alentine’s Day Party Saturday, February 9th
Residents were treated to a marvelously decorated Clubhouse as they entered for the Tara Woods Valentine’s Party. Hearts and Cupids set a festive mood. The party goers took the opportunity to mix and mingle with old friends and meet new friends. Fun was in the air. What followed was a delicious sit-down meal featuring salad, bacon wrapped steak, skewered shrimp, and potatoes, followed by mouth-watering cheesecake. Before long the dance floor was packed. The assortment of music gave all the occasion to demonstrate their best dance moves. A big thank you to the Midwest Club for organizing and skillfully presenting a magical evening!

WELCOME NEW RESIDENTS A warm welcome to the following new residents of Tara Woods. We enjoy meeting new residents at Orientation where we take your picture, disseminate a great deal of information and answer any questions new folks may have. If you have not attended an orientation, please reserve Friday, March 8th, to meet in the Meeting Room at the Clubhouse at 10:30 AM for our next get-together. Tara Woods Welcome Committee: Donna Phillips, Mary Kivel, Pat Dunning, Joanne Byrne and Elaine Lavoie Richard and Diane Breniser: Richard and Diane are part-time residents at 19535 Charleston Circle. They are from Ohio. Richard is a retired computer store owner and Diane retired as an x-ray and radiology technician. He likes walking, reading, pickleball, flying,
boating and computers and she likes Mah Jongg, walking, biking, reading, swimming and pickleball. Cheryl Douglas: Cheryl, originally from Missouri, resides part-time at 19439 Cotton Bay. She still works in real estate for Coldwell Banker and has two children and four grandchildren. Cheryl enjoys the pool, beach and dancing. Stone and Sandy Ferris: Stone and Sandy are full-time residents at 2849 Darwin Street. Stone hails from California while Sandy is a New Yorker and they have two children. Stone has his own landscaping business and Sandy works with him. He is involved with prison ministries, enjoys Bible reading and
is an artist while Sandy likes reading, live music and theater. Joseph Macri and Earl Heller: Joe and Earl are full-time residents at 2984 Tara Lakes Circle. They are originally from Pennsylvania but have lived in Cape Coral for thirteen years. Joe works for Seminole Gulf Railway and Earl works for Lee County Port Authority. They have one child. Joe enjoys gardening, and Earl likes swimming, while they both enjoy the theater and traveling. Betsy Pierce: Betsy is a semiretired nurse from New York and is a parttime resident at 19435 Omega Road. She has two children and four grandchildren. Betsy likes walking, reading, aerobics and yoga.
Donald and Deborah Skelton: Donald and Deborah are full-time residents of 2842 Tara Lakes Circle who moved here from Long Island, New York. They have five children and six grandchildren. Donald served for twelve years in the military, doing three years in the Marine Corps and nine years in the Army National Guard. He spent the year of 2008 – 2009 in Iraq. Donald is retired but still works at the VA. Deborah is retired but will continue working when she arrives. Donald enjoys anything to do with sports, such as hockey, baseball, softball and exercising. He enjoys going to the rifle range. Deborah enjoys working around the house, exercising and gardening. Steve and Karla Zingre: Steve and Karla are part-time residents from Illinois who reside at 19300 Potomac Circle. He retired from his own cement company and she retired
as a banker. They have six children and seven grandchildren. Steve likes to exercise and watch all sports and Karla enjoys reading, shopping and exercising. Mike and Susan Bevilacqua: Mike and Susan are snowbirds from Rhode Island residing at 19753 Cottonfield Road. They both still work at Dave’s Market Place, he in building services and she in the gift store. They have three children and one grandchild. They both like golf and bowling while Susan is a part-time hairdresser and also enjoys gardening. Irene Henderson: Irene, formerly from Pennsylvania, is a full-time resident at 19479 Cotton Bay. Your Board of Directors is off and running. The duties and responsibilities have been assigned and the Directors are meeting with our many, many volunteers to touch base, ensure they have what they need and thank them for their service to OUR Community. Our new Tara Woods Homeowners Association website continues to grow and develop. More about that later. The Board is overseeing the revitalization of our calling post. The calling post is a phone-maintained database that allows us to notify every resident instantly of important information, such as hurricanes. I suggest you add the number (405-308-4474) to your contact list so that your phone will recognize it if we need to call. Thanks to the group working on this project. The “Members Celebration”
was an evening of fun, learning and entertainment. Special thanks to the Florida Repertory Theatre for their private presentation just for our valued members. HEADS UP – as we enter March 2019, many New Year’s resolutions have fallen off by the wayside. Here is one for March and the rest of the year. “I resolve to check out and register on the Tara Woods Homeowners Association’s website, www. twhoa.net. You will find it not only easy to keep this resolution but also a quick and convenient way to keep informed about our active community. Seasonal residents who register will not skip a beat. The latest news plus the The Columns are always at your finger tip. Good deal! Adding our website to your list will also make you younger, smarter and better looking! This last
sentence may not be completely true, but try it anyway; you will like it. DID YOU KNOW THAT – when they say “let’s get the ball rolling” they are likely referring to our Tara Woods Bowling League. This league has been rolling the lanes for 20 years but is as young and vibrant as ever. It is a great way to meet new people and make new friends. They bowl on Wednesdays at 10:00 AM from October to April at Cape Coral Bowland on Santa Barbara Blvd. in Cape Coral. Whether you are really good or not, it’s always fun with great camaraderie. Danny Hicks and Judy Varnadoe: Danny and Judy are full-time residents at 2826 Cloister Street which they are remodeling. Danny has lived in Florida for fifty years and Judy for sixty years, but they hailed from Tennessee and Canada respectively. He still works as a project manager at Dynastar Inc. while she works part-time as a clerk at JWK Underground as well as a self-employed house cleaner. They are the parents
of eight children and have sixteen grandchildren as well as four greatgrandchildren. He enjoys darts, golf and computers while she likes dominoes, cards, swimming and TV. Marty and Lorna Williams Marty and Lorna, originally from Ohio, live at 2858 Tara Lakes Circle full-time and have named the alligator living in the lake across from their home Edward. Lorna is retired from Costco – CDS and Marty works for

Suncoast Industries of Florida. They have two children. Both Marty and Lorna enjoy their dogs, Hope and Gizmo, as well as collecting memorabilia. Marty enjoys playing poker while Lorna likes reading and ceramics.

You know they say time flies when you are having fun. Isn’t it always a beautiful day here in sunny Florida. There is always so much to do here in Tara Woods, Bocce Ball, Pickleball, Tennis, Shuffleboard, swimming, yoga, horseshoes, walking, biking, and the list goes on and on. We do hope you find what makes you happy. Check the boards in the Clubhouse to see if there is a show or activity that you would enjoy. For the safety of our residents we have installed new STOP signs in several locations around the community – Tara Lakes Blvd. and Tara Lakes Circle. Please obey all traffic rules while driving through the community. Dog owners; please remember to keep your pets leashed at all times (even on golf carts) and out of your neighbor’s yard. Who Can You Trust to Reduce Stress of Estate Planning? When it’s time to do your estate planning – and it’s actually never too soon to begin – you may find the process, at first, to be somewhat bewildering. You’ll have many questions: What sort of arrangements should I make? Who should get what? And when? How can you address these and other issues? You’ll need to get some help. In drawing up your estate plan, you will need to work with an attorney. And for guidance on the investments that can help fund your estate planning arrangements, such as a living trust, you can draw on the help of a financial advisor. You also may want to connect with a trust company, which can help facilitate your estate plans and coordinate the activities of your legal and financial professionals. Of course, you might think that only the very wealthy need a trust company. But that’s not really the case – people of many income levels have long used these companies. As long as you have a reasonable amount of financial assets, you likely can benefit from the various services provided by a trust organization. And these services can range from administration of a variety of trusts (such as living trusts and charitable trusts) to asset-management services (bill-paying, checkwriting, etc.) to safekeeping services (such as providing secure vaults for jewelry and collectibles). In short, using a trust company can make things a lot easier when it’s time to plan and execute your estate. A trust company can help you in the following ways: Avoiding family squabbles – It’s unfortunate, but true: Dividing the assets of an estate can cause ill will and turmoil among family members. But a trust company can act as a neutral third party, thus minimizing any feelings of unfairness. Providing greater control – When you establish an arrangement such as a living trust, administered by the trust company, you can give yourself great control over how you want your assets distributed. For example, you can specify that a certain child receive portions of your estate spaced out over several years – a move that may appeal to you if you think this child might not be ready to handle large sums all at once. Saving time and effort – As mentioned above, when you work with a trust company, you can let it do all the “legwork” of coordinating your plans with your financial professional, tax advisor and attorney. And these professionals are used to dealing with trust companies. Gaining Protection – Trust companies assume fiduciary responsibility for your financial well-being – which means that your best interests will always be considered in each service and transaction performed. You can choose from among a variety of trust companies, large and small. Before choosing one, you may want to check out the services and fees of a few different firms. In any case, as you move toward that time of your life when estate planning becomes more essential, talk to your attorney, tax advisor and financial professional about whether using the services of a trust company might be right for you.

TARA WOODS HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION NEWS
The FMO is looking for a few good men and women to join the team. The working conditions are great, the hours aren’t long and there is no pay. All you have to do is attend one FMO meeting a month between November and April. Meetings are held on the second Friday of each month and start at 1:00 PM. Realizing it is close to lunch, there is a break around 2:00 PM with delicious refreshments. Meetings are generally held in the developments surrounding Tara Woods or in Punta Gorda. On a rare occasion you may have to travel out of the area. Carpooling is available. If interested, please contact the writer. One side benefit is you get to see how the other half lives. Our March meeting will be held on Friday, March 8th, at Lakewood Village in Punta Gorda. As previously indicated, the meeting starts at 1:00 PM and carpooling is available. ENTERTAINING NEWS So, Ladies and Gentlemen…the excitement is building, I know you can feel it in the air around Tara Woods. Our play “RED VELVET CAKE WAR” will be performed on stage Friday and Saturday, March 8th and 9th. The tickets are $7.00 and are available at the door, and at Saturday Morning Coffee and Tuesday Bingo. The doors open at 6:30 PM, and the play starts at 7:00 PM. As a reminder to new and established residents coming to the stage play, we do NOT allow food and/or drink into the Clubhouse for this performance. We are offering theater and cabaret seating. If you need assistance for any reason, please see an usher. There will be a warm and welcoming volunteer at each door to help if you need assistance, or if you have any questions. Our play is very funny and shows you that family reunions can be exciting and fun. We have all put so much time and effort into this performance, we hope you enjoy it as much as we do. In addition, you will get the opportunity to see the quilt that has been created by our own Tara Woods Quilters since it will be used as part of the performance. You will also have the opportunity to purchase a raffle ticket for the chance at winning this quilt. The raffle will be pulled during the intermission of Saturday’s performance. You do not need to be in attendance to win, since you have put your contact phone number and name on the back of your ticket. The money raised for this quilt will be donated to “Ronald McDonald House” – a very worthy cause to be sure. Our February meeting was well attended, and it was great seeing some brothers we hadn’t seen for a while. Also, we welcome Bro. Lyle LeClair who contacted me,and hopes to make our next meeting which will be Tuesday, March 5th. Ken Ferris has secured reservations at Dina’s in Sabal Springs for our annual luncheon. Bulbs: Plant gladiola corms 6” apart and 4” deep and stake as they grow. Plant caladiums for a showy tropical display all summer. Herbs: In addition to their culinary value, many herbs are ornamental and attract butterflies to the garden. Vegetables: Warm season crops, such as sweet corn, cucumber, watermelon, and pepper, should be planted now for late spring harvest. What to do Trees and shrubs: Prune when new
growth begins after the end of the dormant season. To guard next season’s blooms, begin pruning after the last flowers fade but before new buds. Mulch: Renew or add mulch in landscape beds to reduce weeds and retain moisture. Fertilize lawns: If not done in February, fertilize lawns this month. Pests: Monitor landscape plants for insects, especially for the presence of aphids on tender new growth. Insects become more active during warm weather. Fertilize: palms and ornamental shrubs if not done last month. Choose a fertilizer based on each plant’s needs. Examine lawns for problems: Identify damaging insects and spot treat early to prevent widespread damage. Rule out cultural problems, such as irrigation failure, before treatment. MIDWEST CLUB

On February 1st the Midwest Club gathered together to share camaraderie, soups, salads, and desserts. Once again, the cooks did not disappoint. Over 20 wonderful soups, numerous tasty salads, and tantalizing desserts were sampled. No one left the meeting hungry. The members also learned some new and fun facts about each other by playing a game called Let’s Mingle. Someone at the meeting has nine great-grandchildren. Three men were wrestlers in college. Many members had never been to Disney World, and most members have only lived in one Midwestern State – that was just the tip of the proverbial iceberg. The Clubhouse looked fabulous wrapped in red on Saturday, February 9th, as the Midwest Club sponsored the Valentine’s Day Party for Tara Woods. A wonderful meal of Caesar Salad, bacon- wrapped tenderloins, and shrimp was prepared and served by the members. Then people danced the night away with their Valentines. Hard work over many hours by a myriad of people made this night a success. Thank you! Calling all Parrot Heads…Friday, March 1st, will find the Midwesterners at a Jimmy Buffet themed meeting in the Clubhouse. Caribbean Chicken sandwiches will be served. Scrumptious tropical sides, salads and desserts will be prepared and shared by the many wonderful cooks in the club. Debbie Polenska

Hope you all are enjoying the warmer weather after cooler days and nights last month. There was no empathy when we talked with friends and family up north when we complained about having to wear long sleeves and pants (and still wearing flip flops) as they endured minus temperatures in winter coats, scarfs and mittens! We enjoyed a traditional potluck dinner last month and enjoyed our guest speaker. Thanks to Jean & Dave Sharp for asking her cousin, Brian, to share his stories about touring with iconic entertainers such as Kitty Wells, Wilf Carter and our Canadian icon, Stomping Tom Connors; brought back many memories for all of us. The March Canadian dinner will be hosted by Kathy & Carl Marquis who have planned a Hawaiian burger night. Please note the dinner is scheduled for Friday, March 22nd, at 5:00 PM. Tara Woods Computer Club
The Computer Club offers free computer classes for the owners, renters, and guests of Tara Woods. These are held at 10:30 AM every Thursday in the Card Room at the Clubhouse. They are open to everyone, and there is no membership fee. The first and third Thursday of each month are devoted to Computer Basics. This is a complete course on how to use your computer, including Windows, programs, games, internet, email, and multimedia. The second and fourth Thursday are reserved for General subjects; this year we will examine social media, smart phones, tablets, and the Google (Android) operating system. Other topics will be added later as time allows. If there is a fifth Thursday in a month, it is an open
question and answer session where you can ask me almost anything you want. This month we covered Ebook Readers and programs, and will continue with computer speech and speech recognition. The Basics course has progressed through the Desktop and Windows files and folders; the next topics will be an overview the Wordpad word processor that is included with every Windows computer, and the Microsoft Paint application used for drawing simple diagrams and graphics. It’s never too late to join our group, even if you’re a total novice. This is a great time to learn the Basics; we are starting again at the very beginning and assume that you know nothing about com-
puters. We spend as much time as we need to on each topic, and the next topic to be covered is always posted on the bulletin board in the Clubhouse. Feel free to attend only those classes that appeal to you. Bring something to take notes with, and your laptop computer if you want to follow along on it. I will answer any question you care to ask me. I also give private lessons and set up or repair computers in your home. I’ve been designing, programming, repairing, teaching, and working with computers since 1968, and can help you with all of your computer needs. Another month has gone by and another Round Robin is in the books. The original date in January was rained out, although the Tennis Association Meeting and meal were held that evening. It was decided to play the cancelled tennis matches the following Sunday, and it
turned out to be a very nice day. The water problem on Court 2 has been alleviated. We cleaned out the drain on

the north end of the court (it was plugged with debris). We took the grills up and cleaned out the drain. It now is working as it should. Thanks to Janice Johnston, Mary Sandre, and Gail Stewig for cleaning the tops of the nets; they look great. Fred Puhlfuerst, Ed Sandre, myself, and Mark Van Ort hung new wind-break fabric on the north end of Court 4 (the old fabric ripped in the heavy wind a few weeks ago). We are looking forward to our next Round Robin and Tennis Association Meeting on February 24th. – Roger Rafferty TENNIS LEAGUES WOMEN’S LEAGUE Women’s Team – Angels As I write this article in early February, the Tara Woods Angels remain in first place with 52 wins and only 8 losses. Match Updates: We played the then second place team, the Herons Glen Volley Girls, on January 10th. We managed to win all six sets; however, one of the sets was a real nail-biter as Gail and Liz were down 2 games to 5, with Herons Glen needing to win only 1 more game to win the set. Well, Gail and Liz managed to get the score to 5 games each. The Herons Glen team then got the next game for a 6–5 advantage. Gail and Liz rallied again and got the next game, so it was 6 games each, which meant a tie-break was necessary. Fortunately, Gail and Liz played hard and won that tie-break. What a great outcome for them – and for the team! There is a moral here: Never Give Up! The Tara Woods Angels had another intense match on January 31st when Janell and Jean played two of the best players from Lake Fairways. There were many strong rallies, and even though the Lake Fairways women had set point at least one time, Janell and Jean remained strong and won that set in a tie-break. That match made for some very exciting tennis – both for the players and for the fans who were watching. We played our make-up match against the women from Six Lakes on February 4th and we managed to win all 6 sets. We had another come-from-behind victory when we played the then second place Pine Lakes Panthers on February 7th. The set didn’t start out too well for Jean and Linda who were down 2 games to 5 when they shifted into high gear and
got the match to 5 games each. Pretty soon it was 6 games each, which called for a tie-break which, fortunately, Jean and Linda won. Overall, the Angels won all 6 sets that day. We have only four more matches to play to close out our season. I will report on the outcome of those matches and our final standings in the April issue of The Columns – I hope to have good news to report at that time. – Linda Engel MEN’S LEAGUE White Team – Stallions The Tara Woods Stallions had a great match this week against Lake Fairways, winning 5 out of 6 matches. Our team of 10 guys is really gelling together, playing well and enjoying the moment. We are presently in second place, 10 sets out of first place and 19 sets ahead of third place. Our formula of playing all the players each week (some play twice and some play once) seems to be working great. We all get to participate each and every week. Let’s keep having fun!!! – Glen Fisher Blue Team – Tigers We played our January 10th match against the team from Admiralty. We were able to play to a 3-win, 3-loss finish. Our next match on the 17th was against our community brothers the Mustangs… Unfortunately we were met by a stronger team and lost all 6 sets. However, we had a tremendous standing-room-only cheering section. They cheered great plays by both teams. That in itself made it an enjoyable match. The next two matches were a flip-flop; we won 2 and lost 4 to the Herons Glen Yard Dogs and we won 4 and lost 2 the following week to the Lake Fairways Cougars. That concluded our January schedule. On February 7th we started off against the Six Lakes Raptors. We did manage a 3–3 finish. So, we remain in the middle of the standings in the league. There are five matches left in the season. – Dale Holat Blue Team – Mustangs As I write this article on February 7th, we remain in first place in the Blue division, holding an 8 set advantage over the second place team. We continue having good health amongst our team and I believe this has been the main reason we have had pretty good success so far. Most all of the teams in our division now have all their players playing, so the matches have been very close. We will finish the February portion of our schedule and will be heading into our final three matches in March when this article appears in the March issue of The Columns. We will have our rematch against the Tara Woods Tigers on March 14th – a “must see” event!!!
As always, stay healthy, and see you on the courts!! – Ed Malatesta ROUND ROBIN The second Round Robin of the season was scheduled to be played on Sunday, January 27th. However, Mother Nature would not cooperate with the weather. It rained…and rained…and rained some more. Thus, it had to be postponed till the following Sunday. Alas, it was a beautiful day. After the early morning mist was burnt off by the sunshine and the courts were dried off (with the help of some ambitious and energetic players), a morning of fun and friendly competition took place. Many thanks to Mary & Ed Sandre for the courtside snacks they provided. That evening a delightful meal was prepared by Sharon & Don Boehlke and Mary & Bill Nothnagel prior to the Tennis Association Meeting. Many thanks for your efforts. The next Round Robin is scheduled for Sunday, February 24th, and the final Round Robin of the season is scheduled for Sunday, March 31st. The sign-up sheet is always posted on the first of the month at the courts. And, as always, all are encouraged to participate. At this time, I would like to express my appreciation to Al Dion for stepping up and helping me with the Round Robins; it made my job that much easier. Thanks, Al! MAGIC SOFTBALL MAGIC SOFTBALL UPDATE! The Tara Woods Magic Softball season has gotten off to a roaring start. We defeated both Pine Lakes and Old Bridge and had strong games against Herons Glen and Buccaneers that got away in the late innings. We’ve encountered a few bumps and bruises along the way, as usual, but the team members are doing a good job of sticking together and continuing to battle every game. Our season concludes Wednesday, March 20th, with our final game versus Herons Glen. The Annual Spaghetti Dinner was a ROUSING success, with nearly 200 hot, delicious meals served. Folks raved about the quality of the food and the service. And next year we promise to have MORE CHOCOLATE cake! Once more, we thank you for your support, both at the ballpark and at our dinner.
