs. If you can avoid decisions based on short-term events, you may help yourself in the long run.

• Your commitment to investing – The financial markets are almost always in flux, and their movements are hard to predict.

If you can continue investing in all markets – good, bad or sideways – you will likely make much better progress toward your goals than if you periodically were to take a “time out.” Many people head to the investment sidelines when the market tumbles, only to miss out on the beginnings of the next rally. And by steadily investing, you will increase the number of shares you own in your investments – and the larger your ownership stake, the greater your opportunities for building wealth.

• Your portfolio’s level of diversification – While diversification itself can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses, it can help greatly reduce the impact of market volatility on your portfolio. Just how you diversify your investments depends on several factors, but the general principle of maintaining a diversified portfolio should govern your approach to investing.

It’s a good idea to periodically review your portfolio to ensure it’s still properly diversified.

The world will always be filled with unpredictable, uncontrollable events, and many of them will affect the financial markets to one degree or another. But within your own investment world, you always have a great deal of control – and with it, you have the power to keep moving toward all your important financial objectives.

PICKLEBALL FUN Hello All, Well here I am back in Michigan writing an article about PB (which I finally got to play here).

Anyhow, this month we are going to actually start to “play” a game. Hopefully, you have watched “how to play PB” on YouTube or maybe have even wandered down to the courts to see a game played. This is the best way to maybe somewhat understand what is happening. Either way, let’s give it a shot.

Obviously to start the game, you need your paddle, shoes, a ball, a court, and 4 players (at this time we are going to start learning the game of doubles). Who starts the serve?

Well that depends on the court’s “rules” on this. Each place where PB is played may be different. Usually there is a certain “side” that starts.

Here at Del Tura, the “tall” fence side starts the game.

To begin, there are two players on each side of the net. The side that is starting the game will have both players back on the baseline (maybe even behind the line a little bit to be ready for a deep return after the

serve). The players on the other side will have one player back (the player receiving the serve - this player will be on the deuce side) and the other player will be up by the kitchen line (the add side, just a couple inches from the kitchen line).

Ok that’s it for now! Next month we will “start” the game - yay. But between now and then, watch it either in person or on YouTube, trust me, it will help you understand it more.

AN OPEN LETTER TO DEL TURA A PLEA FOR A DIRECTOR The Choralaires recently lost their director, Dave Adams, who for the last seven years worked hard to build a strong and balanced choir. Dave’s musical skills, coupled with his ability to make practices fun despite the demands he placed on us, produced shows that not only wowed Del Turians, but also provided some sixty plus music-loving residents with an opportunity to sing their hearts out.

Dave was not our first director. Over the years others have led the choir and each has been loved by its members for their efforts.

Without them, that outlet to meet and sing with like-minded Del Turians would have been lost. That is where we are today. Bereaved that Dave has left us, though we all understand his desire to be free of the responsibility of weekly rehearsals. Bereaved because as it stands now, there will be no Christmas or spring concerts.

Bereaved because for most of us, singing and working together is one of the best aspects of living here. Bereaved because the community will also suffer the loss of an almost institutional source of entertainment.

In the April edition of the Tower, our HOA director detailed the “job description/duties” required for the director position. While she accurately described what Dave Adams and his wife Nancy have done during their tenure, some of the Choralaires think it’s important to point out that two concerts a year are not an absolute requirement. In his final year as Director, we did only one—the Christmas concert—which meant 11-13 rehearsals in the fall, not another 11-13 in the spring. That was perfectly acceptable to all of us, especially because the spring agenda— the play and other shows—is quite full. Several Choralaires are involved in theater, for example, and they were stretched to the limit trying to do both.

Beyond the number of rehearsals, another extremely important fact is that we have a pianist willing to play for us, at least for the next couple of years. RuthAnn Lugten is a former piano teacher, quite capable of taking over the huge responsibility of learning the music and assisting the director.

BIRD BATH FOR GARDEN The garden club will be purchasing a bird bath for the “Native Demonstration Garden.”

Out of all the “creature comforts” you can offer the birds in your landscape, water is the most important.

Select a shallow basin that has a rough surface and gently sloping sides, so birds will have sure footing. You can choose either a ground-level or a pedestal-style basin. Ground-level basins mimic natural water sources but can leave birds at risk.

Placed in a shady spot, your birdbath provides our feathered friends with a place to rest, drink, and bathe. Place the basin away from shrubs, since predators can hide there. The best spot is near a tree, so that birds can make a quick getaway.

Place your birdbath near a garden hose so it’s easy to fill. Every ten days or so, scrub the basin with a mild bleach solution.

Dirty birdbaths can spread lethal diseases among birds.

The sound of moving water attracts birds, so consider giving birds extra incentive to visit by adding a small fountain.

REFLECTIONS Summer Pleasures Here I am in Paradise and thinking about the summertimes of the past. Just thinking about how things in life change, more specifically how the definition of “summer pleasures” takes on new meaning as the years go by. Don’t get me wrong I am very content with the simple pleasures of the present, but like everyone else I simply can’t help thinking back to those carefree days of past summers. Remember the song “Those Lazy, Hazy,Crazy Days Of Summer” that Nat King Cole sang to us in 1963…just a few years ago . Well, the days are still lazy and hazy, but the craziness has been toned down just a wee bit, well maybe just a little bit more than a wee bit! Thinking back to June of 1963… high school days…the excitement of summer vacation building…thinking, will that bell ever ring?!

And it finally did! We couldn’t get out of the building fast enough! We were free for at least eight weeks and we were going to make every minute count. Remember those plans we made with our friends? I’m sure you do! Sometimes the way we pictured our summer plans to be didn’t always turn out the way we dreamed, but we made the best out of it. Nothing was going to burst our bubble! Unfortunately, there were other factors that didn’t always coincide with our dreams, things like chores and younger sibling responsibilities. So maybe we couldn’t be as carefree as we had hoped to be but we knew if we didn’t tow the mark there wouldn’t be any summer pleasure at all!

Little did I realize then that all of the complaining that I did about having to be responsible for my younger brother would end up being some of my most cherished memories.

Those plans I made with my friends to meet at the beach, have picnics in the park, play miniature golf, and chase the ice cream truck ended up being the best times. They didn’t mind having him tag along and I was thankful for the extra pairs of eyes! Looking back at that summer

By Dianne J. Roderick of ‘63 and the things that we did were a big part of the simple pleasures of my early years.

Summers on the peninsula in New Bedford were amazing! We lived on the east side and lived a short walking distance from the Acushnet River. There was a small beach area there with a beautiful view of the harbor and directly across, a clear view of Fort Phoenix in Fairhaven. We would set our blankets down and spend most of the afternoon swimming, building sand castles, enjoying our picnic lunch, and of course anticipating the bell that would signal the arrival of “Manny’s Ice Cream Truck”. As a child I didn’t appreciate all of that breathtaking beauty but as the years passed I began to realize just how blessed we were!

On those summer days when the weather was not as cooperative, we would take an afternoon walk to the Tastee Freeze and play miniature golf. We would pay a quarter for a round of golf and, if you were lucky enough to get a hole-inone, you would get a free ice cream cone. Of course my brother was usually the one who received the free ice cream cone…with a little help from a friend. Thank goodness for friends!

I can remember those rainy summer afternoons and being disappointed, but it seemed we always found something to do. Let’s see... There was always that summer reading list that everyone seemed to be putting off…well maybe later. Cleaning my room? Where did that thought come from? Board games were always a possibility (now that was somewhat exciting for our time). Or if you had a younger sibling you could set up a tent in the living room. Now that was fun!!

How about those summer evenings under the streetlights? It was about a lot more than catching fireflies, kicking the can, or playing hide and go seek! The bond that we made with our neighborhood friends throughout those growing years are the memories that bring the smiles, and maybe even a few giggles, as we reflect back on those special times.

GATE GABBER

By Michael Johnson Well, we were in California last month and Portland, Oregon the month before. We’re going back to Portland.... shortly.

You’re already aware of my traveling companion, John, making terrible decisions. It was my turn driving. It was late at night and John flips a cigarette butt out his passenger-side window into an MG convertible. There are two young women in the car. They appear slightly older than John and me, maybe in their early 20s.

John and I are both 18.

John is yelling apologies out the window. The girls pull over and we end up chatting and eventually following the girls to San Jose. Long story short, summer ends and I end up going with one of the girls (now my girlfriend), to Portland.

As you’ll recall jobs were few and far between. My girlfriend was a student at Portland State University. I, with all my traveling, had yet to graduate high school. I thought it would be fun to attend night classes with my girlfriend, who was artistic and majoring in Art History. At the same time I was trying to find a job. One day I found myself at an employment agency, speaking with a VERY attractive woman, probablyyyyy 28ish. She was telling me about all the different jobs she held throughout her young life.

She recently had been a stripper!!! I told my girlfriend about my experience, and she saw some humor in it.

Well, no job landed. I’m now back in night classes, wondering when I might find work.One of the classes I had signed up for was sculpting. I found myself sitting at a small table with a lump of clay on it. The classroom door opened and a woman in a white terry cloth robe walked in. She walked to a dining room sized table in the middle of the room, climbed into the table and removed her robe!!!! Immediately I realized I was going to have to make my blob of clay into a nude woman. I was a nervous wreck. The instructor, noticing my apparent uncomfortable demeanor, took my hand and took me to the model’s table, pointing out elbow curves, curves behind her knees and gave instructions on how to replicate the curves with my clay. As I did my best to pay attention, I found myself looking at the model closely…her face.

She smiled and said, “Hi Mike”. I found myself staring at the woman from the employment agency!!!!!
