ATTENTION ALL DEL TURA CRAFTERS I am happy to announce that the 2022 Del Tura Craft Fair will be held on Friday, November 4th and Saturday, November 5th, 2022. This year we are going to try something different… the entire month of April will be open for vendor registration to Del Tura residents only. If you are interested in being a vendor to sell your crafts you will need to grab your spot quickly, because on May 1st we will be sending an email with registration and guideline forms to all former vendors to fill the remaining spots. The important thing to remember is not to forget!

Last month the Good Timers luncheon was held at Isabel and Annabell’s Mexican restaurant in Punta Gorda. For most of us this was the first time there and it definitely won’t be the last. This month we’re staying a little closer to home and we’re going to Herons Glen.

At our Potluck BINGO last month over 30 members were able to sit around and socialize while munching on a variety of delicious food and play six games of BINGO. It was another successful afternoon of good food, good friends, good times and several lucky winners!

In The Heights on a Friday evening so we can enjoy their delicious prime rib dinner. We are creating our own fun times and with the variety of activities we have we definitely have to mark our calendars so we don’t forget!

The Good Timers meet the first Tuesday of every month. We gather at 4:00 to socialize and celebrate the month’s birthdays with a little something sweet to eat and then at 4:30 we begin our meeting which lasts approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Dues are $30 for the year and checks should be made out to GOOD TIMERS. This month’s meeting will be on April 5th in the Royal Palm. The club is open to all women residents of Del Tura. Recently I came across an article entitled HOA 101: Tips for Living in an HOA. I thought sharing the information in the article would be a good short read if you are looking to enhance your Del Tura living experience.

1. Know the rules and respect them. If anything is unclear, do not hesitate to ask for help. Your HOA board will be happy to answer any questions you have and fill in any missing details.

2. Try to be a good neighbor. Following the rules will also help keep a good relationship between you and your neighbors. If you suspect your neighbor is ignoring rules, do not jump to conclusions. It may be wise to talk to your neighbor face-to-face before reporting them. Keeping open lines of communication between you and your neighbors is always a good idea. Also, do not hesitate to reach out to them and invite them to HOA meetings and community activities.

3. Get out and enjoy everything your community has to offer. Getting out and enjoying the extra things your community offers will likely improve your sense of community and make your experience of living there far more enjoyable.

4. Actively participate and volunteer within the community and with the HOA. Many volunteer opportunities are available through the HOA. Start by attending

community meetings and getting to know your current board members. Often, your board will have additional committees for activities that you can help run.

Likewise, you might want to consider running for a HOA board directors’ position.

5. Stay connected and communicate often. Communities are always changing and adapting to meet the needs of their residents. While your board may try its best to keep you informed, it is a good idea to do all that you can to stay connected.

Make sure you are signed up to receive any community communications, whether it be through the mail, emails, text messages, or phone calls. Additionally, many communities will also use online apps and websites to send out notifications.

Whatever way your HOA communicates, make sure you are plugged in and not missing any relevant news or announcements.

In last month’s Tower I mentioned I would be giving an update on the HOA board’s goals for 2022. Due to scheduling issues, I will provide this information to you next month.

AROUND THE GROUNDS Wow, what a busy couple of months for the Grounds Committee. During January and February the Grounds Committee opened over 60 work orders with Hometown America. We are happy to say that out of those 60, approximately half have been completed and most of them within 24 hours. Thank you, Julie! Some of the items that remain open are either needing materials, outside contractors, or possibly capital expenditures that need to be added to the annual budget.

The Grounds Committee would also like to say thank you to the residents who are doing their part to help keep Del Tura beautiful and a place we are proud of. We thank you for cleaning up your tables in the courtyard and pools by

throwing paper and plastic disposable items in the trash so they don’t find their way into our shrubs and plants. We also appreciate that you bring empty pitchers, condiment containers and utensils back into the pub.

NINE HOLE WOMEN’S GOLF AWESOME DAY FOR 9-HOLE WOMEN’S MEMBER-GUEST ALOHA EVENT Members have enjoyed the beautiful ‘spring’ weather by getting out on the course as often as possible, and there has been great member participation for all of the league events, with signup sheets filling up quickly.

The Member-Guest event, postponed for two years due to COVID, was held March 10, with maximum participation. It was wonderful to have guests from other leagues and other clubs join us again. Special thanks go to Debby Taylor, Tournament Chair, for arranging play for this event. A luncheon was held after play - the room decorated with an Aloha tropical theme. Sharon’s “Island Punch,” always a hit, helped welcome everyone to a menu of various specialty sandwiches and fruit salad, topped off with a Hawaiian Dream Pudding. Helping the Social Committee were Jim Ashe, Steve Gove, and Floyd Light – all wearing Hawaiian shirts of course.

and efforts building cribbing pieces for our equipment room. What is cribbing you ask.

Cribbing is ‘a temporary wooden structure used to support heavy objects during search and rescue.’ The proper use of cribbing is one of the rescue techniques taught during the CERT training classes. Should a heavy object fall on someone, in order to lift it without harming them, these blocks are stacked in an organized manner to raise the object before pulling them out. There are specific parameters for building proper cribbing boards and Mark has taken the time to construct a set for Del Tura.

In conjunction with the HOA, CERT will be co-hosting the April 9th Pancake Breakfast in the Starlight Ballroom. Please purchase tickets.

A great breakfast will be served, and you will be able to meet many of our Del Tura community CERT volunteers. Please see the flyer in this issue of the Tower for event details. Funds raised from this event will go toward the purchase of a new industrial grade metal wagon to transport the cribbing kit mentioned above.

In February Del Tura hosted CERT training classes for our residents as well as residents of nearby communities. 15 hours of instruction are necessary to officially become a recognized CERT member through FEMA. The 5-day course lead by the North Fort Myers Fire Department was well attended. We are proud to announce that Del Tura currently has a team of twentyseven certified community members who are trained and willing to step up in case of an emergency.

Bertie Dugo, what can I say? One year ago, the Del Tura Community Response Team had dissolved. Bertie started building the team with three certified members. In this past year she has recruited new members, inventoried existing equipment, helped to raise funds for new equipment, and served as our team leader. Bertie volunteers all this time to provide a service for the Del Tura community.

If Dogs Could Talk

By Gina’s owner, Audry Hopcia I’m a cute little white Maltese Yorkie. I’ve recently been voted Queen of the Del Tura Small Dog Park. In case you wondered, there’s also a Del Tura Big Dog Park, but we ladies – and an occasional gentleman -- want nothing to do with those big ruffians from across the tracks, er, I mean from the other side of the fence.

I’ve made lots of friends here, which is very easy to do. A couple of my best “buddies” are Cam, (he likes to run around); Fizzie, (she likes to lie around); Schmotchie, (she’s an English sheep herder, and tries to herd us around); Belle, (she thinks she’s the best-looking dog in the place – and I think she is – after me.) and Tinker Bell, (she’s real snooty and doesn’t really talk to any of us...too bad for her).

Our ‘Guardians’ - if that’s what they’re supposed to be called – don’t do much but sit around and talk. None of us know what they talk about but occasionally, when someone tells a joke, they make a terrible racket. We all look at each other and smirk. They probably wish they were having as great a time as we are.

Will your money last as long as you do?

We all hope for long, healthy lives. But there’s a serious “side effect” of longevity – the possibility of outliving our money.

How can you help prevent this?

It’s useful to know the seriousness of the threat. Consider this: About 41% of all U.S. homes in which the head of the household is between 35 and 64 are projected to run short of money in retirement, according to the Employee Benefit Research Institute.

While this statistic indicates a cause for concern, it certainly doesn’t mean that you are necessarily headed for trouble – because there’s a lot you can do to help build and manage enough resources to last a lifetime. Here are a few suggestions: • Consider your estimated longevity. On average, a 65-year-old man can expect to live another 17 years, while a 65-year-old woman can anticipate about 20 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Of course, you’ll want to take into account your health and family history of longevity to arrive at a reasonable estimate. You can then use this figure to help determine how much money you’ll eventually need.

To play it safe, you might even want to try to build an income stream that can last beyond your estimated lifespan, possibly up to age 90.

• Don’t overlook health care costs. When budgeting for retirement, allow enough for your health care expenses, which can be considerable. Even with Medicare, you can expect to spend anywhere from $4,500 to $6,500 per year, per person, for traditional medical costs.

Also, you may want to prepare for two to three years of long-term care expenses, which currently range from about $50,000 per year for home health care to over $100,000 per year for a private room in a nursing home.

• Keep building assets for retirement. While you’re working, constantly try to put away as much money as possible for your retirement years. Each year your salary goes up, increase your contributions to your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan.

You may also want to contribute to an IRA, depending on your goals. And within your retirement savings, make sure you devote a reasonable percentage of your investment dollars to growth-oriented vehicles that align with your goals and risk tolerance.

• Seek out sources of guaranteed income. As a retiree, you will receive Social Security benefits – and the longer you wait before claiming them, the bigger your monthly checks will be. But you might also consider investments that can provide a source of income you can’t outlive, such as annuities.

• Revisit your strategy before you retire. As you near retirement, you may want to review your investment strategy, possibly adjusting your risk level so that your portfolio would be somewhat less susceptible to market volatility.

This is also a good time to review your spending needs in retirement.

• Maintain a reasonable withdrawal rate. Once you are retired, you’ll likely need to start withdrawing from your 401(k), IRA and other investment accounts. To avoid taking out too much money too early in your retirement, you’ll need to set a reasonable, sustainable withdrawal rate based on your assets, age and retirement lifestyle. A financial advisor can help you determine an appropriate rate.

It will take dedication and determination to help ensure your money doesn’t run out during your lifetime.

But you’d probably agree that it’s well worth the effort.

FISH Need a Little Help FISH can certainly tell that COVID-19 is slowing down. We have had seventeen calls for drivers to take our residents to appointments.

That is just for this month alone. And we have had thirty-seven calls for medical equipment!

That is amazing!

Because of the thirty-seven calls we have had to replace/add to some equipment. We have purchased three wheelchairs (and had one donated), two knee walkers, three 4-wheel walkers and three 3-wheel walkers. We have a new ice machine to use after surgery (very good for shoulders) and a machine that pulses softly on broken bones to help simulate blood flow.

Add to the other equipment we have such as potty chairs, shower chairs, canes, and crutches.

When a resident borrows a piece of medical equipment we never ask, “When are you going to return this item?” Our answer is always, “You may keep it as long as you need it.” Just call our FISH line (239-997-3474) and leave a message.

The messages are checked in the morning and in the afternoon.

Before COVID-19, each week at Coffee people would walk by the FISH table and drop

off a check for $10, $20, or $25 as a contribution to us. Since we have begun Coffee again in the Starlight Ballroom, almost no one has donated.

We do have three people who donate each year, and our gratitude goes out to them; however, it seems that many people have forgotten us. We would never ask the residents who need a ride or the residents who need medical equipment to pay for our services, so I am asking on behalf of FISH to please remember we do need funds to be able to meet the needs of our community.

Please consider giving a little to a wonderful organization right here in Del Tura, and THANK YOU to those residents who have contributed.

WANTING TO PLAN AN EVENT IN DEL TURA

HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT ADVERTISING YOUR EVENT Whether you are a member of one of the many committees, groups or clubs in Del Tura or just someone who wants to plan their own event, the following is some information you need regarding “getting the word” out. This article only addresses the publication of the information about your event and doesn’t include the procedures for booking a room, becoming HOA sponsored or approved, etc. Booking space must be done through the HOA office and procedures for becoming HOA sponsored or approved can be obtained from the HOA Board.

Please note, not all events must be HOA sponsored or approved, however, if you want to advertise your event you must follow the procedures.

So, you’ve got your date and location, now what?

More than likely, you’d like to get the word out about the event. There are various modes of communication to help you do that. The first step should be to create a flier to advertise your event. Last month’s Tower included an article on Artwork Requirements. The

same information can be found on the HOA website under Publication Standards, as well as a list of people who are willing to help you create your flier should you need assistance.

Once a flier has been created, proofread, and approved by the committee/group/club chair you can submit the flier for publication in the Tower, on the Del Tura Website, on the Del Tura Official Facebook page and/or on the electronic sign at the entrance to Del Tura. To be put on the electronic sign the event must be one that all residents are eligible to attend if they so choose. To be included on the HOA Official Facebook page your event must be either HOA approved or sponsored.

In the Artwork Requirements document mentioned at the beginning of this article you will find timelines for submitting information, but that info is worth repeating here: • Approved artwork (fliers) needs to be submitted at least 5 weeks in advance of the event.

• 5 weeks is required to give proper notification of ticket sale dates.

• Slides will generally be available on the electronic sign for 30 days which gives time for ticket sales and event notification.

• If the flier is to be submitted to the Tower, it must be submitted by the 10th of the month for publication the following month (i.e., if submitted by April 10th it will be included in the May issue.)

Please note that under Publication Standards on the Del Tura Website are guidelines for submission of material for publication on the website and/or the electronic sign. Basically, the guidelines give you an idea of the type of information you should include with your submission whether its directly on the flier or to be submitted without a flier.

Hopefully this information will help you when it comes time to advertise your event!

TOWER NEWSPAPER When can I expect to receive my monthly TOWER NEWSPAPER? The Tower is scheduled to be delivered to the HOA office on the last Friday of the month. The papers are then divided into routes for distribution by the 46 volunteers.

These volunteers have until Monday evening to deliver them. If you have not received your paper by Tuesday morning you should call the distribution team and notify them. You will not receive a Tower unless your HOA Membership dues are paid for the current year.

DEL TURA MEN’S GOLF ASSOCIATION The annual Del Tura Men’s Golf Association Member/Guest Tournament was held on March 5th and 6th.Thirty-eight teams participated. Day one competition was a two-man, better ball format. On day two the format was aggregate - the total of both scores minus the total handicap of both players. In addition, there was a nine-hole scramble for the wives of the members and

their guests. A luncheon for all players was held in the Courtyard. Saturday’s dinner was catered by Longhorn Steakhouse and was a great success.

Beginners to Advanced continue to be welcomed at Open Tennis on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8:00 am to 10:00 am, no partners necessary.

Tennis courts 1-4 are situated beside the North Pool. Die-hard players play through the summer, so don’t hesitate to come and play in the heat.

Our Spring Friendship Tournament was held on Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13. It was a success with 32 participants. Congratulations to all for a great show of friendship and sportsmanship.

The tennis association held 4 clinics this season focusing on drills, tactics and improving speed and resilience. They were well received. More to come next spring.

This will probably be our last letter for a few months because last month the HOA-sponsored bingo ended for the rest of the summer and won’t start up again until sometime in October.

However, we are pretty sure that the smaller version of bingo, like the Monday morning bingo, will take its place as it did this past summer.

We had another good season of bingo every Thursday night with big crowds. Lots of nice, larger pots were won by those lucky people who won them; I’m sure you know who you are as you read this article. We also hope that everyone had fun and enjoyed those nights off up at our clubhouse in the main ballroom where bingo is held.

Now that big bingo has ended, we would like to thank all those wonderful people who were with us on this team because without you, we would not have been able to do this. They are Karen Rivet, Ruth Ann Lugten, Liz Pontiatowski, Ed and Nancy Fries, Joe Mustari, Jane Sheaffer, Janet DeCosmo, Barry Green and Allison Rosen. Hopefully I got all the names spelled correctly and didn’t forget anyone. Also, thanks to Cindy Brinton who is in charge of the large outside electronic board who kept our updates posted out on that board, and Art Keen who had to come up every Thursday night to open the sound room and make sure the sound equipment was available and working correctly before we started. He then had to come back when we were done to put it all away again and lock the sound room. Also, a very BIG thank you for those of you who stayed to help us clean up and get all the equipment and stuff we use put away so that we didn’t have to do it all by ourselves: Bobbi Pett, Tim Brown, Carole Fleischhacker, Sue Frost, Bonnie Carroll and Gina Scott. Hopefully, we didn’t forget anyone. That help was very much appreciated. Again, thank you all.

We look forward to seeing you all again in October when, hopefully, we will be able to run those bingo games again so we can all enjoy some fun and win some money playing bingo on Thursday nights. Hope you all have an enjoyable and safe summer. ~ Jack & Janet

PICKLEBALL FUN Hello friends, In this edition of pickleball info we are going to start learning some terms of the game. The best thing you can do to help learn the game is to first watch it on YouTube. Watching it first will help give you an idea about how the game is played and help you understand some of the unique rules.

First let’s start with some terms. There are many terms, but for now let’s just touch on a few.

Baseline - the line at the back of the court (22’ back from the net on both sides.)

Centerline - the line that divides the court on each side in half (extends from non-volley zone to baseline.)

Kitchen - non-volley zone (the ball can not be hit in the air while standing in this zone, contact with the ball while standing in this zone can only be made after the ball has bounced in this zone.)

Cross-court - the court diagonally opposite your court side.

Doubles - game played with 4 people (2 on each side.)

Singles - one person on each side.

Dink shot - a soft shot that goes just over the net landing in the opposing sides non-volley zone.

Drop Shot - a shot designed to take the speed off the ball and return it short just over the net Foot fault - touching the baseline on a serve.

Pickled - scoring 0 points in a game.

Poach - crossing over into your partner’s side of the court to hit a shot.

Rally - continuous play from the serve till the play ends.

This is just a start on some terms. Next month we will go over a few more terms and hopefully begin the “start” of playing pickleball.

REFLECTIONS “My Heartfelt Circle of Friends” As we go through our early lives friendships are always within close distance, often made as we enter school and in our neighborhoods. Very seldom did we go beyond the parameters of home and school. The number of friends grew as we joined activities, such as scout organizations, or sports teams. The total may have varied depending a lot on how introverted or extroverted you may have been during those early years. How well I remember the excitement of our children when they came home from school on the very first day. They couldn’t wait to tell me how many friends they made that day! I was just as excited as they were! “Mommy, I have a new friend! I can’t wait to see my new friends tomorrow!” Everyone was their friend! Unfortunately, they would eventually realize that many friendships could not be forever. It’s a lesson that we all learned as we went through the different stages of our lives.

“People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime…and some enter your heart and stay forever.”

Eventually we realized that as the years passed we did make many friends and many of those friendships followed us throughout the different phases of our lives. Some of those early friends actually became lifetime friendships, and are now part of our family. Although many of us are blessed with a large circle of friends in our lives there are few that follow us through the golden years. So many special people… so many beautiful memories, gone now from us but always alive within our minds and hearts. Fortunately, if we’re lucky we still have some of these friends with us, but only a few can be considered “center of the heart” friendships, the ones that enter our hearts and stay a lifetime. Believe me I have cherished all of my friendships; they have taught me many different lessons for many different reasons. I have never regretted any of them!

As we get older our circle of friends are so important to us for so many reasons. Let’s face it even at this stage of our lives we still have issues that need being addressed, maybe more than we would like. If you’re a male, you may be lucky to have a special group of friends that you can be yourself with and solve some of these issues by letting your hair down (if you’re lucky enough to still have some…just a little humor) with your buddies. Well it’s the same with women. We need our girlfriends, too! They are our support systems that we definitely cannot do without!!

These heartfelt friends will always be at the inner core of your heart. They are there for the good times and the not so good times in your life. They give of themselves without expectation, opening their hearts and ears during those much needed moments… whether it’s to cheer you up or cheer you on. The best part is that you can be you, you can be a little crazy, be relaxed, laugh

Even hours after you leave them you find yourself giggling over something silly that was said earlier.

It’s all good!

Let’s face it there are times in our lives that we can’t always go it alone even though we think we can. Most of us stubbornly insist we don’t need anyone…even when we know that is not true. We all have friends that miraculously bring us out of the darkest moments of our lives. Our friends are there for us …reach out…let them help.

“There are some people in life that make you laugh a little louder, smile a little bigger and live just a little better.”

I will always treasure your friendships, my heartfelt friends. You are all very special to me for so many reasons. I am truly blessed.

I would like to dedicate this article to three of these treasured friends. I probably could write a book about each of them… it just might make a list. Not sure which one that would be yet…

Hmmm?

Let me tell you about three special people that I know I can’t do without. I didn’t meet these crazy friends until we moved here to Del Tura almost nineteen years ago. They have brightened my life in so many ways by bringing so much sunshine and laughter into my life on many occasions. Each of them shares so many gifts and they don’t even realize that they are blessed with these gifts.

Their names are Shelley, Juliette, and Princess (all names they chose for themselves). I know… you kind of get an idea why there’s never a dull moment with these three. They made me promise that if I ever wrote anything about them that I could not use their given names.

We don’t get together very often but when we do it’s like our conversations never skip a beat. Right from the beginning of our outings it’s continuous laughter. How we can find humor in almost anything amazes me.

It’s usually Shelley that begins the chaotic fun with her infectious laugh and lighthearted humor.

Then Juliette will add an additional comment in her own serious style, followed by Princess who by now has difficulty speaking between the laughter and the tears flowing down her cheeks.

Sometimes it’s hard to figure out where the story began, or even if it has an end? It doesn’t matter though because the most important thing is how it all makes us feel! Each of these ladies is blessed with a sense of humor that makes any situation seem a whole lot lighter.

“It’s beautiful to know no matter where I am in life…there are these women that truly get me, love me, support me. Their energy gives me the feeling that I can truly be myself, be totally relaxed and not hold back.

I love these ladies! Who needs a shrink when you can celebrate this kind of friendship?”

By Michael Johnson We left off in the summer of 1965....

Let’s move back from August of that year to June, the end of June. We had traveled from New York to Montana on our way to California. A visit to Glacier National Park was something we thought would be enjoyable. Perhaps we could find temporary employment there and replenish our dwindling money supply enough to continue our journey. We entered the park and were immediately impressed with the enormity of the area. We found a campsite and settled down for the evening. We needed to discuss a plan of action for gaining employment.

It was decided that our lack of funds necessitated our taking whatever jobs we were offered. Glacier National Park had a very large hotel and an almost comparable sized building for employees to stay while they worked during the summer. We discovered there were dozens and dozens of college aged employees working there and many were females!! This was going to be quite an adventure.

John and I headed to the employment office where we were greeted by a woman dressed in western attire, including cowboy boots and a cowboy hat. She asked if we had experience with horses. We quickly glanced at each other and simultaneously nodded. (Fortunately, we had left our New York license-plated vehicle at the campsite, otherwise she may have questioned our honesty.

Nonetheless, we were hired as “trail-riders”. We were to accompany vacationers who were going out on horseback, traversing the park. We were given maps of Glacier National Park and told to report to the coral in the morning.

Back at the campsite John and I couldn’t believe our good fortune in landing jobs. At the same time, we were VERY apprehensive about what we were undertaking. The next morning, bright and early, we were at the coral, awaiting instructions. Well, it wasn’t long before John and I had received a brief course in what exactly trail-riders did. A party of about ten vacationers assembled, lined up on horseback and were led off on a trail-riding adventure. The good news is the horses knew what was expected of them and could have taken these tourists out blindfolded!! The bad news was my horse, Buster, could meander along rock-lined, dried-up riverbeds, stepping over fallen logs, uneven ground, and duck under low-lying branches, but, when faced with flat ground, fell.

Not just stumbled....fell. This was embarrassing. There were three trail-riders assigned to each group of vacationers, one leading the group, one in the middle and one at the end. Buster and I were at the end. I was concerned we would be left behind or, worse, cause the group to become more involved with Buster’s apparent lack of ability to keep up and less on their enjoyment of the ride.

We completed our journey, thankfully. Buster was returned to the barn. I told my supervisor of the day’s experience and suggested perhaps Buster was no longer suited to the job. My supervisor was of the same opinion, but of me, not Buster.

The next day I was assigned to the Stagecoach. Here tourists could experience a stagecoach ride along a wide and clear dirt road. And I was to sit next to the driver and help with passengers and horses as needed. This seemed more suited to my ability.

FROM THE CREATIVE WRITERS WORKSHOP Introduction: Our Creative Writers Workshop is continuing to do well.

I thank our members for braving the elements through one another cold February gathering under the banyan tree.

Hopefully warmer days will now carry us forward.

Just a reminder: For those of you who like to write, or who would like to try, please consider our group. We are meeting on Mondays (twice a month when possible), and will continue to meet at the banyan tree at 11 AM. You can call or email me. My home phone (with an answering machine) is 239-599-4631. My email address is ndavy01@ gmail.com. You’ll need to provide me with your name, your email address, and your cell phone number. I will text everyone with a reminder before each meeting, and ask for confirmation of how many will attend. I am planning on 4/11 and 4/25 at 11 AM for our April dates. Here’s a challenge from a recent gathering and some responses to it: Challenge Six: A Verbal Portrait This is in keeping with the Letter journal, in that it focuses on someone you have or have had some kind of relationship with. I’d like you to think back over your life and settle on a person who has impacted you or inspired you in a powerful way. Try to write a poem or a freestyle article, whichever you are more readily drawn to, that will paint with your words how you feel about that person.

Example: Dad by N. Davy (from my books, Tears From My Pen and Dreaming In Color) He lost his life the day she died All meaning now is gone Now he shrinks from the outside world And keeps the curtains drawn.

His sparkling eyes are empty now Gone is the toothy grin His shuffle, once a buoyant step, Confirms the grief within.

His mind lives now in yesterdays Bright memories they shared And every tear-filled night he asks Why her life wasn’t spared.

So silent now, his empty house Becomes his albatross Each room a grim reminder Of how very much he lost.

If I could only have one wish I’d take his pain away, And make it easier to face Each long and lonely day.

I’d trade all worldly goods for just One ordinary smile, For it would mean that much to see Him happy for a while.

God, give him strength and courage To take one step at a time.

Please make him want to live again; To make that uphill climb.

For Dad, who loved so selflessly Grant now this one request A small measure of happiness ‘Till he, too, is laid to rest.

Challenge Six: A Verbal Portrait A Quiet Adventurer by Maureen Monroy I would like you to know a bit about my Aunt Catherine.

Catherine was a tiny woman. Not quite 4’10”, with a quiet disposition. She smelled of Ponds Night Cream and cinnamon candies. She dressed neatly – always in A-line skirts, coordinating blouses and low pumps. Her nails were neat and buffed. She was an observer and a listener by nature. Yet Catherine led the most adventurous life of anyone I have known. As a nurse in the late 1920’s Catherine headed to Oregon where she worked in rural areas. This was the heyday of the American Public Health System. She loved the West – the mountains and the openness.

When WWII began Catherine became an Army nurse and served in Italy. She became engaged to a British pilot, who was killed in action. Catherine never married. As WWII ended, Catherine went with General MacArthur into the occupation of Japan. She had so many stories of the beautiful Japanese country and people.

My older sister was born in 1952, with a birth weight of 3 lbs., which quickly reduced another 4 ounces. In the early 1950’s, few Americans attempted overseas air travel. But Catherine quietly hopped a plane to France and returned with Holy Water from Lourdes. She and my sister had a long and loving friendship.

Catherine continued to travel in her later years. In 1972 I received a note from Catherine – mailed from the Philippines. I had just started college. She had written the note while visiting a veteran Army nurse who lived in China. For perspective, Catherine was in China at the time of President Nixon’s historical trip to China.

In retrospect I realize it is odd that I never asked her how she got into China – I was so used to Catherine doing whatever she set her mind to. Catherine was interested in people – her friends from Oregon, Europe, and Japan, as well as her young nieces and nephews. Her quiet nature gave her the time to focus on each of us.

Catherine was in and out of our lives – never with fanfare, but she was always a part of our lives. She would quietly share some of her adventures, but she was most interested in listening to our experiences and dreams.

Catherine would have been pleased to hear your stories.

Challenge Six: A Verbal Portrait “My Granny Rose” by Dianne Roderick My Granny, how I loved her so I close my eyes and I’m five again looking up into the beautiful blue eyes of this gentle, strong, loving woman.

Granny Rose, a rare jewel that brought sparkle to my day, listener, teacher, grandmother, friend. A Blessing that I was thankful to have and will love and cherish until the end.

Granny loved to connect with nature. Whether it was gardening, or collecting shells. She took to the earth like a fish to water. Echoing feelings of contentment that all was well.

We would walk up to her rose garden path hand and hand laughing and singing… we had so much fun.

Surrounded by the fragrant smell of the roses and the beauty of their colors. We spent so many treasured moments in the sun.

Challenge Six: A Verbal Portrait My Friend Finn by Joan Kachel She sits across the table from me staring at her flatbread with a puzzled look on her face; not certain of what it is or how to eat it. She cuts a piece of the topping and puts the morsel in her mouth. Now she looks more content, as if she solved a mystery.

Long ago, she was my Maid of Honor at my wedding.

Neighbors since we were toddlers, she became my “big sister” and mentor.

Finn was a cheerful lady who always seemed at peace and upbeat. She became head of the Math Department, then head of B.O.C.E.S., and then Acting Superintendent of the school district she lived in.

A few months ago she was rattled when she couldn’t make change when she was in a store. Instead of days filled with church activities, bridge, dinner shows, etc., Finn’s days were recently spent by sitting on her couch and playing with her dog.

At our last visit to her home, Finn kept emphasizing, “Come back SOON!” At that time, making her own breakfast by putting milk and cereal in a bowl was a frustrating and difficult task.

Now Finn is in a facility that takes care of all that for her. We never mention her dog Jack, because she does not know she had a dog that she loved so dearly. She wants to know when she’s going home but does like talking to the other people where she is. The cheerful brightness of Finn does not shine as brightly, as her true self is fading.

Challenge Six: A Verbal Portrait My Family by Cindy Swisher Young, shy, and somewhat shattered, I convinced myself he was what drew me in, but truth be told, it was all of you. Don’t get me wrong; I love him heart and soul, but you are a part of who he is, and you sealed the deal.

Without you, who knows what may have been. You were what I always wanted; what I didn’t know I was looking for. Loud, boisterous, full of hugs, love, and laughter. You welcomed me without question.

He loved me; so you did, too. No pretense, no judgment.

Your warmth was unconditional. At first, I kept you at arm’s length, afraid. After all, I grew up waiting for the other shoe to drop. And drop it always did. There were some peaceful days, but chaos followed as sure as the dawn.

Still, the silence was almost worse. It was so thick at times it clung to me like a blanket, and I melted into its folds, unseen and unknown. It was different with you; you saw me; you knew me. I became a part of you; a part of your collective story. Thank you.

Thank you from a broken child, thank you from the new mother you took under your wing.

Thank you from who I am now. I may not share your DNA, but I am part of your history.

You are my friends, my family.
