MEMORIAL DAY PARTY 2018

Friends and neighbors gathered inside and on the Verandah of the beautifully decorated Clubhouse on Memorial Day. Over 100 people joined together to pay tribute to the many men and women who died in service to our country so we all can enjoy our freedoms and lifestyle here in Tara Woods.

Prior to Memorial Day the Tara Woods Homeowners Association replaced the American flag and POW/MIA flag overlooking the gazebo and lake. Janet Daly led a moving prayer honoring our fallen servicemen and women.

A big “thank you” to Bill Black and all the volunteers who came together to put on a memorable and enjoyable party. All present took time to recognize and thank our neighbors who donned the uniform and served our great country.

Two of the veterans honored were from the greatest generation and served in WWII, John D’Amico and James Howard. It was fitting that we all stood and applauded as we listened to a recording of Lee Greenwood singing “God Bless the USA”. ~Lou Dunning

We are working on several projects through the summer

months. Some of these may cause a minor inconvenience to an activity. We are sorry for this and will get things back up and running as quickly as possible. We are working on a better community and appreciate your patience with the processes.

So please make sure that when in a construction area you adhere to the caution signs and follow the instructions.

Today I would like to send out some very important reminders.

Please, when you pull out of Tara

Woods at the traffic light, make sure that everything has stopped before you proceed through the green light. The trucks that travel up and down 41N go fast and sometimes cannot stop. I cannot express this enough; it only takes a few more seconds to look both ways to avoid being hit. The life you save may be your own.

We have stop signs throughout the community, these signs are there for your safety. Please when you come to a stop sign, stop and look all ways before proceeding.

The speed limit in the community is 20 MPH. Slow down and obey the speed limit. Watch for golf carts, walkers, pets and community workers.

For our July Yard of the Quarter, George and Janet Daly were chosen, Lot #224. Congratulations to them for a great job on the yard. We will be choosing another yard in September for October.

FROM THE BOARD ROOM by Lou Britain, the United States formally became a “free and independent nation”. The 4th of July is about a nation coming together, and here in Tara Woods it is about a Community coming together, to celebrate and honor our heritage. A big thank you to all the volunteers whose hard work made it happen.

HEADS UP – If you are a voting Florida resident or if you have a neighbor in Tara Woods who is eligible to vote in Florida this is important to you and them. Simply put-(1) We own our homes and rent/ lease our lots, which is taxed as commercial property. Currently this tax, restricted to 10% annually, is paid by us since it is passed on to us from Hometown America.

(2) A proposed amendment to the Florida State Constitution (Ballot Number 2) would retain provisions currently in effect that would restrict commercial property tax assessment increases to 10% annually

(for us this is a good thing).

(3) To continue this restriction, keeping it at 10% - WE MUST vote YES on Amendment Ballot Number 2. Otherwise, taxable values could result in big property tax increases that will be passed on to us.

We will continue to talk about this as the elections nears.

DID YOU KNOW THAT – If you enjoy sewing and would like to sew for a good cause you can join the Sewing for Charity group.

They sew an assortment of different items; such as pillow cases, lap quilts and adult bibs. The completed items are donated to a variety of different organizations throughout the area. The group meets in season on Tuesday from 10:00 AM -12:00 PM in the Craft Room. Something you might enjoy? For more information call Sue Uccello at 599-4264.

Summer in Tara Woods continues to be a busy time for your Board. The Hurricane Committee is meeting to decide the best course of action for any future storms and or hurricanes. We will keep you informed. Thank you to all who took the opportunity to register with Lee County’s Special Needs Program.

The safety of all our residents is our paramount concern. Thank you to the Special Needs Committee: Lynn Makia, Sue Cook, Kathy O’Hearn, Donna Phillips and Sylvia Stump, for the dedication to helping ensure our residents’ safety. Well done! We gathered together in the Clubhouse to celebrate the 4th of July. It was on July 4, 1776 that the thirteen colonies claimed their independence from England, an event that eventually led to the formation of the United States. She has five children, eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She enjoys playing cards, dancing, crafting, pool, golfing, exercise and bike riding. Paula Linde is a new fulltime resident at 19543 Cotton Bay and is originally from New York. She is a retired Aesthetician (facials and makeup). Paula enjoys sewing, dancing, watercolors and drawing. She also plays the harp.

Consider These Financial Tips for Single Women If you’re a single woman, most of your financial challenges and aspirations may resemble those of single men. Men and women face the same economic stress factors of modern life, and both groups have similar financial goals, such as the ability to retire comfortably. But women still face specific obstacles. You need to be aware of these challenges – and do everything you can to overcome them.

For example, women still face a wage gap. In 2017, women earned 82% of what men earned, according to the Pew Research Center. However, the wage gap narrows among younger workers, and may even disappear for highly educated women, especially those in the STEM fields – science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Another financial concern for women is connected to their role as caregivers. Women spend an average of 12 years out of the workforce to care for children, elderly relatives and even friends, according to an estimate by the Social Security Administration. Other studies report different figures, but all the evidence points to women being the ones who take time off from work to care for loved ones. This means fewer contributions to Social Security, 401(k)s and other retirement plans.

Faced with these and other issues, what can you do to help yourself move toward your important goals? Consider these steps: Develop good financial habits. Establishing good financial habits can pay off for you throughout your lifetime. These habits can include maintaining a budget, keeping your debts under control, and putting aside some money for a “rainy day.”

Take advantage of available opportunities. If you work for an organization that offers a 401(k) or similar plan, contribute as much as you think you can afford. At the very least, put in enough to earn your employer’s matching contribution, if one is offered. And every time your salary goes up, increase the amount you invest in your plan. Also, think about opening an IRA, which, like a 401(k), can offer tax-advantaged investment opportunities. If you have children, you’ll also want to explore college savings vehicles, such as a 529 plan.

Educate yourself about investing – and get professional advice. Some people think investing is just too complex and mysterious to be understandable. Yet, with patience and a willingness to learn, you can become quite knowledgeable about how to invest, what you’re investing in and what forces affect the investment world. And to help you create an investment strategy that’s appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, you may also want to work with a financial professional.

Discuss financial issues with your future spouse. If you get married or re-married, you’ll want to discuss financial issues with your new spouse. Specifically, you’ll want to answer questions such as these: What assets and debts do each of you bring to the marriage? Do you plan to merge your finances or keep them separate? Are your investment styles compatible? Do you have similar long-term goals? You and your new spouse don’t need identical views on every financial topic, but you both need to be willing to work together to advance your common interests.

Ultimately, you have a lot of control over your own financial future. And making informed choices can help make that future a bright one.

ENTERTAINING NEWS So Ladies and Gentlemen…the middle of the summer is upon us. Lounging around the pool is about as much exertion we should be doing this time of year. We have decided on the play for next year…“Red Velvet Cake War”. This will be one of the most fun shows for us to do and for you the audience a very funny show. We are excited to start rehearsals this fall and create a wonderful production for you in March. Remember to hold the date – either March 8th or 9th, 2019.

For now we could use the help of someone who would like to stand-in for an actor for a rehearsal or two. All you have to do is read a part while the actor is unable to attend a rehearsal. We rehearse on Monday and Thursday from 8:15 AM to 10:15 AM in October, November and 2 weeks in December. If interested in helping us or want more information about the Entertainers, please let me, Pat, know by calling 599-4490. The good thing about this experience is no memory needed—just reading. I hope you will think about it, it is a fun way to help our community.

P.S. In another part of this Columns look for the article about the quilt being created for this play by our very own quilters here in Tara Woods and your chance to help create a one of a kind work of art that will become part of the play this season and at the same time help a local charity. This is a win/win. We are actors – we’re the opposite of people!

CALLING ALL QUILTERS – WE NEED YOU!

The Entertainers have asked Donna Phillips to gather a group of quilters from Tara Woods to create a quilt for our play “Red Velvet Cake War” which will be on stage March 2019. During the play we will have the quilt on stage and we thought it would be great if it was a quilt created by our very own family of quilters here in Tara Woods. This quilt will be raffled off with the proceeds going to a charity. Donna enthusiastically and graciously agreed to take on this project with a few conditions – she could get enough sewers to agree to make the squares, she could get someone to help her put it together and that someone could either quilt or tie it and bind it to complete the project.

Donna has contacted quite a few and many have gotten back to her with “YES, I would love to help”. But she could always use more – more people means less squares each must make. The particulars were hers to decide; I just ask that it be old looking since it has been handed down to the characters in the play. Also, that it needs to be completed by the middle of January 2019. If you are away for the summer/fall season, and you decide to help, once you get the pattern and ideas on material any finished squares could be mailed to her to be added to the quilt.

Here are the particulars: queen size, pattern is a simple disappearing 9 patch, colors, prints and fabrics from the early 1900 era. Beyond that you need to talk to Donna. So, if interested in this project, call Donna Phillips at 731-5802.

If you aren’t a sewer/quilter, but have any old fabric that you would like to donate, we would be happy to have it. You may also make a monetary donation toward the material that we will have to purchase.

WELCOME TO THE NEW HORIZONS GREENHOUSE COLLABORATIVE Last year I wrote an article about the new Horizons Greenhouse Collaborative. I would like to give you an update about our summer projects.

In the late summer of 2013, New Horizons for New Hampshire partnered with Rimol Greenhouse Systems of Hooksett, NH to build this greenhouse. It is a 30’ x 72’ polycarbonate structure. This is the only urban greenhouse located in a major city in the State of New Hampshire. It is maintained by a collaboration of dedicated volunteers that select a specific day of the week to work in the Greenhouse. I selected Monday.

Each day New Horizons for New Hampshire provides hot meals to over 250 individuals and families. Each month over 900 individuals and families look to New Horizons for groceries. The vegetables and herbs are grown and planted both indoors in 22 large growing beds and 13 raised beds outside.

For the past four years we have partnered with a number of inner city elementary schools. The students start growing vegetable plants at their schools in early March. This week the students will return to the greenhouse with their vegetables to plant in our growing beds. During the growing season the vegetables go directly into the New Horizons soup kitchen for the daily meal.

As a gesture of gratitude for the student involvement, we built two new outside flower planters for one of the elementary schools. The old planters had deteriorated over the years. I have included a few pictures of our work replacing the planters.

We currently have over 600 residents here in Tara Woods and only 12 residents who deliver The Columns. Most of the delivery people also place The Columns in the plastic bags. I have one person presently “stuffing” The Columns then bringing them to two people who deliver them. The other delivery people stuff their own. In trying to help them out and make their job a little easier, I am looking for several volunteers willing to “stuff” the papers then bring them to those who deliver them. This is not a difficult chore or time consuming as I was able to stuff 115 in a half hour. If anyone is interested in volunteering for this, please call me at 239-599-4264.

I am also in need of substitute delivery people to cover for someone who is ill or away.

Thank you once again for all the well wishes and birthday cards I received in June. It was heart-warming and very thoughtful. I would like to wish Cody, Malachite and my other four-footed furry friends, “Paws Up” on their birthdays which fell during the month of July. I wanted to recognize them and others that I’ve missed due to the double issue of The Columns for June and July.

Boy! When they say the “Dog Days of Summer” are upon us, they weren’t fooling. It’s hard to work outside in the heat of the day. There is a great possibility of getting sun burned, dehydrated, or even heat stroke. So, be careful and know your limits. Plenty of sun screen and water, and work either early morning or after hours if possible. Somehow the over-doers pay the price. Sure, at times we do have afternoon rains and thunderstorms. They are a great blessing for our plants, even with the weeds. But, take another look and you might be surprised to hear and see the outdoor life that comes out in our yards afterwards.

Unfortunately, there is also a danger to my two- (humans) and four-footed friends. This brings us to “Bailey Speaks”. Cane Toad do raise cane; be highly aware of them.

Due to the heavy rains and standing water, these toads are in our landscapes and walkways. They are all highly toxic to humans, dogs and cats. The Cane Toad, also known as Bufo Toad, appears after a good rain occurring between sundown and

sunrise. They came from South and Central America and now can be found in Lee and Collier Counties.

What do they look like?

They are tan to reddish brown, their heads are marked with dark spots and are very warty, and they are much larger than the average toad or frog. They have large triangle glands behind their heads that excrete a highly toxic white goo when they get stressed or grabbed by hand. If one of our four-footed friends gets one in its mouth, they will be sprayed with this white goo.

Within a matter of minutes, the unfortunate friend will experience nervous tremors causing a rapid heartbeat, foaming at the mouth, disorientation, collapsed muscles, seizures, their gums turning a dark color, and finally cardiac arrest.

Even though we need the rain and it feels much cooler to walk our pets afterwards, try to minimize nighttime walks after the rain. Do not use an extended leash at this time because you need to control your pet. Get a good controlling leash in order to keep them out of harms’ way. If you do go at night, have a good flashlight and water. Make sure that the light shines ahead in order to see any toads which might be in your path. If you do encounter your pet getting hold of a Bufo Toad, use the water to flush out his mouth and immediately rush him to the nearest vet. I know it seems that every time we turn around a new invasive species comes to Florida.

Sure these toads eat anything from bugs, native frogs, snakes, and even small birds and mammals. But please leave them alone! Sad part these toads breed their eggs from March through September. Their eggs are similar to regular toads and frog eggs. As for our two-footed (humans) friends, the toads, if handled, will cause skin and eye irritations or rashes.

Since there are no guidelines on killing these toads, the only way they get removed from the environment is by other wildlife or they are run over by road traffic. Otherwise, there is no known means to kill them. Do you remember the story about the princess that kissed the toad who turned into Prince Charming? Have second thoughts – it may be a Cane or Bufo Toad and the dangers that lurk.

Well, my time is up. Have a safe “Dog Days of Summer”. Before you know it, the snowbirds will be back.

I look forward to greet them instead of chasing the Cane or Bufo Toad.

Bulbs: Aztec lily, butterfly lily, walking iris, and spider lily can be planted any time of the year, even late summer.

Herbs: Herbs that can be planted from plants (not seeds) include bay laurel, ginger, Mexican tarragon, and rosemary.

Vegetables: Many cool-season crops such as collards and onion can be planted now, including a final crop of warm-season vegetables, such as pepper. Tomato can also be planted for the fall garden.

What to Do August Lawn problems: Damaged areas can be the result of insects, disease, or irrigation problems. Be sure to determine the cause so the proper remedy is used. Use a sharp mower blade and only remove 1/3 of grass blade to reduce stress on the lawn.

Palms: If older fronds are yellowing, you may have a magnesium

or potassium deficiency. Apply an appropriate palm fertilizer. Nutrient deficiencies of Landscape and Fieldgrown Palms in Florida Poinsettias: Pinch back poinsettias and mums before the end of the month to allow time for buds to form for winter bloom.

Ornamental Plants: Rapid growth and leaching rains may result in nutrient deficiencies in some plants. Fertilize those plants that show signs of deficiencies.

Bedding Plants: Remove spent blooms, cut back, and fertilize flowering annuals and perennials to extend the bloom season into the fall months.

What to plant September Bedding Plants: If summer beds need refreshing, try scarlet sage, nasturtium, celosia, and wax begonia for color into fall.

Bulbs: Plant gladiolus every 2 weeks to stagger blooming, staking each plant. Add color, texture and pattern to the garden with the many varieties of Elephant’s Ear (Alocasia) available now.

Herbs: Plant herbs that tolerate the warm temperatures of early fall, such as Mexican tarragon, mint, rosemary,

and basil.

Vegetables: Prepare the fall vegetable garden. Using transplants from your local garden center will get the garden off to a fast start, but seeds provide a wider variety from which to choose. Cool-season crops such as broccoli, cabbage, collards, and lettuce can be planted What to do September Lawn problems: Continue to monitor the lawn for signs of insect damage. Fall armyworms, chinch bugs, mole crickets, and sod webworms are still active this month.

Divide perennials and bulbs: Divide and replant perennials and bulbs that have grown too large or need rejuvenation. Add organic matter to planting beds and monitor water needs Fertilize lawns: Fertilize bermudagrass with controlled-release nitrogen (not a weed & feed) this month.

Wait until next month to fertilize centipedegrass and bahiagrass lawns.

Check irrigation system: Before summer rains taper off, check that irrigation systems are providing good coverage and operating properly. See: How to Calibrate Your Sprinkler System.

Citrus: Fertilize citrus with a balanced fertilizer either this month or in October. Use controlled-release nitrogen as rain will not leach it from the soil too quickly. See: Citrus Culture in the Home Landscape.

Shrubs: Consider placing native shrubs like beautyberry, marlberry, firebush, and dahoon holly where you can view the birds that enjoy them.

COMPUTER CLUB The Tara Woods Computer Club provides free computer classes and is open to all residents and visitors. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice.

We are meeting at my home during the Summer season like we have in past years. These meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month at 10:30 AM. They offer a more relaxed atmosphere, with coffee and donuts provided for free. We normally cover a limited number of topics in this off-season and go into greater detail. My home is located in the northwest quarter of the park, at 19729 Kara Circle.

Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it.

I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. I live in Tara Woods

Hi, Everybody, I hope you got the picture of our group on the Clubhouse steps. These are pictures of all of us at different tables at Magnolia Landing. We had a good time. It was a good send-off for Norman and Betty. They will return from England in September. Different leaders of the group will be leading our sessions until they return. Marsha led last week as we finished up our Sara Young book, “Trusting in Christ”.

Wilma will be introducing our new Max Lucado book on Psalms next Tuesday. We think it is going to be a great time of praise and worship in the Psalms.
