WELCOME NEW RESIDENTS A warm welcome to the following new residents of Tara Woods. We hope to see you at our next New Residents Orientation on Saturday, March 6th, at 10:00 AM in the Meeting Room of the Clubhouse.

Suzanne and Clint Boyer Suzanne and Clint reside part-time on Lot #76, 19708 Charleston Circle. They are from Texas and Illinois. Both still work, she as a tech for Comcast, and he as a handyman, owning his own business. They have five children and ten grandchildren. Suzanne likes furniture building as well as swimming, reading and cruising, while Clint enjoys watching ice hockey and traveling.

Suzi and Billy Brandt Suzi and Billy are Florida natives, hailing from Cape Coral. They live on Lot #246, 2616 Macon Circle. Suzi retired as the manager of the Goodwill store on Pine Island and Billy continues working in sales. They have one child. Suzi enjoys reading books and is learning ceramics, and Billy plays the drums for fun.

Cookie Brunner Cookie hails from the Bronx, New York, and lives on Lot #625, 19338 Amelia Road. She is a full-time resident here at Tara Woods. Cookie still works several days each week as manager of a gift shop in Matlacha and on Sundays at Cayo Costa State Park. She likes to go out on her kayak and plays Mahjong as well as Rummy, Hand and Foot and 3-13.

Renee Craig and Doug Lewis Renee and Craig are part-time residents at Lot #682, 19296 Potomac Circle. They hail from New Jersey. Renee works as a nurse at Virtua Hospital and Doug owns Audobon Cesco, an air conditioning and heating company. They have two children and four grandchildren.

They both enjoy boating and hot rods. Doug runs a hot rod club and enjoys antique cars as well.

Nannette Hansen and Mark Turner Nannette and Mark live on Lot #24, 19635 Charleston Circle. Originally from New York and Colorado, they are full-time residents.

Both are still working, Nannette as a vet technician and Mark as the owner of his own construction company. They have one child.

Both enjoy boating, fishing, beaching and dancing, while Nannette also likes taking care of dogs.

Sandy and Hank Kaczmarczyk Sandy and Hank Kacz ([pronounced Kas] as they prefer to be called), live full-time on Lot #696, 19240 Potomac Circle. They hail from Delaware and lived in Cape Coral for a time.

Both are still working, Hank in kitchen design for Lowe’s and Sandy as an administrative assistant. They have three children and five grandchildren. Sandy enjoys quilting, line dancing and aerobics, and Hank likes to play his guitar for fun in his free time.

Lori Melani Lori Melani is a full-time resident at Lot #160, 19459 Charleston Circle. She is originally from Virginia and is retired from sales as a product demonstrator. She has two children and four grandchildren. Lori enjoys her dog and decorating her house.

Jean & Dick Resh Jean and Dick Resh Jean and Dick live at Lot #419, 19679 Pandora Circle. They are part-time residents from Pennsylvania. Jean retired from working at home and Dick retired as a home improvement contractor. They have three children and six grandchildren. Jean likes to go swimming, play bocce and go beaching, while Dick enjoys volleyball, bocce, fishing and shuffleboard as well as riding their motorcycle.

FMO NEWS: TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS Wanted. The FMO is looking for someone to assume the position of President of District 7 and includes Charlotte, Lee, Collier and Hendry Counties. The majority of meetings are held in Lee County.

KITCHEN HELP NEEDED The Kitchen Committee is looking for four to six people to join the Committee as Saturday Morning Coffee hosts during the summer from May thru October. The position requires that you set up the Coffee the Friday before, pick up the donuts, bagels and rolls at Publix Saturday morning, serve the guests and clean up after.

Your services would be needed one Saturday each month.

Whether you are new or have lived here

for years, this is a great opportunity to greet old friends and get to know your new Tara Woods neighbors, while doing a needed and appreciated service for the community.

Hi everyone. Welcome to our new residents and certainly to all our snowbirds and year-round residents.

So, what is this Help thing???? Well, it is a twofold request.

First is that we are currently looking for a compassionate, empathetic, and caring individual with leadership skills to chair our Neighborhood Watch Committee. Many thanks to our past chairman Norm Wing for his past service. Norm has decided to move on, and we are looking for someone to replace him. It is a great opportunity for someone to work with our Homeowners Association and our strong dedicated team of volunteers in helping to keep our community safe.

The primary purpose of the group is to help educate the community with the rules and regulations of Tara Woods. You received a copy of them when you moved into your home. If you are like most of us that document probably got filed away unread. So, the purpose of our group is to educate the community through articles like this in The Columns, through speaking at Saturday Morning Coffee, or at TWHA meetings where we might review the rules and regulations. The committee is not the park police

and is instructed to be non-confrontational. Their purpose in the community is to recognize safety issues and report such things as streetlights out, potholes, etc. Although the Park Manager and her crew do a good job in recognizing the problems, the committee acts as extra eyes to help keep this community safe and aid the Park Manager as she tries to keep everything running smoothly. The committee also runs the Silver Alert program which helps in finding those folks who might be impaired and who have wandered off their property.

Please respond to Peter Krilivsky, the TWHA liaison to the Neighborhood Watch Committee at 603-493-8891 if you would like more information regarding the position of Committee Chair and also if you would like to join the group.

The second HELP is to all of you. We ask that you comply with the rules stating that both carts and cars adhere to the 20 MPH speed limit in the park, and by obeying stop signs. Please pick up after your dogs and keep them on leashes (both cats and dogs). We have a great dog park for them to run and play and that is where they could be let loose.

Parking on your lawns is a no-no. If you need extra parking please use the overflow parking lots. Also, please make sure your carts and cars have a readable

Tara Woods ID sticker so that in the event of theft your vehicles could be identified.

In addition to the above, please wear reflective clothes if you are walking when it is dark. There have been several close calls which could have resulted in serious injury or worse. In the same vain, drivers, please comply to the rules regarding the speed and no rolling stops at the stop signs. It becomes more difficult, as we age, to see clearly especially at dusk.

Lastly, we here in Tara Woods are a family, and assuming we all have great relationships with our family, we would like to think we all have each other’s back. You may have a neighbor who may need some extra help with chores or shopping, or maybe even taking care of the landscaping. Here is an opportunity to be a great neighbor and help if you can, or at the very least let your Board of Directors or Neighborhood Watch Committee know of the needs.

We are your extended family!!

In closing, please remember the “TWO HELPS” that have been outlined here, and thanks in advance for your help and adherence to the rules and regulations of the community.

NEW LIBRARY HOURS Effective Monday, February 22nd, the Library in the Clubhouse will be open the following days and hours:

Mondays 10:00 AM to NOON Thursdays 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM Saturdays 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM

No need to call, no need for reservations.

Your Tara Woods Homeowners Association and Hometown America have agreed to these hours for the convenience of all residents. All normal safety protocols will be followed.

If you wish to go to the library outside these hours it will be necessary to call the office to schedule an appointment.

TARA WOODS COMPUTER CLUB The Tara Woods Computer Club has suspended its meetings since the start of the COVID restrictions in March 2020. These meetings will resume on the first Thursday of the first month that the Clubhouse is open. Free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods will be held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee.

The first and third Thursday of each month are devoted to Computer Basics.

This is a complete course on how to use your computer but may have to be shortened to finish by the end of the season. The second and fourth Thursday are reserved for General subjects and cover a single specific topic of interest. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. We will spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered will always be posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. You can attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it.

I have continued to provide my normal services in the park. I give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen...March is here, and believe it or not so is COVID-19 – still here, still involved in our lives. ARGH! I am so over this! I know, calm down and think positive.

On a happier note, the Entertainers are putting on a play this month, in case you haven’t heard. If you haven’t gotten a seat assigned yet, check with me, Pat Dunning, at Saturday Morning Coffee or call, text or email me to see if there are any available. Hopefully, you will be one of the lucky ones to nab a seat at one of the three performances before they are sold out. Following the protocol of the pandemic, we are allowed thirty-six people per performance. See the ad for our play in another part of this issue of The Columns for particulars.

Now, for looking into a “crystal ball” part of my article:

So, Ladies and Gentlemen... here we are fifteen days into March, and I know that if you got to be in the audience for our play this year, you thoroughly enjoyed yourself – being transported back to the days of listening to the radio with the family. It was fun putting on these two “Fibber McGee and Molly” plays for Tara Woods. I want to thank all of those people who helped put together this year’s performance; without the great volunteers who live and play in our community, events like our play would not happen – thank you. Also, a thank you for coming to one of our performances. The actors appreciate your support, as do the rest of the Entertainers.

For those who know about The Columns this is a refresher; for those who do not – the writers of articles for The Columns must write their article about a month before publication. This means for this event, our play, we are actually still in rehearsal, but the article must be submitted in order to be printed and ready for you to read on March 1st. This explains using my

crystal ball and seeing into the future.

As to the future, our plans are to put on the play in 2022 that was supposed to be performed in 2020 – She was only marginally modest. We are hoping that this life of restrictions will be behind us like a very bad dream by the end of this year. Please keep your fingers crossed.

LUNCH WITH AN 85-YEAR OLD One day I had lunch with some old friends. Jim, a short, balding golfer type, about eighty-five years old, came along with them; all in all, it was a pleasant bunch.

When the menus were presented, my friends and I ordered salads, sandwiches, and soups, except for Jim who said, “A large piece of home-made apple pie, heated please.” I wasn’t sure my ears heard him right, and the others were aghast, When Jim continued, completely unabashed...”along with two large scoops of vanilla ice cream.”

We tried to act quite nonchalant, as if people did this all the time, but when our orders were brought out, I didn’t enjoy eating mine. I couldn’t take my eyes off of Jim as I watched him savoring each bite of his pie a la mode. The other guys just grinned in disbelief as they silently ate their lunches.

The next time I went out to eat, I called Jim and invited him to join me. I lunched on a white meat tuna sandwich, while he ordered a chocolate parfait. Since I was chuckling, he wanted to know if he amused me. I answered, “Yes, you certainly do, but you also

confuse me. How come you always order such rich desserts, while I feel like I must be sensible in my food choices?”

He laughed and said, “I’m tasting all that is possible for me to taste. I try to eat the food I need and do the things I should in order to stay healthy, but life’s too short, my friend. I hate missing out on something good. This year I realized how old I was. (He grinned) I’ve never been this old before, so, while I’m still here, I’ve decided it’s time to try all those things that, for years, I’ve been ignoring.”

He continued, “I haven’t smelled all the flowers yet. There are too many trout streams I haven’t fished.

There are more fudge sundaes to wolf down and kites to be flown overhead. There are too many golf courses I haven’t played. I’ve not laughed at all the jokes. I’ve missed a lot of sporting events and potato chips and cokes.”

Be mindful that happiness isn’t based on possessions, power, or prestige, but on relationships with people we like, respect, and enjoy spending time with.

Estate Planning for Blended Families

If you’re in a blended family, you’re already aware of the emotional and financial issues involved in your daily life. But what about the future?

When it’s time to do your estate planning – and it’s never too soon for that – you’ll need to be aware of the entanglements and complexities that can get in the way of your vision for leaving the legacy you desire.

You can take comfort in knowing that you’re far from alone. More than half of married or cohabiting couples with at least one living parent, or parent-in-law, and at least one adult child, have a “step-kin” relationship, according to a study from researchers at the University of Massachusetts and other schools. That’s a lot of estate-planning issues.

Nonetheless, the task does not have to be overwhelming – as long as you put sufficient time and thought into it. Here are some ideas that may help: • Seek fairness – but be flexible. Even in a nonblended family, it’s not always easy to be as equitable as you’d like in your estate plans – too often, someone feels they have been treated unfairly. In a blended family, these problems can be exacerbated: Will biological children feel cheated?

Will stepchildren? Keep this in mind: Fair is not always equal – and equal is not always fair. When deciding how to divide your assets, you’ll need to make some judgment calls after carefully evaluating the needs of all your family members. There’s no guarantee that everyone will be satisfied, but you’ll have done your best.

• Communicate your wishes clearly. When it comes to estate planning, the best surprise is no surprise – and that’s especially true in a blended family. Even if you’re the one creating your estate plans, try to involve other family members – and make your wishes and goals clear.

You don’t have to be specific down to the last dollar, but you should provide a pretty good overall outline.

• Consider establishing a revocable living trust. Everyone’s situation is different, but many blended families find that, when making estate plans, a simple will is not enough. Consequently, you may want to establish a revocable living trust, which gives you much more control than a will when it comes to carrying out your wishes. Plus, because you have transferred your assets to the trust, you are no longer technically the owner of these assets, so there’s no reason for a court to get involved, which means your estate can likely avoid the time-consuming, expensive and very public process of probate.

• Choose the right trustee. If you do set up a living trust, you’ll also need to name a trustee – someone who manages the assets in the trust.

Married couples often serve as co-trustees, but this can result in tensions and disagreements. As an alternative, you can hire a professional trustee – someone with the time, experience and neutrality to make appropriate decisions and who can bring new ideas to the process.

Above all else, make sure you have the right estate-planning team in place. You’ll certainly need to work with an attorney, and you may also want to bring in your tax advisor and financial professional. Estate planning can be complex – especially with a blended family – and you’ll want to make the right moves, right from the start.

TENNIS ASSOCIATION

Because of the continuing precautions being taken due to COVID-19, we have not had our usual monthly Tennis Association Meetings. Our last meeting was February 23rd, 2020; therefore, there is nothing new to report.

MISC. NEWS

As a reminder, we have “open mixed doubles tennis” from 9:00 – 10:30 AM every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday. All skill levels are welcome to join us on the courts. If you have an interest in tennis, stop by the courts and check it out.

Personally, I enjoy this “open” tennis time as you get to play with people who have very different skills. You might play against someone who has a great serve, or a great angle shot, or even a frustrating drop shot (you know who you are!). You have to learn to adapt to everyone’s different tennis style – which makes for an interesting day on the courts.

TWIT

(Tara Woods Inter - Community Tennis) TWIT is played every Thursday morning at 10:30 AM using all four courts. Because we presently have five groups involved in TWIT, one group begins their match at 8:30 AM. The group that starts at 8:30 AM is set up on a rotating basis so each week a different group has that early time slot.

TWIT is designed for intermediate tennis players and is organized and run by Dick Heffron and Mike Renzulli.

I especially enjoy my Thursday morning tennis and want to thank both Dick and Mike for their efforts in running this tennis program.

ROUND ROBINS

The second Round Robin of the 2020-2021 tennis season was held on January 24th.

Only 8 tennis players participated in the event.

We are trying to get more players to come out for the Round Robins. If anyone would like to offer ideas to make the event more attractive to sign up more players, this would be welcomed. Of course, we assume not everyone will agree with any set schedule, but anything that would get more players to sign up would help.

The next Round Robin was scheduled for February 28th. That will leave just one more Round Robin in March for this tennis season.

ACTIVITIES, ACTIVITIES It seems really strange that there won’t be a big St. Patrick’s Day party – again this year.

Let’s hope by March of 2022, we can once again celebrate with a corned beef and cabbage dinner, singing our favorite Irish songs and dancing the night away decked out in our finest green attire.

With any luck, we may even be able to ring in the New Year with whatever the “new” New Year’s party may look like. In the meantime, let’s wear our masks, maintain social distancing, get vaccinated and do our part to eradicate this virus as quickly as possible.

The Board of Directors would like to see you out “Dancing and Singing in the Streets” on Saturday, March 27th. Food tickets are being sold for Pulled Pork or Chicken, and a DJ will be playing dance music, as well as karaoke. This will be held in the Craft Building parking lot on

Shiloh; so, get your food tickets or just come to enjoy the music and get out of the house for a few hours for some fresh air, fun and fellowship.

SHILOH SPEAKS Can’t believe it’s March already. To think, by the time you get this March segment of Shiloh Speaks, we went through 59-60 days this year, which brings us about 306-305 days left in 2021.

YIKES!

As we are all aware, most of us are still calling or trying online to get an appointment to get the COVID-19 vaccine. “BE PATIENT!” So, how many of you got through? Thank goodness as being a fourfooted furry friend, I can get a rabies shot faster than getting vaccinated for this virus and eliminate phone and computer inputs. Somehow, by finally getting through is just like winning the lottery, but it’s a health issue instead. Once again, I stress “BE PATIENT” and “GOOD LUCK”! But somehow, I predict that once we get our COVID-19 vaccination we are all going to wind up getting a yearly shot for this virus, just like the flu vaccine. “WHAT DO YOU THINK?” How did you like last month’s Super Bowl? Did you eat too many snacks or pizza or even chicken wings?

It was good to see we haven’t lost this professional pasttime sport event, but it was close. I hope everyone followed the COVID-19 guidelines though.

Anyway, in this segment of “Shiloh Speaks”, I’ll cover a few highlights in March, so you can be aware, “In like a lion – Out like a Lamb”.

First of all, a reminderthat on Sunday, March 14th, we are going to spring ahead. This means we once again, bringing out our chairs, stepstools, ladders, anything that we may need to reach our clocks (to set them) one hour ahead. “DARN! There goes my EXTRA HOUR OF SLEEP!” Remember last month – on February 2nd, Ground Hog Day? Unfortunately, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, so we have six more weeks of winter.

Somehow, since we live in Florida, like I stated before, we may have a different outlook on his forecast. The sad part for us Floridians, we have the reality of Hurricane Season from June 1st to November 30th, but I don’t want to go into this point at this given moment.

Now, of course, March 17th, St. Patrick’s Day. As years pass from Bailey (who put his paw in the past segments) I took over and I’m “STILL LOOKING” for “LUCKY” the leprechaun, along with that “POT OF GOLD”, at the end of the rainbow, and where do I wind up? At Publix Supermarket – buying my box of LUCKY CHARMS cereal. Oh well, at least they are still magically delicious.

Ah, March is the third month of the year and named after Mars, the Roman “God of War”. In the Julian and Gregorian calendar, it is the second of seven months to have a length of 31 days in the Northern Hemisphere.

AND THEN IT IS WINTER This is right on the nose... read it slowly... I don’t know who wrote it, but I am guessing it was a senior!!!

I first started reading this email and was reading fast until I reached the third sentence.

I stopped and started over, reading slower and thinking about every word.

This email is very thought-provoking. Makes you stop and think.

AND THEN IT IS WINTER You know... time has a way of moving quickly and catching you unaware of the passing years.

It seems just yesterday that I was young, just married and embarking on my new life with my mate.

Yet in a way, it seems like eons ago, and I wonder where all the years went. I know that I lived them all.

I have glimpses of how it was back then and of all my hopes and dreams. But, here it is... the winter of my life and it catches me by surprise... how did I get here so fast? Where did the years go and where did my youth go?

I remember well seeing older people through the years and thinking that those older people were years away from me and that winter was so far off that I could not fathom it or imagine fully what it would be like. But, here it is... my friends are retired and getting grey... they move slower and I see an older person now. Some are in better and some worse shape than me... but, I see the great change... not like the

ones that I remember who were young and vibrant... but, like me, their age is beginning to show, and we are now those older folks that we used to see and never thought we’d be.

Each day now, I find that just getting a shower is a real target for the day! And taking a nap is not a treat anymore... it’s mandatory! Cause if I don’t, on my own free will... I just fall asleep where I sit!

And so... now I enter into this new season of my life unprepared for all the aches and pains and the loss of strength and ability to go and do things that I wish I had done but never did!

But, at least I know, that though the winter has come, and I’m not sure how long it will last...this I know, that when it’s over on this earth... it’s NOT over. A new adventure will begin!

Yes, I have regrets. There are things I wish I hadn’t done... things I should have done, but indeed, there are many things I’m happy to have done. It’s all in a lifetime.

So, if you’re not in your winter yet... let me remind you, that it will be here faster than you think. So, whatever you would like to accomplish in your life, please do it quickly! Don’t put things off too long!

Life goes by quickly. So, do what you can today, as you can never be sure whether this is your winter or not! You have no promise that you will see all the seasons of your life...so, live for today and say all the things that you want your loved ones to remember... and hope that they appreciate and love you for all the things that you have done for them in all the years past!

“Life” is a gift to you. The way you live your life is your gift to those who come after. Make it a fantastic one.

After summer vacation, a teacher asked her your pupils how they spent their holiday away from school.

One child wrote the following: We always used to spend summers with grandma and Grandpa. They used to live in a big brick house, but Grandpa got retarded and moved to Florida,

They go to a building called a wrecked center, but they must have got it fixed because it is all okay now, and do exercises there. There is a swimming pool too where they all jump up and down with hats on.

At their gate, there is a doll house with a little old man sitting in it. He watches all day so nobody can escape. Sometimes they sneak out. They go cruising in their golf carts. Nobody there cooks, they just eat out. And, they eat the same thing every night: Early Birds.

Some of the people can’t get out past the man in the doll house. The ones who do get out, bring food back to the wrecked center and call in pot luck.

My Grandma says that Grandpa worked all his life to earn his retardment and says I should work hard so I can be retarded someday too. When I earn my retardment, I want to be the man in the doll house.

Then I will let people out so they can visit their grandchildren.

ON THE FIRST DAY, GOD CREATED THE DOG On the first day, God created the dog and said, “Sit all day by the door of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For this, I will give you a life span of twenty years.”

But the human said, “Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?”

“Okay,” said God, “You asked for it.”

So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play and enjoy ourselves.

For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our family.

For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the grandchildren.

And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and bark at everyone.

Life has now been explained to you.

MIDWEST CLUB NEWS Yes, Tara Woods, the Midwest Club still exists.

For those of you who are new to the community, this club is for any Tara Woods residents who reside or resided in the Midwestern states.

It also includes any states that do not fit into the category of the Mid-Atlantic States, New York/New Jersey, New England, or Canada.

The purpose of the club is to give people an opportunity to get together at the Clubhouse and socialize once a month. Additionally, the Midwest Club works with various groups in need such as Hearts and Homes for Veterans and the Gabriel House. Additionally, the club may plan a party for the community such as New Year’s Eve. To join the club, just show up at the first meeting of the year. All meetings and activities are posted in the Clubhouse on the bulletin board.

However, this year has been like no other. At this point in time, the Midwest Club remains in limbo, as do so many of the other clubs and activities at Tara Woods. The hope is that as people get vaccinated and “herd immunity” is obtained, the Midwest Club will be able to reconvene in October of 2021. In order for this to occur, the Midwest Club will need volunteers to take over the offices of President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer. The three-year term of

office is complete in April 2021 for the current board. These officer positions can be shared with another person. Remember, many hands make light work. Guidance and assistance will be provided by the current board to make the transition as smooth as possible. If you are interested, please contact Rick or Shelly Lubich, Bobbie Mester, Debbie Polenska or Peggy Gamble.

What to plant

Annuals: Plant heat tolerant annuals for color such as crossandra, gazania, melampodium, and zinnia, that will last into fall.

Bulbs: Plant gladiola corms 6” apart and 4” deep and stake as they grow.

Plant caladiums for a showy tropical display all summer.

Herbs: In addition to their culinary

value, many herbs are ornamental and attract butterflies to the garden.

Vegetables: Warm season crops, such as sweet corn, cucumber, watermelon, and pepper, should be planted now for late spring harvest.

What to do

Trees and shrubs: Prune when new growth begins after the end of the dormant season. To guard next season’s blooms, begin pruning after the last flowers fade but before new buds set.

Mulch: Renew or add mulch in landscape beds to reduce weeds and retain moisture.

Fertilize lawns: If not done in February, fertilize lawns this month.

Pests: Monitor landscape plants for insects, especially for the presence of aphids on tender new growth. Insects become more active during warm weather.
