SWIFT TENNIS LUNCHEON Each year at the end of every tennis season, a different team in the Women’s SWIFT League hosts an End-of-Season Luncheon, and it was the Tara Woods Angels who were responsible for the luncheon

this year. On Thursday, March 28th, they hosted members of the tennis teams from the various communities which make up the Women’s SWIFT League.

During the social time prior to our Luncheon Meeting everyone enjoyed fine musical entertainment by Norm Libby, who played tunes on our new Baby Grand Piano. Thank you, Norm; the music was delightful.

WELCOME NEW RESIDENTS

JOHN AND BEVERLY ANDERSON are new part-time residents at 19541 Charleston Circle and are originally from Michigan. They are both retired and are the parents of three children, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

FRED AND SANDY MILLER are part-time residents at 3021 Tara Lakes Circle. Off season they live in upper Michigan. Fred is a retired general contractor and Sandy is a retired administrator of assisted living. They are the parents of four children and have ten grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Fred enjoys furniture woodworking and Sandy likes volunteering and going on mission trips.

GHISLAIN MARCIL AND ANN ROUETTE are new part-time residents at 3022 Tare Lakes Circle.

They are both from Canada and the province of Quebec. Ghislain (pronounced Chie-la) is a retired Royal Canadian Mounted Policeman and Ann is retired from work in the Government of Canada. They have two children and three grandchildren. They both love to travel.

TONY RUSSO is a new parttime resident at 2863 Orlenes Street and is originally from Ohio. He is partially retired from installing alarm systems. He has two children and likes to play pool and enjoys painting.

It does not hardly seem possible for the season to be over.

Seems like you just got here, so no good-byes – just see you later. With the weather starting to warm up, now is a good time for year-round residents to enjoy the outdoor activities and get some of the home improvements under way. We will be scouting the next Yard of the Quarter.

Our winter residents are packing up to leave us for the summer, headed back North. We have had many luncheons, parties, dinners, ice cream socials and going away parties through April. Please have a safe trip. We are looking forward to your return in the fall. For us, summer starts our improvements

for the community, so our yearround residents will be seeing lots of activities going on.

You can give the Office the name and number of who that person is, so we know who to call in the event of an emergency.

Don’t forget to forward your mail with the postal service. If the box gets full, they will stop delivering mail.

They selected Sue Cook as Vice President of the Homeowners Association. She will be assuming the responsibilities of VP and will also continue as our Lee County Special Needs Program Coordinator. Congratulate Sue and thank her for helping to serve our community.

These new features are open to all Homeowners Association Members. Now is a good time to go on the website and register.

These enhancements are the result of suggestions received from our members of the TWHA. Thank you to our industrious and diligent webmasters, Bill Loveday and Donna Erhardt.

The Tara Woods Homeowners Association (www.twhoa.net) website continues to develop.

Recent enhancements include: • Putting the ‘Resident Concern Form’ on the site. The form can now be filled out on the site and be transmitted directly and confidentially to the Community Manager.

• The ad section is being expanded to include a services section.

• Displayed on the homepage will be “need to know” news.

HEADS UP Volunteering is multifaceted in its importance to our community.

It enriches our lives and brings us together as a community.

What is the most important part of Tara Woods?

1. The 24-hour controlled access.

2. The beautiful lakes with alligators and fountains.

3. The many available amenities.

4. The many dedicated hardworking volunteers.

All are excellent answers but without a doubt the most important aspect of Tara Woods are the volunteers. Thank you to all of our valued volunteers.

DID YOU KNOW THAT The average golf ball has 336 dimples? You would most likely know that if you participated in the Tara Woods summer Men/Women Golf League. It starts Tuesday, May 7th, and runs through the end of September. They play on Tuesday at Del Tura starting at 7:00 AM. It is a four-person scramble. All are welcome. CALLING POST TEST SUCCESSFUL!

The Tara Woods Homeowners Association tested the Calling Post messaging system on April 9th, 2019. There was a community-wide 560 telephone numbers attempted with 92% successfully contacted. The THWA is now working on correcting the attempts that failed.

The Calling Post is a telephone messaging system which works from a telephone number

database of residents created by and maintained by the Tara Woods Homeowners Association. When it is determined that an alert should go out to the community, a message will be generated and delivered via telephone. The THWA pays per telephone call for this service but includes all Tara Woods residents, so please support your THWA. If you were one of the residents who did not receive the “test”

So, Ladies and Gentlemen…as a representative of the Entertainers, today I had the opportunity to do something that was so great.

Along with Donna Phillips, who directed the quilt project and Sue Sobkowicz, the winner of the quilt, we traveled to Ronald McDonald House Charities. After a tour of their facilities, we realized what a wonderful place this is. While their child is in the hospital, parents have a safe, warm and inviting place to stay as long as needed. We were

there to present Laura Regain, the Director of RMHC with a check for $700.00. We were only able to

Are You Prepared for a Natural Disaster?

The year ahead offers new opportunities and experiences. But as you make plans throughout 2019, be mindful of the things that can derail those plans – such as the natural disasters that affected so many families in 2018. Every area around the country is subject to natural disasters, whether they’re wildfires, hurricanes or tornadoes.

How can you prepare for them?

Here are a few suggestions: Maintain adequate insurance. It’s a good idea to review your homeowners insurance at least annually to ensure it’s still providing the protection you need. And make sure you know exactly what your policy covers in terms of natural disasters. You’ll also want to review your life and disability insurance regularly. And, of course, you’ll want to stay current on your premiums for all your policies.

Keep a record of your possessions. The insurance claims process will be much easier if you take the time, before a natural disaster occurs, to photograph or videotape the contents of your home. You also might want to list the brands and serial numbers of appliances and electronics.

Know your passwords. It’s important to have ready access to the passwords for your financial accounts. You may be able to memorize them, but, if not, keep them somewhere – perhaps in your smartphone – that you can access anywhere. It’s always possible that a natural disaster will strike so quickly that you can’t even grab your phone, so, to be extra cautious, you might want to share your passwords with a trusted family member or friend. (Even then, though, you may want to change your passwords every so often.)

Build an emergency fund. During or following a natural disaster, you may need ready access to cash to cover some of the essentials of daily living, such as food and shelter. Keeping a lot of cash in your home may not be such a great plan, especially if you have to evacuate quickly. Consequently, you might want to create an emergency fund containing three to six months’ worth of living expenses, with the money kept in a low-risk, liquid and highly accessible account at a local bank or with your financial services provider.

Protect your documents. These days, many of your important financial materials, such as your investment statements, are available online, so they’re likely safe from any disaster. But you may still have some items, such as checkbooks, birth certificates, passports, Social Security cards, insurance policies and estate planning documents (i.e., will, living trust, etc.) on paper. Even if some or all of these things could eventually be replaced, it would take time and effort. You’re better off protecting them beforehand, possibly by keeping them in a safety deposit box at a local bank.

Save your receipts. You’ll want to save receipts for repairs and temporary lodging to submit to your insurance company. If you are not fully reimbursed for these expenses, they may be tax deductible, though you’ll need to consult with your tax advisor to be certain.

If you’re fortunate, you’ll never have to face a natural disaster that threatens your home and possessions. But it never hurts to be ready – just in case.

Coming from the north, I had no idea how to care for my palm trees. In doing research I found this to be very interesting and thought I would share with everyone. This is something I was definitely doing wrong.

OVER-PRUNING. I keep seeing articles online that tell people to cut the brown part of the leaf because it will save the palm tree from wasting nutrients on the dying leaf. Makes sense, right?

Wrong. Palm trees need dying leaves for nutrients, and when you cut them off, your palm tree doesn’t like it. Palms move nutrients from the older fronds to the new growth.

WHAT TO PLANT Annuals/Bedding plants: Plants that can take summer heat include coleus, salvia, torenia, wax begonia, and ornamental pepper.

Bulbs: Some lilies do better when their roots are crowded.

Try planting Amazon, Aztec, and Clivia lilies in containers to increase blooming.

Herbs: Plant heat-loving herbs, including basil, Mexican tarragon, ginger, cumin, summer savory, and rosemary.

Vegetables: Sweet potatoes, boniato, hot peppers, and tropical “spinach” such as Sisso, Malabar, and New Zealand can be planted now.

WHAT TO DO Pests: Watch for thrips, scale, and mites on ornamental plants because they become more active in warm weather.

Gardenias and ixora: Distinguish between the normal yellowing of older leaves and the yellowing of new growth, which usually indicates a micronutrient deficiency.

Oleanders: Inspect chewed or ragged leaves for oleander caterpillars.

Lawns: Watch for damage from chinch bugs in St. Augustinegrass and begin scouting for newly hatched mole crickets in bahiagrass lawns.

Tomatoes: Watch for pests, disease, and nutritional disorders on tomato plants.

Trees: Prepare for hurricane season by checking trees for damaged or weak branches and prune if needed. Hire an ISA-certified arborist.

Lawns: Prevent or minimize disease by following proper cultural practices when caring for lawns.

Thank you, Wayne, for all your hard work in organizing the perfect Chili Cook-off.

Contestants brought their chili to the Clubhouse kitchen where it was dished into small numbered cups. Once everyone tasted the entries, votes were cast by simply placing a colored “sticky hickey” next to the number of their choice.

The entries were each different…a sweet chili, a white chili, one with beef chunks, some with beans and some without beans. The winner was Phil Musso’s entry and it contained ground beef, sausage and VENISON! Many thanks to: Linda Beaulieu, Bob Clark, Barb Werner-Lubich, Phil Musso and Linda Weibel for their culinary prowess.

All participants received a Certificate of Appreciation, a medal and prizes. If anyone went home hungry, it was their own fault!

The New England Club held their Bon Voyage party on Saturday, March 30th.

Very delicious food was prepared by all our fabulous New England Club chefs. MID-ATLANTIC CLUB What a beautiful day for an offsite brunch at the Isles Yacht Club in Punta Gorda on Sunday, April 7th. Our last scheduled meeting until the fall season will be Sunday, May 19th, at 4:00 PM. Many of the snowbirds will have winged their way back north before this date, but we will celebrate our successes. The Tara Woods Computer Club provides free computer classes and is open to all residents and visitors. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. TARA WOODS TENNIS ASSOCIATION

Another winter tennis season has come to an end. I hope everyone had a great year playing open tennis with their friends and neighbors.

We had our last Round Robin of the season on March 31st and an End-of-Season Banquet at the Captain Fishbones restaurant in the Shell Factory complex. It was a very nice turnout for both of those events. All tennis players in Tara Woods were invited to the

dinner, whether or not they were a member of the Tennis Association.

We invite and encourage all Tara Woods tennis players to become members of the Tennis Association. Dues are only $1.00 per year. Your participation is encouraged and needed. We advise Hometown America, our community owner, about needed maintenance and we try to give them a hand with that. We have

four meetings a year, each one following our Round Robins, which usually are held on the fourth Sunday of the month in November, January, February and the last one in March.

Enjoy your summer, everyone.

Take care of yourself and be ready for the winter season next fall.

TARA WOODS MEN’S TENNIS LEAGUES WHITE TEAM – STALLIONS The season is finished. We were very fortunate that all the guys stayed healthy. We had a lot of fun and finished in second place. We would like to take this time to thank all those spectators who came to the games to watch us; we really appreciated it.

We wish you all a great summer and we will see you next fall!!!!

Cheers. – Glen Fisher BLUE TEAM – TIGERS We are finished with the 201819 tennis league season for another year. We played our last two games with a major loss to the other Tara Woods team, the Mustangs, with 0 wins and 6 losses, and we had a 2 win – 4 loss match to Admiralty.

That put us in seventh place in the Blue League team standings. We did play most of the season higher in the standings but were unable to sustain the last part of the season

to reflect an overall better season finish.

We must now start to consider our options for next season as to how to balance our teams to reflect a degree of equality for league participation.

It was a great effort from all, and a lot of FUN was had by all – that is why we participate. – Dale Holat BLUE TEAM – MUSTANGS We finished the season in the same manner in which we started, by winning 15 out of a possible 18 sets and securing a first place finish for the season! We would like to thank our many fans for their great support all year and look forward to continued good health for all our members.

Mike Renzulli will be taking over as Captain of the Mustangs, with a new team to be determined in October. It was my pleasure to serve as Captain for two years and I wish Mike good luck and support.

I sincerely hope that the games were enjoyable for all and that all of you will be participating next season.

As most of you know, Dale Holat has graciously volunteered to take over the reins as Round Robin Coordinator. He’s a great guy and I know he will do an excellent job.

I’ll be happy to assist him any way I can so that he feels comfortable getting started.

Again, I want to thank Al Dion for assisting me throughout the season. His help was indispensable.

TARA WOODS WOMEN’S TENNIS LEAGUE WOMEN’S TEAM – ANGELS On Thursday, March 28th, we hosted members of the tennis teams from the various communities which make up the Women’s SWIFT League. The Angels worked together “as a team” to provide a great luncheon for their guests. The luncheon consisted of a chicken salad or egg salad croissant, fresh fruit, and a variety of cheesecake.

Before lunch was served, our guests had the opportunity to mingle with the women from the other teams in a relaxed atmosphere – quite different from being on opposite sides of the net during league play. The women enjoyed wine, a slushie drink, and a variety of cheese and crackers.

We sincerely want to thank the 10 men who waited tables and served our luncheon to the 70 women in attendance. The waiters did a fabulous job and certainly made a good impression on our guests.

During the social time prior to our Luncheon Meeting everyone enjoyed fine musical entertainment

by Norm Libby, who played tunes on our new Baby Grand Piano.

Thank you, Norm; the music was delightful.

After many hours of preparation time, the event was over and our guests left to go back to their respective communities – hopefully well fed and happy.

Everything was cleaned up and put away, our Clubhouse was put back

in order and, I was later told, many of the Angels took time to enjoy a much-deserved rest.

Coincidentally, when the Tara Woods Angels hosted the Luncheon back in 2013, the date was also March 28th and we also served a total of 70 women – quite a coincidence!

As was mentioned in the last issue of The Columns, the Tara Woods Angels took first place this year. Congratulations to all of the players. After a relaxing summer we hope everyone comes back ready to play for another season.

Next season the Angels will be captained by Pam Ahlers, with Mary Sandre helping her as Co-Captain.

WARNING! IT’S ALLIGATOR MATING SEASON! Living in Florida means we share the state with an estimated 1.3 million alligators. As the weather warms and their mating season begins, you should keep these things in mind.

Warm spring weather means alligators are more active and more visible, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission says. Their mating season begins in April then continues through May, or June. Pregnant females will lay their eggs – often as many as three or four dozen – in late June or early July.

Rising temperatures increase an alligator’s metabolism, which means they begin seeking prey, according to FWC. It also means they’ll be observed basking in the

sun as they regulate their body temperature.

FWC warns that although alligator bite incidents resulting in serious injury are rare, keep your distance.

FWC also warns residents and visitors to never feed an alligator.

It’s not only dangerous, it›s illegal.

Feeding them can lead the animals to overcome their natural wariness of people and teach them to associate people with food.

For pet owners, FWC has a special warning — keep animals on a leash and away from water because they can resemble an alligator’s natural prey. A woman in south Florida was walking her dog and a gator grabbed her and dragged her into the water.

Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn, so plan accordingly to reduce chances of running into them.
