The 1987 symposium was a cry for help. The people and governments of Sarasota and Manatee Counties heard the cry. Hundreds of millions of dollars later, and after untold hours of labor by a constellation of volunteer organizations, the decline was halted.

In mid-February, 2012 New College sponsored a second Sarasota Bay Watershed Symposium. More than 200 scientists, staffers, volunteers and EXUHDXFUDWV ² DQG RQH HOHFWHG RIÀFLDO ² heard presentations looking back at past successes. They also heard the work isn’t over.

The Stormwater Challenge “Stormwater is what we do to rain,� said Tim Rumage, a professor of environmental studies at the Ringling College of Art and Design. “It’s pure, and then it’s immediately polluted.�

He calculated one-half inch of rain falling within the limits of the City of Sarasota would be an 18-day supply of fresh water. But in reality it becomes 127 million gallons of stormwater, channeled along curbs and gutters into pipes for rapid discharge into Sarasota Bay. “There are so many things we can do with rain. It could fill cisterns or rain barrels or water a rain garden,� said Rumage. “But instead it becomes a conveyor of pollutants.�

From a fresh-water marsh a century ago, to the county’s early agricultural heritage to rampant development and back to a fresh-water marsh, all with the intervention of several million GROODUV IURP IDUPHUV ÀUVW WKHQ GHYHORSHUV DQG now the public.

But the county will need several projects WKH VL]H RI WKH FHOHU\ ÀHOGV WR PHHW REMHFWLYHV RI UHWHQWLRQ DTXLIHU UHFKDUJH DQG SXULÀFDWLRQ of stormwater if the objective is to mimic the natural cycle shown in the 1846 map.

Not every project needs to be huge. Pelican Cove RQ 5REHUWV %D\ KDG D Ă RRGLQJ SUREOHP DORQJ Bay House Point Drive, which turned into a mini-river during a rainstorm. Verona Morse and other unit owners talked with the county, received a grant from the water management district, and cooperated with a neighboring GHYHORSPHQW FDOOHG 3RUWRĂ€QR WR XVH WKHLU under-utilized stormwater retention pond. “Sarasota County was a great help,â€? she said.

Expensive Successes The call to action a quarter century ago came atop new laws and regulations. The Federal Clean Water Act of 1972 gave teeth to governments to attack pollution. But Sarasota County was slow off the mark. “With regards to a utility system, the philosophy was, ‘If you don’t’ build it, they won’t come,’� said Theresa Connor, executive director of the county’s environmental services. “Developers had created little package plants to treat the sewerage from their development, more than a 120 of them,� she said. Some were failing, and most were discharging either directly or indirectly to the bay.

People continued to come, and county policy changed. In the 1980s it bought most of the obsolete plants, and created four regional plants (with four more planned) with no discharge to the bay. Manatee County this year completed a major treatment plant, which does not discharge into the bay. The City of Sarasota is now creating a deep-well injection system to stop its discharge of highly treated wastewater.

As important, the county began a program in 1999 to install sewer lines along the Phillippi Creek basin to replace old septic tank systems.

That project is now about half completed. “We are seeing improvements from reduced [nutrient] loading and improved public health,� said Conner.

One impact of reducing algae-feeding nutrients is better visibility in bay water, which facilitates seagrass growth. Northern Roberts Bay where Phillippi Creek empties was recently taken off the list of imperiled water bodies, said Conner.

In fact seagrasses are bouncing back. A 2011 survey indicates there are now more than 9,000 acres of patchy and continuous seagrass, up from 7.200 in 1950. However other indicators are not as robust. Why I Love Sarasota Sarasota is a Kaleidoscope City. Turn the cylinder, and its mirrors and colored shapes create complex, colorful and shifting patterns which are challenging and pleasing to the eye.

The beaches, the sunsets, and the banyan trees make ours a place of incredible beauty The Gulf of Mexico laps at our western shore, while bridges arch the waters of the bay, making each trip from the mainland to Siesta Key a visual adventure. To drive down 41 as it loops past the docks always brings a smile to my face, and I think: We are so lucky to live here!

When Frank and I moved here in 1964, the town was smaller, of course. There were lots of famous artists and writers and not quite so many theatres. The Opera House had not yet evolved into an opera house. Originally called “The Edwards Theatreâ€? when it was built in 1926, it was called “The Florida Theaterâ€?, and VKRZHG D JRRG QXPEHU RI IRUHLJQ Ă€OPV VRPH of them mildly erotic. Our good friend, artist Julio De Diego was often found sweeping through the theater door in his long black cape, intent on viewing the latest offering. Among a modest collection of wives, Julio had once been married to Gypsy Rose Lee, and was a WUXH DĂ€FLRQDGR RI DOO WKLQJV H[RWLF :DQW WR VHH Julio’s face? Check out his large self portrait hanging at the Van Wezel auditorium.

Bird Key was originally the home of John Ringling North, nephew of the circus magnate, John Ringling. At that time, it was just a small island connected to the Ringling Causeway by a tree-lined causeway of its own. Along came GHYHORSHUV LQ WKH ODWH ÀIWLHV DQG WKH DFUH LVODQG ZDV FUHDWHG IURP GUHGJH DQG ÀOO (YHQ after we arrived in 1964, there was still a grand uproar over the intrusion of Bird Key, and huge worries about the effect it would have on the ÀVK SRSXODWLRQ 7KHUH ZDV DQ DFWLYH JURXS called SAVE OUR BAYS committed to the philosophy of John D. MacDonald, who in 1962 had written a book entitled FLASH OF GREEN, based on the battle between developers and ecologists. In 1984, a movie by the same name was made by Victor Nunez starring Blair Brown and Ed Harris. And, guess what, guys – I was their Assistant Casting Director! Dozens of my friends were coerced into appearing in YDULRXV FURZG VFHQHV ZKLOH RXU 0HUFHGHV 6/ VWDUUHG DV ´WKH VH[\ FRQYHUWLEOH¾ LQ

I tell you these tales to demonstrate that Sarasota has always been a Kaleidoscope City filled with color, adventure and surprise.

Today, there are so many things to celebrate in Sarasota that we can hardly stay home. An amazing azing array of choices awaits us on any given day. We can take a walk on Siesta Key’s amazing beach with its powdery sands of ground quartz or visit the lovely pine forest on Lido Key. Occasionally we have had the privilege of kayaking the remarkable mangrove tunnels that border Lido, and sometimes we are even invited out to sea in a serious sailboat. We once sailed our own 16’ catamaran, but that was a while ago.

We often gaze at the orchids at Selby *DUGHQV DQG VWDUH DW WKH Ă€VK DW 0RWH 0DULQH The Ringling Museum Grounds remain a special treat. I often took our young sons there to sniff roses in Mabel’s garden and to climb the banyan trees. (I wouldn’t do that now, of course, but it was perfectly “legalâ€? in the old days.) The museum is free on Mondays, and has other inexpensive surprises, among them the monthly dance on the patio at Ca’ d’Zan, an event that takes place every third Thursday.

All of the activities previously mentioned have modest price tags and generous membership privileges. For a larger investment, there are dozens of wonderful theatres, including the Asolo Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre, Golden Apple, Players Theatre and the Banyan Tree Theatre. The Sarasota Orchestra is highly acclaimed, as are the Sarasota Ballet, the Sarasota Opera, and the Sarasota Film Festival.

Major road shows come through our town to be presented at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, while Circus Sarasota maintains the unique circus tradition of our amazing FRPPXQLW\ $QG RI FRXUVH WKHUH LV ÀVKLQJ tennis and golf. :LWK D FLW\ZLGH SRSXODWLRQ RI LQ DQG D FRXQW\ ZLGH SRSXODWLRQ RI WKH choice of activities becomes an enormous box of bonbons available to visitor and resident alike.

And that’s why I love Sarasota – there are so many colorful things to do!

Chef Giuseppe Urbano will offer a hello from his post at the open kitchen. Regular customers — it seems that everyone there is a regular — will offer a greeting. Don’t be shy to eye the dishes on the tables as you make your way through the intimate dining room to your table or place at the counter.

The long counter separating the kitchen from the dining area offers the best seats in the house for the dining show. More of the production later.

Oh Mamma Mia! offers regional Italian fare. Italian food is much more than pizza and spaghetti and meatballs: every region has special foods created from their special meats, vegetables, and fruits, and Chef Giuseppe’s menu traverses his home country for his patrons’ dining pleasure.

A popular starting dish is Calamari Saltati ($9.99). The calamari rings are sautĂŠed with garlic and served with red crushed pepper, extra-virgin olive oil, basil and tomato sauce.

Antipasto all’ Italiana for two ($14.99) is a PHDO XQWR LWVHOI $ PDVVLYH ERZO LV ÀOOHG ZLWK Genoa salami, Prosciutto di Parma, Pistachio Mortadella, Sopressata, Capicolla, Asiago, Fontina, and provolone, mozzarella, and olives.

Another hearty appetizer is Bruschetta al Pomodoro ($8.99): grilled Ciabatta bread slices brushed with extra-virgin olive oil and garlic, topped with diced tomatoes Gaeta olives, and capers.

Our visit saw more Mpepatella di Cozze ($8.99) come out of the kitchen at Oh Mamma Mia! than at many seafood shacks. The large mussels are sautĂŠed with garlic, extra-virgin olive oil and crushed black pepper.

You know the mussels must be good when Chef Giuseppe’s mother orders it.

There are 20 pasta dishes offered at Oh Mamma Mia! Chef Giuseppe said the most popular fare, in fact the most popular menu item he has, is Melanzane della Nonna ($16.99). The vegan dish is battered sliced eggplant, stacked with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil and Parmiggiano cheese and served with a side of Penne Pomodoro.

Eggplant is the most popular dish? “People are learning how to eat well,â€? the chef explained. “Everything we offer is contemporary Italian IRRG Âľ KH VDLG ´,W¡V ZKDW \RX ZRXOG Ă€QG LQ ,WDO\ today. It’s all regional, and the recipes represent Italy. They’re traditional recipes using all fresh products. It’s all about the food.â€?

Another popular dish for carnivores is Lasagna alla Bolognese ($16.99). The six-layer

dish has homemade egg pasta layers with alternating levels of Bechamel sauce, meat sauce and Parmiggiano cheese.

Your tour of Italy at Oh Mamma Mia! continues with entrees of chicken or pork (all priced at $18.99), veal dishes (most priced at $20.99) or seafood (all at $19.99).

Chef Giuseppe said the second-most popular menu selection is Vitello al Marsala e Porcini. The veal slices are indeed thinly sliced, the butter, onion, and porcini mushrooms succulent, and the Marsala wine sauce wonderful.

Her name is Stella Kreschenko and she was born in Russia on the Chechnyan border, “surrounded by the most beautiful mountains.â€? When the war came there her WRZQ WRRN DQ RYHUĂ RZ RI UHIXJHHV ZKLFK radically changed the character of the town.

She had, however, serendipitously won the lottery of a Green Card.

Part of her family had moved to the U.S. to the state of Georgia and Stella arrived there on May 16 LQWR ´VXQVKLQH à RZHUV everywhere - it was gorgeous!�

Stella had been a gymnast during her life in Russia with a degree in Physical Ed., so on moving

to California (and marrying an Olympic Medalist) she took a job at “Club One� as a Personal Trainer. But, ever since having had a Boutique those years before, she yearned once again to design clothes.

In her Siesta Key Boutique what is unusual about her line of clothing is her sense of their adaptive quality - they appear to have been designed by a Floridian for Florida climate and lifestyle; they could stylishly move from The Asolo Theatre, through dinner and a night-cap at Michaels, looking chic and original and comfortable.

Stella’s designs are often made of gauze - a lovely, thin, semi-transparentt m gauze that falls from shoulder to hem and drapes gracefully. One sleevelesss d design ties in front at the hem, and each has some special touch thatt causes you to ponder “Why couldn’t I think of that!�

As the water heats up a little, mangrove snapper will be in our chum slicks along with Cobia, Spanish mackerel, little Tunnies and even King mackerel and maybe small sharks. On the bottom we will be catching Porgies, and the larger Key West grunts. )ORXQGHU DQG +RJĂ&#x20AC;VK VRPH RI P\ IDYRULWH Ă&#x20AC;VK WR FDWFK DORQJ ZLWK RWKHUV VSHFLHV

will still be available around wrecks, ledges DQG URFN SLOHV )RU WKHVH Ă&#x20AC;VK ZH XVH IUHVK cut bait or live shrimp right on the bottom. If the water temps are still cold, 58-65 degrees or so, we take handpicked shrimp and cut them in half. This will help the shrimp odor to be more noticed. We use 3/0 circle hooks with a small weight that slides down the mono leader to the hook. This is called a knocker rig. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s simple and it can be found LQ DQ\ Ă&#x20AC;VKLQJ ERRN IRU KRRNLQJ DQG EDLWLQJ

OK, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s see what a little offshore trolling might produce in March especially at the near end of the month where the air and the water temps are climbing upwards.

I thought he was kidding, he wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t.

Of course my co-workers egged them on, (thanks guys) they surrounded me, kept snapping pictures, and demanded I buy them drinks because I â&#x20AC;&#x153;had more money than God!â&#x20AC;?

After repeatedly telling them I wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Ms. Roberts, one of them got angry and said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;I heard all you Hollywood people are a bunch of tightwads, and by the way, you havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t made a good movie since Pretty Woman. The green turtle has, and always has had, a serious problemâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;it tastes too good.

When a vulnerable animal has to nest on land every two to three years, crawls slightly faster than a snail, weighs as much as 800 pounds, and tastes delicious, its FKDQFHV RI WKULYLQJ RQ D SODQHW Ă&#x20AC;OOHG ZLWK a subspecies of clever apes with an appetite and an ax are not good.

From Sarasota to Matanzas Pass the early settlers were particularly fond of the green turtle. Its nests were often raided for the eggs, and the adult was a common item on the settlersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; menus. There is every reason to believe that this region once had as many green turtle nests as loggerhead nests, and that predation around the turn of the 20th century severely diminished the green turtle population. Today green turtle nests in Southwest Florida are rare events, averaging fewer than a dozen per year.

The green turtle is not named for the color of its carapace, which is actually black. Green is the color or G RI WKH IDW DQG Ă HVK IRXQG beneath the carapace.

Its range was oncee at even greater than that of the loggerhead,, extending well down n into Australia, the Red d Sea, Madagascar, and everywhere in between.

Like all sea turtles, the green turtle is an expert open ocean navigator, though the mechanism

used for its long transoceanic voyages is unknown. The current speculation is that it has trace elements of magnetic rock in certain parts of its brain, helping it to use WKH HDUWK¡V PDJQHWLF Ă&#x20AC;HOG WR ORFDWH QHVWLQJ sites. It has been known to swim more than 1,400 nautical miles to return to the exact beach where it was born.

Today the green turtle is in serious trouble throughout its range, largely because of human predation. Other than humans, only the 20-foot-plus tiger shark is known to feed on the adult green turtle.

One reason humans prefer the taste of the green turtle is its diet. Unlike the loggerhead, hawksbill, and leatherback, the green turtle is an herbivore feeding on sea grasses, algae, kelp, and seaweed. Its meat is considered a delicacy and today is a product of aquaculture in the Cayman Islands. Green turtle soup can still be found on menus in the Florida Keys and elsewhere in the world.
